Abstract (sommario):

This dissertation is an exploration of the field in psychoanalytic research methodology aimed toward increasing understanding of unconscious processes that develop between researchers and their research topic. In this study, recent psychoanalytic research is discussed with an exploration of the research methods utilized. The methods used are then discussed in the context of the “circle of research methods” (Romanyshyn, 2012), a conceptualization of large groups of research traditions including natural science, human science, hermeneutic science, and science of the soul. The research approach of this study is centered in the traditions of hermeneutics and alchemical hermeneutics, which are grounded in the works of Schleiermacher, Dilthey, Heidegger, and Gadamer (Palmer, 1969). The researcher utilized the hermeneutic circle to explore research methods in psychoanalysis comparing the new information that arose from the process to the previous information that was already understood. Alchemical hermeneutics was also used to make a place for unconscious processes between this researcher and the research topic. The question of the place of the dynamic unconscious in research methods in psychoanalytic research opened up the larger question about the scientific status of psychoanalysis, and this topic is addressed throughout this study. For research conducted in the traditions of hermeneutic science and science of the soul in psychoanalysis, this study proposes that several theoretical concepts of analytic field theory be used and applied to develop a new research method in psychoanalysis that would make room for dynamic unconscious processes.

Krishnan, Hari Shanker. "A diagnostic model for testing the memorability of advertisements". Diss., The University of Arizona, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/185728.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this research is to develop and empirically test a conceptual framework for examining the effects of advertising exposure on consumer memory so as to better understand the information processing of advertisements. Patterns and levels of performance on various tests of memory for different advertisement components are interpreted within the framework of a memory model adapted from the well-known SAM model in psychology. Predictions are made regarding the effects on recall, recognition, and indirect test performance of an ad's execution strength and relevance to the main message elements, and elaboration (semantic versus nondirected). The general diagnostic procedures are illustrated in a study of humor in advertising. Subjects viewed print ads with variations in the humorous execution's strength and relevance to the brand claims either without explicit instructions to elaborate or with a task requiring semantic elaboration of the links between the humor and the brand claims. Subsequently they completed a (direct) recognition or recall task, or an indirect test of memory for various ad components. The results, though not entirely systematic, show that memory for the brand name and brand claim components vary as a function of stimulus characteristics and the processing operations at encoding. Second, the findings show that the ad components may facilitate or interfere with each other. High levels of attention to one ad component may lead to lower memory performance on other components. Third, this research shows how a theory-based set of comparisons of memory test performance may be used to identify the locus of effects, viz., at encoding or at retrieval. Memory failures due to lack of encoding attention to the ad are distinguished from the inability to retrieve the encoded information later. Finally, the study demonstrates the use of indirect tasks in testing advertising effects that implicate implicit retrieval processes from memory. The patterns of parallel versus dissociated performance on traditional direct versus indirect tests offer insights into various types of advertising effects on memory. The academic and managerial implications of the findings are discussed.

Abstract (sommario):
Statistical research can be more difficult to plan than other kinds of projects, since the research must adapt as knowledge is gained. This dissertation establishes a formal language and methodology for designing experimental research strategies with limited resources. It is a mathematically rigorous extension of a sequential and adaptive form of statistical research called response surface methodology. It uses sponsor-given information, conditions, and resource constraints to decompose an overall project into individual stages. At each stage, a "parent" decision-maker determines what design of experimentation to do for its stage of research, and adapts to the feedback from that research's potential "children", each of whom deal with a different possible state of knowledge resulting from the experimentation of the "parent". The research of this dissertation extends the real-world rigor of the statistical field of design of experiments to develop an deterministic, adaptive algorithm that produces deterministically generated, reproducible, testable, defendable, adaptive, resource-constrained multi-stage experimental schedules without having to spend physical resource.

Abstract (sommario):

Mciteka, Lulama Patrick. "Novel applications of Morita-Baylis-Hillman methodology in organic synthesis". Thesis, Rhodes University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1007598.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The overall approach in the present investigation has been to explore applications of the Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) reaction in asymmetric synthesis and in the continuation of systems with medicinal potential. To this end, a series of varied camphor-derived acrylate esters was prepared to serve as chiral substrates in asymmetric Morita-Baylis- Hillman reactions. Reduction of N-substituted camphor-10-sulfonamides afforded the 3- exo-hydroxy derivatives as the major products. Acylation of the corresponding sodium alkoxides gave the desired 3-exo-acrylate esters, isolation of which was complicated by concomitant formation of hydrochlorinated and diastereomeric competition products. Bulky camphorsulfonamides containing alkyl, dialkyl, aromatic and adamantyl groups were selected as N-substituents with the view of achieving stereoselective outcome in subsequent MBH reactions. The synthesis of novel camphor-derived Morita-Baylis-Hillman adducts using various pyridine-carboxaldehydes proceeded with exceptionally high yields with diastereoselectivities ranging from 7-33 % d.e. Both 1D and 2D NMR and HRMS techniques were employed to confirm the structures and an extensive study of the electropositive fragmentation patterns of a number of camphor-derived chiral acrylate esters was conducted. Attention has also been given to the application of MBH methodology in the construction of heterocyclic ‘cinnamate-like’ AZT conjugates which were designed to serve as dualaction HIV-1 integrase-reverse transcriptase (IN-RT) inhibitors. A number of pyridine carboxaldehyde-derived MBH adducts were synthesized using methyl, ethyl and t-butyl acrylates in the presence of 3-hydroxyquinuclidine (3-HQ) as catalyst. The yields for these reactions were excellent. The resulting MBH adducts were acetylated and subjected to aza-Michael addition using propargylamine. The resulting alkylamino compounds were then used in ‘Click reactions’ to form the targeted AZT-conjugates in moderate to excellent yield. In silico docking of computer modelled AZT-conjugates into the HIV-1 integrase and reverse transcriptase enzyme-active sites and potential hydrogen-bonding interaction with active-site amino acid residues were identified. The electrospray MS fragmentations of the AZT and the novel AZT-conjugates were also investigated and common fragmentation pathways were identified.

Shidmehr, Nilofar. "Poetic inquiry : a responsive methodology in research and education". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/46160.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
My PhD dissertation explores a qualitative methodology of inquiry in the humanities, social ‎sciences, and education called poetic inquiry. The exploration takes place in three movements. ‎The first movement inquires into poetry, as a distinct form of expression from prose, that is ‎concentrated, performative, and affective, resulting from a unique creative process in which the ‎poet responds to her past experiences attentively. This process is promoted by the poet becoming ‎a self-for-an-other whom she presents in her poetry. Here, responsiveness is the lyrical dimension ‎of living that the poet brings to her writing to inspire it. The second movement is a collection of ‎my poetry written in Canada, responsive to the question of my identity as an Iranian-born woman ‎living in diaspora. The poetry is followed by an example of poetic inquiry that emerges out of an ‎intuition of the pathos of belonging/non-belonging and unhomeliness of the world experienced ‎by immigrants. Finally, the third movement includes both an examination of poetic inquiry as a ‎minor form of research distinct from prose-based methodologies and its application to the ‎discourse of the politics of recognition which informs major researches on immigrants’ identities ‎and their recognition in multicultural societies such as Canada. In poetic inquiry, the researcher ‎not only employs a conventional research methodology but, as a poet, also responds ethically to ‎her research in the same way a chorus in Greek drama responds to the dramatic narrative enacted ‎on the stage. This responsiveness is an invocation that makes discursive inquiry act in ways ‎different from its orderly operations so as to transform itself into poetic inquiry. Poetic inquiry ‎includes both customary research and responsiveness as the lyrical dimension of inquiry. I ‎advocate for re-inclusion of the lyrical in the realm of knowledge as research and education. By ‎adding lyrical sensibilities into education, we can restore coherence, enactive complexity, and ‎intensity to educational practices and renders them into educational poetics as termed by Gitlin ‎and Peck. To theorize poetic inquiry, I borrow concepts from philosophers, poetry scholars, ‎literary theorists, and poets such as Deleuze and Guattari, Levinas, Zwicky, Bakhtin, Bachelard, ‎Auden, and Leggo. ‎

Abstract (sommario):
The quality of performed functions is crucially important in the process of use of interactive Internet maps. Functionality determines and describes the capabilities provided to the user: e.g., viewing, analysis or integral management of map elements. The dissertation presents original methodology that allows for integral quantitative evaluation the quality of implementation of functions of Internet maps of various types and complexity. The users‘ needs are taken into account. The methodology is based on the results of three investigations: user experiences, expert opinions and actual functions of existing interactive maps. All these aspects are combined into one complex, cumulative and flexible system of criteria and indices for qualimetric assessment of quality of implemented map functions. Original Internet based CartoUI software (www.cartoui.com) has been developed for practical implementation and verification of this methodology. The software also provides tools for analysis of information collected during particular research or for selected time span. CartoUI is available for everyone to use it for investigation into functionality of interactive Internet maps and for analysis of users‘ needs. The dissertation also provides detailed practical recommendations for development of diverse interactive internet maps tailored for different user groups. The recommendations are based on research on particular users‘ needs clarified by means of CartoUI.

This thesis introduces systematic ways to use mixed-integer programming (MIP) to solve difficult nonconvex optimization problems arising in application areas as varied as operations, robotics, power systems, and machine learning. Our goal is to produce MIP formulations that perform extremely well in practice, requiring us to balance qualities often in opposition: formulation size, strength, and branching behavior. We start by studying a combinatorial framework for building MIP formulations, and present a complete graphical characterization of its expressive power. Our approach allows us to produce strong and small formulations for a variety of structures, including piecewise linear functions, relaxations for multilinear functions, and obstacle avoidance constraints. Second, we present a geometric way to construct MIP formulations, and use it to investigate the potential advantages of general integer (as opposed to binary) MIP formulations. We are able to apply our geometric construction method to piecewise linear functions and annulus constraints, producing small, strong general integer MIP formulations that induce favorable behavior in a branch-and-bound algorithm. Third, we perform an in-depth computational study of MIP formulations for nonconvex piecewise linear functions, showing that the new formulations devised in this thesis outperform existing approaches, often substantially (e.g. solving to optimality in orders of magnitude less time). We also highlight how high-level, easy-to-use computational tools, built on top of the JuMP modeling language, can help make these advanced formulations accessible to practitioners and researchers. Furthermore, we study high-dimensional piecewise linear functions arising in the context of deep learning, and develop a new strong formulation and valid inequalities for this structure. We close the thesis by answering a speculative question: Given a disjunctive constraint, what can we reasonably sacrifice in order to construct MIP formulations with very few integer variables? We show that, if we allow our formulations to introduce spurious "integer holes" in their interior, we can produce strong formulations for any disjunctive constraint with only two integer variables and a linear number of inequalities (and reduce this further to a constant number for specific structures). We provide a framework to encompass these MIP-with-holes formulations, and show how to modify standard MIP algorithmic tools such as branch-and-bound and cutting planes to handle the holes.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) Traffic and Safety Division continues to advance the safety of the state roadway network through network screening and decision making tools. In an effort to aid UDOT in meeting this goal, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Brigham Young University (BYU) has worked with the Statistics Department in developing analysis tools for highway safety, specifically the Utah Crash Prediction Model (UCPM) and the Utah Crash Severity Model (UCSM). Additional tools and methodologies, such as the "Hot Spot Identification and Analysis," have been created to summarize the roadway characteristics, crash data, and possible countermeasures of roadway segments with safety problems. This research focuses on the creation of a three part "Roadway Safety Analysis" methodology, which applies and automates the cumulative work of recently completed highway safety research conducted for UDOT. The first part is to prepare the roadway data and crash data for the statistical analysis. The second part is to perform the network screening statistical analysis; rank the segments by state, UDOT Region, and county; and select segments of interest. The third part is to compile and publish the Roadway Safety Analysis reports for the selected segments of interest. These parts are accomplished using the automation tools and graphical user interfaces (GUIs), which are documented in three respective volumes of user manuals. The automation tools and GUIs were developed with checks and processes to allow the Roadway Safety Analysis methodology to be completed with new, updated roadway and crash datasets. The Roadway Safety Analysis methodology allows future iterations of the UCPM and UCSM analysis and compilation of the Roadway Safety Analysis reports to be conducted in a user friendly environment. A series of critical data columns were identified to communicate the need for data consistency for future iterations of this safety research. An example of the entire process of the Roadway Safety Analysis methodology is given to illustrate how the three parts tie together. The overall process has automated data processing tasks, which saves time and resources for the analyst to investigate possible safety measures for segments of interest. Recommendations for future highway safety research are given, including continued development of the Roadway Safety Analysis methodology, an analysis of intersections and horizontal curves, the implementation of the Roadway Safety Analysis methodology to other states, and the advancement of safety countermeasures and geospatial tools for highway safety research.

Alateah, Souad Mohammed. "Transforming clinical mycobacteriology with modern molecular methodology". Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/15920.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Whole genome sequencing (WGS) is an attractive approach for mycobacteria diagnosis and epidemiological studies. It provides the potential for a rapid method that produces detailed information and could theoretically be used as a routine tool in clinical settings. This thesis focuses on the benefits and challenges involved in transforming molecular approaches into practical clinical mycobacteriology in general, and in particular WGS, as well as examining how it might be implemented. We first set out to improve the quantification of viable mycobacteria cells in vitro and make the molecular bacterial load assay (MBLA) sensitive enough to use in future clinical trials that monitor treatment response. The results showed the assay is rapid and accurate in its detection and count of viable bacteria. WGS was tested with different types of mycobacteria species to address different epidemiological questions. WGS not only provides a higher resolution result than traditional epidemiological methods but it can rapidly identify an outbreak, thus simplifying the investigation and reducing the cost. WGS accurately identified the sources of TB recurrence and could therefore have a potential role in determining the endpoints for clinical trials. Rapid genotyping of species in this way has been demonstrated in our studies. In addition, WGS has the ability to, in most circumstances, predict TB drug resistance. This could also prove very beneficial from a clinical standpoint. We used different approaches in our studies; for example, single nucleotide polymorphism threshold methods and the creation of a putative outbreak reference genome, which can be used in future outbreak investigations. WGS is a cost-effective, high-resolution method with a short turnaround. This makes it potentially usable as a routine tool in clinical settings and reference laboratories. Future studies are needed to improve the mycobacterial genome sequencing procedure, analysis and bioinformatics in order to implement WGS in clinical practice.

Kholodilin, Konstantin A. "Dynamic Factor Analysis as a Methodology of Business Cycle Research". Doctoral thesis, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/4043.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The main objective of our research undertaken in this thesis is to elaborate a technique of constructing a composite economic indicator or a set of such indicators which would correspond to the theoretical concept of business cycle and reflect a phenomenon which may be interpreted as the cyclical dynamics of the economy.
As a point of departure we have chosen the definition of business cycle proposed by Burns and Mitchell (1946). We believe that the most appropriate method to capture the Burns and Mitchell's cycle would be the dynamic factor analysis.
The dynamic factor analysis in its current state requires undoubtedly some refinements and extensions to obtain unbiased and consistent estimates of the composite economic indicators and to use the available information in the best possible way.
Our research is mostly oriented towards the practitioners who have opted for using the dynamic factor approach in the construction of the business cycle indicator both at the regional and national levels.
The thesis is comprised of five chapters where the first and the last chapters are the introduction and conclusion delineating the objectives of the study and summarizing the results achieved during research.
Chapter two describes various approaches to the analysis of economic fluctuations proposed during the last 20 years. On the one hand, it concentrates on models with nonlinear, namely Markov-switching, dynamics, on the other hand, it is concerned with dynamic factor models. Finally, it shows the combined techniques which unify these two principal approaches, thus, modeling common latent factor with regime-switching dynamics.
In chapter three we introduce a general multifactor dynamic model with linear and regime-switching dynamics. This model allows capturing the intertemporal (leading versus coincident) dimension of the latent common factors. Two alternative multifactor dynamic models with a leading and a coincident unobserved common factors are examined: a model where the common coincident factor is Granger-caused by the common leading factor and a model where the leading relationship is translated into a set of specific restrictions imposed on the transition probabilities matrix.
Chapter four concentrates on the supplementary devices which allow to overcome some data problems which are very frequent in the practitioner's life. Among the most prominent are the structural breaks and missing observations. It is shown that some of these troubles can be coped with by modifying the dynamic common factors models, which leads to more efficient estimates of the parameters of the models.

Abstract (sommario):
The findings of a research project, conducted at Sheffield City Polytechnic between 1987 and 1992, are presented. The research was aimed at describing the work and methodology of operational research practitioners in the UK, and at promoting effectiveness in OR practice. In-depth interviews were conducted with a small sample of OR practitioners, most of whom are employed as internal consultants. Interview findings were juxtaposed with the results of extensive literature study. Comparisons are made between contemporary OR practice and portrayals of OR in literature, and also with other types of consultancy within the management sciences. The development of a simple but powerful framework, for underpinning description of OR practice, is described. In this thesis, operational research is portrayed as grounded in relationships with clients who are continually engaging in executive decision making. Problems are experienced as clients attempt to formulate theories about their environment, and proposals for action. OR practitioners aim to contribute insight to problem-handling processes. This is done principally by the provision of information, plus implications for action. OR practitoners also contribute information technology, and aim to enhance clients' intellectual processes by passing on problem-handling skills. Various types of technology are used as instruments in this process. OR practitioners utilise a 'structured approach' to situations. Extensive use is made of descriptive models; technology is also used for computation and to aid communication with clients. In the long term, OR work involves analysis of clients' problems, data management, development and maintenance of appropriate technology, and promotion of continuing consulting relationships. The development of professional effectiveness in operational research is considered. A module within a postgraduate OR course was developed in order to engage OR consultants and students in critical reflection upon their practice and methodology.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis investigates whether a qualitative research method, using phenomenological interviews and analysis, can be successfully applied to perceptual audio research, a field heretofore that has mainly used quantitative methods. The method is investigated by studying the types of information elicited by the method and the information’s usefulness and relevance to the conducted study. The qualitative method is applied in three different conditions: a non-experimental condition, an experimental condition, and an experimental condition using mixed-methods. The thesis also identifies implications associated with using a qualitative method in a quantitative field of research, implications that researchers should acknowledge and consider. All scientific criteria in which the quantitative research is judged cannot directly be applied to a qualitative method. A qualitative method has to be judged on its own framework, departure points, and scientific criteria. The information elicited from the qualitative method contains information that supports known knowledge and adds new knowledge. It supplements the accessibility to the subjects’ perceptions and used methods when conducting a perceptual evaluation task. In conclusion, a qualitative research method that consists of phenomenological interviews and analyses can be successfully applied in all the tested conditions.

Abstract (sommario):
Extensive research suggests organizations have unique guiding principles, called core values, which play a central role in strategic decision making, sustaining high-performance cultures, and guiding organizational culture change. Although the Competing Values Framework (CVF) has been widely used to identify a standardized set of core values, it has not been used to identify unique core values at a given organizations. Unique core values help to distinguish organizations and drive market success. The present research focused on development of a technique to extend the application of the CVF to identify the core values unique to a given organization. The CVF-based Core Values Identification Technique (CCVI) was developed and empirically tested at three companies. Data collection methods included semi-structured interviews, review of documents, participant observation and the standard CVF-based Organizational Culture Assessment Instrument (OCAI). The data analysis employed grounded theory methods in conjunction with the standard OCAI analysis. The primary research result is the iteratively developed and empirically tested tool, the CCVI Technique. Secondary research results include the identification of unique core values at each of the three participating companies. Lessons learned and the rationale for making modifications to the technique based on the case studies, along with best practices for utilization and opportunities for informing organizational change efforts are discussed.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis proposed to improve an existing performance measurement methodology called the "General Measurement Methodology (GMM)." The GMM as well as its variations have been used in organizations to design a measurement effort to support performance improvement. It has evolved over a number of years and is currently being researched at the International Productivity Center (IPC). In order to attain its objective, this research adopted a case study approach supported by data from the literature as well as an expert panel. Three cases were considered to collect data on performance measurement system design and implementation. Two of these organizations (IPC and Acme Manufacturing Company) have used the GMM to set up performance measurement systems. The third case study (Golden State Power and Light {GSP&L}) was selected to lend another perspective to measurement system design since it used another approach or methodology. Site visits were made to each case study and data was collected primarily using the unstructured interview. The literature contributed more perspectives on how organizations measure performance. Responses from an expert panel of fourteen people enhanced the data base even further. Data from each of the above sources have been collected and processed. As explained in Chapter 6, the research design adopted had to be altered toward the end since the development and validation of the improved GMM was difficult. The strength and advantages of the improved version could not be completely verified. However, the conclusions of this thesis include a comprehensive description of the knowledge, wisdom and insight gained about measurement. A roadmap (based on the information acquired) toward effective measurement system design, development and implementation has also been presented.

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (DPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2015.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study examined organisational identity from a substantive and methodological point of view. With the burgeoning interest in the organisational identity construct, there have been a multitude of perspectives and meanings associated with the term. These perspectives formed the basis of three juxtapositions used to evaluate the nature of knowledge generated by various research designs used to study organisational identity. These designs included survey design, content analysis, case study design, ethnography, narrative analysis and discourse analysis. I concluded that the choice for a particular research design does constrain or make possible the generation of different types of knowledge regarding OI. The effect of design type has long been suspected and argued for, and this study provides further substantiation for this view. The choice of research design is not a neutral one but plays an integral role in the nature of the knowledge generated, and should be taken seriously as part of the research process. Also from a methodological perspective, the aim was to explore whether an Internet-based, open-ended qualitative survey could provide a suitable description of organisational identity, and whether it would be possible to develop identity narratives from these responses. Data was gathered in a South African based multi-national engineering firm, the result of a recent merger of two engineering firms. Based on the responses to the survey, I was able to develop descriptive narratives of each of (what had been termed) the heritage organisations, each narrative comprising a series of inter-related identity statements capturing various facets of organisation identity. Three broad narratives for each heritage organisation dealt with the nature of the organisation and its position in the market, the importance of the profession and clients, and the value of people in the organisation. Given the pervasive nature of technology, and that work in many corporate and professional settings is conducted via the internet, an internet-based qualitative survey allows information regarding organisational identity to be gathered fairly easily. The research undertaken in this study thus adds to the body of knowledge surrounding the use of a web-based qualitative survey in accessing organisational identity, and suggests that this form of data gathering in the organisation can be successful, provided that participants are computer literate and have access to the Internet. The organisations in question were chosen as merger partners due to their similarity, and using the descriptive narratives developed from the survey, I was able to examine the question of distinctiveness in similar organisations, which has not yet been addressed. Despite the similarities, the identity of both organisations was arguably distinct, and this could be traced to two factors. The first was an element of social actor, in this case the size of the organisation, which coupled with other factors influenced organisation identity in very specific ways. Secondly, distinctiveness arose from the construction of meaning around specific elements of the social actor by members of the organisations. Thus, much like personal identity, organisational identity is associated with similarity and difference (Buckingham 2008).

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this thesis is to provide a methodological approach for conducting a Business Case Analysis (BCA) for the Advanced Technology Ordnance Surveillance (ATOS) Advanced Concept Technology Demonstration (ACTD). This study compares the cost savings over time of having an ATOS infrastructure in place at Navy Munitions Management locations compared to the base case of "as-is" inventory management. ATOS is a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)-based automated system that provides a capability to collect environmental data in near real-time and supports munitions management tasks on stored munitions pallets. This type of data has never before being available and is critical for making more precise decisions about the shelf life and operational performance of individual munitions throughout their service life. ATOS is not meant to be a replacement for the status quo processes of Ordnance Management (OM). Instead, ATOS is meant to enhance many of the current processes and add additional capabilities and dimensions to OM. A Business Case Analysis for a notional site, using exemplar data sets indicates that with an initial investment of 1.3 million dollars, a Net Present Value (NPV) of 5.3 million dollars can be obtained over a 10-year period. The payback period is less than one year, and the Return on Investment is 214 %, or almost 11 % annual, compounded ROI.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this three-essay dissertation was to expand knowledge and theory regarding soft systems methodologies (SSMs) and data visualization approaches in business, engineering, and other social sciences. The first essay depicts a bibliometric analysis study of the historic impacts of SSM from 1980-2018 on business, engineering, and other social sciences fields. This study found 285 articles that described or employed SSM for research and included outcomes such as top SSM authors, author citation impacts, common dissemination outlets, time-bound distribution of publications, and other relevant findings. This study provided a picture of who, what, why, when, and where SSM has had the greatest impact on academic thought and practice. The second essay presents research on the academic impact of Systemigrams, an associated data visualization approach, finding examples of conceptual or research development that employed Systemigrams to depict complex problem situations. Recommendations for improvement of designing these data visualizations to increase their field use resulted from this study. The final essay leverages a selection of the articles as use cases to produce a grounded theory study to identify phenomena that arose from the use of SSM for operations and firm strategy research. This study identified two broad themes including (i) scope, structure, and process challenges and (ii) performance and evaluation limitations. These themes were explained by six patterns that emerged from the publications. Each produced change recommendations for SSM process, practice, and reporting to support its continued viability and adoption in business and operations research.

On T. Popkewitrz’s Educational Research Methodology Abstract The dissertation aims to explore T. Popkewitz’s educational research methodology. His methodology, mainly based on M. Foucault’s theory, developing into a concept of social epistemology for analyzing educational topics and issues, on one hand is meant to question existent critical methodology and power patterns; on the other hand, it is rather to reevaluate institution and knowledge condition in schooling and hence to open up other possible critical methodologies and theoretical space. Six objects in this dissertation, they are to 1) explore the theoretical foundations of Popkewitz’s research methodology; 2) examine Popkewitz’s educational studies and works; 3) analyze essential concepts of his research methodology; 4) discuss his expatriation on knowledge and discourse; 5) explain his analysis on power; 6) emancipate his definition of intellectuals. To achieve the objectives, the dissertation apply genetic problem method for relatively analysis and hence comes up six conclusions: 1) Popkewitz’s educational research methodology previously based on sociology of knowledge turns into the foundation of Foucault’s thoughts; 2) Popkewitz’s previous studies aims to explore ideological dimensions of education, but later aims to analyze the relations of knowledge and power in educational issues; 3) Popkewitz’s research methodology is deeply influenced by Foucault’s theories in terms of object of research, strategy and the definition of researcher; 4) Popkewitz employs Foucault’s concepts of discourse, but emphasize more on the dimensions of power, which means to comprehend various rational regulations and open distinctive space; 5) Popekewitz refuses the concept of power dominion and repression so as to employ the concept of power deployment and generation. However, in his analyses, he ignores descriptions of specificity of subject. The point is to display various concepts of subject and rejection, and express alternative critical voices; 6) Popekewitz, effected by Foucault’s idea about intellectuals, considers that educators play the role of intellectuals, who are not only to reflect on the heritage of the presumptions of consciousness philosophy but also to question knowledge and truth, which are represented by their roles. Based on the conclusions mentioned above, the dissertation intends to draw some inspiration for educational methodology and educational research field. In the part of educational methodology, the dissertation points out educational research is supposed to extricate the referential territories of existent knowledge, to question the danger of formalization and institutionalization, to penetrate power relations in education so as to criticize the technology of self and perceive excluded other. Therefore, educational research is supposed to proceed reflection on professional field and knowledge authority where one situates so as to voice in different positions instead of enquiring universality or universal values. In addition, the dissertation points out Popekewitz’s educational methodology in educational research field carries the inspirations for alternative opinions on research theories, the deconstructive power of methodology, concerns for others as research subject, and strategic positions of researchers.

Abstract (sommario):
This research project explores factors affecting sustainability initiatives within educational institutions. Using grounded theory and mixed-methods, the project evaluates the experiences and perspective of nineteen individuals involved with sustainability initiatives in schools. Twelve research participants are from one school community while the other seven are sustainability programme coordinators at a range of educational institutions. Results indicate that significant life experiences and situational factors both have an impact on an individual’s perspective on sustainability. The success of sustainability initiatives relies heavily on keen advocates for sustainability within the community and the support ascribed to sustainability by the institution. Providing engaging, hands-on experiences, supporting individuals and groups, and encouraging role modeling can foster an ethic of sustainability across the community. The outcome of this research project is a framework designed to help individuals and institutions in their efforts to support and implement sustainability initiatives. With the advent of the big bang disruption, the pattern of enterprise development must also change, bringing about a reduction in the life cycle of the enterprise. This means that innovators have unprecedented opportunities and challenges. They only need to tap the real needs of consumers and the right market and timing, companies have the opportunity to fly high and beyond the sky. However, when the new system completeness of the enterprise is insufficient, it is likely to give competitors a chance to break through and lead to a crisis of entrepreneurship. Innovators need to have Lean & Agile thinking to assist in the design and implementation of system completeness, in the case of limited resources and time, we can take into account the high-speed innovation in environmental changes and guide the development of new enterprise. In order to construct a systematic lean innovation entrepreneurship methodology that can be referenced by new innovators, this research adopts qualitative research methodology by to execute focus group interview method with semi-structured outlines and invites experts and practitioners in related fields to discuss the enterprise of the innovators. Further, a preliminary theoretical model is built up by using the grounded theory to encode and analyze the interview data. After that, through the integration and verification of various entrepreneurship theories and methods such as Agile Startup, Lean Startup, and Babson College entrepreneurship education model, this research gradually constructs a systematic lean innovation entrepreneurship development lead that innovators can use to guide thinking and move towards a successful way. The lean innovation entrepreneurship methodology of this research emphasizes the application of Lean Startup connotation to find Potential consumer demand and create maximum value with the least resources. The Agile Startup connotation is constructed a feedback system through the establishment of the agile team. By integrating the connotation of the two, the innovators have a continuous optimization and repetitive evolution of entrepreneurship methods, thereby reducing the cost and risk of entrepreneurship, and accelerated the reach of entrepreneurship target. Expect the results of this research will help the innovators systematically develop lean innovation and entrepreneurship.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
University of Technology, Sydney. Faculty of Science.
Title: Application of neurophysiological methodology in acupuncture research. Background: Increased popularity and acceptance of acupuncture also increases demand for scientific evidence of its effectiveness. In order to produce such evidence acupuncture research borrows methods from other scientific disciplines. Thus it is essential to validate the usefulness of such methods when they are employed specifically in physiological research of the acupuncture phenomenon. Confirmation of physiological changes due to acupuncture stimulation could increase engagement in acupuncture research and make direct comparisons with biomedical research possible. Objectives: The main objective was to evaluate the usefulness of non-invasive neurophysiological methods in detecting physiological changes in response to manual acupuncture. It was not the purpose of this study to find a proof that acupuncture works or how it works, but to confirm that acupuncture can be successfully researched using objective, non-invasive neurophysiological methods. Method: A rigorously designed, randomised controlled trial (RCT) was used to evaluate the effectiveness of some of the neurophysiological research methods. Three-point criteria was set up. Firstly, to investigate if manual stimulation of the acupuncture points can induce physiological changes in healthy subjects that are strong enough to be detected by non-invasive testing methods. Secondly, to investigate if physiological changes induced by acupuncture stimulation form a pattern, which is unique for every individual acupuncture point being tested. And thirdly, to investigate if physiological changes induced by acupuncture are more pronounced in subjects initially showing stronger signs of subjective / objective stress. Overall, sixty healthy female subjects were recruited for the study, and one hundred and twenty experimental sessions were completed in order to collect the data. Objective measurements by means of multichannel computerised recording were used to capture concurrently occurring physiological events. Results: Acupuncture treatment used in group one (T1) using acupuncture point LU7 and in group three (T3) using acupuncture points LU7 and KD6 promoted deeper relaxation and light sleep in subjects showing higher levels of anxiety. In contrast, subjects in group two (T2) where only acupuncture point KD6 was stimulated, did not relax or easily fall into light sleep during the 40 minutes post-treatment. Usually Theta and Alpha “relaxation” waves were changed. Of the two treatment protocols T1 and T3, the T1 showed the strongest differences. This can be interpreted as indicating that acupuncture point LU7 promotes relaxation and light sleep. Stimulation of acupoint KD6 counteracted the relaxation effect promoted by acupoint LU7. Data from the experiments clearly showed that stimulation of two acupuncture points LU7 and KD6 did not influence heart beat in a strong way. The treatment effect was only detected in group T2 (acupoint KD6) where an increase in the sympathetic regulation may indicate that KD6 has a balancing and energising effect on heart rhythm. The respiration rate and respiration amplitude seems to be unchanged by acupuncture stimulation. There were no statistically significant differences in body temperature before and after the experiment. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure remained very stable and was not influenced by acupuncture stimulation of the two acupoints LU7 and KD6. Analysis of the electrodermal activity (EDA) data confirmed that changes in skin potential are very sensitive and specific to needle insertion and needle removal, but not specific to the site of the insertion. Physiological habituation seems to play significant role in diminishing the EDA response to manipulation of the acupuncture needle. Conclusion: Insertion of a single needle invokes physiological changes that can be detected by neurophysiological methods. Certain acupoint-specific patterns of change can be seen in multichannel recordings. Results suggest that neurophysiological methods are appropriate for, and can be adopted in acupuncture studies. Furthermore, recommendations regarding research designs were formulated. They include a strong need for a separate control group in acupuncture studies and highlight the importance of continuous monitoring of multiple physiological parameters during experiments of that type. New methods of data analysis based on neural networks gave very promising results that may rival traditional statistical linear models. Overall the outcome of this project may serve as a call for standardisation of neurophysiological research protocols in acupuncture laboratories.

Abstract (sommario):
Regional land use planning in the Yukon has a long and unfortunate history of failed efforts. Under Chapter 11 of the Yukon First Nations Umbrella Final Agreement, a new process for planning has been in place since 1993. Through qualitative, interview-based research, I explore possible factors that either hinder or facilitate successful planning. I used the North Yukon regional land use planning effort as a case study example of the first plan to be successfully approved in Yukon history. A number of challenges resulting from poorly defined roles and responsibilities caused notable struggles and conflict throughout the process, but fortunately, strong political support and micro and meso – level organization, combined with a solid team of skilled and dedicated people, allowed the process to ultimately succeed. Lessons learned and recommendations for future regional planning initiatives are discussed.

Abstract (sommario):
There is abundant evidence verifying that patients benefit when nurses communicate better; therefore improving team dynamics will positively impact patient care and improve nurse engagement resulting in many positive outcomes for teams. This applied action research study assessed the research question: “What is the experience of team work and team dynamics among members of a multidisciplinary nursing team from a Licensed Practical Nurse perspective?” The experiences of licensed practical nurses (LPNs) and key external leaders (KELs) are explored and analyzed drawing from current literature in the field of teams in health, organizational culture in health, and transformative learning in health. Historical and leading communication, organizational culture, and leadership theories guide this study. During focus groups and interviews, the researcher and participants were influenced to generate new knowledge and insight on team dynamics, through appreciative inquiry. Manifest and latent content analysis identified key themes within each of the subtopic themes, generating a number of recommendations for future action. Through the identification of similar and unique perspectives between the literature and participants in this study, the action research goals of empowerment and emancipation of team members was dynamically met for research participants. Keywords: nursing; team dynamics; communication; collaboration; culture; leadership
