Abstract (sommario):
There are a lot of scientific and research reports dedicated to Armenian architecture from the ancient times to nowadays. There are many interesting and thoroughly researched reports of architectural and historical value done by not only Armenian but also foreign historians, architects, and engineers. Exploring Armenian architecture’s chronology and research reports, we noticed that after independence of the Republic of Armenia (since 1991) there are few scientific reports which include the stages of development of architecture of newly independent Armenia, the current state of the architectural heritage and their observance. So we decided to study that period trying to show the problems and essential events as well as to introduce that period by the stages of development also including some examples of architectural heritage.

Abstract (sommario):
During the late Qing Dynasty, Western colonists plundered and divided the land as concession where they consequently built European and American architectures. These architectures, such as concession garden architectures, are a result of relevant cultural exchange. Thus, concession garden architectural culture should be studied. In this study, the historical records of the concession and the concession garden in the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China were examined on the basis of the representative architectures of Shanghai and Tianjin in China. The origin, classification, characteristic, and development of the concession garden architecture were regarded as the starting point, and the characteristics of the garden architecture in different regions were discovered. Further insights into the development of conservation concession garden buildings in China and the use of modern landscape architectures were provided, and new perspectives for studies on concession landscape architectures were presented through an in-depth understanding and analysis of concession landscape architectures.

Abstract (sommario):
Architecture plays a vital role in the development and transformation of societies, serving as a crucial component that requires highly skilled professionals. Architectural education holds immense significance as it plays a pivotal role in equipping students with the essential knowledge, skills, and competencies needed to meet the demands of the architectural profession. The particularity of teaching architecture lies in applying a unique learning model called design studio, which is entirely different from traditional forms of university education in its methodology. The research presented in this paper is a preliminary and exploratory study of teaching architectural design skills at academic institutions in the Republic of Serbia. To make an overview of the current situation in the field, the research uses the methods of document analysis and desk-based curriculum review with the aim of comparative assessment of the established structure of study programs. The research results presented in this paper represent the first step towards a comprehensive investigation of learning and teaching architecture in Serbia. Researchers still do not consider this topic adequately and systematically, although our country has a tradition of educating architects for almost two centuries.

Abstract (sommario):
Ali Saim Ülgen (1913–63), a preservation architect, architectural historian, author, bureaucrat and educator, was a leading figure in the nascent field of heritage conservation during the early decades of the Republic of Turkey. This was a time when the Republican leaders sought to establish the national character of art and architecture by interpreting the “Turkishness” and uniqueness of the Ottoman heritage through the tenets of the Modern Movement. The reconciliation of the modernist rationale with nationalist historiography created contested paradigms in a nation searching for its cultural roots. Ülgen considerably contributed to the nationalist appropriation of the Ottoman heritage, but his taxonomical gaze stands out for its focus on contextual analysis. This essay addresses the dichotomy of documenting the Ottoman architectural patrimony through the lens of modernism, which is visible in Ülgen’s work, a remarkably understudied Republican intellectual.

Abstract (sommario):
An undiscovered chapter in the history of architecture comes from the ex-Soviet Republic of Georgia. Poetics of Architecture is the name given to the studioworkshop at the Georgian Technical University set up by the Georgian architect Shota Bostanashvili (1948–2013). From 1990 until his death he delivered insightful, playful and rather provocative lectures on architecture at this university. He preferred to call his architectural philosophy, critical discourse on architecture. Themes ranged from poetics to metapoetics of architecture. His philosophy of architecture is illustrated by some of his designs and executed projects which demonstrate a drift from existentialism to the philosophy of play. This study includes reference to his last building, a project whose demolition Bostanashvili witnessed before passing away. Based on the concept of the return of the sacred, this edifice was a sort of counter movement to technogenic architecture.

Abstract (sommario):
Art Nouveau architecture attracts the interest of contemporary researchers with its formative natural elements, plastic ornament, decorative lines, and unique options complementing and organically fitting into the modern urban environment. The few buildings in medium and small towns with Art Nouveau features and links to the local architectural traditions, with their unique decorative elements, deserve special attention. This interest is primarily due to the aesthetic perception of architectural space, the study and preservation of modern monuments. Today, many buildings have lost their Art Nouveau decorative elements, and their original appearance has been changed as a result of alterations. The reason for such transformations were historical events that significantly influenced the architectural image of the towns. The analysis of Art Nouveau architecture in the towns of the Chuvash Republic, such as Cheboksary, Alatyr, and Yadrin, reveals the distinctive features of compositional solutions and decorative finishing of buildings, as well as changes in their image. The study relies on the architecture of the mansions of the merchants Yefremov in Cheboksary, the houses of the timber dealer Burashnikov and the merchant Talantsev in Yadrin, and the consumer culture buildings in Alatyr. Based on the study of Art Nouveau architecture, the authors try to show the irreversible changes made to the original appearance of the buildings by some reconstructions, and identify the problem of preserving the architectural heritage of the Art Nouveau style in the cities of the Chuvash Republic.

A two meter rise in sea levels projected by the end of this century threatens the sovereignty of the Maldivian nation state. While flight from the Maldives to establish a new homeland elsewhere has been proposed, the culture and economy of this country is inextricably entrenched in its geophysical environment. Although the Maldives is known for super luxury resorts, the nation's government is poorly positioned to defend a population of 400,000 people spread across 1200 islands. This thesis proposes a strategy by which the international resort operator, an autonomous and independently funded entity, can be mobilized as an agent of coastal defense. Also investigated are issues of artificial reef ecology, defensive coastal infrastructures, and prefabricated composite construction and modularity.

Following the work of German-American curator Alexander Dorner (1893-1957) from his early curatorial career in Niedersachsen to professorships in New England, this dissertation explores the intersections of Euro-American modernism and developing ideations of experience within aesthetic philosophy. Dorner's work was formulated in deep engagement with (and often intentional contradiction to) the art theory being incubated in contemporaneous art institutions, pedagogies, and practices. His written texts and museum praxis responded to emerging notions of subjectivity, restoration, and perception in the aesthetic theory of Alois Riegl and Erwin Panofsky, art restoration mandates advocated by German museum leaders such as Max Sauerlandt and Kurt Karl Eberlein, and the artistic productions of El Lissitzky and Herbert Bayer. Against shifting expressions of democracy in Weimar Germany and the mid-century United States, Dorner's polemical focus on museum experience was, in effect, an attempt to train citizens for collective but heterogeneous social life.

Armstrong, Naja Regina. "Round temples in Roman architecture of the Republic through the late Imperial period". Thesis, University of Oxford, 2001. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:6bf53ac0-87a0-443c-8daa-f7b710196c4b.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Roman round temples are usually discussed either in the context of round buildings like baths and mausolea or on a case-by-case basis. Both approaches fail to reveal what makes round temples a distinct architectural type and moreover, what reasons can account for their use throughout the Roman world. By examining round temples from the Republic, when they are first attested, to the early fourth century AD, this thesis aims to explain why the round form had such a lasting appeal. It follows a chronological approach, discussing the evidence for individual temples and situating them within their historical, social, topographical, and architectural contexts. In a comparative analysis, the building components, materials, techniques, decorative details, and proportions employed by round temples are outlined to reveal influences on their design. The round temples discussed in this study are concentrated in Italy, Greece, and Asia Minor. While the earliest examples in Rome draw on Italic traditions, from the late Republic, round temples begin to reflect Greek trends. Greek tholoi and the Greek decorative repertory, balanced by Roman developments in design, have a lasting influence on round temples. Based on tholoi, scholars have assumed that Roman round temples honored Vesta and divinized heroes. While they were celebrated with a few examples, the majority were dedicated to other gods and goddesses. As a result, religious, social, topographical and aesthetic reasons are proposed to explain the enduring appeal of round temples. Like the motivations behind their foundations, the plans, dimensions, and proportional relationships employed by round temples are noted for their diversity. For their individuality and inventive spirit, round temples make a significant contribution to the Roman architectural repertory.

Zampieri, Eleonora. "Rebuilding the Republic : the propaganda in architecture of Caesar and Pompey in Rome". Thesis, University of Leicester, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/40037.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This PhD thesis investigates how political propaganda was carried out via architectural display by Julius Caesar and Pompey the Great in Rome during the mid-first century BC. Only recently have scholars begun to focus on the ideological meaning and importance of monuments in the context of the political struggles of the Late Republic; furthermore, while the figure of Caesar has recently seen re-assessment, the theatre of Pompey and its decorative programme and ideological meaning are still a matter of debate. Since architecture was one of the main media in a Roman politician’s efforts to gain prestige and support, my intention is to understand the political reasons and the propagandistic needs that led these two great figures to the promotion of particular buildings in a specific context. Furthermore, the diachronic development of the ideological content of those monuments is analysed, as well as the target of that content. The results of my research confirm that the political conflict between Caesar and Pompey was very visible in their monumental programmes, and demonstrate that these interventions progressively acquired new meanings in relation to political events and to the shifting balances of power. Finally, new interpretations are presented in connection to the plurality of meanings that a single propagandistic message could acquire according to the cultural education and social status of the groups and individuals for which it was intended.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThe chapter deals with the salient features of India’s federal fiscal architecture which is regarded, by many, as unitary in nature. Like other federations, India’s multi-level fiscal system is characterized by two kinds of imbalances, i.e. vertical (due to mismatch in expenditure responsibilities and taxation powers to union, state and local governments) and horizontal (due to high degree of disparities among sub-national governments in their fiscal capacities and fiscal needs). The chapter narrates the structure, process and interplay of institutions including successive union and state finance commissions and their treatments to correct various fiscal asymmetries. It also summarizes the recent reforms in intergovernmental fiscal relations including the system of fiscal transfers, equity and efficiency concerns, role of political institutions and public debts to understand India’s federal finance.

Abstract (sommario):
The accelerated growth of cities entails challenges in all sectors, and specifically, it has a close relationship with the construction sector. The Dominican Republic is a country where urban growth is increasing considerably, representing a problem of great magnitude in terms of the construction of social housing to reduce the housing deficit. In the social housing projects in Santo Domingo, the energy conditions are non-existent. There are no previous studies on the thermal comfort of those buildings. For this reason, this study seeks to analyze thermal comfort and energy efficiency in these types of housing through an energy simulation. The energy simulation is carried out through OpenStudio, which uses the Energy Plus calculation engine. A type of model was analyzed for the determination of temperatures and ranges of thermal comfort to evaluate its behavior for 24 hours in different months. The calculations obtained from the energy consumption due mainly to the variation of the comfort temperature indicate that the temperature variation is very similar in the selected months, with a maximum temperature of 27.3ºC in the hottest month and a minimum temperature of 26 .8ºC in the coldest month. Finally, due to the warm climate that prevails in the area, a high comfort temperature is recorded in these types of dwellings. To improve the comfort conditions in this type of dwelling, it is necessary to add thermal insulation and control the solar gains effectively.

Abstract (sommario):
The paper will investigate the fortifications erected by private entities in rural areas throughout the Stato da Mar territories of the Republic of Venice. While the state structures are definitely more studied, the private Venetian defenses of the territory are mostly ignored from a comparative discussion encompassing a larger area. The defenses constructed by the noble families differ in type and layout, depending on their location and destination: there are inland tower houses in Crete designed to control the territory against native uprisings, and there are seaside castles in Dalmatia that are also considering naval raids. We will analyze these private Venetian defenses in their variety and importance for their regions and the Republic.

Abstract (sommario):
The Black Sea is an interior sea and located between Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, Ukraine, Russia, Georgia and Turkey. The Black Sea flows through the Bosporus and reaches the Marmara Sea. Strong winds and stream has seen in the Black Sea in most of times in a year. Because of that natural bays were preferred while the ports and settlements were established. Republic of Genoa has started to plan the trade routes that will be carried out on the Black Sea coast since the Treaty of Nymphaeum signed in 1261. The settlements of the Genoese colonies along the Black Sea coast were not simultaneous. From 1266 onwards, there had been a growth of about 200 years. They intervened in some of the defense structures in these ports. They have placed their own coat of arms on the walls of the defensive structures they had built or repaired. The information is obtained about the colonies in these ports from the trade records which kept by Genoese (Massaria di Caffa, Massaria di Pera), the maritime maps (portolans) produced in those centuries and the medieval historians. The scope of this paper is to be examined that between Bulgaria and Georgia borders the Black Sea port of Turkey’s remaining strongholds which Genoese used for trade. Historical documents and maps will be used as well. In the light of these methods, the ports used by the Republic of Genoa on the shores of the Black Sea, established colonies and construction activities in the thirteenth - fifteenth centuries will be examined.

This report is part of the Inter-American Development Bank's (IDB) Demand Solutions: Ideas for Improving Lives, which aims to give visibility to the region's creatives and to position creativity as an integral element of economic and social development.
