Abstract (sommario):
The ability to attract and retain customers through providing excellent service quality is a necessity for any business in every field. However, before a firm can expect to consistently provide high quality service, it must first know how to measure and identify areas of needed improvement. While service quality research has been conducted in most of the major sectors of the economy, the residential real estate brokerage industry is only beginning to incorporate existing knowledge of service quality management. This is especially disconcerting given that real estate is such a large part of local and national economies around the world. The purpose of this thesis is to identify the best instrument that can be used to measure service quality in the residential real estate brokerage industry. The findings reveal that the reliability, responsiveness and empathy dimensions significantly lead to increases in the overall evaluation of service the firm provides. The empathy dimension also significantly causes homebuyers to recommend the firm to others. Additionally, empathy significantly causes the client to use the firm again. Finally, as hypothesized, overall satisfaction leads to both repeat uses of the firm and recommending the firm to a friend.

Abstract (sommario):
In the future, audiological rehabilitation of adults with hearing loss will be more available, personalized and thorough due to the possibilities offered by the internet. By using the internet as a platform it is also possible to perform the process of rehabilitation in a cost-effective way. With tailored online rehabilitation programs containing topics such as communication strategies, hearing tactics and how to handle hearing aids it might be possible to foster behavioral changes that will positively affect hearing aid users. Four studies were carried out in this thesis. The first study investigated internet usage among adults with hearing loss. In the second study the administration format, online vs. paper- and pencil, of four standardized questionnaires was evaluated. Finally two randomized controlled trials were performed evaluating the efficacy of online rehabilitation programs including professional guidance by an audiologist. The programs lasted over five weeks and were designed for experienced adult hearing-aid users. The effects of the online programs were compared with the effects of a control group. It can be concluded that the use of computers and the internet overall is at least at the same level for people with hearing loss as for the general age-matched population in Sweden. Furthermore, for three of the four included questionnaires, the participants’ scores remained the same across formats. It is however recommended that the administration format remain consistent across assessment points. Finally, results from the two concluding intervention studies provide preliminary evidence that the internet can be used to deliver education and rehabilitation to experienced hearing aid users who report residual hearing problems and that their problems are reduced by the intervention; however the content and design of the online rehabilitation program requires further investigation.

Beamish, Alison Leslie. "The use of repeat colour digital photography to monitor high Arctic tundra vegetation". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/45395.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
High Arctic ecosystems are experiencing some of the earliest and most extreme changes in climate as a result of global climate change. Temperature increases twice the hemispheric average are initiating changes to terrestrial systems including shifts in timing of phenology, aboveground biomass and community composition of Arctic vegetation. Satellite imagery from the last 30 years has shown a greening across tundra ecosystems with increases in peak productivity and growing season length. A few plot scale field studies support these large-scale trends but overall validation at the plot scale is still lacking. Current manual and automated methods for monitoring vegetation at the community and plot scale is both time consuming and employs expensive, sensitive multispectral instrumentation that can be cumbersome to use in Arctic field sites. In this thesis I examine the utility of colour digital photography in monitoring tundra vegetation across four different vegetation communities, inside and outside of passive warming chambers. Colour and infrared photos were taken on one day peak season in 2010. Relationships between a greenness index derived from colour photographs and biomass data were compared to relationships with NDVI derived from infrared photographs. Results suggest that colour photographs can be used as a proxy for productivity and aboveground biomass in multiple tundra vegetation communities. These data were then used to infer phenological signals at multiple spatial scales from a set of colour photographs taken on six days during the 2012 growing season. Results show higher greenness values due to treatment at the plot scale but not at the individual scale suggesting greater green biomass in warmed plots. At the individual scale site differences emerged for two study species (Salix arctica, Dryas integrifolia) suggesting a difference in vegetation vigor due to differences in soil moisture and perhaps competition. The phenological signal was strongest at the species scale due to reduced interference from bare soil, litter and standing water. Overall, these results show the potential for this methodology for measuring vegetation in the Arctic. Its simplicity, affordability and efficiency has great potential for use in a vegetation monitoring network in the Arctic.

XRunner, a UNIX, client-server based, automated record-replay test tool developed by Mercury Interactive Corporation, was used by a project at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center to automate intensive GUI/window-driven satellite operations functions. This work was part of the Integrated Monitoring, Analysis and Control COTS System (IMACCS), a COTS integration prototype development effort. XRunner, running in its object-oriented context sensitive mode, recorded the window/push-button images of significant events in spacecraft operations with sequential steps and generated test script language (TSL) for subsequent replay or test verification. The recorded TSL was optimized such that scenario replay timing, sequencing, grouping, and UNIX interactions became simple, easily-automated tasks instead of manually intensive, error-prone operations. This feature of the XRunner tool is expected to greatly enhance operations and testing.

Eastment, Conor. "How has woody vegetation changed in north-east Namibia in response to land use, climate and fire?" Master's thesis, Faculty of Science, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/32258.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Bush encroachment or the thickening of woody vegetation is a phenomenon occurring throughout savannas, which tends to be more pronounced in small protected areas. The consequences of bush encroachment are often negative for the conservation of biodiversity, for the promotion of tourism and the prevention of wildfires. Hence, effective monitoring of woody vegetation and the factors which influence its spread are essential. This is particularly the case for protected areas such as that of Bwabwata National Park (BNP) in north-east Namibia. With a complex land use history and different fire management approaches being adopted throughout the area, the effect of fire on woody vegetation in BNP is currently poorly understood. This study used a 20-year-old repeat photography monitoring project and satellite-based remote sensing products to explore woody cover dynamics in BNP. Results revealed that woody cover has increased by 13% since 1999 in BNP. Furthermore, the results show differences in the structure of woody vegetation. Repeated late dry season fires in the west of the park have driven an increasing dominance of 3m in eastern sections of the park. This influence of different fire regimes spatially across BNP, suggests that local fire management is a significant determinant of woody vegetation change. Woody vegetation change differs spatially across BNP due to frequent late dry season fires prevailing in the west and less frequent earlier season fires occurring in the east. Therefore, in order to reduce the mortality of woody species and conserve heterogenous height structure in the west, a reduction of frequent late dry season fires is required. Early dry season fires are shown to reduce the rate of increasing total woody cover change and, therefore, this fire management strategy arguably contributes towards the reduction of wildfire risk, conservation of biodiversity and promotion of tourism.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
An inverse relationship exists between self-reported religiousness and substance use. However, we question whether religious culture impacts the veracity of self-reported substance use. The primary aim of this study of low-income pregnant women in South Central Appalachia was to determine the accuracy of self-reported substance use in pregnant women as well as to determine whether there were differences in use rates and/or differences in the degree to which women would accurately report substance use depending on their religiousness. Self-reported use and toxicology screening results taken from a larger prospective, longitudinal, smoking cessation study were compared for five substances (cannabinoids [marijuana or other cannabinoids], benz/barb/sed [including benzodiazepines, barbiturates, or any sedative], opioids [including heroin, methadone or other medication-assisted treatment medications, or other opiates], crack/cocaine [crack or cocaine], and meth/amph [including methamphetamine or any other amphetamine]). Women who attend church frequently reported lower rates of substance use than infrequent or nonattenders, as did women who rated themselves as high in intrinsic religiosity (IR), although the difference between high and low groups is less extreme for IR as opposed to attendance. Women who attended church frequently were far less likely to report use or to have use confirmed than any of the other groups including those high in IR. Rates of positive toxicology screens did not differ statistically across religiousness groupings, but the pattern of proportionally fewer positive toxicology results was seen in frequent attenders but not in women self-reporting as high IR. Women’s tendency to underreport substance use was unrelated to religiousness variables, indicating underreporting is not necessarily driving this difference in reported substance use.

Anderson, Jennifer Leigh. "Lives, Livelihoods, and Landscapes: A Study of Land Use and Social Change in Northeastern Nepal". PDXScholar, 2006. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/2238.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis explores the forces of change in lives and landscapes that have altered the Lamosangu-to-Everest route in northeastern Nepal and shows how a transect in photographs and conversations across the east-central Himalaya allows us insight and a greater understanding into the processes and consequences of this change. Three forces of change over the last twenty-five years dominated discussions with local informants: the rise of the "People's War"-Nepal's Maoist Insurgency beginning in 1996; the Democratic Revolution of 1990; and dependence on tourism for livelihood after the establishment of Sagarmatha National Park in 1976. Understanding the cultural-historical context for these forces is necessary to understand the concerns of today's residents living along the Lamosangu-to-Mount Everest Base Camp transect. The visual and ethnographic evidence discussed in this thesis takes a larger role than strict analysis of conspicuous large-scale land use change and I hope the comparative 200 I images will be used as benchmarks for future research as well as for further exploration into the ways people and place have been represented.

Anderson, Jason Correnth. "The use of CEN38 in assessing evolutionary relationships in the genus Sorghum". Texas A&M University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/2623.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
A DNA sequence-based phylogenetic tree (Dillon et al., 2004) places the species of the genus Sorghum into two sister lineages, one with x = 5 and the other with x = 10 as a basic chromosome number. It has not been resolved whether or not these lineages are monophyletic or polyphyletic. A repetitive sequence, CEN38, found only in Sorghum and sugarcane, was used to assess evolutionary relationships among Sorghum species. The objectives of this research were to determine the taxonomic distribution of CEN38, its chromosomal position(s), and its organization in DNA. CEN38 was detected by filter hybridization to be present in the DNA of 16 of 21 Sorghum species analyzed, ranging from 15 to ~21,000 copies. It was detected by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) only in chromosomes of species of the section Eu-sorghum, where it had a pericentromeric distribution. The low copy number and/or chromosomal distribution of CEN38 in other Sorghum species apparently does not allow for its detection by FISH. Analysis of restriction enzyme digested DNA with homology to CEN38 and of fragments amplified by PCR using primers selected to amplify S. bicolor CEN38 sequences showed that S. laxiflorum and S. macrospermum have tandemly arranged CEN38 sequences as is found in S. bicolor. This supports the close evolutionary affinity of the species in the x = 10 lineage. In the x = 5 lineage, DNA of 11 of 16 species analyzed hybridized with CEN38 by filter hybridization. In S. versicolor, large DNA fragments (4.36 kb to 23 kb) generated by digestion with restriction enzymes hybridized to CEN38. Since a ladder of smaller fragments was not detected, CEN38 may have been inserted into a transposable element in this species and dispersed throughout the genome. Among species of the x = 5 lineage, PCR using primers for S. bicolor CEN38 amplified only DNA fragments from S. timorense and these formed a ladder based on a ~125 bp repeat. Since hybridization of the CEN38 sequence to DNA of S. timorense was not detected by filter hybridizations, these sequences apparently are not similar to CEN38. Cloning and sequencing of DNA from species of the x = 5 lineage that hybridizes to CEN38 are needed to determine whether or not they are in the CEN38 family. A monophyletic or polyphyletic origin of the x = 5 and x = 10 lineages was not resolved.

Kennedy, Donna R. "Late adolescents' self report of communication and contraceptive use". Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/43044.

Abstract (sommario):

The purpose of this study was to better understand factors related to communication and contraceptive use among college students. Further, the study was undertaken to obtain a better understanding of what is meant by the word "communication" when it is used pertaining to contraceptive use. Aspects related to communication examined were, content of discussion, timing and closure of discussion and satisfaction related to discussion concerning contraceptive use.

The sample consisted of 245 subjects in late adolescence from a state university in Southwest Virginia. Subjects were divided into two categories: "Discussers", those who discussed the use of contraception with their last sexual partner; and, "Non-discussers", those who did not discuss the use of contraception with their last sexual partner. Discussers and Non-discussers were then divided into those subjects in casual relationships, and those subjects in exclusive relationships. The data were collected using a pencil and paper questionnaire.

The results indicated a high usage of contraception among Discussers and Non-discussers in the sample. Results also indicate that relationship status appeared to have been a contributor to the use of contraception, (i.e., those in exclusive relationships were more likely to use contraception). It appears that in casual relationships communication may play an important role in the use of contraception in this group. Results indicate that casual Discussers may show some of the same characteristics (i.e., caring about partner) as those subjects in exclusive relationships.

Reynolds, Matthew D. "The use of ERS-1 crossovers and Topex/Poseidon repeat pass data for global sea surface variability studies". Thesis, Aston University, 1998. http://publications.aston.ac.uk/13281/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
In previous sea-surface variability studies, researchers have failed to utilise the full ERS-1 mission due to the varying orbital characteristics in each mission phase, and most have simply ignored the Ice and Geodetic phases. This project aims to introduce a technique which will allow the straightforward use of all orbital phases, regardless of orbit type. This technique is based upon single satellite crossovers. Unfortunately the ERS-1 orbital height is still poorly resolved (due to higher air drag and stronger gravitational effects) when compared with that of TOPEX/Poseidon (T/P), so to make best use of the ERS-1 crossover data corrections to the ERS-1 orbital heights are calculated by fitting a cubic-spline to dual-crossover residuals with T/P. This correction is validated by comparison of dual satellite crossovers with tide gauge data. The crossover processing technique is validated by comparing the extracted sea-surface variability information with that from T/P repeat pass data. The two data sets are then combined into a single consistent data set for analysis of sea-surface variability patterns. These patterns are simplified by the use of an empirical orthogonal function decomposition which breaks the signals into spatial modes which are then discussed separately. Further studies carried out on these data include an analysis of the characteristics of the annual signal, discussion of evidence for Rossby wave propagation on a global basis, and finally analysis of the evidence for global mean sea level rise.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
There is a need to learn more about how managers use accounting information. This thesis investigates how managers make use of business reports; as they are one of the ways managers receive information. Previous research was found to broadly correspond to four important aspects affecting how managers make use of business reports; aggregation, timeliness, flexibility and dimensions. A case study was conducted at NCC Construction. The main findings from this study are that managers have the possibility to view information in the reports at their desired level of specificity and they are not concerned about the issue of timeliness. Furthermore they are satisfied with flexibility in reports, but wish for more capabilities and do not desire non-financial information in reports. Therefore the four aspects are found to no longer be a hindrance to managers in their use of business reports as much as could be expected from previous studies. Technological developments and business practices are found to have changed managerial work. Reporting has become faster and is more accurately reflecting the real world operations, making business reports more useful to managers.

Abstract (sommario):
A descriptive correlational study was conducted to develop and test a Universal Precautions (UP) Scale designed to monitor nurses' compliance with the practice of universal precautions in the hospital setting. Subscales of the Universal Precautions Scale included barrier precautions usage, personal carefulness factors and handwashing. Nurses (n = 59) working in special care units completed the demographic survey, the UP scale, and the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale. Concurrent validity was investigated by observing handwashing behavior of a subgroup (n = 34) of those nurses surveyed. Self-report of handwashing frequency did not correlate with observed handwashing frequency, although observed handwashing adequacy did relate with self-reported handwashing adequacy and personal carefulness factors. The UP scale, as constructed, was not related to the handwashing behavior, one behavioral indicator of use of universal precautions, but has demonstrated a potential for further refinement and testing.

Udeh, Jennifer. "New product development within small-medium sized enterprises : innovation report". Thesis, University of Warwick, 2012. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/56906/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Innovation is of increasing importance for raising the productivity, competitiveness and growth potential of modern economies (BIS 2010). New products are a form of innovation and New Product Development (NPD) is the term used to describe the innovation process of commercialising a new product idea. Due to the nature of innovation small-medium sized enterprises (SMEs) produce, typically ‘novel’ new-to-the world offerings that provide the highest potential contribution to the economy and businesses themselves, there is an increasing emphasis on NPD within SMEs. Despite this, there is a gap between existing knowledge of the requirements of success and their application in practice. Furthermore, there is increasing recognition within the literature that the process of innovation requires on-going maintenance, disciplined audit and renewal (Leonard-Barton 1995). SMEs in particular are finding the implementation of NPD success factors challenging(Humphreys, McAdam et al. 2005; Owens 2007) and there are limited in-depth studies on how this is achieved in practice. The research provides an understanding of the challenges SMEs face in adopting NPD success factors and develops an approach to overcome these challenges and support sustained success. The research consists of two cycles of action research involving active engagement within two independent SME contexts. The first cycle provided practical insights into challenges including factors relating to: people, process, politics and technology within SMEs. As a result the research focus was refined to consider learning as a mechanism to support the implementation and the renewal of successful NPD practices. A new model is developed, namely Logical Learning, which facilitates the development of: knowledge, skills and attitude within SMEs, for this purpose. The second cycle of action research developed a unique NPD programme that implemented the Logical Learning model within SMEs. Moreover, a comprehensive and rigorous framework for learning evaluation is developed and formally validated the significance of the model. Evidence has been generated that links the application of the model to learning within SMEs, learning to changes in behaviour and NPD practices, and changes in behaviour to organisation results. Logical Learning was initially applied through a regional programme in the West Midlands, UK, which supported innovation within SMEs. Following success over an 18 month period, the programme competed for and won a national contract to continue to deliver this support. Therefore a nationwide roll-out is currently planned. The implementation of the model has impacted on the commercial success of SMEs, so far resulting in 8 new product introductions to market. These product innovations have generated actual sales of between £50,000 and £14 million within individual SMEs for the period 2011-2012, with businesses forecasting significant increases of over 400% in the year ahead. Collectively these SMEs have generated 93 additional jobs within the West Midlands, which contribute to economic development within the UK. Additionally the SMEs have developed NPD capabilities including the implementation of more formalised approaches and effective resource management. Moreover, these SMEs report further business development achievements including establishing partnerships with marketleading organisations, international distribution agreements and further private investment to support business growth. The research proves how learning is at the heart of these achievements and provides a new perspective on how it is facilitated, to successfully improve: knowledge, skills and attitudes and ensure SMEs are better equipped to sustain NPD success.

Abstract (sommario):
A recent growth in textual analysis research in the accounting and finance literature relies heavily on context to draw conclusions about the readability or sentiment of the text under study. Yet the complexity of the text used in the financial disclosure is also relevant in evaluating readability and sentiment. Experimental results in this dissertation thesis show that a change in annual report complexity is associated with a change in the probability that a subject will comprehend the information being communicated in the disclosure. Specifically, increasing the complexity of an annual report disclosure dampens the probability that a subject will understand good news disclosures and accentuates the probability that a subject will understand bad news disclosures. Experimental results in this dissertation thesis also demonstrate that a change in annual report complexity is associated with a change in the probability that a subject will be optimistic about the nature of the news being communicated in the disclosure. Specifically, an increase in the complexity of an annual report disclosure reduces the probability that a subject will be optimistic about neutral news disclosures, decreases the probability that a subject will be optimistic about good news disclosures, and increases the probability that a subject will be optimistic about bad news disclosures. Further, experimental results show that subjects utilize the Financial Statements, Management's Discussion and Analysis, and Business Data sections of the annual report more frequently than the Notes to Financial Statements section of the annual report. These results should be of interest to regulators, public corporations, and readers of annual report disclosures.

Abstract (sommario):
Servitization has been a recognized business phenomenon since the late 1980s to innovate a business’s capabilities and processes to create value for their customer through service. Recent technological advances, particularly in the capabilities being developed by the Internet of Things (IoT) could be an enabler for a servitzation transition at an organization. Servitization, enabled by the Internet of Things (IoT), has not been considered in the context of Small to Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs). Due to the traits of SMEs, the potential opportunities from effectively servitizing their business models and the accessibility and affordability of IoT sensors, equipment and tools, there is a gap to be explored. This research provides an understanding of the many challenges SMEs face to remain competitive. Additionally, the research develops a framework that can help to overcome some of these challenges through the utilization of a Servitization business model and IoT technology and capability. The investigation and development of IoT-enabled Servitization for SMEs could potentially lead to new knowledge and innovation. Initially, main traits of SMEs were identified and then aspects of IoT and servitization were ascertained to find those that best align with the SME unique traits. From this understanding, a framework was developed that will allow Small to Medium sized Enterprises to utilise the technology and capabilities from the IoT in order to develop servitization within their business. This framework was then further developed through a longitudinal case study with an SME and validated by a range of industry stakeholders. The outcome resulted in a conceptual framework, based on academic literature, evolved in a real-world case study, and validated by professionals and stakeholders. This validation was conducted through the dissemination of the material on a professional program MSc module, presentation of the research at international conferences, and an event held with regional SMEs to gain insight on the final version of the framework. The framework can be used by SMEs or those consulting SMEs to help them develop strategy that creates value added services in their business that are enabled by the IoT.

Hooshmand, Salman. "Efficient Reconstruction of User Sessions from HTTP Traces for Rich Internet Applications". Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/36750.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The generated HTTP traffic of users' interactions with a Web application can be logged for further analysis. In this thesis, we present the ``Session Reconstruction'' problem that is the reconstruction of user interactions from recorded request/response logs of a session. The reconstruction is especially useful when the only available information about the session is its HTTP trace, as could be the case during a forensic analysis of an attack on a website. New Web technologies such as AJAX and DOM manipulation have provided more responsive and smoother Web applications, sometimes called ``Rich Internet Applications''(RIAs). Despite the benefits of RIAs, the previous session reconstruction methods for traditional Web applications are not effective anymore. Recovering information from a log in RIAs is significantly more challenging as compared with classical Web applications, because the HTTP traffic contains often only application data and no obvious clues about what the user did to trigger that traffic. This thesis studies applying different techniques for efficient reconstruction of RIA sessions. We define the problem in the context of the client/server applications, and propose a solution for it. We present different algorithms to make the session reconstruction possible in practice: learning mechanisms to guide the session reconstruction process efficiently, techniques for recovering user-inputs and handling client-side randomness, and also algorithms for detections of actions that do not generate any HTTP traffic. In addition, to further reduce the session reconstruction time, we propose a distributed architecture to concurrently reconstruct a RIA session over several nodes. To measure the effectiveness of our proposed algorithms, a prototype called D-ForenRIA is implemented. The prototype is made of a proxy and a set of browsers. Browsers are responsible for trying candidate actions on each state, and the proxy, which contains the observed HTTP trace, is responsible for responding to browsers' requests and validating attempted actions on each state. We have used this tool to measure the effectiveness of the proposed techniques during session reconstruction process. The results of our evaluation on several RIAs show that the proposed solution can efficiently reconstruct use-sessions in practice.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis investigates the effectiveness of communication between assurors and assurance report users, and the role that assurance reports play in this process. It comprises two behavioural experiments undertaken in the context of: (i) wording changes to the audit report (developed product) using shareholders as participants; and (ii) the role of assurance and type of assurance provider for corporate social responsibility reporting (evolving product), using financial analysts as participants. In both studies effectiveness of communication is examined in terms of report users?? perceptions and investment decision-making. The theoretical framework used in these studies is adapted from a communications model developed by Shannon and Weaver (1949), and supplemented by psychology research focused on source credibility (Birnbaum and Stegner, 1979). Two key elements of the communication process are recognised; the: (i) message transmitted; and (ii) source of the message. The first element is considered in the first experiment; the second element in the second study. Useful feedback is provided to standard-setters. From the first study, report users?? perceptions are not impacted by changes to the wording of the audit report. However, in the second experiment they are affected by differences in the source of the message. In terms of trustworthiness, financial analysts perceive the credibility of the source of corporate social responsibility information to be significantly greater when assured. For a company in an industry with stronger incentives to report positive corporate social responsibility information, they perceive the credibility (trustworthiness, overall credibility) of the source of the information to be significantly greater when assured. They also discern differences between types of assuror whereby the credibility (trustworthiness, expertise, overall credibility) of the source of information is perceived to be greater when assured by a professional accountant than a sustainability expert. A contribution of these experiments is the analysis of report users?? investment decision-making, as well as their perceptions. Differences in the message and source of the message for assurance reporting have no impact on report users?? investment decisions. Differences in characteristics of report users (familiarity with reports, extent to which reports are understandable) appear to impact report users?? perceptions and merits further examination.

Abstract (sommario):
Executive Summary During 2010-2012, a Leonardo da Vinci-funded EU project focused on enhancing the language skills of Deaf people, interpreters and Health Care Professionals. Project partners from Cyprus, Ireland, Poland, Scotland and Sweden reviewed current knowledge of policy and practice, and embedded the resulting analysis into a programme of materials to support reflection, knowledge and skills development internationally. This report presents the project's initial 'state-of-the-art' review, with particular reference to the partner countries. Sign languages are now widely recognised, for theoretical and practical purposes, as full, natural languages, and sign language interpreting has consequently been established as a respected profession. Sign language interpreters mediate between hearing and deaf people: this entails a complex transfer of meaning between languages, cultural domains and linguistic modalities, and between members of highly literate communities and those whose languages have no written form. Decades of development in understanding of the most effective part to be played by interpreters in small-group dialogue have concluded that communication is best facilitated with recognition of the interpreter as a linguistic partner, and an active participant in the joint creation of meaning. Good practice in interpreting rarely entails a passive role whereby the interpreter acts as a mere conduit for others' words.   In respect of healthcare interpreting, the situation in the partner countries (and beyond) varies widely, from minimal recognition of the need for dedicated provision for deaf patients, to relatively explicit and well-resourced entitlement to services. In none of the partner countries do services address all identified requirements, despite recognition that inadequate provision can lead to damaging and indeed life-threatening consequences. Training and associated resources for all three key groups – interpreters, healthcare staff and deaf people – are insufficient or non-existent across the board. No-one has a stable, clear set of expectations about how communication can most effectively proceed in these situations. In this context, it is predictable that regulation of quality can be highly problematic. Comparison with North America and Australia highlights a range of adoptable best practices, requiring investment over time in order to generate and implement more effective approaches. It must be recognised that the mere provision of sign language interpreters is only the beginning of true access to healthcare for deaf people. In order to maximise positive outcomes, members of all three key groups must become familiar with a common set of assumptions and practices to reinforce the need to operate as a collaborating triad in the co-constructing of effective interaction. Consistent, high-quality outcomes need to be assured through empowered regulatory mechanisms, for which models exist internationally.

Abstract (sommario):
yes
In the UK at present Taser electrical stun weapons can only be used by trained firearms officers in situations where the use of firearms is also authorised. But the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) is asking for these `non-lethal¿ weapons to be made more widely available to other police officers. If this is agreed there will be significant implications for the use of force by police in the UK. In July 2005 the Home Office Minister, Hazel Blears, had stated that the Taser was a dangerous weapon and not appropriate for wider use. The rationale behind the deployment of `non-lethal¿ or `less-lethal¿ weapons, such as the Taser, is to provide police officers with an alternative to lethal force for dangerous and lifethreatening situations they face. Wider availability of such weapons should, it is argued, further limit the need to resort to lethal firearms and thereby reduce incidence of serious injury and death. Over the past few months senior police officers have issued public statements that the Taser weapon should be made available to all officers on the beat. They argue that because police are facing dangerous individuals on an everyday basis, the Taser is required to protect their officers and deal with violent offenders without having to call in a firearms unit in certain situations. A crucial point about this proposal is that it would represent a scaling up in the `visible¿ arming of police officers in the UK. It is claimed by opponents that such an extended use of Taser would actually result in an increase in the level of force used by police in the UK, a concern also echoed by the Independent Police Complaints Committee (IPCC) in the minute of their 27 April 2005 `Casework and Investigations Committee¿ meeting.

Abstract (sommario):
Background: Given the rapid expansion of antiretroviral therapy (ART) services in South Africa, there is growing recognition of the importance of fertility intentions, contraceptive use and childbearing among women living with HIV (WLHIV). With the integration of family planning services in the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) services, understanding fertility intentions and contraceptive use is crucial in evaluating such programs. We investigated the relationship between future fertility intentions, contraceptive use and repeat pregnancies among WLHIV in Cape Town, South Africa. Methodology: We analyzed data from the MCH-ART study conducted at the Gugulethu Midwife Obstetric Unit (MOU) in Cape Town, South Africa, which followed women initiating ART during pregnancy through 36-60 months postpartum. Self-report data were collected using standardized questionnaires at repeated study visits. Data on repeat pregnancies were abstracted from the Western Cape Provincial Data Centre. Associations between maternal characteristics and repeat pregnancies were examined using Cox proportional hazards models. Results: Overall, 109 incident repeat pregnancies were recorded among the 471 women included in this analysis. The median time at risk per individual was 4.27 years. The rate of repeat pregnancies was 5.72 per 100 person-years (PY). This rate was significantly lower among women aged 35-45 years (2.11/100PY) compared to women aged 18-24 years [7.56/100 PY; adjusted hazard ratio (aHR), 0.26: 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.09, 0.81). A total of 333 women contributed data on future fertility intentions and contraceptive use at 12 months postpartum, with 9% reporting that they wanted another child in the future, and 82% reporting current contraceptive use; 16% (n=54) reported not wanting another child but no contraceptive use. The rate of repeat pregnancies was 3 folds higher among women who reported wanting a child in the future (12.59/100 PY) compared to women who did not want 5 a child in the future (4.31/100 PY; aHR, 3.46: 95% CI, 1.83, 6.50). Contraceptive use at 12 months postpartum was not associated with repeat pregnancies. Women who did not want a child and used contraceptives had a 45% decreased hazard of repeat pregnancies compared to women who did not want a child and did not use contraceptives (aHR 0.55: 95% CI [0.32, 0.94]. Conclusion: Among women initiating ART during pregnancy, a repeat pregnancy incidence rate of 5.72/100 PY was observed through 36-60 months postpartum, with the incidence lower among older women. At 12 months postpartum, a notable proportion of women reported not wanting another child but no contraceptive use. Wanting a child in the future was associated with a higher rate of repeat pregnancy, but contraceptive use at 12 months postpartum was not associated with repeat pregnancies. These results highlight the importance of understanding factors associated with the dissonance between fertility intentions and contraceptive use and childbearing to ensure delivery of quality integrated reproductive health services in the PMTCT framework.

Haber, Gillian. "Use of structural equation modeling to examine the association between breast cancer risk perception and repeat screening mammography among United States woman". FIU Digital Commons, 2010. https://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/3971.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in United States women, estimated to be diagnosed in 1 out of 8 women in their lifetime. Screening mammography detects breast cancer in its pre-clinical stages when treatment strategies have the greatest chance of success, and is currently the only population-wide prevention method proven to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with breast cancer. Research has shown that the majority of women are not screened annually, with estimates ranging from 6% - 30% of eligible women receiving all available annual mammograms over a 5-year or greater time frame. Health behavior theorists believe that perception of risk/susceptibility to a disease influences preventive health behavior, in this case, screening mammography. The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the association between breast cancer risk perception and repeat screening mammography using a structural equation modeling (SEM) framework. A series of SEM multivariate regressions were conducted using selfreported, nationally representative data from the 2005 National Health Interview Survey. Interaction contrasts were tested to measure the potential moderating effects of variables which have been shown to be predictive of mammography use (physician recommendation, economic barriers, structural barriers, race/ethnicity) on the association between breast cancer risk perception and repeat mammography, while controlling for the covariates of age, income, region, nativity, and educational level. Of the variables tested for moderation, results of the SEM analyses identify physician recommendation as the only moderator of the relationship between risk perception and repeat mammography, thus the potentially most effective point of intervention to increase mammography screening, and decrease the morbidity and mortality associated with breast cancer. These findings expand the role of the physician from recommendation to one of attenuating the effect of risk perception and increasing repeat screening. The long range application of the research is the use of the SEM methodology to identify specific points of intervention most likely to increase preventive behavior in population-wide research, allowing for the most effective use of intervention funds.

Adolescence, a critical developmental period, requires a certain level of adjustment and may negatively impact youth psychosocial development. Unsurprisingly, adolescent substance use continues to be a major public global health concern. Additionally, some adolescents are immersed in various interpersonal relationships and exposed to various stressors daily, which may affect their psychological well-being and developmental trajectories. This research aimed to explore the experiences of interpersonal relationships, stress and coping, and determine substance use patterns, symptoms of two common mental disorders (depression and generalized anxiety) amongst adolescents who report using substances (legal and illegal) in low-income communities in South Africa by employing Bronfenbrenner’s bio-ecological theory and the person-process-context-time model as a theoretical lens.

Abstract (sommario):

The thesis presents a user interface design aimed at the scenario where a dual representation of a volume is desired in order to emphasize certain parts of a volume using surface graphics while the rest of the volume is rendered using direct volume rendering techniques. A typical situation in which this configuration can prove useful is when studying images acquired for medical purposes. Sometimes the user wants to identify and represent an organ using an opaque surface in an otherwise partly opaque visualization of the volume data set. The design is based on the visualization library VTK along with Trolltech Qt, a GUI Toolkit in C++. The choice of using VTK as a visualization library was made after evaluating similar systems. The report includes a state of the art chapter, the requirements for the system, the system design and the results achieved after implementing the design are shown.

McManamay, Rachel Harris. "Assessing the Impacts of Balsam Woolly Adelgid (Adelges Piceae Ratz.) and Anthropogenic Disturbance on the Stand Structure and Mortality of Fraser Fir (Abies Fraseri (Pursh) Poir.) in the Black Mountains, North Carolina". Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/42759.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Over the past several decades, naturally occurring populations of Fraser fir (Abies fraseri) in the Black Mountains of North Carolina have been heavily impacted by both direct and indirect anthropogenic disturbances, including logging and logging- associated fires, and high mortality rates due to the introduction of the exotic insect, balsam woolly adelgid (BWA) (Adelges piceae). The decline in Fraser fir is particularly concern because it serves as a foundation species within the spruce-fir forests of the Southern Appalachian Mountains. Our objectives for this research were to 1) use current stand structure to infer whether Fraser fir trees are experiencing a cycle of regeneration-mortality that will lead to eventual decline of the population, 2) determine what role, if any, the site-specific geographic variables of slope, elevation, aspect, and land use history have on stand structure, mortality, and BWA infestation level, and 3) analyze repeat aerial photography to examine broad trends of spruce-fir forest cover change caused by anthropogenic disturbance and the BWA. In order to understand stand structure, mortality, and infestation levels, we conducted detailed field surveys of Fraser fir trees throughout the Black Mountains using 44, fixed-radius circular sampling plots. These plots were placed throughout a series of aspects, elevations, and disturbance types in order to understand geographic variability among these variables. An analysis of 4 repeat aerial photographs and corroborating ground photographs revealed broad spatio-temporal trends of spruce-fir regeneration and mortality from 1954 to 2006. Our results indicate that Fraser fir stands at higher elevations are currently in a state of recovery; whereas stands at lower elevations appear to be more susceptible to BWA-induced mortality. Changes in forest cover area from 1954 to 2006 were influenced greatly by direct and indirect anthropogenic disturbance. Our results call attention to the significant impact that direct and indirect anthropogenic disturbance has had on Fraser fir stand structure, but also provide evidence for the ability of an imperiled ecosystem to recover from high rates of insect caused mortality.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
In recent years companies across different sectors have been facing a new competitive environment, characterized by an increase in the number of competitors, shorter product cycles and changing customer demand. In order to cope with these challenges and to achieve competitive advantage, companies are engaged in alliances and partnerships with other organizations and closer collaboration with suppliers and customers. Accordingly companies have turned their attention towards improving the management of their supply chains to achieve competitive advantage. One way to improve the management of supply chain is through process integration, which offers potential benefits such as cost reduction, creation of value by increasing profits, market share and strengthening competitive position. E-business has been considered by both researchers and companies as an option to construct supply chain integration. However evidence found in the e-business and supply chain literature shows a number of technical and organizational challenges faced by organizations regarding the use and adoption of e-business for the improvement of supply chain management (SCM). One of the organizational challenges is the necessity to change business processes to support the successful adoption and use of e-business technologies. This challenge has been highlighted in the supply chain and e-business literature to be at the core of a successful adoption and use of e-business. A literature search and review was conducted to find a methodology to conduct business process redesign (BPR) to adopt e-business for SCM improvement. From the review it was found that although a number of methodologies exist on business process redesign, supply chain redesign and e-business process design there is a lack of an integrated methodology to conduct business process redesign to support e-business adoption for supply chain management improvement. Through an inductive approach of pattern recognition from reviewing different methodologies (Kettinger, Teng and Guha, 1997) in three different domains: business process redesign, supply chain redesign and e-business process design, a methodology embedded within an action research approach to conduct business process redesign is proposed to support e-business technologies adoption for supply chain management improvement. This proposed BPR methodology can potentially be adapted to any company on any sector, this is possible due to the type of techniques and methods employed in the methodology which can be used on any BPR project to support the adoption of e-business for the improvement of supply chain management. This methodology is tested and validated through a practical application in an independent Airline Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) provider giving as a result a redesign of the component services process. This methodology will require further validation; however results from its application in an independent airline MRO provider show it can clearly guide and produce a business process redesign to support e-business adoption for supply chain management improvement.

Edun, Anya T. "Aggressive Personality: The Use of a New Self-Report Measure Built from Justification Mechanisms". FIU Digital Commons, 2011. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/391.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This study explored the relationship between a new self-report measure built from justification mechanisms of aggression (i.e., the basis of conditional reasoning; James, 1998) with a traditional explicit measure and an implicit conditional reasoning measure of aggression. The construct validity and generalizability of the new measure were investigated by using non-work related criteria (violent acts, traffic violations, alcohol use, competitiveness, and agreeableness) in an undergraduate student sample. Correlations and moderated hierarchical multiple regressions were used to assess the relationships between variables. The results support the literature in that both explicit and implicit components of personality need to be examined. In conclusion, the newly developed measure fills a gap in the literature by operationalizing aggression as reasons for behaving aggressively. It is similar to the explicit aggression measure in that it is a self-report; however, the moderate correlation between the two suggests that each is measuring slightly different aspects of aggression.
