Abstract (sommario):
Let whoever may have attained to so much as to have the power of drawing know that he holds a great treasure ... Michelangelo The tradition of architectural drawings and making as a means of design thinking in a constant feedback loop results in discoveries that facilitate creative thinking in an iterative process. In the digital age, notion of drawing and making by hand as a cognitive process of thinking is fading. This trend is increasingly evident in upper-level architecture students who depend strictly on digital tools for design thinking, missing many critical decisionmaking steps. Concepts of scale, diagramming, composition, materiality are missing − part of the challenge is the computer screen and the lack of tactical autonomy with physical materials − pen, pencil, brush, architectural scale, materiality, construction, assemblage. How can we as educators assert that drawings are not just architectural representations, but a means to architectural inquiry? Why is it critical for our students to use hand drawings, sketching and diagramming when exploring ideas? Can small gestural models provide notions of scale, materiality, and construction? Teaching pedagogy has always engaged new modes of design thinking and communications as a way of design inquiry − a trait essential to architects. Historically, since the Renaissance, drawings have been the catalyst to advance architectural discourse. In the 20th century, different movements such as De Stijl, Constructivism and Bauhaus used a multi-disciplinary approach combining art and technology through the lens of drawing and making that led to a new wave of design pedagogy to push their imaginations into new territories which the digital augmented as technology advanced. We believe that today’s students need to continue to develop both hand and digital skills in tandem to optimize design thinking, making and presentation techniques. In doing so, they can advance architectural pedagogy to new heights as those before did; critically in a material and physical sense: as an embodied spatial experience.

Abstract (sommario):
In May 1931 the ballet Sahdji premiered at the Eastman Theatre in Rochester, New York: with a libretto by Harlem Renaissance's Alain Locke and Richard Bruce Nugent, music by composer William Grant Still, the ballet by Thelma Biracree, and dedicated to the Eastman School's Howard Hanson, the work was set in Africa and performed by dancers in blackface. In 1934 the work was performed with an all-black cast in Chicago and revived in Rochester through 1950. Sahdji demonstrates that the participants shared two tenets: the desire to create high art, and the belief in African forms to achieve artistic aims. Locke and Nugent had a small shared world that included Lincoln Kirstein. Locke wrote about The Rite of Spring, and Sahdji became Locke's African answer to Spring. Sahdji begs for a reinvigoration of dance history that credits philosophical underpinnings of the American ballet to the Harlem Renaissance and its queer connections.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of the article was to find, scientifically define and locate the most frequent occurrences of the Late Renaissance garden units of the Carpathian Basin. This article - as partial result of a research work entitled "Castle Garden Inventory in the Carpathian Basin" and conducted by teachers and students of the Faculty of Landscape Architecture and Urbanism of Szent István University, Budapest - aims to identify through historical research, on-site visits and assessments the current status of 148 Late Renaissance residency gardens located in seven different countries of the Carpathian Basin (Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Croatia and Slovenia). Based on the archival and literary sources as well as the field studies carried out, we defined the spatial distribution of Late Renaissance residential gardens, we delineated six very characteristic Late Renaissance garden units and we defined the most typical Late Renaissance garden features for the region. At the same time, we explored and documented still existing values of garden history at some locations from the Renaissance era.

Abstract (sommario):
A rhetorical analysis of the five funerary poems in T.T. Cloete’s AlloiroopThis article works from the premise that these poems form part o f a tradition that can he traced back to the funerary poetry of the Dutch Renaissance and from there to the funeral orations of Classical times. After referring to the current revival of interest in rhetoric, attention is given to the role which rhetoric played in Renaissance poetics and the influence it had on the practice of writing funerary poetry. The funerary poems in Cloete's Allotroop are then analysed, making use of the Renaissance descriptions of and prescriptions for funerary poetry researched by S.F. Witstein in Funeraire poëzie in de Nederlandse Renaissance. These analyses prove that Cloete’s poems make use of the elements basic to the Renaissance funerary poem and the classical funeral oration namely praise (laus), mourning (luctus) and consolation (consolatio) and that the rhetorical terminology devised centuries ago can still be useful in the reading of these poems.

Abstract (sommario):
The scope and accomplishment of Renaissance literary and visual forms of self-expression, regardless of the mode of their interpretation today, offer proof of the idea of the Renaissance as an age of creation of the modern self. Extensive research has indicated that selfconstruction is the product of a combination of social, economic, political and intellectu-al forces. Still, can they determine the self fully or is there also something that cannot be processed? Letters, astrological and alchemical studies, drama and theatre and, in particular, Renaissance Neoplatonism, indicate that the Renaissance self, the elite self at least, is free and resistent, strongly individualized. Homo humanus is in harmony with the constructed ego ideal of his age but he is also focused on gnothi seaut?n, conscious of his own singolarita, unique and inimitable.

Abstract (sommario):
First, where does the Renaissance fit in chronologically with other periods of the past? There is general agreement that the Renaissance should be dated from 1300 to 1650, though some believe that a more accurate and meaningful starting date would be 1400/1450. The Middle Ages is generally taken to be the period 500 to 1500 (a considerable overlap with the Renaissance then), though some would date the start to the Arab conquests beginning about 640. A period of the Middle Ages is traditionally known as the ‘Dark Age(s)’. Those who believe that the term is still appropriate (many reject it because of its negative connotations) date this from 500/600 to 800, though some extend it to 1000. (See later for the origins of the terms ‘Renaissance’, ‘Middle Ages’ and ‘Dark Age(s)’.)

Cochrane, Peter. "The Wild Beasts". VCU Scholars Compass, 2019. https://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/5917.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The Wild Beasts springs from my desire to thank my ever-expanding queer chosen family and mentors for their strength. Working through the often violent and othering aspects of the lens and photographic histories I create floral portraits responding to each person’s being and our relationship. Using the 19th century, 8x10 large format view camera—the same used by colonialists and ethnographers to “capture” the divinity of Nature—I erect each as a traditional still life studio setup at the threshold between the natural world and that constructed by humans. These environments speak both to the character of each friend and also to the use of Nature against queer people in most legal systems across the planet. We are deemed unnatural and made criminals through inequitable semantics. The 8x10 negative becomes a portrait, a darkroom contact print that is gifted to each of The Wild Beasts, an intimate artifact of my gratitude. At these borders I lash at the histories of oppression, remaking these lineages and tools into spaces for empathy, tenderness, and love.

Abstract (sommario):
In this article, the author analyzes how the broad theme of the reception of Humanism and Renaissance is treated in two important histories of Ukrainian literature, respectively Muza Roksolans’ka. Ukrajins’ka literatura XVI-XVIII stolit’ by Valerij Ševčuk (Kyiv, “Lybid'”, 2004-2005), in two volumes, and Istorija ukrajins’koji literatury in twelve volumes (2014-) published by the publishing house of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Naukova Dumka. The disappearance of Soviet ideological constraints has brought about the emergence of various aspects of this theme: the multilingualism (especially as regards literature written in Latin), the multiple identity of writers of the so-called Pohranyččja, the literature written in Latin, are just a few. However, some aspects still need to be addressed: among then the supranational approach should be adequately considered when dealing with the spread of Humanism-Renaissance.

Abstract (sommario):
Thanks to his part in the rediscovery of Lucretius in the Renaissance Poggio Bracciolini has been much in academic news recently. But he was always there as a part of the histories of that moment, in all its twists and turns, as an example of what it was to be a Renaissance humanist in the earlier part of the XVth century. He was born in 1380 and educated first in Arezzo. But he soon moved to Florence to become a notary and from his intellectual contacts there a little after 1403 he became a member of the entourage of Pope Benedict IX to remain all his life a member of the Papal court. But, in true humanist fashion, he was busy always with his writings, taking on a range of general subjects, nobility, the vicissitudes of Fortune and many others. Also, again in true humanist fashion, he was often involved in dispute with other scholars, most notably Lorenzo Valla. Yet, amidst all this activity, he had time to travel throughout Europe, scouring libraries to uncover, as with Lucretius, long neglected texts. But perhaps his most notable achievement was the design of a new script, moving away from the less legible texts of medieval copyists to provide one, far easier to read, that was to become the model in Italy for the first printed books – as it is a model still for publishers. Few scholars of that moment can claim to have had so profound and persistent an influence on the spread of culture in Europe and beyond.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThe doctrine for legal imputation (including the derivative concepts of legal charging, suing, indicting, prosecuting and judging) of detrimental health effects to those responsible for radiation exposure situations has been a matter of debate for many years and its resolution is still unclear. While the attribution of harm in the situations involving high radiation dose is basically straightforward, the challenge arises at medium doses and becomes a real conundrum for the very common situations of exposure to low radiation doses. The ambiguous situation could be construed to be a Damocles sword for the renaissance of endeavours involving occupational and public radiation exposure. This chapter describes the epistemological situation on the attribution of radiation health effects and the inference of radiation risks, relying on estimates from the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) reported to the UN General Assembly. It discusses the implications of UNSCEAR’s refined paradigm for assigning legal liability. The chapter concludes with a recommendation to develop an international legal doctrine on the ability to impute detrimental radiation health effects.

Abstract (sommario):
The primary purpose of the paper is to present research analysis which aims to recognize the art of Kosovan piano music through analysis for interpretation as a relatively new discipline born in the late 90s that today in the world counts numerous publications. The qualitative-descriptive methodology is used in this paper. It entails interpreting and analyzing music, with a focus on Rauf Dhomis Opus 70 Pieces for Piano. Many European countries have previously experienced the splendor and enchantment of the Renaissance, but Kosovo is currently undergoing a true Renaissance following its independence in 2008. The general characteristics of the Kosovan Renaissance have been reflected in less than twenty years, with a clean impetus and energy that has built through time in the entire nation, includingall aspects of life, and thus the sphere of art, and the magical world of music. Despite the challenges that the Kosovan artist has faced in the past, he still has the ability to overlook themin favor of the beautiful and magical. That is why the Renaissances magic lives on now, granting many artists in the arts, such as instrumentalists, vocalists, and composers, a well- deserved place in Europes and the worlds most prominent stages.

Abstract (sommario):
The underlying purpose of this paper is to evaluate whether the CEN CWA 15627 “Small Punch Test Method for Metallic Materials” first published in 2006 has indeed succeeded in providing a stimulus for a wider implementation of the small punch test technique in industrial applications throughout Europe and indeed worldwide. A wealth of research progress has been apparent, as strongly evidenced in three dedicated SSTT (Small Specimen Testing Techniques) conferences held in Europe over the last five years, but also in the wider literature. In particular it is important to mention the recent publication of a Japanese standard and the announcement of parallel progress in China. The present paper concentrates on progress within Europe from the launch of the Code to the present day. In particular attention is focused on the need for industrial acceptance of the test methodology and methods for evaluating the results. Some scepticism still seems to prevail within sectors of the conventional power generation industry, an industry which can potentially benefit most from successful remanent lifetime extension tools of which small punch testing can be considered as a prime candidate. In spite of this, it is demonstrated that a major proportion of the Small Punch testing research of the last decade has been carried out on power plant steels. Meanwhile it is shown that there is evidence that the original remit of the methodology in assessing the integrity of irradiated nuclear plant remains active, new interest is developing for aerospace and next generation nuclear applications enhancing further the credibility of the Code.

During the period of 20-30th of XXth century, I. L.Tsirelson initiated the establishing of some kindergartens, a lyceum, the “Yeshiva of Tsirelson”, and some other. During the Soviet times, only the Synagogue of Glaziers and Bookbinders functioned in Chisinau. Th e process of national Jewish renaissance in Chisinau started in the late 80s of the XX century. Th e key role in the renaissance had played the future Chief Rabbi of Chisinau and Moldova, Z. L. Abelsky (Habad). During the period of 1990—1992 Z. L. Abelsky established a yeshiva, Jewish kindergarten, two schools and some other cultural objects in the Chisinau. Also, he planned to build a religious and educational complex in the Chisinau. Th e main part of the complex was planned for building at the Rabbi Tsirelson Street at the place of the former “Yeshiva of Tsirelson”. For another part of the complex was planned the Habad-Lubovich Street, near the Synagogue of Glaziers and Bookbinders, which was the residence of Abelsky. Unfortunately, this project had not been implemented. However, the project has not lost its relevance still. In 2013 the Jewish Community of the Republic of Moldova (EORM) again planned to start the restoration project of the “Yeshiva of Tsirelson”, but again without success. Moreover, a new restoration project is planned for the period of 2021—2023.

Abstract (sommario):
At the end of the fifteenth century the Ottoman Empire won the land at the middle of the eastern side of the Adriatic, between the town of Omiš and the Neretva River. Thus exposing the northern settlements of the island of Brač, which were under the Venetian Administration at the time, to immediate danger from the Turkish invasion. The settlement of Pučišća was particularly vulnerable. Therefore, the settlement was intensively fortified, and a series of thirteen individual small coastal towers was built, after which the entire settlement was named Castello Pucischia in 1600. One of these towers –the Aquila tower– had a key role in defending Pučišća during the Ottoman-Venetian War, also known as the War of Cyprus (1570-1573). The Aquila tower was built at the beginning of the sixteenth century and today it is a well-preserved detached building situated on the Pučišća coast. Despite all the damage and transformations endured in the past, all the tower elements have been sufficiently preserved to reconstruct its original appearance, including the residential character of the overall interior: a stone wardrobe and a built-in stone basin (Cro. pilo), a fireplace, stairs, as well as those of a defensive character: mechanisms for lifting the drawbridge, loopholes, cannon openings, channels for extracting gunpowder smoke. The wooden beams’ supports in the walls above the first floor have also been preserved, as well as the barrel vault over the ground floor and the groin vault over the second floor which are still intact even today. On the external of the tower, the original corbels of machicolations as well as the semi-circular cornice above the escarp are partially preserved. By analysing the remains of the tower and by studying historical and bibliographic sources, a reconstruction of the original appearance of the Aquila tower has been made, both for the external and internal part, including transformations that took place over the time, since its construction to the present day. This has contributed to the knowledge of the typology of Renaissance coastal fortifications as well as to providing basis for potential renovation and reconstruction of the Aquila tower.

Abstract (sommario):
The transformation of the walls in the city of Nola between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuriesThe study relating to the town walls of Nola (a city near Naples) is one of the most interesting among those about the Neapolitan military architecture between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The building phases of the defensive walls allow us to retrace two main moments of the Renaissance military architecture. It is to say, from the original and most ancient example of a puntoni struts fortifications, about which we can relate thanks to the precious and detailed Ambrogio Leone de Nola’s description made at the beginning of 1500, to the renewed defensive rampart body designed by el comendador Luis Escrivà during the Toledian period. A thorough recon of the iconographic sources, the regarding of the specialistic historiography, the contemporary theoretical assumptions and, most of all, a thorough recon of the still visible traces in the urban fabric and those emerged during the recent archeological investigations enable us to propose a structured theory about the building of the walls of Nola.

Abstract (sommario):
Smaller size reactors are going to be an important player of the worldwide nuclear renaissance. The economy of scale plays against the development of this kind of reactors, even if sometimes its influence is overestimated so that Small Medium Reactor (SMR) appears to have a Levelised Unit Electricity Cost (LUEC) significantly higher than Large Reactors (LR). However, the economy of scale applies only if the designs of SMR are similar to that of LR, but this is not the case, since the small size allows original design solutions not accessible to large size reactors. The literature already presents studies showing how, under certain assumptions, the Capital Cost and the Operation and Maintenance (O&M) Cost of a site provided by one large reactor is quite similar to another site composed by 4 SMRs providing the same power. However the literature still lacks of this kind of analysis about the decommissioning cost. The paper fulfill this gap investigating the cost breakdown of a decommissioning project and providing a literature review about its cost estimate techniques and managerial approach.

Abstract (sommario):
The traditional spinal surgery is often conducted by hand operation with the help of navigation system which is combined with medical image. Although a veteran surgeon has a good adaptability during surgeries, it will tend to decrease along with the increase in surgery time which causes fatigues and leads to low qualities. Many surgical robots have been developed to assist surgeons in operation, and some of them approved by doctors or researchers are DaVinci (Intuitive Surgical, America) [1], Renaissance (Mazor Robotics, Israel), etc. These robot systems have enhanced the accuracy of operation; however, the adaptabilities are still weakened at the same time. During the pedicle screw drilling, surgeons can well adapt to the spine movements mainly caused by respiration, while it is difficult for these robots to adapt to the movements, indicating that the accuracy might drop in the actual application. Respiratory compensation system is aimed to keep the region of operation stable or reduce the amplitude of fluctuation [2]. The rests of paper introduced the respiratory compensation system and its control algorithm based on infrared tracking data, and experiments were conducted to analyze the accuracy and stability.

Abstract (sommario):
In the ten bas-relief panels of the Gates of Paradise of the Florence Baptistery, Lorenzo Ghiberti depicted episodes from the Old Testament, narrated through a succession of scenes, in which the figurative language also fulfils a catechetical function. The master set the Istorie (Stories) of the main characters of the Bible against a background of landscapes depicting territories and architecture known to him, and sculpting in great detail the flora, fauna and human structures. With regard to the latter, in the fifth, sixth and tenth panels, the scenery consists of monumental architecture inspired by the Classical and Renaissance style, while in the second, third, fourth, seventh and eighth panels Ghiberti depicts dwellings and shelters linked to the local tradition. In a single artefact, the goldsmith-sculptor master offers an overview of the heterogeneous built landscape, providing a faithful description of a whole series of vernacular constructions which, due to their importance and diffusion in the area, are also frequently found in other contemporary artistic works. From this point of view, the panels can be considered an unprecedented source to allow the analysis of the salient features of those widespread traditional architectures in the early 15th century, which still characterise the rural landscape surrounding Florence.

Abstract (sommario):
Digital survey of the fortifications in PiombinoThis paper deals with the documentation and digital survey of fortifications in the historic city of Piombino. During the Renaissance the fortified perimeter of the city was considerably enlarged, both because of the will of the Lords of Piombino, the Appiani, to build a fortified citadel, deeming the previous urban palace inadequate for the ruling family, and to improve the defenses by land with the construction of a rivellino in front of the north door and of a fortress to the east. The defenses, conquered by Valentino’s troops in 1502, were redesigned by Leonardo da Vinci, as documented in the pages of Code II of Madrid, which contains drawings and calculations for the construction of the works. The present project, started in April 2018, plans to carry out an accurate digital survey of fortifications, in order to provide the basis for graphic documentation on which to base further cognitive investigations, from archaeological ones to diagnostic ones. The survey operations were carried out with today’s digital technologies, laser scanners and cameras, creating reliable point clouds and three-dimensional models mapped with texture, from which to extract 2D drawings. The study of the sources, of the texts of Leonardo’s scholars and accurate archaeological investigations will provide the opportunity to further analyze Leonardo’s intervention on the still existing structures.
