Abstract (sommario):
This article considers three emergent themes from informal discussions with fourth and fifth graders about their book selections from the Vermont Childrenߣs Choice program. Twelve students were interviewed about how they selected books from the list.’ Student responses showed that they held the DCF nominee list in high regard, that they relied heavily on peers for suggestions within the list, and that the broad range of books on the list allowed them to consider their own preferences for titles, authors, and subjects in book selection. The conversations highlighted the importance of student choice in book selection and its possible subsequent impact on the language readers use to describe their reading and themselves as readers; several students compared their experiences choosing from the DCF list with choosing from leveled texts. State and library children’s choice programs offer nominee lists for readers created with different, and often richer, criteria than a narrower focus on readability levels and text characteristics allows.’ When readers have their say in selecting books, they exercise agency in the development of their own reader identities and create rich relationships with books.

Abstract (sommario):
One of the services in the university library is an information system to find the availability of library collections and the location of each collection shelf. But not many of these systems provide a mechanism that can recommend visitors not only about the books they want, but also other related books that may be needed. This study uses association rule mining techniques that are applied to library transaction data to identify relationships between books (titles) that attract visitors' attention. Relationships are built on interesting measurements between the titles, namely support and confidence, where support determines the combination of the most frequently borrowed book titles, while confidence produces the possibility that the title of the book will be borrowed along with other books. The pattern of book titles association with high confidence indicates that the titles are very related so it is recommended for visitors to consider borrowing along with the book they are looking for. In addition, the system can also recommend the procurement of new books and rack configurations to improve the visitor's experience when searching for books on the site. In the experiment, the precision of recommendations generated from the system reached 70%. Web applications were developed to help understand the effectiveness of the recommendation system based on association rules.

Abstract (sommario):
Picture books are a literary genre with multimodal features that plays an important role in children’s education, entertainment and life. Children’s picture books have attracted a lot of attention from the academic circles. At current, scholars mainly focus on the studies of education, culture, translation and literature of children’s picture books, and few of them have studied children’s picture books from the perspective of multimodal stylistics. Therefore, based on the theory of multimodal stylistics, this paper will analyze the multimodal stylistic features of a children’s picture book named Finding Winnie which won the 2016 Caldecott Gold Award. This paper uses a combination of quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis to study the foreground features and stylistic effects of the language, the image, the layout, the color, the typograph and the inter-semiotic relationships in this picture book. It is found that material process, verbal process and relational processes are prominent features of the verbal mode, as well as foreground features. Images are mostly narrative. The verbal text is on the right and below the image, and the characters are in the middle of the image, which both constitute the foreground feature of the layout. Warm colors of yellow and brown and cool colors of green and blue constitute the foreground features of the color mode. The slope and bold typefaces are the foreground features of the typograph mode. The intensified complementary relationship constitutes a prominent feature of the inter-semiotic relationships.

Abstract (sommario):
As a center for learning and information services, STMIK Amikom Purwokerto Library is a source of learning and a source of intellectual activity that is very important for the entire academic community in supporting the achievement of the college Tridharma program. Book lending transaction data, can produce information that is important as supporting decision making when further analyzed. One useful information is that it can provide information in the form of user behavior patterns in borrowing books that are used to maintain the availability of related book stocks to be balanced. This study uses the Generalized Sequential Pattern (GSP) algorithm, which can be used to determine the behavior patterns of users in each transaction and can show relationships or associations between books, both requested simultaneously and sequentially. From the calculations that have been done, 295 frequent sequences are consisting of 3 sequence patterns that are formed from the minimum support of 0.53% or the minimum number of books borrowed, namely 2 books. Three book items have very strong linkages in book lending transactions, namely book code 6690, 2026, and 8131.

Abstract (sommario):
The SMK Negeri 1 Siantar School Library is one of the special libraries located at the SMK Negeri 1 Siantar School. Libraries provide various kinds of library materials such as books, lessons, lesson questions, and other vocational books. After the researcher made observations, the problem that often occurred was books that were borrowed and returned books that had a non-strategic layout, so that library visitors who did not know the placement found it difficult to find the books they wanted to borrow. This research uses data mining techniques, namely the Apriori Algorithm, the Apriori Method is a method for looking for patterns of relationships between one or more items in a dataset. The Apriori method can be used for data on borrowing books at the Siantar 1 State Vocational School School Library, where the composition of the library books (B1) X_Press UN 2019 B. Abstract (sommario):
Purpose Most academic libraries provide book recommendation services to enable readers to recommend books to the libraries. To facilitate decision-making in book acquisition, this study aimed to develop a method to determine the ranking of the recommended books based on the recommender network. Design/methodology/approach The recommender network was conducted to establish relationships among book recommenders and their similar readers by using circulation records. Furthermore, social computing techniques were used to evaluate the degree of representativeness of the recommenders and subsequently applied as a criterion to rank the recommended books. Empirical studies were performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed ranking system. The Spearman’s correlation coefficients between the proposed ranking system and the ranking obtained using reader circulation statistics were used as performance measure. Findings The ranking calculated using the proposed ranking mechanism was highly and moderately correlated to the ranking obtained using reader circulation statistics. The ranking of recommended books by the librarians was moderately and poorly correlated to the ranking calculated using reader circulation statistics. Practical implications The book recommender can be used to improve the accuracy of book recommendations. Originality/value This study is the first that considers the recommender network on library book acquisition. The results also show that the proposed ranking mechanism can facilitate effective book-acquisition decisions in libraries.

Abstract (sommario):
This article has explored on the relationships between humans and nonhuman creatures which has long been a predominant dichotomous conceptualization. Especially it has analyzed Karen Joy Fowler’s book We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves which focuses on the relationship between humans and animals. The book also makes readers think about the interspecies relationship’s ethics and epistemologies as a part of ecopoetics. The present debate over animal rights and the condemnation of speciesism, which accords human creatures’ epistemic and ontological privilege, are central issues in critical and cultural animal studies. The dichotomous view of human-animal relationships holds that there is a categorical border between humans - who are perceived as moral subjects with personal rights and whose internal life is psychologically accessible - and animals, some of which can be considered as companions but always have a lower (or no) status in terms of legal and cultural status and whose minds are inaccessible. To investigate human and animal relations, I have formulated three steps throughout the paper. I have started by discussing recent theories that examine the bond between us and monkeys. Then I have discussed how Kellogg's experiment serves as a significant backdrop to Fowler's book. Finally, I have addressed the novel’s contribution to current critical discussions about human-animal interactions and animal rights, as well as the major plot of the book, which develops when the protagonist learns her own role in the ecopoetics of her chimpanzee sister Fern. The paper has investigated ecopoetics that emphasizes the move from interspecies companionship and togetherness to human superiority and instrumental asymmetry, focusing on the intricate human-animal relationships which recount an environment that causes (non-)human trauma and loss.

Abstract (sommario):
This article is an attempt to develop Geographic Information Systems (GIS) techology into an analytical tool for examining the relationships between the height of the bookshelves and the behavior of library readers in utilizing books within a library. The tool would contain a database to store book-use information and some GIS maps to represent bookshelves. Upon analyzing the data stored in the database, different frequencies of book use across bookshelf layers are displayed on the maps. The tool would provide a wonderful means of visualization through which analysts can quickly realize the spatial distribution of books used in a library. This article reveals that readers tend to pull books out of the bookshelf layers that are easily reachable by human eyes and hands, and thus opens some issues for librarians to reconsider the management of library collections.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Representation plays a vital role in picture books as it has the potential to affect and alter readers’ perceptions through selected techniques and materials. In particular, the portrayal of the older adults in picture books may transfigure social well-being due to its impact on intergenerational relationships. This issue is critical as conventional portrayals may lead to societal misconceptions while constructing dismissive attitudes towards old age affecting intergenerational relationships. This article aims to reflect on how visual and verbal narrative strategies can present intergenerational relations constructively, depicting ageing as a cumulative transitional experience focusing on degrees of maturation through lifelong lived events to be shared with younger generation. As such, the article examines the illustration of ageing in the contemporary picture book, My Grandma’s Photos (2019), presenting an affirmative perspective on tackling possible challenges related to old age. The selected picture book is analysed regarding visual and textual strategies and the selective use of material culture weaved into its storyline. This is supported by structured interviews with the author, Özge Bahar Sunar, and the illustrator, Senta Urgan, to ascertain how the work evolved into its final state. Hence, the article examines the whole making process and how this process contributes to the final narrative. We point out the relevance between the portrayal of the older adult via the life course approach and pinpoint the positive intergenerational relationships. In sum, this article speculates on how My Grandma’s Photos builds bridges between generations through materialities embedded in the text and illustrations.

Abstract (sommario):
Professor Seana Valentine Shiffrin has produced an exciting new book, Speech Matters: On Lying, Morality, and the Law. Shiffrin’s previous rigorous, careful, and morally sensitive work spans contract law, intellectual property, and the freedoms of association and expression. Speech Matters is in line with Shiffrin’s signature move: we ought to reform our social practices and legal and political institutions to, in various ways, address or accommodate moral values—here, a stringent moral prohibition against lying, a strident principle of promissory fidelity, that is, the principle that one ought to keep one’s promises, and the general value of veracity. The book grows out of Shiffrin’s Hempel Lectures at Princeton University and honorary lectures she has given at Cornell and New York Universities. Shiffrin cotaught a seminar with the late Professor Ronald Dworkin, which discussed a prepublication draft of the book (pp. ix–x). The volume is organized into six essentially independent chapters or lectures. Chapters One, Two, and Six began as independent, stand-alone lectures; Shiffrin crafted Chapters Three, Four, and Five to further expand on the arguments of One and Six (p. 4). While the volume bears a unifying theme, Shiffrin intended the chapters to retain their independence as distinct lectures, and she welcomes readers to delve into the chapters independently of one another (p. 4). Speech Matters is, at its core, a rich discussion of moral agency and the normative values of sincerity, truth telling, promissory fidelity, and the effect they ought to bear on personal and social relations, and political and legal institutions. This Review brings forward this unifying theme and provides a critical appraisal, contrasting Shiffrin’s stridently Kantian approach with an alternative foundationally deontic, if less severe, distributive approach.

Abstract (sommario):
There are known gender differences in book preferences in terms of both genre and author gender but their extent and causes are not well understood. It is unclear whether reader preferences for author genders occur within any or all genres and whether readers evaluate books differently based on author genders within specific genres. This article exploits a major source of informal book reviews, the Goodreads.com website, to assess the influence of reader and author genders on book evaluations within genres. It uses a quantitative analysis of 201,560 books and their reviews, focusing on the top 50 user-specified genres. The results show strong gender differences in the ratings given by reviewers to books within genres, such as female reviewers rating contemporary romance more highly, with males preferring short stories. For most common book genres, reviewers give higher ratings to books authored by their own gender, confirming that gender bias is not confined to the literary elite. The main exception is the comic book, for which male reviewers prefer female authors, despite their scarcity. A word frequency analysis suggested that authors wrote, and reviewers valued, gendered aspects of books within a genre. For example, relationships and romance were disproportionately mentioned by women in mystery and fantasy novels. These results show that, perhaps for the first time, it is possible to get large-scale evidence about the reception of books by typical readers, if they post reviews online.

Abstract (sommario):
Social Neuroscience: Integrating Biological and Psychological Explanations of Social Behavior. Eddie Harmon-Jones and Piotr Winkielman (Eds.). 2007. New York: The Guilford Press, 512 pp., $65.00 (HB)I reviewed this book shortly after reading The Neuroscience of Human Relationships, by Louis Cozolino (2006), hoping that this book, which addresses how our brains exist in relationship to other brains, would be an adequate prerequisite for Social Neuroscience. I had concerns that its focus would be the biology of social psychology proper (rather than the biology of social relationships) for which I would be less qualified and less interested. A quick perusal convinced me that the book was indeed about the biological basis of human social behavior. With that information and a review of a similar title, Social Neuroscience: People Thinking About Thinking People (Fein, 2006), I proceeded.

Schaverien, Joy. "Boarding school syndrome and sibling relationships". Siblings 18, n. 1 (1 giugno 2024): 76–90. http://dx.doi.org/10.33212/att.v18n1.2024.76.

Abstract (sommario):
A review of the literature on "boarding school syndrome" reveals very little about the impact on sibling attachments of children raised in a boarding school. Such children grow up as part of a multigenerational "sibling" and social group with its own rules and cultural norms. After initial confusion children adapt to living amongst strangers; whilst some flourish, many struggle to adapt to living in a group. This article revisits some of the interviews conducted when researching the book Boarding School Syndrome (Schaverien, 2015) with additional and more recent material. In the book there were stories of siblings separated by the stay of one, or both of them, in boarding school. The focus was on children who were sent away and the multiple losses suffered by these children. Here the aim is to focus on the psychological impact of being raised as a member of a large boarding school group, and on sibling relationships, including the immense losses suffered by sibling(s) left at home.

Abstract (sommario):
Despite their proliferation in many parts of the world, book clubs have received little attention from academic researchers. This study seeks to understand the status of book clubs particularly in the Arab world. An in-depth illustration of the status of Arab book clubs was provided by 18 moderators from six Arab countries. The findings indicated that Arab book clubs operate in several distinctive ways; ranging from formal, highly structured meetings, to informal, friendly gatherings. The findings also revealed the motivations for establishing the book clubs in the Arab world. In this respect, participants set high expectations for personal growth, interpersonal relationships, and social responsibility. However, Arab books clubs faced several challenges as perceived by the participants in this study. Several suggestions were made for the sustainability of Arab book clubs. The implications of the findings for librarians, educators, and the general public are also emphasized to create momentum for their continuity.
