Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The following study examined identity construction and community formation within the comic book fan community on the social media website, Twitter It had three objectives It investigated how comic book fans constructed their respective identities on Twitter, explored how fans came to identify with the comic book community and why it formed, and aimed to discover how the community was maintained and expanded The study applied an ethnographic method that relied on the analysis of dialogue Ten comic book fans (five males, five females) that frequently used Twitter to communicate with other fans were video interviewed It was found that comic book fans constructed their identities using their Twitter biography and profile picture and they all believed they were communicating their true and genuine selves The biography, profile picture, and tweets reinforced the rhetoric of what it meant to be a comic book fan It was this visual and written rhetoric that enabled comic book fans to identify with one another and bring the community into being Without this rhetoric, there is no community The community maintained itself through the continued reinforcement of this rhetoric It expanded itself by bringing comic book fans from different backgrounds, locations, and nationalities together online around a shared interest The study also found that the relationships formed within the community could develop into real friendships, the same caliber of friendship that individuals would normally have with those they knew and met in real life.

Rees, Shelley S. "Gender and Desire in Thomas Lovell Beddoes' The Brides' Tragedy and Death's Jest-Book". Thesis, University of North Texas, 2002. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc3078/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Thomas Lovell Beddoes' female dramatic characters are, for the most part, objectified and static, but these passive women perform a crucial narrative and thematic function in the plays. Alongside the destructive activity of the male characters, they dramatize masculine-feminine unions as idealized and contrived and, thus, unstable. Desire, power and influence, as well as the constrictive aspects of physicality, all become gendered concepts in Beddoes' plays, and socially normative relationships between men and women, including heterosexual courtship and marriage, are scrutinized and found wanting. In The Brides' Tragedy, Floribel and Olivia, the eponymous brides, represent archetypes of innocence, purity, and Romantic nature. Their bridegroom, Hesperus, embodies Romantic masculinity, desiring the feminine and aspiring to androgyny, but ultimately unable to relinquish masculine power. The consequences of Hesperus' attempts to unite with the feminine other are the destruction of that other and of himself, with no hope for the spiritual union in death that the Romantic Hesperus espouses as his ultimate desire. Death's Jest-Book expands upon the theme of male-female incompatibility, presenting heterosexual relationships in the context of triangulated desire. The erotic triangles created by Melveric, Sibylla, and Wolfram and Athulf, Amala, and Adalmar are inherently unstable, because they depend upon the rivalries between the males. Once those rivalries end, with the deaths of Wolfram and Athulf, respectively, Sibylla and Amala fade into nothing, their function as conduits for male homosocial relations at an end. In effect, these failed heterosexual triangles function as a backdrop for the idealized relationship between Melveric and Wolfram, whose desire for each other is mediated through their common pursuit of Sibylla, as well as through their blood-brotherhood. Once Wolfram's physical masculinity is deferred through death, the mixing of his ashes with those of Melveric's dead wife, and reanimation, Melveric and Wolfram descend into the tomb together, united for eternity.

Visick, Amanda. "Mothering by the book : constructions of mature student mothers' identities in the context of mothering and study practices and mother/child relationships". Thesis, University of Bedfordshire, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10547/134972.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This project investigates the development of mature student mothers’ identities in the dual contexts of constructions of the women’s at-home study practices and of their ‘responsibilities’ for their children’s development. Interviews were conducted with 23 women – all ‘new university’ students – and with their schoolaged children. I used discourse analysis focussing on language as performative and constitutive in order to understand positioning of, and by the women. I also drew upon critical developmental psychological theory and the concepts of discourse, intersubjectivity and dialogicality as epistemological resources in order to understand the women’s and children’s accounts. The methodology yielded a diversity of constructions of the women, these drawing upon a variety of discourses. The first empirical chapter addresses constructions of mature student mothers, the second, constructions of child development and the third, constructions of ‘influence’. The organisation of the empirical chapters reflects not only the importance I accorded to particular themes, but also the idea that separating mothers’ concerns and those of their children can be less fruitful in examinations of identity construction than addressing these together. The key issues that are a thread connecting the empirical chapters are time (requiring ‘balancing’ of social positions); change (in mothering practices and confidence); perceived ‘influence’ on children’s development, and relationships (including the ways in which identities are constructed in the ‘space in the middle’). Participants addressed these issues in different ways with some women positioning not spending ‘quality’ time with their children as meeting children’s developmental needs (addressed in Chapter Seven). Other important themes were mothering constructed as mundane and undervalued (in Chapter Five), children’s constructions of ‘roles’ as helpers (in Chapter Six) and perceived intersubjectivity in mother/child interactions (examined in Chapter Seven). In the concluding chapter I discuss the implications of the findings in terms of the contribution of the research to theoretical debates about motherhood, mothering and child development. I also reflect on my position as a mature student mother, examining my involvement in the research process and finally, suggest applications for the findings reported in the thesis.

Abstract (sommario):
The relationships between different types of adult-support inferential book reading strategies and young children’s language and literacy competence were examined in 18 studies that included 1134 study participants. van Kleeck’s (2006) descriptions of two levels of inferencing and different types of inferential strategies at each level were used to code and analyze the patterns of correlations between the book reading strategies and the child outcomes. Results showed that parents’ and teachers’ use of different types of inferencing strategies were related to variations in the child outcomes, and that the effects of inferencing were conditioned on the children’s ages. Implications for practice are described.

Although there are theoretical and empirical research on modular consortium, studies on the relationship between modulists, the flow of information and the Interorganizational Cost Management (IOCM) in modular consortium arrangements are embryonic. The modular consortium and IOCM induce companies to overcome organizational boundaries in order to allow the entire value chain becomes more efficient. This thesis, configured how a Case Study with Embedded Objects, defends the possibility of accepting that the association between modular consortium and IOCM promotes mutual learning and further reducing overall operating costs in the automotive value chain, rather than taken alone. It is understood that the approaches adopted by the modular consortium in Resende (modularization and IOCM) are complementary and include several common factors, such as the sharing of R&D projects, meshing of its employees in other companies, integrated information systems, knowledge transfer as well as the need to develop a more efficient inter management. In this context, modular consortium is on a facilitator of the IOCM process because the allowable cost of the components is defined by inter-working teams, which include product design, engineering, procurement and production engineering. Thus, companies have shown a high interdependent relationship. But it is evident that not always, the benefits are shared between all the actors involved, due to the asymmetry of power between MAN and modulists. Regarding the exchange of the findings indicate a strong occurrence cost information of this initiative, but only the modulists for MAN. The empirical evidence obtained in this study denote the use of power by MAN to its modulists. The use of power may favor disclosure by modulists cost data, but this does not guarantee the success of IOCM in all its fullness. This is a limitation to the applicability of IOCM through open book accounting.

Larsson, Carl. "Nothing to Do with Us? : Making Sense of Global Wealth Inequality". Thesis, Linnéuniversitetet, Institutionen för design (DE), 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:lnu:diva-96654.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This design project takes the form of an illustrated story told from the perspective of a young adult middle-class Swede who feels uncertainty in the face of larger issues in the world. Where do all our stuff come from? Is he buying unethical products? Is he actively making a situation worse elsewhere through his choices? How would you even know, when the consequences of such actions might only become evident far, far away from Sweden? How do you relate to this? What should you do? As the protagonist wants for answers, he decides to try and find out what the situation is really like, and what could be done about it. But, as he would soon find out, the answer is not a simple one… In this work-in-progress story, a middle-class Swede must contend with the fact that he’s part of a subset of humanity that in large part benefits off of the thankless work that may be found in the so-called Global South. In his investigation, he seeks to find answers to important questions. What’s the nature of this economic relationship between the Global South and the Global North? Is it really enough to buy ‘more sustainable’ products to relieve the impact on environments and societies? What are the hidden perspectives and stories that those in the Global South experience every day? How can one try to be a good person and create positive change in the world when faced with overwhelming systemic issues on a global scale? Through the story, the nature of global wealth disparity is illuminated as the Swede tries to make sense of global power relationships in relation to labor and production, and so too offers a reader who may be having similar worries an opportunity to learn. As uncomfortable truths are revealed, a greater systemic issue becomes evident. As economic growth takes precedence over social and environmental wellbeing, who wins and who loses – and where? This is the written thesis section of the project, which seeks to elaborate on the different concepts included in the story, as well as surrounding it. Aspects such as the purpose of the project and target audience are gone over, emphasizing the need to communicate complex subjects to wider audiences while avoiding the act of oversimplification of the issues presented. The methodology of the work is presented, and aspects of the design process are documented. The project cumulates into a digital exhibition with other design students, where a work-in-progress version of the comic book is presented digitally for reading. The end of the thesis features a reflection of the result and the design process in order to identify where improvements could be made, as well as the answers the author of this thesis found in relation to the project questions. In summary, there seem to be an indication that working collectively as opposed to individually may be more effective towards creating positive change, in opposition to individual-focused solutions. Finding appropriate solutions to issues may not have to be found immediately, but may be found through a process affected by several different people in a collective that are able to contribute with their differing skills and knowledge to locate the most appropriate path forward.

Allen, Rebecca J. "Selection of memory book content: Agreement in content as a function of informant relationship to memory book recipient". Scholar Commons, 2017. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/6795.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This study was designed to determine to what extent provision of personally relevant information and sensory cues would agree between Recipient and Informant for selection of memory book content. Six dyads married to each other an average of 29.17 years (SD = 10.03), between the ages of 43 and 70 years (Mean = 57; SD = 8.39), and cognitively competent (i.e., no diagnosis of cognitive impairment) participated. Participants completed questionnaires independently and provided personally relevant information/memories, aversions towards select memories/topics, and sensory cues on behalf of themselves (as “Recipient) and their spouse (as “Informant”). For provision of personally relevant information/memories, Informant and Recipient was 44.58% in agreement (SD = 14.99). For provision of aversions towards select memories/topics, Informant and Recipient was 24.86% in agreement (SD = 30.81). For provision of sensory cues, Informant and Recipient was 19.6% in agreement (SD = 30.81). Findings suggest that memory books made by others may not include the most important memories of the Recipient, thereby limiting the effectiveness of the memory book. Therefore, efforts should be made to encourage individuals to create a memory book while cognitively competent or share their most meaningful memories with the person who is most likely to make them a memory book if they should need one in the future.

Kim, Jieun. "The relationship between temple and agriculture in the Book of Haggai". Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/17895.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis examines the relationship between the Jerusalem temple rebuilding and agriculture in the Book of Haggai. The Hebrew text is replete with agricultural terminology. However, very few have seen that this terminology is central to understanding Haggai’s promulgation that the temple must be rebuilt. In Haggai, agriculture provides crucial insights into Judean agricultural economy within the context of the Achaemenid Empire. This study also throws light upon the importance of agriculture as an economic factor in 6th century BCE Judah. In chapter 1, I situate my research within current critical work on Haggai. I show how earlier research primarily has concentrated on the “independent” sub-province of Judah without attempting to understand the Book of Haggai within the political and economic context of Achaemenid Judah. I also discuss methodology. Chapters 2 and 3 give overviews of the pertinent agricultural background for my study. In chapter 2, I survey agricultural developments in ancient Israel and in the ancient Near East. Archaeological excavations and surveys have revealed a considerable agricultural material culture in Judah. The archaeological record shows that olive and vine production was of great economic value in ancient Israel. The olive and the vine belonged among the most important agricultural products, highly sought after all over the ancient Near East. In chapter 3, I discuss Achaemenid imperial administration and economy under Darius. My claim is that Darius’s imperial policy was the same for all the different parts of the empire. Subsequently, I show how Judah constituted a vital part of the larger economic structure of the Achaemenid Empire. In chapter 4, I demonstrate how Judah, together with numerous other subordinate provinces, contributed to the economy of the Mesopotamian Empires. From an imperial, military, and economic point of view, Judah functioned as a buffer zone between the Mesopotamian Empires and Egypt. Accordingly, my interest is in the Judean political and economic situation in the early period of Darius, as described in the book of Haggai itself. Following the introductory chapters, chapters 5 and 6 provide an exegesis of the Book of Haggai. The purpose of my exegetical work is to demonstrate the relevance of agriculture for the Jerusalem temple rebuilding. Attention is particularly paid to terms like “drought” or “desolate” (Hag 1:4, 9, 11), “time” (Hag 1: 2, 4), “house” (Hag 1:2, 4, 8, 9; 2:3, 7, 8, 9, 15, 18), and “build” (Hag 1:2, 8; Hag 2:18). Chapter 7 contains the conclusion of the dissertation. Summing up, this thesis shows the importance of a prosperous temple economy in Jerusalem for all of Judah. Darius wanted to maximise the economic contribution of Judah. However, in his second year (520 BCE), the Judean agricultural economy was depressed because of drought, crop diseases, blight, mildew, and hail (Hag 1:5–6, 9–11, 2:16– 18). For this reason, Haggai encouraged the Judean people strongly to restore the Jerusalem temple. This would be the only possibility to expand the agricultural industry (Hag 1:7–8; 2:3, 8– 9). However, the temple still remained in a bad state (Hag 1:4; 2:3). Instead, the people wanted to rebuild the Davidic dynasty through Zerubbabel (Hag 1:4, 9; 2:4, 5–6). The Judean preference for the Davidic dynasty caused the end of Zerubbabel (Hag 2:20–23).

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Studies of the value relevance of accounting number in capital market research are consistent with the simple view that, in equilibrium, book values are equal to or have some long-term relationship with market values, and that market returns are related to book returns. This dissertation examines the value relevance of annually-reported book values of net assets, earnings and dividends to the year-end market values of five Japanese firms between 1950 and 2004 (a period of 54 years). Econometric techniques are used to develop dynamic models of the relationship between markets, book values and a number of macro-economic variables. In constructing the models, the focus is to provide an accurate statistical description of the underlying relationships between market and book value. It is expected that such research will add to the body of knowledge on factors that are influential to Japanese stock prices. The significant findings of the study are as follows: 1) well-specified models of the data generating process for market value based on the information set used to derive the models are log-linear in form. Additive, linear models in untransformed variables are not well-specified and forecast badly out of sample; 2) the book value of net assets has relevance for market value in the five Japanese firms examined, in the long run.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
"Are the Letters of Horace Satires?" (Hendrickson 1897: 313). In response to this question, this thesis investigates whether Horace's Sermones and Epistulae 1 all belong to the genre of satura. Ancient and modern evidence from the use of the terms Sermones, Epistulae, and satura, is surveyed, and is found to be inconclusive, but not to preclude Epist. 1 as satura. The nature of specifically Horatian satura is ascertained from the text of Serm. 1, especially Serm. 1.1 and the explicitly literary Serm. 1.4 and 1.10. The redefinition of Lucilian satura, and its political implications are also considered. To confirm Epist. 1 as satura a sequential reading of the three libelli is undertaken, tracing the evolution of the theme of locus: place, both as geographical location, and as status, place in the social hierarchy, in the context of the socio-political environment of the time of composition. Serm. 1.1 as a programmatic poem is shown to establish Epicurean moderation as a prerequisite for a vita beata. In Serm. 1 Horace's status as client-poet of Maecenas and Octavian initially permits this ideal lifestyle in the Urbs. The misperceptions of outsiders lead to a preference for a life of Epicurean quietude in the rus in Serm. 2, although Horace's aequanimitas is disturbed by urban officia, and abuse of libertas dicendi associated particularly with Stoicism. The ideal of rural withdrawal is reinforced in Epist. 1 through an exploration of appropriate behaviour in relationships with potentes amici. Horace's addressees cover the entire range of the social hierarchy, and in his letters he utilizes the arguments of moral philosophy, thus reconciling poetry and philosophy. He achieves a pragmatic compromise whereby he can enjoy libertas in his role as a poet, while acknowledging that personal libertas and true aequanimitas are still to be attained.

Abstract (sommario):
In this paper we examine the short and long-term relations between stock price, book value and residual income.  We employ a panel error correction model, estimated with Engle & Granger’s (1987) two-step procedure and the single equation methodology. The models are estimated with FE-OLS and the MG-estimator. We find that stock prices adjust previous periods equilibrium error. Further, we find that book value has short and long-term effects on stock prices. Finally, this paper finds mixed results regarding residual incomes impact on stock prices. The MG-estimator finds evidence for a short-term relationship, while the FE-OLS provides insignificant or weak support for short-term effects. FE-OLS and MG-estimator find insignificant or weak support regarding residual incomes long-term effects.

Abstract (sommario):
Objective: Intellectual capital is a strategic resource that plays an important role in the value creation process. Taking into account that the twentieth century is a century of ideas, knowledge, innovations, information and changes, intellectual capital has been an interesting topic over the past few decades. At the same time, the financial market has become influential in the global market, so intellectual capital found a very important role for itself. Most of the research is aimed at identifying the relation between intellectual capital and short-term financial performance, such as profits, market shares, turnovers, or market value. This research aims to fill the gap in the literature that relates to the total book value as a final performance. By improving the total book value of a company and creating new assets through the capitalization of investments in intellectual capital components, a company generates benefits on a long-term basis. Methodology: We included 498 and 475 French companies in a complex correlation statistical analysis in two main research models respectively. The financial information was obtained from the financial database “Point Risk” for the purpose of addressing the main research question. The model used in the study is the Intellectual Capital Transformation Evaluating Model (ICTEM) developed by Molodchik et al. (2012). This model investigates the process of intellectual capital transformation in the performance of a company.Findings: Companies transform and capitalize their investments in intellectual capital components into concrete assets in the total book value. The three main intellectual capital components that companies invest in are: human capital, organizational capital and relational capital. Implications and limitations: The main contribution of our research is the identification of the link between investments in intellectual capital components and a company’s total book value as final performance. Until now, the total book value as company final performance has not been used in correlation with intellectual capital and its investments. There are limitations of the study. One of them is to find adequate financial information about companies that will be used in an analysis and another one is financial information, such as marketing expenses and R&D expenses, which is not always available in the accounts of a company. Original feature: This study presents the first verification of a positive relationship between investments in intellectual capital components and a company’s total book value

Abstract (sommario):

This essay aims to explore the relationship between literature and film in education. A study was performed with upper secondary school students to determine their attitudes towards the two media and investigate if there were any differences in their reception of them. The results show that the students were generally more positive to films, found them easier to understand and were more able to answer closed, information-seeking questions about scenes from films than excerpts from texts. However, when it came to open questions, asking the students to reason for themselves, texts proved to provide a better basis. These results are discussed using literacy theory and the conclusion is that films can be a useful complement when teaching literature in school.

Voravickositt, Preeyanuch. "Understanding the relationship between users' reading attitudes and behaviours, and e-book collection management in Thai academic libraries". Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2017. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/19055/.

Abstract (sommario):
Electronic books (e-books) have become another option for reading and have gained in popularity in the last five years, especially for fiction. In the academic community, however, e-books have not seen the same success in terms of usage and acceptance. Further research is required to find out why this is the case among academic users. In addition to user-focused studies, e-book management strategies in libraries is another important point for investigation. These two aspects of e-books need to be examined in parallel because users and library staff are the main stakeholders in the academic community. There are few studies regarding e-book usage and acceptance, with all the studies carried out thus far having been conducted only in developed countries such as the US or UK. This research topic has rarely been considered in developing countries such as Thailand. This study aims to understand how Thai academic libraries manage their e-book collection and how these management approaches relate to attitudes and behaviours concerning e-books among library users. An exploratory sequential mixed methods approach was used to explore the relationship between academic libraries’ management of e-books and students’ reading attitudes and behaviours. The study is separated into three phases: the first phase is concerned with the management of e-books in Thai academic libraries and the second phase explores library users’ attitudes to e-books. In addition, the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) was adopted as a theoretical framework to identify the factors influencing the use and acceptance of e-books among Thai library users. The final phase concludes with an adaptation of Keller’s model to conduct an in-depth investigation into library users’ reading behaviours. In Phase 1, approaches to e-book collection management were examined through qualitative interviews with academic librarians from nine university libraries in Thailand. In Phase 2, a questionnaire was used to explore the attitudes of students to print and electronic books, together with the students’ views on e-book provision in their libraries. The elements in the UTUAT model were used to construct the survey items. In Phase 3, library users’ reading behaviours were explored using photo-diaries and interviews, allowing the researcher to gain a rich picture of users’ reading behaviours as part of their daily routines. Finding from the three phases revealed the key factors affecting the relationship between academic librarians and library users regarding e-books management and use. Library organisational structure, budget constraint, attitude of librarians and users toward each other, user reading habit, and educational system were found to have an effect between the two sets of stakeholder. This study makes a major contribution to knowledge on the area of e-book management in academic libraries. It is also a pioneer work in developing an understanding of the relationship between academic librarians and users with regards to the e-book management and use in the context of Thai academic libraries with a combination of the two theoretical frameworks (UTAUT and Keller’s model). The study’s goal is to provide a better understanding of e-books in the Thai academic context and to help academic librarians to understand user needs and behaviours, which will assist them in developing effective e-book collection management strategies and policies that are compatible with user requirements.

Abstract (sommario):
The Theological Relationship Between the Book of Proverbs and Genesis to Kings. By utilizing an intertextual approach that makes use of allusion and typology, this thesis examines how wisdom’s link to creation, as found in the prologue to Proverbs, is paralleled in the salvation historical material of Genesis to Kings. The thesis explores the relationship between the themes of wisdom, creation, building, and provisioning, as understood against the conceptual worldview of the ancient Near East and Israel. In so doing, it becomes clear that the prologue to Proverbs roots human house building and other cultural activities in the divine patterning of creation (cf. Prov. 3:19-20; 24:3-4). The same pattern occurs with respect to wise tabernacle and temple building in Genesis to Kings (cf. Exod. 31:3; 1 Kgs. 7:14).

This study investigated an application of picture books to reading instruction. Picture books with a theme of interpersonal relationships and various story reading models were used for picture book reading instruction. The experimental instruction, which spanned 12 weeks, consisted of three main units, including “make friends and build relationships”, “control emotions and resolve arguments”, “offer care and maintain friendship”. This reading instruction was expected to help increase students’ ability to develop and maintain interpersonal relationships. Based on the action research approach, fifth-grade students studying in the school where the researcher worked for were provided a series of courses and activities related to development of friendships. Research data were collected from observation, interview, discussion, learning sheets, and teacher reflections. The effects of the instruction were assessed through students’ self-evaluation, classroom observation, inter-evaluation, interpersonal relationship evaluation, and questionnaire. The results of this study were divided into two aspects: 1.In the aspect of interpersonal relationships: (1)Picture book reading instruction could improve students’ interpersonal relationships. (2)Interpersonal relationships had to be formed through practices and interactions. (3)A good interpersonal relationship could prevent relational bullying. 2.In the aspect of instruction: (1)A variety of models of story reading could be applied. (2)Story-telling instruction could be offered in diverse ways. (3)Picture books were helpful during promotion of reading instruction.

The library catalogue is the most important tool to bridge a library’s collection and its users. Nowadays, users are often faced with the problem of information overload and find it difficult to search for relevant and useful information. Thus, how to provide a better platform and mechanism to enhance users’ searching experiences has become a very important issue. One of the possible directions is to improve the way that search results are displayed. Traditionally, libraries prefer to catalog each book as an individual bibliographic entity. This practice will not be able to collocate related works properly. Moreover, people are getting used to the search interface provided by Google or Amazon.com, this change makes the aforementioned practice a more critical issue. Amazon.com is the first and the most successful Internet bookstore. Amazon.com employs some means to keep the visitors continually browsing its products. One of its mechanisms is to create a lot of linkages among its products to encourage its visitors to keep clicking on them. The goal of Amazon.com is to sell more of its products. Similarly, the library wants to increase and facilitate the use of its collection as well. This functional similarity suggests that the library professionals should understand and learn how Amazon.com provides links and how they work. This study, thus, aims to explore the linking relationships and linkage types presented in the book search results of Amazon.com. Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet was chosen as the target work because it is a classic and has many different versions and various formats. The complication of its publishing status is useful in helping us get an overall picture of Amazon.com’s link relationships. The investigation was divided into two stages. First, a search for Romeo and Juliet was conducted on Amazon.com, and the first 100 titles of the search results were selected for further analysis. The reason why the first 100 titles were selected is because most people would not examine more than 100 records during a search session (Wiberley, Daugherty, & Danowski, 1995). The results of the first stage analysis reveal that nine types of linking relationship are found in the first 100 titles. These are equivalence relationships, derivation relationships, descriptive relationships, content relationships, accompanying relationships, whole-part relationships, responsibility relationships, subject relationships, and title relationships. In the second stage, five titles were purposively selected from the first 100 titles examined in the first stage. These five titles represent the following selection criteria: a version of Romeo and Juliet, a descriptive work of Romeo and Juliet, an adaption of Romeo and Juliet, a translation of Romeo and Juliet, and a version of Romeo and Juliet in different media. The results show that there are 13 types of linking relationships found in the Web pages of these five titles. These relationships comprise of equivalence relationships, derivation relationships, responsibility relationships, subject relationships, items viewed by the same customer relationships, link by system analysis or suggestion relationships, items bought by the same customer relationships, customer review relationships, the same booklist relationships, the same customer tags relationships, link by system advertisement relationships, citation relationships, and the same key phrases relationships. The last 9 kinds of relationships are different from the traditional bibliographic relationships. These linkage relationships are based upon two factors: the relationship is either linked by customers or connected by the system. These relationships can be viewed as shared characteristics relationships as well. Based on the findings, the researcher then proposes the following suggestions. First, in Amazon.com, the page of each book record comprises of various information blocks. The contents of these information blocks will vary according to user’s browsing movements. In other words, the contents are based on user’s interests and the purpose is to attain the user’s attention. It means that the display of library OPACs could be more targeted toward the users. Second, in Amazon.com, an item might repetitively appear in different information blocks. The purpose is to increase the linkage to the item and enhance the visibility of the item. If we believe that every book has its reader, we should take this approach into consideration when designing an OPAC. Finally, more and more catalog user studies report that users prefer one-stop-shopping system. Amazon.com may not be an ideal information model to satisfy the needs. However, it does demonstrate a model which is focused on attracting and attaining its visitors. From the perspective of bibliographic relationships, it does employ many linking mechanisms that have been neglected by the library professionals. We definitely can learn something from Amazon.com to improve our OPAC systems.

E-book has become the most popular topic in the publishing industry since the 90s. As digital reading is widely accepted today, books can be ready not only with printed media, but also with high-tech products like e-book reader or portable devices. While the behavior of reading changes, so does the reading media. The momentum of such change will reinforce the emergence of relevant industries and lead to the next digital revolution. Questionnaire as a method of survey is applied in this study to analyze the reading behaviors of Taiwanese e-book users in relation to Demographic Variables and Life Style. A total of 365 questionnaires are collected for empirical analysis with statistical tools of Descriptive Statistics, Factor Analysis, Reliability & Validity Analysis, Cluster Analysis and Chi-square Test. The study explores the reading behavior and preferences of e-book readers in order to provide marketing advices for current and potential businesses. Based on the research result, e-readers are mostly aged between 30 and 39 years old and are office workers inhabit in northern Taiwan. By using cluster analysis, e-readers in Taiwan can be divided into two groups based on their lifestyle, one is the trend-information receiver and the other is the traditional-information receiver. There is also a significant difference of reading behaviors between gender and e-readers who use different internet ready devices. This indicates that e-reading behavior is influenced by each user’s personality, and the time spends on reading is different across people with different lifestyle. The conclusion and suggestions for e-books are made in light of three aspects shown below. 1. With the understanding that reading behavior is influenced by Demographic Variables, it is advised that differentiated service and marketing shall be carried toward different gender. 2. With properly segmented groups of lifestyle, it is advised that e-books shall be developed in a more innovative way, and a niche business model shall be created as well. 3. The connection between reading behavior and lifestyle shall be utilized to overcome the problem of incompatibility across devices in order to develop a standard e-book format. Furthermore, with the help of today’s cloud service, reading seamlessly across devices and platforms shall be achieved.

Abstract (sommario):
M.A.
In this dissertation I aim to establish how Ovid uses the Rape of the Sabine Women, part of the foundation myth of Rome, in the Ars Amatoria I: 101-134 to maintain or restructure male-female relationships within Roman patriarchal society. Furthermore, Ovid's legacy in the Middle Ages and our modem society is briefly looked at. This myth tells that Romulus and his men had a shortage of women in their city as they were not considered suitable husbands by the men of the surrounding tribes. In response to the ridicule of their neighbours, Romulus held a celebration of the Consualia at which he and his men seized the Sabine maidens, who would later become their wives. A semiotic approach is used to understand how Ovid viewed existing male-female relationships and to what end he would like to restructure them. Ovid understood the strength of this myth and retold it in order to persuade his audience of his argument. In these lines Ovid explained to the student-lover how and why to meet a woman at the Theatre. Through the comparison of the ancient and the contemporary, his use of certain words and figures of speech, Ovid attempted to convince his audience of the effectiveness of the art of love he promoted: a contract of agreement between two willing partners created by persuasion rather than force. He displayed an amazing understanding of the human psyche, as well as the violent, angry nature of rape. Ovid's novel approach has affected authors of the Middle Ages, among them Geoffrey Chaucer, artists of the 'heroic rape' genre and can even be discussed in relation to modem rape myths and the modern concept of equity between the sexes introduced in the Ars already. His style and subject matter has caused the analysis of his work to be highly debated among many modem scholars. It is my conclusion that Ovid wrote the Ars Amatoria with the intention of restructuring male-female relationships in Roman society, promoting a movement away from violence and unfulfilling relationships, typical of the Roman marriage tradition. His work was so far reaching that he did not only create a stir among his contemporaries, but instead he influenced the development of the male-female relationship and interaction over centuries.
