Abstract (sommario):
The objective of this creative project is to develop a series of paintings in oil on canvas that focus on the issue of mankind's crumbling relationship with the natural world. The paintings will be produced through a process that begins with an intuitive abstract approach and will later develop layered representational imagery. My technique of painting involves initially choosing and mixing colors without regard to the finished painting, allowing the subconscious to determine the direction that the painting will take. Upon completion of the under painting, I begin creating stencils and layering imagery that provoke thought concerning nature and our place in it. This collection of paintings is representative of the process I have developed through a wide variety of influences, and is a means of communicating my concern for the ever dwindling natural environment and our connection to it.

Abstract (sommario):
In a world with increasing cultural diversity, it is necessary to understand the different environmental mindsets and natural encounters created by local governments. As the population transforms, integration endeavors are susceptible to be influenced by biased perceptions of immigrants thereby affecting people’s relationship with nature in the city. Örebro is a city in Sweden that has a high focus on environmental management. It is for this reason that elite interviews of local public officials and the analysis of environmental documents have been conducted to investigate this phenomenon. Currently, the framings found portray immigrants as uneducated, fearful, vulnerable, and their use of nature is often described as ‘deviant’. Swedes, on the other hand, are framed as educated, confident, and comfortable in their experience of the city and its nature. The interviews and documents show that the city has ambitious environmental goals in which the Municipality attempts to reduce social differences. However, it continues to develop plans based on erroneous perceptions of both Immigrants and Swedes leading to a possible increase in the power gap between these groups. Additionally, it leads the Municipality to work on the basis of an unsubstantial amalgamation of immigrant groups rather than considering the differences within these.

Abstract (sommario):
Nature has been shown to be beneficial for numerous individual outcomes and this article investigates the link between of individual's nature recreation and couples' relationship satisfaction. First, we outline the theoretical underpinnings of nature recreation and couples' relationship satisfaction. Then we examine the following hypotheses: (1) nature recreation has a positive direct effect on relationship satisfaction, (2) there is a positive indirect effect of nature recreation on relationship satisfaction through the environmental effects, and (3) the relationship between nature recreation and relationship satisfaction will be moderated by the recreational factors. These were examined using data obtained from a cross sectional MTurk survey from a diverse group of 520 participants. Structural Equation Modeling was used to analyze the hypotheses. The results showed that the hypotheses 2 and 3 were non-significant but that the indirect effect was significant. These findings were explored, possible explanations for these findings discussed, and future implications were outlined.

Abstract (sommario):

Decision making with the help of graphs has been applied for a long time. Previous to the introduction of computerized solutions, graphs and complementary pictures were hand drawn. With the introduction of computers came the colored and dynamic “animations” called simulations which are used today. The focal company of this study, Ångpanneföreningen AB, has during an extensive period of time constructed simulations of complex systems which they have used in order to satisfy specific needs of their customers in different areas. Depending on the complexity of the product and the needs it is ought to fulfill, the exchange of it will have a direct impact on the interactions carried out between the buying and selling parties in various ways. A question that this thesis looked to answer was how the utilization of simulations affects Ångpanneföreningen AB’s relationship with its customers. The purpose of this study is to describe how the use of a simulation program may affect the relation between two parties in a business relationship. A case study approach based on focused and semi-structural interviews has been used for this study. The effects of the use of simulations on a business relationship, in terms of benefits perceived, depend on the purpose set for the software. This meaning that it depends on whether the results and benefits are of such kind that they are possible to measure. However, if measurable, then the awareness of perceived benefits contributes to a stronger relationship since trust is likely to follow from met expectations. The simulation software offered by ÅF has the characteristics of both a product and a service with a highly technological nature. When dealing with simulations holding such attributes, a high level of exchanges is likely to be involved. Furthermore, interdependencies between two parties in a business relationship tend to develop as both the exchanges due to, and the complexities of, the simulation are of a high level, meaning that exchanges are needed in both directions.

Carroll, Rachel Art College of Fine Arts UNSW. "What kind of relationship with nature does art provide?" Awarded by:University of New South Wales. Art, 2007. http://handle.unsw.edu.au/1959.4/43308.

Abstract (sommario):
The relationship with nature through art has been explored as a two fold bond. The first considers a relationship with nature via art and science, where the history and contemporary application of scientific illustration in art is explored; while the second explores past and present connections with nature via art and the landscape, particularly the panoramic tradition. Historically these relationships have predominately been about dominating nature, mans dominion over the land. Science was seen as the only authority, while our relationships with the land in art, positioned the viewer at a commanding distance above and over the land, as seen in the post colonial panoramic tradition. In contrast, -The Coorong Series- explores a lived history with nature rather than the historical role of dominance. -The Coorong Series" explores a relationship of knowledge, understanding, and the experience of nature; through two parts. The first combines art and science in -The Coorong Specimen Series', to explore the facts and knowledge that science has provided about certain plants, birds and marine life from the Coorong. Inspiration has been derived from 19thC scientific illustrations and the lyrical prints of the Coorong by Australian Artist John Olsen. Part two explores the immersive experience of the iconic landscape in ???The Coorong Landscape Series" providing a relationship that seeks to understand the functionality of the location and to celebrate the unique beauty of this diverse region. Inspiration has been gained from the landscapes by l8th and 19th C artists John Constable and Claude Monet, along with landscapes by contemporary artists, John Walker and Mandy Martin. Through aesthetic notions such as scientific illustration, panoramic landscape, immersive scale, the collection of work, an expressionistic use of paint, and labeling of each piece like a museum display. -The Coorong landscape series" provides an exploration of a region that immerses the viewer in an experience of the location. The series portrays a relationship with nature through art that educates the viewer about The Coorong region. Connections are made between the land, birds, plants, fish, and human interaction; which results in an ecological consideration of the Coorong. Ultimately it is the educational experience that art provides allowing the viewer to explore a plethora of relationships within nature, and to explore how these relationships have changed or continue to exist within this era.

Pepping, Christopher Andrew George. "The Nature of the Relationship between Attachment and Mindfulness". Thesis, Griffith University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/367783.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Recent evidence suggests that attachment and mindfulness are related, such that individuals with a secure attachment style also tend to be more mindful. However, the nature of this relationship is unclear. The present program of research presents seven studies that examined the nature of the relationship between adult attachment and mindfulness. Study 1 aimed to replicate the established association between attachment and mindfulness, and to extend these findings by examining a possible differential relationship between the two variables in experienced and inexperienced mindfulness meditators. Results revealed that attachment and mindfulness were significantly related in both groups. However, attachment anxiety and avoidance together accounted for more than twice the variance in mindfulness in experienced meditators compared to their inexperienced counterparts. Further, mindfulness experience moderated the association between attachment anxiety and mindfulness. Following this, four experiments examined a possible bi-directional causal relationship between attachment and mindfulness. Studies 2 and 3 investigated the effects of enhancing mindfulness on state attachment, and Studies 4 and 5 investigated the effects of attachment security priming on state mindfulness. In both Studies 2 and 3, mindfulness was successfully enhanced; however, this did not lead to any change in state attachment. In Studies 4 and 5, attachment security increased, but there were no changes in state mindfulness. These findings suggest that the two variables share their association not because there is a direct, immediate causal relationship between them, but rather because they may be related more distally and indirectly, or may share a common precursor.

Thompson, Faye E. "The ethical nature of the mother-midwife relationship: a feminist perspective". University of Southern Queensland, Faculty of Sciences, 2001. http://eprints.usq.edu.au/archive/00001517/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This research explored the ethical nature of the mother-midwife relationship in order to refine our understanding of the place of ethics in the context of everyday midwifery practice – the practice of ‘being with woman’ in childbirth. The ethics explicitly available to midwives are derived from practices such as moral philosophy and bioethics, whose ethical frameworks are reductionist in their exclusion of context and relationship. Given that the midwifery profession is currently promoting a model of practice built on partnership and relationship, existing codes and frameworks are examined for their adequacy. An assumption of the study was that a distinctive midwifery ethic was implicitly available in the lived realities and shared engagement of mothers and midwives, embedded in practice. Conceptual theoretical research methodology facilitated exploration of the taken-for-granted assumptions of established theory, official policies such as Codes, and the profession’s literature. Feminist-constructivist theory formed the epistemological basis for gaining insight into the implicit ethics of midwifery. Personal narratives of mothers and midwives were analysed and interpreted for meaning, and transcripts returned to participants for validation. These constructed meanings were then compared and contrasted with those explicit in Codes and current literature. The central theme to emerge from the narratives was the use and abuse of power in relationships. Other major themes were institutional dominance consistently used to describe the status quo, values conflict especially linked to workplace/service provider versus personal/professional midwifery ethics, and the ethical adequacy of a ‘being with woman’ relationship. Findings indicate that midwifery does need a different ethic to that of bioethics and problem-solving principlism, and that such a new ethic would look like those promoted by feminist-virtue ethics. The latter not only redress the politics of the existing hegemonic maternity services system, but they also place women’s concerns central to practice and deliberation. The aspirations, values and lived reality of mothers and midwives, and the commitment of the professional-friend midwife to the particularity of the birthing woman, are the focus of a reconstructed ethic for midwifery practice, an ethic which reunites morality and personal interest. Implications and recommendations are discussed.

Abstract (sommario):
Human-nature connection is essential to wellness and especially important in the built environment context. This research investigates the lived experience of significant nature experiences in remote natural landscapes to unveil essential elements that can be integrated into biophilic urban design philosophy. In-depth interviews and phenomenological analysis explored the lived experiences of people in programs conducted in remote natural landscapes. Three emergent themes characterized significant nature experiences: attuning to interconnectedness with nature, moving through changing human perspectives, and experiencing restoration through attuning with nature. The findings are relevant to urban planning because to some degree human health is dependent on sensory input that features elements of the natural world.

Hayes, Tracy. "Making sense of nature : a creative exploration of young people's relationship with the natural environment". Thesis, University of Cumbria, 2018. http://insight.cumbria.ac.uk/id/eprint/3732/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Can you imagine a world where no-one goes outside? Our world is under threat from human activities, from what we do, and the way we do it. This will have a huge impact on our future lives, and we need to think about how we protect places and the people, animals and plants found there. Whilst, there is a widely-recognised need to address this threat, there is a specific focus on how we can involve young people in this process. Within this, there is additional concern about how little time children and young people spend outside. My qualitative study responds to these concerns by exploring young people’s relationship with nature, and how this may be developed through the projects we offer them. The participating projects have been spread across England, from south-east to north-west, including rural, coastal and urban environments. The young people, aged between 11 and 25, were from diverse backgrounds, with a wide range of individual needs. This transdisciplinary research has used an innovative blended methodology, combining hermeneutics, (auto)ethnography and action research (HEAR) to explore the topic. I have been creative in my approach, preferring everyday language and making use of stories. I have listened to and observed people’s stories, and created new stories based on these experiences. My work emphasises the importance of communication, how we talk to and with people, and how we talk about the natural environment. Contributions to practice include the development of a new toolkit providing guidance for practitioners on how to work effectively outdoors, with young people identified as having special educational needs and/or disabilities. Contributions to knowledge include a new conceptualisation of the different forms of story, and a new methodological approach (HEAR) to explore outdoor learning experiences. These outcomes are founded in young peoples’ perspectives and grounded in practice.

French, Mark J. "The nature of the relationship between market orientation and performance". Thesis, Loughborough University, 2011. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/8950.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
A review of the literature indicates that a universally enhancing relationship between market orientation and performance is not conclusively supported. Recent research suggests that the relationship between marketing investments and profit may be inverted U-shaped such that there is an optimal level of marketing investments which maximises profit (Mantrala et al 2007). In this study, it is proposed that market orientation has different curvilinear relationships with different types of performance. Using a performance categorisation suggested by Kirca et al (2005), it is theorised that market orientation s relationship with revenue-based performance (e.g. sales growth, market share growth) is subject to diminishing returns such that performance is enhanced for all levels of market orientation but the incremental benefits diminish as market orientation increases. For cost-based performance (e.g. profit, return on sales), it is proposed that the incremental costs of implementing market oriented activities may exceed the benefits. Thus, cost-based performance may have an inverted U-shaped relationship with market orientation. Three mechanisms by which diminishing returns affect the market orientation - performance relationship are identified; duplication, contradiction and prioritisation. A review of over 400 papers in the market orientation literature demonstrates that a research gap exists for different curvilinear relationships between market orientation and different types of performance. In particular, an inverted U-shaped relationship has not previously been found between market orientation and profit. A sampling frame was selected to control for both the macro-environment, and different performance levels in different industries (Dess and Robinson 1984). In a sample of 113 UK car dealers operating in the new car market the hypothesised relationships were tested using both objective and subjective performance measures. The findings relating to objective performance measures support the full inverted U-shaped relationship between market orientation and profit across the observed range of values. The relationship for objective revenue-based performance is more curvilinear with significant linear and curvilinear components. In highly competitive environments maximum profit shifts to a higher level of market orientation and overall the relationship is predominantly enhancing. Conversely, in uncompetitive environments profit is maximised at a lower level of market orientation and the relationship becomes detrimental at moderate market orientation levels. In recession, the profit for all new car dealers is reduced and maximum profit occurs at a lower market orientation level. In addition, the relationship between market orientation and sales growth turns negative in a recession. Interestingly, the results for subjective performance are distinctly different to, and sometimes contradict, the objective performance results. In particular, subjective performance predominantly has a positive linear relationship with market orientation.

Moreton, Sam. "Clarifying the relationship between social connectedness and connectedness to nature". Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/18926.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Recent attention has been given to the construct of connectedness to nature and its role in fostering both pro-environmental behavior and well-being. Connectedness to nature shares conceptual similarities with social connectedness: both involve a cognitive schema of the self and other as overlapping, positive emotions towards the other and a commitment to protect the other. However, little research has systematically investigated the relationship between connectedness to nature and social connectedness. A series of eight studies were conceived with the following aims: 1) to clarify inconsistent correlations reported in the literature between connectedness to nature and social connectedness; 2) to test the potential of exposure to beautiful nature to reduce the effects of social exclusion; 3) to test the effects of social exclusion on connectedness to nature, intentions to engage pro-environmental behaviors and willingness to sacrifice for the environment and 4) to test the effects of moral elevation on connectedness to nature, intentions to engage in pro-environmental behaviors and willingness to sacrifice for the environment. Overall, although there was some mixed evidence, the studies within this thesis provide preliminary evidence for a positive causal effect of feelings of social connectedness on connectedness to nature: increasing or decreasing feelings of social connectedness appears to result in corresponding changes in people’s affective bond with nature, at least in the short term.

Ibrahim, Bibi Bashirah. "The relationship between views of the nature of science and views of the nature of scientific measurements". Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/8661.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 124-132).
This study builds on the work started by a collaboration between researchers at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and the University of York, UK, which focused or undergraduate physics students' understanding of measurement and uncertainty. The work led to the development of a paradigmatic model which has been found to be useful for classifying students' views on measurement during experimental work. In brief, in the "set" paradigm the ensemble of data is modelled by theoretical constructs from which a "best estimate" and the degree of dispersion (an interval) are reported. However, the majority of students who arrive at university operate within the "point paradigm". They subscribe to the notion that a perfect measurement is one which has no uncertainty associated with it. For many students, therefore, the ideal is to perform a single "correct" measurement with the utmost care. When presented with data that are dispersed, they often attempt to choose the "correct" value (for example the recurring value) from amongst the values in the ensemble. The present work explored the relationship between students' views on the nature of science (NOS) and the nature of scientific measurement. Modifying and supplementing existing diagnostic items in both areas of measurement and nature of science, the VASM (Views About Scientific Measurement) questionnaire was developed, piloted and administered to 179 first year physics students at the University of Cape Town. An analysis of the responses resulted in four profiles of students' views on the nature of science. It also revealed that students who view measurement according to the point paradigm generally have an objective view about science, perceive the purpose of scientific experiment to prove a phenomenon to be correct and use the ‘scientific method' to get a predicted answer in order to be consistent and successful in the scientific endeavour. Set paradigm students acknowledge the importance of human inference in science and scientific experiment is considered as a tool to understand the behaviour of nature. The consequences of this work for the teaching and learning of physics at a tertiary level are discussed.

Abstract (sommario):
Software effort estimation still remains a challenging and debatable research area. Most of the software effort estimation models take software size as the base input. Among the others, Constructive Cost Model (COCOMO II) is a widely known effort estimation model. It uses Source Lines of Code (SLOC) as the software size to estimate effort. However, many problems arise while using SLOC as a size measure due to its late availability in the software life cycle. Therefore, a lot of research has been going on to identify the nature of relationship between software functional size and effort since functional size can be measured very early when the functional user requirements are available. There are many other project related factors that were found to be affecting the effort estimation based on software size. Application Type, Programming Language, Development Type are some of them. This thesis aims to investigate the nature of relationship between software size and development effort. It explains known effort estimation models and gives an understanding about the Function Point and Functional Size Measurement (FSM) method. Factors, affecting relationship between software size and development effort, are also identified. In the end, an effort estimation model is developed after statistical analyses. We present the results of an empirical study which we conducted to investigate the significance of different project related factors on the relationship between functional size and effort. We used the projects data in the International Software Benchmarking Standards Group (ISBSG) dataset. We selected the projects which were measured by utilizing the Common Software Measurement International Consortium (COSMIC) Function Points. For statistical analyses, we performed step wise Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Analysis of Co-Variance (ANCOVA) techniques to build the multi variable models. We also performed Multiple Regression Analysis to formalize the relation.

West, Euan. "The nature of rights of relief arising from a cautionary relationship". Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 2018. http://digitool.abdn.ac.uk:80/webclient/DeliveryManager?pid=239875.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
In Scots law, a creditor may enlist the aid of a third party known as a 'cautioner', who agrees to pay the creditor if the principal debtor defaults. Should the creditor see fit to sue the cautioner, the latter may seek compensation from the principal debtor for the whole amount paid or, if there are other cautioners, a pro rata contribution from the ones who did not pay. While these so-called rights of 'relief' are well established in Scottish case law, there is increasing controversy as to their nature. The present thesis engages with this problem headon, identifying the rationales for a cautioner's various rights of relief and examining how those rationales shape the content of the cautioner's claim in each case. By considering relief within the restricted confines of a cautionary relationship, the thesis aims to demystify a subject that is often complex and diffuse. It also seeks to establish the subject as a free-standing entity, independent of the historical and substantive inter-mixtures through which it has often been conceived in Scots law. After placing the cautioner's rights of relief into their private-law context (Chapters One to Five), the thesis examines each of these rights in detail. Chapter Six considers the basis of a cautioner's right to 'pro rata relief', and Chapter Seven discusses the content of that right, with particular reference to cases where there are three or more cautioners. Chapter Eight builds on the analysis in Chapter Six by determining on what basis a cautioner may claim 'total relief' from the principal debtor. Finally, Chapter Nine examines a cautioner's right to seek relief before paying anything to the creditor.

Abstract (sommario):
Compassion is frequently discussed in relation to nursing. However, to date, research in this area has been largely theoretical, and empirical investigation has been limited. This qualitative study aimed to construct an understanding of the nature of compassion in nursing and what makes it possible, in order to address the paucity of research and lack of consensus in this field. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six nurses and six patients across three hospital departments, with the resulting data systematically analysed and categorised in accordance with principles of constructivist grounded theory. This study has facilitated a broad and multifaceted understanding of the construct of compassion, which emphasised the delicate interpersonal nature of compassionate care that occurs between the nurse and patient. Study findings suggest some factors that inhibit and facilitate compassion which play a powerful role in a nurse’s ability to care compassionately. The findings of the present study challenge the suggestion that feelings-based care practices for patients should be abandoned in favour of etiquette-based approaches; it also contests contemporary wisdom that the best cost-effective measures are achieved through driving for efficiencies. Suggestions are made regarding the role of counselling psychology in supporting the emergence of compassion in healthcare and implications for nursing practice and future research directions are explored.

Abstract (sommario):
Within American religious culture, there is a small but significant and growing movement that overlaps and interacts with the environmental movement. It's known by many names, including Contemporary Paganism, Neo-Paganism, Earth Religion, and Nature Religion. A few years of observation at Starwood Festival, the largest annual Pagan gathering in North America, revealed that many individuals who identify as Pagan (or Wiccan, Druid, animist, or another of the identities that fall under the Pagan umbrella) include in their spiritual practice engagement with faeries or other nature spirits. My research employed qualitative methods including participant observation and interviews to examine the extent to which engagement with faeries and other nature spirits among Pagan festival attendees affects their relationships with nature and their behaviors in the natural world. The Pagan understanding of the Earth and all of its inhabitants and elements as animate or inspirited, as exemplified in the phenomenon of faery faith, conflates the wellbeing of the Earth and wild nature with the psychological wellbeing of each individual human, making this worldview highly compatible with the emerging field of ecopsychology. Drawing on theories of enchantment, consciousness, multiple realities, imagination, and play, my interpretations of the stories of my informants contribute additional perspective to the contemporary practice of Paganism as a small but growing countercultural movement within the dominant Western culture, particularly as it informs the human-(in)-nature relationship.

Gould, Christina Marie. "On the Interpenetration of Nature and Spirit: A Loving Relationship with the Earth and Our Natural Environment". OpenSIUC, 2011. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/dissertations/434.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
In this dissertation I examine our relationship with the Earth and our natural environment by clarifying what it means to be human. I do this by looking at the interpenetration of spheres of being or philosophical anthropology to articulate how the human being is the dynamic meeting point of life and spirit. In this interpenetration of life and spirit, the task of the human being as loving flashes forth. On the basis of this task, it is possible to realize a loving relationship with the Earth and our natural environment that is not based on domination or use. To understand further how we are situated in relation to the earth and our natural environment, I discuss shortcomings of both the conservation and deep ecology movements. I also discuss problems with traditional philosophical anthropologies to highlight how some of these presuppositions have been incorporated into our relationship with the earth and our natural environment. To illuminate how life and spirit are enmeshed in one another, I describe Nicolai Hartmann's new ontology and Edmund Husserl's regional ontology as well as Scheler's philosophical anthropology since all of these philosophers ground their reflections in experience. However, since Scheler grounds being human in loving, his approach is unique and not only resolves the supposed dualism between life and spirit but gives us a fresh outlook on the responsibility inherent to being human. This opens the possibility for living a loving relationship with the earth and our natural environment.

Arim, Rubab Gozde. "The reciprocal nature of the relationship between parenting and adolescent problem behaviors". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/7013.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This research is comprised of three separate studies which utilized adolescent self-report data from the Canadian National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth (NLSCY). The first study evaluated the factor structure and the equality of measurement properties of three parenting behavior scales (i.e., Parental Nurturance, Parental Rejection, and Parental Monitoring) over a four-year period and found that the factor structure of the NLSCY parenting behavior scales did not show a good fit across three age groups. Revised models for Parental Nurturance and Monitoring were tested and confirmed, however, these models exhibited only configural invariance over time. The second study examined the factor structure and the equality of measurement properties of three problem behavior scales (i.e., Indirect Aggression, Direct Aggression, and Property Offence) across gender and three adolescent age groups (10-11, 12-13, and 14-15 years). This study found support for the structure of the three problem behavior scales, but failed to provide evidence for measurement invariance across groups. All three scales achieved configural invariance across gender and age groups. In addition, the Indirect Aggression scale achieved loading invariance across gender and for the 12 versus 14 year-olds; whereas the Direct Aggression scale exhibited loading invariance for only the 10 versus 12 year-olds. The third study investigated the reciprocal relationship between parental nurturance and adolescent aggression (both indirect and direct aggression) over a four-year period and found that, for girls, parental nurturance at age 10 was associated with both indirect and direct aggression at age 12. For boys, parental nurturance at age 12 was associated with both aggressive behaviors at age 14. The implications of these results for the measurement of parenting and problem behaviors and for the examination of the reciprocal influences in transactional models are discussed, with suggestions for future research.

How does one mediate between nature and the city as development continues to arise out of necessity? What is the significance of the connection between nature and city and how can they be articulated? What is the relationship between architecture and nature in the context of densely settled area? This thesis attempts to address these questions through the application of environmental consciousness with three different scales: urban, community and individual. The site is known as Boston State Hospital Site in Mattapan where existing dense neighborhoods and abundant natural environments meet. Moreover, Boston Nature Center of Audubon Society is a major component of the site. Given the mixture of dichotomous settings, this thesis attempts to show how inter penetration between built environment and natural setting can proceed to bring urban living quality through Eco-housing development.

Abstract (sommario):

Macrophomina phaseolina is a generalist ascomycetic fungal pathogen, capable of infecting over 500 genera of plants and limiting yield in crops grown in Mississippi. Recent documentation of M. phaseolina on Impatiens × hybrida, a newfound host, has merited multiple experiments to quantify the exact nature of this relationship. Despite M. phaseolina being a soil-borne pathogen, disease symptoms were only reported in aboveground tissue. Mode of infection experiments revealed both above and belowground tissues are susceptible to infection. In vitro experiments identified the optimal temperature for the growth of M. phaseolina to be 26°C, where more than 10x the accumulated biomass resulted compared to samples grown at 37°C. Impatiens × hybrida hosts were particularly prone to infection at temperatures above 27°C. In vitro fungicide assays revealed Banrot and T-Bird to be suitable chemical control agents for limiting M. phaseolina growth.

Graham, Katharine. "Shizen Nōhō: Restoring the Relationship Between Food, Nature, and People in Japan". Scholarship @ Claremont, 2019. https://scholarship.claremont.edu/scripps_theses/1331.

Abstract (sommario):
In Japan’s postwar era, agriculture has become highly industrialized, involving heavy machinery, chemical fertilizers, and pesticides, all in the name of “progress.” Through employing such practices, humans have attempted to improve upon nature’s way of doing things, and in turn have degraded the soil’s fertility, natural ecosystems, and human health. In response to this, Shizen Nōhō has emerged in Japan as an alternative way of cultivating food. Shizen Nōhō practitioners challenge the notion that we need chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and machinery to farm successfully. Rather, they advocate for a way of growing food that functions seamlessly with natural ecosystems. This thesis explores the value of Shizen Nōhō in sustaining the natural environment, providing food for communities, and catalyzing a shift towards a more harmonious relationship with nature. By drawing on the research I conducted in central Japan, I illustrate how Shizen Nōhō offers a solution that can reunite people to the ecosystems that sustain them. Placing Shizen Nōhō within the larger context of Japan’s food system, I detail ways in which the priorities of the Japanese government and agricultural industry are not compatible with Shizen Nōhō. Therefore, if Shizen Nōhō is to be more widely adopted in Japan, communities must drive this change, rather than governmental and industrial entities. If adopted, Shizen Nōhō may serve as a vehicle for transforming the way humans interact with and view themselves in relation to nature.

Norberg, Magnus. "On the Nature of the Multidimensional Firm–Bank Exchange". Licentiate thesis, Mittuniversitetet, Avdelningen för ekonomivetenskap och juridik, 2016. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:miun:diva-28622.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this study is to explore the nature of firm–bank exchange. Using a qualitative research method and existing theory, by capturing transaction-based and relationship-based elements, I examine ten firms and eight different bank services important for the exchange between the firms and their banks. The study indicates that the exchange is more complex than previous theories have proclaimed, since the nature of the exchange differs when central elements of different bank services are compared. There are bank services, such as bank account and loans, which have a high degree of both transaction-based and relationship-based elements. Saving and investment are also indicated as consisting of both transaction-based and relationship-based elements. Other services, such as depositing of cash, digital depositing and payments clearly have a higher proportion of transaction-based elements than of relationship-based elements, but depositing of cash differs somewhat from digital depositing regarding some of the elements investigated. The study suggests that advising has a high level of relationship-based elements, while the transaction-based elements are much less evident. For the service exchange of money, both transaction-based and relationship-based elements are present at a level below medium. This demonstrates that firm–bank exchange has a multidimensional nature.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis analyses the individual-nature relationship in Samuel Taylor Coleridge'
s poems. It begins with an overview of Coleridge'
s inconsistent views on the subject, as reflected in his prose writings, and explains the personal reasons behind such inconsistencies. The thesis then asserts that despite the inconsonant views expressed in his prose writings, Coleridge'
s poems display a consistent view of the individual-nature relationship. According to this view, the relationship is constituted of three consecutive stages. In the first stage the individual passively perceives nature with his senses. When he ascends to the second stage, he forms spiritual unity with nature and becomes one with her. Finally, in the third stage, through the use of his imagination, he creates a new nature out of the one he has perceived. This view of the individual-nature relationship will be illustrated and exemplified through the analysis of the poems "
The Eolian Harp"
, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, and "
Dejection: An Ode"

Alencar, Tatiana Abaurre. "Biophilic design framework : structuring the relationship between exposure to nature and health benefits". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/44162.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The research presented in this thesis addresses the need to incorporate strategies that promote human nature connection into everyday life in order to support the inhabitant’s health and well-being and promote pro-environmental behavior. Moreover, this thesis addresses the need to create a built environment that acknowledges and responds to the stressors associated with modern lifestyle that are reinforced by a disconnection from nature. This idea is grounded in the increasing scientific evidence that supports the use of strategies for connection to nature as a way of promoting restoration possibilities and reducing demands imposed by the environment, in order to promote and maintain psychological and physiological health. Although progress has been made towards understanding how to implement biophilic design into current architectural practice, this research addresses the existing need for structure within the biophilic design strategies regarding their relationship to health and well-being benefits. In this way, a framework was developed to reorganize and restructure the biophilic design strategies according to their potential for health, while accounting for the relationship between these strategies and the influencing qualitative aspects that were identified within the literature: exposure and inhabitant’s needs. The proposed framework builds on the existing strategies provided by the field of biophilic design while restructuring them to provide a new dimension of understanding based on the theoretical fields of environmental preference and psychological restoration. In this way, this thesis provides a useful way to begin to explore and discuss the types of nature exposures and experiences that will support our need for a healthy life. This framework can be seen as a step towards providing initial guidance for designers by focusing attention on the crucial aspects of the nature-health relationship.

Pugh, Emma. "The nature and extent of the relationship between performance measures and short-termism". Thesis, Cardiff University, 2017. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/107192/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis researches the nature and extent of the relationship between performance measures and short-termism. It is empirically based, with the relationship being investigated by way of a critical realist informed case study of a multinational retail organisation. To unpack the relationship and drill down further into the issues involved, the research addresses four questions: How do managers understand the short, medium, and long term? How do inter-temporal decisions manifest? What is the nature of the relationship between performance measures and short-termism? What is the extent of the relationship between performance measures and short-termism? Utilising a combination of semi-structured interviews, non-participant observation, and company documents, the thesis argues that the concepts of short, medium, and long term are empirically messy due to heterogenous meanings. By linking managers’ views about their time horizons to their involvement in different inter-temporal decisions, the thesis proposes that any future definition of short-termism should not just emphasise the inter-temporal trade-off involved in actions, but also the intention that underpins those actions. The thesis reshapes the financial/non-financial dichotomy to illustrate that quantitative (financial and non-financial) measures can lead to short-termism. Nevertheless, between-person differences in inter-temporal responses to how performance measurement information is used to evaluate and reward managers complicates this relationship. Thus, over the course of this thesis, a contingency-based framework is developed; the framework provides individual-level explanations about when, how, and why short-termism occurs. The thesis contributes to the behavioural accounting literature, particularly the empirical literature, which examines the behavioural effects of financial measures by advancing the conceptualisation of short-termism, and provides a nuanced understanding of how short-termism manifests. It also contributes to this literature by synthesising the conceptual landscape in order to build an integrated framework of the nature and extent of the relationship between performance measures and short-termism.

Gilham, Candice Anne. "The nature of work-family conflict and it's relationship with psychological health outcomes". Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/14150.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This study examined the nature and psychological health outcomes of work-family conflict amongst South African corporate employees from two organisations in the Western Cape (N = 160). Cross-sectional data was obtained via self-report questionnaires. Exploratory factor analysis evidenced the bi-directionality of work-family conflict, work-to-family conflict (W2FC) and family-to-work conflict (F2WC). Contrary to expecting a multidimensional model in each direction, exploratory factor analyses showed that W2FC was a unidimensional construct. However in the direction F2WC, a time and strain dimensions was found supporting its multidimensionality. Using standard multiple regression analysis, W2FC explained a significant proportion of the variance in psychological strain (i.e. anxiety and depression) and burnout (exhaustion and depersonalisation). Interestingly F2WC did not explain a significant proportion of variance in any of the psychological health outcomes. These results show that pressures arising in the work domain negatively influence employees' wellbeing. These results are discussed and management implications presented.

Reigle, Karen E. "The Nature of Relationships Between Young Children and Their Secondary Caregiver In a Childcare Center Classroom". Diss., Virginia Tech, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/11150.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Children' s relationships with their childcare teachers and its effects on their subsequent behaviors, attachments, and outcomes have been an interest in the last two or three decades primarily due to the significant increase of young children in full-time childcare. Attachment Theory, and its identifying behaviors in children categorized by the Strange Situation or the Attachment Q-Sort, has been the main focus of previous research. The purpose of my study, using an ethnographic approach, was to understand and describe the varied and multiple relationships between children (approximate ages 12 to 24 months) and their childcare teacher in their day-to-day interactions. Observations were my primary source of data, supported by videotaped sessions, and parent and teacher interviews. My focus was on secondary caregiver-child dyads, their relationships, and the parameters and identifying behaviors characterizing each pair. Data collection took place over an eight-week period in one toddler center classroom where I was a passive participant observer. Results indicated the children had warm, nurturing relationships, often with multiple caregivers, without the prevailing attachment behaviors. My research did not support the customary categorization of childcare relationships using the attachment paradigm, nor an increase in the insecure-avoidant category among children in full-time childcare. Evidence suggested, instead, a broader base of relationship descriptions, and a future development of a multiple caregiver model analogous to the extended family for understanding the varied relationships within a childcare center setting.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This study discusses the way in which hunters perceive and relate to nature and wildlife. Using the qualitative data analysis technique, the study examines how culture, attitudes, perceived nature connectedness and actions toward nature reflect certain characteristics, which makes it possible to establish the type of relationships that hunters have with nature. Known for their popular hunting grounds and historical character, the study draws on examples from Southern and Eastern Africa. Specific value dimensions and wildlife orientations were applied to establish the different types of hunter-nature relationships. Historically, colonial hunting practices (which differed considerably from that of indigenous communities who intermingled freely with wildlife, and conserved their resources according to their cultures) are synonymous with large-scale slaughtering, disregard for natural environments and the extinction of wildlife species. Viewing nature and humans as separate entities meant that hunters had a need to dominate and control nature. Since then, post-independence hunters' relationships with nature have gradually transformed to support a more integrated understanding of connecting and communicating with nature.

Abstract (sommario):
North American nature writers often ground their environmental thought on the assumption that Western civilization constitutes a means through which human beings have detached themselves from more natural ways of living. According to such views, a discourse between civilization and nature appears to be impossible due to the essential lack of shared traits that is attributed to them. In reason of the acceptance of a divide between Western civilization and nature, poets such as Gary Snyder embrace the notion of primitiveness, that is, the idea that primitive people were more attuned to nature and in themselves more natural than technologically advanced societies. In Snyder’s work, this belief leads to a conflicted poetics that bestows innate goodness to certain primitive or indigenous human cultures, which are often imbued with an aura of mysticism, and demonizes the products of industrialized civilization. Elizabeth Bishop’s work, however, provides us with a fresh outlook on the human-nature relationship. Although the conflict between civilization and nature is present in her work too, Bishop manages to merge the two worlds successfully. In fact, by using images that mingle the human and the natural milieus—such as the presence of human-made elements within the natural environment and her focus on both domesticated and wild animals—Bishop often turns human contamination into epiphanic elation, thus suggesting that coexistence between civilization and nature constitutes both a possibility and a factual necessity.
