Reinforced concrete (RC) columns are the primary load-bearing structural components in buildings. Over time these columns may need to be repaired or strengthened either due to defective construction, having higher loads than those foreseen in the initial design of the structure, or as a result of material deterioration or accidental damage. Three external strengthening methods, namely steel jacketing, concrete jacketing and composite jacketing, are commonly adopted for upgrading the ultimate load capacity of RC columns. Among these strengthening techniques for RC columns, steel jacketing, which is easy to construct, less prone to debonding and has better fire resistance than bonded plates, has been proven to be an effective retrofitting scheme and is the most commonly used. Different methods for strengthening existing RC columns have been proposed in the literature. However, no matter which jacket is used to strengthen RC columns, the adverse effects of pre-existing loads on stress-lagging between the concrete core and the new jacket have yet to be solved. In order to deal with this problem, a new postcompression approach was proposed for strengthening preloaded RC columns. In this approach, the slightly precambered steel plates were used. The advantages of this ‘post-compressed plates’ (PCP) strengthening technique are that both the strength and deformability of existing columns can be enhanced and the design life of old buildings can be prolonged. Due to the aforementioned advantages, the PCP strengthening technique was investigated in this study. To begin with, axial compression tests of the PCP strengthened columns were conducted. The overall response, in particular the internal force distribution between concrete and steel plates was obtained. It was observed that the plate thickness and preloading level had dominant effects on the behaviour of PCP strengthened columns. Subsequently, eccentric compression tests of PCP strengthened columns were undertaken. The behaviour of PCP strengthened columns was mainly affected by the degree of eccentricity and plate thickness. Placing flat and precambered steel plates on the tension and compression sides respectively of the RC columns and using post-compression method on the compression side can significantly improve the ultimate load capacity of RC columns under large eccentricity; while placing precambered steel plates on the side faces of the RC columns can significantly improve the ultimate load capacity of RC columns under small eccentricity. Finally, axial compression tests of PCP repaired fire-exposed columns were carried out. The ultimate load capacity of fire-exposed columns can be restored up to 72% of original level by using this post-compression approach. The corresponding theoretical models were also developed to predict the ultimate load capacity of PCP strengthened columns. Comparison of theoretical and experimental results showed that the theoretical models accurately predicted the load-carrying capacities of PCP strengthened columns. According to the experimental and theoretical results, a unified design procedure for the PCP strengthened columns was proposed to aid engineers in designing this new type of PCP strengthened columns and to ensure proper column detailing for desirable performance. The design procedure was validated by the available experimental and theoretical results.

Premièrement, on a clarifié autant que possible les caractéristiques les plus importantes du comportement sismique des structures irrégulières existantes ; deuxièmement, basé sur la leçon apprise de l'analyse des données expérimentales, on a proposé des critères pour réduire la vulnérabilité sismique de cette classe de structures en concevant des interventions efficaces de réhabilitation. Le travail a été largement basé sur l'exploitation des données dérivant d'une campagne expérimentale étendue effectuée dans le cadre du projet de recherche européen 'SPEAR'. Plusieurs moyens ont été employés à cet effet, complétant l'approche expérimentale : realisation d'un modèle numérique aux éléments finis, application des procédures simplifiées d'évaluation sismique, utilisation de l'analyse modale non linéaire de Karhunen-Loeve
The research is a contribution to the development of tools and criteria for the seismic assessment and retrofitting of existing reinforced concrete structures, in particular plan-wise irregular ones. Ln fact, the 'capacity design' method, based on the rationale of the equal displacernent rule and the central role of ductility, and usually employed for the design of new structures, does not automatically extend to existing irregular structures. The work is thoroughly based on a large scale experimental activity carried out in the framework of the EC-funded project SPEAR (Seismic Performance Assessment and Rehabilitation) and consisting of a series of pseudodynamic tests on a full-size plan-wise irregular three storey frame structure, bath in the as-built and in two different retrofitted configurations. Based on the experimental data, the research attempted at first at clarifying the basic features of the seismic response of such structures ; following to that, the proposed criteria for the reduction of their seismic vulnerability and for the design of effective rehabilitation interventions were presented. To this end, the experimental approach was complemented by the numerical one, with the creation of a numerical model into a finite element structural analysis software and the application of the Karhunen-Loeve nonlinear modal analysis method

Under seismic excitation, the centre of stiffness of an eccentric structure is stationary as long as the structure remains elastic. Once yielding occurs, the centre of stiffness will begin to move away from its original position, as the torsional forces induced by the eccentricity cause uneven distribution of yielding among members. This movement of the centre of stiffness very often increases the eccentricity of the structure causing further damage. The purpose of this thesis is to determine the significance of this magnification of the initial eccentricity. A procedure for locating the centre of stiffness was developed and incorporated into a time-step dynamic analysis program code named DRAINTABS. Two models were chosen to describe the moment-rotation relationship of reinforced concrete members; the elasto-plastic model and the Takeda model. The former is a bilinear model whereas the latter takes into account the strength degradation of reinforced concrete members under cyclic loading. A number of reinforced concrete buildings were studied. It was found that the centre of stiffness did not always move towards the side of the structure which was more heavily loaded due to the torque induced by the eccenticity. Excursions in the other direction were possible when the translational motion was not in phase with the torsional motion at the instant of maximum excursion. Moreover, when the strength degrading characteristic of R/C members was modelled, the eccentricity of the structure increased gradually with increasing length of excitation. However, this increase was found to be small and therefore insignificant. The procedure for locating the centre of stiffness was also incorporated into another analysis program code named PITSA which utilizes the modified substitute structure method. The results obtained were compared to those obtained using DRAINTABS. Although PITSA has been proven to be a relatively inexpensive yet reliable alternative to a time step analysis, it failed to predict the maximum displacement of the centre of stiffness with any acceptable degree of accuracy.

The stress-strain relationship of concrete in flexure is one of the essential parameters in assessing the flexural strength and ductility of reinforced concrete (RC) structures. An overview of previous research studies revealed that the presence of strain gradient would affect the maximum concrete stress and respective strain developed in flexure. Previously, researchers have conducted experimental studies to investigate and quantify the strain gradient effect on maximum concrete stress and respective strain by developing two strain-gradient-dependent factors k3 and ko for modifying the flexural concrete stress-strain curve. In this study, the author established a new analytical concrete constitutive model to describe the stress-strain behavior of both normal-and high-strength concrete in flexure with the effect of strain gradient considered. Based on this, comprehensive parametric studies have been conducted to investigate the combined effects of strain gradient and concrete strength on flexural strength and ductility design of RC beams and columns with concrete strength up to 100 MP a by employing the strain-gradient-dependent concrete stress-strain curve using non-linear moment-curvature analysis. From the results of the parametric studies, it is evident that both the flexural strength and ductility of RC beams and columns are improved under strain gradient effect. A design value of ultimate concrete strain of 0.0032and anew equivalent rectangular concrete stress block incorporating the combined effects of strain gradient and concrete strength have been proposed and validated by comparing the proposed theoretical strength with the strength of 198 RC beams and 275 RC columns measured experimentally by other researchers. It is apparent from the comparison that the proposed equations can predict more accurately the flexural strength of RC beams and columns than the current RC design codes. Lastly, for practical engineering design purpose, design formulas and charts have been produced for flexural strength and ductility design of RC beams and columns incorporating the combined effects of strain gradient and concrete strength.

Abstract (sommario):
This research project is the second part of a research program carried out by Itagawa (2005) who studied the seismic response of a half-scale model of an existing Montreal bridge built in the 1960's. This project studies the seismic behaviour of the retrofit carried out on the frame structure studied in the first part of the research program. The retrofit was made following the requirements of the current Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code (CHBDC). The philosophy of the CHBDC is to provide flexural yielding in the ductile elements so that brittle failure modes such as shear are prevented. This capacity-design approach resulted in a ductile response and significant energy dissipation of the retrofitted structure.
The retrofit was designed in accordance with the CHBDC provisions. The cap beam and the beam-column joint regions were strengthened with a reinforced concrete sleeve containing additional transverse and longitudinal bars so that plastic hinging would form in the columns. This retrofit represents minimum intervention to improve the response of the frame. The retrofit frame was then subjected to both gravity loads and reversed cyclic loading to simulate seismic loading on the structure. The predictions of the response of the retrofitted frame provided reasonable estimates of first yielding in the column and the general yielding of the frame. Although the columns would not meet the requirements for ductile columns, they had sufficient shear strength and did exhibit a displacement ductility of about 2.3.

Corrosion of steel reinforcements is the leading causes of malfunction or even failures of reinforced concrete (RC) structures nationwide and worldwide for many decades. This arises up to substantial economic burden on repairs and rehabilitations to maintain and extend their service life of those RC public projects. The inherent natures of glass fiber-reinforced polymers (GFRP) bars, from their superior corrosion resistance to high strength-to-weight ratio, have promoted their acceptance as a viable alternative for steel reinforcement in civil infrastructures. Comprehensive understanding of the bond between GFRP bars and concrete, in particular under in-service conditions or extremely severe events, enables scientists and engineers to provide their proper design, assessment and long-term predictions, and ultimately to implement them toward the corrosion-free concrete products. This research aims to develop a holistic framework through an experimental, analytical and numerical study to gain deep understanding of the bond mechanism, behavior, and its long-term durability under harsh environments. The bond behavior and failure modes of GFRP bar to concrete are investigated through the accelerated aging tests with various environmental conditions, including alkaline and/or saline solutions, freezing-thawing cycles. The damage evolution of the bond is formulated from Damage Mechanics, while detailed procedures using the Arrhenius law and time shift factor approach are developed to predict the long-term bond degradation over time. Besides, the machine learning techniques of the artificial neural network integrated with the genetic algorithm are used for bond strength prediction and anchorage reliability assessment. Clearly, test data allow further calibration and verification of the analytical models and the finite element simulation. Bond damage evolution using the secant modulus of the bond-slip curves could effectively evaluate the interface degradation against slip and further identify critical factors that affect the bond design and assessment under the limit states. Long-term prediction reveals that the moisture content and elevated temperature could impact the material degradation of GFRP bars, thereby affecting their service life. In addition, the new attempt of the Data-to-Information concept using the machine learning techniques could yield valuable insight into the bond strength prediction and anchorage reliability analysis for their applications in RC structures.

External prestressed carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) straps can be used to strengthen shear deficient reinforced concrete (RC) structures. The strengthening system is associated with a number of parameters including the number of straps, strap locations, strap stiffness, and strap prestress. The initial goal of this research was to identify the optimum values for these parameters in order to design an efficient and effective shear retrofitting system. The shear friction theory (SFT) and modified compression field theory (MCFT) were identified as potential predictive theories to model the shear behaviour of RC beams retrofitted with CFRP straps. Possible modifications to the theories to reflect CFRP prestressed straps were investigated. Two popular optimisation algorithms namely the genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimisation (PSO) were coded and tested with six test functions. These algorithms were used to find the optimum shear retrofitting configurations and also to reduce the computational cost associated with the SFT and MCFT evaluations. An experimental investigation was carried out to validate the SFT and MCFT predictions for various CFRP strap configurations. The investigation consisted of an unstrengthened control beam and five CFRP strengthened beams. The shear behaviour of the beams was significantly influenced by the CFRP strap configurations. A critical load level where the beam stiffness started to deteriorate significantly was identified. It was found that there was a correlation between this load level and the yielding of the internal shear links and a rapid increase in crack openmg. The SFT and MCFT were validated using the experimental results. The peak shear capacities predicted using the SFT were more consistent with the stiffness deteriorating loads identified in the experimental investigation than with the ultimate loads of the beams. The reinforcement forces and crack opening values found from the SFT were consistent with the experimental results. The MCFT predicted the total shear response, ultimate shear capacity, crack opening, and internal and external reinforcement forces in the beams. The accuracy of the MCFT predictions reduced slightly when either the strap configuration was highly nonuniforrn or the initial prestress level in the straps was relatively low. The shear link yielding load levels predicted by the MCFT were found to be similar to the SFT predictions. By using the coded optimisation algorithms in combination with the SFT or MCFT, the optimum CFRP strap configurations were found for a selected case study. Both theories predicted an offset for the optimum strap locations from the locations associated with equal spacings along the shear span. A reasonable agreement between the SFT and MCFT predictions for the optimum shear strengths and strap locations was observed. A parametric study demonstrated that the concrete strength, internal shear link locations, beam depth, and shear span to depth ratio of the beam do not significantly influence the optimum strengthening configurations for the CFRP strap system. ENGLISH SUMMARY: It is found that the serviceability limit state often governs the design of slender reinforced concrete members. Slender flexural members often have a percentage tension reinforcement less than 1.0% and an applied bending moment just above the point of first cracking. For such members, the available methods to evaluate the serviceability conditions produce inadequate and unrealistic results. The evaluation of the serviceability of a slender member includes the calculation of the predicted deflection, either by empirical hand-calculation or analysing a finite element model, and the verification using the span-to-effective-depth ratio. The focus of the study is on flat slab structures. It investigates the different deflection prediction methods and the span-to-effective-depth ratio verifications from various design standards. These design standards include the ACI 318 (2002), the SABS 0100-1 (2000), the EC2 (2004) and the BS 8110 (1997). The background to the methods, as well as the parameters which influences the deflection development for lightly reinforced members, are investigated in order to define the limitations of the methods. As a result of the investigation of the deflection calculation methods, an Alternative Approach is suggested and included in the comparisons of the various methods. The deflection prediction methods and the span/effective depth verification procedures are accurately formulated to predict the serviceability behaviour of beams. Additional approaches had to be used to apply these methods to a two-dimensional plane such as that of a flat slab structure. The different deflection prediction methods and the span/effective depth verification methods are calculated and compared to the recorded data of seven experimental flat slab specimens as performed by others. A study by Gilbert and Guo (2005) accurately recorded the flexural behaviour of flat slab specimens under uniformly distributed loads for test periods up to 750 days. The methods to evaluate the serviceability of a slender member were also applied to slab examples designed using South African standards. The study concludes by suggesting a suitable deflection prediction method for different parameter (limitation) categories with which a slender member can comply to. The typical span/effective depth ratio trend is also presented as the percentage tension reinforcement for a slender member changes. It is observed that the empirical hand-calculation methods present more reliable results than those of the finite element models. The empirical hand-calculation methods are accurate depending on the precision to which the slab was constructed relative to the actual slab design. The comparison of the deflection methods with South African case studies identified the role played by construction procedures, material parameters and loading history on slab behaviour.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die diensbaarheidstoestand is in baie gevalle die bepalende faktor vir die ontwerp van slank gewapende beton elemente bepaal. Slank elemente, soos lig bewapende buigbare beton elemente, het gewoonlik ‘n persentasie trekbewapening van minder as 1.0% en ‘n aangewende buigmoment net wat net groter is as die punt waar kraking voorkom. Die metodes beskikbaar om die diensbaarheid van sulke elemente te evalueer gee onvoldoende en onrealistiese resultate. Die evaluering van die elemente in die diensbaarheidstoestand sluit in die bepaling van defleksies deur berekening of die analise van ‘n eindige element model, en die gebruik van die span/effektiewe diepte metode. Die fokus van die studie is platbladstrukture. Die doel van die studie is om die verskillende metodes vir die bereking van defleksie asook die verifikasie volgens span/effektiewe diepte metodes van die verskillende ontwerp standaarde te ondersoek. Die ontwerp standaarde sluit die ACI 318 (2002), SABS 0100-1 (2000), EC2 (2004) en die BS 8110 (1997) in. Die agtergrond van hierdie metodes is ondersoek asook die parameters wat ‘n rol speel, sodat die beperkings van die metodes geidentifiseer kan word. Dit was gedoen om die Suid- Afrikaanse ontwerp van ligte bewapende beton elemente te evalueer. Die gevolgetrekkings stel ‘n gepaste defleksie metode vir ‘n slank element vir verskillende beperking kategorië voor. Dit is ook verduidelik hoe die tipiese span/effektiewe diepte verhouding met die persentasie trek bewapening vir ‘n slank element verander. Dit is bevind dat die imperiese handmetodes om defleksies te bereken, meer betroubaar as die eindige element modelle se resultate is. Die imperiese handberekening metodes is akkuraat relatief tot hoe akkuraat die blad konstruksie tot die blad ontwerp voltooi is. ‘n Vergelyking van defleksieberekening met Suid-Afrikaanse gevallestudies het die belangrikheid van konstruksieprosedures, materiallparamteres and belastingsgeskiedenis geïdentifiseer.

Reinforced concrete structures designed in pre-1970s are vulnerable under earthquakes due to lack of seismic detailing to provide adequate ductility. Typical deficiencies of pre-1970s reinforced concrete structures are (a) use of plain bars as longitudinal reinforcement, (b) inadequate anchorage of beam longitudinal reinforcement in the column (particularly exterior column), (c) lack of joint transverse reinforcement if any, (d) lapped splices located just above joint, and (e) low concrete strength. Furthermore, the use of infill walls is a controversial issue because it can help to provide additional stiffness to the structure on the positive side and on the negative side it can increase the possibility of soft-storey mechanisms if it is distributed irregularly. Experimental research to investigate the possible seismic behaviour of pre-1970s reinforced concrete structures have been carried out in the past. However, there is still an absence of experimental tests on the 3-D response of existing beam-column joints under bi-directional cyclic loading, such as corner joints. As part of the research work herein presented, a series of experimental tests on beam-column subassemblies with typical detailing of pre-1970s buildings has been carried out to investigate the behaviour of existing reinforced concrete structures. Six two-third scale plane frame exterior beam-column joint subassemblies were constructed and tested under quasi-static cyclic loading in the Structural Laboratory of the University of Canterbury. The reinforcement detailing and beam dimension were varied to investigate their effect on the seismic behaviour. Four specimens were conventional deep beam-column joint, with two of them using deformed longitudinal bars and beam bars bent in to the joint and the two others using plain round longitudinal bars and beam bars with end hooks. The other two specimens were shallow beam-column joint, one with deformed longitudinal bars and beam bars bent in to the joint, the other with plain round longitudinal bars and beam bars with end hooks. All units had one transverse reinforcement in the joint. The results of the experimental tests indicated that conventional exterior beam-column joint with typical detailing of pre-1970s building would experience serious diagonal tension cracking in the joint panel under earthquake. The use of plain round bars with end hooks for beam longitudinal reinforcement results in more severe damage in the joint core when compared to the use of deformed bars for beam longitudinal reinforcement bent in to the joint, due to the combination of bar slips and concrete crushing. One interesting outcome is that the use of shallow beam in the exterior beam-column joint could avoid the joint cracking due to the beam size although the strength provided lower when compared with the use of deep beam with equal moment capacity. Therefore, taking into account the low strength and stiffness, shallow beam can be reintroduced as an alternative solution in design process. In addition, the presence of single transverse reinforcement in the joint core can provide additional confinement after the first crack occurred, thus delaying the strength degradation of the structure. Three two-third scale space frame corner beam-column joint subassemblies were also constructed to investigate the biaxial loading effect. Two specimens were deep-deep beam-corner column joint specimens and the other one was deep-shallow beam-corner column joint specimen. One deep-deep beam-corner column joint specimen was not using any transverse reinforcement in the joint core while the two other specimens were using one transverse reinforcement in the joint core. Plain round longitudinal bars were used for all units with hook anchorage for the beam bars. Results from the tests confirmed the evidences from earthquake damage observations with the exterior 3-D (corner) beam-column joint subjected to biaxial loading would have less strength and suffer higher damage in the joint area under earthquake. Furthermore, the joint shear relation in the two directions is calibrated from the results to provide better analysis. An analytical model was used to simulate the seismic behaviour of the joints with the help of Ruaumoko software. Alternative strength degradation curves corresponding to different reinforcement detailing of beam-column joint unit were proposed based on the test results.

In 1968 a relatively small gas exposition on the 18th floor of the Ronan Point tower building resulted in the partial collapse of the structure. This event highlighted that progress collapse may occur to structures under an accidental loading event. Other events, including the bombing of the Murrah federal building in 1993 in Oklahoma, have resulted in the common design requirement that a structure be capable of surviving the removal of a load bearing element. This approach, often referred to as the sudden column loss scenario, effectively ignores the cause of the damage and focuses on the structure’s response afterwards. The refinement of the analysis varies, with options to include the nonlinear and dynamic behaviours associated with extreme events, or to use simplified linear and static models with factors included to account for the full behaviour. Previous research into progressive collapse has highlighted that providing ductility in the connections, and avoiding brittle failures, is important in ensuring the structure maintains integrity after a column loss event. However, the majority of this work has been focused on the behaviour of steel and Reinforced Concrete (RC) frame structures. As flat slab construction is a popular method for many structures, due to the flexibility it offers for layouts and its low storey heights, it is an important to consider flat slab behaviour in more detail. Furthermore, slab elements behave differently to frame structures due to the Alternative Load Paths (ALPs) that can develop after a column loss via two-dimensional bending mechanisms. Additionally, punching shear failure is a known issue due to the thin section depths. This work addresses the issue of the response of RC flat slab structures after a sudden column loss. As previous case studies have demonstrated that brittle failures may lead to progressive collapse of such structures, a complete understanding of the response is required. The nonlinear behaviour of a slab structure, due to both material and geometric factors, is investigated to determine the additional capacity available beyond the usual design limits. Additionally, the dynamic factors involved, primarily due to inertial effects, are also considered. To achieve this, experimental and numerical studies were conducted. A series of 1/3 scale models of slab substructures were constructed to replicate column loss events. Two types of tests were conducted, a static push down test with a support removed and a sudden dynamic column removal case. Displacements, strains and support reactions were recorded throughout, along with cracking patterns. For the dynamic tests a high speed camera was used to obtain the deflection response in the short time period after removal and to observe the formation of cracks. Comparisons between the two cases allowed determination of the dynamic effects on the response of the system. The experimental programme was then replicated using a Finite Element (FE) model. The results taken from the experimental case were used to validate the material and modelling assumptions made during the numerical simulations. This validated model was finally used to investigate a wider range of variables and assess the response of typical structural arrangements, with particular focus on the nonlinear and dynamic factors involved after a sudden column loss. The experimental and numeral investigations demonstrated that after the loss of a column, flat slab structures can maintain integrity due to a change in the load paths away from the removal location. Although in some cases a large amount of flexural damage to the concrete and reinforcement occurred, such effects did not lead to complete failure. However, during the experimental programme some punching shear failures occurred, usually at the corner column locations. From the numerical analysis, shear forces of over twice the fully supported condition occurred as a result of removing a column, which may exceed the designed capacity. Comparisons between a static and dynamic analysis provides information into a suitable Dynamic Amplification Factor (DAF) for use with simplified modelling approaches. Based on the range of structures considered, the maximum increase in deflections as a result of a sudden removal was 1.62 times the static case, this is less than the commonly used factor of 2.0. Additionally, this factor reduces as the nonlinearity increases due to further damage, with a smallest DAF calculated at 1.39. This factor can be reduced further if the column is not removed instantaneously. Finally, the material strengthening effect, due to high strain rates, was considered with the conclusion that as such effects only make a limited increase in the capacity of the slab and may be conservatively ignored. In conclusion, RC flat slab structures are capable of resisting progressive collapse after the loss of a column. This is primarily due to their ability to develop ALPs. However, while flexural damage is usually fairly minimal, progressive punching shear failure is a critical design condition as it may result in a complete collapse. Furthermore, the inertial effects involved after a sudden removal can increase the damage sustained, although current design methods may be over conservative.
