Abstract (sommario):
The state of Michigan occupies an area between the Great Plains and the northeastern United States, bordering four Great Lakes, with diverse biogeographical regions. Michigan also has the second most diverse agriculture in the country, with many crops that depend on bees for pollination. This unique combination provides a wide range of opportunities for bees to persist, yet there is no current published checklist of these important insects. This study was conducted to provide the first annotated checklist of the bee (Apoidea: Anthophila) fauna of Michigan, summarizing aspects of their taxonomy and behavior and to provide provisional conservation assessment. The list was compiled from a critical review of published literature, museum specimens, and database records, supplemented by new collections. In total, 465 species are included in the checklist, including 38 new records, however evidence for 13 species is poor, several more species require taxonomic revision, and the presence of additional species is expected. The exotic megachilid species Megachile apicalis Spinola, M. pusilla Pérez (=concinna Smith, auct.) and Osmia taurus Smith are reported from Michigan for the first time. New state records of native species include Anthidium tenuiflorae Cockerell and Nomada alpha alpha Cockerell, both previously undocumented from eastern North America, and Nomada sphaerogaster Cockerell, which has rarely been recognized. The taxonomy of some bee species is clarified by the formal publication of 11 new synonymies (some previously reported online or in manuscripts). The following list cites junior synonyms first followed by the valid name: Andrena chippewaensis Mitchell 1960 = A. (Simandrena) wheeleri Graenicher 1904; Osmia hendersoni Cockerell 1907 = O. (Melanosmia) tarsata Provancher 1888; Osmia michiganensis Mitchell 1962 = O. (M.) subarctica Cockerell 1912 (new status, removed from synonymy with O. (M.) tersula Cockerell 1912); Sphecodes persimilis Lovell and Cockerell 1907 = S. davisii Robertson 1897; Sphecodes knetschi Cockerell 1898 = S. dichrous Smith 1853; Sphecodes carolinus Mitchell 1956 = S. coronus Mitchell 1956; Sphecodes stygius Robertson 1893 = S. mandibularis Cresson 1872; Sphecodes prostygius Mitchell 1960 = S. fattigi Mitchell 1956; Stelis vernalis Mitchell 1962 = S. coarctatus Crawford 1916; and Stelis michiganensis Mitchell 1962 = S. foederalis Smith 1854. Poorly known Andrena (Cnemidandrena) are discussed, including A. parnassiae Cockerell, a new state record, A. robervalensis Mitchell, and the extralimital A. runcinatae Cockerell. Of these, only A. robervalensis was considered in the subgeneric revision, but we recognize all three as valid species pending further study. Nomada binotata (Robertson 1903) and N. quadrimaculata (Robertson 1903) are removed from synonymy with N. ovata (Robertson 1903), based on examination of the lectotypes. A new species, Triepeolus eliseae Rightmyer, the eastern representative of the verbesinae species group, is described. A putative undescribed species, Osmia aff. trevoris, is documented, but requires additional study for its status to be fully resolved. A rich bee fauna is documented that includes geographically-restricted species, rare and regionally-declining species, and economically-important species, providing information for ongoing conservation planning and future analysis of trends in bee populations.

Abstract (sommario):
From the 1881 incorporation of Los Angeles' first telephone company, telecommunications spread rapidly in the city and its surrounding region. This article details the proliferation of telephony, and its role in the region's rapid growth and in the formation of region-wide economic networks. Conversely, Pomona, 30 miles from Los Angeles, serves as an example of how local telephone systems could also facilitate sub-regional economic blocs. The history of the telephone, this article argues, is essential to understanding the L.A. region's multi-nucleated development and its economic structure.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT The CAMP reaction was first described by Christie et al. (R. Christie, N. E. Atkins, and E. Munch-Petersen, Aust. J. Exp. Biol. 22:197-200, 1944) as the synergistic lysis of sheep red blood cells by Staphylococcus aureus sphingomyelinase and CAMP factor (cohemolysin), a secreted protein from group B streptococci. We observed a CAMP-like reaction when Bartonella henselae was grown in close proximity to S. aureus on 5% sheep blood agar. This study describes the cloning, sequencing, and characterization of a CAMP-like factor autotransporter gene (cfa) from B. henselae. A cosmid library of B. henselae ATCC 49793 was constructed using SuperCos1 in Escherichia coli XL1-Blue MR. Cosmids were screened for the CAMP reaction, and a quantitative cohemolysis microtiter assay was developed using purified sphingomyelinase. Cosmid clones with the strongest cohemolytic reaction had similar restriction enzyme patterns. A DNA fragment that expressed the cohemolysin determinant was subcloned in a 7,200-bp StuI-BamHI fragment which contained a 6,024-bp open reading frame. The deduced amino acid sequence showed homology to the family of autotransporters. The autotransporters are a group of proteins that mediate their own export through the outer membrane. They contain an N-terminal passenger region, the α-domain, and a C-terminal transporter region, the β-domain. The α-domain contained four, nearly identical 42-amino-acid repeats and showed homology to the family of RTX (repeat in toxin) hemolysins. The concentrated supernatant of the recombinant strain expressed a protein with a molecular mass of 180 kDa on sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis consistent with the calculated molecular weight of the secreted α-domain. In conclusion, we have characterized a novel secreted cohemolysin autotransporter protein of B. henselae.

Walker, Cherry L. "The volcanic history and geochemical evolution of the Hveragerði Region, S. W. Iceland". Thesis, Durham University, 1992. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/5610/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The Hveragerði Region is situated at the Hengill Triple junction, SW Iceland, where there are three volcanic systems. The crust in the area is constructed from both fissure (elongate) and lava shield (conical) eruptive units. Hengill is the presently active spreading zone with the Hengill Central Volcano, whereas the Hveragerði region is inactive with the extinct Grensdalur Central Volcano. Recent geophysical research indicates the presence of high and low density volumes within the upper 5 km of the crust in this area. The location of the density anomalies coincides with surface geological features, such as Recent lava shields, and the extinct and active central volcanoes. A geological map of the Hveragerði Volcanic System has been constructed, and approximately 450 basaltic samples have been examined petrographically and analysed for whole- rock, volcanic glass and mineral chemical data from this region. Observations from these data, coupled with the geological and geophysical observations, suggest that the lava shields are fed straight from the base of the crust, whereas fissure eruptions originate from shallow crustal reservoirs The character of the crustal reservoir has been highly variable in the past 1 Ma, and has varied from a melt-dominated reservoir, to a crystal mush-dominated one. Each lava shield is compositionally distinct and is thought to preserve the mantle-melting signature. The compositional variation amongst the lava shields suggests that instantaneous melts are able to segregate from the mantle without complete mixing with accumulated melts from the entire length of the melting column. The depleted instantaneous melts from the crest and top of the melting column will either form picritic lava shields or they may interact with more fractionated crustal reservoirs and undergo quench crystallisation of megacrystic plagioclase (An 80-90). These crystals with associated pyroxene and olivine become flototion cumulates. There are episodes within the stratigraphy where off-axis lava shield and highly megacrystic fissure eruptions dominate, and such periods may represent periods of low magma supply. On the submerged mid-ocean ridges, linear and conical features are also observed, and these may be analogous to the fissure and lava shields, respectively. The basalt types reported here from the Hveragerdi region have also been reported off-shore, and they may therefore represent basalts derived from similar magmatic processes in a similar magmatic plumbing system. However, an initial observation of the relationship of 12 dredged basalts from 63˚ 10'N on the Reykjanes Ridge suggests that this is not the case at this locality.

Abstract (sommario):
This is the story of an American region. It is the story of a place long controlled by the Osages, claimed by the French, and for decades under the jurisdiction of the Spanish Crown. It was a place that became the first dumping ground for Native Americans who were pressured out of their ancestral homelands and pushed across the Mississippi River, a place traversed by thousands of Cherokees on the last leg of their Trail of Tears. It was a destination for Tennesseans, Kentuckians, Virginians, and Carolinians in ox carts and covered wagons. It was a launching point for forty-niners and cattle drives to the western coast. It was a place that hosted the early business ventures of the men who established the Rocky Mountain fur trade. It was the place where General Ulysses S. Grant received his first star. It was home to lead miners and iron mongers, to cowboys and slaves, to circuit riders and trappers, dirt farmers and counterfeiters. It was the last hunting ground of Daniel Boone. It was home to industrialist Moses Austin and his son, Stephen F., the “Father of Texas.” It was the birthplace and childhood home of African American scientist and inventor George Washington Carver. It was home to Hermann Jaeger, a Swiss immigrant credited with saving the European wine industry in the nineteenth century. It was the site of “Wild Bill” Hickok’s first shootout and Jesse James’s first train robbery. It was where a teenage Charlie Parker honed his licks on the alto sax. It is now the home of the world’s largest retail corporation, the nation’s leading meat-producing company, and one of the world’s finest collections of American art....

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The Mediterranean region encompasses countries that surround Mediterranean Sea. Due to its position at the intersection of Eurasia and Africa it has often been a route of human migrations during history, which contributed to its high biodiversity. People living in this area had been exposed to the episodes of natural selection that led to the establishment of specific genetic variations, for which is thought to carry a certain adaptation. Some recent studies have shown that genetic adaptations are probably related to the immune defense against infectious pathogens. One of the most recognizable disease of the region is familial Mediterranean fever (FMF), a prototype of a monogenic autoinflammatory disease. FMF is predisposed by the mutations in the Mediterranean fever (MEFV) gene that encodes inflammasome regulatory protein - pyrin. Specific variations of several other genes have been proposed to confer a protection against Plasmodium malariae parasite. Some of these are hemoglobin S (HbS), thalassemia, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, ovalocytosis, and mutation in the Duffy antigen (FY). In this chapter we will summarize important genetics and pathogenesis features of diseases commonly encountered in the Mediterranean region with a short discussion of potential adaptations that they may carry.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract-Sicyopterus japonicus is unique because it is the only temperate amphidromous goby of the subfamily Sicydiinae. Life history and migration characteristics of S. japonicus, including seasonal changes of condition factor, spawning season, hatching size, oceanic larval duration, recruitment season, and size at recruitment, were examined in the temperate region of western Japan and were compared with those of other Sicydiinae species, all of which inhabit the tropics and subtropics. The condition factor varied seasonally, with peaks in July and November. The spawning season of S. japonicus ranged from July to September, with a peak in July-August, and was shorter than that of other species that normally spawn from 7 to 12 months/year. The hatching size (1.5 mm total length) was similar to other Sicydiinae, but oceanic larval duration (range: 173-253 d) was longer than most other species. The long larval duration and single annual reproduction period suggest that it is adapted to longdistance oceanic dispersal. The recruitment season (about 4 months) is the shortest known among the Sicydiinae, but its size at river entry (mean: 26.3 mm standard length) was similar to other species. The shorter reproductive and recruitment seasons for S. japonicus probably indicate that its migration strategy is determined by seasonal changes in the temperate region. Sicydiinae species have larger clutch sizes and smaller hatching sizes compared to other temperate amphidromous families such as the Galaxiidae, Osmeridae, and Cottidae. Sicydiinae species have no nondiadromous forms, suggesting that they may have a migration strategy with a high oceanic dependency that facilitates oceanic dispersion.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter traces the effects of Thatcherism on Hines’s work, and on the region and communities he depicts. His screenplay for the 1981 film Looks and Smiles takes an art-cinematic form to explore the pressures of the era’s unemployment on young people, in his fourth and final collaboration with Ken Loach, while the unproduced play Fun City offers a blackly comic view of the era’s schooling. Unfinished Business (1983) examines the possibilities of social freedom for women, while 1984’s Threads is an exceptionally bleak documentary drama about the effects of nuclear war. Tracing the screenplay’s archival history reveals the detail of Hines’s aesthetic and political practice.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter examines how the people of Kansas retreated into a quiet centrist conservatism that was relatively more bipartisan and apolitical than would have been expected, especially in a state with such a long Republican history. The conservatism of the period included rare hints of the more aggressive political and religious movements that were to brand the region as part of the red state Middle West in later decades. The chapter first considers the increasing feeling of political isolation in Kansas that was evident by the end of Franklin D. Roosevelt's second term. It then looks at the rise of Harry S. Truman as U.S. president after Roosevelt's death on April 12, 1945, along with Kansans' renewed emphasis on homes, hometowns, and hometown religion as the essential ingredients of Middle West life. It also discusses the religious situation in Kansas during the administration of Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter focuses on the founding and maintenance of southern authoritarian enclaves during the period 1890–1940. It interprets the post-1890s South as a set of stable enclaves of authoritarian rule, in contrast to the common view that it was a region of “herrenvolk” democracy—democracy for whites but not for blacks. The chapter first provides an overview of the birth of southern enclaves, tracing the history of the South before the Civil War to Reconstruction and enclave foundings. It then considers the project of southern “democracy,” black politics under enclave rule, and the South's democratization between 1944 and 1972. It also examines interventions that posed challenges to all southern enclaves, including the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Brown v. Board of Education, President Harry S. Truman and the National Democratic Party's embrace of racial equality, and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Abstract (sommario):
The Virgin Mary as such cannot be examined scientifically. We can, however, examine her ‘apparitions’ in the world, as well as the innumerable variants of Marian devotion and cult. This volume focuses on her manifestations in the post-Communist region with some geographical spillovers. It is either because post-Communist transformation concerned not only the former socialist countries, but also had an impact on the entire European region and was part of the overall post-modern and post-Communist reconfiguration of the European area. Another factor is that Marian worship is not controlled by political borders of present-day nation states. It has a wider transnational potential and impact. Nevertheless, we focused our viewfinder primarily on the post-Communist region, as we believe that thanks to its geographical and symbolic location and economic position in Europe, as well as its historical roots and traditions and common Communist history and heritage, it not only shows different traits of modernity compared to ‘Western Europe’, but we also face specific features and forms of worshipping of the Virgin Mary. We therefore decided to present in this volume the traces of the Virgin Mary by means of more in-depth analyses from selected countries of the post-socialist region. By means of this publication, we can observe how the Virgin Mary is manifested in the faces of seers and pilgrims and how audio-visual means are becoming a direct part of Marian apparitions in Germany in the modern era (H. Knoblauch and S. Petschke); how she speaks through the mouth of a blind Roma woman and pacifies the ethnic and religious tensions between various groups in Romania (L. Peti); how she attributes meaning to meaningless places on the map by reallocating her presence through the geo- graphical and time distribution of Marian dedications in Slovakia (J. Majo); how, after the fall of Communism, she revitalises the old places of her cult with new power, bringing together traditional and non-traditional forms of worship in the secular Czech Lands (M. Holubová); how her messages are spread on the websites of new non-traditional Marian movements and how their apocalyptical warnings are being updated and localised into the specific national environment in Czechia (V. Tutr); how she addresses the readers of Marian literature differently on the shelves of book- stores in Slovakia and Austria (R. Kečka); but also how the Virgin Mary absorbs ultra-modern millennial and spiritualistic concepts of Mother Earth and Mother of the Universe, becoming the speak- er of the great unified Hungarian nation (J. Kis-Halas); how she is becoming the re-discovered herald of Serbian national identity (A. Pavićević); how she absorbs the local forms of faith and folk Christianity in modern era and is thus the manifestation of grass- root Christianity and local religious culture in Bulgaria (V. Baeva and A. Georgieva); and how the path from a private to an officially recognised apparition depends not only on the Virgin Mary and the seer, but also on the overall constellation of the audience and the ability to offer a religious ready-made event (T. Zachar Podolinská and L. Peti). This publication observes the current diversity of the forms of Marian devotion in post-Communist countries through different national and geographically defined contours and, in particular, the ability of the Virgin Mary to satisfy the hunger for modern spirituality and authentic religiousness, give voice to unofficial and popular religions, revitalise and redefine old places of cult and add new ones, appease war conflicts, speak out on behalf of nations and marginalised ethnic groups, and guard national and conservative values. The post-modern and post-Communist Mary thus restores ruptured traditions with love and enchants the violently atheised European region with new miracles and apparitions, regardless of whether top Church and state representatives like it or not.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter presents the results obtained by the International Institute Galileo Galilei (IIGG), a research unit of Fundaringenio, within the framework of the research project developed in 2009 that consists of the design of a basic model of “e-culture system” that can promote and disseminate world cultures, including Santiago del Esteros`s culture (the culture of a northwestern region of Argentina). Culture as a complex phenomenon is studied from the Systemic Paradigm, which is optimized by the transdisciplinary features that allow the concurrence of other complementary perspectives. The methodic process consists of the systemic modelling process and the retroprospective methodology. This process begins with the conception of the Meta Model to be achieved; the Existed Model is built in relation to its past and history. After that, the Existing Model is developed in relation to its present. Each one corresponding to the different scenarios of the events, and they are the basis of the features of “santiagueñidad.” From these, an Operative Model is designed and adapted. The authors present the validation of an operative model, through analogy simulation using the technique of syntegration for the processing of empirical evidence, collected from a statistical sample selected for this purpose. The results confirm the selected features of “santiagueña” culture and the generation of a more general and comprehensive model that could be of value to other cultures and instrumental applications such as in large organizations or companies.

Abstract (sommario):
The Armenian emigrated to the Caucasus in XIX century always made unreasonable territorial claims and provoked conflicts in the region. Investigations based on the facts and arguments make it possible to determine specific features of some problems and processes and understand the essence. Unreasonable territory claims by Armenia caused the loss of 20% of Azerbaijan territory and the war with Azerbaijan in 90`s of last century. Azerbaijan army freed its territory occupated by Armenia despite of Armenian`s new territory claims and millitary retreats.

Abstract (sommario):
Aims: Extra ovarian granulosa cell tumor (GCT) is extremely rare tumor, assumed to arise from the ectopic gonadal tissue along the embryonal route of the genital ridge. A case of extra ovarian granulosa cell tumor of omentum in a 69 year old female presented here. Materials and Methods: A 69 years old postmenopausal, hypertensive female presented with complaints of pain in right lumber and iliac region of one month duration. Pain was off and on and intermittent. The patient had a history of hysterectomy 12 years ago for fibroid uterus. Results: Ultrasound examination of abdomen showed a hypoechoic lesion of size 78.1 mm x 57.3 mm in right iliac fossa with mild thickening of surrounding omentum. Another hypoechoic lesion of size 36.7 mm x 22.9 mm was seen in retroperitoneal region in supero-medial aspect of right kidney. CECT abdomen showed heterogeneously enhanced nodular lesion of size 6.6 x 6.8 cm in right lumbar region, mild thickening of surrounded omentum also seen however there was no evidence of infiltration to bowel loop seen. Uterus was not visualized. PET CT whole body revealed mildly metabolically active enlarged nodes in the bilateral level ib an ii, metabolically active large lobulated heterogeneously enhancing soft tissue density lesion in right lumbar region with non enhancing areas of necrosis. The lesion is closely abutting the anterior abdominal wall musculature antero laterally and small bowel loop medially surrounding mesenty shows increased vascularity and haziness. Colonoscopy findings were normal. Trucut biopsy of mass right lumbar region was positive for malignancy likely Round cell Sarcoma. A provisional diagnosis of retroperitoneal sarcoma of right lumbar region was made. She underwent exploratory laparotomy with excision of tumor. As per Operative findings there was approximately 8 x 7 cm, firm, omental mass present right to midline, arising from under surface of greater omentum. Ovaries were normal. Gross examination of omental mass showed nodular mass measuring 8 x 5 x 6 cm. External surface was multinodular and cut surface was grey brown to grey yellow with solid cystic areas and areas of necrosis. Microscopic examination of specimen showed Extraovarian Adult granulosa cell tumor/metastasis from occult granulose cell tumor. On IHC Vimentin, CK, SMA, Inhibin were positive, Ki67:15%, ER/PR were also positive and are negative for calretinin, thromobomodulin. Extensive necrosis was seen. After that she underwent rexploration and total omenectomy. HPE showed fat necrosis in omentum. All investigation showed no evidence of tumor in ovaries and at any other primary site then the patient finally diagnosed as having Granulosa cell tumor involving only omentum post op stage III C. Then patient was given six courses of chemotherapy with Inj Paclitaxel and Inj Carboplatin three weekly. Now patient is on regular follow up and disease free. Conclusion: Extra ovarian adult granulosa cell tumor of omentum is rare tumor. Multimodal treatment approaches including surgery, multi-agent chemotherapy may provide a survival benefit for patients.

Abstract (sommario):
Developments of oil and gas reservoirs in South China Sea are presently accelerated, to cope with the significant increase in energy demand from the mainland. Pipe-in-Pipe (PIP) flowline systems have been widely employed in this region and are continuously being considered for further developments. This is due to its significant thermal insulation capacity to deal with the High Pressure and High Temperature (HPHT) issue. However, the methods in industry for design of PIP systems usually have two side extremes. Simplified analytical approach may lack of accuracy and detailed FE analysis always brings considerably sophisticated modelling and post-processing tasks. To overcome this situation, COTEC Offshore Solutions, together with its mother company, China Offshore Oil Engineering Company, have developed a cost-effective, beam elements based, 3D simulation model using ABAQUS, a general purpose finite element analysis (FEA) package. The mode allows complicated structures of PIP system to be represented in an effective way and adopts a representation of stinger for S-lay installation analysis. A full-history time-dominate analysis from installation to operation is performed in one model, rather than the commonly used ‘snapshot’ analysis. In this study, a simplified modeling guidance of PIP components have been suggested. On the basis of the guidance, a novel 3D beam-elements based model has been produced to accurately represent complex PIP structural behaviors, but with minimum increase in modeling complexity. The analysis is carried out on the time-domain basis, which permits the full strain and stress history of the installation and operation to be observed and the most onerous time-point during the full installation and operation to be captured.

Abstract (sommario):
The epitope of a mouse monoclonal AB (9.9) which detects a Factor IX (F.IX) polymorphism in the plasma of normal persons (PNAS 82:3839, 1985) has been related to not more than 6 AA residues of F.IX by recombinant DNA technology. The same 6 residues define Smith’s polymorphic epitope (Am. J. Human Genet. 37:688, 1985 and in press). This region of F.IX contains the alanine:threonine dimorphism at residue 148 first suggested by McGraw et al. (PNAS 82: 2847, 1985) and established by Winship and Brownlee with synthetic DNA oligomers (Lancet in press). Using synthetic DNA probes, we have found that the DNA difference between positive and negative reactors to 9.9 is whether base pair 20422, the first pair in the codon for residue 148, is A:T or G:C. We can conclude that 9.9 reacts with F.IX containing threonine but not alanine at position 148.The F.IX immunologic polymorphism-whose epitope we are referring to as “Malmo”-is, not surprisingly, in strong linkage disequilibrium with two F.IX DNA polymorphisms, TaqI and Xmnl. The highest frequency of the rarer Malmo allele in 6 disparate ethnic groups was in Swedes (32%); a lower frequency (14%) was seen in White Americans whose ancestors came overwhelmingly from the Celtic regions of the British Isles; it was at very low frequency or absent in Black Americans, East Indians, Chinese and Malays. A maximum frequency in Swedes and absence in Africans and Orientals suggest that the transition from A:T to G:C occurred in Scandinavia and spread from there. The history of Europe and America plus the geographical distribution of the rare allele lead us to suggest that this locus might be designated: “the Viking gene”.
