Abstract (sommario):
Zeitschrift für Kristallographie, Angewandte Chemie, The New York Times, The Sun, El Pais, La Republica, Le Monde, Shanghai Daily, and many more journals and newspapers are printed with Pigment Red 57:1. P.R.57:1 (C18H12CaN2O6S · n H2O, n = 0,1,3) is the most important organic red pigment with a production of more than 50,000 tons per year and an annual sales volume of more than 200 million Euro.[1] In printing ink the pigment is not dissolved, but finely dispersed. Consequently its solid-state properties are maintained. Like most pigments, P.R.57:1 occurs in different crystal phases with different colours. Upon synthesis a trihydrate is formed. Drying at 500C generates a monohydrate with magenta shade, which is used for printing inks. The monohydrate is thermally stable up to temperatures higher than 1900C before it releases water to yield a hygroscopic anhydrous phase with dull dark magenta shade. For all three phases the growth of single crystals is impeded by the low solubility of the pigment in most media. The crystal structures of all three forms were determined from in-house X-ray powder data.[2] The structures were solved by real-space methods with simulated annealing. Subsequently a Rietveld refinement with restraints on bond lengths, bond angles and planar groups was performed. All three phases crystallize in space-group type P21/c, Z = 4. The trihydrate and the monohydrate show eightfold coordination of the Ca ions, the anhydrate a sevenfold one. Apparently the increasing anion-cation interactions lead to the observed colour shift. The arrangement of cations and anions is similar in all three forms. The crystal structures exhibit double layers, one polar, one nonpolar. The polar layer consists of water molecules, calcium ions, sulfonate, keto and carboxylate groups, held together mostly by hydrogen bonds and Coulomb interactions. The nonpolar layer contains naphthalene and toluene moieties.

Abstract (sommario):
A different name than English literature, ‘Anglo-Indian Literature’, was given to the body of literature in English that emerged on account of the British interaction with India unlike the case with their interaction with America or Australia or New Zealand. Even the Indians’ contributions (translations as well as creative pieces in English) were classed under the caption ‘Anglo-Indian’ initially but later a different name, ‘Indo-Anglian’, was conceived for the growing variety and volume of writings in English by the Indians. However, unlike the former the latter has not found a favour with the compilers of English dictionaries. With the passage of time the fine line of demarcation drawn on the basis of subject matter and author’s point of view has disappeared and currently even Anglo-Indians’ writings are classed as ‘Indo-Anglian’. Besides contemplating on various connotations of the term ‘Indo-Anglian’ the article discusses the related issues such as: the etymology of the term, fixing the name of its coiner and the date of its first use. In contrast to the opinions of the historians and critics like K R S Iyengar, G P Sarma, M K Naik, Daniela Rogobete, Sachidananda Mohanty, Dilip Chatterjee and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak it has been brought to light that the term ‘Indo-Anglian’ was first used in 1880 by James Payn to refer to the Indians’ writings in English rather pejoratively. However, Iyengar used it in a positive sense though he himself gave it up soon. The reasons for the wide acceptance of the term, sometimes also for the authors of the sub-continent, by the members of academia all over the world, despite its rejection by Sahitya Akademi (the national body of letters in India), have also been contemplated on. Abstract (sommario):
A high quality finished plant from each of 22 cultivars was displayed at a poinsettia [Euphorbia pulcherrima Willd. ex Klotzsch] open house at Tennessee State University in Dec. 2004. The cultivars represented the range of flower colors, flower traits, and plant vigor available through the major suppliers Dummen USA, Ecke, Fischer, and Oglevee. Attendees of the open house completed a written survey (n = 101) in which they were asked to rate their cultivar preferences. Cultivars (identified only by an alphabetic letter) were rated by respondents on a Likert-type scale (1 = strongly dislike to 5 = strongly like). Highly rated cultivars (mean ≥4) included `Freedom Red', `Premium Red', `Nutcracker White', `Early Orion', `Cortez Electric Fire', and the new cultivars `Visions of Grandeur' and `Kris Krinkle'. Cultivars were also rated on the price range potential consumers were willing to pay. Respondents were willing to pay the most to purchase `Visions of Grandeur', which is a vigorous cultivar with large, pillowy, peach-colored bracts. Overall, traditional red cultivars and large, non-red cultivars were preferred. Most of the respondents indicated that they purchased red plants, and color was the most important selection criterion. Results suggest that although most consumers prefer traditional red cultivars, women prefer some alternative inflorescence colors and unique bract shapes more than men.

Abstract (sommario):
The diet of the Eastern Barn Owl Tyto javanica was investigated by examination of two samples of pellets (n = 11 and 39), pellet debris and prey remains from: (1) an occupied nest with fledgling in May 2009, and (2) an Owl’s winter roost in August 2009 near Tamworth in the grain belt of New South Wales. The breeding diet consisted, by number, of 91% mammals (90% rodents, including 87% House Mice Mus musculus) and 9% common farmland birds (n = 116 food items). The winter diet consisted of 99% House Mice and 1% bird (n = 188 food items). The fledgling Owl was killed when it failed to flush from its nest hollow as the tree was being felled, during approved clearing of the now Critically Endangered White Box–Yellow Box–Blakely’s Red Gum Grassy Woodland and Derived Native Grassland. Given the dependence of the Barn Owl on House Mice, and the ongoing clearing of hollow trees, we note the potential for (a) secondary poisoning of owls by rodenticides, especially during plagues of the invasive House Mouse in the grain belt, and (b) the Barn Owl’s long-term decline in abundance in New South Wales.

Abstract (sommario):
SUMMARYSambar deer (n = 8) and red deer (n = 8) fawns were successfully artificially reared to 70 days of age, using ewe milk replacer, at Flock House Agricultural Centre, New Zealand, during 1991. Sambar deer fawns had a lower overall milk consumption than red deer fawns (312 v. 359 g DM/day; P < 0·05), and showed an earlier peak in milk consumption, a faster rate of decline and earlier self weaning. Birth weight as a proportion of dam liveweight was lower for sambar than for red deer, but liveweight gains to weaning (347 v. 330 g/day) and 70 day weaning weights (300 v. 30·4 kg) were similar. The age at which deer commenced a range of activities, including eating forage and ruminating, was similar for both species, except that jumping activities commenced 5 days later in sambar than in red deer (P < 0·01). Following milk feeding, sambar fawns were less active than red deer fawns. It was concluded that sambar deer fawns can be successfully artificially reared using ewe milk replacer, but that extra precautions are needed to avoid scouring and abomasal bloat, which were more prevalent in sambar than in red deer fawns.

Abstract (sommario):
Objective: The purpose was to identify community characteristics that contribute to reductions in readmission rates and reimbursement penalties for hospital systems in upstate New York. Methods: Hospitals in upstate NY were selected (N = 94). Using an ex post facto design and the ecological model, community characteristics of hospital systems were analyzed and coded. Independent t-tests, ANOVA, and Pearson Correlation tests were conducted. Results: Characteristicscorrelated with reduced hospital readmission rates and reimbursement penalties included hospitals (1) with critical access status; (2) located in counties with a better county health rank; and (3) located in a primary care shortage area that utilized house calls. Discussion: Implications include supporting policies that increase access to services, improve formulas for reimbursement, and encourage innovation in care delivery models. Future research efforts should focus on house calls in primary care shortage areas. Keywords: readmission rates, ecological model, house calls, community health DOI: https://doi.org/10.14574/ojrnhc.v21i1.638

Abstract (sommario):
Dina Kaminskaya was a defense lawyer of Soviet dissidents and participated in the most famous political trials of the 1960s. She acted as a defense lawyer for the members of the human rights movement in the Soviet Union, the creators and disseminators of samizdat, those who organized protests and demonstrations, including the one on the Red Square in Moscow in August 1968. Leaving the USSR under the threat of arrest in 1977, in exile, she wrote a memoir, Attorney’s notes, which was published in New York by the Chronicle-Press publishing house in 1984. Not only is the Soviet political judicial system with its ideological tricks vividly represented in this book, but also the portraits of those dissidents whom she knew personally and worked for as a lawyer.

Abstract (sommario):
We determined responses of red spruce ( Picea rubens Sarg.) – balsam fir ( Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) forests to 6 years of nitrogen (N), calcium (Ca), and N + Ca treatments (100, 160, and 260 kg·ha–1·year–1 of N, Ca, and N + Ca, respectively) in New York (NY) and New Hampshire (NH). Forest responses to Ca treatments were also determined in Vermont (VT). Nitrogen treatments increased aboveground net primary production (ANPP) by 33% and 25% above controls in NY and NH, respectively. Similarly, N + Ca treatments increased ANPP by 27% and 28% in NY and NH, respectively. Calcium treatments increased ANPP by 25% and 21% above controls in NY and VT. Calcium treatment did not increase ANPP in NH, suggesting N, but not Ca limitation. Leaf-litter quantity and quality, and soil C and N storage were greater in treated than in control plots. Fine-root mass and production did not differ among treatments. Trees, therefore, assimilated more soil nutrients without increasing root growth in treated plots. Red spruce ANPP, however, declined or remained unchanged in response to N and Ca additions. The equivalent of 68–102 years of anthropogenic N addition to soils changed forest species composition without decreasing ANPP, and Ca additions did not prevent this change.

Abstract (sommario):
As in many sexually dichromatic species in which males are brightly colored, female House Finches (Carpodacus mexicanus) show a subdued expression of the same coloration as males. I quantified the carotenoid plumage coloration of females from the subspecies C. m. frontalis in Michigan, New York, Hawaii Island, and two sites in California, and from the subspecies C. m. griscomi in Guerrero, Mexico. The proportion of females with detectable carotenoid pigmentation differed significantly among populations, as did the median plumage brightness of colorful females. In Michigan, but not California, yearling females tended to be more colorful than older females. Among C. m. frontalis populations, there was a significant positive correlation between the plumage brightness of females and males, but in the C. m. griscomi population males were brightly colored while females were drab. In aviary experiments, females of all ages and from all populations converged on a similar plumage brightness after molt when fed a common diet. Moreover, females from all populations showed maximum color expression when provided with abundant red carotenoid pigments. These observations suggest that local and regional variation in the plumage brightness of females reflects local and regional variation in the availability of dietary carotenoid pigments and that female House Finches do not actively forage for carotenoids.

Abstract (sommario):
Ceratocystis fagacearum (T.W. Bretz) J. Hunt is considered to be the most destructive vascular pathogen of oaks (Fagaceae: Quercus spp.) in the eastern, north-central, and south-central United States. (1,2,4). All red oak species (subgenus Quercus: section Lobatae) are highly susceptible to C. fagacearum, and infected trees typically die within 3 months of first symptom expression. However, members of the white oak group (subgenus Quercus: section Quercus) are moderately to highly resistant to C. fagacearum and rarely die from oak wilt (1,3). In early August of 2008, we received branch samples taken from wilting red oaks (Q. rubra L.) growing in a residential neighborhood in Scotia, NY (Schenectady County). The endoconidial state of the oak wilt fungus, Thielaviopsis quercina (B.W. Henry) A.E. Paulin, T.C. Harr. & McNew, was consistently isolated from the xylem in the branches. The cultures were identified based on hyphal and conidial morphology on acidified potato dextrose agar (aPDA) as well as sequences of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) (GenBank Accession No. FJ347031) and large subunit (LSU) (GenBank Accession No. FJ347030) regions of nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA). The nucleotide identities for the ITS and LSU sequences were a precise match, 99 and 100%, to rDNA sequences (GenBank Accession Nos. AF043598 and AF222483, respectively) of other isolates of C. fagacearum. According to the homeowners at the site, 12 red oaks have died during the last 3 years, and each tree died within one growing season after oak wilt-like symptoms were noted. In a brief survey of nearby properties in late August of 2008, we found 12 additional trees that were either expressing crown symptoms of oak wilt (e.g., premature leaf casting, bronzing of leaf margins, and water-soaked leaves) or were standing dead and within close proximity (5 to 10 m) to symptomatic trees. Branch samples from four of the symptomatic trees revealed limited (spotted) or no vascular discoloration; however, C. fagacearum was isolated from each suspect tree on aPDA. Remnants of gray mycelial mats and associated pressure cushions were observed beneath the bark of one standing dead oak. The sweet fruit-like odor characteristic of the oak wilt fungus was immediately evident once the bark overlying the mats was removed. Prior to this discovery, the Susquehanna River in north-central Pennsylvania was considered to be the northeastern limit for oak wilt occurrence in the United States (2,4). To our knowledge, this is the first report of the fungus from New York and expands the known range of C. fagacearum to the northeast by at least 300 km, supporting the hypothesis that the range of this fungus continues to expand via animal vectors and/or human activities (2). An isolate of C. fagacearum from New York has been deposited at the Centraalbureau voor Schimmelcultures (CBS 123913). References: (1) D. N. Appel. Ann. Rev. Phytopathol. 33:103, 1995. (2) J. Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThe aim of the study was to assess the quality of carcasses and meat from selected native breeds and breeding lines of hens after using them for laying eggs in terms of their usefulness as raw material in traditional old polish cuisine. hens included in the programme for the protection of genetic resources were the object of this study. they belonged to the following breeds/breeding lines: greenleg partridge (Z-11), rhode Island red (r-11), new hampshire (n-11) and Barred rock (WJ-44) – 30 hens from each line. the hens were kept in a closed hen house under standard raising conditions. eight hens were selected from 56-week-old hens of each line which were subjected to analysis after being slaughtered. as a result of the research conducted, it was found that:– Among the hens under study, heavier layers, i.e. Barred rock (WJ-44), new hampshire (n-11) and rhode Island red (r-11), which are characterized by good muscling and dressing percentage similar to that of broiler chickens, proved to be most suitable for use as meat.– The meat from WJ-44 hens contained most cholesterol and least protein, and the meat from Z-11 birds had the least fat compared to the other lines.– At the end of the laying period, meat and broth from WJ-44, n-11 and r-11 hens obtained better sensory scores than those from the carcasses of Z-11 hens, which makes them an attractive raw material for traditional polish cuisine.

Abstract (sommario):
Objectives. To assess if historical redlining, the US government’s 1930s racially discriminatory grading of neighborhoods’ mortgage credit-worthiness, implemented via the federally sponsored Home Owners’ Loan Corporation (HOLC) color-coded maps, is associated with contemporary risk of preterm birth (< 37 weeks gestation). Methods. We analyzed 2013–2017 birth certificate data for all singleton births in New York City (n = 528 096) linked by maternal residence at time of birth to (1) HOLC grade and (2) current census tract social characteristics. Results. The proportion of preterm births ranged from 5.0% in grade A (“best”—green) to 7.3% in grade D (“hazardous”—red). The odds ratio for HOLC grade D versus A equaled 1.6 and remained significant (1.2; P < .05) in multilevel models adjusted for maternal sociodemographic characteristics and current census tract poverty, but was 1.07 (95% confidence interval = 0.92, 1.20) after adjustment for current census tract racialized economic segregation. Conclusions. Historical redlining may be a structural determinant of present-day risk of preterm birth. Public Health Implications. Policies for fair housing, economic development, and health equity should consider historical redlining’s impacts on present-day residential segregation and health outcomes.

Abstract (sommario):
Summary Feline sera were submitted to the Cornell Feline Health Center (n = 497) or to the New York State Diagnostic Laboratory (n = 1,565) for feline immunodeficiency virus (fiv) testing. Some sera (n = 166) were submitted for confirmation of previous fiv-positive results; 151 of these sera had been tested at the referring veterinary practice or laboratory, using an in-house elisa. Excluding the samples submitted for confirmation, a total of 173 samples (9.1%) were fiv-positive; 11.6% of the clinically ill or high-risk cats and 0.49% of the healthy, low risk cats were positive for fiv antibody. A commercially available elisa for detection of antibody to fiv was evaluated in relation to the immunofluorescent antibody (ifa) test and the immunoblot assay. The elisa was interpreted according to the manufacturer's instructions, with the ratio of sample optical density to positive control optical density (s/p) determining a positive or negative result. The elisa results based on the s/p interpretation were compared with a kinetics-based (kela) interpretation of the elisa. The kela values were reported as positive, negative, or equivocal. Using the immunoblot as the standard, elisa (s/p interpretation) had sensitivity of 0.93 and specificity of 0.98, whereas the ifa test had sensitivity of 0.95 and specificity of 0.98. However, the sensitivity and specificity of the elisa (s/p interpretation) were markedly reduced for sample results falling in the kela equivocal range, indicating that equivocal results were valid interpretations for some sera. A high number (22.5%) of the samples submitted for confirmation of a positive result from use of the in-house elisa were determined to be negative for fiv antibody. Operator error or incorrect interpretation of the in-house elisa were thought to be the cause of most of these false-positive test results.

Abstract (sommario):
Iris yellow spot virus (IYSV [family Bunyaviridae, genus Tospovirus]), a potentially devastating disease of onion vectored by onion thrips (Thrips tabaci Lindeman), has been reported from most states in the western United States where significant onion production occurs, with the most recent report from Texas (1). In June 2006, volunteer onion (Allium cepa) plants in Orleans County, New York (Elba muckland) were found to have symptoms indicative of IYSV infection. The scapes (seed stalks) of the volunteer onions found at the edge of a cull pile from a 2005 onion crop exhibited diamond-shaped lesions, each with a distinct green center and a double yellow border. Approximately 25 of 100 plants of red and yellow onion cultivars exhibited characteristic IYSV lesions. The cull pile was composed primarily of locally grown onions, although a few of the bulbs were grown from imported bare-root transplants imported from Arizona. Symptomatic plants tested positive for IYSV using IYSV-specific antiserum from Agdia Inc. (Elkhart, IN) in a double-antibody sandwich-ELISA. The presence of IYSV was verified by reverse transcription (RT)-PCR using primers derived from the small RNA of IYSV (S-RNA). The primers flanked the IYSV nucleocapsid (N) gene (5′-TAA AAC AAA CAT TCA AAC AA-3′ and 5′-CTC TTA AAC ACA TTT AAC AAG CAC-3′ (3). RT-PCR assays produced a PCR amplicon of expected size (approximately 1.2 kb) and the product was cloned and sequenced. Nucleotide sequence analysis confirmed the identity of the amplicon as that of the IYSV S-RNA. Sequence comparisons showed 95 to 98% identity with known IYSV N gene sequences available in GenBank. The virus is poorly transmitted to onion by mechanical inoculation and we did not have access to a noninfested colony of the onion thrips vector to transfer the virus from these samples to noninfected onions. No asymptomatic plants were tested. Among the onion-growing states in the eastern United States, IYSV has previously only been reported from Georgia (2). To our knowledge, this is the first report of IYSV in New York and the greater northeastern United States. The finding of this disease in New York confirms further spread of the virus within North America and the need for research to develop more effective management options to reduce the impact of IYSV on onion crops. Abstract (sommario):
AbstractIntroductionThe objective of this study was to determine if modification of the Simple Triage and Rapid Treatment (START) system by the addition of an Orange category, intermediate between the most critically injured (Red) and the non-critical, non-ambulatory injured (Yellow), would reduce over- and under-triage rates in a simulated mass-casualty incident (MCI) exercise.MethodsA computer-simulation exercise of identical presentations of an MCI scenario involving a 2-train collision, with 28 case scenarios, was provided for triaging to two groups: the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY; n = 1,347) using modified START, and the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) providers from the Eagles 2012 EMS conference (Lafayette, Louisiana USA; n = 110) using unmodified START. Percent correct by triage category was calculated for each group. Performance was then compared between the two EMS groups on the five cases where Orange was the correct answer under the modified START system.ResultsOverall, FDNY-EMS providers correctly triaged 91.2% of cases using FDNY-START whereas non-FDNY-Eagles providers correctly triaged 87.1% of cases using unmodified START. In analysis of the five Orange cases (chest pain or dyspnea without obvious trauma), FDNY-EMS performed significantly better using FDNY-START, correctly triaging 86.3% of cases (over-triage 1.5%; under-triage 12.2%), whereas the non-FDNY-Eagles group using unmodified START correctly triaged 81.5% of cases (over-triage 17.3%; under-triage 1.3%), a difference of 4.9% (95% CI, 1.5-8.2).ConclusionsThe FDNY-START system may allow providers to prioritize casualties using an intermediate category (Orange) more properly aligned to meet patient needs, and as such, may reduce the rates of over-triage compared with START. The FDNY-START system decreases the variability in patient sorting while maintaining high field utility without needing computer assistance or extensive retraining. Comparison of triage algorithms at actual MCIs is needed; however, initial feedback is promising, suggesting that FDNY-START can improve triage with minimal additional training and cost.ArshadFH, WilliamsA, AsaedaG, IsaacsD, KaufmanB, Ben-EliD, GonzalezD, FreeseJP, HillgardnerJ, WeakleyJ, HallCB, WebberMP, PrezantDJ. Abstract (sommario):
In the mid-Atlantic region, there is increasing interest in the use of intercropping strategies to establish cover crops in corn cropping systems. However, intercropping may be limited by potential injury to cover crops from residual herbicide programs. Field experiments were conducted from 2013 to 2015 at Pennsylvania, Maryland, and New York locations (n=8) to evaluate the effect of common residual corn herbicides on interseeded red clover and annual ryegrass. Cover crop establishment and response to herbicide treatments varied across sites and years.S-metolachlor, pyroxasulfone, pendimethalin, and dimethenamid-Preduced annual ryegrass biomass relative to the nontreated check, whereas annual ryegrass biomass in acetochlor treatments was no different compared with the nontreated check. The rank order of observed annual ryegrass biomass reduction among chloroacetamide herbicides wasS-metolachlor>pyroxasulfone>dimethenamid-P>acetochlor. Annual ryegrass biomass was not reduced by any of the broadleaf control herbicides. Mesotrione reduced red clover biomass 80% compared to the nontreated check. No differences in red clover biomass were observed between saflufenacil, rimsulfuron and atrazine treatments compared to the nontreated check. Red clover was not reduced by any of the grass control herbicides. This research suggests that annual ryegrass and red clover can be successfully interseeded in silt loam soils of Pennsylvania following use of several shorter-lived residual corn herbicides, but further research is needed in areas with soil types other than silt loam or outside of the mid-Atlantic cropping region.

Abstract (sommario):
Globally, sex workers have highlighted the harms that accompany anti-prostitution efforts advanced via anti-trafficking policy, and there is a growing body of social science research that has emerged documenting how anti-trafficking efforts contribute to carceral and sexual humanitarian interventions. Yet mounting evidence on the harms of anti-trafficking policies has done little to quell the passage of more laws, including policies aimed at stopping sexual exploitation facilitated by technology. The 2018 passage of the Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act (FOSTA) in the U.S. House of Representatives, and the corresponding Senate bill, the Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act (SESTA), is a case study in how efforts to curb sexual exploitation online actually heighten vulnerabilities for the people they purport to protect. Drawing on 34 months of ethnographic fieldwork and interviews with sex workers and trafficked persons (n = 58) and key informants (n = 20) in New York and Los Angeles, we analyze FOSTA/SESTA and its harmful effects as a launchpad to more broadly explore how technology, criminalization, shifting governance arrangements, and conservative moralities cohere to exacerbate sex workers’ vulnerability.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT While conducting mist net surveys for the federally endangered Indiana bat (Myotis sodalis) in West Virginia, New York, and Pennsylvania, we quantified wing damage on 422 bats of four species: big brown (Eptesicus fuscus, N = 190), eastern red (Lasiurus borealis, N = 82), little brown (M. lucifugus, N = 55), and northern myotis (M. septentrionalis, N = 95) bats. From 15 May – 15 August 2010, we photographed back-lit wings to reveal damage such as scars, holes, and blotching (non-uniform pigmentation). After quantifying the percent cover of these damage types using image-analysis software, we used generalized non-linear mixed models to determine if percent area of damage differed among scores associated with the categorical wing damage index (WDI) developed by Reichard and Kunz (2009). Although quantified damage did generally increase with WDI score across all species, statistical separation by WDI was only documented for the big brown bat (blotching, scars, blotching + scars combined) and northern myotis (blotching, blotching + scars). We suggest that studies like ours can provide quantitative species-specific datasets that can be examined in a more precise manner than a categorical index.

Abstract (sommario):
In winter 2007, disease symptoms were observed in stored yellow onion bulbs (Allium cepa) grown in New York (NY) in 2006. Similar symptoms were observed in bulbs produced in 2007, 2008, and 2009. Symptoms were associated with one to three bulb scales near the midsection. Infected scales were light brown to brown, not macerated, and lacking foul odors typical of onion bulbs infected with Burkholderia cepacia. Onion grower-packers located in Orange County, NY were concerned that onion lots were rejected following grading by inspectors who cut bulbs to check market quality. Extent of the problem statewide is not currently clear. Isolation attempts were made from symptomatic tissues onto nutrient agar plates (3), with incubation for 24 h at 26 to 28°C, and PA-20 (2), a semiselective medium for the isolation of Pantoea ananatis, with similar incubation for 4 to 6 days. Most strains that grew on PA-20 were gram negative and yellow pigmented with dark centers. Isolated strains were tentatively identified as P. ananatis on the basis of growth on PA-20, a positive indole and negative oxidase test, positive tests for catalase, fermentation of glucose, Voges-Proskauer, and citrate utilization; negative for phenylalanine deaminase, urease, nitrate reductase, methyl red tests, and hypersensitive response induction in tobacco. The BIOLOG (Hayward, CA) system indicated that all presumptive strains of P. ananatis utilized d-mannose, d-cellobiose, d-melibiose, l-inositol, d-arabinose, cellulose, glycerol, d-arabitol, and sucrose, but not glycogen, N-acetyl-d-galactosamine, malonic acid, l-fucose, or xylitol. Strains of P. ananatis recovered from diseased onions in Georgia (GA) (1) were included in all tests as positive controls. We used PCR primers suggested by R. D. Gitaitis (University of Georgia): PanITS1 (5′-GTC TGA TAG AAA GAT AAA GAC-3′) and AS2b (5′-TTC ATA TCA CCT TAC CGG CGC-3′). Together, they amplify the 16S-23S rDNA internal transcribed spacer region of 398 bp; the nucleotide sequences of six NY and three GA strains are identical to each other and 99.3% identical to P. ananatis LMG 20103 (GenBank CP001875) and 93.3% identical to P. stewartii (AJ311838). Pathogenicity tests were done in onion leaves. For inoculation, strains were grown on nutrient agar for 24 h and bacterial suspensions of ~108 CFU/ml were prepared in sterile water. Tips of healthy, greenhouse-grown onion leaves were cut and inoculum was applied to the cut surfaces with cotton swabs. Plants were incubated in a greenhouse for up to 2 weeks. Plants mock inoculated with water were symptomless. Bacteria were recovered from all lesions induced by artificial inoculation with the presumptive strains of P. ananatis. Recovered bacteria had characteristics of P. ananatis. Pathogenic strains from NY and GA produced off-white lesions that extended the length of the leaf, which was consistent with previous studies of the pathogenicity of P. ananatis (1). On the basis of microbiological and molecular analyses and pathogenicity tests, 14 NY strains, each isolated from a different diseased bulb, were identified as P. ananatis. To our knowledge, this is the first published report of P. ananatis causing a disease of onion in New York. References: (1) R. D. Gitaitis et al. USA Crop Prot. 21:983, 2002. (2) T. Abstract (sommario):
Background: Acute kidney (renal) injury (AKI) is a severe and common complication that occurs in ~40% of patients undergoing cardiac surgery. AKI has been associated with increased mortality and worse prognosis. This prospective study was conducted to determine the risk factors for AKI after pericardiectomy and decrease the operative risk of mortality and morbidity. Methods: This was a prospective, observational cohort study of patients with constrictive pericarditis undergoing pericardiectomy. All patients underwent pericardiectomy via median sternotomy. Serum creatinine was used as the diagnostic standard of AKI according to Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes classification. All survivors were monitored to the end date of the study. Results: Consecutive patients (N = 92) undergoing pericardiectomy were divided into 2 groups: with AKI (n = 25) and without AKI (n = 67). The incidence of postoperative AKI was 27.2% (25/92). Hemodialysis was required for 10 patients (40%), and there were 5 operative deaths. Mortality, intubation time, time in intensive care unit, fresh-frozen plasma, and packed red cells of the group with AKI were significantly higher than those of the group without AKI. Both univariate and multivariate analyses showed that statistically significant independent predictors of AKI include intubation time, chest drainage, fresh-frozen plasma, and packed red cells. The latest follow-up data showed that 85 survivors were New York Heart Association class I (97.7%) and 2 were class II (2.3%). Conclusions: AKI after pericardiectomy is a serious complication and contributes to significantly increased morbidity and mortality. Prevention of AKI development after cardiac surgery and optimization of pre-, peri-, and postoperative factors that can reduce AKI, therefore, contribute to a better postoperative outcome and leads to lower rates of AKI, morbidity, and mortality.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractCoastal ecosystems are prone to multiple anthropogenic and natural stressors including eutrophication, acidification, and invasive species. While the growth of some macroalgae can be promoted by excessive nutrient loading and/or elevated pCO2, responses differ among species and ecosystems. Native to the western Pacific Ocean, the filamentous, turf-forming rhodophyte, Dasysiphonia japonica, appeared in estuaries of the northeastern Atlantic Ocean during the 1980s and the northwestern Atlantic Ocean during the late 2000s. Here, we report on the southernmost expansion of the D. japonica in North America and the effects of elevated nutrients and elevated pCO2 on the growth of D. japonica over an annual cycle in Long Island, New York, USA. Growth limitation of the macroalga varied seasonally. During winter and spring, when water temperatures were < 15 °C, growth was significantly enhanced by elevated pCO2 (p < 0.05). During summer and fall, when the water temperature was 15–24 °C, growth was significantly higher under elevated nutrient treatments (p < 0.05). When temperatures reached 28 °C, the macroalga grew poorly and was unaffected by nutrients or pCO2. The δ13C content of regional populations of D. japonica was −30‰, indicating the macroalga is an obligate CO2-user. This result, coupled with significantly increased growth under elevated pCO2 when temperatures were < 15 °C, indicates this macroalga is carbon-limited during colder months, when in situ pCO2 was significantly lower in Long Island estuaries compared to warmer months when estuaries are enriched in metabolically derived CO2. The δ15N content of this macroalga (9‰) indicated it utilized wastewater-derived N and its N limitation during warmer months coincided with lower concentrations of dissolved inorganic N in the water column. Given the stimulatory effect of nutrients on this macroalga and that eutrophication can promote seasonally elevated pCO2, this study suggests that eutrophic estuaries subject to peak annual temperatures < 28 °C may be particularly vulnerable to future invasions of D. japonica as ocean acidification intensifies. Conversely, nutrient reductions would serve as a management approach that would make coastal regions more resilient to invasions by this macroalga.

Abstract (sommario):
We have been using our in-house scoring system of hyphemas, i.e., Shimane University RLC postoperative hyphema scoring system (SU-RLC), which we designed to classify postoperative hyphema. SU-RLC classifies the severities of hyphemas based on three factors, i.e., red blood cells (RBCs) (R) 0–3, layer formation (L) 0–3, and clot (C) 0–1, by slit-lamp observation. To test the clinical usefulness of the SU-RLC for quantifying the postoperative hyphema severity, the SU-RLC scores were compared between eyes that underwent different minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) procedures, i.e., Tanito microhook ab interno trabeculotomy and cataract extraction (TMH-CE) (n = 64 eyes of 64 subjects; mean age ± standard deviation, 72.4 ± 8.1 years) and iStent-CE (n = 21 eyes of 21 subjects; 76.1 ± 10.6 years). Compared to the iStent-CE, higher hyphema scores with the TMH-CE were found for the R scores on postoperative days 1, 2, and 3; for the L score on postoperative day 1; and for the C score on postoperative day 2. The sums of the R, L, and C scores (RLC) on postoperative day 1 were 3.2 ± 1.1 with the TMH-CE and 1.1 ± 1.3 with the iStent-CE; the scores reached almost 0 by 2 weeks in both groups. Significant differences in the RLC scores between the surgical groups were found on postoperative days 1, 2, and 3. Multivariate analyses showed that the TMH-CE rather than iStent-CE was associated with higher R, C, and RLC scores; anticoagulant/antiplatelet use was associated with higher R score; and myopia was associated with a higher C score. In the TMH-CE group, myopia was associated with a higher C score. In the iStent-CE group, anticoagulant/antiplatelet use was associated with higher R and RLC scores; and higher postoperative 1-day intraocular pressure was associated with a higher C score. The SU-RLC successfully detected the difference in hyphema severity between different MIGS procedures; thus, we concluded that our classification system may be feasible to evaluate hyphemas after glaucoma surgery.

Abstract (sommario):
OF SPACE LAYOUT TO NATURAL VENTILATION IN MELAYU PONTIANAK VERNACULAR HOUSEVernacular architecture is architecture that has good response to local climate. This also affects the thermal comfort in the building. As a city that has a humid tropical climate, the thermal comfort of buildings in Kota Pontianak is largely determined by the movement of the wind that occurs inside the building. Adaptation to climate in Pontianak's melayu vernacular house is not only on the use of building elements such as openings and building materials, but also on the typical spatial layout, including a terrace, a central room and a back veranda that separates the main house from the secondary house. The aim of the study was to see whether this spatial arrangement has an effect on natural ventilation in the indoor space. The study was conducted with measurements of thermal comfort variables, especially temperature and wind speed. Then the measurement results were analyzed descriptively quantitatively and viewed the relationship between variables and spatial arrangement – i.e. how the temperatures and wind speed differ in each rooms – so that conclusions could be drawn. The results showed that the layout in Pontianak's melayu vernacular house, namely the presence of terraces and back veranda, played a role in the natural ventilation that occurred in the indoor space. The terrace plays a role in reducing the outside temperature that enters the building (30.74 °C in the outdoor, then 29.84 °C on the front terrace, and 29.09 °C in the indoor). Back veranda and spatial layout provide better wind movement, indicated by small difference between the speed of wind in the indoor and the outdoor space of the house with back veranda (0.51 m/s) compared to the house without back veranda (0.77 m/s).Keywords: natural ventilation, vernacular, spatial layoutREFERENCESBoutet, Terry S. Abstract (sommario):
Prenatal and early childhood exposures are implicated as causes of allergy, but the effects of intrauterine growth restriction on immune function and allergy are poorly defined. We therefore evaluated effects of experimental restriction of fetal growth on immune function and allergic sensitization in adolescent sheep. Immune function (circulating total red and white blood cells, neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils, and the antibody response to Clostridial vaccination) and responses to house dust mite (HDM) allergen and ovalbumin (OVA) antigen sensitization (specific total Ig, IgG1, and IgE antibodies, and cutaneous hypersensitivity) were investigated in adolescent sheep from placentally restricted (PR, n = 23) and control ( n = 40) pregnancies. Increases in circulating HDM-specific IgE ( P = 0.007) and OVA-specific IgE ( P = 0.038) were greater in PR than control progeny. PR did not alter total Ig, IgG1, or IgM responses to either antigen. PR increased OVA-specific but not HDM-specific IgA responses in females only ( P = 0.023). Multiple birth increased Ig responses to OVA in a sex-specific manner. PR decreased the proportion of positive cutaneous hypersensitivity responders to OVA at 24 h ( P = 0.030) but had no effect on cutaneous responses to HDM. Acute wheal responses to intradermal histamine correlated positively with birth weight in singletons ( P = 0.023). Intrauterine growth restriction may suppress inflammatory responses in skin downstream of IgE induction, without impairment in antibody responses to a nonpolysaccharide vaccine. Discord between cutaneous and IgE responses following sensitization suggests new mechanisms for prenatal allergy programming.

Abstract (sommario):
Objective: Heart failure is a major health problem worldwide. We report the initial experience of a new left ventricular assist device (LVAD) Heartcon—a centrifugal pump of magnetic-fluid suspension rotor integrated with the pump and machine. From September 2020 to March 2023, HeartCon was implanted in a total of 78 cases throughout China, 27 were implanted in TEDA International Cardiovascular Hospital. Methods: The patient data collected from the medical record included patient demographics, surgical and cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) data, doses of transfused red blood cells, mechanical ventilation time (h), intensive care unit (ICU) stay time (d), and cardiac function indices assessed by echocardiography, 6-minute walk tests, and N-terminal pro brain natriuretic peptide (NT proBNP) values. Results: All patients were in New York Heart Association (NYHA) grade IV before surgery and 21 had a dilated cardiomyopathy. All patients survived the surgery. One patient underwent heart transplantation 10 months after the implantation. Eight patients reported adverse event events. The duration of mechanical ventilation after operation was 37.8 ± 52.0 h. The incidence of hemorrhagic stroke was 7.4% and the incidence of mediastinal infection was 7.4%. At 90 day followup, 25 patients were in NYHA grade I and the other 2 patients were in grade II. Conclusion: We conclude that HeartCon implantation is a safe and useful LVAD for treatment of end-stage heart failure. It provides a shorter duration of mechanical ventilation time, and a lower incidence of hemorrhagic stroke and mediastinal infection.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract (sommario):
The work is devoted to development of a smart lighting system that is able to change correlated colour temperature and consists of tunable 4-components RGBW clusters controlled via three channels. It is shown that fixing a ratio between the intensities of white and red LEDs at a level of 100:9 enables obtaining high values of colour rendering in a wide range of correlated colour temperatures. A control of 3 from 4 channels simplifies the system. The influence of the red LED on CRI and luminous efficiency is analysed. Full Text: PDF References:J. Gooley, S. Rajaratnam, G. Brainard, R. Abstract (sommario):
Dasycercus cristicauda and Dasycercus blythi are significant mesopredators in arid Australia and both species are threatened nationally. We investigated size dimorphism, habitat use, and population dynamics of sympatric populations during a low rainfall period in central Australia and examined congruence between morphological and molecular methods of species identification. Our molecular analyses confirmed the presence of two Dasycercus species in sympatry and showed that the descriptions of Woolley (2005) allowed confident identification of the two species in the field. We captured 23 D. cristicauda and 55 D. blythi over 39 months on 20 monitoring plots and another 49 survey sites stratified across five habitat types within a 7000 km2 area. Both species showed sexual dimorphism in body mass with males being significantly heavier. The species typically occupied non-overlapping habitat; D. cristicauda was restricted to sandridges (n = 4 sites) with an understorey dominated by spinifex (Triodia), whereas D. blythi occupied sand plain and gibber plain, the latter being a new habitat for the species. Capture rate of D. cristicauda peaked in autumn-winter 2008 and winter 2009. D. blythi exhibited similar variability with peaks in winter 2009 and summer-autumn 2010. We consider that the relatively low abundance of each species during low rainfall periods makes them vulnerable to predation by feral house cats and European red foxes.

Abstract (sommario):
The TTR V142I variant associated with hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis (hATTR) is present in up to 4% of African American (AA) and 1% of Hispanic/Latinx (HL) individuals and increases risk for heart failure. Delayed and missed diagnoses could potentiate health disparities in these populations. We evaluated whether population-based genomic screening could effectively identify individuals at risk for hATTR and prompt initiation of risk management. We identified participants of the BioMe Biobank in New York City who received TTR V142I results through a pilot genomic screening program. We performed a retrospective medical record review to evaluate for the presence hATTR-related systemic features, uptake of recommended follow-up, and short-term outcomes. Thirty-two AA (N = 17) and HL (N = 15) individuals received a TTR V142I result (median age 57, 81% female). None had a previous diagnosis of hATTR. Eighteen (56%) had hATTR-related systemic features, including 4 (13%) with heart failure, 10 (31%) with carpal tunnel syndrome, and 10 (31%) with spinal stenosis. Eighteen (56%) pursued follow-up with a cardiologist within 8 months. One person received a diagnosis of hATTR. Thus, we found that the majority of V142I-positive individuals had hATTR-related systemic features at the time of result disclosure, including well-described red flags. Genomic screening can help identify hATTR risk and guide management early on, avoiding potential delays in diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract (sommario):
In elderly, high-risk surgical patients, sutureless aortic valve replacement (AVR) can often be an alternative to conventional AVR; shorter aortic cross-clamp and cardiopulmonary bypass times are the chief advantages. We compared the outcomes of sutureless AVR with those of conventional AVR in 70 elderly patients who underwent concomitant cardiac surgical procedures. We retrospectively analyzed the cases of 42 men and 28 women (mean age, 70.4 ± 10.3 yr; range, 34–93 yr) who underwent cardiac operations plus AVR with either a sutureless valve (group 1, n=38) or a conventional bioprosthetic or mechanical valve (group 2, n=32). Baseline patient characteristics were similar except for worse New York Heart Association functional status and the prevalence of diabetes mellitus in group 1. In group 1, the operative, cross-clamp, and cardiopulmonary bypass times were shorter (all P=0.001), postoperative drainage amounts were lower (P=0.009), hospital stays were shorter (P=0.004), and less red blood cell transfusion was needed (P=0.037). Echocardiograms before patients' discharge from the hospital showed lower peak and mean aortic gradients in group 1 (mean transvalvular gradient, 8.4 ± 2.8 vs 12.2 ± 5.2 mmHg; P=0.012). We found that elderly, high-risk patients who underwent multiple cardiac surgical procedures and sutureless AVR had better hemodynamic outcomes and shorter ischemic times than did patients who underwent conventional AVR.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Background: Despite dramatically improved long term outcomes seen with all-trans retinoic acid therapy in APL, early mortality remains a substantial challenge. Recent data from a single center (Haematologica 2012; 97:133) and the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) registry (Blood 2011; 118: 1248) report 30 day mortality rates of 26% (n = 18 of 70) and 17% (n = 238 of 1400), respectively. Early deaths are predominately due to hemorrhage. Patients with APL invariably have abnormal laboratory hemostasis tests. The standard of practice is to prophylactically transfuse platelets, plasma and cryoprecipitate to mitigate abnormal platelet counts, PT/PTT and fibrinogen levels. Standard blood bank practice is to transfuse platelets, plasma and cryoprecipitate either without regard to ABO blood group (platelets, cryoprecipitate), or, in some centers, transfusing non-identical universal donor group AB plasma. Evidence from observational studies demonstrate that use of ABO non-identical blood components is associated with increased bleeding. Formation of immune complexes containing ABO antibody, soluble and cellular antigens causes derangement of in vitro measures of platelet function and whole blood clotting. We hypothesized that use of ABO identical blood components and saline washed transfusions (red cells and platelets) would be associated with reduced early mortality in APL by avoidance of transfusion induced hemostatic dysfunction. Methods: This is a single center cohort study of APL patients treated in an 800 bed university community and referral hospital. Novel approaches to transfusion support, based upon randomized trials, have included implementation of ABO identical platelet transfusions for all patients with acute leukemia in 1990, use of only ABO identical cryoprecipitate in 2005, and washed transfusions of red cells and platelets for all patients with acute leukemia <50 years of age beginning in 2006. Plasma transfusion has always been ABO identical. Two comparison populations were recent literature reports and the New York State Cancer Registry. We characterized 30 day mortality in APL patients seen in our institution since 2000 as a convenience sample comparable to literature reports, beginning roughly when ATRA therapy became uniform for induction therapy. Only patients receiving their induction therapy in our hospital were included. Results: Of 41 patients we had 2 early (30 day) deaths (5%; a 71-81% reduction from expected). Early mortality at 100 days was 7% (n = 3). The 30 day mortality in the younger cohort <50 years of age (n = 16) receiving washed transfusions was 0%. Restricting the analysis to patients treated since 2006 (ABO identical transfusions; mostly washed) (n=27; mean age: 43 years; median: 41 years; range: 12 to 79), the early mortality rate at 30 days was 3.7%. Long-term survival (5 years) of our APL patients was similar to New York State Cancer Registry and literature reports (80-83%). Discussion: Patients treated with transfusion regimens including ABO identical blood components, with or without washing, experienced early mortality at 30 days that was strikingly better (reduced by 71% to 86%) than that reported in the recent literature (3.7% to 5% vs. 17% to 26%). If these observed reductions in early mortality are causal, the avoidance of ABO immune complex induced derangements in hemostasis are a plausible contributing mechanism. These promising results provide a rationale for randomized trials of relatively simple and inexpensive approaches to reducing early hemorrhagic mortality in APL: use of ABO identical transfusions and washing to remove supernatant plasma.
