The aim of the study was to analyse players’ individual proficiency at serve reception and its influence on the following attack in the Estonian national team during the qualification for the European Championship in 2016. The subjects were the players of Estonian national volleyball team during the qualification for the European Championship in 2016. To collect data, video recordings of eight games of the Estonian national team were viewed; the number serve receptions, type and zone of reception and proficiency were registered. In addition, the number of attacks following serve reception, their zone, performer and proficiency were recorded. The results revealed that success at the reception of serve influences the proficiency of attack. At more successful reception, the proficiency of attack was higher than at poorer reception. As a result of the study, it was shown that serve reception by the Estonian team was more proficient in sets won than in sets lost. In the case of more successful reception, the Estonian national volleyball team was more proficient at attack than in the case of less proficient reception. When types of reception were compared, the receivers of the Estonian national team were most proficient at reception from above. The receivers of the Estonian national received the serve best in zone 5.

In free-space optical (FSO) communication systems, on–off keying (OOK) is a widely used modulation format. Coherent and non-coherent OOK receivers with sensitivities of −54.60 dBm and −51.25 dBm, respectively, were built with a communication rate of 1 Gbit/s and a bit error rate of 10−3. In an FSO communication system, the parameters must be designed to ensure a sufficient link margin. In contrast to optical fiber systems, FSO systems have ambient light (AL) noise such as sunlight. The efficiency of sunlight coupling in the single-mode fiber (SMF) of the receivers was calculated in this study. For a signal light with AL, the change in the main components of noise and the sensitivity deterioration were theoretically analyzed and experimentally verified in conditions of coherent reception and non-coherent reception with a preamplifier. For coherent reception, the theoretical sensitivity deterioration results are consistent with the experimental results which indicate that coherent reception exhibits better anti-AL noise performance than non-coherent reception when the power spectral density of the AL is the same. Coherent and non-coherent receivers coupled with SMF can work in direct sunlight. When the receiver lens diameter is greater than 4.88 × 10−4 m, the anti-AL noise performance of the receiver can be improved by increasing the receiver lens diameter.

The Automatic Identification System (AIS) is now well established and widely used in commercial shipping. The system originated from a safety mandate but AIS messages have also been shown to be useful from a security situational awareness perspective. In terms of coastal security, AIS messages are often received by land-based receivers positioned along a nation's coastline. The operational range of the receivers is controlled by complex variable VHF propagation characteristics, power of the transmitter, etc. However, certain characteristics of the reception coverage area can be determined from the AIS message receptions themselves. This paper presents an algorithm to compute coverage characteristics using AIS messages. The algorithm is applied to synthetic data with known coverage characteristics, and also real AIS data obtained from the Maritime Safety and Security Information System. Results from the Norwegian, North and Baltic Seas show how the coverage estimate is influenced by the coverage edge, lack of vessel activity, and diversity in the source data.

Popular small satellites host individual sensors or sensor networks in space but require ground stations with directional antennas on rotators to download sensors’ data. Such ground stations can establish a single downlink communication with only one satellite at a time with high vulnerability to system outages when experiencing severe channel impairments or steering engine failures. To contribute to the area of improving the reception quality of small satellites signals, this paper presents a simple receive diversity scheme with proposed processing algorithms to virtually combine satellite downlink streams collected from multiple omnidirectional receivers. These algorithms process multiple received versions of the same signal from multiple geographically separated receiving sites to be combined in one virtual ground station. This virtual ground station helps detect the intended signal more reliably based only on a network of simple and cooperating software-defined radio receivers with omnidirectional antennas. The suggested receive diversity combining techniques can provide significant system performance improvement if compared to the performance of each individual receiving site. In addition, the probability of system outages is decreased even if one or more sites experience severe impairment consequences. Simulation results showed that the bit error rate (BER) of the combined stream is lower than the BER of the best quality receiving site if considered alone. Moreover, virtual ground stations with cooperative omnidirectional reception at geographically separated receivers also allow data to be received from multiple satellites in the same frequency band simultaneously, as software-defined receivers can digitize a wider portion of the frequency band. This can be a significant conceptual advantage as the number of small satellites transmitting data grows, and it is reasonable to avoid the corresponding necessary increase in the number of fully equipped ground stations with rotators.

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) technology is presented for use in free-space optical (FSO) communications accompanied by the spatial diversity reception. Using quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) modulation formats, the OFDM signals show robustness to support high spectral efficiency and compatibility with the spatial diversity reception to improve receiver sensitivity. Compared with the single-carrier QPSK signal, the OFDM-QPSK signal with 64 sub-carriers can reduce the BER from 2.87 × 10−3 to 2.98 × 10−4 at the SNR of 6 dB. Using a two-aperture spatial diversity reception with OFDM, the BER can be reduced from 2.45 × 10−3 of a single receiver to 6.10 × 10−4 under moderate turbulence conditions. Under strong turbulence, the BER of the single receiver is 2.14 × 10−2. It can be improved to 1.16 × 10−3 by using four-aperture receivers, and even 6.87 × 10−4 by using six-aperture receivers. The optimized aperture number should be selected according to channel conditions.

A significant contribution to broadening and deepening the field of glottodidactics is made, inter alia, by the results of codematic and cybernetic research. Within the glottodidactic system, the following processes can be identified: 1) the encoding of information by the primary sender (the instructor), 2) the sending of information and its linguistic and extralinguistic monitoring to the primary receivers (learners), 3) the reception and decoding of information by the primary receivers, and the construction of matrices of new lexical and grammatical structures, 4) the encoding of information by the secondary sender (the learner), 5) the sending of information to the secondary receiver (the instructor) within a feedback system, 6) the reception of information by the secondary receiver, its checking and correction, the regulation and syntactic ordering and renewal of the glottodidactic process.

Introduction: Advanced terminal capabilities increase mobile broadband traffic, straining spectrum resources. Traditional methods like base stations are expensive. Heterogeneous networks (HetNets) using pico cells attempt to improve efficiency, however interference persists. A suggested mitigation technique uses the modified greatest weighting delay first (MLWDF) algorithm for resource allocation and reception processing, which performs well in simulations. Space, time, frequency, time-frequency, and coding domain interference reduction methods are investigated, each having hardware requirements and restrictions. Aim and objectives: The study uses MATLAB to construct and simulate robust RF receivers. Enhancing 5G communication network interference reduction is the goal. Method: Simulink is used to study transmitter and receiver RF losses, including I/Q imbalances, phase noise, and power amplifier non-linearity. Spectrum masks, error vector magnitudes, and peaks-to-average power ratios measure performance. Simulink models examine constellation distortion, neighboring channel rejection, and packet error rates in 802.11ax and 5G waveform reception due to RF impairments. The paper stresses the necessity of reliable data measurement for RF interference analysis and discusses interference mitigation. Results: Comparing Error Vector Magnitudes (EVMs) in Case 1 and Case 2 shows how NR interference affects HE receptions. EVMs approach -20 dB in Case 1 without NR interference. In Case 2, NR interference distorts constellations and lowers EVMs to -17 dB, suggesting poor reception. ACRs demonstrate NR-free channel separation by measuring power differences. The future investigation involves analyzing ACRs with HE waveforms as interferers and examining system behavior under different interference situations. Conclusion: To reduce non-idealities in mobile communication transceivers, this thesis presents digital projection interpolation and Wiener-SAF for leakage route and receiver nonlinearity estimation.

DVB-T2 (Digital Video Broadcasting Terrestrial Second Generation) reception requires a sufficient quality of the received signal. <em>CNR</em> (carrier-to-noise ratio) and <em>BER</em> (bit-error-rate) are two of quantities describing the quality. This paper presents the range of each quantity providing a successful reception based on real data obtained by field-measurements. This data was collected from MO (mobile-outdoor) and SI (stationary-indoor) receiving-systems capturing signal sent by some on-air trial transmitters broadcasting services focused on the fixed-receivers. The result indicated that the successful and failed receptions were split into two quite separated (concentrated) ranges of post-decoded <em>BER</em> and therefore a boundary distinguishing them could be prominently defined. In contrast, they were spread in a wide common range of <em>CNR</em> and pre-decoded <em>BER</em>. Furthermore, the boundary that corresponded to this last quantity was ambiguous. In the case of MO reception as numerical examples, the two split ranges of post-decoded <em>BER</em> were less than about 10<sup>-5</sup> and more than about 2.7 × 10<sup>-4</sup> for the successful and failed receptions, respectively, whereas <em>CNR</em> as high as about 14 dB could be viewed as a soft boundary distinguishing these both reception-success conditions.

In this paper macrodiversity reception with macrodiversity selection combining (SC) receiver and two microdiversity MRC receivers operating over shadowed multipath fading channel is studied. Received signal experiences short term fading and correlated Gamma long term fading resulting in system performance degradation. Level crossing rate (LCR) of η-μ random process and level crossing rate of signals at outputs of microdiversity MRC receivers are efficiently calculated. By using these derived formulas, level crossing rate of macrodiversity SC receiver output signal process is calculated. By using this result, average fade duration (AFD) of the proposed wireless communication system can be calculated. The influence of η-μ short term fading severity parameter, Gamma long term fading severity parameter and Gamma long term correlation coefficient on level crossing rate is analysed and studied.

Maritime wireless sensor networks are considered to be the primary means of monitoring methods in the marine environment. The transmission between sensor node and sink node in maritime wireless sensor networks is usually unreliable due to the harsh propagation environment. To extend the transmission range or to enhance the transmission reliability between sensor nodes and sink node, we propose a macrodiversity reception scheme in the sink node equipped with distributed multiple hard-decision receivers. Multiple receivers are divided into several clusters and placed at different locations to receive different signal copies suffering from different fadings. Furthermore, a cascaded combining strategy based on hard-decision information is used to reduce the overall complexity of receiving side. The experimental results in the ocean scenarios show that the macrodiversity reception scheme with two antenna clusters has a transmission gain of 3–4 dB compared with the single antenna reception when the package loss rate is 10 − 2 . The study casts a new method for reliable transmission in maritime wireless sensor networks using commercial transceivers which can only output hard-decision results.

In this thesis a reference-based successive interference cancellation (RSIC) scheme is proposed for mitigating interference in multi-platform communications. The performances of two RSIC techniques (Non-Demodulated and Demodulated) for quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) modulation in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system are analyzed. Simulations show RSIC schemes give considerable increase in performance compared to a system where interference cancellation is not utilized.

Existing telemetry ground receivers typically operate in a bandwidth between 215MHz to 2485MHz, while the new C-Band covers 4.4GHz to 5.15GHz. Additionally, some installations are choosing to incorporate down converters in the antenna as an alternate approach. This paper describes an innovative approach to solving all of these problems, by enhancing the capabilities of existing range assets. The plan is to upgrade existing fielded receivers without impacting their existing functionality to also include C-Band reception. The upgrade module along with the software revision will provide the user with a fully functional receiver in the existing bands and the newly added bands. This will be accomplished by the development of an advanced down converter sections with coverage across all bands that will replace existing modules within the telemetry receivers. It is the details of this development that will be presented.

The Global System for Mobile communications (GSM), which covers 54% of the world's mobile market, evolved into the General Packet Radio Service (GPRS). The thesis addresses interference suppression using new radio frequency (RF) and microwave design methods for GSM and GPRS. The overall outcome is interference reduction and enhanced network capacity, leading to superior quality of service (QoS) for wider area coverage. The main results can be summarized as follows * Design, manufacturing and characterisation measurements of new compact filters for GSM and GPRS base stations in order to reduce the out-of-band interference. It is shown that filters with novel microstrip resonators - dual mode filters and cross coupled filters - provide both a high degree of miniaturisation and narrow bandwidth. * Development of a new 3-D Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) design method for new microstrip filters. A non-homogeneous Perfectly Matched Layer (NH-PML) was implemented for Absorbing Boundary Conditions (ABC) to increase the accuracy of the FDTD method. Signal estimation techniques were developed to speed up FDTD computations. A novel design method based on neural networks (NN) and FDTD was implemented to reduce the total design time. * Investigation of High Temperature Superconductors (HTS) thin film resonators and antennas at microwave frequencies. High Q-factor HTS devices considerably enhance both the front-ends sensitivity and selectivity of wireless receivers. * Design, manufacturing and testing of radio frequency (RF) electronics for 16 elements GSM and GPRS Smart Antenna for multipath fading mitigation and for in-band interference including co-channel interference (CCI) suppression.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The preliminary development of a FM radio receiver module is discussed. An existing narrowband system operating between 48MHz and 50MHz will be replaced. Digital components were investigated, compared and used with analogue techniques to build a more flexible two-way radio receiver system. A direct digital synthesizer was considered as a replacement for the current synthesized phased lock loop local oscillator and much attention was given to the local oscillator and mixer design, characteristics and measurement procedures. A detailed study of receiver systems was undertaken to determine the specifications needed for every receiver component to achieve satisfactory receiver performance in the end. Receiver characteristics as well as receiver measurement procedures are defined. A software tool was developed to aid the design process, establishing computationally whether the receiver specifications are met prior to the final design. The complete design process, from fundamental specifications through to the developed final receiver module is discussed. A modular design approach was used to guarantee easy manufacturing, substitution and testing. This approach comprises the break-down of the receiver into well defined components that are each matched to 50O. The separate components of the system were designed, measured and characterized to make it possible to replace only a single component instead of the entire system when a part becomes redundant.

Die radio is tydens ontwerp opgebreek in boublokkies wat elkeen aangepas word na 50O. The document initially describes the operation of the decoder and the production system. Thereafter actual engineering problems are stated and their solutions discussed. The project involves the accurate identification of problem areas on the production line and the systematic solving for each case. Subjects include static electricity pretesting and automatic insertion machine defects. Analysis of these problems provides one with a better perspective towards the production line and its inherent problems. Results and solutions are presented photographically as well as tabulated in the annexure. In some cases, such as defect classification, deductions were concluded that were very different from those initially expected.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of this thesis was to investigate the use of behavioral level models in receiver simulations using the capabilities of Agilent's Advanced Design System. Behavioral level modeling has become increasingly attractive because it offers faster and easier results for system level simulations. The work in this thesis focused strongly on nonlinear measurements to characterize the various nonlinear phenomena that are present in amplifiers and mixers. Measurement automation software was developed to automate the process. An error correction technique was also developed to increase the accuracy of spectrum analyzer measurements. The measured data was used to implement the behavioral level amplifier and mixer models in ADS. The accuracy of the models was compared to measured data and the different available models were compared. Finally the models were combined to realize different receivers and were used to do typical receiver tests. These test include gain and gain compression, two-tone intermodulation and spurious responses. The results are compared to measured data to test the accuracy and usefulness of the models and simulation techniques.

Die gemete data is gebruik om die nie-liniêre gedrags-modelle in ADS te implementer. Die modelle is in simulasies gebruik en die akuraatheid van die simulasies is teen gemete data getoets. Die finale deel van die tesis gebruik die modelle om tipiese ontvanger karakteristieke te voorspel. Die volgende toetse is gedoen: aanwins en kompressie, twee-toon intermodulasie en hoer orde meng produkte. An extensive radio wave propagation measurement campaign was conducted at 1.3 GHz and 4.0 GHz inside four buildings, including a sports arena, a modern closed-plan office building, and two dissimilar, open-plan factories. Measurements were recorded at 57 locations using base station antenna heights of 1.7 meters and 4.0 meters. Results were obtained for mean and maximum excess delay, rms delay spread, time delay jitter, differential delay jitter, and path loss through analyses of impulse response estimates, which were obtained via repetitive 5 ns probing pulses. The effects of frequency, antenna height, topography (line-of-sight or obstructed direct path), and building environment on delay spread and path loss are quantified. Results indicate that, on average, the frequencies and antenna heights used in this study have minimal impact on rms delay spread and path loss. However, topography and building environment significantly affect these parameters. RMS delay spread values as high as 230 ns were observed in open plan factories. Computed path loss power law exponents are 1.84 and 2.35 for line-of-sight and obstructed topographies, respectively. A second campaign was conducted to determine the effects of antenna directivity and polarization on propagation parameters. On average, line-of-sight indoor channels offer 8 dB of cross-polarization discrimination, whereas obstructed environments offer less than 3 dB. Directional antennas provide a significant reduction in rms delay spread over omni-directional antennas. In line-of-sight environments, circular polarization provides an additional delay spread reduction.

Frequent use of metaphors is a distinctive feature of the Chinese scholar Qian Zhongshu’s popular novel Weicheng (Fortress Besieged). Its English translation by Jeanne Kelly and Nathan K. Mao was well received in the English-speaking world. What are readers’ responses to and comments on the metaphors in this novel, and how are the translated metaphors received by target language readers, compared to their reception by source language readers? Our big data based study uses sentiment analysis to break new ground and improve our understanding of English readers’ reception of English translations of Chinese metaphors, which inevitably impose a heavy cultural load. We also discuss the implications of the differences with Chinese readers’ reception of metaphors in the original work.

The empirical line of reception studies has staked out new research questions regarding the effects of translation on actual readers. Nevertheless, the underlying mechanisms of how the translated text flows towards and is received by the target reader remain elusive, notably with respect to attempts to rationalise the individual reader’s decision-making in compromising situations. Drawing on empirical evidence from a quasi-experiment in which a group of 22 readers in Australia responded to various translations of Chinese foreign affairs discourses, this chapter illustrates how a nonlinear trade-off model serves to explain the reader’s ultimate judgements in which linguistic and ethical considerations are weighed against each other. It is found that a pair of two incompatible but desirable expectations is (un)consciously calculated by the reader. The extent to which the translation can be accepted is susceptible to the degree to which the reader trusts the translator.

AbstractLong-distance trade brought merchants, skippers, and other visiting traders to the early modern towns of the Baltic rim. This chapter explores how they were received in the visited towns through the court protocols from the towns of Lübeck, Malmö, Stockholm, and Reval covering the period 1515–1559. A spatial perspective on the reception of merchants and traders shows that the level of hospitality granted to visitors depended on their perceived trustworthiness and social standing. The view on visiting traders was conflicted, as they simultaneously offered possibilities for lucrative trade and posed a perceived threat to the social order of the early modern towns.

In every space mission, the ability to contact the satellite to transmit or receive telecommands and data is one of the critical parts, so having a good ground segment is fundamental. In support to 3Cat-2 operations a ground station was first developed by the UPC NanoSat Lab at UPC Campus Nord premises. However, due to increasing radio frequency interference it was moved to the Institute Space Studies of Catalonia (IEEC) - Observatori del Montsec (OdM), located in Sant Esteve de la Sarga, Lleida. This location has outstanding reception conditions in terms of very weak interference levels, and excellent elevation mask (i.e. satellites can be tracked even below the horizon). The ground station is equipped with a TX/RX Yagi antenna for amateur bands VHF (144-146 MHz) and UHF (435-438 MHz), and it also includes an S-band 3-meter dish in the commercial band (2025-2110 MHz, 2200-2290 MHz) for reception that will be upgraded for transmission in 2022. The antenna rotors, receivers etc. are remotely controlled to the operation-center in Barcelona and operations can be automated. Nowadays, the ground station is jointly operated by the UPC NanoSat Lab and the IEEC in support to the Catalan New Space strategy, in addition to the upcoming UPC missions.

Purpose: The main goal of this study is to analyze possible differences in the space of anthro-pometric characteristics, motoric and functional capabilities on the sample of senior male vol-leyball players with different playing roles. On the base of obtained data normative and modal values could be established eventually helping coaches to perform secondary selection – so called volleyball specialization (at the age of 15–16), pointing young players to certain roles where they will be able to achieve maximum results in the volleyball career. Methods: The research was conducted on 74 senior volleyball players all members of Cro-atian premier league teams. Players were categorized as setters (n = 11), central players (n = 17), receivers – attackers (n = 20), opposite hitters (n = 16), and liberos (n = 10). The sample of independent variables consisted of 4 anthropometric measures (body height, body weight, one hand standing reach and two hand standing reach. Ten standardized were used for the assessment of motor skills: lateral agility, starting acceleration, spike and block reach, general flexibility, explosive strength of arms and shoulders, spiking speed, repetitive strength of trunk flexors, static strength of trunk extensor and repetitive strength of chest, arm and shoulders. For the estimation of functional abilities, the relative maximal oxygen consump-tion was used. Dependent variable – playing role – is numerically defined and represents the afiliation of a player to a specific group: (1) setters, (2) central players, (3) receivers – at-tackers, (4) opposite hitters and (5) libero players. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with Tukey HSD post-hoc test was used to determine possible significant differences among groups of players. The level of significance was set at 0.05. Results: Significant differences (p < 0,05) were detected for 8 of 16 measured variables – all four anthropometric measures and four measures for the assessment of specific speed – strength capacities. Conclusion: Based on the obtained results, it is possible to identify the grouping of players in two subgroups, subgroup of attacking players (central players, receivers – attackers and opposite hitters) and the subgroup of the other players (setters and libero players). The main goal of the attackers is to win points with spiking blocking and serving actions for which they need certain anthropometric characteristics (height, weight, and arm span) and capabilities that enable high reaches during those actions. Extremely important is the ability to generate high spiking and serving speeds to prevent the reaction of the opponent block, defense, and service reception. For the second subgroup it can be said that they are not necessarily concentrated on winning points but on the preparation activities before spike in attack or counterattack like service reception (libero), defense (libero and setter) or setting (setter and libero) in the attack and counterattack complex for which body height, body weight and specific speed – strength capacities are not crucial (setter) or they are completely irrelevant (libero). Based on the obtained results the experts in the training process can direct the play-ers toward specific role and develop very skills that are highly correlated with the specific situational eficiency in the game.

For over a decade, a number of scholars and scientific papers emphasized the continual decline of trust in public institutions, mainly in the democracies of “the West”. Some associated the observed phenomenon with the rise of social media and digital environments, while others attributed it to the rise of economic and political power of less democratic regimes of “the East”, such as China and Russia. In times of crisis, trust in government institutions could be of crucial importance for the appropriateness of the institutional response to the problems facing the nation. Across the EU, it is obvious that citizens of certain member states express higher trust in government and state institutions than others. This division has been even more apparent during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially when vaccination rates of particular EU countries are compared. In Croatia, the Government’s main message concerning COVID- 19 vaccination was modeled to appeal to the receivers’ empathy towards others. However, emotional appeal is just one of the possible courses of action. Theories of rational choices and exchange theories emphasize other, often ulterior motives, such as selfishness and revenge, as equally effective purposes to undertake certain actions. In this paper, we have examined four different types of messages, based on selfishness, revenge, honesty and empathy, and their power to persuade research subjects to get vaccinated. Message reception results are compared to other socio-demographic and behavioral factors to define which message type would be most appealing to different demographic groups.

In macaque monkey three distinct pathways relay information from the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) to the striate cortex. Two parvocellular pathways contain neurons with chromatically opponent receptive fields: one receives opposed inputs from R cones and G cones; the other receives inputs from B cones opposed by some combined signal from R and G cones. A distinctive feature of the R–G neurons (much the largest group in the LGN) is that they respond well to chromatic patterns of low spatial frequency and achromatic patterns of high spatial frequency. Magnocellular neurons receive inputs from all three classes of cone.

We argue that crisis triggered by COVID-19 increased pre-existing vulnerabilities in what concerns to minorities’ access to basic and public social resources in receiving countries, taking the Portuguese reality as an example. Our conclusions are based on the investigation made under the scope of the PPEACE project (Public Policies and Reception of Foreign Citizens Project), which aims to contribute to scientific advance in public policies and to propose better-informed policy options for the reception of asylum seekers and refugees. Based on the results of 180 questionnaires applied from October 2020 to February 2021, to asylum seekers and refugees, public entities, and NGO representatives we confront migrants’ perceptions/experiences and service providers’ needs and views. Through their eyes we try to discuss the impact that the pandemic had on public policies for reception and integration, the obstacles upraised to guaranteeing the access of this vulnerable individuals to public resources, satisfaction of basic needs, and the most affected dimensions of their daily life. The results of our empirical study reveal that the perceptions of recipients and implementers of public policies in times of pandemic are two sides of the same mirror and differ considerably. Differences are substantial between receivers and givers but with no significant or fracturing discrepancies. In this sense, this methodologic exercise reinforces the importance of participatory processes for better understanding the impacts of public policies on vulnerable groups, on the access to fundamental rights and satisfaction of basic needs.

This Coastal and Hydraulics Engineering Technical Note (CHETN) describes a method for evaluating the received coverage from Automatic Identification System (AIS) shore sites and the availability of historic vessel position reports along the Ohio River. The network of AIS shoreside sites installed and operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and the US Coast Guard (USCG) receive information transmitted from vessels; however, reception of these transmissions is generally line-of-sight between the vessel and the AIS site antenna. Reception may also be affected by factors such as the quality of the transceiver installation aboard the vessel as well as the state of the equipment at the receiving site. Understanding how to define and quantify coverage gaps along the inland river system can inform research utilizing AIS data, provide information on the performance of the AIS network, and provide guidance for efforts to address identified coverage gaps

The purpose of this Coastal and Hydraulics Engineering technical note (CHETN) is to propose a list of candidate sites along the Ohio River for the installation of Automatic Identification System (AIS) shoreside towers within the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Lock Operations Management Application (LOMA) program. The LOMA program manages a network of terrestrial (shoreside) AIS sites (Figure 1) and vessel-mounted AIS sites with receive and transmit capability. However, there are known limits to the reception and transmission areas served by existing shoreside towers (referred to as “coverage gaps”) along the Ohio River (DiJoseph et al. 2021). Parties interested in improving AIS coverage to enhance maritime domain awareness and navigational safety along the Ohio River may wish to pursue the installation of LOMA program hardware for this purpose.

The purpose is to identify AIS coverage gaps in the current system. Reception of AIS transmissions between shore-based transceivers and vessels is generally line-of-sight between the vessel and the AIS site antenna. However, signal reception may be affected by factors such as the distance and terrain between the vessel and the transceiver site, quality of the transceiver installation, state of the equipment either aboard the vessel or at the shore transceiver station, and atmospheric phenomena. Quantifying coverage gaps along the inland waterways system can inform research that uses AIS data, provide information on the performance of the AIS network, and provide guidance for efforts to address coverage gaps to improve navigation safety. In autumn 2020, severe shoaling was occurring on the Missouri River. As the shoals were identified, the Kansas City District requested the LOMA system transmit AIS Aid to Navigation (AtoN) to mark the shoals in several critical areas. However, vessel pilots sometimes reported that they were not receiving the AIS AtoN being transmitted. At the request of the Kansas City District, the US Army Engineer Research and Development Center, Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory (ERDC-CHL), conducted a coverage analysis using data collected from the LOMA AIS transceivers in the area to determine if there were coverage issues and their extent and to aid in determining the best means of addressing any coverage gaps.

The purpose of this study was to map the on-vessel receipt of message 21 broadcasts from shoreside Automatic Identification System (AIS) sites. Message 21 is one of 27 different AIS messages, and it is used to provide information about real and virtual aids to navigation (AtoNs). Virtual AtoNs are broadcast to warn mariners of hazards like temporary construction zones or submerged debris that may not be marked with a physical buoy. In this study, message 21 was broadcast from different shore-based AIS transceiver sites along the river. Equipment onboard the patrol vessel Pathfinder was monitored for receipt of message 21 during patrols on the Mississippi River that ranged from Lock and Dam (L&D) 22 to Cairo, Illinois, with the confluence of the Ohio River. The Pathfinder is owned by the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and is based out of the St. Louis District (MVS). Understanding where vessels receive, or do not receive, message 21 has important implications for maritime safety in this heavily traveled portion of the inland waterway system.

As a result of the refugee reception crisis in 2015 the advocacy for increasing resettlement numbers in the overall refugee protection framework has gained momentum, as has research on resettlement to the EU. While the UNHCR purports resettlement as a durable solution for the international protection of refugees, resettlement programmes to the European Union are seen as a pillar of the external dimension of the EU’s asylum and migration policies and management. This paper presents and discusses the literature regarding the value transmissions taking place within these programmes. It reviews literature on the European resettlement process – ranging from the selection of refugees to be resettled, the information and training they receive prior to travelling to their new country of residence, their reception upon arrival, their placement and dispersal in the receiving state, as well as programs of private and community sponsorship. The literature shows that even if resettlement can be considered an external dimension of European migration policy, this process does not end at the border. Rather, resettlement entails particular forms of reception, placement and dispersal as well as integration practices that refugees are confronted with once they arrive in their resettlement country. These practices should thus be understood in the context of the resettlement regime as a whole. In this paper we map out where and how values (here understood as ideas about how something should be) and norms (expectations or rules that are socially enforced) are transmitted within this regime. ‘Value transmission’ is here understood in a broad sense, taking into account the values that are directly transmitted through information and education programmes, as well as those informing practices and actors’ decisions. Identifying how norms and values figure in the resettlement regime aid us in further understanding decision making processes, policy making, and the on-the-ground work of practitioners that influence refugees’ lives. An important finding in this literature review is that vulnerability is a central notion in international refugee protection, and even more so in resettlement. Ideas and practices regarding vulnerability are, throughout the resettlement regime, in continuous tension with those of security, integration, and of refugees’ own agency. The literature review and our discussion serve as a point of departure for developing further investigations into the external dimension of value transmission, which in turn can add insights into the role of norms and values in the making and un-making of (external) boundaries/borders.

Objectives. To evaluate the effectiveness and comparative effectiveness of pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic therapies for the acute treatment of episodic migraine in adults. Data sources. MEDLINE®, Embase®, Cochrane Central Registrar of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, PsycINFO®, Scopus, and various grey literature sources from database inception to July 24, 2020. Comparative effectiveness evidence about triptans and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) was extracted from existing systematic reviews. Review methods. We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and comparative observational studies that enrolled adults who received an intervention to acutely treat episodic migraine. Pairs of independent reviewers selected and appraised studies. Results. Data on triptans were derived from 186 RCTs summarized in nine systematic reviews (101,276 patients; most studied was sumatriptan, followed by zolmitriptan, eletriptan, naratriptan, almotriptan, rizatriptan, and frovatriptan). Compared with placebo, triptans resolved pain at 2 hours and 1 day, and increased the risk of mild and transient adverse events (high strength of the body of evidence [SOE]). Data on NSAIDs were derived from five systematic reviews (13,214 patients; most studied was ibuprofen, followed by diclofenac and ketorolac). Compared with placebo, NSAIDs probably resolved pain at 2 hours and 1 day, and increased the risk of mild and transient adverse events (moderate SOE). For other interventions, we included 135 RCTs and 6 comparative observational studies (37,653 patients). Compared with placebo, antiemetics (low SOE), dihydroergotamine (moderate to high SOE), ergotamine plus caffeine (moderate SOE), and acetaminophen (moderate SOE) reduced acute pain. Opioids were evaluated in 15 studies (2,208 patients).Butorphanol, meperidine, morphine, hydromorphone, and tramadol in combination with acetaminophen may reduce pain at 2 hours and 1 day, compared with placebo (low SOE). Some opioids may be less effective than some antiemetics or dexamethasone (low SOE). No studies evaluated instruments for predicting risk of opioid misuse, opioid use disorder, or overdose, or evaluated risk mitigation strategies to be used when prescribing opioids for the acute treatment of episodic migraine. Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) receptor antagonists improved headache relief at 2 hours and increased the likelihood of being headache-free at 2 hours, at 1 day, and at 1 week (low to high SOE). Lasmiditan (the first approved 5-HT1F receptor agonist) restored function at 2 hours and resolved pain at 2 hours, 1 day, and 1 week (moderate to high SOE). Sparse and low SOE suggested possible effectiveness of dexamethasone, dipyrone, magnesium sulfate, and octreotide. Compared with placebo, several nonpharmacologic treatments may improve various measures of pain, including remote electrical neuromodulation (moderate SOE), magnetic stimulation (low SOE), acupuncture (low SOE), chamomile oil (low SOE), external trigeminal nerve stimulation (low SOE), and eye movement desensitization re-processing (low SOE). However, these interventions, including the noninvasive neuromodulation devices, have been evaluated only by single or very few trials. Conclusions. A number of acute treatments for episodic migraine exist with varying degrees of evidence for effectiveness and harms. Use of triptans, NSAIDs, antiemetics, dihydroergotamine, CGRP antagonists, and lasmiditan is associated with improved pain and function. The evidence base for many other interventions for acute treatment, including opioids, remains limited.

This report summarizes the activities of the IDB Cultural Center in 2005. During 2005, the Cultural Center (CCN) exceeded its four primary objectives, all aligned with the Bank's Communications Strategy, and increased the number of partners for outreach of its activities, constituency and press reception. The 2005 Cultural Development Program (CDP), launched its call for proposals in October, 2004; 911 proposals were subsequently received and screened by the 26 Country Offices in cooperation with the CCN. Also in 2005, the CCN was the main sponsor of the Latin American Pavilion at the 51st Venice Biennial, the oldest and most important artistic event in the world, making participation possible for twelve countries of the Region that do not have regular access to the Biennial.
