Abstract (sommario):
The target simulation of airplanes is an important research topic. It is particularly important to find the right balance between high performance and low cost. In order to balance the contradictions between realistic target simulations and controllable costs, the scientific formulation of the performance parameters of target simulation is the key to achieving high performance. This paper proposes an intelligent simulation technology based on RCS imaging simulation through the combination of 60° variation corner reflector and a Luneberg lens reflector. It is designed to simulate several important RCS characteristics of the aircraft. At the same time, the different RCS images are automatically shifted to the corresponding gear position to achieve the purpose of simulation, and the price is low and the performance is good. It can be used for the training of radar target searching.

Abstract (sommario):
In this paper, a simulation method of detection probability of aircraft target for Over-The-Horizon Radar (OTHR) by computer is proposed. The effects of different ionosphere states on detection range for OTHR is concluded, which become constraint on simulation of detection probability. Taking variety of target RCS with attitude during flight through given track into consideration, simulation model of target dynamic RCS is established. Models of instantaneous detection probability and comprehensive detection probability are also presented. Then, detection probability of aircraft can be obtained through utilizing all models above based on given calculation steps. Simulations show that ionosphere state and target RCS have a great influence on detection probability.

Abstract (sommario):
The simulation of radar cross-section (RCS) models in FPGA is illustrated. The models adopted are the Swerling ones. Radar cross-section (RCS) which is also termed as echo area gives the amount of scattered power from a target towards the radar. This paper elucidates the simulation of RCS to represent the specified targets under different conditions, namely, aspect angle and frequency. This model is used for the performance evaluation of radar. RCS models have been developed for various targets like simple objects to complex objects like aircrafts, missiles, tanks, and so forth. First, the model was developed in MATLAB real time simulation environment and after successful verification, the same was implemented in FPGA. Xilinx ISE software was used for VHDL coding. This simulation model was used for the testing of a radar system. The results were compared with MATLAB simulations and FPGA based timing diagrams and RTL synthesis. The paper illustrates the simulation of various target radar cross-section (RCS) models. These models are simulated in MATLAB and in FPGA, with the aim of implementing them efficiently on a radar system. This method can be generalized to apply to objects of arbitrary geometry for the two configurations of transmitter and receiver in the same as well as different locations.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract A research on RCS simulations and analysis of a diamond-shaped thermal jacket was carried out, to make thermal jackets on tanks less detectable to known radar observation methods. Based on the principles of radar stealth technology, a diamond-shaped thermal jacket was modeled. The RCS simulation models were established by employing the physical optics method (PO), the monostatic RCS characteristics of the diamond-shaped thermal jacket at high frequency region was investigated, and the major components affecting the radar scattering characteristics were evaluated. The original end part played a major role in the radar scattering characteristics of the diamond-shaped thermal jacket. The RCS simulation of thermal jackets in various shapes, including the cylinder-shaped, the original diamond-shaped, and the diamond-shaped without the original end part are carried out, and a comparative evaluation of the schemes is provided. The results show that trans-shaping the cylinder-shaped model to the diamond-shaped model is a method to effectively reduce the average RCS of the thermal jackets in the frontal and lateral directions, improve the overall stealth performance of tank guns. The work is beneficial for design and evaluation concerning about the shape stealth technology of thermal jackets for gun barrels.

Abstract (sommario):
The emergence and popularization of various fifth-generation fighter jets with supersonic cruise, super maneuverability, and stealth functionalities have raised higher and more comprehensive challenges for the tactical performance and operational indicators of air defense weapon systems. The training of air defense systems requires simulated targets; however, the traditional targets cannot simulate the radar cross-section (RCS) distribution characteristics of fifth-generation fighter aircrafts. In addition, the existing target aircrafts are expensive and cannot be mass-produced. Therefore, in this paper, a corner reflector and a Luneburg ball reflector with RCS distribution characteristics of a fifth-generation fighter in a certain spatial area are designed for target simulation. Several corner reflectors and Luneburg balls are used to form an array to realize the simulations. The RCS value and distribution characteristics of the target can be combined with fuzzy clustering and a single-chip microcomputer to design an intelligent switching system, which improves the practicability of the intelligent target design proposed in this paper.

Abstract (sommario):
CR-InSAR is developing continuously in recent years. It is an important technology in the field of monitoring crustal micro-deformation. Radar cross section of corner reflector is an important work foundation because only radar cross section of artificial corner reflector achieves maximum, it is easier to recognize it from SAR image and increase monitoring accuracy. Dihedral corner reflector is the simplest type in proving ground of Northwest of Beijing; its RCS research is a beneficial attempt helping to build up reasonable corner reflector layout. In the paper, establishing geometric model and subdivision model of dihedral corner reflector are based on FEKO software, and choosing physical optics to simulate RCS. The simulation result is good consistency with theoretical max value. Through analyzing RCS curve, it can help to provide guidance on how to set up corner reflector in the proving ground.

Abstract (sommario):
In this study, the problems encountered in radar cross-section (RCS) measurement experiments utilizing a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma system are examined and an effective solution is proposed. A DBD plasma system generates heat due to the high bias voltage required for plasma generation. The thermal-induced structural deformation of the DBD structure caused by this high voltage and its impact on RCS measurements are analyzed. In addition, techniques for minimizing the thermal-induced deformation and compensation methods for addressing the minimized deformation are proposed. Furthermore, RCS measurements are conducted on two kinds of DBD structures using the proposed method to experimentally demonstrate the improved agreement between the simulation and measurement results. For both structures, the RCS experimental results are in very good agreement with the simulation results, which enables accurate plasma characterization. In conclusion, it can be expected that the proposed method can be used to provide more accurate RCS measurements on various DBD structures that generate high heat.

Abstract (sommario):
During the early stage of reusable launch vehicle (RLV) reentry flight, reaction control system (RCS) is the major attitude control device. RCS, which is much different from the atmospheric steer’s control, requires a well designed control allocation system to fit the attitude control in high altitude. In this paper, an indexed control method was proposed for RCS preallocation, a 0-1 integer programming algorithm was designed for RCS allocation controller, and then this RCS scheme’s effect was analyzed. Based on the specified flight mission simulation, the results show that the control system is satisfied. Moreover, several comparisons between the attitude control effect and RCS relevant parameters were studied.

Wind-turbine power provides energy-independence and greenhouse-gas reduction benefits, but if wind turbines are built near military and commercial radar and communication installations, they can cause degradation in the systems performance. The purpose of this research is to study the radar cross section (RCS) of a wind turbine and assess its effect on the performance of radar and communication systems. In this research, some basic scattering characteristics of wind turbines are discussed. Several computational methods of RCS prediction are examined, citing their advantages and disadvantages. Modeling and computational issues that affect the accuracy and convergence of the simulation results are discussed. RCS simulation results for two wind turbine configurations are presented: a horizontal axis, three-blade design and a vertical axis helical design. Several methods of mitigating wind turbine clutter are discussed. Issues of RCS reduction and control for wind turbines are also addressed.

Abstract (sommario):
When designing military vehicles, it is of interest to make the vehicles difficult to detect using radar. The radar cross-section (RCS) property indicates how easily a vehicle is detected by radar and should thus be minimized. However, the RCS of a vehicle represents the cross-sectional area of a perfectly reflecting sphere that would produce the same reflection strength as the vehicle in question. Since this is extremely complicated to calculate as military vehicles are quite complex, these calculations are performed using computational simulations. BAE Systems Hägglunds is looking into changing from their current simulation software OPTISCAT to CST Studio Suite and thus want to know how CST performs and compares against OPTISCAT. In this work, we show that CST obtains results within 2% of theoretical data when simulating a sphere and a slab. When simulating vehicles, the RCS difference between the two software is from 3% to 55% while showing similar general behavior. Results indicate that CST performs well when simulating simple objects but deviates from OPTISCAT when simulating the vehicle. It is not surprising that the software does not match up perfectly since they use different theoretical approaches, OPTISCAT uses physical optics while CST an extension to physical optics called the Shooting Bouncing Ray method. Even though the software differs to this extent it is most likely possible that CST can be a suitable replacement for OPTISCAT. When looking at RCS the important part is the location of spikes and since they have similar general behavior, those spikes may still be possible to identify. This thesis will hopefully act as a starting point for further examination of CST as a software for simulating RCS, for example by comparing results from CST to experimentally measured data. Hopefully it will also be used to improve the design process of making military vehicles harder to detect.

Abstract (sommario):

This thesis has been carried out in collaboration with Löfqvist Engineering in Örebro. The task has been to perform a simulation of a large automation line, to be used in the manufacture of exhaust systems for trucks. Based on this simulation accurate cycle times for production are determined. These times can then be used by Löfqvist Engineering to verify the earlier estimated times. The work includes a literature review of Lean Production and how it works with automation. There is also some background information on Just In Time, different file formats and robot simulation in general for the reader to get a bit more background knowledge of the subject. The program that has been selected to perform the simulation is Tecnomatix Process Simulate and its built in Line Simulation module. The automation line consists of four handling robots, 13 operator stations and eight identical welding cells. Cycle times for the automation line have been determined and the result was 6 min 31s, for the automation line to complete one product. Cycle times were determined by calculating the average time to produce 10 pieces of products when the line was full of material. The report describes how the work for arriving at these cycle times have been performed and how simulation problems encountered during such operations have been resolved.

Abstract (sommario):
Rigorous numerical methods are used to compute an accurate wideband radar cross section (RCS) evaluation of large complex targets. Among these, finite differences in time domain method is appropriated for the wideband characteristic and also to obtain a transient responses of the target. The Yee scheme, known historically as an FDTD scheme for Maxwell equations, is hindered by two crucial weak points: numerical dispersion which imposes a high mesh resolution; and staircase approximation of curve geometry which deteriorates results quality. High-order space differential operator for FDTD schemes have been investigated to limit numerical dispersion errors. In this thesis, the Conservative Modified FDTD(2,4) scheme has been developed and its performance has shown very accurate results with reasonable workload for RCS computation. Relating to curve geometry modeling problem, metallic edges modeling is still an unsolved problem for FDTD(2,4) schemes with enlarged stencil. Conformal techniques have been developed for the Yee scheme and has been studied for FDTD(2,4) to accurately model curve geometry. We propose a new approach based on oblique thin wire model to model metallic surfaces. RCS computations of several targets have shown that this method is promising

Abstract (sommario):
The work presented in this thesis concerns the development of an automotive radar target simulator for 77 GHz radar sensors. In order to continue offering safer vehicles, manufacturers develop more and more performant ADAS systems. We are witnessing a democratization of automotive radar sensors for adaptive cruise control and collision warning. The generalization of such systems on standard cars will require an increased use of test devices both at the manufacturers and in technical control centers. To test and calibrate radars, it is necessary to use Radar Target Simulators (RTS). These devices enable to simulate situations encountered by the radar. Furthermore, these scenarios are becoming increasingly complex with the arrival of autonomous vehicles. A target is defined by three parameters: distance, velocity and radar cross-section (RCS). In order to meet drastic requirements, ZF TRW Autocruise develops its own RTS for production test benches and R&D. RTS must adapt to all radars within a 76 – 81 GHz frequency band, with different modulations and a frequency bandwidth higher than 800 MHz. The system must present the advantages of being a low-cost system, with small dimensions and flexible to be integrated in different applications. The major blocking point is the design of a reconfigurable delay line, able to simulate distances between 1 m and 250 m with a resolution of 0.2 m on a large frequency band and also allowing control of RCS. A compromise will have to be found in order to meet the different specifications. The study showed the impossibility to cover the entire range of distances with one single technology. A hybrid architecture is necessary. A hybrid, tunable, wideband delay line is at study

Abstract (sommario):
This article discusses the use of Bayesian causal inference, and more specifically the posterior predictive approach of Rubin’s causal model (RCM) and methods of principal stratification, in estimating the effects of ‘treating hospital type’ on cancer survival. Using the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, as a case study, the article investigates which type of hospital (large patient volume vs. small volume) is superior for treating certain serious conditions. The study examines which factors may reasonably be considered ignorable in the context of covariates available, as well as non-compliance complications due to transfers between hospital types for treatment. The article first provides an overview of the general Bayesian approach to causal inference, primarily with ignorable treatment assignment, before introducing the proposed approach and motivating it using simple method-of-moments summary statistics. Finally, the results of simulation using Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods are presented.

Abstract (sommario):
The modeling of climate over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) started with the introduction of Global Climate Models (GCMs) in the 1950s. Since then, GCMs have been developed to simulate atmospheric dynamics and eventually the climate system. As the highest and widest international plateau, the strong orographic forcing caused by the TP and its impact on general circulation rather than regional climate was initially the focus. Later, with growing awareness of the incapability of GCMs to depict regional or local-scale atmospheric processes over the heterogeneous ground, coupled with the importance of this information for local decision-making, regional climate models (RCMs) were established in the 1970s. Dynamic and thermodynamic influences of the TP on the East and South Asia summer monsoon have since been widely investigated by model. Besides the heterogeneity in topography, impacts of land cover heterogeneity and change on regional climate were widely modeled through sensitivity experiments. In recent decades, the TP has experienced a greater warming than the global average and those for similar latitudes. GCMs project a global pattern where the wet gets wetter and the dry gets drier. The climate regime over the TP covers the extreme arid regions from the northwest to the semi-humid region in the southeast. The increased warming over the TP compared to the global average raises a number of questions. What are the regional dryness/wetness changes over the TP? What is the mechanism of the responses of regional changes to global warming? To answer these questions, several dynamical downscaling models (DDMs) using RCMs focusing on the TP have recently been conducted and high-resolution data sets generated. All DDM studies demonstrated that this process-based approach, despite its limitations, can improve understandings of the processes that lead to precipitation on the TP. Observation and global land data assimilation systems both present more wetting in the northwestern arid/semi-arid regions than the southeastern humid/semi-humid regions. The DDM was found to better capture the observed elevation dependent warming over the TP. In addition, the long-term high-resolution climate simulation was found to better capture the spatial pattern of precipitation and P-E (precipitation minus evapotranspiration) changes than the best available global reanalysis. This facilitates new and substantial findings regarding the role of dynamical, thermodynamics, and transient eddies in P-E changes reflected in observed changes in major river basins fed by runoff from the TP. The DDM was found to add value regarding snowfall retrieval, precipitation frequency, and orographic precipitation.Although these advantages in the DDM over the TP are evidenced, there are unavoidable facts to be aware of. Firstly, there are still many discrepancies that exist in the up-to-date models. Any uncertainty in the model’s physics or in the land information from remote sensing and the forcing could result in uncertainties in simulation results. Secondly, the question remains of what is the appropriate resolution for resolving the TP’s heterogeneity. Thirdly, it is a challenge to include human activities in the climate models, although this is deemed necessary for future earth science. All-embracing further efforts are expected to improve regional climate models over the TP.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractModern training simulators core models are required to replicate plant data for neutronic response. Replication is required such that reactivity manipulation on the simulator properly trains the operator for reactivity manipulation at the plant. This paper discusses advanced models which perform this function in real-time using S3R, the real-time, time-dependent core model of the Studsvik Core Management System (CMS). This paper also discusses the coupled multi-physics of the Reactor Coolant System (RCS) model, using RELAP5 as a prototype. Finally, this paper discusses the implementation of S3R under the control of a server-based executive environment and instructor station, essential for training simulator applications.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractIn Ras Al Khaimah, UAE, groundwater from the alluvial aquifer in Wadi Bih was the only source of freshwater for various uses prior to the construction of a seawater desalination plant in 1998. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of the Wadi Bih dam on groundwater resources and to increase knowledge of the hydrodynamics of the aquifer. A local-scale numerical groundwater flow model was developed and used to investigate the impacts of different groundwater management options on groundwater resources. The calibrated and validated model was defined as the base case, and subsequently, simulations were performed to analyze different management scenarios. The simulations indicated that maximum recharge occurred during years of high rainfall (1995–1998). Minimum recharge occurred in 2000, 2002, and 2004. The major contribution to the water balance was from subsurface inflows from the upper wadi zone and the two tributaries. Overall, the annual water balance was negative in most years, with an average net decline of 0.6 MCM per year, indicating a slow but continuous depletion of groundwater resources. At the end of the simulation, the total groundwater recharge due to rainfall and water storage in the ponding area was 9.81 MCM.

Abstract (sommario):
The drainage challenges of a large settlement encompass both urban areas and adjacent agricultural and industrial zones. Surface runoff from increasingly impermeable subcatchments flows into the underground gravitational closed conduits drainage network of the settlement during rapid storm events, a phenomenon effectively modeled using hydrodynamic simulation tools such as SWMM. Meanwhile, excess precipitation water that fails to infiltrate the soil accumulates predominantly on agricultural lands outside the settlement, necessitating drainage through gravitational open channels. Typically, pumping stations are deployed to provide the requisite external energy. Steady flow simulation models like HEC-RAS are applied to accurately simulate water flow in open channels during longer water stagnation periods. Integrating the drainage systems of urban runoff and stagnant water is essential for capturing dynamic events effectively. This integration involves coupling unsteady models like HEC-RAS with hydrodynamic urban SWMM simulations. The resulting integrated model enables comprehensive simulation of the entire drainage network, facilitating predictions of system capacity during storm events, including periods of water stagnation.

Abstract (sommario):
In this paper, an automated framework is presented to perform helicopter rotor blade planform optimization. This framework contains three elements, Dakota, ParBlade, and RCAS. These elements are integrated into an environment control tool, Galaxy Simulation Builder, which is used to carry out the optimization. The main objective of this work is to conduct rotor performance design optimizations for forward flight and hover. The blade design variables manipulated by ParBlade are twist, sweep, and anhedral. The multi-objective genetic algorithm method is used in this study to search for the optimum blade design; the optimization objective is to minimize the rotor power required. Following design parameter substitution, ParBlade generates the modified blade shape and updates the rotor blade properties in the RCAS script before running RCAS. After the RCAS simulations are complete, the desired performance metrics (objectives and constraints) are extracted and returned to the Dakota optimizer. Demonstrative optimization case studies were conducted using a UH-60A main rotor as the base case. Rotor power in hover and forward flight, at advance ratio 𝜇𝜇 = 0.3, are used as objective functions. The results of this study show improvement in rotor power of 6.13% and 8.52% in hover and an advance ratio of 0.3, respectively. This configuration also yields greater reductions in rotor power for high advance ratios, e.g., 12.42% reduction at 𝜇𝜇 = 0.4.

Abstract (sommario):
Near-fault earthquakes can have major effects on transportation systems due to the structural damage they impose on bridges. Therefore, it is imperative to assess the seismic damage of bridges appropriately, and this research focuses on reinforced concrete (RC) bridges. This research advances the seismic performance assessment of RC single-column pier-supported bridges with flexural failure under near-fault ground motion by use of ductility coefficients and damage indices. The methodology included modeling fiber-based nonlinear beam-column elements to simulate the damage development process of RC bridge piers under earthquake loadings, considering the global buckling of longitudinal steel bars, examining the cracking and spalling of cover concrete, and analyzing the effects of bond-slip. The tensile strain represented the damage of the longitudinal bars while the compression strain represented the cover concrete damage. Two innovative nonlinear fiber-based finite element models (FEMs) were developed: Model 1 (bond-slip excluded) and Model 2 (bond-slip included). Nonlinear static cyclic pushover analyses and nonlinear response history analyses were conducted. The simulation results were compared with available pseudo-dynamic test results. Model 1 provided a more ideal prognosis on the seismic performance of RC single-column pier-supported bridges under near-fault ground motion. The proposed damage indices can indicate the damage state at any stage and the gradual accumulation of damage in RC bridge piers, which are more convincing than most other indices in the literature. The proposed fiber-based nonlinear FEMs, together with the use of ductility coefficients and proposed damage indices, can also assist engineers and researchers in simulating the seismic behavior and assessing the damage state of RC bridge columns in a computationally effective manner which can empower engineers to identify and prioritize RC bridges for seismic retrofit and maintenance.
