Abstract (sommario):
This note presents an optimal design method to enhance image quality in optical image stabilization (OIS) systems. First of all, performance limitations of conventional methods are shown and secondly, a new design framework based on convex optimization is proposed. The resulting controller essentially stabilizes the closed loop systems because the proposed method is derived from Lyapunov stability. From the test results, it is confirmed that this method reduces the effect of hand vibrations and makes images sharp. Additionally, it is shown that the proposed method is also effective in robot vision and recognition rate of deep neural network (DNN) based traffic signs and pedestrians detection in automotive applications. This note has three main contributions. First, performance limitations of the conventional method are shown. Second, from the relation between sensitivity and complementary sensitivity functions, an indirect design method for performance improvement is proposed, and finally, stability guaranteed optimal design is proposed. Unlike conventional methods, the proposed method does not require addition filters to suppress resonances of the plant and this note highlights phases of the closed loop systems on removing external vibrations.

Abstract (sommario):
A review of foreign and Russian research on the problems of assessing the quality of education at the institutional level is undertaken. Various aspects of the problem including the cross-country and sub-national contexts, the impact of international comparative research about in-school assessment, and teachers’ training in working with assessment data are compared. The effect of regional policies on the development of internal education quality evaluation systems in Russian schools is studied through analyzing official departmental websites. Expert evaluation method and the concordance coefficient are used to determine the key factors of the internal quality assessment system in general education institutions. The authors go beyond the control and inspection paradigm of education quality management and consider said systems from the point of the information-analytical paradigm. Data-driven management involves using data analysis and interpretation to predict students’ progress and motivational choice of educational profiles to design the content of electronic educational environments and individual educational trajectories.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present an empirical study which examines the relationships among design-driven innovation, quality and customer value in manufacturing companies. Design/methodology/approach A research project was carried out in 193 Italian manufacturing companies, using the questionnaire method. An exploratory research study was conducted with hierarchical cluster analysis and regression analysis. Findings The analysis shows the existence of four clusters of manufacturing companies which differ by firm size, expenditure in innovation and type of innovation. Furthermore, the elements of a quality product and a design product have a significant impact on customer value, and the importance of these elements changes within the different cluster. Research limitations/implications The small size of the sample and the geographic origin of companies imply limited generalizability and further research on the topic is recommended. Practical implications The study suggests that companies should simultaneously pursue quality and innovation to increase customer value. To achieve high levels of innovation, and thus increase their quality standards, manufacturing companies should consider the importance of the elements related to design which have impact on customer value. Originality/value Focusing on the relationship between design-driven innovation and quality which has not yet been investigated, the present study reveals many common elements of product design and quality product and their positive influence on the perception of customer value.

Abstract (sommario):
Real-time applications managing a large number of real-time data require the use of Real-time Database Management Systems (RTDBMS) to meet temporal constraints of both real-time data and transactions. However, a RTDBMS has a dynamic workload and may be frequently overloaded since the arrival times and workloads of user transactions are unpredictable. Therefore, Quality of Service management solutions have been proposed to guarantee the stability of RTDBMS even during unpredictable overload periods. While effective, the design and reuse of these solutions is challenging because they are not formally modeled and there is no tool neither a methodology that helps us design such solutions. To address these issues, the authors propose a design framework based on the Model-Driven Engineering approach providing a modeling architecture, a strategic methodology and a software tool to support modeling and reusing such solutions. The framework is implemented and tested for a real Qos management solution.

Abstract (sommario):
A load and resistance factor design (LRFD) bridge specification has been accepted by the AASHTO Bridge Committee. This design approach is now being implemented for highway bridges in the United States, including the design of driven pile foundations. To test the new specification's practicality and usefulness, an example problem has been solved using it. In the example, a pipe pile was designed to be driven into a granular soil to support a bridge column subjected to a factored axial compression load of 10 MN. The nominal strength selected for the pile was 1.58 MN with an estimated length of 25 m. Since the resistance factors are defined by the specified quality control procedures, the number of piles required in the foundation also depends on the quality control. In this example, the number of piles required varied from 15 to 8 with improved quality control, for a savings of almost half of the piles. This example indicated that the new AASHTO LRFD specification for driven pile design can be used effectively to produce a more rationally designed foundation. Some modifications should be made to include additional serviceability limit states, and additional research may indicate that changes should be made in some of the resistance factors.

Abstract (sommario):
Throughout the 20th century, the notion of ‘quality’ underwent major changes. The concept of ‘Quality by Testing’, i.e. evaluating the quality of a product by testing it for some pre-defined parameters after completing the manufacturing process, started to be replaced by the enhanced approach of Quality by Design (QbD). In this concept, idealized by Joseph Juran [1], quality is initially conceived for the product, and then the product is manufactured and evaluated to reach that quality. Driven by the need to reduce costs and to encourage companies to improve their understanding of their products and manufacturing processes, pharmaceutical regulatory agencies, through the ICH (International Council on Harmonization), published the ICH Q8 guideline, highlighting the QbD strategy for pharmaceutical development [2]. This represented a significant step in replacing the existing quality paradigms in the conventional manufacturing of pharmaceutical products and paved the way to support development and production activities within a scientific, flexible environment, with a high level of quality, without the need for extensive regulatory surveillance. The higher level of understanding gained during development allows out-of-specification batches to be foreseen and ensures that the desired quality will be obtained at the end of the manufacturing process. The two pillars of the QbD concept are quality risk management and multivariate study of the outcomes (quality parameters) as functions of the inputs (materials, formulation and process inputs). At this point, Chemometrics emerged officially as a strategy to support the pharma regulatory requirements- the beginning of a joyful and long-life union.

Abstract (sommario):
Riveted joints are extensively adopted in designing aircraft structures. Riveting implies a squeezing process of the rivet with large plastic deformations to form the driven rivet head. The driven rivet head dimensions (height H, diameter D) depend on riveting force ( X1), rivet length and diameter tolerance ( X2 and X3), as well as rivet hole tolerance ( X4). Incorrect selection in these parameters could induce the excessive stress concentration that results in initial crack and also results in improper rivet head deformation leading to loose rivet. The present research is conducted on a MS2047AD6-6 rivet and 2.286 mm thick aluminum alloy sheets and mainly focuses on the design of riveting parameters X1, X2, X3, and X4 using the proposed three-step statistical experiment designs including fractional factorial design, steepest ascent design, and central composite design while satisfying the quality requirements for driven rivet head dimensions ( H, D) mentioned in Standard Aircraft Handbook. Fractional factorial design is used to evaluate the impact of riveting parameters X1, X2, X3, and X4 on H and D. Based on the effective ranges of the significant riveting parameters obtained from steepest ascent design, a five-level central composite design is proposed to derive the statistical relations between H, D and the significant riveting parameters, and the statistical models are used to find the feasible region resulting from the combination of the significant riveting parameters while satisfying the quality requirements for H and D. Finally, the feasible ranges of X1, X2, X3, and X4, namely [16,470 N 22,730 N], [−0.1491 mm 0.3891 mm], [−0.0466 mm 0.1216 mm], and [−0.0375 mm 0.2125 mm], are determined from the perspective of adjustable accuracy of X1 and that of the manufacturability for X2, X3, and X4. It implies that any combination of X1, X2, X3, and X4 that falls within this feasible region can result in a good quality riveted joins, namely that the quality requirements for the driven riveting head dimension ( H, D) can be satisfied.

Abstract (sommario):
Traditional simulation mechanisms are unable to meet the simulation requirements of spacecraft launcher in low-gravity environment, like in the Moon. Based on the advantages of wire-driven parallel mechanism, a 6-DOF low-gravity environment simulation device with eight wires is designed in this paper. Firstly, the configuration and dimensional design of this wire-driven parallel mechanism are carried out. To operate and control the wire-driven parallel mechanism, a force distribution algorithm is introduced and the workspace is analyzed. Then, an evaluation index named quality index is established in order to study the performance of the wire-driven parallel manipulator in its workspace and reasonable tension is obtained after analyzing the influence on quality index caused by different wire tension.

Abstract (sommario):
This text mainly completed the design of rice transplanters transplanting mechanism and the driving mechanism. Transplanting mechanism, the main working parts in rice transplanter, determines the quality and efficiency of mechanical planting. The paper adopts the crank rocker mechanism as a transplanting mechanism with a simple design and a high quality of planting. Driving mechanism can make the device operate accurately and reliably in a given trajectory and state. The driving mechanism driven by the diesel engine will transmit the power to the worm shaft through the coupler. Operated by the worm gear and worm drive, the power will be transmitted to the crank on the crank rocker of the transplanting mechanism through the chain transmission, making the cranks planting action in a given fixed path, then ensuring that the seedling smoothly and inserted straightly.

Abstract (sommario):
Nanoparticle research and development for pharmaceuticals is a challenging task in the era of personalized medicine. Specialized and increased patient expectations and requirements for proper therapy adherence, as well as sustainable environment safety and toxicology topics raise the necessity of well designed, advanced and smart drug delivery systems on the market. These stakeholder expectations and social responsibility of pharma sector open the space and call new methods on the floor for new strategic development tools, like Quality by Design (QbD) thinking. The extended model, namely the R&D QbD proved to be useful in case of complex and/or high risk/expectations containing or aiming developments. This is the case when we formulate polymeric micelles as promising nanotherapeutics; the risk assessment and knowledge-based quality targeted QbD approach provides a promising tool to support the development process. Based on risk assessment, many factors pose great risk in the manufacturing process and affect the quality, efficacy and safety profile. The quality-driven strategic development pathway, based on deep prior knowledge and an involving iterative risk estimation and management phases has proven to be an adequate tool, being able to handle their sensitive stability issues and make them efficient therapeutic aids in case of several diseases.

Abstract (sommario):
Clinical practice guideline development should be driven by rigorous methodology, but what is less clear is where quality improvement enters the process: should it be a priority-guiding force, or should it enter only after recommendations are formulated? We argue for a stakeholder-driven approach to guideline development, with an overriding goal of quality improvement based on stakeholder perceptions of needs, uncertainties, and knowledge gaps. In contrast, the widely used topic-driven approach, which often makes recommendations based only on randomized controlled trials, is driven by epidemiologic purity and evidence rigor, with quality improvement a downstream consideration. The advantages of a stakeholder-driven versus a topic-driven approach are highlighted by comparisons of guidelines for otitis media with effusion, thyroid nodules, sepsis, and acute bacterial rhinosinusitis. These comparisons show that stakeholder-driven guidelines are more likely to address the quality improvement needs and pressing concerns of clinicians and patients, including understudied populations and patients with multiple chronic conditions. Conversely, a topic-driven approach often addresses “typical” patients, based on research that may not reflect the needs of high-risk groups excluded from studies because of ethical issues or a desire for purity of research design.

Abstract (sommario):
This article reports on the experience of co-designing an educational video game aimed at promoting good dietary habits in youngsters and fostering Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), such as SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). To ensure the quality of the results, we developed a methodology under a social innovation paradigm that enabled the co-creation of the game. The methodology was driven by a series of three workshops, during which we adopted several different gamification strategies to support a Participatory Design (PD) process with the stakeholders, a group of local pre-teen and teen girls at social risk (N = 22). Captured requirements materialized into intermediate prototype evaluations that motivated a progressive refinement of the game.

Abstract (sommario):
Quality control at all stages of the polygraphic process will allow to establish a feedback between technological processes of printing. The validity of the selected criteria, technological effectiveness and objectivity of the quality assessment methods will allow to organise technically accurate modelling of the processes as well as to promptly interfere with the production process if necessary. The tendency of the development of technologies and control tools as well as computer expansion are the reasons why the objectivity and impartiality of the assessment become the main criteria for the choice of method for quality assessment of the polygrafic product. Methodological purpose of the quality control is to make the polygrafic process technologically driven and stable, and the quality of the received print - more predictable.

Abstract (sommario):
The educational institutions must strive to impart quality education and have to create greater satisfaction in their customer group. Quality Function Deployment (QFD) which is a customer driven tool in implementing Total Quality Management (TQM) helps to accomplish this task. One of the phases in QFD methodology is known as House of Quality (HoQ), which is concerned with translating the voice of customer into design requirements by stakeholders. Design requirements will determine how the customer needs are to be fulfilled. This paper presents an integrated methodology (HoQ-ANP) to translate Voices of Customer (VoC) or customer needs (CNs) into design requirements (DRs) and to determine the importance weights of DRs by considering the complex dependency relationships between and within Customer needs and DRs for total quality in engineering education. In order to deal with the vagueness, uncertainty and diversity in dependency relationships fuzzy set theory and group decision-making technique are used to determine the priority structure of CNs, inner dependence among Customer Needs (CNs), Inner dependence among DRs and inter-relationship between CNs & DRs. Prioritization of design requirements for quality engineering education is determined through a case study by employing HoQ-ANP methodology.

Abstract (sommario):
Air quality has had a significant impact on public health, the environment and eventually on the economy of countries for decades. Effectively mitigating air pollution in urban areas necessitates accurate air quality exposure information. Recent advancements in sensor technology and the increasing popularity of volunteered geographic information (VGI) open up new possibilities for air quality exposure assessment in cities. However, citizens and their sensors are put in areas deemed to be subjectively of interest (e.g., where citizens live, school of their kids or working spaces), and this leads to missed opportunities when it comes to optimal air quality exposure assessment. In addition, while the current literature on VGI has extensively discussed data quality and citizen engagement issues, few works, if any, offer techniques to fine-tune VGI contributions for an optimal air quality exposure assessment. This article presents and tests an approach to minimise land use regression prediction errors on citizen-contributed data. The approach was evaluated using a dataset (N = 116 sensors) from the city of Stuttgart, Germany. The comparison between the existing network design and the combination of locations selected by the optimisation method has shown a drop in spatial mean prediction error by 52%. The ideas presented in this article are useful for the systematic deployment of VGI air quality sensors, and can aid in the creation of higher resolution, more realistic maps for air quality monitoring in cities.

Abstract (sommario):
Understanding the voice of the customers (VOCs) and properly incorporating their preferences and perceptions into the conceptual design process is the core step of customer-driven product development. To improve customer satisfaction and market profitability, the design team should have a customer-driven quality management and product development system. Quality function deployment (QFD) is an important customer-driven quality management tool that helps identify customer requirements and translate them into proper technical measures. This paper focuses on the application of the AHP and an entropy-based QFD approach on a manufacturing company to improve the quality of its product (blender) and determine the priorities for further improvement. The paper shows how customer requirements can be identified and applied to prioritize the design requirements for improving the quality of a blender. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is integrated to determine the final importance of the weights of the customer needs, and entropy is used to determine the set of priority ratings. This integrated framework can help achieve an effective evaluation of the final design solution for product development by overcoming the pitfalls of the traditional QFD approach. An application in a Bangladeshi company that produces blenders is presented to illustrate the performance of the proposed approach.

Abstract (sommario):
Designing an ontology that meets the needs of end-users, e.g., a medical team, is critical to support the reasoning with data. Therefore, an ontology design should be driven by the constant and efficient validation of end-users needs. However, there is not an existing standard process in knowledge engineering that guides the ontology design with the required quality. There are several ontology design processes, which range from iterative to sequential, but they fail to ensure the practical application of an ontology and to quantitatively validate end-user requirements through the evolution of an ontology. In this paper, an ontology design process is proposed, which is driven by end-user requirements, defined as Competency Questions (CQs). The process is called CQ-Driven Ontology DEsign Process (CODEP) and it includes activities that validate and verify the incremental design of an ontology through metrics based on defined CQs. CODEP has also been applied in the design and development of an ontology in the context of a Mexican Hospital for supporting Neurologist specialists. The specialists were involved, during the application of CODEP, in collecting quality measurements and validating the ontology increments. This application can demonstrate the feasibility of CODEP to deliver ontologies with similar requirements in other contexts.

Abstract (sommario):
Pile testing using a pile driving analyzer is a nondestructive method of evaluating the support capacity provided by the soil to a pile. The New York State Department of Transportation’s (NYSDOT) approach to incorporating this testing procedure into a project is discussed from design into construction. Specification and contractural responsibilities are addressed, as are typical applications of the test method. By judiciously using dynamic pile testing, NYSDOT is able to cost-effectively link the design process to construction. Informed decisions are possible regarding the field performance of driven piles with respect to pile-soil support capacity, hammer operation, driving stress, damage to piles during driving, and verification of assumptions made for wave equation analysis of piles.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose This paper aims to integrate and examine three loyalty routes (i.e. service quality, emotional attachment and religiosity) in developing customer loyalty towards Islamic banking. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected from 412 Islamic bank customers from Indonesia. Variance-based structural equation modelling was applied to evaluate the association between service quality, emotional attachment, religiosity and customer loyalty. Findings This study reveals that customer loyalty is more driven by emotional attachment and religiosity rather than by perceived service quality. Although not directly affecting customer loyalty, service quality strengthens customer satisfaction towards Islamic banks. Practical implications This study provides an opportunity for Islamic bank managers to increase their customer loyalty through the development of emotional attachment and religiosity. To improve customer loyalty, this study suggests that Islamic banks have to provide prompt, accurate and non-personal service. It is also important for Islamic bank managers to keep the bank operation compliant with the Sharia law. Originality/value This study is the first attempt to assess the three loyalty routes simultaneously in influencing customer loyalty.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze how local and central authorities choose between lowest price and more complex scoring rules when they design supplier-selection mechanisms for public procurements. Five hypotheses are tested: a high level of cost uncertainty and highly non-verifiable quality makes the use of the lowest-price supplier-selection method less likely. Organizational habits and transaction-cost considerations influence the choice of mechanism. Strong quality concerns make complex rules more likely. Design/methodology/approach The analysis departures from normative theory (rational choice) and is based on the regression analysis and survey data comprising a gross sample of 40 contracting authorities and detailed information about 651 procurements. Findings More complex scoring rules are used more often when the authority is uncertain about costs and about delivered quality. Authority effects are also found to directly and indirectly influence the choice of supplier-selection method, suggesting that tendering design is partly driven by local habits and institutional inertia. Practical implications The authors argue that, from a normative point of view, lowest price is an adequate method when the degree of uncertainty is low, for example, because the procured products are standardized and since quality can be verified. When there is significant cost uncertainty, it is better to use the so-called economically most advantageous tender (EMAT) method. (Preferably this should be done by assigning monetary values to different quality levels.) If there is significant uncertainty concerning delivered quality, the contracting authority should retain a degree of discretion, so as to be able to reward good-quality performance in observable but non-verifiable quality dimensions; options to extend the contract and subjective assessments of quality are two possibilities. The main findings are that EMAT and more complex scoring rules are used more often when the contracting authorities report that they experience substantial uncertainty concerning delivered quality and actual costs and that these factors tend to decrease the weight given to price, in line with the predictions. However, the authors also find that this result is mainly driven by variations between authorities, rather than by between-products variation for the same authority. This is from a training of professionals and regulation perspective of policy relevance. Social implications Contract allocation based on habits rather than rational ground could implicate the waste of resources (tax payers money) as it adventures the matching of the preferences of the public sector (the objective, subject matter, of the procurement) and what the potential supplier offers in its tender. Originality/value Although the principles for supplier selection are regulated by law they give the contracting authority substantial freedom in designing the scoring rule and in choosing what quality criteria to use. The tension between different objectives and the more general question whether the choices made by authorities reflect rational decision making or institutional inertia together motivate the current study. While the design of the supplier-selection mechanism is an important consideration in procurement practice, it has attracted relatively little attention from the academic community.

Abstract (sommario):
Nowadays, analog and mixed-signal (AMS) IC designs, mainly found in the frontends of large ICs, are highly dedicated, complex, and costly. They form a bottleneck in the communication with the outside world, determine an upper bound in quality, yield, and flexibility for the IC, and require a significant part of the power dissipation. Operating very close to physical limits, serious boundaries are faced. This paper relates, from a high-level point of view, these boundaries to the Shannon channel capacity and shows how the AMS circuitry forms a matching link in transforming the external analog signals, optimized for the communication medium, to the optimal on-chip signal representation, the digital one, for the IC medium. The signals in the AMS part itself are consequently not optimally matched to the IC medium. To further shift the frontiers of AMS design, a matching-driven design approach is crucial for AMS. Four levels will be addressed: technology-driven, states-driven, redundancy-driven, and nature-driven design. This is done based on an analysis of the various classes of AMS signals and their specific properties, seen from the angle of redundancy. This generic, but abstract way of looking at the design process will be substantiated with many specific examples.
