Abstract This paper concerns a collection of rough-hewn flat stelae excavated from the precinct of Zeus Meilichios in Selinus, Sicily between 1915 and 1926, a majority with two heads or busts, one male and one female, carved at their tops. These crudely fashioned idols are unique in their iconography. They combine the flat inscribed Punic stela with the Greek figural tradition, with some indigenous features. Their meaning is totally obscure – especially since they lack any literary reference. No comparable monuments have been found in ancient Mediterranean cult. The twin stelae were often set up above a collection of burnt rodent and bird bones, ashes, lamps, broken and burnt pottery and terracotta figurines, as a memorial of a sacrifice. The stelae were the objects of a gentilicial cult, similar to that posited for the inscribed “Meilichios stones” with which they shared the Field of Stelae of Zeus Meilichios. The theory advanced here interprets these diminutive stelae (average height 30 cm) as the objects of domestic cult. It was customary in many parts of the ancient Mediterranean, from the Bronze Age down to the Roman period, to venerate household or family gods who protected the health and the wealth of the family. They were thought to embody the spirits of the ancestors and could at times be identified with the gods of the state religion. This divine couple whose effigies were dedicated in the Field of Stelae over a period of four centuries, into the third century, cannot be claimed as Greek or Punic deities. What these nameless protectors of the family were called we cannot say: Meilichios and Meilichia, Father and Mother, or Lord and Lady of the household? As the objects of such a personal domestic cult, their names might have differed with each family.

This paper aims to examine the plant iconographies on Phoenician and Punic funerary and votive stelae. Trees, fruit and flowers are widely attested in the repertoire examined both with symbolic functions and as decorative elements intended to setthe scene

This paper focuses on ideas of body construction in the Phoenician-Punic western Mediterranean. I concentrate on the study of ‘bottle-shaped’ terracottas and examine their connections with anthropomorphized and zoomorphic jugs and the bottle-shaped idol, a symbol engraved on the stelae of tophets. Exploring the Phoenician-Punic isomorphism between jugs, figurines and bodies introduces us to the study of the creation of a specific body world in terms of fluids: a world in which bodies were perceived as containers of liquids. I argue that this way of defining bodies is materialized in the figurines in two ways: first, via the transformation of the body into a bottle-shaped form, and second, via the emphasis on representing mouths, noses, breasts or genitalia, all parts of the body through which fluids circulate. I also examine the social and ritual contexts of the figurines and discuss issues of personhood and relational identities.

AbstractWe describe a remarkable artifact discovered during our 2015 excavations at the Maya site of Nim li Punit, Belize. It is a T-shaped jade pectoral worn on the chest by ancient Maya kings during rites in which they scattered copal incense (Figure 1). These rituals are described or depicted on six carved stone monuments (stelae) at the site. What is more, two stelae at the site depict rulers wearing the pectoral. The reverse side of the jade contains a long historical hieroglyphic text. Had the piece been recovered by illegal means and ended up in a private collection, much of the text would make little sense and it could not possibly be ascribed to Nim li Punit. The priceless worth of the Nim li Punit pectoral, therefore, lies not only in its hieroglyphic inscription but also in its known archaeological context and contemporary images of its use. We briefly describe that context and present a translation of the important text on the jade pectoral, which we interpret as a “wind jewel.”

Western Sicily, and Selinus in particular, was one of the most important contact zones in the Mediterranean between Greek and Phoenician colonists and cultures since the early first millennium BCE. During its archaic and classical floruit, it functioned as a zone of encounter between Greek and Phoenician ritual, especially on the western Gag- gera Hill where a shrine of Meilichios neighbors a temple of Demeter Malophoros. Ritual practices, artifacts and inscriptions support the etymological connection between Meilichios and Semitic Molech that make this cult Near Eastern (Semitic) in origin, introduced via Phoenicians to Greeks at Selinus. The archaic “Triolo” temple with triple stelai, found south of this complex, resembles closely the Greco-Phoenician shrine at Kommos in Crete, and reinforces the impression of early Semitic influence into worship on the hill west of the Selinus acropolis. Such archaeological convergences in ritual space complement evidence for the early introduction of Semitic practices in amulets and defixiones or lead curse tab- lets into Greece via Sicily. A migration of ritual formulas of curse and blessing, atonement and thanks, across populations in close contact may have transpired through cohabitation, intermarriage, conversion, and other transcultural activities. This article argues for keeping the mixed nature of this encounter, including its Semitic features, visible in our understand- ing of cult at Selinus, rather than submerging or dividing it under ritual categories specific to Greek deities, Punic monuments, votive types, or religious rites.
