Abstract (sommario):
Beaches are an important recreational setting due to their provision of ideal open spaces for diverse water– and land–based recreation opportunities. Despite the importance of assessing the environmental justice of public beach access, few empirical studies have been conducted in community recreation. Using an environmental justice framework, this study examined whether inequities exist for certain racial/ethnic and socioeconomic groups with respect to the distribution of public beach access in the Detroit Metropolitan Area. Results indicated that inequitable public beach access is associated with population density, median housing value, elderly population, and nonvehicle ownership. Such findings can help public leisure agencies to assess environmental justice, a first step in developing more effective community recreation planning and management policies. Study implications, limitations, and recommendations for further research are also discussed.

Abstract (sommario):
Coastlines, like riverbanks, are dynamic. They continually move, usually imperceptibly, but in storm events they can move a great distance. This movement affects both private and public property rights. The State owns "submerged lands," wherever they happen to be at the time.' In legal documents in Texas, terms such as "along the river" and "with the meanders of the river" describe property boundaries. The difference between Gulf of Mexico and riverfront property is gulf beaches are open to the public, whereas the sand along rivers is private property. There is no Open Beaches Act for rivers. Owners of beachfront property acknowledge the fact that the shore moves at the whim of nature. It has long been established that the coastline is dynamic; therefore, only an easement that moves with the shore is workable.

Abstract (sommario):
Waterfronts represent some of Southern California’s most valuable real estate and most sought-after recreation destinations. Despite Los Angeles County’s reputation for large public beaches, privatization and the discouragement of public use came to characterize Malibu’s Broad Beach by the end of the twentieth century. In the same era, erosion reshaped the boundary between public and private property on the beach. Residents called for permanent structures to stabilize the coast. Public beach activists rejected homeowners’ claims that beach armoring was in the public’s interest. Activists demanded state authorities expand access opportunities and protect public recreation instead of protecting beachfront mansions. As coastal erosion altered the parameters of public access, environmental change raised the stakes regarding state and federal authorities’ responsibilities to maintain beaches. At the turn of the twenty-first century, the longstanding challenge to public access in this exclusive Malibu enclave collided with the unfolding climate crisis, highlighting the entwined nature of environmental risk and real estate development on the beach.

Abstract (sommario):
Public Health Units (PHUs) in Ontario regularly monitor public beaches for E. coli levels as an indicator of the risk of recreational water-induced illness. Provincial guidance for beach water monitoring allows local flexibility in the beach monitoring process. We conducted a survey of public health professionals responsible for beach water management in Ontario PHUs to determine how monitoring practices differ across jurisdictions. We obtained data from 22 of the 29 PHUs that conduct beach water monitoring. Six health units reported meeting guidelines (27%) and four reported meeting historical water quality (18%) were important factors in deciding sampling frequency. Major challenges and limitations in monitoring that arose from the lag time between sampling and obtaining results were reported by 12 (55%). Predictive modelling has been trialled eight times across the province with varied results. This study provides an overview on the current state and future avenues for beach water monitoring in Ontario.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT Northern Sanur Beach (Sanur Kaja Beach) consisting of Matahari Terbit Beach and the main Sanur Beach is a polular tourist destination on the island of Bali. Its strategic location, famous history, public and additional facilities, makes Sanur a demanding location for tourists. But one important role for such tourist destination is the cleanliness of the beach itself, providing comfort to travellers. A direct observational study and a descriptive cross-sectional study with randomized survey of 100 travellers (50 domestic and 50 international) regarding the cleanliness of Northern Sanur beach. Through the survey we gathered traveller’s evaluation on current sanitation of public facility (toilet, parking, and resting), additional facilities (restaurant, gift shop, and street vendors), and sanitary facility (rubbish bins) condition in Northern Sanur beach giving a score of very clean, moderate, or poor. Through direct observational we looked at physical objects around the environement such as its geography and facilities available in Northern Sanur beach collected through interviews from local informans. Respondents showed an overall positive response of “moderate” 25 of respondents or (50%) of domestics, and 32 respondents or (64% ) foreigners regarding sanitation quality of Northern Sanur beach. Public facilities as well as additional facilities are generally considered to be moderately clean by the total respondents. But traveller’s opinion suggested the “poor” availability of rubbish bins 25 of respondent or (50%) domestics and 23of respondents or (46%) foreigners. Public facilities of four public toilets, two parking area, rubbish bins, are available for travellers and taken care by local employees assigned by the head of village. As travellers states Northern Sanur to be moderately clean, other results that are considered poor or below expectation regarding specific public facilities should be taken care of to provide a better tourist attraction. Cleanliness is a tourist attraction itself, therefore keeping clean it is important for the sustainability of tourism.

Abstract (sommario):
Urban renewal was not just a city phenomenon: it also unfolded on the beaches of coastal metropolises, most spectacularly in Los Angeles where a “beach lobby” made up of public officials, businessmen, and engineers coalesced in the 1930s. In the postwar, they implemented their vision by buying beaches for the public and turning the polluted and eroded strands of the early-twentieth century into modern playgrounds. While they effectively prevented a “white flight” from the beach and successfully reshaped the coastal environment, their efforts also resulted in the erasure of alternative beach communities. By the 1960s, the lobby could rejoice in the enduring popularity of the city’s beaches. Yet new beach advocates used the California public beach tradition as a rallying cry to stop further development. “Beach renewal” in Los Angeles thus challenges both narratives of postwar urban decline and the binary opposition between 1930s conservationists and 1960s environmental activists.

Abstract (sommario):
New approaches should be considered as the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) moves rapidly to develop new beach monitoring guidelines by the end of 2012, as these guidelines serve as the basis by which states and territories with coasts along the oceans and Great Lakes can then develop and implement monitoring programs for recreational waters. We describe and illustrate one possible approach to beach regulation termed as the “Comprehensive Toolbox within an Approval Process (CTBAP).” The CTBAP consists of three components. The first is a “toolbox” consisting of an inventory of guidelines on monitoring targets, a series of measurement techniques, and guidance to improve water quality through source identification and prevention methods. The second two components are principles of implementation. These include first, “flexibility” to encourage and develop an individualized beach management plan tailored to local conditions and second, “consistency” of this management plan to ensure a consistent national level of public health protection. The results of this approach are illustrated through a case study at a well-studied South Florida recreational marine beach. This case study explores different monitoring targets based on two different health endpoints (skin versus gastrointestinal illness) and recommends a beach regulation program for the study beach that focuses predominately on source prevention.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Human activities and poor awareness are believed to be responsible for marine litter pollution. In the scope of the European Union, Cross Border Cooperation, and Black Sea Basin (EU, CBC, BSB - 785) LitOUTer Project, “Raising Public Awareness and Reducing Marine Litter for the Protection of the Black Sea Ecosystem”, beach clean-up activities have been conducted. A beach clean-up activity was conducted at the Kıyıcık Beach, Trabzon, Turkiye involved by Stakeholders, NGOs, middle to high school, university students, teachers, and lecturers. This study aims to reveal the amount of marine litter at Kıyıcık Beach through public participation in beach clean-up activities. A total of 4488 solid wastes (∼100 kg) were collected and removed from the beach. The waste composition consisted of 50% plastic, 22% metal, 10% glass, 8% paper, 4% cloth, 1% metal, and 4% Covid-19-related waste. Plastic pieces, plastic bottles, and caps dominated the plastic litter on the beach. Moreover, 119 single-use face masks (Covid-19-related waste) were collected. Single-use plastic waste in the environment implies the impact of human activities and a lack of awareness regarding marine litter. Public participation in beach clean-up activities is expected to raise individual awareness and reduce marine litter to protect the Black Sea Ecosystem.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. Rip currents pose a major global beach hazard; estimates of annual rip-current-related deaths in the United States alone range from 35 to 100 per year. Despite increased social research into beach-goer experience, little is known about levels of rip current knowledge within the general population. This study describes the results of an online survey to determine the extent of rip current knowledge across the United States, with the aim of improving and enhancing existing beach safety education material. Results suggest that the US-based Break the Grip of the Rip!® campaign has been successful in educating the public about rip current safety directly or indirectly, with the majority of respondents able to provide an accurate description of how to escape a rip current. However, the success of the campaign is limited by discrepancies between personal observations at the beach and rip forecasts that are broadcasted for a large area and time. It was the infrequent beach user that identified the largest discrepancies between the forecast and their observations. Since infrequent beach users also do not seek out lifeguards or take the same precautions as frequent beach users, it is argued that they are also at greatest risk of being caught in a dangerous situation. Results of this study suggest a need for the national campaign to provide greater focus on locally specific and verified rip forecasts and signage in coordination with lifeguards, but not at the expense of the successful national awareness program.

Abstract (sommario):
INTRODUCTION: Human exposure to antimicrobial-resistant bacteria may result in the transfer of resistance to commensal or pathogenic microbes present in the gastrointestinal tract, which may lead to severe health consequences and difficulties in treatment of future bacterial infections. It was hypothesized that the recreational waters from beaches represent a source of antimicrobial-resistantEscherichia colifor people engaging in water activities.OBJECTIVE: To describe the occurrence of antimicrobial-resistantE coliin the recreational waters of beaches in southern Quebec.METHODS: Sampling occurred over two summers; in 2004, 674 water samples were taken from 201 beaches, and in 2005, 628 water samples were taken from 177 beaches. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of the antimicrobial-resistantE coliisolates against a panel of 16 antimicrobials were determined using microbroth dilution.RESULTS: For 2004 and 2005, respectively, 28% and 38% of beaches sampled had at least one water sample contaminated byE coliresistant to one or more antimicrobials, and more than 10% of the resistant isolates were resistant to at least one antimicrobial of clinical importance for human medicine. The three antimicrobials with the highest frequency of resistance were tetracycline, ampicillin and sulfamethoxazole.DISCUSSION: The recreational waters of these beaches represent a potential source of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria for people engaging in water activities. Investigations relating the significance of these findings to public health should be pursued.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT Contamination of beach sand from two large releases of no. 2 fuel oil was found to persist for years in intertidal sand and for months in sand at the storm high tide line. This information on the unexpected persistence of this light, volatile fuel oil in the beach environment is invaluable in determining whether active remediation or natural attenuation is appropriate for the restoration of a contaminated beach. The major receptors of the impact of this contamination are a driving force in deciding what remedial approach should be taken. The two releases reported had different receptors. The major impact from the World Prodigy spill was to a public bathing beach. The oil contamination was of primary importance to residents of the town of Jamestown. Active remediation was conducted to restore an important socioeconomic resource. The major impact from the North Cape spill was to a beach in a wildlife refuge that is a protected nesting area for the threatened bird species, the piping plover. Active remediation was not conducted because of concern over disturbing the plover habitat, but would have been conducted had this been a public bathing beach.

Abstract (sommario):
Hoi An is a famous tourist city in Central Vietnam with Cua Dai beach which is a long beautiful swimming beach. In recent years, tourism of the city is developing very fast. The southern part of Cua Dai beach was covered by many resorts which were located close to the beach and protected by hard structures such as seawall, revetment, groin,… At present, all properties closed to the beach and hard protection structures of resort system were destroyed by wave action. And the northern part of Cua Dai beach (public beach) was seriously eroded and has been protected by “Soft structure”. Cua Dai coast erosion problem becomes the hot topic in communication system from central to local governments and it becomes the big concern of Vietnamese and international scientists. This paper presents the initial study results of Cua Dai beach erosion features. Study results show that Cua Dai beach erosion/deposition phenomenon occurred for a long time but the rate of accretion was larger than that of erosion. From the year of 2000 to present the rate of erosion was larger than that of accretion. The main causes of Cua Dai beach erosion are the interaction between hard protection structures and wave action, dredging operation in Thu Bon river mouth... which reduced the longshore sediment transport rate from Thu Bon river mouth to eroded beach.

Abstract (sommario):
The beach is Australia’s most popular recreational destination with participation in beach-based activities associated with a wide range of health and wellbeing benefits. Unfortunately, access to beach environments is not possible for many older people and people with a disability. The purpose of this study was to investigate the barriers and facilitators of beach accessibility using a framework that recognises the complex interconnections between blue space, accessibility, physical activity, and health and wellbeing. A 39-item anonymous online cross-sectional survey was developed and administered to explore the perspectives of older people and people with a disability regarding beach accessibility. In total, 350 people completed the survey (69% female, age range 2–90 years (mean = 52)). Disability was reported by 88% of respondents, with 77% requiring a community mobility aid. Two-thirds (68%) of respondents were unable to visit the beach as often as they wanted, with 45% unable to visit at all. The most frequently reported barriers to beach access included difficulty moving on soft sand (87%), no specialised mobility equipment (75%), and inaccessible lead-up pathways (81%). If beach access was improved, respondents reported they would visit the beach more often (85%), for longer (83%), and have an improved experience (91%). The most frequently reported facilitators to beach access were the presence of accessible lead-up pathways (90%), sand walkways (89%), and parking (87%). Older people and people with disability have limited beach access, primarily due to a lack of accessible equipment, excluding them from the wide range of health benefits associated with visiting the beach.

Abstract (sommario):
The beach morning glory is utilized as traditional medicine by the public but studies about this plant are still lacking. This study aims to identify the effect of soil organic matter (SOM) and heavy metal concentration on the distribution and abundance of the beach morning glory between Lok Kawi Beach and Teluk Likas Beach in Sabah. Sampling was conducted in August 2020, prior to the implementation of Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO). The field work experimental design for the sampling was based on line transect and quadrat sampling method. The plant abundance was determined by using the quadrat (point-intercept method). The soil organic matter was analysed by using the Loss on Ignition (LOI) method and the heavy metals concentration was analysed by using the Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). The results showed that the mean abundance of beach morning glory was higher in Teluk Likas Beach than in Lok Kawi Beach (p = 0.001). For the mean Lead (Pb) concentration, it was higher in Lok Kawi Beach than in Teluk Likas Beach (p = 0.01). The mean of soil organic matter (p = 0.88), zinc (Zn) (p = 0.12) and copper (Cu) (p = 0.54) did not differ much between both locations. For the correlation, the abundance of beach morning glory was not affected by the heavy metals’ concentration (Pb, Zn and Cu). The relative abundance of beach morning glory was not affected by the SOM and heavy metals concentration. Further research is needed to determine its bioactive compounds and efficacy.

Abstract (sommario):
Tourism is one of the sectors affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Papuma Beach is a tourist attraction in Jember which experienced a decrease in the number of tourists visits during 2020-2021 due to the government's policy to close all tourist destinations temporarily to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 virus. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of the promotional mix on the tourists visiting decision to Papuma Beach Jember. This research is a quantitative research using a causal associative approach. The population is all tourists who visit Papuma Beach Jember with a total sample of 100 respondents. This study uses a non-probability sampling technique, namely accidental sampling. The data was collected using a questionnaire and was analyzed by multiple linear regression analysis, F test, and t test. The results showed that advertising, sales promotion, personal selling, public relations, and direct and digital marketing had a significant effect on the tourists visiting decision simultaneously. While partially, only sales promotion and public relations are able to give a significant effect on the tourists visiting decision. These results provide a practical contribution for the manager of the Papuma Beach Jember to increase sales promotion through the provision of discounts and promos, as well as improve public relations.

Abstract (sommario):
Joko Mursodo Beach, as a tourist destination in Lamongan Regency, has great potential but is constrained by weaknesses in visual identity that are not yet strong and consistent. The lack of coordinated branding planning as well as the lack of implementation of a clear visual identity in various media are major obstacles. The lack of information conveyed to tourists through social media is also a problem, resulting in low public and tourist awareness of the potential of the beach. In this design, qualitative methods are implemented by conducting interviews, observations, and distributing questionnaires to the community. The data was then analyzed using a descriptive approach as well as the TOWS model. Therefore, the rebranding of Joko Mursodo Beach is needed to create a strong and attractive image. This will be achieved through the development of structured designs, improvement of promotional media, and delivery of more complete and interesting information. These steps aim to increase public awareness and the attractiveness of Joko Mursodo Beach as an attractive tourist destination.
