Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this article is to encourage teachers of psychology to make greater explicit use of evolutionary theory in their courses. Examples and arguments are presented to show that evolutionary theory can help students (a) think critically about classic psychological theories; (b) understand psychology's recent shift away from general theories toward narrower, domain-specific theories; (c) think about the possible adaptive functions of psychological phenomena that are often considered only as pathologies; and (d) understand the rationales behind cross-species comparisons in psychology. The article also exposes three mis-beliefs that seem to have helped dissuade many psychologists from taking advantage of evolutionary theory in their thinking and teaching.

Abstract (sommario):
Recent scholarly attention to the affinity of neuroscience and Pierre Janet’s psychology has led to his reassessment as a precursor of neuroscientific trauma studies. This essay examines Janet’s trauma theory in the context of this reappraisal of his psychology in the age of neuroscience. Janet’s resurgence is primarily due to the fact that he constructed his psychological system on his keen observations of the inseparable connection and dynamic interaction between the mind and the body. Janet’s observation of hysterical patients’ unconscious automatic activities enables an understanding of human activity as a psychological phenomenon, leading him to the discovery of the subconscious which is dissociated from the normal consciousness and holds fixed ideas that cause symptoms of involuntary movement and paralysis. Dissociation results from the narrowing of consciousness and its failure to integrate perceptions. Traumatic events, together with heredity factors, induce the retraction of consciousness, precipitating the mind’s lower function such as psychological automatism, and impairing its higher function of integration. Janet’s theory of psychological healing aims to reintegrate dissociated consciousness by finding and liquidating fixed ideas through suggestion, but it also substitutes those ideas for positive re-conceptualization of traumatic events and even dismantling and excising traumatic memories. Unable to assimilate traumatic events into the narrative of his life history, the patient repeatedly and unwittingly re-enacts them. Accordingly, healing involves “presentification” which empowers the patient to narrate traumatic events as past accidents from the vantage point of the present. Adaptation is accomplished by economically assessing the level of patient’s mental energy, which has been depleted by trauma, and promoting diverse methods to prevent further exhaustion and reinvest psychological “force” into higher “tendencies” of the mind. Janet also proposes the therapist’s “moral guidance” that balances the therapist’s active intervention and his support of the patient’s psychological independence, which reminds neuroscientific traumatologists of the importance of the subject’s agency and human interaction in the healing process.

Tovey, Heather. "Exploring intuition in clinical psychology : a grounded theory". Thesis, University of East London, 2008. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.532866.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Intuition is a concept that can provoke different reactions. It has been well researched in the field of cognitive psychology, but has been viewed with apprehension by clinical psychology. Research in the field of nursing has established a role for intuition in important aspects of clinical practice such as decision making, assessment, planning and implementing interventions. However no such investigation of intuition in clinical psychology has been made. The aims of this study were to explore how clinical psychologists construct intuition in their talk, specifically relating to clinical practice. Individual interviews were conducted with eight clinical psychologists. A grounded theory approach was used to develop three main categories from the interview data. The first category described how this group of clinical psychologists talked about 'doing' intuition. The second described participants' attempts to define intuition in context and the third category described how their views and use of intuition related to their 'being' a clinical psychologist. The findings of this study illustrate that participants constructed intuition as a valid concept with a significant role in clinical psychology practice. It was most readily discussed as a process, and participants found a notable difficulty in providing a concrete definition of intuition. Core elements of intuition and its use were located within a variety of contexts of the individual and system, the relationships to which were complex and diverse. The implications and limitations of this study are discussed along with suggestions for further research.

Bettonville, Brian Peter. "THE PSYCHOLOGY OF WORKING THEORY: PREDICTING DECENT WORK EXPERIENCES". OpenSIUC, 2018. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/dissertations/1638.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The Psychology of Working Theory (PWT; Duffy, Blustein, Diemer, & Autin, 2016) was recently proposed as an empirically testable approach to understanding the work processes of those for whom work decisions are influenced by contextual factors and who engage in work for reasons other than satisfaction. In the present study of 285 adults, I investigated the relationships between marginalization, economic resources, work volition, career adaptability, and decent work. I found that work volition, career adaptability, and economic resources all uniquely predicted decent work. I also found that greater economic resources and lower marginalization predicted greater work volition. Economic resources and marginalization have a significant negative correlation, and work volition significantly predicted career adaptability. I failed to support the hypotheses that greater marginalization would predict lower decent work experiences when accounting for other variables and that greater economic resources and lower marginalization would predict greater career adaptability. I identified two alternative models for the data. A model with only work volition and career adaptability predicting decent work provided an adequate fit. A model with only work volition predicting career adaptability provided mixed results. This study provides empirical support for the initial propositions of the PWT, provides further evidence for the importance of contextual variables in work experiences, and identifies several key factors that lead individuals to attain a decent work experience.

Abstract (sommario):
In this chapter we shall examine the theoretical assumptions that drive developmental psychology research and literature in South Africa. The basic underlying models utilised in developmental research may be described as (a) mechanistic; (b) organismic; (c) contextual and (d) social constructionist. A description of the fundamental premises of each of these will be followed by examples of research that utilise the particular approach. In the discussion, some of the controversies that plague developmental psychology research will be highlighted.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Positive psychology has become a vibrant, well-regarded field of study, and a powerful tool for clinicians. But, for many years, the research in areas relevant to positive psychology, such as happiness, subjective well-being, and emotional intelligence, has been based on findings from largely White samples and has rarely taken the concerns of the ethnic community into consideration. Now, for the first time, leaders in the field have come together to provide a comprehensive reference that focuses specifically on how a culturally-informed approach to positive psychology can help capitalize on the strengths of racial minority groups and have a greater potential to positively impact their psychological well-being. Acting as a bridge between positive psychology theory and research—largely based on an essentialist view of human behavior—and the realities of practice and assessment in diverse groups, Positive Psychology in Racial and Ethnic Groups focuses on four main ethnic groups: Asian Americans, Latin Americans, African Americans, and American Indians.

Pritchard, Sue, e Emily Miles. Where are the women in major projects leadership? Association for Project Management, settembre 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.61175/wkff6356.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This report asks where the women are in major project leadership and examines the success of gender balance initiatives that are being adopted across the sector. The aim for this research was to bring together different schools of thought on the topic of gender and leadership, applying it to the context of project management and megaproject leadership in the UK. The report reviews the status gender balance in UK megaprojects and brings in ideas from sociology, psychology, gender theory and leadership models. In doing so, the authors present the argument for adopting a different approach to gender balance that goes beyond fixing the numbers. They argue that gender balance should be part of the organisation’s corporate social responsibility, as UK major projects have a remit to improve societal transformation. Gender balance initiatives should do more than ‘fix women’ for leadership roles, but also work to assess and revise workplace culture.

Kost’, Stepan. THE CONCEPT OF CREATIVITY IN JOURNALISM. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, marzo 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2021.50.11092.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The article analyzes some theoretical and practical aspects of creativity. The author shares his opinion that the concept of creativity belongs to the fundamental concepts of philosophy, psychology, literature, art, pedagogy. Creativity is one of the important concepts of the theory of journalism. The author does not agree with the extended definition of creativity. He believes that journalistic activity becomes creativity when it is free and associated with the creation and establishment of new national and universal values, with the highest intensity of intellectual and moral strength of the journalist, when journalism is a manifestation of civic position, when this activity combines professional skills and perfect literary form. The author also believes that literary skill and the skill of a journalist are not identical concepts, because literary skill is a component of journalistic skill.

Rheinberger, Christoph, e Nicolas Treich. Catastrophe aversion: social attitudes towards common fates. Fondation pour une culture de sécurité industrielle, giugno 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.57071/882rpq.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
In light of climate change and other existential threats, policy commentators sometimes suggest that society should be more concerned about catastrophes. This document reflects on what is, or should be, society’s attitude toward such low-probability, high-impact events. The question underlying this analysis is how society considers (1) a major accident that leads to a large number of deaths; (2) a large number of small accidents that each kill one person, where the two situations lead to the same total number of deaths. We first explain how catastrophic risk can be conceived of as a spread in the distribution of losses, or a “more risky” distribution of risks. We then review studies from decision sciences, psychology, and behavioral economics that elicit people’s attitudes toward various social risks. This literature review finds more evidence against than in favor of catastrophe aversion. We address a number of possible behavioral explanations for these observations, then turn to social choice theory to examine how various social welfare functions handle catastrophic risk. We explain why catastrophe aversion may be in conflict with equity concerns and other-regarding preferences. Finally, we discuss current approaches to evaluate and regulate catastrophic risk, with a discussion of how it could be integrated into a benefit-cost analysis framework.

Burnett, Cathy. Scoping the field of literacy research: how might a range of research be valuable to primary teachers? Sheffield Hallam University, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.7190/shu-working-papers/2201.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Literacy research has an important role to play in helping to shape educational policy and practice. The field of literacy research however is difficult to navigate as literacy has been understood and researched in many different ways. It encompasses work from psychology, sociology, philosophy and neuroscience, literary theory, media and literacy studies, and methodologies include a range of qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods approaches. In mapping this complex field, I draw on a systematic ‘scoping survey’ of a sample of peerreviewed articles featuring literacy research relevant to literacy education for children aged 5-11. Studies were deemed relevant if they: addressed literacy pedagogies and interventions; and/or provided pertinent insights (e.g. into children’s experiences of literacy); and/or offered implications for the range and scope of literacy education. The results of this survey are important in two ways. Firstly they help to articulate the range of literacy research and the varied ways that such research might speak to literacy education. Secondly they challenge easy distinctions between paradigms in literacy research. Recognising this complexity and heterogeneity matters given the history of relationships between literacy policy and practice in countries such as England, where polarised debate has often erased the subtle differences of perspective and confluence of interest that this survey illuminates. Based on the results of this survey I argue that an inclusive approach to literacy research is needed in educational contexts. Otherwise alternative and/or complementary ways of supporting children’s literacy learning may be missed, as will important possibilities for literacy education and children’s current and future lives.

Abstract (sommario):
Understanding the complexities of human psychology and addressing mental health challenges require a multidimensional approach that transcends conventional boundaries. This manuscript explores the intersection between quantum mechanics and human science, proposing novel insights into the dynamics of human traits and behaviour. By examining the principles of quantum mechanics, particularly superposition, we hypothesize that human traits may exist in a state of potentiality, coexisting with their respective values. This perspective suggests that individuals possess a spectrum of traits, and deliberate effort plays a crucial role in determining their manifestation. Drawing inspiration from quantum mechanics, we advocate for a proactive approach to nurturing positive traits and addressing destructive tendencies. This involves recognizing the power of choice, fostering self-awareness, and actively engaging in personal growth initiatives. We discuss the implications of trait activation and highlight the importance of voluntary effort in shaping behaviour and character. Additionally, we explore practical strategies for navigating psychological challenges. This manuscript underscores the potential of interdisciplinary inquiry to inform innovative approaches to psychological intervention and therapy. Through further empirical research and theoretical exploration, we can unlock new perspectives and strategies for enhancing human flourishing and addressing the complexities of the human psyche.

McGinn, Noel. Why We Should End Reforms in Education. Inter-American Development Bank, aprile 2002. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0011021.

Abstract (sommario):
Education reforms are a constant social and political activity. Teachers have received more training, classes are smaller, more students have textbooks and they are of better quality. Curricula have been revised in accord with developments in cognitive psychology and advances in science. Literacy rates have risen notably and the average level of education in the population has grown steadily. Despite the many reforms carried out, and despite objective evidence of improved access and inputs, criticisms of public education have grown more intense and extensive. Why have reforms become more common even as they are unsatisfying?

Corscadden, Louise, e Arpaporn Sutipatanasomboon. What Is Operant Behavior And How To Study It. Maze Engineers, dicembre 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.55157/me2022127.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Operant behavior describes a type of voluntary goal-directed actions in animals based on the repercussions of previous occurrences. It develops when animals learn to specifically respond to recurring situations based on the outcome of their past experience. American psychologist B.F. Skinner was the first to use operant to describe the behaviors he observed in his landmark experiments in laboratory animals. Operant behavior and conditioning refine the nuance between conscious and unconscious behavioral responses, which influence psychology, and applied behavior analysis, and improve our understanding of addiction, substance dependence, child development, and decision-making.
