Abstract (sommario):
The intention of this thesis is to examine representations of gender and gender roles in a variety of discursive situations, using the methodology of discourse analysis (a systematic method of investigating natural language data). Within this brief, the aims of the research are twofold. Firstly, I wish to provide a criti9ue, informed by discourse analysis, of several of the major approaches which have been used in the study of gender in the social sciences. To this end, the text contains critical reviews of the sex — stereotypes literature (as epitomised in the work of Sandra Bern), the study of female moral development (as envisaged by Carol Gilligan) and the psychoanalytic perspective (represented by Nancy Chodorow and Karen Homey). In addition to the above, I shall also look at some recent trends in gender research, considering developments deriving from psychoanalytic theory, deconstructionism, poststructuralism and social identity theory. The theoretical aspect of the thesis will be concluded with a section on issues of language, methodology and ideology. The second aim of the research is to conduct a study of the practical application of discourse analysis. A number of pilot interviews and the review essays delineated three areas as important: women's conceptions of social change; images of gender in everyday discourse; the female self — concept. Each of the three empirical chapters will consider one of these topics, comparing the expectations of existing social psychological work to the findings generated through the discourse analysis of the data. The conclusion of the thesis is that discourse analysis is a particularly useful methodology for considering data of the type presented in this project, as it circumvents many of the problems encountered by more traditional social psychological research methods.

Abstract (sommario):

Sub-Saharan Africa has the greatest proportion of people living with HIV. As of 2005, 28.5 million people in southern Africa were living with HIV and 57% of them are women (UNAIDS, 2005). As the pandemic progresses, scholarly work is produced surrounding HIV but this still remains within the confines of the hegemonic construct of HIV as a biomedical problem. The literature does not reflect the fact that HIV is a gendered experience nor does it reflect the discourses of HIV produced by the women who are living with the virus. This study focused on uncovering the discourses of women living with HIV by conducting 15 semi-structured qualitative interviews with women living in a suburb of Cape Town, South Africa. The research was conducted within a feminist framework and the interview questions focus on women's experiences of living with HIV. The interview transcripts were discursively analysed. The analysis focuses on the context in which the women were speaking as well as the language they employed. The discourses that emerged are: normalisation through men and work, the positive and negative effects of disclosure, taking care of men and children versus abuse, and bodily changes. The findings indicate that future research must take into consideration not only the dominant bio-medical discourses of HIV, but the discourses of the very women living with the virus. In addition, the discourses of women that emerge in this study indicate the need for the global restructuring of oppressive hegemonic systems that have exacerbated the HIV problem for women as well as men, if we are to see the end of HIV as a social problem.

Abstract (sommario):
Breast cancer patients consistently reported psychosocial adjustment difficulty in their sense of femininity after breast removal surgery. In view of this, the present study aimed to explore the effects of three femininity-related concepts on emotional reactions towards breast removal surgery – femininity schema, femininity loss appraisals, and femininity contingency of self-worth. 212 women without breast cancer history participated in this study. They completed a questionnaire which included a hypothetical scenario of breast removal. Results showed that women who considered the breast of a high relative importance in femininity schema, and depended their self-worth highly on sense of femininity, reported greater increase in negative emotions after hypothetical breast removal. This effect was mediated by femininity loss appraisals. Implications and future directions were discussed.

Berger, Anja.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The gender role self concept - developed throughout one’s socialisation - has strong relations to a number of affects, cognitions and behaviours. Instruments to asses that part of the self have yet only relied on mostly positive aspects of masculinity and femininity. However, the definition of the self concept is not limited to that kind of merely positive valence, and from health psychology as well as group research the relevance of negative traits for self description is known and proven. Hence, in a series of seven studies, new items were developed that reflect actual cultural descriptions of masculinity and femininity including both, traits of positive and negative valence. Following a critical reflection of the German BSRI, to once more identify its weaknesses of positive scales only, four new scales are introduced, based on evaluations of typicality and social desirability. In two studies those four scales were allocated to specific psychological constructs of emotions and behaviours. It was shown that each single scale has its own relevance regarding the gendered self in prediction of validation constructs: negative masculine traits e.g. had a stronger relationship to aggression and power compared to positive aspects of masculinity. The result of that development and validation process are four short, independent, and reliable scales, that reflect positive as well as negative aspects of masculinity and femininity. The introduction of an individual importance measure as part of the self description - comparable to the expectation-value-model in motivation and attitude research - could not add any predictive power in the validation process and therefore will not be included in the final instrument.

Steenkamp, Maria Magrieta. "The transition into womanhood : a feminist, social constructivist analysis". Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/20421.

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2005.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: To address the research question of how young women themselves experience the transition into womanhood, by looking at the articulated subjective experiences of young women involved in negotiating the process of 'becoming a woman'. The research question was approached from a post-modern feminist and social constructionist perspective, using qualitative methodology. In-depth interviews were conducted with two groups of young women - five white, middle class students who are involved in the Women's Mental Health Research Project (WMHRP) as interviewers, and five coloured, working-class young women who would be interviewees in the WMHRP. These two groups of participants were recruited from different social backgrounds in order to investigate contextual variations in their identity negotiation processes. Transcripts of the interviews were analyzed according to constructivist grounded theory protocol (Charmaz, 2003; Henwood & Pidgeon, 2003). Three main categories were constructed from the data, namely 1) the girl/woman dichotomy, 2) the "woman imperative", and 3) different processes experienced. In chapter one, an introduction is provided which discusses the importance of the research question to feminist and developmental psychologists, and highlights the paucity of research on the topic within these areas. Chapter two examines the empirical literature surrounding the research question, which highlights the marginalization of the transition into womanhood by psychological researchers. Anthropological studies of 'rites of passage' are also briefly discussed. In chapter three the theoretical framework that informed the present study is discussed, namely 1) social constructionism, with its focus on discourse and its rejection of essentialism, and 2) feminism, with its emphasis on gendered identity, difference and power. Concepts central to the present study, namely development, gender, and identity are also discussed in this chapter. Chapter four provides an explanation of the methodology and methods that were used in the present study, while chapter five presents the results and a discussion of the results. Finally, chapter six consists of a discussion of the conclusions that can be drawn from the findings, as well as their implications for research and practice.

Abstract (sommario):
Emerging research highlights the social penalties for men and women who commit cross-gendered behaviors. Here, I examine how and when two contextual mechanisms (competence and credentials) alter people's perceptions of cross-gendered behavior and render actors as less gender-atypical and more gender-typical. In Study 1, I tested the hypothesis that incompetence in cross-gendered behaviors would communicate same-gendered qualities by contrast. In Study 2, I tested the hypothesis that an actor who commits a cross-gendered behavior will receive less gender-inconsistent evaluations if they first demonstrate gender-typical traits. Moreover, Study 2 examines whether or not these credentialed actors change the perception of the behavior's alignment with conventional gender stereotypes. Results were largely mixed but generally failed to support hypotheses. The Discussion focuses on how future research can address these questions.

Abstract (sommario):
Mistrust in law enforcement is a current problem that America is facing. This study examined how officer gender and race influences perceptions of trust, “masculine” and “feminine” attributes, and level of guilt in a scenario depicting potential police brutality. A hundred American adult participants read one of four possible vignettes describing a shooting between a police officer and a n African American male victim. The conditions varied along the two key dimensions of police race and police gender. Thus the study consisted of a 2 (Police Race: Black or White) by 2 (Police Gender: Male or Female) between- participants factorial design. Participants were then asked to rate the degree of officer blame, officer “masculinity” and “femininity”, as well perceptions of trust in the officer. White, male officers are expected to be blamed significantly more than female and African American officers. Trust in female officers is also expected to be significantly higher than in male officers. Male officers are likely to be considered more “masculine” and less “feminine” than female officers.

Abstract (sommario):
Studies on prostitution have typically focused on the experiences, problems, and histories of prostitutes, rather than examining men who seek to purchase sex. Race has also been overlooked as a central factor in shaping the sex industry and the motivations of men who seek to purchase sex. This study utilizes online reviews of prostitutes to examine the way men who purchase sex discuss Asian prostitutes in comparison to White prostitutes. This paper traces the history of colonialism and ideas of the exotic Orient to modern stereotypes of Asian women. These stereotypes are then used to frame a quantitative and qualitative analysis of online reviews of prostitutes and compare the ways in which Asian prostitutes and white prostitutes are discussed. Further, the reviews are used to examine more broadly what services, traits, and behaviors are considered desirable by men who use prostitutes. The study finds that there are significant quantitative and qualitative differences in how men discuss Asian and White prostitutes within their reviews, and that these differences appear to be shaped by racially fetishizing stereotypes of Asian women. Prostitution also appears to reinforce male dominance and patriarchy in the form of masculine control and the feminine servicing of male sexual and emotional needs.

Ireson, Lucinda. "Cracked mirrors and petrifying vision : negotiating femininity as spectacle within the Victorian cultural sphere". Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2014. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/4796/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Taking as it basis the longstanding alignment of men with an active, eroticised gaze and women with visual spectacle within Western culture, this thesis demonstrates the prevalence of this model during the Victorian era, adopting an interdisciplinary approach so as to convey the varied means by which the gendering of vision was propagated and encouraged. Chapter One provides an overview of gender and visual politics in the Victorian age, subsequently analysing a selection of texts that highlight this gendered dichotomy of vision. Chapter Two focuses on the theoretical and developmental underpinnings of this dichotomy, drawing upon both Freudian and object relations theory. Chapters Three and Four centre on women’s poetic responses to this imbalance, beginning by discussing texts that convey awareness and discontent before moving on to examine more complex portrayals of psychological trauma. Chapter Five unites these interdisciplinary threads to explore women’s attempts to break away from their status as objects of vision, referring to poetic and artistic texts as well as women’s real life experiences. The thesis concludes that, though women were not wholly oppressed, they were subject to significant strictures; principally, the enduring, pervasive presence of an objectifying mode of vision aligned with the male.

Boothroyd, Lynda. "Father absence, attraction and development". Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/14199.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Since Draper & Harpending (1982) proposed that father absence would be associated with a shift in reproductive strategy, a body of literature has accumulated supporting their claims. This thesis explores further aspects of father absence theory, utilising computergraphic facial processing. It opens with an overview of both father absence theory (Chapter 1) and the Evolutionary Psychology of attraction (Chapter 2). Part 1 Part 1 explores the meaning of masculinity in partner choice scenarios. Male facial masculinity co-varied with facial age but not apparent facial health both in tenns of women's preferences (Study 1) and women's direct perceptions (Study 2). This suggested that masculinity in male faces is not a cue to immunocompetence health status as other authors have suggested, In Study 3, while masculine faces were perceived as more dominant than feminised faces, they were otherwise considered poorer quality partners. It was suggested that masculinity was attractive because of a 'sexy son' mechanism (dominance increasing offspring reproductive success), which was traded off against the anti-social traits associated with masculinity. Part 2 Studies 4, 5 and 6 found that father absence or poor relationships with the parents generally reduced masculinity preference and age preference (although in Study 5, this effect was moderated by relationship status). This contradicted predictions made from traditional father absence literature (that father absence should be associated with a short term strategy and therefore masculinity preference). Sociological explanations were discounted as family background did not relate to the traits women said they desired in a partner (Study 7). Altogether these results raised questions about the attractiveness and self-esteem of father absent females. Part 3 therefore investigated the physical development of these females. Part 3 Study 8 found that marital difficulties between parents were associated with an increase in perceived facial masculinity in both male and female offspring's faces, a decrease in facial attractiveness and increased weight and waist-hip ratio in women. Study 9 found that levels of progesterone were inversely related to quality of parental relationship. The overarching conclusions of the thesis were that there appears to be an effect' of physical masculinisation which is associated with father absence. This masculinisation may be the predicator for previously observed father absence effects, and the results in Part 2. As such, attachment based explanations of father absence effects (such as Belsky et al, 1991) may be redundant.

Chalk, Beryl. "Empowered narratives : drama praxis and the archetype as a means to authentic voice for women". Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 1997. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/897.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis contests the status of gender as a social construct by considering how women develop a personal ethnography when engaging in drama and expressive arts practices. There is no known research on drama praxis as a signifier to Australian women's identity, a major focus of this work will be, 'Who has the authority over women's expression and means of expression? Who has the authority to interpret the experience? Who has authority over other people's experience?' This thesis addresses the internalised- oppression which refers to the process by which women internalise the 'fictionalised' reality prescribed to them as women marked by the binary construct of gender duality, i.e., male/female, in which the male as the ascendant partner in the duality has the power to mark those on the descendant as 'other' to the norm. The limits of 'knowing' only through positivist science will be extended into multi modes of knowing and within the drama praxis the reflective processes enabled by personal engagement will be investigated within the personal, universal and analogous modes. This thesis, being written from a postructuralist perspective, is a means of giving the study group authentic voice. It proceeds from an explicit framework engaging archetype as a means to modify consciousness and is an invitation: a "call to action".

Abstract (sommario):
This study examined the relationship between masculine and feminine God images and psychological well-being. Based on the results of past research, it was hypothesized that people with more feminine images of God would have higher psychological well-being compared to those with more masculine images of God. Participants were 232 college students. A factor analysis indicated that God images did not fall into primarily masculine or feminine factors. Rather, three factors were found, which were labeled Loving Father, Controlling God, and Mother God. Although the God image factors were not found to be significant predictors of psychological well-being when intrinsic, extrinsic, and quest religiosity were controlled, the results suggested that the relationship between God images and psychological well-being may be mediated by intrinsic religiosity. It was concluded that development of more psychometrically sound measures of God images is needed to enhance future research on this topic.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
This study explores women’s experiences of sex with men. It is based on qualitative data collected from eighteen life history interviews. Such an approach provides means for examining women’s sexual experiences over time. The study finds that women give meaning to their sexual experiences through two main discursive representations: the passive, “proper” and sexually obliging girlfriend or wife, and the active and “sexually equal” woman. However, these representations do not capture the entirety of women’s sexual experiences. The life history analysis demonstrates that women are not simply inscribed by discourse. Rather, they are embodied beings actively engaged in pursuing sexual identities. Central to the process is a relationship between the practice of sex and self-reflexivity over time. Finally, the study demonstrates how the process of gaining sexual subjectivity is shaped by the material conditions of women’s lives. For instance, the praxeological circumstances of women’s class or race are powerful in recasting discourses of feminine sexuality, the meanings women ascribe to them, their access to broader sexual experiences, and the kinds of relationships they have with their male partners.

Abstract (sommario):
Women are subject to a number of societal recommendations about what it means to be an 'ideal' woman. These recommendations take the form of social scripts, constructing an idea of ideal femininity, which women must perform in order to be socially accepted and successful. 'Emphasized femininity', a white, Western, script of femininity is dominant and has been critiqued by feminists, social theorists, and individual women for the limits that it places on women's behaviour. As a result a number of alternative scripts of femininity have arisen. These scripts can provide alternatives to restrictive understandings of female sexuality and beauty - they can serve to challenge 'appropriate' feminine behaviour and hence allow women to live more freely. Raunch femininity is a contemporary alternative that uses sexually explicit public performance, and encourages specific body and dress norms, in an attempt to challenge the norms of emphasized femininity. This thesis looks at raunch femininity, specifically its norms of sexuality and beauty, in the hopes of understanding what the effects of such a script are on women's behaviour. Theoretical understandings and explanations of women's lives are often contradicted by reports that women provide of their lived experiences. For this reason, this thesis investigates the lived experiences of women who self-identify as subscribers to this script in order to assess to what extent superficial expressions of freedom have deeper effects on women's freedom. The tension between theory and empirical reports is evident. However, in many cases, the reports of research participants reveal that the script of raunch femininity, like other scripts of feminine behaviour, has its own limits that women must abide with in order to be accepted. This thesis argues that these limits outweigh the benefits of this script.

------ ABSTRACT ------ The main object of the study was to determine the personality structure of women who delivered prematurely. Based on an exploratory, observational and transversal research design, a sample of 301 premature mothers was obtained in 2 health institutions on the outskirts of Lisbon. The demographic, clinical and psychological data was collected through a research protocol based on the Revised NEO Personality Inventory (Five-Factor Model) and a Sample Questionnaire. The clinical and demographic variables portray the participant in the following manner: average 28,39 years when pre-term child was born; 67,12% were first time mothers; 79,07% were Caucasian; 86,05% were married; 89,03% lived with partner in family home; 64,12% planned, 95,68% desired and 95,59% monitored the pregnancy; 23,23% had previously given birth to another premature child; 77,74% worked during pregnancy; 66,77% of births were through cesarean section; neonates were born with mean gestational age 31,63 weeks and mean weight of 1647,90 grams. The psychological variables, when compared with normative values (Portuguese population) depict a personality profile high in Extroversion (E; p = 0,0001) and low in Neuroticism (N; p = 0,0001). The participants can be characterized as not being hostile (N2; p = 0,0001), vulnerable (N6; p = 0,02) depressed (N3; p = 0,0001) or self-conscious (N4; p = 0,02). Instead they are assertive (E3; p = 0,0001), active (E4; p = 0,0001) and have more positive emotions (E6 p = 0,0001). Although they do not appreciate aesthetics (02; p = 0,01) and actions (04; p = 0,02), they are prone to having more ideas (05; p = 0,0001) and values (06; p = 0,04). Altruistic (A3; p = 0,04), self-disciplined (C5; p = 0,002), less deliberate (C6; p = 0,03) they are not very committed to duty (C3; p = 0,0001). Being what the authors consider as very "feminine", their extroverted and active nature on both the personal and social level is analyzed in view of what is commonly expected of a mother-to-be in the process of "emotional gestation".

Abstract (sommario):
This article is about research on the meaning of Gender-Man, Masculinity, Woman, and Femininity- in an accidental sample of children, youngsters, adults, and elders from different low SES groups in Lima, Perú. Through content analysis of open interviews it is shown that, for these groups, sex and gender are not being differentiated. Results are interpreted in terms of the implications these conceptualizations of gender have for sexual and reproductive health program interventions, like in family planning, assertiveness training, sex education, women empowerment workshops, male masculinity workshops, and women' s assertiveness training and awareness raising programs, as well as interventions in domestic violence and prevention of sexual abuse. The need to trascend gender roles, which sustain gender relations of power and submission in peruvian society, is strongly stressed.

Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation identified and developed indicators of a new potential predictor of relationship satisfaction and intimate partner violence (IPV): discrepancies between the ideal and perceived gendered characteristics of romantic partners. Past research has overlooked the implicitly gendered nature of these "partner-ideals." Two pilot studies were conducted to develop measures of gendered partner-ideals and -perceptions based on existing measures of gender ideology. The main study examined survey data collected online from adults (n = 643) living in the U.S. who were in a heterosexual romantic relationship for at least six months. Three main hypotheses were tested regarding the associations among gender ideology, gendered partner-ideals, gendered partner-perceptions, gendered partner-ideal discrepancies, relationship satisfaction, and experiences with IPV. While confirmatory factor analyses supported the reliability of the new measures of masculine-ideals and -perceptions, results did not support the hypothesized factor structure of the feminine measures. Thus, only hypotheses utilizing women's data were tested. This measurement limitation resulted in an unanticipated focus on women's IPV perpetration for Hypothesis Two. However, these data are valuable in their uniqueness. Hypothesis One was supported: women's masculinity ideology positively correlated with the corresponding masculine-ideal for each subscale of the respective measures as well as for the aggregate measures. Tests of Hypothesis Two showed that women's masculine-ideal discrepancies predicted their emotional abuse perpetration, but not their physical assault or injury perpetration, mediated by relationship satisfaction. However, this effect was small. Hypothesis Three had mixed support. Women's aggregate masculine-partner perceptions were positively associated with their reports of emotional abuse victimization. Additionally, women's reports of most types of IPV victimization positively correlated with perceptions of their male partners' conformity to the specific norms of negativity toward sexual minorities and restrictive emotionality. Contributions of this dissertation and implications of the results are discussed. A major contribution is the creation of masculine-ideals and -perceptions measures that can be used in future research on relationships. Study results suggest that gendered partner-ideals and -perceptions, beyond gender-ideology, have relevance to the functioning of romantic relationships--including both relationship satisfaction and some kinds of IPV. Future research should continue to investigate the validity of the created measures and explore the possibility of using discrepancies between gendered partner-ideals and -perceptions to prevent and intervene in abusive romantic relationships.

This study intends to trace out the connections among femininity, maternity and identification through the forensic psychologist s task in family courts, in cases that involve child-custody disputes. This is a qualitative study, with a psychoanalytic basis. The dissertation was developed in a particular setting and is organized around two main focuses. In the first one, there is the institutional context. Here are presented which are the cases under evaluation by the Child and Youth Court and the Family Court, as well as the description of the task of the psychologist in those processes. Starting with the premise that Family Court cases concern parties who maintain emotional connections with each other, the study questions the forensic model. It affirms the possibility of an psycoanalytical listening that also contains the possibility of intervention (and consequently of psychoanalytical research) into the families that seek the courts to resolve intrapsychic or intersubjective conflicts. The second focus is directed to articulate femininity, maternity and identification from the exam of three cases. In these, the women are faced with the fact that provisory custody is given to the father, thus making them feel it like a narcissist loss and the alterity of the child is kept in secondary place. Without intending to generalize, inquiry is made into the narcissistic value of maternity and its relationship to femininity, discussing the question with a focus on identification of these women with their own mothers, outstanding an identification that operates in the mode of melancholic identification

Abstract (sommario):
This work analyzes, according to Freudian texts, the route to become a woman, its contributions and impasses today. Its in the encounter with the feminine, attempting to understand the meaning of fantasies and hysterical symptoms, that Freud found out the inconsciousness, the trauma, sex, that drove to childhood sexual experiences. Studying sexuality in perversion, we face childhood sexuality and its many-formed perverted nature. Sexuality leaves then, perversion field to come into impulse and desire field. In this context, Freud develops a theory of feminine sexuality referred to castration and phallic primacy, only way to the acquisition of a normal feminism. Reflecting and analyzing to become a woman according to Freud, sent it to the society of spectacle and narcissism worship. Woman, through this path, has conquered many spaces, creating new social links: has left private space, meant by marriage and motherhood, to be at the spectacle scenery. Viewing this scenery in the consumers universe society and its consequences in the feminine subjectivity, tending to analyze in details womans relation with her own body and sexuality, stressed by sexual excess and tied to an ideal body, source of sorrow and pain. At present-day, thats the image of woman-body-sex that comes up with masks and technological devices, searching the desired-perfect body, trying to deceive failure incompleteness, death. Its body-sex as object of desire and consumption, that sells anything and becomes others object of pleasure. It shows an open-wide sexuality, primitive, without limits. It changes from a hysterical to a body-sex woman, the one that plays the whore in the masculine fantasy, legitimated by the social, idealized and feminine model. Feminism meaning what the seduction and erotism game owns as the most sublime, mysterious and gorgeous-showed in a subtle erotic gesture, a neckline,a revelation has no value today. The woman shows, through her highly erotized body, the necessity of searching other knowledges, before new forms of erotization she faces

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
This paper examines the discourse of pain and pain relief in the advice texts given to future mothers through the public health clinics in Sweden. The aim of the study is to explore how the concepts of “natural” and “normal” shapes the prevailing methods and perspectives in the texts. I use critical discourse theory as it is articulated by Norman Fairclough by using the three dimensional model, combined with the theory about gender performativity. The discourse of “natural” birth constitutes a socio-cultural norm throughout a variation of cultures which shapes and regulates women’s decision making regarding options of pain relief and delivery methods when giving birth. The “natural” discourse has been (re)produced in the feminist critique of the medicalisation, and consequently the pathologisation, of pregnancy. Recent studies has shown that the “natural” discourse can be seen as a gender constituting process that can lead to reproducing traditional ideals about femininity and motherhood. By analysing how the public healthcare system articulate the norms regarding pregnancy and giving birth in regards to these two different discourses, and what the potential effects are of the discourse in question, it opens up to a discussion about the equality of health and gender.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):

Traditional femininity is a construct that impacts women throughout their development and manifests through inauthenticity in relationships, self-objectification and inauthentic sexuality. Traditional femininity has been associated with greater depression, body shame, dissociation, and negative sexual outcomes. Traits of traditionally defined femininity can impede women’s ability to assert their sexual wants and needs and can increase the likelihood of negative health outcomes and negative psychological consequences, all of which impact relationship satisfaction and sexual well-being. To date, the majority of research in this area has focused on adolescent and college aged women. The current study addressed the gap in existing research by focusing on women in their 30s (n=146) and women in their 60s ( n=81). The study assessed their level of traditional femininity ideology (TFI) and exploring whether their degree of TFI impacted their sexual well-being. The study took a quantitative approach and 230 participants were recruited through the internet to complete the studies survey. Results indicated that there was no significant difference between the two age cohorts on a measure of inauthenticity in relationships. Participants in their 30s were found to engage in greater self-objectification than the 60s cohort, and the study found that women in their 30s enjoyed sexualized attention to a greater degree than did the women in their 60s. Although the study had hypothesized that there would be a relationship between the participants’ level of TFI and their sexual well-being, no relationship was found. Implications for future research and application for clinical practice are discussed.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis investigates the social construction of sex/gender in 116 upper primary school students. Particular attention is paid to the Gender Myth - a belief that the manifestation of sex/gender is polarized, that the male half of such a dualism is superior to the female half, that such differentiated sex/gender is grounded in essential biological difference between males and females; and the way that it impacts on these school children, in reference to their internalization of discourses and practices associated with sport, work and domesticity, and sexuality.

Goh, Hong Eng. "A new structural summary of the MMPI-2 for evaluating personal injury claimants". University of Southern Queensland, Faculty of Sciences, 2006. http://eprints.usq.edu.au/archive/00001434/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) is a popular measure of psychosocial functioning and psychopathology in the assessment of individuals in a variety of settings. However, the method of construction employed with the MMPI more than 60 years ago with psychiatric patients challenges the applicability of the scales for determining the psychosocial functioning of individuals from different settings. The restandardisation conducted in 1987 made no effort to eradicate the item overlap that was a result of the criterion keying method with contrasted groups. Although restandardized and updated with more contemporary language and content, the original psychiatric constructs were retained in order to maintain continuity with its predecessor. The aims of this investigation were to develop a new structure for the MMPI-2 constructed at the item-level, empirically derived and which specifically represents the dimensions that are relevant and appropriate in evaluating the psychosocial functioning of personal injury claimants. This task included comparisons with a comparable scale-level analysis and developing optimal scoring strategies where items in components and facets are allocated weightings based upon their strength of association. Study 1 was conducted using a sample of 2989 personal injury claimants assessed in Australia and the United States of America. The final sample of 3230, included 241 normal individuals, was utilized to develop a scale-level structure from 79 standard MMPI-2 scales and subscales. A nine-component solution consisting of General Maladjustment /Emotional Distress, Asocial Beliefs, Social Vulnerability, Somatic Complaints, Psychological Disturbance, Impulsive Expression, Antisocial Practices, Stereotypic Fears and Family Difficulties was derived using principal component analysis. However, intercorrelation between components in the structure signaled the need to develop a structure that would eradicate problems that were perpetuated by item overlap. The second study was conducted with a set of best practice procedures with the same clinical sample of 2989 personal injury claimants as Study 1. Forty-one components were derived through principal component analysis. Through the application of a set of criteria, a 35-component solution was retained. The pattern coefficients from the allocation of items to components determined the weightings to be applied to each item. Further analysis of the 35 components derived a substructure of 37 facets. The 35 components included only 442 of the 567 items, with the reliability coefficients of the first 25 components that ranged between .5 and .97, and the remaining 10 components that ranged from .29 to .49. The latter unreliable components were not included in the final Structural Summary, leaving 25 components (400 items) and their 33 facets for interpretation. Hence, in demonstrating the utility of the newly-derived structure, only 25 components and their 33 facets were interpreted. The 25 components were grouped conceptually into six domains. In the emotional domain were Psychological Distress (PsyDist), Anger, Fears, Psychotic Symptoms (PsyS), Paranoia (Par), Irritability (Irrit), Elation (Elat), Fear of the Dark (FD), and Financial Worry (FinWo). Somatic Complaints (SomC), Sexual Concerns (SexCon), and Gastrointestinal Problems (GasP) made up the measures in the physiological domain. In the behavioural domain were Cognitive Difficulties (CogDiff), Stimulus-Seeking (StimuS), Discipline (Dis), and Delinquency (Del) whilst the interpersonal domain was formed by Social Withdrawal (SoW), Negative Interpersonal Attitude (NIA), Timidity (Tim), Lie, Dissatisfaction with Self (DWS) and Family Relationship Difficulties (FReD). Alcoholism (Alco) was the only measure in the substance abuse domain, and the gender domain was comprised of Masculinity (Mas) and Femininity (Fem). The third study established preliminary normative means and standard deviations using a small opportunistic Australian university student sample (N = 219). No substantial gender differences were found but gender norms were maintained to facilitate comparisons with the traditional MMPI-2 approach. Comparisons of frequency of 'true' item response between the Australian university student sample and the U.S. restandardisation sample found relatively little differences and permitted evaluation of between sample differences on components and facets. The utility of the structure was demonstrated with the illustration of two clinical case examples, and a comparison was made with the standard MMPI-2 scales and subscales. The Structural Summary for the MMPI-2 demonstrated discriminative measures of psychosocial functioning that were a result of no item overlap, and the ability to attend to the different levels of intensity of self-report items because of differential weightings.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is based on thinking around the unprecedented action of the Maid of Orléans which created the Joan of Arc matrix. In order to understand this intriguing and singular specificity, we hypothesise that the major changes operated in and by the anomaly of the Maid of Orléans can be explained by the adolescent process, the work of a creating adolescent. She is emblematic of the adolescent who finds themselves developing outside of the social framework of adolescence. The language of her transgressive verbal and behavioural actions, which can be viewed as phallic-narcissistic, express a masculine femininity in which a combination of identifications and ideals passed on by the parent figures are coalesced and reworked. In a pubescent context, we hypothesis that the voices heard by Joan of Arc are not a sign of psychosis but a sort of double of herself, a transitional intermediary, opening up the development of a relationship with herself and with others; a form of support which authorises and stimulates the creation of a self that is both original and disturbing in medieval times. In the XIXth century, Republicans and Nationalists, building a new France, on new foundations, established an ideological position through national storytelling which used Joan of Arc's heroic function to further patriotic idealism. A prototype of the patriotic hero, she was to be used as a support and vector of heroic identification and shared ideals. The identification-identity-ideal nexus is deployed in both the individual and the collective: it helps to understand the identity issues, to respond to the individual's need for identity and the desire to repair the trauma and damage inflicted

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis seeks to study the relationship between fathers and daughters in a postmodern patriarchal society. Choosing the Syrian society as its main case study, the paper aims to crystallize a better understanding of how such relationships are established as well as exploring their characteristics, consequences, and effects on adolescence in general, and on teenagers in particular. It also focuses on the transformation effects from the current world, depending on subjective construction, expressions of suffering inherent to human conditions in the new symbolic order that imposes liberalism on interpersonal relations, galloping globalized economy ; and the technologization of exchange among the speaking-beings/parlêtres (Lesourd, 2007a, p. 11-12).The aforementioned factors this paper analyzes encourage further investigation into the influence of modernity on father-daughter bonds. Such investigation is particularly important in light of the remarkable and increasing number of suicide attempts among young girls and women in the Arab region, likely in response to difficulties they face. These suicide attempts, we argue, are a result of fathers’ absence, and the authority which could be abusively opposed to parents as per Serge LESOURD, holding them responsible for violence by their children. Lesourd argues that “fathers did not quit, on the contrary, the reference system which had given them weight, has been modified in the occident” (Lesourd, 2003, p.36). We believe that the case in the Arab world is similar to the one described by Lesourd. The paper is divided into two parts : the first contains theoretical reflections while the second contains clinical examples about the construction of Syrian female teenagers’ sexual identity. This clinical projective study was carried out as part of CoPsyEnfant research, conducted by l’URP/SCLS in Strasbourg
