Zaciewski, Janelle. "Consultation Trends in School Psychology Literature". TopSCHOLAR®, 2003. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/575.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Consultation is a prominent indirect service delivery method in school psychology today. Several publications endorsed by the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) have traditionally suggested the mental health, organizational, and behavioral models of consultation as the three prominent consultation models in the field of school psychology. However, no supporting data are cited and it is unclear if these three models are still prominent in school psychology today. The present research examined the consultation literature over the last 22 years in two prominent school psychology journals, Journal of School Psychology and School Psychology Quarterly (originally called Professional School Psychology). This research involved the analysis of 145 consultation articles from the school psychology literature. The data was analyzed to obtain information regarding the frequency of consultation articles published, any trend that emerged from this data, the most frequent types of consultation mentioned, the type of research conducted, and topics addressed in the articles. Analysis of consultation trends over time indicated a decrease in the frequency of consultation articles published over time in both journals. The terms utilized to address consultation models are greatly varied, demonstrated by the 107 different types of consultation referenced in the consultation articles. Clearly, behavioral consultation is the most frequently researched and referenced consultation model in the literature. The results suggested the three traditional prominent models have been modified over time. Mental health consultation and behavioral consultation were consistently found within the top three models researched and referenced; however, organizational consultation was infrequently mentioned in the literature and researched in only 4% of the articles reviewed for this study. Therefore, it appeared that organizational consultation is no longer considered a prominent model of consultation. Analysis of the articles that were not research oriented indicated that 76% of the articles focused on application of consultation. The topics of multiculturalism, training, and ethics were the focal point to a lesser extent, with each representing fewer than 5% of articles. Research focused articles that involved aspects of both questionnaire and intervention research tools were employed more frequently than were research involving only questionnaire research or intervention research. Implications for the present findings and future directions for consultation research are discussed.

Abstract (sommario):
In this chapter we shall examine the theoretical assumptions that drive developmental psychology research and literature in South Africa. The basic underlying models utilised in developmental research may be described as (a) mechanistic; (b) organismic; (c) contextual and (d) social constructionist. A description of the fundamental premises of each of these will be followed by examples of research that utilise the particular approach. In the discussion, some of the controversies that plague developmental psychology research will be highlighted.

Abstract (sommario):
What do you get if you apply Ken Wilber’s theories of transpersonal psychological development within human consciousness to William Golding’s Lord of the Flies or Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, or Shakespeare’s Hamlet? Can they provide a clear interpretative tool in order to uncover the intentional or unintentional aspects of consciousness development contained within them? Do these literary texts reveal a coherent quest for knowledge of human consciousness, the nature of good and evil, and the ineffable question of spirit? Is there a case for presenting a transpersonal perspective of literature in order to expound the theories of this psychological discipline? Can literary texts provide materials that are unique to that art form and can be explicated by knowledge of transpersonal psychology? Is there an evolutionary motion, which is not necessarily historically chronological but nonetheless displays a developmental map of human consciousness across literary works? In other words, can we see a hierarchical framework along the lines of consciousness development as proposed by Ken Wilber, that suggests a movement up the evolutionary ladder of consciousness from Lord of the Flies to Hamlet and beyond? Can we counter oppose Lord of the Flies and Hamlet, suggesting that the first is a fable of regression to transpersonal evil within a cultural community and the second sees Hamlet attempt to avoid this path in order to move toward the transcendence of ego and self, within the individual? If this is so then we should be able to plot both paths relative to the models of development traced in Wilber’s theories and interpret the texts according to this framework. What is the relationship between transpersonal aspects of consciousness and literature? And what are the effects upon the cultural consciousness of human evolution that literature has had so much to inform? How do the literary works of individuals inform the cultural consciousness and transcend the age in which they are written? Equally we should be able to test the theories with the aid of some texts of literature – especially those works which are of, and about consciousness. What does this mean to the literary interpretation of these texts? How does it differ from other interpretations? What are the pitfalls and what disclaimers need to be put in place? Is the difference between the notion of a transpersonal evil and a transpersonal good simply a matter of individual moral choice?

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Book Summary: This inspiring resource presents theories, findings, and interventions from Positive Suicidology, an emerging strengths-based approach to suicide prevention. Its synthesis of positive psychology and suicidology theories offers a science-based framework for promoting wellbeing to complement or, if appropriate, replace traditional deficit-driven theories and therapies used in reducing suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Coverage reviews interpersonal, intrapersonal, and societal risk factors for suicide, and identifies protective factors, such as hope and resilience, that can be enhanced in therapy. From there, chapters detail a palette of approaches and applications of Positive Suicidology, from the powerful motivating forces described in Self-Determination Theory to meaning-building physical and social activities. Among the topics covered: Future-oriented constructs and their role in suicidal ideation and enactment. Gratitude as a protective factor for suicidal ideation and behavior: theory and evidence. Considering race and ethnicity in the use of positive psychological approaches to suicide. The Six R’s framework as mindfulness for suicide prevention. Community-based participatory research and empowerment for suicide prevention. Applied resiliency and suicide prevention: a strengths-based, risk-reduction framework. Psychotherapists, counselors, social workers, psychiatrists, and health psychologists, as well as educators, clergy and healthcare professionals, will find A Positive Psychological Approach to Suicide an invaluable source of contemporary evidence-based strategies for their prevention and intervention efforts with suicidal clients.

Aste, Julie A. "Chronic Pain and Stigma A Literature Review". Thesis, Union Institute and University, 2016. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10113719.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):

Chronic pain is a prevalent disorder that is difficult to treat and has the potential to be stigmatizing for individuals with chronic pain. An exploratory literature review was conducted to examine chronic pain stigma. The review specifically investigated studies that addressed individuals’ experiences of chronic pain stigma, identified sources of chronic pain stigma, and chronic pain stigma’s impact on treatment adherence. The following key terms were used to search 15 computerized databases (i.e. chronic pain AND stigma OR stigmatization OR disbelief OR stereotype OR invisible OR misconception). Studies were reviewed if they were relevant to chronic pain stigma, were conducted in the United States, the majority of participants were adults with a chronic pain condition, chronic pain condition was non-malignant, chronic pain was defined as persistent or intermittent for at least 3 months, and stigma was defined as being labeled, stereotyped, devalued, or discredited. The final review included 18 qualitative and quantitative studies from 1989-2015 that examined chronic pain and stigma. The findings of the study included twelve key themes that shed light on the experiences of stigma, sources of stigma, and impact on treatment adherence. Experiences of stigma included: estrangement, self-stigmatization, invisibility, medication stigma, and disbelief. The participants in the studies identified three sources of stigma: doctors, public, and family. Four themes emerged from the few studies that addressed treatment adherence: difficulty communicating about pain, management strategies, to seek care or not seek care, and to not take medications due to fears of addiction and stigma. The findings are further discussed in relation to the United State’s societal values, beliefs, and culture. A cultural shift is suggested in how we view chronic pain and illness. Additionally, recommendations are made for the role of psychologists addressing chronic pain stigma from a multi-systems level approach. Keywords: Chronic pain, stigma, disbelief, diagnostic uncertainty, illegitimacy

Abstract (sommario):

The cultural movement toward abbreviation and multitasking detracts from the desire and also, potentially, the ability to begin engaging in deep reading. This is problematic, considering that the deep reading of narrative fiction has many potential benefits. Through the use of both heuristic and hermeneutic methodology, this thesis takes a look at the psychological and scientific literature that explores the relationship between reading narrative fiction and an increase in both empathy and theory of mind skills; how the art of reading narrative fiction can be viewed from a depth psychological perspective; and the author’s personal experience with reading narrative fiction. This information is then utilized to explore how these components can be applied within the psychotherapy process through the use of bibliotherapy, as well as how it can be a valuable tool for one’s own personal growth and exploration outside of a therapy setting.

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis advisor: Rosemarie Bodenheimer
By focusing on the predominance of semi-conscious and unconscious states in both nineteenth-century British literature and psychology, this dissertation outlines the recognizable and multi-faceted relation existing between literature and psychology. Besides their obvious prevalence in sensation novels later in the period, these states, which I call ecstatic states, appeared in many of the most prominent, canonical novels of the nineteenth century. Prominent Victorian psychologists, such as Robert MacNish, John Abercrombie, James Cowles Prichard, and Forbes Winslow among others, connected ecstatic states, including fiction reading, to insanity, since these states exhibited an underlying component of self-loss in which the boundaries of the conscious self--time, will, and identity--dissolved. They were a troubling, yet common phenomenon of the mind that preoccupied the entire spectrum of middle class Victorian intellectual life--businessmen, novelists, literary critics, and psychologists--and these states are still fascinating neuroscientists today. This study shows how the Victorian medical practice of moral management sought to control these states by calling for the regulation and often the confinement of the imagination. What began as a method used solely in the insane asylum came to undergird much of Victorian life, including the many hostile reactions to the addictive and class-leveling powers of the novel. My dissertation emphasizes how certain Victorian novelists not only took up the role of psychologists themselves but also resisted and revised accepted psychology within their novels. Charlotte Brontë, Charles Dickens, and George Eliot reacted in distinctive ways against the oppressive tenets of moral management. My readings of the novels Jane Eyre, Villette, Hard Times, Our Mutual Friend, The Mill on the Floss, and Romola show how it is the unrelenting regulation of the imagination that creates the various forms of mania and becomes ultimately devastating to the self. For these novelists, the dismantling of conscious thought and will, so alarming to the advocates of moral management, formed the crux of personal growth, moral choice, and ethical responsiveness

Abstract (sommario):
My studies consider the genre of children's literature, specifically picture books, and their treatment of the topic of diabetes. I frame my argument with an examination of diabetes, the psychological effects of diabetes on the child, the need of thorough education about diabetes. I argue for the use of the picture book as an effect tool in educating and socializing the diabetic child. I first explore the implications of diabetes and the long term complications caused by one's poor control of the disease. I then explore the psychological ramifications of a chronic illness on the young child. Next I assert the need to combine the physiological and psychological factors of diabetes into a responsible text for children, one which both serves as an educating tool and a source of comfort in difficult times with the disease. I conclude my studies with critiques of existing materials in the limited genre and compare them to the story I have written for children about diabetes.

Abstract (sommario):
Personality disorders offer clinicians a unique diagnostic challenge. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between literature size and diagnostic accuracy for personality disorders. The data used in this study were taken from the Blashfield & Intoccia (2000) and Blashfield & Herkov (1996) studies. The data were analyzed using a combination of correlations and single subject experimental designs. The results indicated that from 1980 to 1987 as literature size increased diagnostic accuracy increased across personality disorders. When examining literature growth three personality disorders (borderline, schizotypal, antisocial) appear to be carrying the literature growth for the group. These three personality disorders have a top five diagnostic accuracy rating. Possible explanations for this relationship as well as implications for future research are discussed.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Pregnancy has evolved from being predominantly understood as a medical phenomenon to what psychoanalytic theorists would regard as a holistic experience encompassing both physiological and psychological changes. According to psychoanalytic theorists, pregnancy is a transitional phase and a time of susceptibility and flux for most women. This often results in psychic turmoil where boundaries between conscious and unconscious process become more permeable. The pregnant woman's dreams and fantasies create an inner working model of relationships and this in tum provides a template of how her relationship with her baby will be experienced and conducted. This link to the unconscious increases insight into the process occurring between the woman and her evolving relationship with the fetus and provides the health professional with clues for early intervention. However care should be taken by health-care professionals to communicate the psychological processes during pregnancy within the cultural framework of the pregnancy mother for positive outcomes to be achieved.

Taylor, Jenny Bourne. "Wilkie Collins and nineteenth-century psychology : cultural significance and fictional form". Thesis, University of Warwick, 1987. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/110020/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis considers the relationship between the novels of Wilkie Collins and nineteenth-century psychological methods and ideas. It explores the ways in which Collins extrapolates from these theories by appropriating them as means both of generating suspense and resolving tension, and shows how an investigation of these psychological ideas elucidates his fiction. The Introduction briefly reviews Collins's development as a sensation novelist in relationship to contemporary sensation fiction. Chapter One outlines the wide range of psychological ideas that have a direct bearing on Collins's work. It considers, firstly, how the meaning both of insanity and of social identity was shaped by the development of the asylum system and the precepts of moral management - precepts that encapsulated many of the aspirations of early Victorian liberalism. Secondly it considers mid- nineteenth-century debates on the workings of the mind: debates about how to understand identity, about how to analyse the workings of the consciousness, and about how to interpret the significance of aberrant states and unconscious mental processes. Thirdly it summarises how conceptions of evolution and heredity developed in the second half of the nineteenth century. The analysis of the novels emphasises Collins's development of narrative strategies. It explores how he both assimilates and resists contemporary psychological perceptions in his manipulation of narrative perspective and time, and how the development of this narrative method links the conjuring with perception and cognition with the exploration of the subjective shaping of social identity. Moral management provides the overarching framework for Collins's stories and is usually the source of narrative resolution, but it is qualified and undermined. In Basil and The Woman in White it is a primary source of tension and suspense; in No Name it is both undermined and underpinned by juggling with contrasting notions of evolution. Armadale draws on contemporary theories of dreams to explore social and psychic inheritance and transmission; The Moonstone appropriates contrasting theories of the unconscious in a complex cognitive investigation. The final chapter briefly discusses a selection of the later novels, considering their distinctive features, and arguing that the growing dominance of theories of degeneration had an important bearing on Collins's method in his later work.

Abstract (sommario):

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Maternal filicide, the murder of a child by its mother, is a complex phenomenon with various causes and characteristics. Research, by means of the development of several classification systems and in identifying particular risk factors, has been conducted with the aim of better prevention of this emotionally evocative crime. Various disciplines have offered a wide range of perspectives on why women kill their biological children. These are intended to yield a better understanding of the aetiology of this crime. This literature review delineates three dominant perspectives: psychiatric, psychological, and sociological. The main findings of each perspective are discussed. However, these three perspectives frequently operate in conjunction with each other in that both intrapsychic and interpersonal dynamics play a role in acts of maternal filicide. The most vulnerable women appear to be those who have had a severely deficient developmental history (trauma and/or grossly inadequate parenting), those who experience current difficult psychosocial circumstances, and those who have been diagnosed with a psychiatric illness. However, not all women who experience such problems kill their children. In this regard, individual differences have an important role to play and more carefully delineated future research is suggested. One of the most significant findings of this literature review is that there appears to be a paucity of systematic research on the South African phenomenon of parental child homicide.

Abstract (sommario):
Rapid escalation of Subclinical Eating Disorders (SED) in the form of high levels of body–dissatisfaction (BD) and drive for thinness (DT) globally and locally, and the at–risk status of university females are underscored by recent studies. As yet there exists no South African program tailored to the needs of afflicted female students and which includes a risk–protective focus grounded in Positive Psychology theory. In this chapter a theoretical overview on the nature and definition of SED, its prevalence and the rationale for a risk–protective focus grounded in Positive Psychology theory are provided. Thereafter three preliminary South African studies, namely two correlation studies (De Pãz Fransisco, 2007; Kirsten, Du Plessis & Swanepoel, 2010) and the Weight Over–concern and Well–being program of Kirsten, Du Plessis and Du Toit (2007) are discussed. Findings of these preliminary studies highlight the promise of utilizing Positive Psychology theoretical approaches to practically significantly reduce risk factors and promote protective factors. As such, Well–being therapy (Fava & Ruini, 2003) that promotes the six dimensions of psychological well–being (Ryff & Keyes, 1995), and Self–Determination Theory (Ryan & Deci, 2000) that can promote true self–esteem in the form of self–determination and mindfulness (Kabat–Zinn, 1998), with its inherent self–compassion, kindness and self–forgiving manner, show promise. More in–depth studies with larger samples are however needed.

Abstract (sommario):
As a multi-dimensional concept, empathy suffers from vague and inconsistent definitions which makes it difficult to compare results between studies and advance knowledge about empathic abilities and experiences. Most commonly, empathy involves an aspect of cognition, emotional sharing, and distinction between the self and the other. The Late positive potential (LPP) is an emotion-sensitive event-related potential (ERP) that is increasingly used to study empathic abilities. As one of the later components it has shown robust sensitivity to emotional stimuli compared to neutral and is often associated with cognitive processing of emotions. In this review, a total of n = 30 ERP studies was investigated in order to investigate how the concept of empathy is studied in terms of conceptual definition, task operationalisation, and relation to the LPP. Results in the studies mainly confirm the emotion effect on LPP and a tendency for enhanced LPP in conditions of self-focus. Conceptualisations of empathy are multifaceted and the LPP is predominantly interpreted as a marker for cognitive processing of emotional content in empathic responding. However, there is still no clear picture about the specifics of these underlying cognitive modulations.

Seibert, Michelle L. "Consultation in the School Psychology Literature: Has the Field Moved beyond the Three Traditional Models?" TopSCHOLAR®, 2010. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/145.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Consultation is a crucial role for school psychology practitioners. Psychologists routinely use consultation within the schools and actually wish they could spend more of their work hours on this activity. However, when authors write about consultation in the school psychology literature, they use numerous terms and phrases, which cause confusion as to what models of consultation are prominent in the field. The focus of the current study is to examine the articles that mention consultation in School Psychology Review (Digest) in order to determine whether the three traditional models (behavioral, mental health, and organizational consultation) are still prominent in consultation research and school psychology literature. Analyses of all articles containing the word "consultation" and all words preceding the word "consultation" were done to find the most frequently mentioned consultation terms. Analyses were then done on just the consultation research articles as well as other sources in order to find which terms are most frequently mentioned as part of studies and how the most prominent terms originated. The findings revealed that while behavioral consultation seems to be the traditional model still dominating the literature, mental health and organizational are beginning to fall behind in a shift from using specific models to more frequently using generic terms such as school, school-based or teacher consultation.

Abstract (sommario):
The best selling literature on relationships is written in terms of gender differences. Information and advice from psychologists and counselors is directed to either females or males based on counseling clients and personal experience. In this study, I present evidence that a gender list of attitudes and needs without age considerations cannot provide accurate information. This study included a sample of 1020 volunteers from a randomized group of individuals attending jury duty in Pima County, Arizona. The participants answered a questionnaire consisting of 44 items developed from four authors' best selling books on information and advice on relationships. The participant responses were evaluated in terms of three factors: gender, attendance in counseling, and age. Phi coefficients were calculated for the gender and counseling factors. Eta coefficients were calculated for females and males across four age groups. Meaningful results were determined by Cohen's criteria of effect size. Item responses were compared with expectations from the literature. The results indicate gender and age are necessary to accurately determine relationship attitudes and needs. The factors of gender and age provided specific information for females and males across age groups unavailable with dichotomous gender designations. The counseling sample did not respond consistently when compared to the non-counseling sample on items relating to counseling subjects. A comparison of item responses to the literature suggests participants did not respond to items consistently with information and advice in current self-help literature.

Kenny, Maeve. "Understanding change in psychotherapy : the literature and parents' experiences". Thesis, Canterbury Christ Church University, 2015. http://create.canterbury.ac.uk/13808/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Understanding how change occurs in psychotherapy is imperative in informing clinical practice. Increasing attention has been given to the role that qualitative research could play in enhancing our understanding of therapeutic change. Although quantitative research suggests that parent-child psychotherapy is effective in facilitating change, no research to date has focused on how parents make sense of their change experience. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was used to analyse semi-structured interviews of eight parents who had completed parent-child psychotherapy about their understanding of change. Five master themes emerged which encapsulated participant’s understanding of change. These included constructing a survivor narrative, the experience of being understood enabling further understanding, adjusting expectations and practicing acceptance and feeling empowered to relinquish control. The final theme summarised how despite psychotherapy being conceptualised as a ‘precious’ resource, there was a sense that its limitations could negatively impact participant’s wellbeing. The study concluded that meaningful elements of change were identified from the parents’ experience. Findings were discussed in relation to previous research. Limitations and implications for future research and practice were examined.

The significant changes to the political landscape of South Africa since the abolition of apartheid and the implementation of democracy have had far-reaching effects in social order and gender relations. With the new dispensation has come the promise of new opportunities for men and women of all races to participate fully in the creation of a multicultural society, making the issue of transformation an important agenda. As a social artifact, children's literature has also been influenced by these changes, and the didactic function of this medium make it an interesting site to explore the ways in which historical stereotypes are both perpetuated and challenged. This study focused on the representation of black masculinity in a sample of South African children's literature published after apartheid. The aim was to investigate how race, gender, and class intersect in the representation of black masculinity.

O'Connor, Maureen Ann 1956. "Gender and the definition of sexual harassment: A meta-analysis of the empirical literature". Diss., The University of Arizona, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/282643.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
To prove a hostile environment sexual harassment claim, a plaintiff must show that the alleged conduct was sufficiently severe or pervasive to have created a hostile, intimidating, or abusive work environment. In determining whether that standard has been met, courts ask whether a reasonable person in the same or similar circumstances would have found the conduct harassing. Since 1991, some courts have determined that this objective standard can best be operationalized by asking the triers of fact to view the behavior from a "reasonable woman's" perspective. In the landmark case, Ellison v. Brady, the court justified the need for a sex-specific standard by implicitly relying on findings from social science research suggesting that men and women differ in how they define sexual harassment. A meta-analysis of 79 studies that examined male/female differences on definition of sexual harassment was conducted. A small but persistent sex effect was found (r=.1635) such that women tend to have broader definitions of sexual harassment than men. A closer look at male/female differences on individual stimuli showed that they varied considerably, however, suggesting that the important differences may relate more to the type of behavior being evaluated than to the sex of the evaluator. Additional research exploring these stimulus effects should be conducted.

MacTaggart, JoAnne Kay. "Promoting resilience in psychotherapy interns through supervision| An integrated literature review". Thesis, Saybrook Graduate School and Research Center, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3642966.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):

Psychotherapy interns often report feeling traumatized by the process that attempts to match them with an internship site. Once placed, feeling unsupported in one's supervisory relationship may lead to burnout, which contributes to high rates of attrition. A supportive relationship between supervisors and interns appears significant to the development of their early professional resilience. This integrative literature review asks, "How do therapists at all stages of their career achieve and maintain professional resilience?" and "What is inherent in the supervisory relationship that influences such growth and resilience in interns?"

Literature on psychotherapy supervision, professional trauma, compassion fatigue, and resilience was selected from the psychodynamic, psychoanalytic, and existential-humanistic traditions as well as from relational neuroscience. This literature was integrated in such a way as to define, compare and contrast these concepts.

Psychotherapists report a variety of historic traumas that contribute to their choice of psychotherapy as a profession. Therapists also identify as falling on a dynamic spectrum of resilience, reporting both personal and professional protective and risk factors. Psychodynamic, psychoanalytic, and existential-humanistic training and professional models continue to highlight the value of the supervisory and consultant relationship in support of recovery from professional overwhelm toward lasting personal and professional resilience. Therapists at all stages of their career report achieving and maintaining professional resilience by practicing individualized self-care, engaging in dynamic personal psychotherapy, and through supportive relationships in supervision and consultation. The primary element in the supervisory relationship that promotes growth and resilience in interns is the ability of the empathic supervisor to privilege the supervisee's experience in the supervisory relationship as well as with their mutual clients.

A supervisory model emerged that (a) elevates personal history and awareness of an intern's preexisting risk and protective factors, (b) promotes in-session self-awareness, and (c) draws on existential-humanistic theory, leading to the development of resilience. This model serves to support the humanity of the intern and supervisor as evolving professionals while respecting and perhaps enhancing the orientation of the training site.

Sharpnack, Jim D. "The Efficacy of Group Bereavement Interventions: An Integrative Review of the Research Literature". DigitalCommons@USU, 2000. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/6005.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This study involves a meta-analysis of the extant English language literature reporting studies of the effectiveness of bereavement therapeutic interventions. Twenty-six studies (20 adult studies; 6 child studies) were located and served as the database for the current meta-analytic study. Questions asked of the studies in this meta-analysis included: Describe background variables of subjects seeking bereavement group interventions. Describe leader variables of persons leading bereavement group interventions. Describe intervention variables in bereavement group interventions. The major finding of the meta-analysis was that children and adult experimental subjects benefitted from the grief interventions in comparison to their control counterparts. The ratio of female to male subjects was 4: 1. The majority of the subjects were Caucasians. The most common reported cause of death was due to disease. The most common relationship loss was the death of a spouse. Protestants and Catholics were the most common reported religious groups. The leadership of most studies consisted of either one or two leaders. Most leaders were females, and only Caucasian leaders were reported. The majority of leaders were students, and most leaders reported having a master's degree as their terminal degree. Leaders with and without previous bereavement group experience occurred at about the same rates. A pretest-posttest control group design was the most common study design, but only five studies used random assignment. The mean number of treatment weeks was 7.8, and the mean number of treatment hours was 14.8. Group therapy was used in 21 studies . One examined study utilized self-help treatment; two studies used education as the intervention format. Six studies were coded as "other'' types of interventions. The most common evaluation tool was a depression measure. Effect size information suggested that bereaved subjects participating in group interventions improved in comparison to control subjects. This study identified a number of problems with past bereavement research that included the following issues: small groups, poor choices of evaluation tools, use of a pre/posttest design, lack of random assignment when using control groups, lack of follow-up data, eclectic theoretical orientations used in treatment, lack of information reported in studies, and heterogeneous groups making it difficult to draw conclusions about specific groups.

Abstract (sommario):

The present study is a critical analysis of the literature about motivation in the treatment of anorexia nervosa. This dissertation provides a comprehensive overview of the theoretical and empirical literature on motivation to change in the treatment of anorexia nervosa, including discussion of the support for factors hypothesized to be associated with treatment motivation as well as identification of factors that require additional study. It will also provide conceptual clarity of motivation as a construct in anorexia nervosa treatment research. Current literature reveals how differences in the way motivation is conceptualized, studied, and assessed may limit our understanding of its role in anorexia nervosa treatment. Recommendations are therefore made regarding the adoption of a more consistent and shared understanding of the construct.

Longstreth, Heather. "The effects of yoga on stress response and memory| A literature review". Thesis, Roosevelt University, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1569658.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):

Chronic over-activity of the body's endocrine stress response system is detrimental to overall health and, over time, may have a negative impact on the structure and function of the hippocampus, a key brain area involved in episodic memory consolidation. Yoga is becoming an increasingly popular mind-body therapy used to reduce and prevent the harmful effects of stress on the body. This review presents a summary of the research investigating yoga as a therapeutic intervention to reduce both perceived and physiological stress in healthy adults. Studies looking at the effects of yoga on hippocampal-dependent memory function in children, adults, and elderly populations were also reviewed. Research investigating the stress-reducing effects of yoga has indicated that yoga may hold therapeutic value in reducing both perceived and physiological stress in healthy populations. In children, yoga has been shown to improve spatial, but not verbal, memory. In adults and elderly individuals, studies indicate improvements in both short and long-term verbal recall following yoga intervention. Elderly individuals also showed increased hippocampal volume following long-term yoga practice. Due to the shortage of empirical evidence, along with several shared methodological limitations, further investigation is still needed to fully determine the efficacy of yoga as a beneficial mind-body therapy for decreasing both perceived and physiological stress-response, improving memory, and preventing stress and age-related hippocampal volume loss.

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (MA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2002
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This paper is an attempt to explore the appropriateness of the use of the specific psychological paradigm of dissociation as a possible response to pregnancy in lowincome women. Low-income women who fail to acknowledge their pregnancies may do so in an attempt to defend against feelings of fear, anxiety and helplessness engendered by the crisis of pregnancy. A dissociative response may serve to protect the expectant mother from conscious awareness of the full impact of what is happening, in other words, to provide psychological escape when physical escape is not possible. Such a response may initially be adaptive in that it provides these women with a means of coping. Dissociative processes allow, in the context of an inescapable crisis, the economizing of already limited physical and psychological resources. However, the prolonged use of dissociative strategies during pregnancy may have far-reaching implications, and, as such, be a hindrance to adaptive functioning.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis has three primary objectives and is organized into two separate but related manuscripts: In the first manuscript, entitled A Review of Client Involvement in Psychotherapy, the goal is to provide a thorough review of the involvement literature and to present a theoretical conceptualization of client involvement that could clarify our understanding of involvement. Specifically, it is argued that client involvement is composed of two facets, the internal and external processes which guide whether a client will participate in therapy. The goal of the second manuscript, which is entitled Factor Analysis and Construct Validity of a Measure of Client Involvement, is to evaluate a factor model of client involvement based on empirical data. The client involvement measure is the Comprehensive Scale of Psychotherapy Session Constructs Client Involvement subscale (CSPSC-CI; Eugster & Wampold, 1996), and it has not previously been independently evaluated. The psychometric properties of this measure were examined. Factor analysis of the CSPSC-CI revealed three interpretable factors: a Client factor, an Active Therapist factor, and a Disengaged Therapist factor. Discriminant and convergent construct validity was also evaluated; the results of the study provide preliminary support for the construct validity of the measure.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This literature review explores the research on the clinical presentation of childhood onset schizophrenia (COS) that has been conducted over the past ten years. A literature search was done using internet search engines and psychological databases to collect English language journals from 1994 onwards. Research indicates that COS is a stable diagnosis. Generally, there is a clear history of premorbid abnormalities, an insidious onset and a deteriorating course. For the majority of cases there seems to be a poor outcome. In conclusion, despite the limitations in the research conducted thus far, findings provide important insights regarding COS and several possibilities for future research.

Abstract (sommario):

Depression is a serious condition experienced by many individuals diagnosed with coronary heart disease (CHD). Depression after CHD diagnosis has been associated with poor cardiac prognosis, cardiac mortality, and is postulated to influence adherence to physician recommendations, including attendance at cardiac rehabilitation programs. Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is an empirically supported secondary intervention for cardiac patients and is recommended by the American Heart Association (AHA) and the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) to reduce disease progression, however many CR participants do not complete. A number of studies have investigated depression and phase II CR programs. The goal of the current systematic literature review and meta-analysis was to explore the association between depression and phase II CR completion. A literature search cross-referenced three electronic databases (PsycINFO, MEDLINE, Dissertation Abstracts International) up through December 2014. Studies quantifying an association between depression and phase II CR completion were reviewed. After duplicate studies were removed and study inclusion criteria applied, 17 observational studies with 19 independent samples consisting of 30,586 cardiac patients remained for meta-analysis. A random-effects model found a moderate inverse relationship between depression and phase II CR completion (g = -.44, 95% CI -.59 to -.29), indicating that depressed CR patients were significantly less likely to complete their program. A minor amount of publication bias was detected with a funnel plot and trim-and-fill analysis. No significant moderator variables were detected.

Goddard, Kevin Graham. "Versions of confinement: Melville's bodies and the psychology of conquest". Thesis, Rhodes University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002259.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis explores aspects of Melville’s presentation of both the whale and the human bodies in Moby-Dick and human bodies in other important novels. It argues that Melville uses his presentation of bodies to explore some of the versions of confinement those bodies experience, and by doing so, analyses the psychology which subtends that confinement. Throughout Melville’s works bodies are confined, both within literal spatial limits and by the psychology which creates and/or accepts these spatial limits. The thesis argues that perhaps the most important version of bodily confinement Melville addresses is the impulse to conquer bodies, both that of the other and one’s own. It adopts a largely psychoanalytic approach to interpreting bodies and their impulse to conquer, so that the body is seen to figure both in its actions and its external appearance the operations of the inner psyche. The figure of the body is equally prevalent in Melville’s exploration of nationalist conquest, where, as with Manifest Destiny and antebellum expansionism, the psychological and physical lack experienced by characters can be read as motivating factors in the ideology of conquest. A final important strand of the thesis is its argument in favour of a gradual shift in Melville’s interpretation of the value and possibility of genuine communion between human beings and between humans and the whale. One may read Typee as an attempt by Melville to explore the possibility of a this-worldly utopia in which human beings can return to a version of primitive interconnectedness. This exploration may be seen to be extended in Moby-Dick, particularly in Ishmael’s attempts to find communion with others and in some moments of encounter with the whales. The thesis uses phenomenology as a theory to interpret what Melville is trying to suggest in these moments of encounter. However, it argues, finally, that such encounter, or ‘intersubjectivity’ is eventually jettisoned, especially in the works after Moby-Dick. By the end of Melville’s life and work, any hope of an intersubjective utopia he may have harboured as a younger man have been removed in favour of a refusal actually to assert any final ‘truth’ about social, political or even religious experience. Billy Budd, his last body, is hanged, and his final word is silence.

Abstract (sommario):

This critical analysis of the literature is a comprehensive collection and review of the literature on the strengths-based perspective as it is applied to the treatment of substance use disorders. Literature was collected, analyzed, and critically evaluated to consolidate the existing research on strengths-based treatment approaches, identify ways in which the strengths-based perspective is congruent with culturally competent practice, and to identify strengths, weaknesses, and gaps in the literature. Analyses reveal that there are numerous components of the strengths-based perspective that are congruent with culturally competent practice and that strengths-based treatment approaches may serve as an effective adjunct or alternative to traditional treatment approaches for substance use disorders. While additional research is needed to further our understanding of the effectiveness of this approach, preliminary results indicate that there are numerous therapeutic advantages associated with the strengths-based perspective and its use with substance abusing populations.

Abstract (sommario):
There is a significant attitude of scepticism when it comes to belief in the existence of writer's block as a valid psychological phenomenon, alongside what might be described as the "Tortured Artist Personality". It is contended here that both writer's block and the "Tortured Artist Personality" do exist in a minority of professional and aspiring fiction writers, and furthermore that these phenomena are forms of personality behaviour that have already been well-catalogued by the academic fields of psychiatry, psychology and psychotherapy: specifically, writer's block is a form of unconscious maladaptive procrastination - expressed through avoidance coping or escape coping behaviour - which in turn arises from the fully-accepted personality trait of perfectionism. Aspects of perfectionism, together with various sub-scale traits and mediators, are also the key components in at least one form of "Tortured Artist Personality". This paper lays out the extensive evidence for these assertions, using existing research in the fields of psychology, psychiatry, psychotherapy and neuroscience.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):

Throughout the United States are institutions abundant with violent offenders who have been found not guilty by reason of insanity (NGI). The decision to release these insanity acquittees into the community is a vital one, both for the patient and the larger community. While these decisions should be informed by evaluations that combine clinicians’ opinions with validated tools of assessment, no standard of care regarding such evaluations exists. Forensic specialists are thus often left to base discharge decisions on clinical judgment alone. This dissertation assumed a critical review of the theoretical and empirical literature relevant to conditional release decisions of NGI patients, including the research on structured assessment of risk of future violence. Based on this critical review, the author proposed recommendations for five standards to enhance conditional release decision-making for violent offenders in forensic settings: (a) Adherence to professional and ethical conduct; (b) documentation of patient progress; (c) incorporation of empirically-validated risk assessment tools; (d) creation of a comprehensive release plan; (e) verification of patient’s commitment to successful reintegration. This dissertation additionally examined the strengths and limitations of the critical review strategy, as well as delineated areas for research to empirically evaluate the recommended standards and promote improved quality of conditional release evaluation for NGI acquittees.
