Abstract (sommario):
The disobedience of traffic rules is a public health problem. There is an absence of understanding driving behavior from Zizekian psychoanalysis. The general scope of this research is based on the interdisciplinary approach in a Transformative Social Marketing. The theoretical implication presents a new view of human behavior inspired from Zizekian psychoanalysis (based on "conscious/unconscious" in a continuous process, Real-Symbolic-Imaginary Triad, Reflexivity, Interpassivity, authentic act). Three groups (Pleasing, Care, Refuge) emerge from the Real-Symbolic-Imaginary Triad that orients behaviors to obey or disobey traffic rules. The methodological implication is the "psychoanalytic map" as a new methodological tool for more understanding the complexity of driving behavior. The practical implication is an authentic act, emerged from the driver, to choose a personalized message which changes after a period using VANet technology

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 2002.
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 75-77).
The objective of this thesis is to explore the relationship between the self and the house. In approaching the subject, my assumptions were that the basic condition of the house-self relationship is of tension and animosity and that architectural design, following a psychoanalytical tendency to reduce tension, is used to improve this condition. When great amounts of energy and care are invested in this process, the narrative of tension and its resolution is brought to the surface through architectural drawings. Based on these assumptions I developed a methodology of analyzing architectural process drawings. In applying this methodology, the process of tension reduction through design is uncovered. Similarly to psychoanalysis, this methodology privileges process and the observation of change over time. In order to test these assumptions, I chose three case studies of house designed by architects either for themselves, or for a close family relation. I focused on cases where process drawings were available, and applied the methodology of tracing changes from scheme to scheme. I gave special attention to the arrangement of bedrooms and bathrooms, but considered many other aspects of design. In each case study, the house has its own narrative of tension which is resolved through its design. This narrative is not an analysis of the architect, nor is it architectural criticism, it is something that happens when self and house come together through design.

Rae, Andrew Kenneth McKenzie. "Psychoanalysis and realism". Thesis, Rhodes University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1003035.

Abstract (sommario):
International politics has always been characterised by conflict. This has been true regardless of the political systems in place or of any specific time in the history of humanity. Inter-state conflict exists today despite the fact that the vast majority of the states of the world are members of the United Nations and signatories to various treaties aimed at removing conflict as a means of state action. The realist school of thought argues that the international system is characterised by continual state conflict, caused by competition over scarce resources. The propensity towards conflict is argued to be an essential characteristic of human nature and, as such, human nature is considered to be aggressive and conflictual. Thus, for the realist, inter-state competition, coupled with aggressive human nature, constitutes the primary cause of interstate conflict. This thesis aims to examine two criticisms of the realist position in depth. The first concerns the attribution of human nature to states. This logical progression is problematic because it creates a type of „state-nature‟ that cannot be defended without providing a logical link between the individual, the group and the state. It is therefore an aim of this thesis to provide this link, using methodological individualism, in order to provide a basis for the attribution of human nature to states. The second aim of this thesis is to examine the notion of human nature that is offered by the realists. It is not enough to claim that human nature is aggressive and conflictual merely because conflict has characterised international relations throughout history. Rather, one should examine the individual‟s psychological development, in order to gain an understanding of aggressive instincts apparent in human nature. The thesis therefore examines psychoanalysis in order to attempt an understanding both of human nature, and of the conditions under which human nature may manifest itself in an aggressive, conflictual manner. The intention of this thesis, then, is to provide a defence of political realism, highlighting the shortcomings of the two criticisms outlined above.

Around the psychoanalysis object argues the relationship among psychoanalysis and science focusing the psychoanalysis object specificity. Going from contemporary epistemologic debate context to the psychoanalysis birth, it considers Freud s dilemas in locating this new knowhow field that was born out of the science s ideal that demands a clearly definite object, and as Lacan retakes this dilema. It defines the specific field of the psychoanalysis performance, called by Freud of psychic reality and wich characterizes itself for being a sexual reality. It is in this sexual term that the psychoanalysis object locates itself and that Lacan names it object a. It Brings as question what would be the psychoanalysis objectalism, neologism that Lacan considers to oppose itself to science s objectivism.

The thesis presents a study of addictions through the psychoanalytic point of view. The view that presides the study is that the fellow addict runs an appeal to the Other through the use of the drug to make the paternal function present. From this perspective, the drug contains a message addressed to another so that a cut should be operated in the relationship without limits built with the drug. It will not treat the organic effects produced by the use of the substance, but the unique function that the drug might occupy a person. In the first chapter, the introduction, the object of the work will be circumscribed: the addictions. In the second chapter it will examine the phenomenon of drugs in perversion, in neurosis and psychosis. In the third chapter, it will launch a glimpse into the drug through the concepts of superego, drive satisfaction, ego ideal and the death drive. In the fourth chapter it will present the construction of dependence relations in addictions and how drug use can serve as a call to a father. We will also study the signifier in the dialectic of the desire in order to locate the place of the drug to the addict. Then, assuming that the weakness or ineffectiveness of the paternal function provides the compulsion to object drug as a way to solve the anguish caused by the effects of castration, it will investigate the drug problem from the significant Name of the Father and the paternal metaphor.

Dream, Narrative and Psychoanalysis is a proposal to articulate the three axes that name this dissertation. The material presented here is an attempt to explore a theory drawing on the combination of those axes, and it represents an effort to bring psychoanalysis to the field of fictional narrative studies. Thus, the chapters of the dissertation are divided based on the intersections between the axes: dream and psychoanalysis; psychoanalysis and narrative; narrative and dream. What is proposed here is an investigation around the language of the unconscious, drawing on the material of dreams, and examining some literary and cinematographic poetics with oneiric features. Psychoanalysis and its influence on theories of art after the 1980 s were elected as the epistemological pillars, highlighting the works of Paul Ricoeur and Peter Brooks and Lacan-inspired critique, here represented by Jean-Pierre Oudart and Hal Foster. To what extent is psychoanalysis valuable for the field of narrative studies? Where to seek knowledge about narratives through dreams and psychoanalysis? Distortion seemed like something to be noted and comprehended. With awareness of the archive fever, it was selected as the key to our reading, a reading that summons the subject. Searching for the place of the subject, of the suture, of the in-between, that place where the subject is summoned, may be the privileged way to bring psychoanalysis to the field of arts, insofar as it is understood that art entails a (virtual) production and a (virtual) reading of the (hidden) archive, and it is taken into account its differentiated, deformed, distorted archiving. The first part of the dissertation serves to present the theoretical terms that are going to be addressed, giving them a context, but also seeking to integrate the Freudian texts in a specific way, within our purposes. In the second part, some attempts of applying psychoanalysis to the field of arts are approached, and three paths stood out within the scope of this research. First, that of the critique that proceeds analogically to the dream model, presented by Paul Ricoeur, who identified the oneiric in general by seeing in dreams the value of a model. A second possible path was outlined by Peter Brooks, who proposes thinking of an economic model of narrative as a spatial-temporal structure based on Freud s economic model. The third path to bring psychoanalysis and art together is inspired by Lacan, foregrounding the issue of the subject s place in a topological framework. Finally, drawing on those three paths of psychoanalysis applied to the field of the arts in general, and of the narrative art in particular, the theoretical basis will have been laid for the critical analysis of an author from Poland, Bruno Schulz, and of an original screenplay, that unfolded from an image in a dream.

Abstract (sommario):
Through an attractive hypothesis of work, we present the relaTionship between the frontal lobes and the neurobiological bases of Freud's psychoanalytic theory. We review and discuss the psycophysiological and clinical aproachs, in order to understand this relationship, arriving to the final examination of the organic and functional "disolutions" of the brain. We study and discuss the clinical progressive symptoms of the dementia and the differencial diagnosis of abnormal behavior, inrerpreted under the bases of Freud's theory. In this way it would be possible to arrive through some tempting interpretation of the psychopatic behavior, drug addiction and the last "syndrome of terrorism".

Abstract (sommario):
A reading of the first volume of Sigmund Freud's Introductory Lectures on Psychoanalysis (1916-17 [1915-17]), concentrating on the account of the technique for the interpretation of dreams. In these lectures Freud attempts to elaborate an empirical model for the investigation and explanation of the dream. Closer examination of this argument, however, quickly brings to light certain diffIculties that allow us to question whether the validity of psychoanalytic procedures could ever be sustained in these terms. It is suggested that this account requires the introduction of conditions and assumptions of another order. This argument amounts to a critique of the attempt to provide empirical foundations for certain key psychoanalytic concepts, in favour of a deduction of the validity of those concepts at the level of formal conditions of the technique of interpretation itself. It suggests that the legitimacy of that technique of interpretation depends upon a particular mode of deduction that can be considered characteristic of psychoanalytic procedure in general. The validity of the central concepts of psychoanalysis is then to be considered in terms of the procedure of argument from which their status is derived. Two models of psychoanalytic investigation are considered - an empirical model for the explanation of the dream and a more formal account of the fundamental principles of interpretation. The thesis concludes that these two models are not in fact exclusive but are rather complementary, and that a comprehensive statement of the conditions of validity of the technique of psychoanalytic interpretation can only be achieved through their interaction and articulation. At the same time it attempts to demonstrate that these issues have a fundamental influence upon our conception of the orientation and goals of that technique of interpretation.

This thesis seeks to investigate the way psychoanalysis creates or builds new knowledge around the mental life. Therefore, the research goal is also to evaluate the development process of these procedures based on Freud s investigations, just like its application, focusing in the relationship between the procedures and Freud s theory over the mental processes. Moreover, the changes occured in the procedures are assessed by post-freud famous analysts and their clinical contribution, such as Ferenczi, Winnicott, Melanie Klein, Anna Freud e Lacan. Secondarily, we try to relate both technical and theoretical practices in psychoanalysis from authors arisen from philosophy such as Bruno Latour e Isabelle Stengers, using concepts of hybrids, circular reference and the Actor-Network Theory in establishing the connection between technique and theory, in this new science started up by Freud.

By exploring the logical status of the psychoanalytic object of investigation, the compromise-formation, this dissertation suggests that although Freud's defence of Psychoanalysis as a natural science has been legitimately rejected as problematic, the reconstrual of Psychoanalysis as an interpretive or hermeneutic knowledge is likewise inappropriate to the psychoanalytic object. On the basis of the work of Donald Davidson and Arthur Dante, it is argued instead that the nature and status of Psychoanalysis as a knowledge is best understood and assessed in terms of a third alternative provided by the historical epistemology germane to the psychoanalytic object. In this way, the case against Psychoanalysis as a natural science is granted, while psychoanalytic epistemology is nevertheless defended as explanatory rather than interpretive.

Lindsay, Stuart L. "Reading Chernobyl : psychoanalysis, deconstruction, literature". Thesis, University of Stirling, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/21790.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis explores the psychological trauma of the survivors of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, which occurred on April 26, 1986. I argue for the emergence from the disaster of three Chernobyl traumas, each of which will be analysed individually – one per chapter. In reading these three traumas of Chernobyl, the thesis draws upon and situates itself at the interface between two primary theoretical perspectives: Freudian psychoanalysis and the deconstructive approach of Jacques Derrida. The first Chernobyl trauma is engendered by the panicked local response to the consequences of the explosion at Chernobyl Reactor Four by the power plant’s staff, the fire fighters whose job it was to extinguish the initial blaze caused by the blast, the inhabitants of nearby towns and villages, and the soldiers involved in the region’s evacuation and radiation decontamination. Most of these people died from radiation poisoning in the days, weeks, months or years after the disaster’s occurrence. The first chapter explores the usefulness and limits of Freudian psychoanalytic readings of local survivors’ testimonies of the disaster, examining in relation to the Chernobyl event Freud’s practice of locating the authentic primal scene or originary traumatic witnessing experience in his subjects’ pasts, as exemplified by his Wolf Man analysis, detailed in his psychoanalytic study ‘On the History of an Infantile Neurosis’ (1918). The testimonies read through this Freudian psychoanalytic lens are constituted by Igor Kostin’s personal account of the disaster’s aftermath, detailed in his book Chernobyl: Confessions of a Reporter (2006), and by Svetlana Alexievich’s interviews with Chernobyl disaster survivors in her book Voices from Chernobyl: The Oral History of a Nuclear Disaster (2006). The second chapter argues that Freudian psychoanalysis only provides a provisional, ultimately fictional origin of Chernobyl trauma. Situating itself in relation to trauma studies, this thesis, progressing from its first to its second chapter, charts the geographical and temporal shift between these first and second traumas, from trauma-as-sudden-event to trauma-as-gradual-process. In the weeks following the initial Chernobyl explosion, which released into the atmosphere a radioactive cloud that blew in a north-westerly direction across Northern Ukraine, Belarus, Latvia, Estonia, Finland and Sweden, symptoms of radiation poisoning slowly emerged in the populations of the abovementioned countries. To analyse the psychological impact of confronting this gradual, international unfolding of trauma – the second trauma of Chernobyl – the second chapter of this thesis explores the critique of the global attempt to archivise, elegise and ultimately understand the Chernobyl disaster in Mario Petrucci’s elegies, compiled in his poetry collection Heavy Water: A Poem for Chernobyl (2006), the horror film Chernobyl Diaries (2012, dir. Bradley Parker), and Adam Roberts’ Science Fiction novel, Yellow Blue Tibia (2009). Analysing the deconstructive approach of Jacques Derrida in these texts – his notions of archive fever, impossible mourning and ethical mourning – this chapter argues that the attempt to interiorise, memorialise and mourn the survivors of the Chernobyl disaster is narcissistic, hubristic and violent in the extreme. It then proposes that Derrida’s notion of ethical mourning, outlined most clearly in his lecture ‘Mnemosyne’ (1984), enables us to situate our emotional sympathy for survivors – who, following Derrida’s lecture, are maintained as permanently exterior and inaccessible to us – in our very inability or failure to comprehend or locate the origin of their Chernobyl traumas. The third and final chapter analyses the third trauma of Chernobyl: the psychological and physiological effects of the disaster on second-generation inhabitants living near the Exclusion Zone erected around the evacuated, cordoned-off and still-radioactive Chernobyl region. These second-generation experiences of living near a sealed-away source of intense radiation are reconstructed in literature and videogaming: in Darragh McKeon’s novel All That Is Solid Melts Into Air (2014), Hamid Ismailov’s novel The Dead Lake (2014) and the videogame S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of Chernobyl (2007), developed by the company GSC Game World. The analysis of these texts is informed by Nicolas Abraham and Maria Torok’s psychoanalytic theory of the intergenerational phantom: the muteness of a generation’s history which returns to haunt the succeeding generations. This chapter will explore the psychological effects upon second-generation Chernobyl survivors, which result from these survivors’ incorporation or unconscious interiorisation of their parents’ psychologically repressed traumatic Chernobyl experiences, by analysing reconstructions of this process in the abovementioned texts. These parental experiences, echoing the Exclusion Zone as a denied physical space, have been interred in inaccessible psychic crypts. By way of conclusion, the thesis then offers an alternative theory of reading survivors’ Chernobyl trauma. Survivors’ restaging of their Chernobyl witnessing experiences as jokes enables them to cathartically, temporarily abreact their trauma through the laughter that these jokes engender.

Abstract (sommario):
This study approaches the psychoanalysts labour, taking as its apex of investigation the difficulties these professionals are faced with in their daily practice. In this context, changes in the patients profile, the crises of demand due to the varied and expanding competition of psychofarmacotherapy and psychotherapy, relevant requirements in his/her professional formation, the establishment of bonds with other analysts, and the vicissitudes related to quality time can be considered as indicators of the uneasiness the psychoanalyst feels when he/she is involved in the process of psychoanalyzing nowadays. Thus, keeping the goal of delving into the tribulations of the impossible profession so stressed by Freud, this research takes as its methodological guideline a central concept called professional narcissism, conceived from the notion of narcissism suggested by Freud and developed by Lacan. By means of specific pieces, it investigates three authors Freud, Ferenczi and Lacan. In Freud it prioritises the problems related to handling transference and the demands of the analyst himself/herself in his professional practice. As to Ferenczi, it reveals the troubles the psychoanalyst goes through concerning issues such as time and money, especially as to what he reports by means of the correspondence exchanged with Freud. As far as Lacan is concerned, it prioritises testimonies and reports of those he lived close to, pointing at the multiple forms of identification generated and the advent of Lacanism, which has led to the emergence of a new sort of psychoanalyst, one who takes over the mission of defending the true psychoanalysis in the world, by returning to Freud via Lacan. This study problematizes the forms of confrontation of the difficulties mentioned: a possible treatment through personal analysis of the psychoanalysts themselves, the building of new bonds among the field participants, their involvement with reading and careful study of authors inside and outside Psychoanalysis, and with writing here taken as a means of elaboration by the psychoanalyst with regard to the predicaments in his/her practice. The conclusion, thus, is that each psychoanalyst needs to resignify his/her activity, which includes the constant exercise of deidealization of various aspects inherent in the profession, and caution in providing and diffusing psychoanalysis to Culture, besides taking a new stand concerning his/her general and specific formation

Abstract (sommario):
This research focus on the relationship the psychoanalysis establishes with the existing psychoanalytical theories in order to deal with the events of clinical practice. Based on the principle that a psychoanalytical theory stems from the personal analysis of both its creator ant its reader, it is not possible to classify such theories neither under the classical fields of science, nor of hermeneutics. This specifity interferes in the transmission of these theories because it passes through transferences and counter-transferences that the psychoanalyst establishes with his patients, his colleagues, and with the theories themselves. This dissertation is composed of two essays. The first broaches the history of the psychoanalytical movement and the changes observed in psychoanalytical institutions bringing them closer to the roots and more daring aspects of psychoanalytical theory. Some concepts are essential to this essay: transference, the resistance it evokes, and the clinical identity of the psychoanalyst, which results from working with the former two. The second essay is about the fabric of psychoanalytical theory itself and how it is built from metaphors that never quite fully encompass the phenomena of the unconscious. The relationship between theory and practice, both non-dissociable in psychoanalysis, is also present in this text in the form of examples of how the psychoanalyst thinks when theorizing of during clinical practice.

Abstract (sommario):
From the 1970s the emergence of religion and spirituality in psychoanalysis is a unique development, given its traditional pathologizing stance. This research examines how and why ‘sacred psychoanalysis’ came about and whether this represents a new analytic movement with definable features or a diffuse phenomena within psychoanalysis that parallels developments elsewhere. After identifying the research context, a discussion of definitions and qualitative reflexive methodology follows. An account of religious and spiritual engagement in psychoanalysis in the UK and the USA provides a narrative of key people and texts, with a focus on the theoretical foundations established by Winnicott and Bion. This leads to a detailed examination of the literary narratives of religious and spiritual engagement understood from: Christian; Natural; Maternal; Jewish; Buddhist; Hindu; Muslim; Mystical; and Intersubjective perspectives, synthesized into an interpretative framework of sacred psychoanalysis. Qualitative interviews were then undertaken with leading experts focusing on the lived experience of contemporary psychoanalysts. From a larger sample, eleven interviews were selected for a thematic narrative analysis and from within this sample, six interviews were then the focus of a reflexive intersubjective analysis, utilizing psychoanalytic techniques. This research concludes that three forms of sacred psychoanalysis can be identified embracing a generic framework for theoretical and clinical understanding; a framework for intersubjective presence; and a framework for spiritual/sacred encounter.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis looks at 'transcultural' readings of psychoanalysis in Argentina in the period 1964-1985, to show how psychoanalysis was a discourse that could refract and inflect extant problematics to provide new discourses on Argentina and its intellectuals. I look at the ways in which psychoanalysis has interpreted itself and been interpreted - as science, hermeneutic, mode of subjectification - and how it can be seen as also a discourse of self-allegorisation, both communicative and expressive of its own position. I first look at the work of Oscar Masotta and examine his transition from Sartrean literary criticism concerned with commitment and freedom to an exegetical Lacanian psychoanalysis which in its preoccupation with language and transmission discursively performs concerns with coloniality, subalternity and self-authorisation and legitimation. Masotta's Lacanianism unfolds as (and continues his) self-narrative. I then look at the ways in which psychoanalytic motifs and understandings become part of the compositional material of some literary works of the period, (Osvaldo Lamborghini, Luis Gusman, Oscar Steimberg, and Juan Jose Saer) and the ways in which the authors of these fictions assume a 'psychoanalytic competence' as part of their readership.

Ray, Nicholas. "Tragedy and otherness : Sophocles, Shakespeare, psychoanalysis". Thesis, University of Warwick, 2002. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/3052/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The thesis is concerned with the relationship between psychoanalysis and tragedy, and the way in which psychoanalysis has structured its theory by reference to models from tragic drama - in particular, those of Sophocles and Shakespeare. It engages with some of the most recent thinking in contemporary French psychoanalysis, most notably the work of Jean Laplanche, so as to interrogate both Freudian metapsychology and the tragic texts in which it claims to identify its prototypes. Laplanche has ventured an ‘other-centred’ re-reading of the Freudian corpus which seeks to go beyond the tendency of Freud himself, and psychoanalysis more generally, to unify and centralise the human subject in a manner which strays from and occults some of the most radical elements of the psychoanalytic enterprise. The (occulted) specificity of the Freudian discovery, Laplanche proposes, lies in the irreducible otherness of the subject to himself and therefore of the messages by which subjects communicate their desires. I argue that Freud’s recourse to literary models is inextricably bound up with the ‘goings-astray’ in his thinking. Laplanche’s work, I suggest, offers an important perspective from which to consider not only the function which psychoanalysis cells upon them to perform, but also that within them for which Freud and psychoanalysis have remained unable to account. Taking three tragic dramas which, more or less explicitly, have borne a formative impact on Freud’s thought, and which have often been understood to articulate the emergence of ‘the subject’, I attempt to set alongside Freud’s own readings of them, the argument that each figures not the unifying or centralising but the radical decentring of its principal protagonists and their communicative acts. By close textual analyses of these three works, and by reference to their historical and cultural contexts, the crucial Freudian motif of parricide (real or symbolic) which structures and connects them is shown ultimately to be an inescapable and inescapably paradoxical gesture: one of liberty and autonomy at the cost of self-division, and of a dependence at the cost of a certain autonomy.

Worthington, Anne. "Female homosexuality : psychoanalysis and queer theory". Thesis, Middlesex University, 2011. http://eprints.mdx.ac.uk/7222/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
My thesis is that psychoanalytic discourse always characterises homosexual women as masculine. I evidence this through an examination of published psychoanalytic case histories of female homosexuals from 1920 to the present day. Informed by Foucault's genealogical methodology, I propose that this characterisation constitutes an ―unconscious rule‖, which transcends the differences between the various schools of psychoanalysis, and which has remained constant throughout its history and impervious to the challenges and critiques of its theory and practice. Since the late 1980s, the most recent critical engagement with psychoanalysis has come from queer theory. I argue that, despite the apparent promise of this engagement, queer theory, like psychoanalysis, is subjected to the same ―rule‖: lesbians are masculine. Some have claimed that the topic of female homosexuality has been neglected by psychoanalysts. I dispute this idea, and through an examination of published clinical case histories I provide evidence of its sustained engagement with the topic. Feminist commentators have pointed to the elision of the feminine in psychoanalytic discourse. Queer theory has challenged feminism, which, it claims, neglected the specificity of the experience of homosexual women. Again through an examination of published clinical material, I investigate the specificity of female homosexuality as conceptualised by psychoanalytic practitioners. I re-read the debate of 1920s-30s within psychoanalysis, commonly referred to as the debate on feminine sexuality, proposing that it would be more accurate to describe this as a debate on the question of female (homo)sexuality. While it is claimed in the literature that the debate concluded with the outbreak of WW2, my investigation of published case histories demonstrates that this was not the case. My pursuit of the debate through a reading of published case histories follows a particular trajectory of the revisions and departures from Freud, which I characterise as the Anglo-American school. The literature on the topic identifies only one conceptualisation of female homosexuality in Freud's work, informed by Freud's only published case history of a female homosexual (1920). It is my contention that Freud theorized female homosexuality in three ways, all of which represent an Oedipal solution. I examine queer theory's engagement with psychoanalysis and identify two strands to that engagement. Firstly, queer theory restores psychoanalysis as a radical project, which proffers an analysis of sex and sexed subjectivity that is not complementary and biologically explained, and not in the service of (re)production. Secondly, I identify a queer mirroring of psychoanalyses' elision of the specificities of feminine (homo)sexualities, which logically cannot exist within queer discourse. Finally, I examine the effects of queer theory on the psychoanalytic clinic of female homosexuality. Two contradictory effects are proposed. On the one hand, a greater interest in the topic of female homosexuality can be detected, countering what is deemed to be the prevailing pathologising view of psychoanalytic thinking about female homosexuality. On the other, female homosexuality is marginalized, by less privilege being given to the object choice and the unconscious fantasies of the patients discussed by comparison with the work published by Freud and his contemporaries. Nonetheless, although less explicit in some published work, the ―unconscious rule‖ remains in place.

Wolf, Bogdan. "Psychographies : specularity and death in psychoanalysis". Thesis, University of Warwick, 1998. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/37061/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis discusses the relationship between philosophy and psychoanalysis. It takes the work of Freud and Lacan as a primary reference, and implements it in the reading of the texts of Nictzsche, Heidegger and Blanchot among others. The relationship is pursued along the lines of the problems originally posed by the philosophical writers and concerning the theme of subjectivity, idcntification, image fonnation and loss in order to punctuate the difficulties and aporias as articulatcd in and by the psychoanalytical questioning. The discussion aims therefore to demonstrate how the problems raised by philosophy can, but also should, be addressed by the psychoanalytical theory, and to what extent the former mishit, in the very way in which they are raised, by virtue of ignoring the discussion of the "fundamentals" of psychoanalysis, namely the status of the unconscious, the subject and the object in the human discourse. My strategy to address the philosophical readings begins in each part of this work with an analysis of the psychoanal)1ical text followed by the effects and implications, as they are imposed on the reading of philosophy/literature. This lack or insufficiency, as emerging in such an encounter, and operative in such a problematization, is thus given a certain psychographic attention which does not merely represent a psychoanalytical 'viewpoint' but rather involves a shift in the strategy itself. This shift questions the status of the subject in the production of discourse, while deploying the subject as a lack in such a questioning, and its relation to the real (object). It is in accordance with such an approach that I have divided this work into two parts, each attempting to address in the way described above the following issues. On the one hand, the analysis revolves around the problems of narcissism, specularity, image, ego and 'I' formation, and the symptom, and in this respect discusses the texts of Freud, Lacan, Rank and Nietzsche. On the other hand. it touches upon the work of "sad passions" or passions of death as operative in the production of the letter, and apparent in what could be called fictional theorisations in the texts of N. Abraham, Torok, Blanchot and Heidegger. Such tactics, again, take us beyond the meaning caught in the real, towards the way in which the problems of philosophy can be, again, taken up by psychoanalysis. To this extent, the second part has been devoted to the discussion and analysis of melancholia, mourning, loss, voice and guilt.

This study analyzes the contributions of Sigmund Freud, Sándor Ferenczi and Jacques Lacan to the concept of trauma in Psychoanalysis, highlighting the main theoretical frameworks in each approach. The concept of trauma has undergone different changes in the various phases of the theoretical Freudian conception, and its diverse meanings have been discussed since the first seduction theory up to the latest theory of anguish (Freud, 1926 [1925]), as well as in Moses and the monotheism (Freud, 1939 [1934-1938]). In Ferenczi, there are two approaches: in the first one, the traumas are of a structuring nature, which means they are either needed, inevitable or philogenetic; in the second one the traumatic situations put the identification project of the subject at risk. In that last approach, the trauma depends on a failure of the relation between the subject and the other. By valuing the alterity in the constitution of trauma, Ferenczi is faithful to what his clinics has revealed: trauma is basically the result of an action of the other upon the one who has been traumatised. In Lacan, on the other hand, the trauma is understood as the entry of the subject into the symbolic world; it is not an accident in the speaking person s life, but rather it is constitutive of their identity. Therefore, trauma in the present study is examined at the light of the relationship established by Lacan between the notions of trauma and signifier, and it also is permeated by the idea of trauma as an encounter with the Real.

Piotrowska, Agnieszka. "Psychoanalysis and ethics in documentary film". Thesis, Birkbeck (University of London), 2012. http://bbktheses.da.ulcc.ac.uk/46/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Psychoanalysis has been used extensively in film studies from the late 1960s and 1970s onwards. Inspired by Jacques Lacan, the work of Metz and Baudry in France and Mulvey and McCabe in the United Kingdom laid the foundations for film theory that explored the relationship between cinematic systems such as the apparatus and the screen on the one hand and the spectator on the other. The objects of these examinations were exclusively fictional texts. I use psychoanalysis differently through an interrogation of a largely untheorised embodied relationship between the documentary filmmaker and the subject of her or his film from a psychoanalytical perspective. There are many types of documentary film. I focus in this work on films in which a testimony, sometimes dealing with trauma, or an autobiographical account of the other, is gathered by the filmmaker. To this end I work with a number of documentary texts, including my own practice. I look at the potential tensions that these encounters might create between the need to gain as full a disclosure as possible, often fuelled by the filmmaker’s unconscious desire (which may or may not coincide with the consciously stated aim), and the ethical responsibility for the subject of the film. I suggest that a variety of unconscious mechanisms known from clinical psychoanalytical practice might be operating in the process of documentary filmmaking. These unconscious ‘hidden’ factors, notably transference, have a major influence on the decisions made in the creation of the final texts and therefore also have an impact on the future audiences of these films, which is why it is important to bring them to light. The thesis deals also with ethics of the documentary encounter. Apart from mainly Lacanian psychoanalytical thought, I draw on post-Second World War philosophy dealing with the relationship of the ‘I’ to the Other, led by Emmanuel Lévinas, but including Althusser, Badiou, Butler, Derrida and others.

Lykou, Paraskevi. "Autobiographies : psychoanalysis and the graphic novel". Thesis, University of York, 2014. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/6941/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis explores the conjunction of the graphic novel with life-writing using psychoanalytic concepts, primarily Freudian and post-Freudian psychoanalysis, to show how the graphic medium is used to produce a narrative which reconstructs the function of the unconscious through language. The visual language is rich in meaning, with high representational potential which results in a vivid representation of the unconscious, a more or less raw depiction of the function of the psychoanalytic principles. In this project I research how life-writing utilises the unique representational features of the medium to uncover dimensions of the internal-self, the unconscious and the psyche. I use the tools and principles of psychoanalysis as this has been formed from Freud on and through the modern era, to propose that the visual language of the graphic medium renders the unconscious more accessible presenting the unconscious functionality in a uniquely transparent way, so that to some extent we can see parts of the process of the construction of self identity. The key texts comprise a sample of internationally published, contemporary autobiographical and biographical accounts presented in the form of the graphic novel. The major criterion for including each of the novels in my thesis is that they all are, in one way or another, stories of growing up stigmatised by a significant trauma, caused by the immediate familial and/or social environment. Thus they all are examples of individuals incorporating the trauma in order to overcome it, and all are narrations of constructing a personal identity through and because of this procedure. The presentation of the characters’ childhood is a (re)construction of their family history and an emergence of their own sense of the self, as this sense has been defined in the late modernity.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper seeks to analyze the inter-relationship of three theories: feminism, psychoanalysis and postmodernism. It attempts to do this by focussing on the issue of sex crimes; how each theory provides an explanation for the phenomenon of sex crimes. It goes on to examine each theory in more detail, using their position on sex crimes as a starting point to a discussion of their theoretical foundations. It acknowledges the major writers in the field and notices the current trend of analysis to be that of merger between the theories. The paper examines both the feasibility and validity of such a merger.

Miller, Michael. "Transference, hypnosis and the fate of psychoanalysis". Thesis, University of East London, 2001. http://roar.uel.ac.uk/1272/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is an enquiry into the psychoanalytic concept of transference. The `transference' refers to a particular kind of relationship that a patient develops towards his therapist and is found, to a greater or lesser degree, in all psychotherapeutic encounters. Psychoanalysis claims that its understanding and handling of the transference relationship provides an unrivalled access into the unconscious mind. Using an historical approach, I examine the pre-history of psychoanalysis from Mesmer to Freud. I then look at the subsequent development within psychoanalysis up to the present, as represented by the school of psychoanalysis known as Object Relations (OR). What I set out to demonstrate, through a critical examination of the psychoanalytic literature, is that the concept of transference does not achieve the epistemological breakthrough for psychoanalysis that is claimed. Firstly I show that the observation connecting transference with the unconscious is by no means a new idea. This connection had already been noted in relation to the concept of the `rapport' developed by Mesmer and his followers some 150 years prior to the advent of psychoanalysis. Secondly I show that the explanation that psychoanalysis gives in terms of the `unconscious phantasies' said to underlie transference, is mistaken. I show that both the formation of transference in terms of ideas about the therapist, and the psychoanalytic interpretation of these ideas in terms of `unconscious phantasy', in fact deny the real nature of the unconscious. This leads me to the development of my central argument against psychoanalysis. Firstly I argue that the real nature of the unconscious is structured around affectivity not ideas. Secondly, I argue that because psychoanalysis misunderstands the real nature of the unconscious, its therapeutic method offers no significant advantage over hypnosis, out of which it directly developed.

Abstract (sommario):
This study argues for the necessity of a psychoanalytic perspective in the study of colonization, while recognizing the complicity of psychoanalysis in the colonial project. My first chapter situates the Oedipal subject as a historic effect and attempts to trace some of the conditions of its emergence. In this way, I seek to call into question the universal status that Freud attributed to the Oedipal subject. From this historicized perspective, I then read Freud's Totem and Taboo, and its construction of the 'savage', as an effect of displacement, and in so doing, suggest a relation between the Oedipalized subject and the colonizing subject. The following three chapters are comprised of detailed readings of specific events and texts in Australian cultural history. All of these chapters focus on Aboriginal writers, and argue that the texts they have produced can be read as challenging, in a variety of ways, the naturalized construction of the patriarchal nuclear family in the colonial context, and the Oedipalized subject that supports it. The first of these contextualizes the life and work of David Ilnaipon, and argues for a more positive reassessmenot f his work that takes into consideration modes of Oedipalized subjectification operative in the colonial domain. The following chapter focuses on Sally Morgan's My Place, Australia's best-selling, Aboriginal autobiography, and suggests that its overwhelming popularity masks profound anxieties about the intimate and sexualized nature of colonial exploitation as manifest in the settler family home. The final chapter considers recent allegations that Mudrooroo, Australia's most wellknown and prolific Aboriginal writer, is actually an African American. This chapter suggests that a re-reading of his novels, Master of the Ghost Dreaming and Doctor Wooreddy's Prescription for Enduring the Ending of the World, provide possible ways of rethinking simplistic notions of identity and theirgrounding in Oedipalized identifications. All three textual events act as imperatives to remember the legacy of colonialism that continues to pervade contemporary Australian culture.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis reads Elizabeth Bishop and Sylvia Plath for their poetic engagement psychoanalysis. This reading nuances their relation to confessional poetry. By 'confessional' I mean the term first used to describe Robert Lowell's 'Life Studies' (1959), and later to describe the poets that were influenced by him. My main intervention is that what makes Bishop and Plath's poetry appear confessional owes to their engagement with psychoanalysis. Confessional poetry provokes psychoanalytic interpretation, but these two poets are not the passive object of psychoanalytic interpretation. Instead they used poetic form to motivate a transference with psychoanalysis. Plath and Bishop's poetry often diverges from or produces a critique of psychoanalysis where it is most compromising for women. I focus on Freud and Lacan as two of the most difficult yet influential figures in the relationship between psychoanalysis and feminism. Plath's poetry is not pathological and inevitably suicidal, and Bishop develops a more problematic relationship with the other than is sometimes suggested. Both poets also give form to a maternal relation of the kind that Freud and Lacan's work suppresses. The confessional poem is also read as a formation of the ego. Although Bishop is not normally included under the term confessional poetry, she influenced Lowell, and when the confessional poem is read as an ego, rather than centred on the 'I', her writing can be seen to share some of the most essential features of confessional poetry. The main difference is her use of secretive tactics very different from the deliberate self-centredness of confessional poetry proper. Whereas the archconfessional Plath made the 'I' the centre of her poetry and her gender overt, Bishop hid both of these behind various surfaces. The parallels I draw between these two poets reveal the different ways that as writers they brought women's writing and feminine subjectivity on the literary scene.

Osserman, Jordan Harold. "On the foreskin question : circumcision and psychoanalysis". Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2018. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10041872/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Male circumcision is a potent receptacle for fantasy. Whatever its medical benefits or harms, the significance of the practice has always extended to questions beyond the purely organic. By placing specific moments in the history of circumcision into dialogue with psychoanalytic theory, this dissertation demonstrates how circumcision is an inherently ambivalent procedure that enables multitudinous and contradictory responses to the constitutive encounter with lack to be played out on the site of the penis. Through circumcision – whether actual or spectral – the penis is put into relation with the symbolic phallus, allowing the organ to function as an image upon which fundamental questions of subjectivity may be posed. The dissertation begins with an introduction to the relevant psychoanalytic theory on castration, sexual difference, and the phallus, and then examines the extant historical, critical, and psychoanalytic literature relating to circumcision. Subsequently, three case studies are explored, over the course of four chapters: First, St. Paul’s abrogation of Jewish circumcision and its undertheorized role in debates surrounding “Pauline” universalism, considered from the divergent perspectives of Alain Badiou and Daniel Boyarin. Second, the nineteenth-century Anglo-American medicalization of circumcision (promoted as a cure for nervous illness), and the relationship between the “talking cure” and the “circumcision cure.” Finally, the libidinal undertones of contemporary political discourse, activism, and popular sentiment on circumcision. In each case, stances and controversies surrounding circumcision reveal a preoccupation with the question of phallic mastery in the face of lack. Circumcision figures either as an attempt to consolidate mastery – denying or repudiating castration – that at the same time reveals the inherent impossibility of such an enterprise, or, it foregrounds castration, often provoking defensive responses.
