Abstract (sommario):
Project CLIMB (Creating Links in Math and Business) is a teacherdeveloped project that was designed to help answer the students' question, When are we ever going to use this? The project allows precalculus students to communicate with people in the business world by using e-mail. Students are put into groups of three or four and assigned a business contact. The students determine from this contact person exactly what the company does, how teams are used in the company, and how specific mathematics topics are used by the contact person on the job. The student project includes six e-mail requests for information during a semester. The information requested centers on the precalculus topics of matrices, statistics, linear programming, logarithms, trigonometry, and probability. These broad topics are used by people in a variety of fields. The business contact uses e-mail to respond.

Abstract (sommario):
The SimCalc Project, partially supported for almost ten years by the National Science Foundation, is a research project involving colleagues from several universities, many middle schools, and high schools. Its goal is to use innovative but affordable technology and instructional materials to democratize access to the mathematics of change and variation. It includes, for example, ideas underlying calculus, beginning in the middle school through algebra and onward into university calculus. SimCalc approaches involve a growing mix of visually editable graphs that control dynamic simulations, visualization and data-import tools, and curriculum materials that use these software capabilities, as well as such traditional ones as function graphers. These strategies address the basic ideas of rate, slope as rate, linear functions, simultaneous conditions, interpreting graphs and modeling word problems (including more realistic ones than those that appear in most textbooks), the idea of average, mixture problems, equations, signed numbers and areas, variables and variation, and so on. They also include such ideas as periodicity, velocity and position, and rate and totals connections, including the slope and area ideas underlying the fundamental theorem of calculus.

Adams, Brent Michael, e Thi Bich Van Tran. "Project Manager Competencies in managing International Development Projects : The Project Managers' Perspective". Thesis, Umeå universitet, Företagsekonomi, 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-130986.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This research studies the competencies of International Development (ID) project managers from their perspectives, taking into consideration the contextual factors and the challenges that they face when managing ID projects. The study adopts a constructionist ontological viewpoint and an interpretivist epistemological philosophical assumption. The nature of the research is exploratory with an inductive approach, using qualitative research method. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews with experienced project managers in International Development projects. Template analysis strategy was used to analyse the data. The findings show that contextual factors have a significant influence on the challenges that ID project managers face when managing projects. Contextual factors are operating environment, large network of stakeholders and intangible goals of ID projects. Five challenges were identified as the results of the context, namely stakeholder management challenge, beneficiary needs analysis challenge, the challenge of balancing strategic and operational views, capacity building and training challenge and sustainable funding challenge. To overcome these challenges, seven ID project manager competencies were identified management skills, personal qualities, interpersonal skills, stakeholder engagement skills, capacity building skills, and change management skills. These competencies are found to be interrelated and complementary. While the role and responsibilities of ID project managers were also uncovered during the research, the findings on contextual factors, challenges and competencies help to better understand the ID project manager role and responsibilities. This study makes the contributions from both theoretical and practical point of view. With regards to theoretical contribution, our findings expanded on ID project manager competencies as well as relating them to the context and challenges in ID projects. The role and responsibilities of ID project manager is another theoretical contribution in this study. From a practical point of view, this thesis’s findings would be useful for various organizations who deliver ID projects, particularly human resources management. In addition, it can act as knowledge sharing with ID project managers and help in designing and enhancing educational programmes in ID project management. Overall, this could result in better delivery and overcoming the challenges of International Development projects.

Abstract (sommario):
Construction project failures are often attributed to the slackness of different project stakeholders. However, it is important to note that the success or failure of construction projects can span from characteristics that could either be internal or external to the project. Avoiding project failures that could lead to premature project closure is pertinent in all projects. Every project’s goal is to fulfil its objectives and ultimately reach a successful ending. Therefore, it is imperative to explore the measures that secure project goals and, by extension, lead to success in projects. Thus, this study explores the success factors of construction projects and how failure can be avoided. Data for the study was gathered through a survey of construction professionals in South Africa. The questionnaire survey was designed to collect data pertinent to achieving the aim of the study. The data gathered was analysed using descriptive analysis to rank the measured factors. The results revealed that effectively planning for and managing all the resources needed for a project are the important elements that should be considered for guarding against premature closure of construction projects. Resources encompassing human resources, material resources, machinery resources must be properly and adequately provided for projects to reduce the probability of project flow interruption, thus reducing the risk of closing projects prematurely.

Abstract (sommario):
Project Sustainable Economy is a unique project approach to business that balances and solves the project’s environmental, social, and economic aspects with the primary objective of effectively addressing the current requirements of stakeholders, according to the authors from two Project Management Institute definitions. For all projects aimed at business growth, development and sustainability, the quality of teams is crucial. This research aims to investigate the factors within project teams that have an impact on the success of sustainable business projects. The research identifies success-contributing factors in the Project Sustainable Economy, such as decision time, team dynamics, acceptance of proposed methods, a defined plan, quality of relationships, successful project managers, and constructive conflict resolution. The paper’s substantive contribution lies in empirical research conducted on a sample of 102 project team members. The findings underscore that enhanced communication and interpersonal relationships among team members emerge as pivotal factors fostering success within the ambit of the sustainable economy project.

Abstract (sommario):
Project Management has had an increasingly important role in industrial organization, new product development and innovation theories over the last few decades. The majority of the current project management research and literature are focused on the post contract award phase as well as the skills and know-how of the project manager. Empirical research shows that, despite strict adherence to the best management norms and best practices, many projects still fail to achieve their objectives while others are aborted before they are completed. The authors argue that this project failute is due to the lack of an analytical and systematic process of designing the project prior to its award and that this phase of Project Design plays a major role in predetermining the project’s outcome. The following paper is a research proposal for presenting the literature review, theoretical basis and empirical evidence of the need for a theoretical framework for designing projects. This framework will encompass a dynamic model for the interactions between the various project success factors across different project categories.

Abstract (sommario):
This report is one of a series of reports documenting the methods and findings of a multi-year, multi-disciplinary project coordinated by the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center (PEER) and funded by the California Earthquake Authority (CEA). The overall project is titled “Quantifying the Performance of Retrofit of Cripple Walls and Sill Anchorage in Single-Family Wood-Frame Buildings,” henceforth referred to as the “PEER-CEA Project.” The overall objective of the PEER–CEA project is to provide scientifically based information (e.g., testing, analysis, and resulting loss models) that measure and assess the effectiveness of seismic retrofit to reduce the risk of damage and associated losses (repair costs) of wood-frame houses with cripple wall and sill anchorage deficiencies as well as retrofitted conditions that address those deficiencies. Tasks that support and inform the loss-modeling effort are: (1) collecting and summarizing existing information and results of previous research on the performance of wood-frame houses; (2) identifying construction features to characterize alternative variants of wood-frame houses; (3) characterizing earthquake hazard and ground motions at representative sites in California; (4) developing cyclic loading protocols and conducting laboratory tests of cripple wall panels, wood-frame wall subassemblies, and sill anchorages to measure and document their response (strength and stiffness) under cyclic loading; and (5) the computer modeling, simulations, and the development of loss models as informed by a workshop with claims adjustors. This report is a product of Working Group 7: Reporting and is a summary of the PEER–CEA Project work performed by Working Groups 1–6. This report does not present new information apart from the rest of the project, and its purpose is to serve as a reference for researchers and catastrophe modelers wishing to understand the objectives and key findings of the project. The key overall findings of the PEER–CEA Project are summarized in Chapters 8 and 10, which describe the efforts of the WG5 and WG6 Working Groups. The reader is referred to the individual reports prepared by the Working Groups for comprehensive information on the tasks, methodologies, and results of each.
