Abstract (sommario):
In June 2016, the Norwegian Programme for Capacity Development in Higher Education and Research for Development (Norhed) hosted a conference on the theme of 'knowledge for development'in an attempt to shift the focus of the programme towards its academic content. This book follows up on that event. The conference highlighted the usefulness of presenting the value of Norhed's different projects to the world, showing how they improve knowledge and expand access to it through co-operation. A wish for more meta-knowledge was also expressed and this gives rise to the following questions: Is this way of co-operating contributing to the growth of independent post-colonial knowledge production in the South, based on analyses of local data and experiences in ways that are relevant to our shared future? Does the growth of academic independence, as well as greater equality, and the ability to develop theories different to those imposed by the better-off parts of the world, give rise to deeper understandings and better explanations? Does it, at least, spread the ability to translate existing methodologies in ways that add meaning to observations of local context and data, and thus enhance the relevance and influence of the academic profession locally and internationally? This book, in its varied contributions, does not provide definite answers to these questions but it does show that Norhed is a step in the right direction. Norhed is an attempt to fund collaboration within and between higher education institutions. We know that both the uniqueness of this programme, and ideas of how to better utilise the learning and experience emerging from it, call for more elaboration and broader dissemination before we can offer further guidance on how to do things better. This book is a first attempt.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter introduces some basic frameworks for securing the government take, that is, how to decide between different ownership, royalties, and tax systems. It begins with an overview of various contract types and fiscal regimes, before focusing on the particulars of the Norwegian framework. Subjects covered include the nature of different contracting arrangements (joint ventures, production sharing contracts (PSCs), service contracts, the principle of carrying, and so on), and the diverse fiscal instruments used to maximize the government’s share of the revenues (national oil company, taxes, royalties, fees, and so on). The latter part of the chapter describes how the Norwegian concessions framework has changed over time, from supporting nascent interests and attracting international oil companies to providing a more level and competitive playing field for all offshore actors.

Abstract (sommario):
The making, eating, and sharing of food throughout society represents an important and exciting area of study with the potential to advance the field of scholarship, particularly in the context of Scandinavian Studies. This book analyses the historical, legal, and literary sources of the region during the medieval period to explore different aspects of Scandinavian culture relating to food and drink: production, consumption (including feasts), trading (distribution), and the associated social rituals. Using new and innovative approaches, this collection of studies offers broad insights into a great variety of social practices and includes fresh information on not only social history but also traditional topics such as trade, commercial exchange, legal regulation, and political organisation. The book unites contributors from a variety of backgrounds, further enriching the content of a collection that promises to make a significant contribution to the state of current research.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter analyzes the political economy of digital critical editions and the development of research networks, as well as the ecological environment and the concrete human resources in digital critical edition. The first part builds on the scope of scholarly editing's “political economy in a pre-digital era,” and describes the human resources context that has followed the migration of critical edition to the digital world. Meanwhile, the second part discusses the impacts of collaborative work, human networks, open software ideology, and resource sharing on the new political economy of digital scholarly edition. Particular attention is given to the role of institutions such as publishers, research organizations and universities, and scientific networks in this new production environment.

Urban, Greg. Cultural Replication. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780190652807.003.0002.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The (re)-production of an element or aspect of culture, here dubbed cultural “replication,” typically involves two distinguishable facets: copying and response. These two facets stimulate contrasting anthropological understandings of culture. Focusing on copying, older models look at culture through the lens of acquisition, viewing individuals within the group as sharing the same culture. The result is a monological understanding of culture; there is uniformity within the group, with group culture passed down across the generations. Newer models, in contrast, emphasize Bakhtinian dialogism, with culture construed as something to which people respond; these models, hence, emphasize difference. Additionally, it is not just anthropologists who develop monological and dialogical models of culture. This chapter argues that people generally, in their efforts to produce community or society, have recourse to metacultural models based on copying or on response. Those models in turn play an active role in promoting either uniformity or difference at the cultural plane.

Young, Karen, e Katherine Wolff, a cura di. Energy Transitions in the Middle East. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9780755650644.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
How do Middle East energy transitions fit into international energy markets? In this book, energy analysts, geopolitical experts and specialists of political economy examine the new energy potential in the Middle East. The particular focus surrounds how the region’s access to finance, combined with the new global regulations and considerations of economic development, shape the region’s energy transitions overall. The Middle East is revealed to be a key site of new energy production, sharing and transmission as well as technology innovation. At the same time, the authors examine the variables that determine the success in each country and energy source, including the advantages that hydrocarbon producers will have in renewables and transition fuels, and the risk that these might slow down the energy transition overall. In doing so, the book situates the energy transition in the Middle East in a broader context of economic development, financing models, and regulations, and explains how this context interacts with the development of new energy sources. Energy Transitions in the Middle East is an account of the challenges Middle Eastern states will face in navigating the global energy transition, as well as their key areas of opportunity.

Abstract (sommario):
Ethnomusicologists face complex and challenging professional landscapes. Graduate studies in our field do not fully equip ethnomusicologists for work outside of academia. The essays in Voices of the Field: Pathways in Public Ethnomusicology, edited by León F. García Corona and Kathleen Wiens, provide a reflection on the challenges, opportunities, and often overlooked importance of public ethnomusicology. The essays in the book, commissioned for the volume, capture years of experiences of fourteen academics who have simultaneously navigated the academic world and the world outside academia, sharing lifelong lessons often missing in ethnomusicological training. Power and organizational structures, revenue, marketing, decision-making, content management, and production are among the themes explored as an extension and re-evaluation of what constitutes the field of ethnomusicology. The authors share their personal and professional pathways, which often converge throughout their lifelong careers as public ethnomusicologists. Many of the authors share how to successfully acquire funding for a project, others show how to navigate nonacademic workplaces, and yet others share perspectives on reconciling business-like mindsets with humanistic goals. Grounded in case studies in multiple institutional and geographical locations, authors advocate for the importance and relevance of ethnomusicology in our society at large. While providing practical resources, this volume also sheds light into the blind spots of current academic ethnomusicology programs. Voices of the Field: Pathways in Public Ethnomusicology is a foundational current and retrospective approach to the study and sustainable practice of ethnomusicology.
