Abstract (sommario):
Comic books are becoming increasingly popular in the field of education. In the past, comic books were excluded from school libraries and classrooms. However, with the resurgence in the popularity of comic books and students’ increased demands for them, they are now considered as recreational reading with educational value. In response to this, school libraries have begun collecting comic books and including them as part of their regular collections. This research paper reflects on the current situation of comic books in primary and middle school library collections and examines school librarians’ perceptions towards educational values of comics. The investigation was launched in Hong Kong, Taiwan, New Zealand, Australia and Japan – making comparisons amongst different levels (primary school and secondary school), and different types (public school and private school) of schools in five different countries. Questionnaire surveys were sent to selected school librarians and were the main method of data collection. A total number of 683 responses were collected for this study. Research results include librarians’ attitudes towards comic books in school libraries, adolescent readers’ use of school libraries, their reading and borrowing practices, as well as other problems encountered with the on-going maintenance of comic books as part of the school libraries’ regular collections.

Abstract (sommario):
The article considers the role of merchant libraries in the history of the city. The reviewed books open a new publishing series of the scientific library of Irkutsk University, dedicated to merchant libraries of Irkutsk. Its publications provide an opportunity to get familiar with the old book collections of Irkutsk residents, know more about the interest in books and reading in our city as well as the history of private libraries. The first book in the series, published in 2019, was dedicated to the book collection of the largest Irkutsk merchant, the philanthropist and bibliophile V.N. Basnin, whose estate was one of the largest cultural salons in Irkutsk in the first half of the 19th century. The book under review contains the most complete catalog of Basnin’s library, which he had been collecting for more than 40 years. It should be noted that he was not only a reader, but also quite a professional bibliographer, ordered by mail novelty books, making their systematization and description. The second book in the series is dedicated to other merchant libraries. Its compilers have done a lot of research work to find these publications, systematize them and identify their owners. The catalog presented by the Irkutsk State University library most fully reflects the merchants’ interest in printed publications. It includes 969 book titles, reflecting 1 194 editions with exlibrises, autographs and notes of their owners. Despite the purely bibliographic nature of the peer-reviewed publications, which are considered in the research, they are of interest to different groups of people. The author notes the importance of the books not only to library workers, but also to all the readers who are not indifferent to the history of cultural life in Irkutsk, as well as to the role of books and home libraries in personality development and formation of human abilities.

Abstract (sommario):
The author describes in detail the first years of the main scientific library in Smolensk Guberniya in the early 20-th century, namely Smolensk State University Library. The author was motivated by the absence of the complete picture of academic librarianship in the region; the issue is also insufficiently covered in the literature. The author applies the methods of comparative analysis and synthesis. The research is based on published and unpublished materials: documents in the State Archive of Smolensk Region; Rare Collection of Smolensk University Library; and scholarly papers. The author writes about the librarians who worked for the Library in 1918–1922, and its first director, privat-dozent I. E. Egorov. She also analyzes the history of the book collection development during the campaign of 1918–1921 in Smolensk Guberniya when the landed property and many manorial libraries were nationalized. She describes nationalized private collections in the Rare Collection of Smolensk University Library, and individual books from academic, public, scientific, estate, commercial, departmental, military and confessional libraries of prerevolutionary Smolensk. The role of Smolensk University Library as the richest book depository of the region and the value of its rare collections are emphasized. The vectors of the academic library activities of the above are explored. The research findings will contribute to the discipline “Library history” studied in the library higher schools and will be useful for modern academic libraries.

Abstract (sommario):
The National Trust’s many historic buildings range from country houses to vernacular architecture, industrial archaeology and literary shrines. More than 150 of these properties contain books, for the most part the historic collections of their original owners. Though, in common with other heritage bodies, the Trust has been rather slow to realise the importance of its books, these libraries together represent something equivalent to the rare books collection of a national library. They are an incomparable though extremely fragile resource for the history of private book ownership, besides containing many rare books, and others of great beauty and interest.

Abstract (sommario):
The National Library of Ireland (NLI) became a legal deposit library in 1927, joining Trinity College which had been, since 1801, subject to British legal-deposit legislation. These two institutions were to form the backbone of the country’s large-scale collection and preservation of written heritage during the twentieth century. In augmenting their collections during this time, they faced similar challenges of space and finance, while also benefitting from the dispersal of major private libraries of big houses in the post-civil war era. This article examines the acquisitions policies of these two libraries in the context of broader trends in the rare book trade. It considers the shifting sands of public and university budgets for library-building during the latter half of the twentieth century and examines where books and archives of Irish interest were bought and sold. In particular, it addresses the impact of the growth of US universities and specialist libraries on the market for Irish material from the 1960s onwards. Responding to this increased competition, the Irish institutions managed their collections and acquisitions in new ways, often at increased cost and using selective buying practices. Drawing on catalogues of sales, auctions and library records, this article offers a broad appreciation of the literary-institutional landscape in a period of vast change in Ireland.

Abstract (sommario):
We actualize the problem of studying private book collections of the estate libraries of the Tambov Governorate of the late 18th - early of the 20th centuries as a cultural environment elements. In the context of the special value of the Russia’s possessory libraries, the novelty of the work is determined by a comprehensive study of pre-revolutionary, Soviet and contemporary historiography. Interest in the book collections of the Tambov Governorate noble libraries is due to their importance as the book culture monuments of the 18th-19th centuries, their importance for verifying the private manors history. We show that among the works of pre-revolutionary historiography the history of personal libraries was considered a specific problem. Authors of that time were interested in questions of the book trade, the organization of free typographies, the largest libraries history. As part of the literature of this period analysis, we consider the works of N.A. Rubakin, I.I. Dubasov, K. Bogoyavlensky, I. Dobrotvorsky, G. Speransky, O.S. Lavrov, V. Simonov. Consideration by Soviet historiography the problem of private libraries formation made it possible to reveal the dominance of ideological attitudes in the cultural life assessments of the Russian province. We study the works of P.N. Chermensky, M. Belokrys, A.S. Chernov, N.I. Romakh. We reveal the contribution of Soviet authors to the study of the private libraries activities, the private collections reconstruction, the problems of reading culture of individual owners. Consideration of the contemporary period works is based on the latest results analysis of the identification of book monuments. We analyze the work of the Tambov Regional Universal Scientific Library named after A.S. Pushkin staff, who studies the works collection of L.A. Voeikov, G.R. Derzhavin, A.D. Khvoshchinsky and A.N. Nortsov.

Abstract (sommario):
The problem of studying private book collections of the Siberian peoples is the most urgent in understanding the cultural diversity of Russia. In this context, the book culture of East Siberia Buddhists is of interest. The article objective is to analyze the book repertoire of Buddhists private libraries. Analysis of this repertoire allows us to reconstruct not only its structure but the level of book culture among local Buddhists in the XIX-XX centuries as well. The material for reconstruction is a collection of small-format Tibetan-language publications (SFTP) from the collections of the Center for Oriental Manuscripts and Xylographs of the Institute of Mongolian, Buddhist and Tibetan Studies of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. This collection is an aggregation of numerous private libraries (PLs), widely distributed among the Buddhists of Transbaikalia and Prebaikalia. Books from the PLs are related to different areas of Buddhist knowledge: religious doctrine, philosophy, philology, astrology, medicine. The largest fields are religious doctrine and philosophy. The research results show that due to the texts of «Diamond Sutra» and Pramanavartika, it is possible to reconstruct not only the repertoire of Buddhists PLs in East Siberia, but elements of everyday Buddhist culture. In this culture, religious-doctrinal texts were involved in the daily ritual activity of laypersons, and philosophical texts in the system of monastic education. The texts ratio of Pramanavartika (5 copies) and «Diamond Sutra» (48 copies) available in SFTP is about 10%. This parameter can indicate both the approximate correlation of religious-doctrinal books to philosophical ones in this collection, and the real ratio of monks and laity number in the pre-revolutionary period in Buryatia. Thus, it can be argued that the «pocket» religious and philosophical libraries of Buddhists (each bundle of the studies collection) is the most interesting source of various scientific information on the book realities of Buddhist culture in East Siberia.

Abstract (sommario):
The organization and existence of manor libraries in pre-revolutionary Russia as a condition for the transmission and dissemination of the culture of reading among the nobility remains an important issue of study and thus remains relevant at the present time. The pre-revolutionary historiography of the book collecting of estate owners, dedicated to estate libraries, both at the all-Russian and at the regional level, is considered. The features of the formation and development of book collections are characterized, the problems of studying the circle of reading of the nobles are indicated. The aspects of the influence of the socio-political situation on the study of book collections, which were most affected in the 20–60s of 20th century are indicated. The modern stage of development of the historiography of the noble manor libraries of the Central Black Earth Region, including the distribution of foreign book collections in them, is analyzed. The applied analytical and interpretive method made it possible to “inscribe” the personal libraries (or their fragments) of the region into the general panorama of scientific ideas about the phenomenon of a personal library. The structural-component method made it possible to present the owners’ meetings as a complex communication system, the basis of which was the “book-reader” relationship. An analysis of the historiography of the problem shows a variety of research approaches to the characteristics of private collections, a wide variety of author’s interpretations of the history of the formation of individual libraries of the nobility.

Abstract (sommario):
Using evidence drawn from S. de Ricci and W. J. Wilson’s Census of Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts in the United States and Canada, American auction records, private library catalogues, public exhibition catalogues, and manuscript fragments surviving in American institutional libraries, this article documents nineteenth-century collections of medieval and Renaissance manuscript fragments in North America before ca. 1900. Surprisingly few fragments can be identified, and most of the private collections have disappeared. The manuscript constituents are found in multiple private libraries, two universities (New York University and Cornell University), and one Learned Society (Massachusetts Historical Society). The fragment collections reflect the collecting genres documented in England in the same period, including albums of discrete fragments, grangerized books, and individual miniatures or “cuttings” (sometimes framed). A distinction is drawn between undecorated text fragments and illuminated ones, explained by aesthetic and scholarly collecting motivations. An interest in text fragments, often from binding waste, can be documented from the 1880s.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Recent research has shown that book collecting by private individuals and institutions was a widespread phenomenon in Bilād al-Shām. At least from the Ayyubid period onwards, countless volumes were produced, changed hands in the book market, and lay around in libraries. To this day, Damascus occupies a central position in our knowledge about libraries and book culture in general, while other cities and regions lag behind. In this article, the inventory of an Aleppine book collector is used to take a glimpse at the book culture of Aleppo in the first decades of the seventeenth century. Although most probably not reflecting the sum total of his library, the inventory still allows to ascertain the specific taste of its compiler, an otherwise unknown Aleppine bibliophile. The inventory also provides evidence for the early distribution of Arabic print and pushes the door open for investigating the role of local agents in the early days of attempts by Orientalists to acquire Arabic manuscripts for European libraries.

Abstract (sommario):
Ukrainians are the eleventh largest ethnic group in Canada. Ukrainian books are important for the development of the Ukrainian diaspora, as well as for preserving and advancing the Ukrainian national culture, traditions, and language in Canada. The article analyzes the research of local and foreign scientists on this topic and provides insights into the presence of the Western Ukrainian books in Canadian libraries and in Canadian public and governmental institutions. The article investigates the details of the creation of the libraries where the researched publications are stored. The author has classified Canadian book collections that hold Ukrainian publications: scientific libraries at universities and other higher education institutions; archival institutions; Ukrainian community organizations; religious institutions; public libraries with Ukrainian collections; private Ukrainian libraries. This paper highlights the role of prominent figures of the Ukrainian diaspora in stocking Canadian libraries with Ukrainian books. We have examined how Western Ukrainian books of 1914–1939 made their way to Canadian libraries. An analysis of the catalogues of the Ukrainian bookstores in Canada has been conducted. Rare copies of these catalogues are in the holdings of the Vasyl Stefanyk National Scientific Library of Ukraine in Lviv. The article highlights the role of the Internet sources in determining the availability of Western Ukrainian books in Canadian libraries. Most of these libraries have online catalogues. The prospects of using electronic library resources and digital editions to conduct research in the field of Ukrainian book bibliography are outlined. The presence of the Ukrainian books of 1914–1939 in Canadian libraries is recorded in the bibliographic index «Ukrainian book in Galicia, Bukovina, Transcarpathia, Volyn and in emigration, 1914–1939» compiled by the scientific bibliography researchers of the Vasyl Stefanyk National Scientific Library of Ukraine in Lviv. Some of the Ukrainian books of 1919–1934 held in Canadian libraries and mentioned in the bibliographic index are the only copies of these books available worldwide. This article is about the "book salvage operation" conducted by the Jewish National and University Library, which added tens of thousands of privately owned Palestinian books to its collections. Based on primary archival documents and interviews, the article describes the beginnings and progress of the operation as well as the changing fortunes of the books themselves at the National Library. The author concludes with an exploration of the operation's dialectical nature (salvage and plunder), the ambivalence of those involved, and an assessment of the final outcome.

Vasyl Stefanyk National Scientific Library of Ukraine in Lviv (VSNSL of Ukraine in Lviv) is considered as an inheritor and successor for major Ukrainian libraries and institutions that constituted its base consequently to geopolitical upheavals of first half of 20th century. These are books, manuscripts, old prints, periodicals, notes and fine arts collections etc. from the libraries of Shevchenko Scientific Society, People’s Home in Lviv, monasteries, private collections, as well as Studion’s Library collection, whose substantial part now is being dispersed along the shelves of VSNSL of Ukraine in Lviv. The author defined the role of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytskyi and Klymentii Sheptytskyi in establishing and maintaining this biggest specialized scientific library in Galicia at that time. The paper describes the rise and evolution of the Studion’s Library collection drawing on archival documents and revealing main stages of its formation, outlines objectives that Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytskyi determined for it and highlighted Metropolitan’s activity in church and social fields resulted in formation of national and cultural institutions. The author also defined the outstanding role of Studion’s in the religious life of Ukrainians. The Studion’s Library collection was officially integrated into Lviv Branch of the Library of the Academy of Sciences of USSR on February 12, 1940. So the dispersion of the once rich collection started. Now those books and periodicals are parts of Rare Book Department, Manuscript Department, Ucrainica Department, Exchange and Reserve Department, Department of European book of 19th–20th cc. and others. These collections were repeatedly examined within several bibliological studies conducted by the Library’s researchers. Thus, it is marked that unique collections of Studion’s like other historical libraries at VSNSL of Ukraine in Lviv need writing their history as well as their bibliographical reconstruction what is now composing one of main objectives of Library’s staff Keywords: Vasyl Stefanyk National Scientific Library of Ukraine in Lviv, Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytskyi, Klymentii Sheptytskyi, the Studion’s Library collection, Byzantine Library.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract This article focusses on the distribution of Sino-European books in the broad scholarly world: how did these books that are intercultural regarding authorship, content, and material aspect, reach their potential readers? And how widely were these books distributed? It investigates the extent to which these books were included in private libraries from the late Ming until the mid-Qing (1582–c.1823). Book printing had become very efficient in the second half of the sixteenth century and collecting books, both in printed and manuscript form, had become one of the favourite hobbies of (retired) scholars. Some of them accumulated very large libraries, and the catalogues of a few of these have been preserved. Thirty-seven of the still extant catalogues of these libraries contain references to Sino-European books. These references provide the opportunity to investigate the distribution of such intercultural texts over a span of two hundred and fifty years. This article begins with a general presentation of these catalogues. Subsequently, individual catalogues are described in chronological order. When possible, a description is included of the collector’s link with European missionaries or Chinese Christians, as it is through these connections that the intercultural encounters around these texts took place. Next, by tracing the frequency of appearance of the works, this article explores what the extant catalogues can tell us about the distribution of Sino-European books. Finally, the focus moves to the ways the collectors classified these works in their catalogues. By investigating the bibliographic categories, this analysis reveals the intercultural negotiations that took place in the creation of the Sino-European book world.

Abstract (sommario):
The Biblioteca degli Uffizi acts as a documentary ‘black box’ for all the notable collecting that has taken place in Florence during the past 500 years. The Library’s collections stretch from the autograph 22-year diary of the 15th-century painter Neri di Bicci and the different editions of Vasari’s Lives of the painters, through the inventories and lists of objects acquired and held successively by the Medici, the House of Hapsburg-Lorraine and the new Italian united kingdom, and to all the memoirs and plans and catalogues of the directors and ‘royal antiquarians’ of the Uffizi Gallery. In addition it contains major works on art history, artists, public and private art collections, exhibitions and many related topics. The Library holds 77,000 printed books and more than 440 manuscripts; its catalogue is shared with the IRIS consortium of art history and humanities libraries and contributes to artlibraries.net through this shared bibliographic database. Several digitisation projects have already been completed or are currently in progress.

‘Nieuwe Kunst’ is the Dutch variant of what is known as Art Nouveau or Jugendstil in other parts of Europe. As far as book art is concerned, the highlight of this style was between 1892 and 1903. When interest in Art Nouveau began to flourish again in the 1960s, private individuals and libraries in the Netherlands started to collect Nieuwe Kunst books; these collections reflect a varied production, in form as well as in content.

Abstract (sommario):
We possess a good deal of information in our sources about Fatimid royal libraries and about book collections, both those belonging to the imam-caliph and some in private hands. The earliest evidence goes back to the beginning phase of this dynasty but it also continues throughout. Even viewing the available data with skepticism, the caliph’s library must have been immense. One semi-public institution, the Dar al-ʿIlm, begun by al-Hakim, was designed to foster book copying and it had its own library as well. Strictly within the daʿwa, some evidence indicates a kind of curriculum: books and treatises that an authority indicates should be studied prior to reading those more advanced. Most were, however, carefully restricted to the faithful. But some others were not and were designed specifically for public consumption. We also have a royal decree in favor of a famous scholar that specifies how he is to produce books, both to add to the library and to enhance the honor of the Fatimid state.

Abstract (sommario):
We analyze ex-libris of Tambov owners of the second half of the 19th – early 20th centuries. The relevance of the research is due to the need to fill the historiographic gap in the study of private libraries of the pre-revolutionary Tambov region. The main source for the work is the collection of civil press books, stored in the Tambov Regional Universal Scientific Library named after A.S. Pushkin. The significance of this collection is determined by the personality of bibliophiles – outstanding statesmen and public figures of the Russian Empire. On their estates, they were able to accumulate huge collections, in terms of the variety of repertoire not inferior to the libraries of Feofan Prokopovich, D.M. Golitsyn, M.V. Lomonosov. The collections contain many ex-libris, reflecting the ownership of a particular edition. The study of the identified collections and their book signs formed the basis of the substantial conclusions of the publication. We analyze the main characteristics of the most common types of ex-libris, showing the transition from a heraldic sign to a plot-shaped one. Consideration of the graphic material of the region’s largest libraries (collections of S.D. Sheremetyev, L.A. Voeikov, A.K. Kugushev, A.N. Nortsov) allows us to talk about the rich book culture of the owners of manor libraries of the second half of the 19th – early 20th century, a variety of plots and artistic performance of the created ex-libris.

Abstract (sommario):
International scientific and practical conference “Rumyantsev Readings” in 2020 was held in absentia. The Publishing house of the Russian State Library “Pashkov Dom” prepared the conference proceedings in two parts, which included 176 articles. Among the participants of the conference there are specialists from libraries of all levels and different departmental subordination, museums, archives, Universities, scientific research institutes in Russia, Belarus, Great Britain and Kazakhstan. The articles cover a wide range of issues on the theory and practice of library science, bibliography science, book studies, the history of librarianship and library activities at the present time. Considerable part of the reports was prepared under the theme “Libraries in the context of history: private collections and state book repositories”. In the year of the 75th anniversary of the Victory, many researchers turned to the history of libraries during the Great Patriotic War. The conference proceedings include materials about outstanding representatives of librarianship, researchers and collectors, where the authors analyse and evaluate their activities. Traditionally, “Rumyantsev readings” present a large number of works on the disclosure of the collections of libraries and archives, description of stored materials: manuscripts, rare books and book monuments, art editions, maps and printed music. Within the topics of the section “Library classification systems” there are presented the articles devoted to separate sections of Library Bibliographic Classification and general issues of system modernization and implementing it in practice, publication of LBC schedules and the value of its public e-version for the development of classification search and improving efficient use of library collections. Issues related to the current activities of foreign and, primarily, domestic libraries are presented in extremely wide range: from understanding the place of libraries in the modern space of socio-cultural communication and strategic approaches to innovation management to highlighting specific projects under implementation. The reports raise the topics of training future librarians in higher education institutions and improving their skills in future, developing and implementing standards, digitizing library collections, and bibliometric analysis. The article analyses the state of digitalization of scientific — information activities in libraries, presents characteristics of separate online information resources, raises questions on the development of regulatory framework for labour rationing and the formation of the library’s image in social networks and information publications about it. Publication of the proceedings will serve to achieve the main goal of the conference — to draw attention to the issues of preserving and studying the world cultural heritage, problems of functioning of libraries at the present historical stage, search for ways of innovative development, expand cooperation between cultural, educational, scientific institutions and intercultural interaction.

Describing library collections by location is nothing new. In the mid-nineteenth century, Luther Farnham published A Glance at Private Libraries, about libraries in the Boston area of the United States. Reginald Arthur Rye produced his highly praised Students’ Guide to the Libraries of London in England just over fifty years later. That we, no less than our forebears, value such discovery tools collocating collections is evident from their continued publication, whether in print or, more recently, electronic form. National, annual library directories still produced include The American Library Directory. In Britain, the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP)’s Libraries and Information Services in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland, a list of libraries by sector with contact details, remains available.

Abstract (sommario):
An ex-libris (a bookplate) is a valuable historical and cultural information resource. It helps to determine the ownership of a book in a particular collection, allows the understanding the history of existence of a copy that had several owners, and clarification the degree of its uniqueness. The purpose of the article is to analyze the bookplates available on the book rarities of the first quarter of the XIX century from the collection of the research library of Ulyanovsk State Pedagogical University named after I. N. Ulyanov. By means of the identification of book signs, the belonging of rare publications to private collections and the peculiarities of existence of each particular copy in the history of national culture are established. In particular, one of the books belonging to the lost Usolskaya library of count V. P. Orlov-Davydov, dispersed among the libraries of the country and reconstructed by specialists, was identified. Two other books were the part of private libraries of historical figures who were in fairly close relations with prominent figures of Russian literature (the poet M. Yu. Lermontov) and science (the inventor of radio A. S. Popov). The results of the research can expand the understanding of the uniqueness of rare copies of Russian and foreign publications from the Fund of the research library of the Ulyanovsk State Pedagogical University, such as” Selected spiritual works of Fenelon, Archbishop of Cambrai” (1820–1821), “Nouveau dictionnaire géographique universel” (New dictionary of geographical names) by Jacques McCarthy (1824) and «Histoire de France» (History of France) by Louis-Philippe Segur.

Founded in 1945, the University Library of Lodz currently holds about 28,000 old prints, including twenty-one incunabula. Most of the collection came to Lodz immediately after the war, from former German collections in Prussia, Pomerania and Silesia. From Pomerania comes a very interesting private collection: the library of Peter Kameke (1541–1614), which was originally housed in a small church in Lassehne (today: Łasin). In this article, I describe one of the books from this collection in terms of provenance and reconstruct its journey through various libraries over the centuries. The authors of the article considered it necessary to fill in certain gaps in academic literature concerning the histories and fate of the book collections of University staff in the specified period. The article represents publications from the book collections coming from outstanding employees of Novorossiyskiy University S. G. Vilinskyi, O. L. Kotseyovskyi, O. O. Kochubynskyi, I. A. Linnichenko, V.-P. N. Pavlovsky, O. V. Rystenko, E. M. Shchepkin, O. P. Dobroklonskyi who made a significant contribution to culture of the country, special attention being paid to books from the collection of the latter). The facts of acquisition of these book collections by University library are recorded in a number of documents of the State Archives of the Odesa Region, as well as in library’s inventory books, which registered book acquisitions at the turn of the century. The documents explaining the selection of a number of books listed in the appendix have not been found. However, the fact of their availability in private libraries of University lecturers can serve as additional evidence of thorough and in-depth study of relevant aspects of the humanities to which these publications are devoted by the owners of the above- mentioned collections. As a result of the research, a number of copies coming from these book collections have been identified. The article presents a brief description of book collections under consideration: personal data about the owner, the time of the book acquisition by the library, a number of identified copies, owner’s main centers of interest, information on book owners’ inscripts and bookplates if available. The authors also show whether one or another collection is kept as a single unit or is dispersed in library stocks as well as its relevance for readers. The paper deals with the importance of preserving the cultural heritage of previous centuries.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of the article is to reveal the role and importance of personal book collections for the formation of the library fund of the Military Medical Academy, as a unique information resource for educational, scientific and practical activities. The historical chain of library patronage is traced in the form of the donation to the library of entire book collections or their fragments by private individuals - representatives of various estates and social groups: statesmen, princes, merchants, publishers, bibliophiles. Information is provided on the largest donations of books and book collections by professors of the Academy and their heirs, on the further fate of these gifts. Among the professors-donors, the names of the leaders of the library are named: V.A. Manassein, A.R. Voynich-Syanozhentsky, D.P. Radoslavova. The origins of the formation of a long tradition of arranging separate cabinets for storing personal libraries of prominent representatives of medical science are considered. In different historical periods, there were personal cabinets of A.G. Bakherakht, Ya.V. Willie, D.I. Kashlakova, S.P. Botkin. The tradition continues to this day: in September 2022, the VMedA library solemnly accepted part of the personal book collection of Academician V.O. Samoilov, placed in a special cabinet, stylized as antique library furniture, which was taken care of by the students and followers of the scientist. Nowadays, the criteria and approaches to evaluating personal libraries are changing: the preservation of their integrity is of particular importance. There comes an understanding that the personal libraries of scientists are of particular interest for historical research: to study the biography, creative path, sources of intellectual development, the network of scientific communications of their owners, to reconstruct their personality and their fate. But only if the libraries are available for study in their entirety, without exceptions. Most of the collections turned out to be scattered in the fund without any hope of re-creation and reunification, at least virtual - in the form of bibliographic lists. Based on the foregoing, it was concluded that there are a number of problems in maintaining the collection unity of personal book collections, modern methods for solving these problems, including those based on the use of special library technologies, are proposed.

Abstract (sommario):
The author of the article discusses selected academic and popular publications on the history of libraries and librarianship in Poland which were issued between 1945 and 2015. In that period, information about the most important historical resources of various Polish libraries and early book collections was made available. In addition, the period was marked by progress in the study of materials originating before the end of the 18th century. Scholars published a range of methodological works and works about sources, contributing to the development of scholarship. At the same time, there were too few editions of source materials. After 1989, scholars intensified their efforts to find sources in foreign collections, especially in Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Russia and Germany. Polish collections kept abroad are yet to be fully researched and to have their inventories and catalogues published. The vast body of literature is uneven when it comes to its focus on individual historical periods, regions, subregions and local centres. It comprises publications on the history of libraries, their function and role in culture with regard to the history of publications focused on the types of libraries or individual libraries — of different traditions, sizes and the book, and stature. Scholars also explored the history of private book collections, reading rooms and libraries, as well as biographies of librarians and collectors. The quality of the publications varies. There are gaps in, for example, the history of libraries in the former Polish eastern borderlands and ‘blank pages’ in the historiography of Polish librarianship after the Second World War. There is a visible shortage of quantification of phenomena from the past of libraries, despite the fact that there are some possibilities in this respect. What is also needed is development in comparative studies, including from an international perspective, although this would require Polish historians to become more interested than before in the history of librarianship in other countries.

Abstract (sommario):
Preserving the historical-cultural heritage is an actual problem of fundamental scientific research. A special place in this heritage is the book culture including libraries - state, public, private, personal ones. Book collections of scientists refer to the special section of libraries. A holistic view of the outstanding researcher book collections allows complementing and enriching ideas about the researcher creative laboratory, as well as providing additional materials on the history of science, book culture and, even widly, the history of Russia. The article is devoted to the collection of books from the library of a Russian physicist-chemist, Professor of the Physical Faculty of Moscow State University, Doctor of Chemical Sciences, V. K. Semenchenko, who is a major specialist in chemistry of thermodynamics, theory of electrolyte solutions, surface tension. This study is research continuation carried on in the Central Scientific Library of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (CSL UB RAS) to investigate scientific and cultural heritage of the Urals and Russi. The research methodological basis is modern concepts of the history of book business in a broad socio-cultural perspective using the following techniques: bibliographic, functional, analytical-thematic, paleographic, systematic, bio-bibliographic and others. The small collection of V. K. Semenchenko’s books (100 units) entered the collection of CSL UB RAS in 1993 under the mediation of Academician Vladimir Pavlovich Skripov, Director of the Institute of Thermophysics of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, who was a former student and postgraduate of V. K. Semenchenko. The composition of the book collection is represented in the chart. There are many works of famous scholars, Rus- sian and Soviet classics of science of the XX century (books included in Digital Library «Russian Scientific Heritage») in V. K. Semenchenko’s collection. 42 volumes of the library have autographs of their owner V. K. Semenchenko. The books have inscriptions of authors, friends and relatives addressed to V. K. Semenchenko. The book collection uniqueness is evident due to book «Theory of atom» by of V. K. Semenchenko presented to the library by the researcher’s daughter. The book page-proofs (layout) were done in 1941. This book remained in a single copy. Many books and authors of V. K. Semenchenko’s books collection are of interest in terms of studying the history of the world science development. Thus, studying the book collection of a physicists contributes to investigating the acquisition history and stocks composition of CSL UB RAS, book culture, Russian and world science, and, in general, into the country historical and cultural heritage preservation.

AbstractIn the Dutch Republic the books that were sold in public auction were bound, which implied that they were second-hand. They came either from private collections or from booksellers' stock. For the eighteenth-century Leiden booksellers auctions were an important outlet for the second-hand trade. This is demonstrated on the basis of the auction ledgers of the firm of Luchtmans. In their auction catalogues booksellers often mixed their own stock in with private libraries. Of only 194 of the 1707 public auctions recorded for the period 1725-1805 catalogues are known, i.e. 11,4%. It is shown that these catalogues are not representative for public auctions in general and cannot be used as sources for developments in the book trade. The practice of mixing in and combining books makes their use as sources for the study of private ownership problematical. In an outline of the Leiden public auctions for the period 1725-1805 the number of auctions is given, as well as the turnovers per five-year period and the average annual turnovers. The fluctuations in the five-year turnovers for 1725-70 correspond with the general economic trends. A remarkable rise in the turnovers occurred between 1776 and 1785 - the more notable as the economic crisis of 1772-3 took a long time to overcome. Just in this period the position of the book and its cultural importance

Abstract (sommario):
The monastery of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin was founded in Roudnice by members of the Roudnice branch of the Lobkowicz family at the beginning of the 17th century, when also its library was established. With its approximately 1,800 volumes, it ranks among smaller, unexplored monastic libraries. Nevertheless, it contains a number of interesting and valuable fragments of earlier private book collections, coming from early modern aristocratic libraries as well as libraries of clergymen from nearby parishes. This article presents the most important of them. Particular attention is devoted to the fragment of the library of Ladislav Zejdlic of Schönfeld, originally placed at Encovany Castle in North Bohemia, and to book donations by members of the Roudnice branch of the Lobkowicz family, the main sponsors of the monastery.

Abstract (sommario):
In her recent address to a symposium of institutional and private collectors at the Library of Congress, Alice Schreyer used the notion of “ecology” to describe the network of relations that has helped sustain private collectors, dealers, and institutional curators since the modern university emerged alongside the Golden Age of book-collecting in the late nineteenth century. At least since the early 1960s, imaginative writers also have actively participated in this network while curators and librarians have become players in the literary scene. Here, I will be reading the traces of a few transactions between poets and special collections librarians over . . .

Abstract (sommario):
Outreach is an increasingly important responsibility for academic libraries, fulfilling the library’s own mission and supporting the wider institution’s goals around retention and student success. Unfortunately, it can be challenging to connect outreach initiatives to desired outcomes. Into this knowledge gap step Peggy Keeran and Carrie Forbes, who have edited a collection of outreach initiatives and strategies organized around four key elements of a successful outreach program: strategic vision and planning, program development and implementation, community outreach, and expanding outreach audiences. Individual chapter authors come from large and small universities in both public and private contexts, and present library outreach initiatives from the United States, Canada, and Indonesia.

Abstract (sommario):
The study of personal libraries (book collections) is timely due to the implementation of the state policy to expose library collections and study regional book (documentary) heritage. One can note an increasing interest of book historians, specialists in the field of library and book study activities in private book collections of famous people, outstanding cultural and scientific figures, as well as personal libraries of scientists.A holistic look at the book collections of scientists through the prism of the scientist’s book environment complements and enriches the idea of the researcher’s creative laboratory, and provides additional material on the history of science and book culture. The scientist’s personal library acquires a memorial status and contributes to preservation of his memory. The article is dedicated to the memory of Bogdan Vyacheslavovich Voitsekhovsky, a famous scientist, who made a great contribution into the national science and economy, the main years of whose life were associated with the Siberian Branch (SB) of the USSR Academy of Sciences – SB RAS and Novosibirsk Academgorodok. The purposeof this article is to characterize the personal library of Academician B. V. Voitsekhovsky stored in the Central Scientific Library of UrB RAS. The work reveals the composition of the library, characterizes the owner’s records and inscripts; determines the status of the researcher’s book collection as a personal (memorial) library, reflecting the main directions of the scholar’s scientific and inventive activities. Abstract (sommario):
The article discusses the monograph of E.P. Pirogova, dedicated to the reconstruction of the private library of the Ural owner of mines A.F. Turchaninov (1704—1787). The monograph is based on the unique source — the detailed inventory of property compiled in 1789. The document allowed to create the catalog of the Russian part of the collection and the review of foreign books. The monograph also includes the archaeographic publication of inventory materials related to the books and other printed products. The author of the monograph introduced into scientific circulation the detailed information about one of the largest private libraries in Russia in the second half of the 18th century and probably the most significant in the Urals in that historical period. It allows us to refute the existing view in historiography about the ceremonial nature of A.F. Turchaninovʼs book collection. Now the owner of mines and metallurgical works can be considered as an active and thoughtful collector of books and user of his own library, familiar with the cultural practices of the Era of Enlightenment.

Abstract (sommario):
This article is devoted to the analysis of owners’ stamps and inscriptions on manuscripts from the Günzburg family collection stored in the Russian State Library (RSL). The author did not set out to provide exhaustive information about the previous owners, part of whom still remains unidentified. The purpose of the article is to highlight the blocks of manuscripts that were previously part of other private libraries and later were acquired by the Günzburgs, as well as to focus on the most famous former owners of books. Information about them can be discovered in the owner’s inscriptions or, less often, stamps, which are usually found on the fly-leaf or the first folio of the manuscript. Sometimes, however, you can find out who owned a particular book by studying the catalogues of private libraries that were sold out after the death of their owners. This method let to discover among the previous owners of the Günzburg manuscripts such names as Nathan Nahman Koronel, scholar and book publisher, and Fischl Hirsch, bibliophile and bookseller. Based on information from the owners’ inscriptions, we learned that a number of manuscripts from the Günzburg collection were owned by such scholars as Seligmann Baer, Elyakim Carmoly and Shlomo Dubno. Some manuscripts of the collection bear inscriptions of Parisian bookseller Menahem Lifshits with the date and information to whom this particular manuscript belonged earlier. Almost all of them originated from various private libraries on the territory of modern Italy and pertained to more or less known now Italian rabbis or bibliophiles. It is worth noting that the surnames of Italian Jewish families, such as Segre, Finzi, Foa and Travis, are more often found in the owners’ inscriptions on the manuscripts from the Günzburg library than Jewish names from other regions. Among the famous owners of Italian origin is Abraham Yosef Shlomo Graziano, who was Rabbi, scholar and poet and was known for his rather wide view of the Jewish religious laws — Halakha. Separately, it should be noted a few female names and their ownership inscriptions found among the owners of the manuscripts. The article presents the original spelling of some of the names of the owners of manuscripts.

Abstract (sommario):
The article is devoted to study of the reading circle of various population groups in the Tomsk Province in the second half of the 19th — early 20th centuries. The book, as an important attribute of the spiritual realization of society, took a leading place in the system of cultural values of the era, became the most important means of human communication. A great contribution to the development of the cultural life of the Altai district was made by the technical and scientific activities among the poor. The study of book collections of exiles, their activities in opening libraries, which were based on private collections, contribute to the expansion of ideas about the nature and scope of their versatile activities. The end of the 19th — early 20th centuries is characterized in Siberia by the social activity of various segments of the population, an increase in the need of society for a printed word. Thanks to the active work of the «Society for the Promotion of the Construction of Rural Free Libraries», in the Tomsk Province, free rural libraries began to open. They completed their main task in distributing the book in the remote settlements of the Tomsk Province. In Siberia, there is a change in the traditional way of peasants in connection with the heyday of the cooperative movement, the alleged dissemination of the theoretical and practical knowledge. The cooperatives began to organize libraries. The important qualitative changes in reading preferences are gradually taking place: classical literature, specialized books and periodicals are in increasing demand.
