Exposure to impacts and vibrations has been shown to be detrimental to cross country mountain bike performance and health. Therefore, any strategy aimed at attenuating such exposure is useful to participants and/or industry. The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of tyre size and tyre inflation pressure on exposure to impacts. Participants completed nine trials of a technical section (controlled for initial speed and route taken) including nine separate conditions involving three tyre sizes and three tyre inflation pressures normalised per tyre. Performance was determined by time to negotiate the technical section while triaxial accelerometers recorded accelerations (128 Hz) to quantify impact exposure and the subsequent effects on soft tissue response. Increases in tyre size within the range used improved performanceP<0.0001while changes to tyre inflation pressure had no effectP=0.6870on performance. Larger tyre sizes and lower tyre inflation pressures significantlyP<0.0001reduced exposure to impacts which could be augmented or negated due to an interaction between tyre size and inflation pressureP<0.0001. It is recommended that mountain bikers use larger tyres, inflated to the moderate pressures used within this study, in order to increase performance and reduce the risk of overuse injuries.

When a mother is supported to breastfeed, the benefits for her mental health are significant. However, if pressured or unsupported, the opposite is true. This research examines mothers’ breastfeeding experiences, exploring how perceived pressure can impact perinatal mental health. A sample of 501 respondents to a research questionnaire was explored using Reflexive Thematic Analysis. Three main themes identified were perceived pressure to breastfeed, perceived pressure not to breastfeed and mental health impact. The main findings were that mothers received conflicting advice from healthcare professionals, and pressures to feed in a certain way came from their support networks, as well as from their internal beliefs. Perceived pressures negatively impacted maternal mental health, while positive breastfeeding experiences benefitted mental health outcomes.

A mathematical model is presented for the high pressures and sudden velocity changes which may occur in the impact between a region of incompressible liquid and either a solid surface or a second liquid region. The theory rests upon the well-known idea of pressure impulse, for the sudden initiation of fluid motion in incompressible fluids. We consider the impulsive pressure field which occurs when a moving fluid region collides with a fixed target, such as when an ocean wave strikes a sea wall. The boundary conditions are given for modelling liquid-solid and liquid-liquid impact problems. For a given fluid domain, and a given velocity field just before impact, the theory gives information on the peak pressure distribution, and the velocity after impact. Solutions for problems in simple domains are presented, which give insight into the peak pressures exerted by a wave breaking against a sea wall, and a wave impacting in a confined space. An example of liquid-liquid impact is also examined. Results of particular interest include a relative insensitivity to the shape of the incident wave, and an increased pressure impulse when impact occurs in a confined space. The theory predicts that energy is lost from the bulk fluid motion and we suggest that this energy can be transferred to a thin jet of liquid which is projected away from the impact region.

AbstractThe effects of scale and aeration on violent breaking wave impacts with trapped and entrained air are investigated both analytically and numerically. By dimensional analysis we show that the impact pressures for Froude scaled conditions prior to the impact depend on the scale and aeration level. The Bagnold–Mitsuyasu scaling law for the compression of an air pocket by a piston of incompressible water is rederived and generalised to 3D air pockets of arbitrary shape. Numerical results for wall pressure, force and impulse are then presented for a flip-through impact, a low-aeration impact and a high-aeration impact, for nine scales and five levels of initial aeration. Two of these impact types trap a pocket of air at the wall. Among the findings of the paper is that for fixed initial aeration, impact pressures from the flip-through impact broadly follow Froude scaling. This is also the case for the two impact types with trapped air pockets for impact pressures below 318 kPa, while impact pressures above this value broadly follow the Bagnold–Mitsuyasu scaling law with full-scale pressures greater than those predicted by the Froude law. For all impact types, the effect of aeration is found to reduce the maximum impact pressure, maximum force and impulse. Good agreement with the asymptotic model of Peregrine & Thais (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 325, 1996, pp. 377–397) is found for the flip-through impact pressure and a fair agreement is found for the low- and high-aeration impacts. Based on the numerical results, a modified scaling curve that combines Froude scaling and the Bagnold–Mitsuyasu law is suggested. The practical implications of the findings are discussed and attention is drawn to the limitations of physical model tests.

AbstractBackgroundPatients with bidirectional cavopulmonary anastomosis have unphysiologically high superior caval vein pressure as it equals pulmonary artery pressure. Elevated superior caval vein pressure may cause communicating hydrocephalus and macrocephaly. This study analysed whether there exists an association between head circumference and superior caval vein pressure in patients with single ventricle physiology.MethodsWe carried out a retrospective analysis of infants undergoing Fontan completion at our institution from 2007 to 2013. Superior caval vein pressures were measured during routine catheterisation before bidirectional cavopulmonary anastomosis and Fontan completion as well as head circumference, adjusted to longitudinal age-dependent percentiles.ResultsWe included 74 infants in our study. Median ages at bidirectional cavopulmonary anastomosis and Fontan were 4.8 (1.6–12) and 27.9 (7–40.6) months, respectively. Head circumference showed significant growth from bidirectional cavopulmonary anastomosis until Fontan completion (7th (0–100th) versus 20th (0–100th) percentile). There was no correlation between superior caval vein pressure and head circumference before Fontan (R2=0.001). Children with lower differences in superior caval vein pressures between pre-bidirectional cavopulmonary anastomosis and pre-Fontan catheterisations showed increased growth of head circumference (R2=0.19).ConclusionsPatients with moderately elevated superior caval vein pressure associated with single ventricle physiology did not have a tendency to develop macrocephaly. There is no correlation between superior caval vein pressure before Fontan and head circumference, but between bidirectional cavopulmonary anastomosis and Fontan head circumference increases significantly. This may be explained by catch-up growth of head circumference in patients with more favourable haemodynamics and concomitant venous pressures in the lower range. Further studies with focus on high superior caval vein pressures are needed to exclude or prove a correlation.

An experimental investigation has been carried out to study the fluid pressures in partially liquid-filled vessels when they are suddenly accelerated by impact along the longitudinal axis. The experiments were conducted with three horizontal cylindrical tanks of different length-to-diameter ratios of L/D = 6.0, 3.5, 2.0. The tanks were filled with water at ambient pressure and temperature and were accelerated using a large steel impact hammer. Internal tank wall pressures caused by the acceleration were measured with transient pressure transducers. Six types of pressure-time histories have been observed and results indicated that the pressure profile changes with fill level and transducer location. The peak pressures on the end of the tank are strongly affected by the fill level and the tank length-to-diameter ratio L/D. A modal change in the behavior of liquid movement has been found around fill level h/D = 0.95. For fill levels h/D above 0.95, the pressure in the tanks acted like either a water hammer or an accelerated fluid column, depending on the duration of the impact relative to the pressure wave transit time. For the fill levels with h/D below 0.95, liquid sloshing activity was involved and the pressure at the end of the tank was a function of the liquid dynamic pressure. This modal change also caused the location of maximum peak pressure to move from the impact end of the tank to the tank top. In some cases the pressure on the tank top was two times larger than that at the tank impact end. The maximum pressure observed from the tests was on the top of the tank. This modal change may have some significance in some transportation applications.

Abstract This article presents the results of an experimental study on the impact of leading wheel tires 15.5R38 and 16.9R38 on soil. Specifically, the study analyzed the influence of vertical load on the maximum tire pressure (MTA) and internal air pressure on soil. The variations in maximum soil pressures of 15.5R38 and 16.9R38 tires at different internal air pressures depending on corresponding loads were investigated. The characteristics of changes in permissible pressure and loading of tires on soil are graphically depicted, and the permissible standards for their use in agricultural work are determined. Recommendations are provided for using tires at the minimum and maximum permissible internal air pressures. Using values smaller than the recommended values can lead to a decrease in the useful life of the tire.

This study explores the tremendous pressure Japanese students must endure in the pursuit of academic achievement. It identifies the sources of student's pressure and discusses the cultural, social, and economic conditions that influence a fiercely competitive educational system. The focus of this study is the impact of academic pressures on Japanese students.
Japanese education is a single-minded drive for achievement that results in what many refer to as examination hell. The university entrance examination is at the root of the pressures that are placed on students and is the primary mechanism responsible for driving competition. The life-long ramifications of students performance on this examination are far reaching. As a result, the pressures that are exerted upon students to achieve are overwhelming. Mothers, teachers, peers, and society contribute to the pressures that are placed on students to achieve, while many children continue to fall victim to emotional, psychological, and physical harm.
The study provides richly descriptive narrative accounts of student's experiences, thoughts and feelings seen from a student's perspective. The study gives voice to Japanese students and invites them to tell it like it is.

In this Master Thesis work, the effect of pressure on sintering of cemented carbides is investigated. Special focus hasbeen given to the residual porosity after sintering. It is well known that sintering shrinkage depends on binder phasecontent, grain size, temperature and pressure. Thus 4 different cemented carbides grades were selected. The gradeswere pressed into standard products and TRS (Tensile Rupture Strength) rods with two different shrinkage factors.These were then sintered at different pressures and temperatures. Thereafter the impact of pressure on propertiessuch as Density, Coercivity, Porosity and TRS were analyzed. The observations were further supported with Weibullprobability analysis and fracture surface analysis in SEM.It has been shown that there exists a distinct threshold pressure at which significant reduction in porosity occurs forgiven compacted densities. For 3 out of 4 cemented carbide grades it has been observed that P2 sintering pressure issufficient to meet desired product characteristics. The fourth grade required a minimum sintering pressure of P4 toachieve desired quality criteria. Moreover it has been concluded that an increased sintering pressure increasesmaterial strength, as compared to vacuum sintering, thereby reducing the amount of early failures caused by poresduring TRS test.                                    Keywords: Cemented Carbides, Pressurized Sintering, Tungsten carbide, Porosity, Vacuum sintering, TensileRupture Strength, Weibull analysis, Fracture surface analysis.

When a high voltage cable is transported throughout factory it is affected by sidewall pressure in cable bends between the roller supports and the cable. The problem is when the sidewall pressure is too high it will deform the cable which can have a negative impact on the conductivity of the cable. The roller supports can also get damaged because of fatigue. These negative consequences are the subject to exploration by implementing known analytical solution of contact mechanics developed by Hertz together with finite element analysis and experimental testing.   Two possible methods of measuring the radial force is studied to be able adjust the roller supports positions to reduce the sidewall pressure on the cable. The first one is to use the pressure film to determine the radial force. The second one is to by measuring the compression in cable to thereafter translate it to radial force by having the relation between compression and radial force for the specific cable.   Two different types of high voltage cables, a direct current (DC) cable and an alternating current (AC) cable is studied by using finite element method and experimental tests to see the relation between the compression and radial force in the cable. Also in these experimental tests the pressure films are used and evaluated to see if this measuring technique combined with Hertzian’s theory make it possible determining the radial force.   For the method of using the pressure films to determine the radial force the result shows it is difficult to translate the pressure from the films to radial force for a high voltage because of the cable’s armouring wires. The conclusion about these the pressure films is that they are good to use to describe the compression and can be used as relative measurement between the rollers but not for determine the radial force.   The result shows it is a possible to describe relation between compression and radial force for a high voltage cable and use this information to determine the radial force by measuring the compression. But the conclusion is that it is ineffective and less accurate way of measuring the radial force.   These results from this thesis are important for further research within the area and they help creating a greater understanding of sidewall pressure related problems in cables.

Emotions are an important underlying factor that may interact with pressure and other situational variables to influence auditors’ judgments and decisions. This study seeks to identify emotional intelligence (EI) as a key factor in dealing with emotions and pressures in an audit context. In this paper, I focus on how EI may influence the relation between job pressures (i.e., time budget pressure and client incentive pressure) on the auditor’s judgment. Specifically, I investigate the moderating effect of emotional intelligence on auditor judgments when auditors experience both internal and external pressures. The results suggest that the moderating influence of EI on auditor judgments can effectively reduce auditors’ tendency to engage in dysfunctional behavior in order to improve audit quality. Furthermore, there is a positive relation between EI and professional skepticism suggesting that auditors with high EI are more skeptical and assess higher risk than auditors with low EI. Finally, moderation analysis suggests that EI is a significant mechanism which drives the joint effects of different type of pressures on auditor judgments.

Hypertension leads to vascular complications including endothelial dysfunction, heart failure and stroke. The purpose of the present studies was to investigate the chronic and acute impact of high pressure on vascular responsiveness. In Study I, isometric tension measurements demonstrated that contractions to phenylephrine, in the presence of indomethacin (inhibitor of cyclooxygenase), were smaller in aortae of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) with, than in those without, endothelium, while they were comparable in such preparations of normotensive Wistar-Kyoto rat (WKY); the difference in SHR aortae was not affected by L-NAME [inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase (NOS)]. This endothelium-dependent, NOS-independent inhibition of phenylephrine-induced contraction was greater in older SHR (36 versus 18 weeks), and abolished by NO scavengers and ODQ (inhibitor of soluble guanylyl cyclase). It was observed not only in the presence of indomethacin but also apocynin (antioxidant), but inhibited by diphenyleneiodonium (inhibitor of cytochrome P450 reductase). These results suggest that the endothelium-dependent, eNOS-independent inhibition is caused by NO produced by cytochrome P450 reductase in the endothelium of the SHR aorta. Study II investigated the mechanisms underlying the reduced contractions to prostaglandin E2 [agonist of prostaglandin E2 and thromboxane-prostanoid (TP) receptors] by a previous exposure to phenylephrine (agonist of α1-adrenoceptor) in the aortic smooth muscle of the SHR. This inhibition induced by the pre-activation of α1-adrenoceptor was augmented in aortae of older SHR (36 versus 18 weeks) and was not present in WKY preparations. Pre-exposure to the protein kinase C (PKC) activator, phorbol 12,13-dibutyrate, also inhibited subsequent contractions to prostaglandin E2 in SHR aortae. Inhibition of PKC by calphostin C abolished the effect of pre-exposure to phenylephrine. The mRNA expressions of PKC isoforms differed in WKY and SHR smooth muscle. These experiments suggest that in the SHR but not the WKY aorta, α1-adrenergic activation causes heterologous desensitization of TP receptor through activation of a specific PKC isoform(s). In Study III, experiments were performed in a pressure myograph to determine whether or not acute elevation of transmural pressure in the isolated carotid artery of adult mouse (10-12 weeks) impairs endothelium-dependent dilatation by increasing angiotensin II expression or by directly activating AT1 receptors. Transient exposure of arteries to increased pressure (150 mmHg, three hours) inhibited endothelium-dependent, NO-mediated dilatations to acetylcholine, but did not affect responses to the NO donor DETA-NONOate. Inhibiting angiotensin II signaling or angiotensin converting enzyme prevented the impairment of endothelium-dependent dilatation by elevated pressure. Elevated pressure increased the expression of angiotensinogen [precursor of angiotensin II]. Thus, exposure of carotid arteries to elevated pressure leads to local release of angiotensin II, which activates AT1 receptors to cause endothelial dysfunction. In summary, chronic increased pressure increased the endothelial NO release produced by cytochrome P450 reductase from nitrate and developed the heterologous desensitization of TP receptor caused by PKC in SHR aorta. Acute increased pressure impaired endothelium-dependent NO-mediated vasodilatation by activation of local angiotensin system in adult mouse carotid artery. These processes likely contribute to the pathogenesis of hypertension-induced vascular dysfunction and organ injury.

Observational studies on the association between birth weight and adult blood pressure provide suggestive evidence that exposures during fetal development can have lasting impacts on health. The effect of maternal nutrition during pregnancy on offspring blood pressure has been demonstrated in animal models, but data from cohort studies in humans have proven inconclusive. The follow-up of randomised controlled trials of nutritional supplementation during pregnancy can add high quality data to this research field; this thesis focuses on the effects in three separate trials. Protein energy supplementation provided to pregnant women in rural Gambia was unrelated to offspring blood pressure at 11-17 years old (n=1267). Again in The Gambia, maternal calcium supplementation compared to placebo was also unrelated to offspring blood pressure at 5-10 years old (n=350). In rural Bangladesh there was no effect of maternal food or multiple micronutrient supplementation on offspring systolic blood pressure at 4.5 years old (n=2335). The micronutrient intervention was also unrelated to offspring diastolic blood pressure, but there was evidence that an early invitation to enter a governmental food supplementation programme was associated with marginally lower diastolic blood pressure: 0.58mmHg (95% Cl: 0.06,1.11; P: 0.03). In this setting, randomisation to receive counselling to promote exclusive breast feeding was not associated with offspring blood pressure at 4.5 years of age and none of the interventions were associated with offspring kidney function, assessed as ultrasound-obtained volume and glomerular filtration rate calculated from plasma Cystatin C. These data suggest that the maternal diet during pregnancy, at least those aspects of intake that can be altered during supplementation trials, may not be directly relevant for the determination of offspring blood pressure. Nutritional exposures during other stages of the life course may prove to be more important

Abstract (sommario):
Hospitalized children are vulnerable to pressure injuries. Multiple methods are available to decrease pressure injuries. One specific method is the pediatric pressure injury prevention bundle, which includes device rotation, moisture management, positioning, skin assessment, and support surface management. Although this prevention bundle is available nationwide, it is not known if this type of bundled methodology helps decrease pressure injuries in hospitalized children. Secondary data regarding nursing interventions implemented as a bundle and pressure injury rates from a large pediatric hospital consortium were used to address this gap in the literature. The research questions explored the impact of the pressure injury prevention bundle on pressure injury rates over time and further dissected the data to determine the significance of each intervention in the treatment bundle. Benoit and Mion's model for performance improvement along with the continuous quality improvement model used by the hospital consortium guided the study. The secondary data sample included 102 children's hospitals participating in the national initiative Solutions for Patient Safety. Pearson correlation statistics revealed a significant inverse relationship between nursing interventions and pressure injury rates for hospitalized children. The findings indicated a 57% reduction in rates of pressure injuries over 5 years with nursing participation in implementing the pediatric pressure injury prevention bundle. The impact of any one intervention over the bundle was inconclusive. Positive social change is seen in the ability to decrease pressure injuries in hospitalized children by nurses' implementation of a pediatric pressure injury prevention bundles.

Abstract In nuclear power plants power actuated pressure relief valves serve several purposes. They act as safety valves and open automatically in response to unusually high pressures in the primary system. They also act as power operated valves and are used to relieve steam in response to automatic or manually initiated control signals. These valves are required to lift completely over a short duration from the time that they receive an actuation signal, or the system pressure exceeds the set point. This short lift time results in the valve disk moving at high velocities, and can result in high impact forces on the piston and stem when the valve fully opens. In order to evaluate and improve the performance of a two-stage power actuated relief valve, an analysis was performed to calculate the impact force on the main disk piston when it opened and the resulting stresses. The analysis was based on the main disk piston velocity measured during valve testing. Of particular interest were the stresses in the threaded connection between the stem and the main disk piston.

Abstract Over the last decade, multiple carbon steel flanges brittle fracture failures have led the industry to issue a global alert on standard ASTM A105 flanges toughness values at temperatures higher than −20°F (−29°C), the minimum temperature allowed by the current editions of ASME B16.5 and ASME B31.3. The ASME BPV VIII Subgroup Toughness penalized these components by assigning the material the UCS-66 Curve A and modified UCS-66(c) to limit the minimum temperature of standard A105 flanges to 0°F (−18°C), unless the flanges have been normalized and manufactured to fine grain practice, after which they can be used down to the temperature permitted by ASME B16.5. In order to determine whether these changes would provide acceptable toughness values, nineteen (19) flanges were purchased from local manufacturers in both as-forged and normalized conditions and were subjected to several tests including charpy testing at various temperatures, McQuaid-Ehn, hardness testing, metallography, grain sizing, and chemical analysis. The results suggest that complying with UCS-66(c) does not necessarily guarantee acceptable toughness results for flanges that were normalized and manufactured to fine grain practice, and this is attributed to low Mn:C ratios and possibly uncontrolled heat treatment procedure. On the other hand, a number of non-normalized standard flanges have been found to provide very low toughness values at temperatures as high as 32°F (0°C), despite the current state of UCS-66(c) allowing use down to a minimum temperature of 0°F (−18°C). In view of the above, this paper discusses and evaluates some of the possible additional technical requirements that users could specify to minimize the risk of brittle fracture on standard ASTM A105 flanges, as well as a number of methods to guarantee better toughness performance in standard flanges.

This report presents an assessment of the effectiveness of a hydrotest in exposing defects in new and existing onshore and offshore pipelines. The study includes an assessment of the type and size of flaws that testing can and cannot identify through pressure testing for new lines and retesting for existing lines. The study included an assessment of gas (air, nitrogen, methane, etc.) versus water pressure testing to assess leak tightness involved comparing the detectability of flaws based on gas pressure testing at either the maximum allowable operating pressure (MAOP) or up to 80 percent of specified minimum yield stress (SMYS) and water testing at pressures from 90 through 110 percent of SMYS. The study includes some evaluation of alternatives to preservice hydrotesting as the impact of hydrotesting based on the toughness of the pipe steel.

The objective of the PRCI MATR-3-11 Composite Repair Load Transfer Study was to evaluate the effect of internal pipe pressure during installation of composite reinforcement systems. Historically, there has been little work evaluating the effect of internal pressure during installation, even though almost all composite installations on transmission pipelines are performed with internal pressure present in the pipe. The focus of this work was specifically limited to reinforcement of pipelines containing simulated corrosion anomalies. Five composite repair technologies from four composite manufacturers were evaluated in this study including: � Western Specialties Ultra-Wrap (E-glass/epoxy) � Western Specialties Composi-Sleeve (steel sleeve with E-glass overwrap) � Citadel (carbon fiber/epoxy) � Furmanite (carbon fiber/epoxy) � NRI Steel Wrap (high-modulus carbon fiber/epoxy) This study used full-scale testing to analyze the load transfer between the composite repair and pipe with internal pressure present during installation and whether this condition impacts the reinforcement provided by the composite repair system. The anomaly configuration evaluated in this study was a machined corrosion defect simulating 50% wall loss in 12.75-inch x 0.375-inch, Grade X42 pipe material. For safety, internal pressure during installation was limited to 50% SMYS (1,236 psig) for the corrosion samples. The composite repairs for the corrosion defects were installed at internal pressure levels of 0 psig, 25% SMYS (618 psig), and 50% SMYS (1,236 psig). Following repair installation, the reinforced full-scale samples were burst tested or pressure cycled to failure to evaluate the repair's performance. Results indicated that, in general, internal pressure during installation did not significantly impact the ability of the composite systems to reinforce the corrosion anomalies evaluated in this study when installed at or below 50% SMYS. Installation pressures up to 50% SMYS had no noticeable effect on the burst pressure of the corroded sample composite repairs, and the burst pressure of all repairs were equivalent to pressure levels for an unreinforced, undamaged pipe. Also, all repairs failed at approximately the same average burst pressure, regardless of installation pressure. Furthermore, installation pressures up to 50% SMYS had little or no noticeable effect on the fatigue life of reinforced corrosion samples; all sample repairs reached the target runout of 250,000 cycles. Observations from the burst testing suggested that loads from the corroded region were not transferred to the composite repair until the corroded region began to yield, regardless of the pressure at which the composite was installed (applicable for installation pressures at or below 50% SMYS and a corrosion depth of 50%). The results and findings of this study provide valuable information to the pipeline industry for addressing an issue of significant interest for many years, and one not previously addressed in a comprehensive manner via full-scale testing. An important observation from this study is that the performance of composite repairs made on corrosion defects does not appear to be appreciably reduced when internal pressures up to 50% SMYS are present during installation.
