Abstract (sommario):
Gait analysis describes the process of systematically quantifying mechanical aspects of walking or running to aid in the examination of a patient/client. In the publication Gait Analysis: An Introduction, Whittle (2002) identifies the eye as being the first tool in this assessment, with technology being available to supplement this visual analysis. Technological analysis tools include two-dimensional (2D) video, three-dimensional (3D) motion analysis, pressure plates, and pressure insoles. The application of technology has increased our understanding of human gait substantially. This chapter introduces the basic tools of gait analysis and highlights specific considerations when selecting appropriate tools for the assessment of walking gait. Details of running gait are provided in Chapter 1.8....

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter reviews the book Hasidism Incarnate: Hasidism, Christianity and the Construction of Modern Judaism (2015), by Shaul Magid. In Hasidism Incarnate, Magid shows how incarnation works in Hasidism and discusses the potential of Hasidism to mediate between Judaism and Christianity. According to Magid, Hasidism’s theology is incarnational: as in Christianity, he argues, God in Hasidism becomes incarnate by suffusing human beings with divinity. Magid builds on an extensive set of writings by Elliot Wolfson regarding how the medieval kabbalists adopted a theology of incarnation. As opposed to medieval Jewish mysticism, however, Magid believes that Hasidism developed “outside the Christian gaze,” which gave it the freedom to adopt an incarnational theology without the need for apologetics. He views Hasidism as modern in that it lays the groundwork for a real dialogue with Christianity, even if that was not its original intention.

Abstract (sommario):
This authoritative annotated document collection surveys and explains efforts to censor, intimidate, suppress—and reform and improve—news organizations and journalism in America, from the newspapers of colonial times to the social media that saturates the present day. This primary source collection will help readers to understand how the press has been vilified (usually by powerful political or corporate interests) over the course of American history, with a special focus on current events and how these efforts to censor or influence news coverage often flout First Amendment protections concerning freedom of the press. Selected documents highlight efforts to intimidate, silence, condemn, marginalize, and otherwise undercut the credibility and influence of American journalism from the colonial era through the Trump presidency. Most of the featured documents focus on efforts borne out of self-interested attempts to shape or conceal news for political or economic gain or personal fame, but coverage also includes instances in which press actions, attitudes, or priorities deserved censure. All told, the collection will be a valuable resource for understanding the importance of a free press to American life (and the constitutional basis for preserving such), the motivations (both selfish and altruistic) of critics of American journalism from the earliest days of the Republic to today, and the impact of all of the above on American society.

Abstract (sommario):
Frontal lobe gait disorders are characterized by a pattern of gait that is not explained by extrapyramidal or pyramidal dysfunction with dyspraxic features reflecting a “higher order” difficulty with the coding of the pattern of movement required for normal gait rather than the subcortical control of gait or the pyramidal final common pathway. Magnetic resonance imaging is the most useful single investigation that tends to reveal vascular or neurodegenerative etiologies, with the less common normal pressure hydrocephalus being the one treatable cause that should not be missed. The majority of higher order frontal lobe gait disorders are not treatable and patients require a wheelchair for safety.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter discusses how the U.S. entry into World War II marked a watershed for both the Negro press generally and the Associated Negro Press (ANP) specifically. The “Double V” campaign among African Americans targeting fascism abroad and Jim Crow at home was a simple continuation and escalation of ANP prewar policy. Despite the racial progress propelled by the antifascist war, there were contrary disquieting notes that did not escape the gaze of Claude Barnett. The Negro press could hardly ignore the ambivalence, if not outright support, within their constituency for Tokyo. This factor helped to further propel black militancy at a moment when Washington was demanding stolid acquiescence in the face of the external threat. This widespread sentiment had led FBI leader J. Edgar Hoover to demand Espionage Act indictments of certain Negro papers.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter offers a focused study on the Jaffa-based daily Filastin, arguably the most influential Palestinian newspaper of the 1920s and 1930s, published in Arabic by ‘Isa al-‘Isa and edited by Yusuf Hanna. In 1929, an English-language edition, Falastin, was launched initially consisting entirely of denunciations of Zionist activities and appeals to the British mandate authorities for redress with little news reporting. As time passed, however, both its tone and content changed in significant ways. News reports displaced blanket condemnations on the front pages, while complaints to the authorities gave way to stories that offered reasons for the mandatory government to take action. Such shifts reflected not only the growing journalistic professionalism of the staff of Falastin but also a transformation in the attitude of Palestinian nationalists towards both the British and the broader international community.

Abstract (sommario):
Newspaper buildings such as the Tribune Tower and Daily News headquarters have long stood as evidence of Chicago’s twin status as a media and architecture capital. But what might we discover if we focus our gaze not on these iconic sites of media power but on the media outlets, and media buildings, that primarily served the city’s African American communities? Moving these sources and spaces from the margins to the center, A House for the Struggle provides a bold new history of Chicago’s Black press through the lens of the built environment. Focusing on two landmark Black press enterprises—the Chicago Defender and Johnson Publishing Company—but drawing on a wide range of publications and media concerns that includes the Associated Negro Press, the Broad Ax, the Chicago Bee, the Chicago Whip, and Muhammad Speaks, this book demonstrates how the buildings of Chicago’s Black press became key sites in the cultural and political geography of Black Chicago. As activist hubs, community centers, art galleries, and tourist hotspots, Black media buildings served as key symbols of racial protest, Black achievement, and community advancement. Concurrently, the relationship between editorial and spatial politics—between Black media buildings and the publications they housed—helped to write new geographies of Black urban life into existence.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter details the continuous lobbying and organizing efforts of political exiles as well as their efforts to draw attention to their anti-Marcos and anti-martial law rhetoric. Reflecting their bias for a free press and scorn for the controlled press in the Philippines, the major U.S. media consistently gave the exiles favorable coverage. By and large, the exiles had won the media war in the United States against the regime. The generally critical attitude of the U.S. media acutely troubled Mrs. Marcos. She summoned the American ambassador, Michael Armacost, to express her husband's “anxieties about his upcoming [1982] visit to the USA.” The regime countered as best as it could. During the first year of martial law, it ran colorful multipage spreads in influential U.S. business magazines such as Fortune and Business Week. The message: there was a new, much better investment climate in the country, and it was a safe tourist destination.

Abstract (sommario):
By the end of the 7th century, a new superpower was applying pressure on the East Roman Empire. ‘Byzantium and Islam’ describes the rise of Arab power and the evolution of Islam. The Damascus-based Umayyad dynasty ruled over the Islamic empire from the late 7th to the middle of the 8th century and directed the jihad against Constantinople and gave greater definition to Islam. The priorities of the Abbasid caliphs of Baghdad in the 8th century lay to the east, easing pressure on Byzantium. The subsequent fragmentation of the Islamic world allowed Byzantium’s revival through the 9th and 10th centuries. By the early 11th century, Byzantium was once again the greatest power in Christendom.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter focuses on the relations between the four main stages of de facto authority laid out in this book’s framework, and the respective legitimacy of the international courts (ICs) in question. It also shows that interesting questions about moral legitimacy are brought to light by the transitions from narrow to intermediary and to the extensive and perhaps popular authority of ICs. The chapter then acknowledges that the realities of the development of ICs, and the fascinating ways in which they gain—or sometimes fail to gain—practical authority, put some pressure on established ways of thinking about matters of legitimacy of practical authorities. As in much else in the domain of international law, both the realities on the ground and the theorizing about them are very much works in progress.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter explores how activists used institutional channels to influence the side agreements. It reveals, through documented interactions, the cat-and-mouse game between activists and the state as they responded to each other’s maneuvering and changed their strategies in relationship to each other. It shows how activists and their legislative allies applied pressure on negotiators, who ultimately succumbed to pressure by strengthening environmental and labor protections at multiple points during negotiations. The chapter also analyzes the unexpected ability of environmentalists to push for and obtain stronger protections in the environmental side agreement than labor activists achieved in the labor side agreement. This is particularly surprising because unions were stronger and had substantially more political and financial resources to draw upon than did environmentalists.

Chapters 6 follows the children out of the institutional gate and into adulthood. It draws on rich personal evidence created through the ‘licence’ (or early release) system as well as census, military, employment, criminal justice, and local press records to track their subsequent journeys through life. The chapter focuses on the experiences of the majority who—to our knowledge—desisted from further offending. This group might be described as adolescent-limited offenders. The factors that seem likely to have contributed to their ‘successful’ reintegration are examined, and there is consideration of what that ‘success’ may have meant in terms of wider life chances and social mobility.
