Testo completoThe present tense can be studied according to a new approach, taking both the formal apparatus and the modal point of view into account, especially when the temporal reference is not relevant. So in some written utterances, which do not have any oral equivalent and are not communication-oriented, the present tense does not refer to any specific situation, whether simultaneous to the speech act or not. It allows, through a co-text and a context, both involved in this "dis-actualization", to refer to a "prototypical" event, not in the semantic sense of the word but in the sense of a "model" : this event, expressed in the present tense, becomes "dis-actualized", unreal but exemplary; it can be realized in many different ways (we can use the locution "paradigmatic reference"). That is why we refer to it as a "prototyping" modality of the present tense, for example in the philosophical examples, legal texts and narrative manuscripts

Testo completoAfter a brief introduction to machine translation, with a few definitions relating to this domain, the author studies the treatment of time and aspect in some of the existing m. T. Systems. A whole section is devoted to the european pr0ject "eurotra", with a critical approach. The main partof the thesis consists of a thorough examination of the translations of the french "present" tense into english : 1) what are the various possible translations (study of a corpus)? 2) what has to be taken into account in order to infer the value of the present and hence translate it (referential interpretation, status of the process, noun determination, lexical aspect), 3) what are the rules that can be drawn for the automatic translation of these verbal forms?

Testo completoThis thesis in Linguistics is part of a study of historical verbal morphology and examines the evolution of alternation of verbal stems in the French present tense. The overall framework is that of a linguistic study combining a description of the French verbal system and the history of representations of French language, in a long diachrony context, as certain changes are very old, and others are the result of the medieval period, while some others date from the modern period. We described the functioning of verbal paradigms in synchrony and diachrony, while defining the fundamental concepts used. We thus redefinied the notion of ‘regular verb’ and ‘irregular verb’ from a historical point of view. The alternation of verbal stems and the phonological variation of the verbal stem have been distinguished. We analysed the concept of analogy, a fundamental alignment mechanism in the evolution of the verbal system, that can play a role within a paradigm or a set of paradigms of the same verb, in particular with the extension of one of the verbal stems to the detriment of the other, such as the aim stem - in all the tenses and in P4/P5 of the present tense of the verb aimer (to love), Old French amer. Moreover, in the 16th and 17th centuries, when there was still a lot of hesitation, grammarians and Remarqueurs played a role as descriptors and prescriptors of the language, rôle that we have tried to define. To carry out this study, we compiled a corpus of 27 verbs representing several types of verbal alternation, such as treuve/trouvons (to find) and aime/amons (to love), which yielded 312,250 raw occurrences in context in the Frantext corpus, from Old French to 1799. The verbs were grouped according to their initial alternation for a systematic study of frequencies and other parameters, in order to understand why verbs with identical alternations in Old French did not have the same outcome in modern French. We also tried to determine the factors favouring the maintenance of the verbal alternation or, on the contrary, the factors favouring the extension of one of the two verbal stems in the present tense. Finally, we observed several parameters may have played a part in the transformations and standardisation of verbal paradigms in the present tense: the frequency of use of a form, verbal stem or paradigm, whether a verb belongs to a morphological family, the intra and interparadigmatic analogy, and linguistic prescription in the 16th and 17th centuries. A hierarchy of criteria has been proposed

Testo completoThe present thesis aims to explore the reflexes of the Proto-Indo-European verbal suffix * ye/o in the Italic languages (among them Latin, Faliscan, Sabellic, Venetic) and to set up a relative chronology of sound laws and morphological processes involved, in order to track down the prehistory of the Italic verbal system. It is argued that the so-called “semithematic” type can be derived from PIE thematic * ye/o presents. The study examines the split into a capio type and an audio type, due to two main factors depending on the phonological shape of the root : Sievers’ law and the “Niedermann effect”, a development according to which roots ending with a sonant regularly yielded verbs belonging to the fourth conjugation. A new analysis of the circumstances surrounding Thurneysen’s law and the loss of intervocalic yod contributes to explaining some morphological oddities of Italic verbs (Latin fier?, Umbrian FUIEST, Venetic +HOREIONTE). The philological problems raised by several Sabellic inscriptions are treated, and the South Picene evidence is subjected to close scrutiny

Testo completoThe manifold use of “the present” in French has aroused our interest and pushed us to explore this question in other languages; namely, Moroccan Arabic and Tamazight Berber. We wonder about the existence and the expression of this phenomenon in these two languages whose verbal systems rely on an opposition which is purely aspectual. We have found that the notion of the current present is not merely expressed, in either studied languages by a single verbal form; instead, by many verbal forms. We have wondered about the parameters which interfere in the choice of this or that form as well as we have displayed that in Berber Tamazight and in Moroccan Arabic the form of “the present” depends on the type of the process and the selected phase (of the process) at once. Apparently, the uses of the verbal forms which participate to the expression of “the present” are alike in the three languages under study. However, the indicative present in French seems polysemous, inasmuch as it expresses the ”present” with the four forms of the process. Here, Moroccan Arabic and Berber Tamazight have recourse to their basic verbal forms to express this notion. In this study, we have worked on the authentic oral data which allowed us not only to observe the different uses of the ”present” form which are in a direct relation with the moment of the speech, but to determine the parameters which make this uttered form itself in the current able to refer to the non-current. We would like at the same time, during this study, to depict the image of Moroccan Arabic and spoken Berber Tamazight currently in a city in the Central France, Orleans. Since the signature of the European Charter for Regional and Minority Languages in 1999, these two languages have appeared among “non territorial France languages”

Testo completoThe discovery of the manuscript De l’essence double du langage [The double essence of language] (which appeared in the Écrits de linguistique générale [Writings in General Linguistics] in 2002) gave rise to a renewed interest in Ferdinand de Saussure and, above all, allowed for a revaluation of his scientific project. As part of this movement, a new interpretation of his project has been developed by Simon Bouquet: this involves bringing together the fields of linguistics of both langue and parole within a Galilean epistemology that radicalises the principle of differentiality. The first section of this thesis is dedicated to a critical presentation of Bouquet’s model – known as the linguistique néosaussurienne de l’interprétation. The second section explores the largely understudied nature of the principle of differentiality in the science of language. The way in which grammar books treat the theory of the present indicative in French is examined as a case in point. It is posited that the old grammar books (dating from the 16th to the 19th century), which preceded the diffusion of the principle of differentiality with the ‘Cours de linguistique générale’; and modern grammar books, coming after the Cours; are enmeshed within the paradox of a theoretical continuity conjugated with the absence of a satisfying and shared theory; and it is argued that this paradox conforms exactly with that which these grammar books reject de facto as the Saussurean principle of differentiality. The conclusion, in the form of an opening, outlines the possibility of a grammar which describes, from the perspective of language, the semantic system of the French present tense; as well as the laws of correlation postulated by a neosaussurean linguistics; to give an explanation of the double nature of language which is at once both langue and parole

Testo completoThe present work focuses on teacher’s voice for its implication in the transmission of the oral message, especially when it is produced in a foreign language. We studied the factors that influence the production of the teacher’s voice, in class. In this order, we tried to define the factors from the teacher’s past, as innate or acquired attitudes and performances. Secondarily, we analysed the situational factors as teacher’s intentions communications in situation. This research insists on the way that intonation is a skill, likely to act on the level of foreign language learners. Therefore, the issue is essentially within the framework of research in language didactics at the Sorbonne Nouvelle. The theories, on which we base, relate to phonetics, the psychology and social psychology. The empirical research is based on two types of corpus: the first consists of oral and written produced by a number of Lebanese’s teachers. The second is a transcribed sound corpus, which is in an extract of courses registered in situation given by a Lebanese teacher. Finally, in proposing a research on the role of intonation parameters in the transmission of knowledge, this research hopes to contribute to research in language didactics and pedagogy in general

Testo completoDeriving from the observation of an accentuated lack of learning of French as a Foreign Language in a secondary school in Greece, this research attempts to question the relation between the notions of “learner” in the official curriculum and the “real student”. Disciplinary discourse claiming modernisation of the educational system through a communicative doctrine construes the “learner” in generic terms as supposedly bearing a functional relationship with language, being an active participant and an actor in every communication situation. On the other hand, the “real student” can be comprehended through the observation of his acting and interacting with the institution and by listening to his words, those of a simulacrum of a student faltering in the margins of learning. In such a context, the process of teaching and learning French acquires particular significations. Due to its “foreignness”, the French language potentially constitutes a symbolic space for someone being a student, a student participating in the learning process through the emergence of his subjectivity in speech. On the condition that the teacher considers the student beyond the curriculum and by being involved himself as a subject in forming relations between the disciplinary discourse and classroom activities. To accept and to express the passage between the negativity of the student's learning and the emergence of a real learner marks the student’s consideration as being a subject in the process of teaching

Testo completoThis research deals with –ing participle clauses in contemporary English. It is based on a corpus totalling over 1,700 participle clauses collected from novels and newspaper articles, and it also relies on data from electronic corpora – the British National Corpus and the Corpus of Contemporary American English. The main characteristic of –ing participle clauses is that they lack an explicit syntactic and semantic link to their superordinate clause: to shed light on the linguistic phenomena accounting for this specificity, the research establishes a detailed typology of –ing clauses, studies their relationship to their subjects, investigates the specific nature of their incidence and predication, and provides a detailed analysis of their semantic indeterminacy. It shows that their basic semantic value is one of attendant circumstance – a mere link between two events or states that form a unit in the speaker’s mind. The characteristics of the co- and context may alter this basic value to give the clause its final (adjectival or adverbial) meaning. The research puts forward hypotheses to account for the syntactic and semantic characteristics of –ing participle clauses within the framework of Gustave Guillaume’s psychosystematic theory: it shows the syntactic and semantic behaviour of –ing clauses can be directly traced back to the meaning of the –ing participle, which, it is hypothesised, has an internal incidence and expresses simultaneity and imperfectivity in all of its uses
Guiga, Ahlem. "Étude comparative, diachronique et synchronique du futur en italien, napolitain et français". Thesis, Aix-Marseille, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012AIXM3117.
Testo completoOur research focuses on the deep understanding of the Italian chronogenesis, and within it, of the expression of future, based on the theoretical and methodological principles of G. Guillaume. Our comparative study combines diachronic and synchronic approaches. We study the evolution of the expression of future from former Italian to contemporary Italian literature through a first corpus built from the original text of the Decameron of G. Boccaccio, its contemporary translation proposed by A. Busi and its French translation by J. Bourciez. We compare the expression of future in three Italian (by authors from the Veneto and Sicily) and French graphic novels, with a second series of corpus extrapolated from the transcripts of these comics. We observe, on one hand, the differences between French and Italian contemporary standards, and on the other hand, the achievements of the Italian standard according to its substrates' regional influence. With a third corpus, we study the expression of future by comparing Neapolitan songs texts from the XIXth to the XXth century, with their translations in Italian and French. Our comparison of the various solutions for future covers, from West to East, the western Romania (standard French, Veneto regional Italian), and the central position of the Italian literary standard from Florentine, Eastern Romania (Sicilian regional Italian, Neapolitan). We study the distribution of future's morphological forms (synthetic, analytic), uses (temporal, modal) and alternative expression of future (other times, adverbial phrase of time). We discuss the concepts of aspect, accomplished and unaccomplished, perfective and imperfective and study their distribution in the morphosyntactic forms of future's expression

Testo completoBahrain is a small island in the Arabo-Persian Gulf striving to stay in the race on international level so as to have the right and the feeling to exist. To do so, both the government and the population devote a lot of energy, creativity and innovation. A large-scale linguistic reform promoting French in a non-francophone country having no historical bind with France is a challenge in itself. Never done before, this reform sets a precedent in the Middle-East but also on a worldwide scale since very few experiments of this kind have been tried and never in such a context. Having been implemented for five years, can one refer to it as successful ? The sociocultural, historical, geographical, economical and political features of the Bahraini people make them a case apart which has become a case study for any other attempt to introduce the French language in a non-francophone country or region. To understand the subtleties and the stakes of such a reform, it is essential in a first phase to interpret, to decipher the past of Bahrain and its people so as to grasp the characteristics that make it possible for the population to support the reform. The next goal consists in analysing the intrinsic perspicacity of this reform and its inherent features so as to contemplate its implementation in other places
Teixeira, Ribeiro Marie Rosalie. "Présence luso-américaine aux Etats-Unis : un problème de visibilité". Paris 4, 1998. http://www.theses.fr/1998PA040040.
Testo completoThis thesis deals with the presence of the Luso-American community, that is to say the people with a Portuguese origin in the united states and with the issue of their visibility, or their invisibility in the society. After having analyzed the reasons and the consequences of the immigration of the Portuguese and cap-Verdean people to precise and traditional regions like New England, California or Hawaii, we discussed how this ethnic minority, so diverse in itself, has evolved. Through our analyses and field research on the life of the Luso-Americans and cape-Verdean-Americans - those are the terms used to describe and designate them - we can figure out the visibility degree of this group of people. This visibility is witnessed in the cultural elements which belong only to them, and which they have kept and which they display with some pride. We also studied the economic and political role, as well as the cultural expressions of these people living in the English-speaking world. Furthermore, by focusing on the interethnic relations between this language minority and the American majority, as well as the other ethnic groups, we were able to describe the problems faced by the Luso-Americans both inside and outside their community of origin. The latter issue tells us about the capacity of the Portuguese and cape-Verdean people to open themselves or not towards the others or, on the contrary, to marginalize themselves into cultural ghettos. Added to this danger and our central issue about their visibility or invisibility is the essential problem of the quest for an identity by immigrants who have been living in America for a long time, all the more so by their descendants, who very often waver between two cultural and ethnic origins. Thus, the fact of claiming that they belong to this or that ethnic or national group has some consequences on the daily life of this community, which we intend to describe

Testo completoThe Homeric and Virgilian epics, as well as the Chanson de Roland are full of tenseswitching, the use of which might seem capricious to the modern reader. It is in fact much better understood when bodies’ presence is taken into account — these bodies being the bard’s one as well as the audience’s. Postures, gestures, moves, eyes, breath, music are joint partners to tenseswitching, so that tenses really dance in epics. This study is firstly about how each one of the main narrative tenses dances in Homer and the Roland, and also in the Æneid. Then it studies the way tenses dance in each of the small pieces we find in the classical epics as well as in the Roland : the laisses

Testo completoThis work aims to study the modes of presence of the subject and the degree of subjectivity in the discourses of travel concerning the city of Istanbul. We propose to address the issue of the presence in the discourse of travel by analyzing three types of discourse (the travel texts, travel notebooks and tourist guides) with the help of semiotics of the enunciation, the semiotics of presence and visual semiotics. The body as a enunciating subject can be studied in the perspective of enunciation and as a perceiving subject can be analyzed in the line of perception. Based on this dual function of the body, we propose to study the marks of subjectivity in the discourses of travel through the enunciating subject and the perceiving subject. In this work, we will observe the enunciation styles which specify the place of the enunciating subject, the different roles and input modes of the enunciator as an observer. In addition, we will examine the forms of presence of the "city", in other words, the participation of the sensoriality (subject) to the representational construction of space (object). Aside from enunciation strategies, the text-image relation, the contribution of different techniques of representation (photography, drawing, map) to the establishment of meaning will be considered in this work. These analysis concerning the enunciation, the perception, the figurativity and polysemiotic structure allow us to define the characteristics of these types of discourse

Testo completoThis doctoral thesis explores virtual reality as a digital environment for language learning, specifically for French or German as a foreign language. The study examines how immersion and interaction in virtual reality generate a sense of presence in the virtual environment and thus contribute to a contextualization of the learning situation.Approximately one hundred pupils from French and German secondary schools tested three immersive environments of the European project EVEIL-3D. After using a foreign language in an immersive serious game, pupils were surveyed on their virtual reality experience. Results show the importance of subjectivity of the experience. This research additionally investigates speaking in the foreign language, language usage strategies, interactivity, physical engagement and how to support the pupils during immersion. Finally, it points out both the drawbacks and opportunities of using virtual reality as a digital environment for language learning

Testo completoOn the one hand, together with the global disruptions following the end of the bi-polar political system and on the other hand and in close correlation with the considerable extension of the international exchanges, the unprecedented development of the means of communication and the economic globalization (obviously with regard to the cultural field), the end of the 20th century has launched a new deal in international cultural relations which now take on a major meaning which has remained unprecedented. In this new global context, the international cultural relations have set themselves new goals: they now not only aim at the circulation of the national culture towards the international community but also appear as an urgent even vital resistance to the dangerous impact of globalization, thanks to the development of intercultural dialogue and the affirmation of the different cultures.Under the influence of these new objectives, the world states have been forced to review their conception of international cultural policies and improve their national cultural diplomacy. This thesis mainly deals with the international cultural policies of France and Russia and its author focuses on Franco-Russian intergovernmental cultural relations from 1991 until 2004. The study of the renewal of the bilateral cultural relations after the collapse of the Soviet Union aims at answering three sets of questions, from a national perspective but also on bilateral and multilateral relations (Russo-European that is)• What place have the international cultural policies of France and Russia held in the new national conception of foreign affairs in France and Russia? What are the objectives and priorities of France and Russia as regards to international cultural relations? And what are the instruments used by France and Russia for their achievement in the current global context?• What place have cultural bilateral relations taken respectively in the conception of the international cultural policies of both countries? What are the goals and means used in the cultural bilateral cooperation? What are the results of the renewal of bilateral cultural relations? And finally, how can we characterize the contemporary Franco-Russian cultural relations?• What is at stake in the Franco-Russian cultural relations with a view to the evolution of the relation between Russia and the extended European Union? And what are the potential perspectives in their development?
