Testo completoThe present tense can be studied according to a new approach, taking both the formal apparatus and the modal point of view into account, especially when the temporal reference is not relevant. So in some written utterances, which do not have any oral equivalent and are not communication-oriented, the present tense does not refer to any specific situation, whether simultaneous to the speech act or not. It allows, through a co-text and a context, both involved in this "dis-actualization", to refer to a "prototypical" event, not in the semantic sense of the word but in the sense of a "model" : this event, expressed in the present tense, becomes "dis-actualized", unreal but exemplary; it can be realized in many different ways (we can use the locution "paradigmatic reference"). That is why we refer to it as a "prototyping" modality of the present tense, for example in the philosophical examples, legal texts and narrative manuscripts

Testo completoAfter a brief introduction to machine translation, with a few definitions relating to this domain, the author studies the treatment of time and aspect in some of the existing m. T. Systems. A whole section is devoted to the european pr0ject "eurotra", with a critical approach. The main partof the thesis consists of a thorough examination of the translations of the french "present" tense into english : 1) what are the various possible translations (study of a corpus)? 2) what has to be taken into account in order to infer the value of the present and hence translate it (referential interpretation, status of the process, noun determination, lexical aspect), 3) what are the rules that can be drawn for the automatic translation of these verbal forms?

Testo completoThis thesis in Linguistics is part of a study of historical verbal morphology and examines the evolution of alternation of verbal stems in the French present tense. The overall framework is that of a linguistic study combining a description of the French verbal system and the history of representations of French language, in a long diachrony context, as certain changes are very old, and others are the result of the medieval period, while some others date from the modern period. We described the functioning of verbal paradigms in synchrony and diachrony, while defining the fundamental concepts used. We thus redefinied the notion of ‘regular verb’ and ‘irregular verb’ from a historical point of view. The alternation of verbal stems and the phonological variation of the verbal stem have been distinguished. We analysed the concept of analogy, a fundamental alignment mechanism in the evolution of the verbal system, that can play a role within a paradigm or a set of paradigms of the same verb, in particular with the extension of one of the verbal stems to the detriment of the other, such as the aim stem - in all the tenses and in P4/P5 of the present tense of the verb aimer (to love), Old French amer. Moreover, in the 16th and 17th centuries, when there was still a lot of hesitation, grammarians and Remarqueurs played a role as descriptors and prescriptors of the language, rôle that we have tried to define. To carry out this study, we compiled a corpus of 27 verbs representing several types of verbal alternation, such as treuve/trouvons (to find) and aime/amons (to love), which yielded 312,250 raw occurrences in context in the Frantext corpus, from Old French to 1799. The verbs were grouped according to their initial alternation for a systematic study of frequencies and other parameters, in order to understand why verbs with identical alternations in Old French did not have the same outcome in modern French. We also tried to determine the factors favouring the maintenance of the verbal alternation or, on the contrary, the factors favouring the extension of one of the two verbal stems in the present tense. Finally, we observed several parameters may have played a part in the transformations and standardisation of verbal paradigms in the present tense: the frequency of use of a form, verbal stem or paradigm, whether a verb belongs to a morphological family, the intra and interparadigmatic analogy, and linguistic prescription in the 16th and 17th centuries. A hierarchy of criteria has been proposed

Testo completoThe present thesis aims to explore the reflexes of the Proto-Indo-European verbal suffix * ye/o in the Italic languages (among them Latin, Faliscan, Sabellic, Venetic) and to set up a relative chronology of sound laws and morphological processes involved, in order to track down the prehistory of the Italic verbal system. It is argued that the so-called “semithematic” type can be derived from PIE thematic * ye/o presents. The study examines the split into a capio type and an audio type, due to two main factors depending on the phonological shape of the root : Sievers’ law and the “Niedermann effect”, a development according to which roots ending with a sonant regularly yielded verbs belonging to the fourth conjugation. A new analysis of the circumstances surrounding Thurneysen’s law and the loss of intervocalic yod contributes to explaining some morphological oddities of Italic verbs (Latin fier?, Umbrian FUIEST, Venetic +HOREIONTE). The philological problems raised by several Sabellic inscriptions are treated, and the South Picene evidence is subjected to close scrutiny

Testo completoThe manifold use of “the present” in French has aroused our interest and pushed us to explore this question in other languages; namely, Moroccan Arabic and Tamazight Berber. We wonder about the existence and the expression of this phenomenon in these two languages whose verbal systems rely on an opposition which is purely aspectual. We have found that the notion of the current present is not merely expressed, in either studied languages by a single verbal form; instead, by many verbal forms. We have wondered about the parameters which interfere in the choice of this or that form as well as we have displayed that in Berber Tamazight and in Moroccan Arabic the form of “the present” depends on the type of the process and the selected phase (of the process) at once. Apparently, the uses of the verbal forms which participate to the expression of “the present” are alike in the three languages under study. However, the indicative present in French seems polysemous, inasmuch as it expresses the ”present” with the four forms of the process. Here, Moroccan Arabic and Berber Tamazight have recourse to their basic verbal forms to express this notion. In this study, we have worked on the authentic oral data which allowed us not only to observe the different uses of the ”present” form which are in a direct relation with the moment of the speech, but to determine the parameters which make this uttered form itself in the current able to refer to the non-current. We would like at the same time, during this study, to depict the image of Moroccan Arabic and spoken Berber Tamazight currently in a city in the Central France, Orleans. Since the signature of the European Charter for Regional and Minority Languages in 1999, these two languages have appeared among “non territorial France languages”

Testo completoThe discovery of the manuscript De l’essence double du langage [The double essence of language] (which appeared in the Écrits de linguistique générale [Writings in General Linguistics] in 2002) gave rise to a renewed interest in Ferdinand de Saussure and, above all, allowed for a revaluation of his scientific project. As part of this movement, a new interpretation of his project has been developed by Simon Bouquet: this involves bringing together the fields of linguistics of both langue and parole within a Galilean epistemology that radicalises the principle of differentiality. The first section of this thesis is dedicated to a critical presentation of Bouquet’s model – known as the linguistique néosaussurienne de l’interprétation. The second section explores the largely understudied nature of the principle of differentiality in the science of language. The way in which grammar books treat the theory of the present indicative in French is examined as a case in point. It is posited that the old grammar books (dating from the 16th to the 19th century), which preceded the diffusion of the principle of differentiality with the ‘Cours de linguistique générale’; and modern grammar books, coming after the Cours; are enmeshed within the paradox of a theoretical continuity conjugated with the absence of a satisfying and shared theory; and it is argued that this paradox conforms exactly with that which these grammar books reject de facto as the Saussurean principle of differentiality. The conclusion, in the form of an opening, outlines the possibility of a grammar which describes, from the perspective of language, the semantic system of the French present tense; as well as the laws of correlation postulated by a neosaussurean linguistics; to give an explanation of the double nature of language which is at once both langue and parole

Testo completoThe present work focuses on teacher’s voice for its implication in the transmission of the oral message, especially when it is produced in a foreign language. We studied the factors that influence the production of the teacher’s voice, in class. In this order, we tried to define the factors from the teacher’s past, as innate or acquired attitudes and performances. Secondarily, we analysed the situational factors as teacher’s intentions communications in situation. This research insists on the way that intonation is a skill, likely to act on the level of foreign language learners. Therefore, the issue is essentially within the framework of research in language didactics at the Sorbonne Nouvelle. The theories, on which we base, relate to phonetics, the psychology and social psychology. The empirical research is based on two types of corpus: the first consists of oral and written produced by a number of Lebanese’s teachers. The second is a transcribed sound corpus, which is in an extract of courses registered in situation given by a Lebanese teacher. Finally, in proposing a research on the role of intonation parameters in the transmission of knowledge, this research hopes to contribute to research in language didactics and pedagogy in general

Testo completoDeriving from the observation of an accentuated lack of learning of French as a Foreign Language in a secondary school in Greece, this research attempts to question the relation between the notions of “learner” in the official curriculum and the “real student”. Disciplinary discourse claiming modernisation of the educational system through a communicative doctrine construes the “learner” in generic terms as supposedly bearing a functional relationship with language, being an active participant and an actor in every communication situation. On the other hand, the “real student” can be comprehended through the observation of his acting and interacting with the institution and by listening to his words, those of a simulacrum of a student faltering in the margins of learning. In such a context, the process of teaching and learning French acquires particular significations. Due to its “foreignness”, the French language potentially constitutes a symbolic space for someone being a student, a student participating in the learning process through the emergence of his subjectivity in speech. On the condition that the teacher considers the student beyond the curriculum and by being involved himself as a subject in forming relations between the disciplinary discourse and classroom activities. To accept and to express the passage between the negativity of the student's learning and the emergence of a real learner marks the student’s consideration as being a subject in the process of teaching
