Testo completoWith the improvement of computation power necessary for advanced applications of Machine Learning (ML), Network Fault Prediction (NFP) experiences a renewed scientific interest. The ability to predict network equipment failure is increasingly identified as an effective means to improve network reliability. This predictive capability can be used, to mitigate or to enact predictive maintenance on incoming network failures. This could contribute to establishing zero-failure networks and allow safety-critical applications to run over higher dimension and heterogeneous networks. In this PhD thesis, we propose to contribute to the NFP field by focusing on network alarm prediction. First, we present a comprehensive survey on NFP using Machine Learning (ML) methods entirely dedicated to telecommunication networks, and determine new directions for research in the field. Second, we propose and study a set of Machine Learning performance metrics (maintenance cost reduction and Quality of Service improvement) adapted to NFP in the context of network maintenance. Third, we describe the complete data processing architecture, including the network and software infrastructure, and the necessary data preprocessing pipeline that was implemented at SPIE ICS, Networks and Systems Integrator. We also describe the alarm or failure prediction problem model precisely. Fourth, we establish a benchmark of the different ML solutions applied to our dataset. We consider Decision Tree-based methods, Multi-Layer Perceptron and Support Vector Machines. We test the generalization of performance prediction across equipment types as well as normal ML generalization of the proposed models and parameters. Then, we apply sequential - Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) - ML architectures with success on our sequential SNMP dataset. Finally, we study the impact of the definition of the prediction horizon (and associated arbitrary timeframes) on the ML model prediction performance

Testo completoWe describe a Malaria Early Warning System (MEWS) using various epidemic thresholds and a forecasting component with the support of recent technologies to improve the performance of a sentinel MEWS. Malaria-related data from sentinel sites collected by Short Message Service are automatically stored in a database hosted on a server at Institut Pasteur de Madagascar. Concomitantly our system routinely and automatically acquires site specific satellite weather data related to changes in malaria prevalence such as temperature, rainfall and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). A Malaria Control Intervention data base has also been. This system has already demonstrated its ability to detect a malaria outbreak in southeastern part of Madagascar in 2014. In a second time, we conducted a study to assess the relationship between the effectiveness of mass campaign of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLIN) over time and malaria outbreaks identified in Madagascar from 2009 to 2015 through the Sentinel surveillance system. This study showed that the difference between efficacy and effectiveness may result in gaps in service coverage during the subsequent years contributing to malaria rebound well before the replacement of the LLINs and highlights the need of continuous distribution mechanism of LLINs.This work aims to maximize the usefulness of a sentinel surveillance system to predict and detect epidemics in limited-resource environments, to guide any changes in the orientation of malaria control programs and to provide practical examples and suggestions for use in other systems or settings

Testo completoThe assistance dog for persons with epilepsy has been the subject of few studies. However, several anecdotes report detection and even prediction skills of dogs, whether trained or companion dogs. Through a literature review, it appeared that there is a significant lack of data. In addition, the few existing data are unreliable (i.e. from retrospective questionnaires mostly) and do not allow to conclude on the real existence of these abilities, nor on their functioning, the adequate training, the person likely to benefit from them or the dog profile presenting them. This research aims to explore the phenomenon of seizure-dog in order to significantly supplement current knowledge. Our results show that there does not seem to be a specific alert dog profile, apart from behavioural characteristics. Similarly, characteristics dependent on the person or epilepsy do not seem to affect the alerting ability of dogs. This is reinforced by the fact that there seems to be an olfactory signature of epilepsy, discriminated in other contexts through i) trained dogs, ii) companion dogs and iii) SIFT-MS. Thus, we show that there is a smell associated with epilepsy, whatever the cause or type. Data from chemical analyses also show that this odour is present before the seizure, which is in line with the reported predictive abilities of dogs and paves the way for effective systems for predicting epileptic seizures. In addition, our results suggest an improvement in the person's quality of life after obtaining an assistance dog. Finally, we propose a methodological development aimed, ultimately, at evaluating in videoelectroencephalography the ability of dogs to alert people to epileptic seizures, on the basis of records in a familiar environment. In the end, these studies provide original results that allow to rediscover epilepsy from reported observations of dogs and to clarify various central aspects related to assistance dogs for people with epilepsy
