Abstract (sommario):
Integrated navigation using multiple Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) is beneficial to increase the number of observable satellites, alleviate the effects of systematic errors and improve the accuracy of positioning, navigation and timing (PNT). When multiple constellations and multiple frequency measurements are employed, the functional and stochastic models as well as the estimation principle for PNT may be different. Therefore, the commonly used definition of “dilution of precision (DOP)” based on the least squares (LS) estimation and unified functional and stochastic models will be not applicable anymore. In this paper, three types of generalised DOPs are defined. The first type of generalised DOP is based on the error influence function (IF) of pseudo-ranges that reflects the geometry strength of the measurements, error magnitude and the estimation risk criteria. When the least squares estimation is used, the first type of generalised DOP is identical to the one commonly used. In order to define the first type of generalised DOP, an IF of signal–in-space (SIS) errors on the parameter estimates of PNT is derived. The second type of generalised DOP is defined based on the functional model with additional systematic parameters induced by the compatibility and interoperability problems among different GNSS systems. The third type of generalised DOP is defined based on Bayesian estimation in which the a priori information of the model parameters is taken into account. This is suitable for evaluating the precision of kinematic positioning or navigation. Different types of generalised DOPs are suitable for different PNT scenarios and an example for the calculation of these DOPs for multi-GNSS systems including GPS, GLONASS, Compass and Galileo is given. New observation equations of Compass and GLONASS that may contain additional parameters for interoperability are specifically investigated. It shows that if the interoperability of multi-GNSS is not fulfilled, the increased number of satellites will not significantly reduce the generalised DOP value. Furthermore, the outlying measurements will not change the original DOP, but will change the first type of generalised DOP which includes a robust error IF. A priori information of the model parameters will also reduce the DOP.

Abstract (sommario):
11064 Background: Positron emission tomography (PET) using the catecholamine precursor 6-[F-18]fluoro-L-dihydroxyphenylalanine (18F-DOPA) has emerged as promising technique to localize tumors with catecholamine excess. This study investigated the sensitivity of 18F-DOPA PET, compared to 123I-metaiodobenzylguanidine (123I-MIBG) scintigraphy and computer tomography (CT)/ magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with catecholamine excess. Methods: In a single center prospective study 18F-DOPA PET was compared to 123I-MIBG and CT/MRI in patients with catecholamine excess. The performance of each imaging modality was analyzed for individual patients and individual lesions. 18F-DOPA PET, 123I-MIBG, and CT/MRI were compared using a composite reference standard derived from all available imaging, clinical and histological information. Sensitivities were calculated and discordance between imaging techniques was compared. 18F-DOPA PET uptake was measured to determine whole body metabolic burden. Correlations between 18F-DOPA PET imaging and biochemical data were evaluated. Results: 48 patients were included. The tumor localization was found in 45 patients, 43 with 18F-DOPA PET, 31 with 123I-MIBG and 32 with CT/MRI, resulting with surgery in final diagnosis of pheochromocytoma in 40, adrenal hyperplasia in 2, paraganglioma in 2, ganglioneuroma in 1 and 3 unknown (as yet no lesion detected). Per patient based analysis showed sensitivities for 18F-DOPA PET, 123I-MIBG and CT/MRI of 90, 65 and 67% (P<.01 18F-DOPA PET vs 123I-MIBG, P<.01 18F-DOPA PET vs CT/MRI, P=1.0 123I-MIBG vs CT/MRI). Corresponding sensitivities in the lesion based analysis were 73, 48 and 44%, respectively (P<.001 for both 18F-DOPA PET vs 123I-MIBG and vs CT/MRI, P=.51 123I-MIBG vs CT/MRI). The 8F-DOPA PET+CT/MRI combination was superior to 123I-MIBG+CT/MRI (93 vs 76%, P<.001) Whole body metabolic burden measured with 18F-DOPA PET correlated with plasma free normetanephrine (r=.82) and 24h urinary total normetanephrine (r=.84) and metanephrine (r=.57). Conclusions: The sensitivity of 18F-DOPA PET to localize tumors with catecholamine excess is superior to either 123I-MIBG scintigraphy or CT/MRI. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose: The aims of the present study were to: 1- critically assess the utility of L-3,4- dihydroxy-6-18Ffluoro-phenyl-alanine (18F-DOPA) and O-(2-18F-fluoroethyl)-L-tyrosine (18F-FET) Positron Emission Tomography (PET)/Computed Tomography (CT) in patients with high grade glioma (HGG) and 2- describe the results of 18F-DOPA and 18F-FET PET/CT in a case series of patients with recurrent HGG. Methods: We searched for studies using the following databases: PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus. The search terms were: glioma OR brain neoplasm and DOPA OR DOPA PET OR DOPA PET/CT and FET OR FET PET OR FET PET/CT. From a mono-institutional database, we retrospectively analyzed the 18F-DOPA and 18F-FET PET/CT of 29 patients (age: 56 ± 12 years) with suspicious for recurrent HGG. All patients underwent 18F-DOPA or 18F-FET PET/CT for a multidisciplinary decision. The final definition of recurrence was made by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and/or multidisciplinary decision, mainly based on the clinical data. Results: Fifty-one articles were found, of which 49 were discarded, therefore 2 studies were finally selected. In both the studies, 18F-DOPA and 18F-FET as exchangeable in clinical practice particularly for HGG patients. From our institutional experience, in 29 patients, we found that sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of 18F-DOPA PET/CT in HGG were 100% (95% confidence interval- 95%CI - 81-100%), 63% (95%CI: 39-82%) and 62% (95%CI: 39-81%), respectively. 18F-FET PET/CT was true positive in 4 and true negative in 4 patients. Sensitivity, specificity and accuracy for 18F-FET PET/CT in HGG were 100%. Conclusion: 18F-DOPA and 18F-FET PET/CT have a similar diagnostic accuracy in patients with recurrent HGG. However, 18F-DOPA PET/CT could be affected by inflammation conditions (false positive) that can alter the final results. Large comparative trials are warranted in order to better understand the utility of 18F-DOPA or 18F-FET PET/CT in patients with HGG.

Abstract (sommario):
2002 Background: Elderly patients with glioblastoma have a poor prognosis with phase III trials reporting median overall survival (OS) and global time to deterioration of 6–9 and 1.2 months respectively. 18F-DOPA (3,4-dihydroxy-6-[18F]-fluoro-L-phenylalanine) positron emission tomography (PET) is sensitive and specific for identifying regions of high density and biologically aggressive glioblastoma. Proton beam therapy (PBT) can spare more healthy tissue that may improve quality of life for this patient population. With improved targeting of disease along with dosimetric advantages of PBT, this phase II trial tested whether hypofractionated PBT can offer both improved survival and quality of life. Methods: Patients with newly diagnosed glioblastoma aged ≥65 years without contraindications to 18F-DOPA were eligible. Target volumes were defined by PET (tumor/normal brain SUV ≥2.0) and MRI areas of contrast enhancement including surgical cavity. Patients received dose escalated hypofractionated PBT of 35-40 GyE to PET/MRI over 5-10 treatments with 10 mm margin. Patients received concurrent/adjuvant temozolomide. With an alpha of 0.1, 18 of 39 patients would be required to be alive at 12 months for the study to be considered a success. Kaplan-Meier/Cox regression analysis was performed for progression free survival (PFS) and OS. Toxicities were evaluated with CTCAE v4.0. Patients completed EORTC BN20, QLQ-C30, and MMSE questionnaires. Time to deterioration, defined as a 10-point decrease in the score of the function domain or 10-point increase in score of symptom domain, was evaluated. Results: Between 5/2019-6/2021, 43 patients were enrolled, with 4 patients withdrawing due to progression/insurance denial prior to beginning protocol therapy. The median age was 70.2 yrs. and median follow-up was 12.5 months. MGMT methylation was present in 13 (33%). Tumors were multifocal in 10 (26%) and unifocal in 29 (74%). The primary endpoint was met with median PFS/OS was 6.5/12.9 months for all patients and for MGMT methylated patients 11.9/29.8 months respectively. Grade 3 baseline adjusted treatment related adverse events included 1 (3%) confusion, 2 (5%) fatigue, and 1 (3%) seizure. There were no grade 4/5 events. Multivariate analysis revealed MGMT unmethylated, ECOG 2 and biopsy only patients had worse survival. PET volume was more predictive than MRI volume for OS with PET volume>26 cc having a hazard ratio of 3.7. The median time to global deterioration per QLC-C30 was 6.3 months. Conclusions: This phase II trial incorporating 18F-DOPA PET-guided dose escalated hypofractionated proton beam treatment for elderly patients with glioblastoma met its primary endpoint for improved OS and patient reported quality of life compared to historical controls. Further investigation is warranted. Clinical trial information: NCT03778294 .

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Context and Objective: Fluorine-18-l-dihydroxyphenylalanine (18F-DOPA) positron emission tomography (PET) is a promising method in localizing neuroendocrine tumors. Recently, it has been shown to differentiate focal forms of congenital hyperinsulinism of infancy. The current study was set up to determine the potential of 18F-DOPA PET in identifying the insulin-secreting tumors or β-cell hyperplasia of the pancreas in adults. Patients and Methods: We prospectively studied 10 patients with confirmed hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia and presumed insulin-secreting tumor using 18F-DOPA PET. Anatomical imaging was performed with computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). All patients were operated on, and histological verification was available in each case. Semiquantitative PET findings in the pancreas using standardized uptake values were compared to standardized uptake values of seven consecutive patients with nonpancreatic neuroendocrine tumors. Results: By visual inspection of 18F-DOPA PET images, it was possible in nine of 10 patients to localize the pancreatic lesion, subsequently confirmed by histological analysis. 18F-DOPA uptake was enhanced in six of seven solid insulinomas and in the malignant insulinoma and its hepatic metastasis. Two patients with β-cell hyperplasia showed increased focal uptake of 18F-DOPA in the affected areas. As compared to CT or MRI, 18F-DOPA PET was more sensitive in localizing diseased pancreatic tissue. Conclusion: 18F-DOPA PET was useful in most patients with insulinoma and negative CT, MRI, and ultrasound results. In agreement with previous findings in infants, preoperative 18F-DOPA imaging seems to be a method of choice for the detection of β-cell hyperplasia in adults. It should be considered for the detection of insulinoma or β-cell hyperplasia in patients with confirmed hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemias when other diagnostic work-up is negative.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract While dose escalation of radiotherapy (DERT) has failed to improve overall survival (OS) or progression-free survival (PFS) for glioblastoma in previous studies, a recent phase II clinical trial utilizing 18F-DOPA-PET-directed DERT demonstrated improved PFS in MGMT-unmethylated patients and OS in MGMT-methylated patients compared to historical controls. This planned secondary analysis sought to determine 1) how 18F-DOPA-PET changes RT volumes beyond standard MRI-planning, 2) which patients benefit most and least from this protocol, 3) which are mostly likely to experience clinically significant radionecrosis after DERT, and 4) patterns of failure after DERT. For 69 evaluable patients, median MRI-defined, PET-defined, and combined low-dose gross tumor volumes (GTV51) were 54 cc (range 9-248), 23 cc (0.4-179), and 62 cc (10-260), respectively. Median MRI-defined, PET-defined, and combined high-dose GTVs (GTV76) were 32 cc (range 4-136), 6 cc (0.1-138), and 34 cc (4-162), respectively. 18F-DOPA-PET resulted in a median volumetric expansion of 13% (0-243%) and 5% (0-217%) from MRI-defined low-dose and high-dose GTV’s, respectively. Central failures ( >95% of recurrence tumor volume) occurred within the 76 Gy, 60 Gy, and 51 Gy isodose lines in 32 (46%), 60 (87%), and 64 (93%) patients, respectively. Recursive partitioning analysis stratified patients by OS and PFS. Patients with 18F-DOPA-PET-defined GTV76 > 7.8cc, MRI-defined GTV76 > 42.7cc, and MGMT promotor-unmethylated tumors had the shortest OS, while patients with smaller PET and MRI-defined tumors had the longest OS (median 10.4 vs. 64.6 months, p< 0.001). Similarly, PFS was worst in patients with 18F-DOPA-PET-defined GTV76 > 2.17 cc who had biopsy only (median PFS 3.2 months, p< 0.001). Patients with 18F-DOPA-PET-defined GTV51 > 50 cc had the highest risk of grade 3+ radionecrosis (p< 0.001). In conclusion, larger 18F-DOPA-PET and MRI-defined tumor volumes were associated with worse outcomes, and 18F-DOPA-PET-directed DERT appears to reduce risk of central recurrence in high-dose volumes.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract BACKGROUND Glioma often recurs and the imaging evaluation whether the tumor has returned after glioma treatment is still challenging. PET/CT is one of the most important techniques to assess the post-treatment of glioma. However, differentiating tumor recurrence (TuR) from treatment effects (TrE) remains difficult. In this study, we aim to retrospectively compare the diagnostic performance of three PET tracers 13N-NH3, 18F-DOPA, and 18F-FDG on PET/CT in differentiating between TuR and TrE in post-treatment glioma patients. METHODS Forty-three patients with MRI-suspected recurrent glioma were included. The maximum and mean standardized uptake value (SUVmax and SUVmean) of the lesion and the lesion-to-normal Gray-matter cortex uptake (L/G) ratio were recorded and the reference standard was verified by surgical histopathology or more than 6 months of follow-up with clinical/radiological. The diagnostic performance was evaluated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. RESULTS 34 patients were confirmed as glioma TuR and 9 patients met the standard of TrE. The median time interval from primary diagnosis surgery to PET/CT was 14.83 months (range, 4.10-62.77 months). The SUVmax of 13N-NH3 and 18F-DOPA PET/CT at the lesions was significantly higher than normal brain tissue (13N-NH3 0.696±0.095 vs 0.486±0.071, 18F-DOPA 0.455±0.079 vs 0.194±0.031, both P< 0.001), while 18F-FDG was not (6.918±0.525 vs 6.356±0.510, P=0.290). TuR showed significantly higher L/G ratios than TrE both in 13N-NH3 and 18F-DOPA PET/CT (13N-NH3, 1.573±0.099 vs 1.025±0.128, P=0.008; 18F-DOPA, 2.729±0.131 vs 1.514±0.141, P< 0.001). The sensitivity, specificity and the area under the curve (AUC) by ROC analysis were 57.7, 100% and 0.803 for 13N-NH3, and 84.6, 100% and 0.938 for 18F-DOPA respectively. CONCLUSIONS PET/CT is a powerful tool to distinguish glioma TuR from TrE, and 18F-DOPA PET/CT has remarkably better differential diagnosis efficacy than 13N-NH3 and 18F-FDG.

Abstract (sommario):
In recent years, titanium dioxide has attracted much attention as a highly stable material with a wide range of applications from white pigment to its applications as a semiconductor or advanced photonic devices. Using recently developed synthetic approaches, the synthesis of atomically well-defined polyoxotitanate (POT, [TixOy(OR)z]) cage molecules can be determined. POTs may be preferred as soluble models of TiO2. Cages doped with a metal M (M-POT) presenting new properties can also be prepared. Two new cages doped with cerium were synthesized by a solvothermal reaction. The cages [Ti28O38(OEt)38CeCl](EtOH)1.4 and [Ti8O7(OEt)21Ce](EtOH) having different solubilities, they will be able to be separated and characterized by 1H NMR and X-ray diffraction. The Fe-doped POTs: [Ti4(OEt)15O(FeCl)] and [FeTi14(OEt)28O14(OH)2] were also synthesized. Then after hydrolysis with or without calcination, materials based on Ce or Fe and TiO2 can be obtained. Emulsions of its materials and with the cerium-doped PVDC polymer were then deposited on a PVC surface. UV absorption and water barrier performance gradually increases with increasing amount of deposited materials. The results are interesting for the use of these materials on the packaging surface of drug tablets, which will increase their expiry date. The Eu-POT cage doped with the Eu(III): Ti2O(OEt)8EuIIICl(EtOH)]2 was also synthesized, then after hydrolysis and calcination, the photoluminescence properties of the obtained material were studied. Finally, an AgITiIV(SC)2(HSC)(CH3CN) complex (SC2- = salicylate) was prepared. After hydrolysis and calcination, the anti-microbial properties of the materials were successfully tested against S. aureus or E. Colis

Abstract (sommario):
Bibliography: pages 202-211.
This study is an investigation into the relationship between word and image, with specific interest into the work of Edgar Allan Poe and Gustave Doré. The twenty six illustrations that Doré executed for Poe's The Raven form the basis of the study. The intention is, through analysis of the illustration, to identify the interplay between word and image and also investigate the influence of late Romantic Gothicism. Part One examines the position and roles of verbal/visual enquiry through illustration and text. A survey of theoretical concepts defining illustration is made. A brief examination of nineteenth century perspectives of illustration, including a survey of technical theories follows. The modern theory of semiotics and its bearing on visual investigation is examined. A model for applying these theories is detailed. Part Two is an in-depth examination of all twenty six of Doré's illustrations of The Raven. An introduction to the illustrations precedes the analysis. Each illustration is detailed individually, with information on the engraver, content and poetical position being given at the start. Numbered inserts are employed to relay detailed information on more general topics relates to the poem and illustrations. Part Three is the conclusion to the work. A brief examination of Doré's involvement with the Gothic is made. Notes on Doré's illustrations for The Raven and their reception and a survey of other illustrators of The Raven, particularly Eduard Manet follows. The comparison between Manet's and Doré's illustrations is investigated. The concluding remarks note how the relationship of word and image between Doré and Poe uncovers new information about both the poem and the illustrations. The importance of Romanticism and the Gothic is also noted. The conclusion states how new light on Doré's work makes these twenty six rarely considered illustrations more noteworthy. The study ends with a series of appendices, the text of The Raven by Poe, the twenty six illustrations by Doré and a bibliography.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis reports a study of familial parkinsonism using diverse scientific tools of both molecular genetics and positron emission tomography functional imaging. Population-based allelic association studies are also described. Molecular and clinical characterisation of the largest British kindred with autosomal Parkinson's disease (PD). Genome wide linkage analysis was used to map the sub-chromosomal location of the disorder as the first step for disease-gene identification. The disease mapped to a 50cM region on the short arm of chromosome 12 overlapping a locus, PARK8 that had just been reported in a Japanese kindred, with an identical phenotype. A detailed clinical study of the British kindred identified unilateral onset of tremor in the leg, prominent foot dystonia and behavioural disorder. Intact cognition and sustained levodopa response, was observed despite lengthy disease duration. Phenotypic study of PARK2 / parkin disease This case series reports a detailed clinical assessment of twenty four cases of early onset parkinsonism with mutations in PARK2, emphasising the clinical features, atypical phenotypes including cervical dystonia, autonomic dysfunction, peripheral neuropathy, pure exercise-induced dystonia and behavioural disorder prior to the onset of parkinsonism. Olfaction was normal compared to a group of parkin negative patients and idiopathic PD cohorts. A number of unaffected relatives who were parkin heterozygotes had psychiatric symptoms and some had extrapyramidal signs that did not fulfil Queen Square Brain Bank criteria. 18F-dopa Positron Emission Tomography in Familial Parkinsonism. Functional imaging in cohorts of patients with parkin (PARK2) and PINK1 (PARK6) mutations identified patterns of nigrostriatal dysfunction that was bilateral and uniform unlike that seen in idiopathic PD. Serial 18F-dopa PET used to assess disease progression in parkin disease over a ten year period, showed that the rate of loss of dopaminergic function was slower compared to idiopathic PD. Asymptomatic parkin and PINK1 heterozygotes also had nigrostriatal dysfunction implying that the gene products exhibited 'haploinsufficiency'. Population based Allelic Association studies. A large study using pathologically proven PD cases and controls failed to replicate a report of positive association between an alpha synuclein polymorphism and PD. In a separate study the angiotensin converting enzyme gene was used as a candidate disease gene. Familial parkinsonism encompasses a heterogeneous group of diseases. Familial 'parkinsonism' was observed in early onset, recessive disease with atypical phenotypes, normal smell and patterns of nigrostriatal dysfunction and rate of progression of functional imaging unlike that seen in idiopathic PD. Functional imaging in asymptomatic heterozygotes suggested that parkin and PINK1 proteins exhibited the phenomenon of haploinsufficiency. Familial Parkinson's disease, however, with a typical phenotype and pattern of 18F-dopa uptake similar to PD was observed in an autosomal dominant British kindred. This thesis also confirmed locus heterogeneity in autosomal dominant Parkinson's disease and studied a putative susceptibility allele, ACE, in a population-based study.

Abstract (sommario):
The intensive use of pesticides in agriculture generates, nowadays, an unprecedented contamination of surface water and groundwater. Conventional treatments applied to waste water containing organic pollutants are based on biological treatments méthods or physical mass transfer methods (decantation, filtration, adsorption of the pollutants on activated carbon), chemical oxidation with ozone, chlorine, etc. However, these methods remain ineffective for the treatment of water polluted by persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Advanced oxidation processes are implemented to degrade and mineralize these pollutants. This PhD thesis work aims to establish an experimental protocol to degrade and mineralize pesticides, chemicals widely used in agriculture in Morocco, such as monochlorobenzene, 1,2-dichlorobenzene, 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxy-acetic acid , and imazalil using the electro-Fenton and anodic oxidation processes with DD Pt or DSA anodes. Thus, the rate of mineralization was 92%, 95%, 92% and 97% for the monochloro-benzene, the 1,2-dichlorobenzene, the 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid , and the imazalil, respectively, after 4 h treatment by electro-Fenton process. These results confirm the effectiveness of electrochemical advanced oxidation processes for treating water polluted by pesticides

Abstract (sommario):
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative condition to affect humans, and is characterised by the loss of dopaminergic neurons from the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) in the midbrain along with the deposition of abnormal aggregates of alpha-synuclein protein in the brain which are in the form of Lewy bodies. Dopaminergic neurons from the SNpc project into a large subcortical structure known as the striatum, and positron emission tomography (PET) studies have demonstrated the dysfunction of the dopaminergic system in the striatum of patients with PD. Furthermore, immunohistochemistry studies of the striatum have identified the degeneration of dopaminergic nerve terminals and inclusions of alpha-synuclein. An aggressive and early onset form of familial PD is caused by the G51D point mutation in alpha-synuclein (G51D/+). Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated protein 9 (Cas9) technology has been used to generate a novel and precise rat model of PD which has the G51D mutation in rat alpha-synuclein. Wild-type (WT) and G51D/+ rats were analysed over the course of ageing (5, 10/11 and 16/17 months of age) using histological experiments and L-3,4-dihydroxy-6-18F-fluorophenylalanine (18FDOPA) PET imaging in order to determine if G51D/+ rats have abnormalities of histological staining and dopaminergic function analogous to those identified in patients with PD. Histological experiments were optimised using WT rat tissue and then used immunohistochemistry for tyrosine hydroxylase (an enzyme involved in the synthesis of dopamine) to evaluate dopamine nerve terminal integrity in the striatum of WT and G51D/+ rats. In addition, immunohistochemistry for alpha-synuclein was used to evaluate staining for alpha-synuclein in cell bodies and the neuropil within the striatum of WT and G51D/+ rats. 18F-DOPA is a well validated PET radiotracer and has been used to investigate dopaminergic function in the striatum of rats. The enzyme aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase converts 18F-DOPA to 6-18F-fluorodopamine, which is in turn incorporated into presynaptic vesicles, and then released into the synaptic cleft following neuronal activation. PET imaging experiments were first optimised using phantoms and WT rats, then the optimised protocols were applied to studies of WT and G51D/+ rats. Results from tyrosine hydroxylase immunohistochemistry at Bregma 0.00 mm identified a trend for decreased optical density of tyrosine hydroxylase staining in the striatum of 5 month G51D/+ rats compared with age-matched WT controls (p=0.15), and in 17 month G51D/+ rats compared with age-matched WT controls (p=0.10). Semi-quantitative analysis of alpha-synuclein immunohistochemistry indicated an increased abundance of alpha-synuclein positive cell somata in the striatum, and decreased punctate terminal staining in the neuropil of G51D/+ rats compared with age-matched WT rats. 18F-DOPA PET imaging experiments indicated a trend for decreased influx rate constant (Ki) of 18F-DOPA in the striatum of 5 month old G51D/+ rats compared with age-matched WT controls (p=0.08), and a trend for decreased distribution volume ratio (DVR) of 18F-DOPA in the striatum relative to the cerebellum of 16 month old G51D/+ rats when compared with age-matched WT controls (p=0.09). 18F-DOPA PET imaging experiments also identified a trend for a decreased effective distribution volume ratio (EDVR) of 18F-DOPA in the striatum relative to the cerebellum (p=0.09) and in turn indicated increased effective dopamine turnover (EDT) (p=0.13) in the striatum of 16 month old G51D/+ rats compared with age-matched WT rats. Therefore, the results indicated abnormalities of dopaminergic function, as well as tyrosine hydroxylase and alpha-synuclein staining in G51D/+ rats compared with age-matched WT controls, and this appeared to have some features of PD in humans. Indices of EDT indicated compensatory changes in dopaminergic function in the striatum of 16 month old G51D/+ rats compared with age-matched WT rats. Additional compensatory changes in dopaminergic terminal function and tyrosine hydroxylase protein expression may be evident in 11 and 10 month old G51D/+ rats respectively compared with age-matched WT rats. The G51D/+ rat model represents an interesting model for further studies such as the underlying pathophysiology of PD. However, the phenotype observed in G51D/+ rats appeared to be less severe than that which has been observed in humans with G51D type PD.

Abstract (sommario):
MRI provides morphological information about tumour, but also provides information regarding the micro-vascularization of the tumour. In PET/CT, the accumulation of 18F-FDopa in tumour cells results from the metabolic activity greater than that of healthy tissues. We studied 28 gliomas for which we analysed data from MRI and PET/CT. A registration method has been developed to combine information from both PET and MRI and to extract volumes of interest consistent with the information included in the two modalities. In these volumes, the tumour compartment and normal tissue compartment were identified using a Gaussian mixture model. Parameters from PET or MRI data were then calculated in these compartments. ROC analyses combined with linear discriminant analyses were used to assess whether joint observation of standardized uptake value (SUVmax ) and relative Cerebral Blood Volume (rCBV) or of relative rk1 and rCBV could distinguish between low grade and high grade tumours. We found that using this joint analysis, 82.4% of high-grade tumors and 70.0% of low-grade tumors were correctly classified (AUC of 0.88 for [SUVmax , rCBV] and of 0.92 for [rk1 , rCBV]). Considering the [SUVmax , rCBV] combined information, the sensitivity for detecting high-grade tumors was 95% with a specificity of 60%. The negative predictive value was 52% for a positive predictive value of 95%. Similarly, considering the [rk1 , rCBV] combined information, we also a specificity of 60% associated with a 95% sensitivity for detecting high-grade tumors, with a negative predictive value of 60% and positive predictive value of 95%. Our work shows that joint analysis of microvascular and metabolic information is possible by combining PET and MR imaging data. However, we found that, in our patient population, the microvascular information given by MR did not bring information more discriminating than the metabolic information derived from PET only

Abstract (sommario):
Structural components of ships are subjected to corrosion, especially when exposed to sea environment. It is, therefore, essential to seek rational standards for the structural integrity of aging structures without economic penalties with respect to the repair and maintenance costs incurred over the life cycle of the structure. To make proper decisions about costs and safety, knowledge about the effect of corrosion and other degradation phenomena on the strength is of crucial importance. The main objective of the present study is to investigate the strength of pitted stiffened plates under biaxial compression loading. For this purpose, systematic numerical FE investigations of ultimate collapse and post-ultimate responses for the stiffened plates with pit corrosion wastage are undertaken, varying the degree of pit corrosion intensity (DOP), pit depth and the location of the densest pitted zone. The focus here is on local plate failure mode which is desired to be governing failure mode in designing of stiffened plates. Geometric imperfections and residual stresses were included in the models. It is found that the ultimate strength of a stiffened plate can be significantly decreased due to pitting corrosion. The ultimate strength of pitted stiffened plates is governed not only by the level of DOP, but also by the smallest sectional area and the location of densest pitted zone. This improved knowledge of the damage tolerance assessment of stiffened plates can be used to schedule repairs more efficiently, while risk or reliability assessment schemes are normally applied for that purpose.

Abstract (sommario):
Pitting corrosion has been one of main corrosion type of immersed ship hulls, which can bring heavy damage and even accidents to in-service ships, particularly to aged ships. To investigate the effects of pits on the ultimate compressive strength of mild steel plates, a series of non-linear FEM analysis on plates with partial depth corrosion pits are undertaken in the paper, changing the size, intensity and location of pits and the slenderness of plates. It is shown that the eccentricity induced by single side distributed pits has considerable degrading effects on the ultimate compressive capacity of plates. Although the degree of pit corrosion (DOP) does reflect the effect of pits to a large extent, it is not enough to rely on DOP exclusively to represent the extent of damage caused by pits, as “volume effect” should be considered.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Corrosion pits with a conical shape are typically observed in hold frames in way of cargo holds of bulk carriers which carry coal and iron ore. The ratio of the diameter to the depth of the typical corrosion pits is in the range between 8–1 and 10–1 and its diameter might become up to 50mm. The evaluation of residual strength of members with large uneven pitting corrosion is difficult compared with that of members with general corrosion. Therefore, it is of crucial importance to develop a method for the evaluation of residual strength of pitted members. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effect of pitting corrosion on the ultimate strength of steel plates under various loading conditions and explore a method for the evaluation of residual thickness of pitted plates. In the present study, a series of non-linear FE-analyses has been conducted with steel plates with a variety of random pit distributions under various loading conditions such as uni-axial compression, bi-axial compression, shear and combination of these. In these analyses, random pit distributions were calculated by the previously developed corrosion model. It has been shown that equivalent thickness loss, which is defined as thickness loss of uniformly corroded plates with the same ultimate strength as the randomly pitted plates, is smaller than or equal to 1.25 times the average thickness loss. It has been also revealed that the equivalent thickness loss for the ultimate strength under the above-mentioned loading conditions is smaller than average thickness loss at the minimum cross section, where the average thickness loss at the minimum cross section almost corresponds to the equivalent thickness loss for the tensile strength. Based on these findings, a method for the estimation of equivalent thickness loss of pitted plates has been discussed using the thickness diminution-DOP relationship, where DOP (Degree of Pitting Intensity) is defined as the ratio of the pitted surface area to the total surface area.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Most organic shale operators and capital providers believe that refracs cannot compete economically with new wells. If production from actual refracs and infill well protection is considered, the combined NPV10 is higher than that of a new well in several of the areas studied (Barba et al 2022 and 2023). The two components of the uplift are reviewed here in greater detail than previous refrac economic analyses. For this evaluation, we looked at the Eagle Ford, Haynesville, and the Midland Basin Wolfcamp age organic shales. In the first iterations of the studies, the actual declines of 34 refracced wells in the Eagle Ford and 63 wells in the Haynesville were burdened with a current AFE estimate to provide an estimate of rate of return and NPV (Barba et al 2022 and 2023). When the completion practices were reviewed for the Haynesville we observed that operators did not consistently follow perforating "best practices" to obtain high cluster efficiencies and that they were leaving a lot of "meat on the bone." A second iteration in Haynesville estimated the increased uplift with the application of "best practices." Since the majority of the refracs in the Eagle Ford were done by operators that more frequently employ "best practices" the original declines were used. The hypothetical Permian uplift was estimated with the assumption that "best practices" would be used to obtain 100% cluster efficiencies. This should result in the recovery of the majority of the stranded hydrocarbons that have been identified with recovery factor analyses of legacy and new completions. The expected Permian uplift is the difference between the +/- 14% expected recovery factor for liner refracs with XLE and wells completed with wide cluster spacings prior to H2 2016. These legacy completions in what we are now calling "primary" or "parent" wells have recovery factors that are typically in the 2% to 5% range (Barba and Villarreal 2020). On the primary well protection refrac uplift portion, the first iterations also assumed that first order infill child wells in proximity to primary parent wells delivered 40% lower EURs than analogous infill wells without offset depletion sinks (Elliott 2019). It does not assume damage to second order or higher offsets which this study will show can be significant. A review was done of 143 Haynesville recent generation completions to estimate the recovery factors for infill wells. This recovery factor was used to compare the relative performance of infills which have primary well offsets to those without them. A key finding of that comparison was that the primary well protective refracs were indeed successful in reducing EUR damage in the infill wells. They did not totally eliminate it, however. One issue that came up in SPE 212371 (Barba et al 2023) was the liner refracs in the study did not utilize "best practices" with regard to recommended friction pressure drops and was likely that +/- 40% of the protective refrac clusters were not stimulated. The first order and second order offset EUR damage was lower than was observed in the unprotected wells. It was also observed on several occasions that the higher order more distant offsets often had similar recovery factors to lower order offsets in the same pad. Well spacing also played a role in this as the majority of the infill well spacings were less than the 1320 ft benchmark spacing (660 ft drainage radius) that provided the most consistent reasonable recovery factors. Recovery factors are based on volumetric calculations of hydrocarbon in place of an area that is the length of the lateral by the 1320 ft width and the height of the reservoir. Decline analysis provided the EUR which divided by the hydrocarbon in place yields the recovery factor. The P10 recovery factor for new wells was 56% with most of the wells with no close offsets at the high end. The distribution of recovery factors for the 143 new wells ranged from a low 16% to a high of 79%, and a P50 value of 41%. A plot will be presented in a later section to show the distribution. The wells below the P10 56% value, were not all first-order infills to depleted primary wells. The lower performance was probably a combination of infill damage to both first and higher order infill wells, well spacings less than 1320 ft, and completion practices that often did not use the recommended 3000 psi perforation friction pressure dops to maximize cluster efficiency. (Barba and Villarreal 2023 HFTC). While the study will provide an estimate of the relative importance of each variable it is clearly not as simple as just comparing EURs.
