Freedom is widely regarded as a basic social and political value that is deeply connected to the ideals of democracy, equality, liberation, and social recognition. Many insist that freedom must include conditions that go beyond simple “negative” liberty understood as the absence of constraints; only if freedom includes other conditions such as the capability to act, mental and physical control of oneself, and social recognition by others will it deserve its place in the pantheon of basic social values. Positive Freedom is the first volume to examine the idea of positive liberty in detail and from multiple perspectives. With contributions from leading scholars in ethics and political theory, this collection includes both historical studies of the idea of positive freedom and discussions of its connection to important contemporary issues in social and political philosophy.

This chapter delves into the African experience of positive development in the third decade of life. Despite the formidable challenges and difficulties growing up African, African youth not only flourish during the third decade of life, but also exhibit glaring and giant, but (most often) undocumented, steps toward overcoming their difficulties. Where distressing life experiences seem to stand in their way, they have been raised or brought up in ways to deal with difficult experiences by taking their lives and futures in their own hands. They do not just live life for the sake of it, but also become key actors and agents of their own development. This chapter therefore emphasizes positive and productive life courses often adopted by African youth to navigate the third decade of life so that they eventually flourish and not flounder.

The positive adaptation and integration of immigrant and refugee youth in host societies are crucial not only for their well-being but also for the well-being and prosperity of society. However, they face developmental and acculturative challenges, which may put at risk their positive adaptation. In addition, refugee youth have to deal with challenges linked to traumatic experiences before and during their forced migration and after seeking asylum in the host country. In spite of these challenges, most immigrant and refugee youth, after an initial period, will adapt well to their new environment. The chapter addresses the question: Who among immigrant and refugee youth do well, concurrently and over time, and why? Scientific evidence regarding barriers and resources for positive immigrant and refugee youth adaptation is presented and discussed. Public policy recommendations that aim to eliminate barriers to positive adaptation and to enhance their social and personal capital are also formulated.

The chapter addresses the molecular genetic basis of the personality trait positive emotionality (PE). Beginning with historical aspects of heritability estimation and personality assessment, the main portion of this chapter discusses the molecular genetics basis of PE, which is investigated far less frequently than that of negative emotionality (NE). The studies reviewed focus on individual differences in PE in healthy subjects and include only those studies that assess PE by broadly accepted personality inventories. The review is concentrated on dopaminergic and serotonergic genes because these genes show the most association with PE.

Humanism is not the only answer to the conditions of secularism, nor would secularism inevitably equal nihilism without humanism.. This chapter articulates and defends positive humanism, a tradition not defined just by rejecting dogmatic religion but by seeking ethical ideals and human rights. Realizing those values requires hermeneutic interpretations of humanist exemplars from many cultures, past and present, in order to creatively apply those values within individual contexts. Humanism stands for liberty (autonomy and resilience), responsibility (the duty to care, for which one is answerable), justice (upholding institutions and arrangements that protect people from exploitation and humiliation), solidarity (spiritual and material care for one another), diversity (the right to individual and group identity), art of living (refined moral conduct toward oneself and others), and sustainability (long-term care for the inhabitability of the planet). Taken together, these values seek to promote humaneness.

This chapter posits that international law, like all law, can be understood as a hybrid of positive and natural law. The history of natural law from Ancient Greece to today’s global community reveals that the method used for centuries to explain extra-positive features of law consists of three integral elements. The method uses reason, reflection on nature, and openness to transcendence. Certain contemporary natural law theorists, however, prefer to focus on reason and nature alone. Yet, the history of natural law thinking shows that transcendence is integral to the method. History also reveals that religion is not the only avenue to transcendence. Transcendence completes a natural law method capable of explaining persuasively why law binds in general and why certain principles are superior to positive law.

The color dove illusion is a type of a positive afterimage. The color dove illusion can be obtained with different colors and spatial surrounding regions. In this illusion the disappearance of a colored background causes an empty shape to obtain the hue of the disappeared background. The effect can be obtained even when the surrounding background area is relatively thin and when it is presented for a very short duration. This illusion occurs only when the contour of the empty shape remains after the background disappearance. Thus the color dove illusion is a positive aftereffect, which is different from classical positive aftereffects. This chapter evaluates biases that contribute to the common misrepresentation of fragmentation as a major threat to biodiversity. The idea that habitat fragmentation seriously threatens biodiversity is so widespread that it might be considered a “conservation biology principle.” However, effects attributed to habitat fragmentation are usually confounded with effects of habitat loss. A recent review of the effects of habitat fragmentation per se (effects independent of habitat loss) indicated that 76% of significant effects of fragmentation were positive, and in no situation were most effects negative. Comparing the abstracts of papers with the actual results reported in the body of each paper revealed that fewer than half of the authors who found only positive fragmentation effects actually discuss these positive effects in their abstracts. Thus, authors themselves reinforce the misrepresentation of the fragmentation literature, potentially because authors fear that their results could be incorrectly used to justify habitat destruction.

Our understanding of the freedom advanced by the political thinkers of the Enlightenment has long been dominated by two conceptual categories, negative and positive liberty. Yet this convenient dichotomy obscures appreciation of the ways in which these two concepts of liberty can and often do work together. This chapter aims to redress this by examining the conception of freedom set forth by three key Enlightenment thinkers: Adam Smith, Rousseau, and Kant. It argues that their concept of “moral” or “inner” freedom suggests an important way in which positive liberty can promote ends traditionally associated with negative liberty. Specifically, these philosophers regard moral freedom as inextricable from political freedom insofar as moral freedom enables us to shoulder the burdens of political freedom. Thus their concept of freedom offers good reasons not only to question the separation between positive and negative freedom, but to regard moral freedom as indispensable to political freedom.

This chapter explores the meaning of Adam Smith’s claim that Jean-Jacques Rousseau embodied ‘the true spirit of a republican carried a little too far’, ultimately concluding that Smith was not referring to Rousseau’s ‘republican’ or ‘positive’ conception of liberty but rather to his claim that commerce is invariably corrupt and corrupting. It also explores these thinkers’ conceptions of liberty, arguing that their views are nearly diametrically opposed, but not (only) in the way that is generally assumed. On the level of politics, as is well known, Smith advocated negative liberty while Rousseau advocated positive liberty. Yet on the level of the individual Smith regarded a kind of positive liberty—namely, self-command—as a necessary component of a moral life, while Rousseau regarded negative liberty as a supreme good for those who are sufficiently free of destructive passions that they will refrain from abusing it.

The descriptive epidemiology of Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) has demonstrated marked variation by age, sex, social class, and time, strongly suggesting both a role of environmental factors and the existence of etiologically diverse HL subtypes. There is increasing evidence that Epstein Barr virus (EBV)–positive and EBV-negative classical HLs define two variants with separate etiologies. The risk for both increases with family history, whereas immune dysfunction and infectious mononucleosis have been implicated in EBV-positive HL risk only. Despite being the less common of the two, the natural history of EBV-positive HL is currently the best understood, both with respect to how EBV may contribute to malignant cell transformation and in relation to constitutional and environmental risk factors. Meanwhile, the understanding of the natural history of EBV-negative HL is meager. Future research for EBV-negative HL is expected to focus on its presumed infectious etiology, for which there are currently no strong candidates.

Following seven chapters of negativity, this chapter sketches some positive answers to the questions which perfect being theology has been used, unsuccessfully in the author’s view, to answer. It argues that, in our attempt to discern the divine attributes, there is little hope to finding a starting point in a conceptual truth about God. Rather, the only two real alternatives are the traditional ones: the method of natural theology and what Aquinas calls the science of sacred doctrine. Pursuing a version of the second strategy which begins with assumptions about God which are less specific than, for example, exclusively Christian doctrines is advocated. A positive view of the semantics of ‘God’ is also sketched.

These adolescents not only face many challenges but also represent a resource to be cultivated through educational opportunities and vocational training to move them toward economic independence, through initiatives to improve reproductive health, and through positive interpersonal relationships to help them avoid risky behaviors and make positive decisions about their futures. This volume tackles the challenges and promise of adolescence by presenting cutting-edge research on adolescent social, emotional, behavioral, cognitive, and physical development; promising programs from different countries to promote adolescents’ positive development; and policies that can advance adolescents’ rights within the framework of international initiatives, such as the Convention on the Rights of the Child and Sustainable Development Goals, which are guiding the international development agenda through 2030. This volume seeks to provide actionable strategies for policymakers and practitioners working with adolescents. Disconnects between national-level policies and local services, as well as lack of continuity with early childhood responses, present a significant challenge to ensuring a coherent approach for adolescents. Increasingly, adolescent participation and demands for rights-based approaches are seen and often unfortunately conflated with violence. This volume adopts a positive framing of adolescence, representing young people as opportunities rather than threats, and a valued investment both at individual and societal levels, contributing to a positive shift in discourses around young people.

The chapter shows that the economy suffered a slowdown as a consequence of the international crisis of 2008, but Peru sustained positive GDP growth rates during that episode and had only a small reduction in gross domestic product per capita. The only labour market indicators impacted by the international crisis were the employment structure by educational level and the percentage of registered workers who suffered a slowdown in their improving trends.

Bacteria are the most frequent causes of severe sepsis and septic shock, while viruses, fungi, and parasites are implicated less often. Positive cultures are found in only 60% of cases; this may be the result of previous antibiotic therapy or inadequate sampling or testing. The etiology of sepsis is constantly changing; whereas Gram-negative organisms used to make up the majority of cases, Gram-positive bacteria now predominate. Sepsis due to fungal disease has also seen a dramatic rise. These changes may be explained by alterations in patient demographics, such as an increasingly elderly population with multiple comorbidities; an increased frequency of indwelling catheters or devices; and greater numbers of patients with immunosuppression as a result of disease or drug therapy. This chapter covers symptoms, demographics, diagnosis, investigation, prognosis, and treatment within the ITU environment.

This chapter presents the main real-estate indices used worldwide for investment purposes and on which derivatives contracts are very likely to be issued. It is important to know the type of real-estate index based on the method of construction. The chapter contains a description of the main real-estate indices used in real-estate derivatives contracts, indices that are built using various methodologies such as hedonic, repeat sales, appraisal, or transaction based. Themethod of construction of the real-estate index should be taken into consideration when modelling the real-estate indices. The stylized facts about the real-estate indices are important not only for a better understanding of the real-estate investmentmarket per se but also for better model construction for pricing real-estate derivatives. Serial correlation is amajor feature of real-estate indices as demonstrated comprehensibly in this chapter and in general this is positive short-term, and negative medium-term. Longer-term serial correlationmay switch back to being positive, albeit weakly positive, or disappear as in the case of daily calculated indices. Taking into account the stylized features of real-estate indices is necessary to avoid model risk.

Acute respiratory failure not only impairs gas exchange, but also stresses cardiovascular reserve by increasing the need for increased cardiac output (CO) to sustain O2 delivery in the face of hypoxaemia, increased O2 demand by the increased work of breathing and inefficient gas exchange, and increased right ventricular afterload due to lung collapse via hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction. Mechanical ventilation, though often reversing these processes by lung recruitment and improved arterial oxygenation, may also decrease CO by increasing right atrial pressure by either increasing intrathoracic pressure or lung over-distention by excess positive end-expiratory pressure or inadequate expiratory time causing acute cor pulmonale. Finally, spontaneous negative swings in intrathoracic pressure also increase venous return and impede left ventricular ejection thus increasing intrathoracic blood volume and often precipitating or worsening hydrostatic pulmonary oedema. Positive-pressure breathing has the opposite effects.
