Markets and traders in Vietnam are on the move, literally and figuratively. The chapters in this volume offer rich ethnographic exploration of daily interactions among small-scale traders, suppliers, customers, family members, neighbors, and officials within contemporary Vietnam and across its borders. These quotidian encounters occur within contested spaces, through expanding and contracting circuits of mobility, and across physical and conceptual boundaries that are fixed, yet porous. As they ply their wares and negotiate state regulations, traders shape notions of self and personhood, not just as economic actors, but also in terms of gender, region, morality, and ethnicity. Taken together, the diverse contributions to this collection demonstrate that markets form and transform through uneven interplay among global processes, state regulatory regimes, individual identities, and local trajectories of economic and social development. Rather than impede market function, these trading frictions shape the necessary ground on which new forms of political economy emerge.

The kaleidoscope of social identity is defined by multiple forces of signification. Gender, ethnicity, and class trace porous borders of the social and symbolic space within which consumption practices unfold, changing, forcing, and sometimes even subverting the apparent fixity of those spaces. The transition from childhood to adulthood is marked by clear biological changes that affect the conduct of life and the ways in which to confront a series of phases in the form of the transformation and maturation of the body. The analysis of consumption practices can be useful in showing how young people define themselves. As part of a discussion on youth and consumption, this article focuses on cultures of consumption among young workers. It also discusses the social deviance and consumer behaviour of young people, the impact of advertising on the social representation of the youth body, films and fantasies, and the emergence of a youth mass market.

A história feminina na Ciência e Tecnologia foi limitada devido a fatores circunstanciais que delimitaram o espaço como predominantemente masculino, de maneira que até hoje a presença das mulheres nessa área de conhecimento ainda é pequena. Durante séculos a luta feminina por direitos civis e educacionais foi acirrada, sendo vários os eventos históricos em que mulheres foram em busca de oportunidades de formação profissional e à disputa dos lugares de trabalho no mercado, seja porque tinham o ideal de igualdade de gênero, seja porque não aceitaram o discurso de que a capacidade da mulher seria inferior a do homem. O presente trabalho de pesquisa tem como problema a ser analisado a presença feminina em cursos de graduação de engenharias. O objetivo geral é analisar as construções discursivas que limitaram os espaços de vivência das mulheres, causando diferenças sociais e de gênero, e especificamente, investigar a inserção feminina na Ciência e Tecnologia, e as principais dificuldades enfrentadas por elas. Para isso foram utilizados dados estatísticos veiculados pela Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) e do Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq); e, relatos de ex-alunas, ex-professoras, professoras, ex-professores e professores da Escola Politécnica da Paraíba, da Universidade Federal da Paraíba e da Universidade Federal de Campina Grande. Foram também utilizados artigos, dissertações de Mestrado e teses de Doutorado.

Bringing the concept of contamination into dialogue with affect theory and bioart, Agnieszka Anna Wołodźko urges us to rethink our relationship with ourselves, each other and other organisms. Thinking through the lens of contamination, this book provides an innovative approach to understanding the leaky, porous and visceral nature of our bodies and their endless interrelationships and, in doing so, uncovers new ways for thinking about embodiment. Affect theory has long been interested in transmission or contagion but, inspired by Spinoza and Deleuze, Affect as Contamination goes further, as contamination is concerned with the materiality of bodies and their affective encounter with other matter. This brings urgency to the notion of affect, not only for bioart that works with risky bodies but also for understanding how to practise our bodies in the age of biotechnological manipulation and governance. Using challenging and transgressive bioart projects as provocative case studies for rethinking affect and bodily practice, Wołodźko follows various ‘contaminants’ from blood, hormones and viruses - including COVID-19 - to food, glitter and plants. This takes the form of both personal accounts of encounters with the contaminations of bioart and critical analyses of aesthetic, material and technical objects, with each one highlighting in different ways the risky and uncertain nature of contamination. Affect as Contamination is an urgent and original meditation on just what it means to be living, and practising our bodies, in an era where biotechnology contaminates all aspects of our lives.

This chapter examines Korea's animation industry, which has not been a major cultural form in Hallyu research. It investigates the historical, cultural, and economic forces that have shaped Korea's animation characters in the context of the debates on globalization utilizing the framework of hybridity. It analyzes the texts of a few animation characters, including Pororo the Little Penguin, in order to understand the major reasons for the sudden growth of the Korean animation industry. In particular, it maps out the hybrid nature of Korean animation, which is the politicization of local popular culture. By using Korea's animations, it challenges the notation of the depoliticization of popular culture. Finally, given that American and Japanese animation characters have exerted a huge influence since the early development of Korean animation, and taking into account the inclusion of elements of hybridization in production, the chapter discusses the ways in which the domestic animation industry has become popular in the global market.

De realçar que, ao longo deste século, apenas foram proferidas sete Orações de Sapiência, dada a tardia passagem do Ensino de Farmácia a Ensino Superior e ainda mais tardia passagem da Escola de Farmácia a Faculdade de Farmácia. São estas sete Orações de Sapiência «em louvor das Ciências e exortação dos ouvintes ao estudo delas» que agora reunimos num único volume e que consideramos contribuir não só para ilustrar o que foi a História da Faculdade de Farmácia de Coimbra, mas também relembrar e homenagear os autores que redigiram estas Orações de Sapiência e, neles, todos os docentes desta Faculdade.

Este conjunto de conversas destina-se essencialmente a quem gosta de ouvir contar histórias. São conversas com um forte pendor cinematográfico, não só porque o mote que as atravessa é o cinema em Moçambique, mas sobretudo porque a forma como são reveladas as memórias que habitam esse espaço é também ela, muitas vezes, formulada através de imagens que têm movimento. Abrir os Gomos do Tempo: Conversas Sobre Cinema em Moçambique é também para aquelas pessoas que, como nós, ficam felizes ao ouvir de novo a frase, “um outro mundo é possível!” e tem, a nosso ver, a beleza e a força das palavras daqueles que acreditam em novas possibilidades de vida. O livro abre com um prefácio de Nataniel Ngomane e é constituído por um conjunto de conversas com personalidades chave da história do cinema moçambicano: Américo Soares, Faria de Almeida, Gabriel Mondlane, Jean-Luc Godard, João Ribeiro, José Cardoso, Licinio Azevedo, Lopes Barbosa, Luís Carlos Patraquim, Pedro Pimenta, Ruy Guerra e Sol de Carvalho. As entrevistas foram realizadas por Ana Cristina Pereira, Diana Manhiça, Lurdes Macedo, Maria do Carmo Piçarra, Rosa Cabecinhas, Sheila Khan e Sílvia Vieira. O livro remata com um discurso de José Luís Cabaço, proferido em 1980, altura em que era ministro da informação de Moçambique, acompanhado por uma introdução, feita pelo próprio, que corresponde à sua leitura atual desse discurso enquanto ministro. Mexendo um pouco na cronologia, é possível traçar com estas peças de Miguel Castro Caldas (MCC) um arco narrativo da conjugalidade: os primeiros passos de um casal no epílogo de Os Assassinos (2011), o pedido de casamento em Carvão Sobre Tela (2012), a infidelidade em Restauro da Sociedade Conjugal (2010), a vida com filhos em Terreno Selvagem (2016), de novo a infidelidade em Se eu vivesse tu morrias (2016), a solidão (viuvez?) de Não costumo falar contigo (2017). Porquê este interesse pela instituição do casamento? Talvez precisamente por se tratar de uma situação de tal maneira convencional que até a sua subversão (ou traição) é lugar-comum: do “boy meets girl” ao “felizes para sempre” ou nem por isso, entre casar e cansar, este é um tema estafado a partir do qual as variações já foram todas experimentadas. [...] O casamento é uma fórmula narrativa de que MCC se serve menos para lhe desmontar a ideologia do que para dispensar a própria necessidade de uma narrativa – e assim usar o tempo de outra maneira. A escrita de MCC pratica um certo desrespeito pelas instituições, a começar pelas da própria escrita.

A pandemia de covid-19 foi devastadora para os pequenos negócios, tendo causado queda brusca de demanda, interrupção das atividades e, em muitos casos, fechamento definitivo de diversas empresas. Dados do IBGE mostram que, até junho de 2020, 716.372 empresas fecharam as portas de vez; dessas, 99,8% eram de menor porte. Tamanho impacto implicou uma perda expressiva de estoque de capital. A partir de bases de dados do IBGE, este trabalho traz estimativa inédita do total de estoque de capital das empresas brasileiras por porte e setor das empresas. Utilizando essas estimativas e os resultados da Pesquisa Pulso Empresa: impacto da covid-19 nas empresas, também do IBGE, estima-se, de maneira conservadora, que, até junho de 2020, foram perdidos entre R$ 9,1 bilhões e R$ 24,1 bilhões (em R$ de dez/2020) em estoque de capital de micro e pequenas empresas, com os setores de comércio e serviços tendo sido os mais afetados. Considerando-se os valores da faixa do estoque total perdido e a taxa anual média de formação de capital dos pequenos negócios entre 2014 e 2018, serão necessários, caso não sobrevenha nenhum apoio governamental nesse sentido, entre 1 e 3 anos para sua total recomposição. Caso fossem considerados os negócios que fecharam por conta da pandemia após junho de 2020 (último período com dado disponível), os quase 14 milhões de microempreendedores individuais que não foram incluídos no cômputo, os negócios informais e os ativos intangíveis, é de se supor que o valor total de estoque perdido pelos pequenos negócios tenha superado o limite superior da faixa aqui estimada, que é de R$ 24,1 bilhões. Essas estimativas visam a apoiar no dimensionamento das políticas públicas focadas para a reconstrução do estoque de capital perdido, bem como para facilitar o acesso ao crédito por essas empresas.

More often than not, transnational crime takes the form of organized crime, and in its many forms is responsible for over-priced goods, unsafe products, environmental hazards, corruption of public officials, the exploitation of women and children, tax evasion, theft and piracy, identity theft, organ smuggling, stock market fraud, drug trafficking, and black market trading in armaments and weapons of mass destruction, among other scandals and forms of misconduct. Because perpetrators often act in collusion with legitimate organizations and other powerful elites, who either cooperate knowingly or unknowingly or are coerced through violence, dealing with the problem is especially difficult. Here, Liddick describes the many groups responsible for transnational crimes, and the nature and scale of their various enterprises. The result is a powerful testament to the globalization of criminal organizations and their danger to American society. From the Russian mafiya to Chinese Triads, from outlaw motorcycle gangs to Latin American drug cartels, the nature and incidence of transnational crime is a serious threat to American security, both at the national and the individual level. Because of America's porous borders, it is relatively easy for criminal foreigners to set up their organizations within the United States Moreover, there are well-established groups already present in the United States that are now capable of operating on a multinational level. While response to the problem has been overdue, recent efforts to address transnational crime include technological innovations and controversial legislation such as the Patriot Act and the Homeland Security Act. But how well will these measures protect Americans from the increasing prevalence of criminal organizations that are capable of carrying out crimes that span the globe? This important book provides an engaging glimpse into the world of transnational crime through an introduction to the various groups involved, true stories of criminal misconduct, and a careful review and evaluation of efforts to address the problem.

O tema deste livro é a política de habitação social contemporânea em cidades médias do interior paulista. Trata-se de uma versão revisada, resumida e editada da dissertação “Políticas públicas de habitação social em cidades médias do interior paulista – 2000-2020”, desenvolvida originalmente no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Arquitetura e Urbanismo da FAAC/UNESP. A política habitacional é inseparável da análise do desenvolvimento urbano porque compreende uma forma muito particular de produção do espaço, cujas competências de ordenação e planejamento têm no poder público (o Estado) um ator decisivo. Nesse sentido, as questões centrais a partir das quais este estudo se desenvolveu foram de duas ordens. Em primeiro lugar, analisar em que medida e até que ponto a política pública de Habitação de Interesse Social pode ser explicada pelos parâmetros estabelecidos pelo conceito de déficit habitacional. Em segundo lugar, compreender se o estudo comparativo de diferentes escalas urbanas (não metropolitanas) encontraria respostas e cenários originais muito diferentes da conhecida realidade dos grandes centros urbanos e regiões metropolitanas. O estudo analisou comparativamente as características, o alcance e os impactos das políticas públicas de habitação social em quatro cidades médias do interior paulista – Piracicaba, Limeira, Bauru e Jaú –, no intervalo de 2000 a 2020, avaliando a relação entre a provisão de moradias e a evolução do déficit habitacional e da inadequação domiciliar.

This book introduces readers to the historical, performative, and cultural context of pansori, a traditional Korean oral story-singing art. Written by a scholar-practitioner of the form, this study is structured in three parts and begins by introducing readers to the technical, aesthetic, and theoretical components of pansori as well as the synthesis of vocal and percussive elements that stage the narrative. It also reflects on the historical contexts of pansori alongside Korea’s transformation from Joseon monarchy to modern statehood. It argues that with colonial annexation came modernist influences that Korean dramatists and audiences used to create distinct new genres of Korean performance, using the common thread of pansori. It further explores the dynamic interplay of preservation and innovation, beginning in the post-war designation of national performance art and continuing with developments that coincide with Korea’s imprint on cultural globalization. Along with Korea’s growth as a world economic center, a growing enthusiasm for Korean culture around the world has increased the transmission and visibility of pansori. Chan E. Park argues that tradition and innovation are not as divergent as they are sometimes imagined to be and that tradition is the force that enables innovation. Unique among treatments of this subject, this book is written from combined researcher and practitioner perspectives. Drawing on her ethnographic work and performance practice, Chan E. Park interweaves expert knowledge of both the textual and performative aspects of the form, rendering legible this dramatic tradition. Pansori as voice theatre examines the practice of pansori, Korean oral storysinging, in its historical, performative, and cultural context. There are three sections to the text. Section One analyzes technical, aesthetic, and theoretical components of pansori. Using translated samples, the book explicates the synthesis of vocal and percussive elements that, together with the listening ear, stage the narrative. Section Two critically reflects on the historical contexts of pansori alongside Korea’s transformation from Joseon monarchy (1391-1910) to modern statehood. In the case of pansori tradition, the posited strict class hierarchies of Joseon were in fact porous, as attested by the patronages and collaborations over generations. With colonial annexation (1910-1945) came modernist influences that Korean dramatists and audiences localized into distinct new genres of Korean performance using the common thread of pansori. Section Three examines the dynamic interplay of preservation and innovation, beginning in the post-War designation of national performance art (gugak) and continuing with off-mainstream, fusion, and hybrid developments that coincide with Korea’s imprint on cultural globalization (hallyu). Along with Korea’s growth as a world economic center (late twentieth century to present), a growing enthusiasm for Korean culture around the world has increased the transmission and visibility of pansori through institutions of popular culture. Ultimately, tradition and innovation are not as divergent as they are sometimes imagined to be. Rather, a study of pansori suggests that tradition is the centripetal force that enables innovation for the collective theatrical imagination.

Visibilizar a invisibilidade da pobreza em um país como o nosso não deveria ser uma tarefa tão difícil, visto que a cada passo que damos, seja no campo, seja nas cidades, nos deparamos com suas múltiplas expressões. Mas o é... Adentrar nessa cegueira social é entender que somos, enquanto sociedade, forçados a não enxergar, a não reconhecer e a não enfrentar a pobreza, porque somos um país cruelmente colonizado em seu modo de pensar. Para Dussel (2000) o sistema colonial oprimiu, para além de corpos e povos, o conhecimento, o modo como compreendemos o mundo e suas relações. Somando a isso nossa avassaladora escravidão, temos as matrizes fundantes de nossa sociedade, cega diante da pobreza e da injustiça social. Para Gonçalves Filho, “o que vemos e o que deixamos de ver, a priori, não são decididos por nós, mas sim pelo modo como fomos colocados em companhia dos outros e como os outros são colocados diante de nós” (2004, p. 08). A cultura brasileira nasceu do convívio entre muitas instituições. Entretanto, família, escola, Estado, justiça, mercado, não foram tão fundantes para nós como o foi a instituição da escravidão (SOUZA, 2017). Foi essa sociabilidade que legitimou culturalmente explorar seres humanos às raias da morte e também invisibilizar pobreza e desigualdade social. Nesse sentido, enxergar a pobreza significa aprender a desaprender, aprender a desnaturalizar esse fenômeno contundente, espólio da escravidão, que nos corrompe enquanto sociedade – essa sim, a escravidão, a nossa maior e mais profunda corrupção, que precisa ser enfrentada.

This first major study of the early Reformation and Polish monarchy for over a century asks why Crown and church in the reign of King Sigismund I (1506–48) did not persecute Lutherans. It offers a new narrative of Luther’s dramatic impact on this monarchy—which saw violent urban Reformations and the creation of Christendom’s first Lutheran principality by 1525—placing these events in their comparative European context. Sigismund’s realm appears to offer a major example of sixteenth-century religious toleration: the King tacitly allowed his Hanseatic ports to enact local Reformations, enjoyed excellent relations with his Lutheran vassal duke in Prussia, allied with pro-Luther princes across Europe, and declined to enforce his own heresy edicts. Polish church courts allowed dozens of suspected Lutherans to walk free. Examining these episodes, this study does not treat toleration purely as the product of political calculation or pragmatism. Instead, it reconstructs the underlying cultural beliefs about religion and church held by the King, bishops, courtiers, literati, and clergy—asking what they understood ‘Lutheranism’ and ‘catholicism’ to be? It argues that the ruling elites of the Polish monarchy did not persecute Lutheranism because they did not perceive it as a dangerous Other—but as a variant form of catholic Christianity within an already variegated late medieval church, where social unity was more important than doctrinal differences. Building on John Bossy, and borrowing from J. G. A. Pocock, it proposes a broader hypothesis on the Reformation as a shift in the languages and concept of orthodoxy.

O planeamento e desenvolvimento de uma pesquisa sobre o uso político de monumentos na Hungria desde 2010 me levou a um impasse metodológico e não consegui progressos pelo que entendia ser a fórmula dos manuais para definir e resolver um problema. Embora tivesse um tema, um objeto e um pressentimento de que havia algo a ser investigado, não conseguia descrever em uma frase o problema e nem a questão de pesquisa. Acreditava que encontraria o problema ao analisar os atos do governo e a opinião pública e iniciei a revisão bibliográfica, catalogação de monumentos e escolha de uma amostra representativa. Ao tratar os monumentos como dados, ignorei que eles eram as testemunhas e vítimas a serem ouvidas. Pretendo descrever criticamente essa jornada através do objeto de pesquisa, decisões erradas e caminhos alternativos que me mostraram outras possibilidades. Meu objetivo é responder porque o ponto de partida da minha pesquisa estava errado e o que possibilitou a correção da rota durante o percurso. Partindo da experiência de campo, ilustrarei como a história individual e coletiva dos monumentos me possibilitou delimitar um problema que não cabia em planilhas ou modelagens. O uso de autores da arquitetura, história, linguística, memória, entre outros me possibilitou um olhar multidisciplinar o qual pretendo apresentar brevemente. A flexibilização das fronteiras entre áreas do conhecimento, ciência e artes se complementaram e não foram excludentes entre si nesta pesquisa, permitindo certa liberdade interpretativa no contexto, espaço e tempo. Adicionalmente, as teorias autor-rede e fontes secundárias, obtidos a partir de mecanismos de busca online serão utilizados na análise do processo de investigação. Espero demonstrar que a minha decisão errada de planeamento de pesquisa literal e inspirada em conceitos quantitativos me levou a um lugar até então inexplorado por mim: o objeto como objeto de pesquisa.
