Abstract (sommario):
OBJECTIVE: Popular (i.e., nonclassical) musicians have higher rates of mental health disorders and mental health service utilization than the general population. Little is known, however, about how popular musicians perceive mental health interventions in terms of overall satisfaction and therapeutic benefit. METHODS: An online client satisfaction survey was sent to all musicians and family members who received mental health services through a nonprofit mental health organization in Austin, Texas, between July 2014 and June 2015 (n=628). RESULTS: 260 individuals (41.4%) responded to the survey, of whom 94% (n=244) were musicians. A majority of musician respondents were male (60%) and white (82%). 87% received counseling, 32% received psychiatric medication treatment, and 8% received addiction recovery services. 97% of musicians (205/211) rated their counselor as ‘very good’ or ‘excellent,’ 88% (64/79) rated their psychiatric providers as ‘very good’ or ‘excellent,’ and 94% (17/19) rated their addiction recovery specialists as ‘very good’ or ‘excellent’ (nonsignificant between all categories, p>0.05). 89% of musicians receiving counseling, 84% receiving psychiatric medication treatment, and 95% receiving addiction recovery services agreed or strongly agreed that their symptoms and overall functioning improved as a result of their treatment (nonsignificant between all categories, p>0.05). CONCLUSION: Popular musicians express strong provider satisfaction and overall benefit when mental health interventions are accessible, affordable, and delivered by professionals familiar with their concerns. More research is needed to understand the unique psychosocial stresses popular musicians face to inform treatment planning for this high-risk, underserved population.

Abstract (sommario):
The compensatory growth and defensive capabilities of woody plants after damage are crucial to their large-scale promotion and economic value. Here, Popular talassica × Popular euphratica were subjected to artificial defoliation treatments that simulated leaf damage [25% (D25), 50% (D50), and 75% (D75) leaf removal] to study the growth, anatomical, and physiological characteristics. The results showed that D25 and D50 treatments significantly increased the growth parameters, such as leaf length, leaf area, and specific leaf area, but did not affect the distributions of root and stem biomasses compared with the CK. However, the D75 treatment significantly decreased most growth parameters. The time required for the chlorophyll content to recover increased along with the damage intensity as follows: D25, high-flat-high; D50, low-high-flat; and D75, low-flat-high. Furthermore, leaf damage significantly reduced stomatal density, whereas the stomatal width, area, opening, and Pn significantly increased by 8.59%, 8.40%, 23.27%, and 31.22%, respectively, under the D50 treatment, generating a photosynthetic compensation response. The leaf anatomical parameters increased along with damage intensity, except spongy tissue thickness, which decreased, while the stem anatomical parameters showed trends of first increasing and then decreasing, reaching maxima under the D50 treatment. The enzymes showed an increasing and then decreasing trend as the damage time increased. After 1 d of treatment, CAT, POD, and PAL activities peak at D75, in contrast to a peak of SOD activity at D50. Overall, these findings indicate that it is advisable to keep the amount of leaf damage within 50%. The leaf damage can have an impact on the growth of P. talassica × P. euphratica. They adjusted their resource allocation strategy and physiological defense capacity by increasing the chlorophyll content, improving photosynthetic capacity, changing stem and leaf anatomy, and increasing defense enzyme activity levels, thereby improving their damage tolerance and adaptability.

Abstract (sommario):
OBJECTIVE: To identify popular beliefs regarding the treatment of senile cataract in patients enrolled in the community health programs on eye rehabilitation. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was carried out using an interview questionnaire that was applied to 776 subjects drawn from a non-probabilistic sample in five cities of the state of São Paulo. The sample was made up of 47.2% males and 52.8% females, aged 50 to 96 years (average age 71.6 years). RESULTS: Of the total of subjects studied, 41.9% had never attended school, and 78.5% were no longer in the employment market. Most (85.1%) credited the sight restoration to cataract surgery. Among those unconvinced, 47.4% asserted that sight restoration depended only on God's will. A greater proportion of women than men (p 0.0000) believed in the association of cataract and menopause, maternity, and menstrual periods and they admitted using herbal and rose teas for treating cataract. CONCLUSIONS: Misbeliefs related to the causes and treatment of senile cataract were identified, most probably of sociocultural basis, indicating the need of education on the subject.

Abstract (sommario):
Objectives. The aim of this study was to determine current physiotherapy practice in private clinics across the UK in the management of whiplash-associated disorder (WAD) injuries. Design. All treatment reports provided to a private health care company between January 2008 and July 2010 (N=365) were included and analysed to determine the following: the treatments favoured in the management of whiplash; the number of sessions used on average; and the main reasons for discharge. Results. Joint mobilisations, stretches and mobility exercises were favoured in the management of acute whiplash treatment and were used in 74%, 68% and 61% of cases, respectively. The most popular treatments in chronic whiplash, in order of preference, were: stretches (73%), joint mobilisations (69%) and soft-tissue massage (63%). On average, physiotherapists used 4.46 sessions and 7.21 modalities per patient. Although the outcome measures were limited to reason for discharge, the majority of patients were discharged because of ‘treatment complete/self management sufficient’, which may be assumed to be a favourable recovery for 79% of patients. Conclusion. This study found that physical therapists across the UK generally use evidence-based modalities in the treatment of whiplash. However, there remains a need to emphasise and embrace a more educational and active approach to the management of these injuries. The study recommends a protocol for treating WAD that includes supplementing therapeutic modalities with an exercise component, and routinely providing information and advice to ‘act as usual’.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis examines the relationships between popular contemporary musical styles and classic-era art music. Analysis of pop-rock songs, and their referential treatment in art rock, classical music, and society will be examined. Pop-rock musicians borrow from the masters of the past and from each other. Rock guitarists such as Eddie Van Halen employ a virtuosic technique suggestive of Liszt and Paganini. The group Rush borrowed freely from opera seria. Frank Zappa referenced contemporary musicians as well as classical techniques. Referential treatment in popular music and the recent advancements in technology, have challenged copyright law. How these treatments and technologies affect copyright legislators and musicians will be discussed.

Ann, O'Brien Coleen. "Nursing strategies to facilitate self-management in persons living with diabetes mellitus type 2". Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/1627.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The growing pandemic of diabetes mellitus (DM) is continuing to spread around the world with developing countries being most vulnerable. Diabetes mellitus is the direct cause of 5 percent of deaths worldwide at present, with an expected increase of 50percent in the next 10 years. Diabetes mellitus was virtually unknown in Africa at the start of the 20th century but the incidence is expected to increase by 80 percent by 2025. South African estimates indicate that at present there are up to four million people living with DM in South Africa, with an expected rise of 25 percent by 2020. If DM is not adequately controlled, life-threatening complications ensue, resulting in financial, physical and emotional costs both for people living with the condition and for their families. There is also a great financial burden on the state, both directly due to the cost of providing health care and indirectly due to loss of productivity and a reduced tax base. Global initiatives against DM include the Diabetes Strategy for Africa compiled by the International Diabetes Federation and World Health Organization. There are several forms of DM with Type 2 being the most common with an estimated 95% of cases. Optimal glycaemic control is essential for the management of DM, potentially allowing the course of the disease to be slowed or halted. The previous medical model of management of chronic disease has changed to an empowerment approach where the person living with the condition is a partner in the management process. This is particularly true of DM where all aspects of life are affected by the condition. During Phase One of this study, a qualitative, exploratory, descriptive, contextual approach was utilized to explore and describe the experiences of persons living with DM and of diabetes nurse educators who assist them in Nelson Mandela Bay. During Phase Two, a conceptual framework was created and utilized to develop strategies which professional nurses may use in facilitating self-management by persons living with DM. Persons living with DM experience a definite initial experience on diagnosis of DM but gradually gain an acceptance and acknowledgment of their condition. They have definite views on the concept of self-management and experience both positive and negative factors influencing self-management. They also have definite ideas on how professional nurses may assist them in achieving self-management. These findings were confirmed ii by the experiences of the diabetes nurse educators who formed the second group of participants in this study. The ACE approach to self-management of DM consists of an Action Strategy, a Coordination Strategy and an Education Strategy. The ACE approach makes use of grand and functional strategies implemented on the macro (national), meso (provincial) and micro (local) levels to enable the professional nurse to assist persons living with DM to achieve self-management of their condition. Grand strategies need to be implemented on a macro or meso level to enable the professional nurse to function effectively on a micro level. Assisting the patient has to go beyond merely improving knowledge about the condition but has to include individual goal setting as well as problem solving skills and coping strategies as part of a therapeutic relationship between the professional nurse and the person living with DM. The level of personal responsibility achieved by persons living with DM is affected by the memes which they hold regarding their level of health and their ability to address any barriers to self-management which they may experience. Making use of the process of the therapeutic relationship, the professional nurse is able to positively influence the memes held by persons living with DM and assist them in achieving a greater level of personal responsibility. The therapeutic relationship is potentially influenced by all three of the strategies described above. This study provides insight into the experiences of persons living with DM and of the diabetes nurse educators who assist them in Nelson Mandela Bay. Recommendations regarding the implementation of a National Diabetes Policy on a macro level are made, as well as recommendations for nursing practice, education and research. The strategies which were evaluated by an Expert Panel provide a tool for the professional nurse to use while assisting persons living with DM by facilitating the growth of personal responsibility leading to self-management.

Farias, Eldia Carla. "CREATIVE TREATMENT OF FOLK MELODIES IN SELECTED CIRANDINHAS AND CIRANDAS OF HEITOR VILLA-LOBOS". UKnowledge, 2015. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/music_etds/48.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This study provides a comparative analysis and performance suggestions for three Cirandinhas and three Cirandas for solo piano by Heitor Villa-Lobos in order to demonstrate their aesthetic and pedagogical value. The primary objective is to argue for the significance of the Cirandas as concert works and of the Cirandinhas as didactic ones. To better explore these two sets of pieces and their interconnections, the selected Ciranda-Cirandinhas pairs are all based on the same folksong theme. Thus, the analyses also demonstrate Villa-Lobos’s desire to represent Brazilian culture through his music and the ingenuity with which he treated the same melodic material within performative and pedagogical contexts. Heitor Villa-Lobos is recognized as the most significant creative figure in twentieth-century Brazilian art music and as one of the distinguished Latin American composers to date. His distinctive compositional style represents a thorough synthesis of influences from European art music with the African, Indo-American, and cosmopolitan urban idioms of Brazilian vernacular music. Villa-Lobos’s output comprises more than 2000 compositions in a wide variety of genres: symphonies, concertos, operas, chamber music, art songs, and solo piano music. Throughout his career, he was a devoted supporter of music education for young people and of the development of a distinctively Brazilian art-musical tradition. The Cirandinhas and Cirandas represent an intersection of these two concerns. This study will be meaningful to both performers and piano teachers, whom it will encourage to include Villa-Lobos’s works within their concert repertory or teaching curricula. The document includes an introduction, a brief contextualized biography of the composer, a comparative analysis of the selected Cirandinhas and Ciranda with performance suggestions that touches on stylistic, pedagogical, and technical features of the pieces; a conclusion; appendices that include a chronological list of Villa-Lobos’s piano works and the titles and translations of all the Cirandinhas and Cirandas; and a bibliography.

Abstract: Chronic wound is still a challenge for medicine, either to define its cause and for selecting an optimal treatment. Healing is a long and complex process. It involves adherence to the treatment by the patient, the reaction of the organism to the therapeutic treatment, the patient's behavior regarding wound care, handling the dressing, and general aspects to maintain health, especially if there are other chronic diseases. Social, economic and cultural demands can also generate strong influences upon the treatment of wounds and healing process, since the population, in general, believes in myths, misconceptions and prejudices about wound healing, a knowledge that has been passed on empirically for generations, which may be harmless or extremely harmful. The objective of this study was to correlate socio-demographic and educational factors as predictors for the occurrence of chronic wounds, comparing healthy individuals with patients with chronic wounds. Two semistructured instruments were employed; a questionnaire, specific and customized, seeking socio demographic data, knowledge about chronic wounds, medical treatment of wounds, alternative and unconventional therapies and knowledge about bio-curative. Two populations were delimited: Group 1 - constituted by the healthy population, in general, and Group 2 - constituted by people with chronic wounds. It was observed that both groups are aware of some kind of home treatment to treat wounds, but they do not have sufficient knowl... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

The work of separation of recycled materials in the district of Tangará da Serra is a practice that accompanied the birth and development of the city. With passing of the years it is noticed the presence of the interest of the public power and the community in relation to the importance of the reciclagem work developed in the municipal district in the socia aspects, environmental and generation of income. Starting from the need of the construction of the Municipal Sanitary Embankment, the interest with relationship to the workers that made the separation of the domestic garbage, was still individually more evident. In that sense, the general objective of the work was:contribute to building knowledge about the process of transition from individual work to the collective work in the sector of solid waste collection. The specific objectives were: understand the creation and the development of COOPERTAN in the district of Tangará da Serra-MT, analyze the development of the collective work process in COOPERTAN, make a comparative between the individual work and the collective work in the district, understand how the workers of COOPERTAN notice the differences between the individual work and the collective work after the formalization of the cooperative and to identify the strong points and the challenges for the cooperative. The used methodology was the participant research, through accompaniment of the work, meetings, assemblies and the formation of the group in the thematic of cooperatives in selective collection of the domestic garbage and organization of the work. The research demonstrated fragility and difficulty of collective organization and lack of technical formation of the workers. It was also noticed difficulties of the supporting institutions act with coherence, according to the needs and the specificities of the analyzed group. It is worth to point out that, in spite of so many difficulties in that resource, the great majority of those cooperated, mainly the founders that continue in the group, like what they do, they feel pride of the work and they present great expectation and persistence in the search of the autonomy and good results of the enterprise.

Baz, Shereen. "The trajectory of sex offenders through the Lebanese criminal justice system : a tale of human rights violations". Thesis, Loughborough University, 2016. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/21717.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This study aims to examine the trajectory of sex offenders through the Lebanese criminal justice system while highlighting various human rights violations. It attempts to fill in the gaps within the literature through building on the existing research and by examining the processes and experiences of arrest, detention, court, prison and release. Recently, numerous scholars have argued that most criminal justice systems are following a popular punitive trend rather than focusing on rehabilitation. This study through its focus on human rights violations, participants attitudes and beliefs as well as issues of rehabilitation and treatment of prisoners firmly places Lebanon within the global trend of popular punitiveness. Seventy-three interviews were carried out with sex offenders, police officers, prison guards, judges and lawyers within Lebanon. These qualitative interviews captured criminal justice professionals and offenders experiences, attitudes and perceptions surrounding sex offending and the criminal justice system. The thematic analysis of the interviews specifically focused on uncovering how sex offenders moved through and were dealt with by the Lebanese criminal justice system. Human rights violations were found to be abundant at the various stages of the criminal justice system. Participants highlighted events such as the excessive use of torture within police stations as well as prisons, the use of forced confessions, and the lack of legal representation. Numerous factors were found to play a role in conceding the copious violations of sex offenders rights occurring at the various stages of the criminal justice system. These factors included corruption, the lack of accountability, police culture, the commonly held belief that offenders are undeserving of human rights, the lack of training, and religion. In investigating the structure and the functioning of the criminal justice system, it became evident that religion played a vital role. Religion dictated professionals positions within the criminal justice system and influenced participants beliefs and attitudes surrounding sex offenders. Because of its influence, religion played a vital role in paving the way for the re-occurrence of human right violations. For example, religion granted the criminalisation of homosexuality and the act of de-virginizing as well as legalising marital rape, all of which result in human rights violations. In order to move Lebanon, and other punitive countries, towards a more rehabilitative criminal justice approach, this study highlights the importance of training, change in legislation, as well as the separation of religion from law.

Nouwade, Gamèli. "La vindicte populaire et le droit pénal". Electronic Thesis or Diss., Université Clermont Auvergne (2021-...), 2021. http://www.theses.fr/2021UCFAD036.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
In spite of the serious attacks on the social order, mob justice has never been the subject of an in-depth legal study in order to receive the appropriate penal response. Indeed, although the phenomenon mobilizes researchers beyond the legal sciences, there are no specific legal studies on the issue. However, the vindictive phenomenon persists, evolving moreover from the physical form to the digital form, with as a consequence a considerable increase in the number of victims, a sign of a more and more important delinquency. However, as far as positive law is concerned, the contours, manifestations, modes of expression and motivations of this form of delinquency are still undetermined. However, the public authorities cannot effectively combat a criminal phenomenon that they do not control. Our research has therefore endeavored to study the relationship that criminal law has with vindictive delinquency. It proposes a diagnosis and then lines of thought for a penal treatment of popular vindictiveness. It has been noted that the test between popular vindictiveness and criminal law is sulphurous and rough, very rich but very intriguing: it is a dangerous connection. More concretely, popular vindictiveness expresses itself in the face of criminal law and criminal law represses it in its turn. In its expression, it emerges from our study that, like covid 19, the virus of vindictiveness from which the social body suffers contains multiple variants, which makes its understanding and apprehension difficult. The modes of expression of popular vindictiveness have therefore been identified, a definition proposed and means of prevention identified. In its drive to repress the phenomenon of vindictiveness, criminal law is struggling to find its bearings. It has tried, not without difficulty, to curb the phenomenon by adapting as much as by innovating. But the tools used at present are not very effective. It is thus a timid criminal law that is undergoing the assaults of a dynamic, protean and mutant vindictiveness. It has been suggested to rethink the penal response by making mob justice a special incrimination with a special regime of responsibility

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractHuman epidermal receptor type 2 (HER2; also known as ErbB2) is an idea target for target therapy. HER2-targeted treatments with trastuzumab and its derivates or analogues can improve the overall survival of patients with HER2-overexpression tumors. This chapter describes the construction and clinical translational study of 64Cu-NOTA-Trastuzumab, 124I-Trastuzumab, and 68Ga-HER2 affibody tracer. Inspired by recently most popular peptide receptor radionuclide therapy with lutetium-177 dotatate (177Lu-DOTATATE) for advanced gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (GEP-NETs) and 177Lu-PSMA-617 for metastatic castration resistant prostate cancer therapy (mCRPC), the establishment of affibody receptor radionuclide therapy (ARRT) has the potential to provide an alternative treatment option for future HER2 positive resistant patients.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThe end of the covid-19 epidemic has revealed many weaknesses in the health system and the medical waste treatment process. In particular, the ineffective treatment of medical waste has also contributed to the explosion in the number of infections in some countries (i.e., India, Brazil, and Vietnam). Several studies have found that even developed countries (i.e., with better infrastructure and health services than the world average) have to face emergencies during this time. epidemic. Therefore, the amount of medical waste dumped into the environment is extremely terrible. The waste generated suddenly during this period includes protective gear, masks, and vaccines that burden the waste treatment process. There are several approaches to exploiting Blockchain technologies to solve the problem of direct contact between the stages: medical staff - transportation staff - waste disposal staff to minimize unintended spread. However, to thoroughly solve the current waste classification and treatment processes, a more reward/punishment solution is needed. Specifically, we propose a model to assess the compliance/violation level of waste sorting and treatment in medical centers and isolation areas based on current popular technologies: blockchain, smart contracts, and NFTs.

AbstractSince the end of the nineteenth century, fat grafting has become one of the most promising treatments for posttraumatic deformities and more in general for scars. Its easy application and collection have made it as the ideal therapy to restore volume and pliability, and contour and to prevent symptoms as pain. In these years the application method, the indications and the guidelines have been changed many times. In this chapter, we analyze why fat grafting is becoming so popular in the twentieth century and what is the scientific rational to use autologous adipose tissue. We will also discuss the current guidelines and the possible applications. At the end, we will also present some new fields such as the application of autologous fat grafting in the treatment of the hypertrophic scars and how we can try to improve its engraftment using external mechanical forces (the external negative pressure therapy) and/or the plasma-rich platelet (PRP).

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter introduces the concept of the “popular story”, a combination of the dramatisations of the Titanic’s fate in literature and film, and survivor accounts that fail to include representations of the third class. It defines the popular story as an impressionistic narrative of events patched together from first class passengers and top officers, offering no voice to the third class or control over their own representation. The author applies Foucault’s theory of “Dangerous Individuals” - where danger is implicit to social status - to the treatment and representation of third class men in Titanic narratives. It questions the authenticity of the popular story by scrutinising the British Inquiry testimonies, and examines the open racism of naval officers; the depiction of class in Walter Lord’s 1955 novel ‘A Night to Remember’; the lack of third class testimonies in the British Inquiry, and the dubious testimony of John Edward Hart - which nevertheless was absorbed into the narrative, to conclude that the third class passengers are pervasively portrayed in both history and popular culture as both intrinsically helpless and intrinsically dangerous - who, after being released from gated corridors, swarmed the top deck seeking rescue and causing havoc.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract This chapter focuses on the numerous popular songs as musical quotations that are integrated into Godard’s films and video productions in a self-reflexive manner. In Une femme est une femme, the female protagonist and her male friend listen in a bar to Charles Aznavour’s “Tu t’laisses aller,” which appears—as a rarity in Godard’s films—in its entirety. Godard’s shift from the performance aspect in musical comedies to the focus on listening is intended as a self-conscious strategy. Godard conveys with Aznavour’s song that listening is as important an activity as performing songs in musical films. A second self-reflexive treatment of songs denounces the striving for impeccable and stunning song performances of Hollywood’s studio era. Godard introduces intentional imperfections into the song renderings in his films. A lackluster vocal performance, inferior recording quality, and a rough editing style, as markers of self-reflexivity, are noticeable in Anna Karina’s rendering of Jean Ferrat’s “J’entends, j’entends” in Bande à part. A final investigation explores Riccardo Cocciante’s “La nostra lingua italiana,” which concludes Chapter 3A of Godard’s Histoire(s) du cinéma. Cocciante’s song is metafilm music for three reasons: (1) Its musical style as a popular, somewhat sentimental ballad resists in aesthetical terms the intention of Godard’s metacinematic approach to film history. (2) The song’s integration into Histoire(s) du cinéma represents the only musical quotation in its complete form in the entire essayistic series. (3) The canzone is actively involved, in close conjunction with the other filmic devices, in exploring cinema’s theory, aesthetics, history, and practice, in particular the impact of neorealism on the history of cinema.

While the abuses committed by the interrogators were real, horrific, and deserving of punishment, this chapter shows how the interrogators were disproportionately blamed, as they lacked the access and influence to alter the normative framework around detainee treatment. Four major themes emerge to explain interrogation practices, including: relying on past guidance or popular influences, abusing detainees due to the belief that higher authorities approved it, maltreatment due to the absence of direction, and retribution for 9/11. Lastly, the DoD and CIA interrogators had vastly different historical precedents for their actions.

Abstract (sommario):
Computations are performed in conjunction with code validation quality experiments found in the open literature to specifically address the usage of popular two-equation eddy viscosity models in day-to-day gas turbine applications. In such simulations many features such as pressure gradients, curvature effects are present. The present work is focused on testing a popular turbulence model to resolve film cooling on curved surfaces. A systematic computational methodology has been employed in order to minimize numerical errors and evaluate the performance of a popular turbulence model. The test cases were examined for a single row of holes, blowing rates ranging from 1 to 2.5, isolated effects of convex and concave curvature on film cooling, density ratio close to 2, and an injection angle of 35°. Key aspects of the study include: (1) extremely dense, high quality, multi-block, multi-topology grid involving over 3 million finite volumes; (2) higher order discretization; (3) turbulence model with two-layer near-wall treatment; (4) strict convergence criteria; and (5) grid independence. A fully-implicit, pressure-correction Navier-Stokes solver is used to obtain all the solutions. Results for adiabatic cooling effectiveness are compared with measurements in order to document the: (1) Range of applicability of the present modeling capability; and (2) Possible reasons for discrepancies. The data shows that the computations predicted the effects of curvature on mean flow, however effect on turbulence field is not captured. A clear set of recommendations is provided for future treatments of this class of problems.

Abstract (sommario):
Application of thermal therapy using microwave or ultrasound applicators is becoming increasingly popular as a minimally invasive treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Successful management of the therapy using such methods requires an accurate estimation of the thermal dosage. The purpose of this study is to theoretically evaluate the thermal damage caused by different heating sources for different values of thermal doses and operating parameters. Using a 3-D finite differences method, the Pennes bio-heat transfer equation is solved for selected operating parameters. Necrosis zones are then determined from published necrosis data for prostatic tumor cells. Sample results are presented in terms of the temperature contours and necrosis zones. Results indicate that heating time and power level are the most important parameters in creating the desired necrosis zones, while coolant parameters strongly affect the temperatures of the sensitive urethra and serve as constraints for protocol parameters.

Abstract Local post welding heat treatment (PWHT) is a popular method to reduce the residual stress of bigger weld structures. In this paper, the weld residual stresses before and after local PWHT were investigated. The results show that there are larger axial stresses concentration in weld toe and an inconsistent deformation along axial direction during heating stage which may leads to crack. The residual stresses in outer surface are decreased greatly after local PWHT. An optimized local PWHT with auxiliary heating (AH) temperature 800°C and width 800mm were proposed. The axial stress and deformation inconsistent in weld can be reduced by AH, thus leads to the reduction of crack risk in weld toe.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The aluminum-magnesium-silicon alloy 6201-T81 is a popular electrical conductor, widely used for overhead and distribution lines. Its light weight makes its mass conductivity twice that of copper. Aluminum conductors however experience creep, corrosion, power loss, and other drawbacks. Therefore, it has become a necessity for manufacturers to improve mechanical and electrical properties. The alloy 6201-T81 is an age hardenable alloy, in which a controlled precipitation of Mg2Si is performed through two different successive heat treatments: Solution heat treatment and precipitation heat treatment. ∅ 3.5 mm wires of the alloy were solution heat treated at 510 °C for an hour, quenched in ice water, and precipitation heat treated at the temperature range 150–200°C for the time range 2–24 h. Results show that strength and hardness increase with aging time at the precipitation heat treatment temperatures 150 °C, 165 °C, and 175 °C, but decreased with aging time at 185 °C and 200 °C. The increase was due to the precipitation of finely and uniformly coherent needle-like Mg2Si precipitates, β″. The decrease was due to the precipitation of the semi-coherent and incoherent rod-like Mg2Si precipitates β′ and β, respectively. Electrical conductivity increases with the aging temperature and time. Maximum conductivity was 60 %IACS obtained after treatments (185°C, 18h), (200 °C, 13h), and (200 °C, 24h. Optimum mechanical properties were obtained after the treatment (165 °C, 18 h) (313 MPa, 8%, 95 HV, and 57.7 %IACS). Optical micrographs verified the correlation between the microstructural grain size and both the mechanical and electrical properties.

Abstract (sommario):
Review question / Objective: HF (heart failure) is considered to be the clinical endpoint and the leading cause of death of CVD (cardiovascular diseases). With people's growing desire for a healthy and better life, TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) as an alternative in the prevention and treatment of HF is becoming more popular. The basic and clinical research related to TCM has also been widely concerned by the cardiovascular community of scientists/clinicians. In recent years, a large number of preclinical (in vivo/in vitro) experiments and clinical observation studies have proved the therapeutic efficacy of Danshen decoction in the treatment of HF. However, systematic evaluation and review of the clinical treatment of Danshen decoction is insufficient, leaving objective and quantitative evaluation indicators of Danshen decoction to be inadequate. Therefore, evidence-based studies are urgently needed to demonstrate its efficacy and safety.

Abstract (sommario):
Randomized controlled trials, prized for generating unbiased estimates of treatment effects, have become popular in development economics. However, RCTs do not always offer sufficient statistical power, which is reduced in experiments with imperfect compliance to treatment assignment. This is of critical importance if effect sizes are modest, and if non-compliance may occur. Both are likely in experiments in center-based childcare programs with individual-level randomization for several reasons. Dropout in the treatment group may occur because families' demand for preschool is unknown when the sample is constructed, and it evolves over time as households experience shocks and as they learn about the center. Non-compliance in the control group arises when children access the program or alternative preschool programs. This paper uses a recent evaluation of the Hogares Comunitarios program in Guatemala to illustrate challenges inherent in experimental evaluations and offers strategies to identify situations in which studies are more likely to succeed.

Review question / Objective: To compile evidence and determine the utility of various methods used to sanitize footwear and textiles, and the use of novel antimicrobial materials for eradication of pathogens known to cause superficial fungal infections of the foot. Rationale: Fungal infections of the feet such as onychomycosis are common, affecting approximately 6% of the global population. There are a number of available treatment methods for onychomycosis, with topical (e.g., efinaconazole, tavaborole, ciclopirox), oral (e.g., terbinafine, itraconazole, fluconazole), or a combination of both, being the most popular. Sanitization of shoes, socks/stockings, and other textiles (as well as the feet themselves through proper hygiene) is integral to the reduction, spread, and recurrence of superficial fungal infection. The goal of the present review is to examine the currently available methods of sanitization for footwear and textiles against superficial fungal infections, and assessing which are effective or not.

Review question / Objective: Gallbladder cancer is a rare tumor that is mostly advanced once detected. The efficacy of surgical treatment is still controversial. Therefore, primary prevention of gallbladder cancer is important. There are many studies on risk factors for gallbladder cancer, but at present it is difficult to identify independent risk factors for gallbladder cancer, except for a history of symptomatic chronic cholecystitis and malignant transformation of a single polyp. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is popular worldwide and can be a preventive procedure for gallbladder cancer in addition to resolving benign lesions. This study makes a meta-analysis of the latest research results exploring the risk factors of gallbladder cancer in the last decade , expecting to provide evidence-based medical support for the prevention of gallbladder cancer at the clinical level, and to provide some ideas to guide the surgical indications for LC and future research related to gallbladder cancer. Walmsley, Terrie, e Peter Minor. MyGTAP Model: A Model for Employing Data from the MyGTAP Data Application—Multiple Households, Split Factors, Remittances, Foreign Aid and Transfers. GTAP Working Paper, dicembre 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.21642/gtap.wp78.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The GTAP standard model has proved a useful analysis tool and data source for over 20 years. The GTAP model has been updated overtime, but it maintains the structure of a single regional household, with income distributed into three components: government, private and savings-investment expenditures. There has been a need for a more detailed accounting system, especially as it relates to estimating the potential impacts of policies and global shocks on poverty, sustainable and inclusive growth. This paper presents an extension to the GTAP model and its accounting framework to implement distinct and multiple households, split factors of production, foreign aid and remittances, government and household transfer. The model and associated accounting links a household’s expenditure to factor incomes (through ownership shares) and taxes. Government expenditure is linked to taxes and foreign aid. The MyGTAP model provides the user more flexibility in: the treatment of government and household savings and spending; the selection of a linear expenditure systems (LES) or a constant difference of elasticities (CDE) demand function\s. The model is incorporated into a RunGTAP application which supports many of RunGTAP’s popular programs such as alter-tax, GTAPview and others. The introduction of a split regional household (which does not require splitting data for every region) supports economic analysis based on detailed households, government, factor income, remittances, foreign aid and income transfers. The code can be modified to include multiple regions with unique household structures. This paper documents the model and accounting framework for the use of data output from the MyGTAP data splitting program. Abstract (sommario):
The objective of this research project was to evaluate the involvement of antioxidant enzymes and genes in the resistance mechanism to postharvest superficial scald development using two primary systems: 1. Resistant and susceptible progenies of an apple cross between a scald resistant crab apple, ‘White Angel’ and a scald susceptible cultivar, ‘Rome Beauty’; 2. Heat-treatment of ‘Granny Smith’, which is known to reduce scald development in this cultivar. In 2002 we asked for, and received (October 14), permission to revise our initial objectives. The US side decided to expand their results to include further work using commercial cultivars. Also, both sides wanted to include an emphasis on the interaction between these antioxidant enzymes and the á-farnesene pathway, with the cooperation of a third party, Dr. Bruce Whitaker, USDA-ARS, Beltsville. Background: Superficial scald is a physiological storage disorder that causes damage to the skin of apple and pear fruit. It is currently controlled by use of an antioxidant, diphenylamine (DPA), applied postharvest by drenching or dips, but concern exists about such chemical usage especially as it also involves application of fungicides. As a result, there has been increased emphasis on understanding of the underlying mechanisms involved in disorder development. Our approach was to focus on the oxidative processes that occur during scald development, and specifically on using the two model systems described above to determine if the levels of specific antioxidants and/or antioxidant enzyme activities correlated with the presence/absence of scald. It was hoped that information about the role of antioxidant-defense mechanisms would lead to identification of candidate genes for future transgenic manipulation. Major conclusions, solutions, achievements: Collectively, our results highlight the complexity of superficial scald developmental processes. Studies involving comparisons of antioxidant enzyme activities in different crab apple selection, commercial cultivars, and in response to postharvest heat and 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) treatments, show no simple direct relationships with antioxidant contents and susceptibility of fruit to scald development. However, a correlative relationship was found between POX activity or isoenzyme number and scald resistance in most of the studies. This relationship, if confirmed, could be exploited in breeding for scald resistance. In addition, our investigations with key genes in the á-farnesenebiosynthetic pathway, together with antioxidant processes, are being followed up by analysis of exposed and shaded sides of fruit of cultivars that show different degrees of scald control by 1-MCP. These data may further reveal productive areas for future research that will lead to long term control of the disorder. However, given the complexity of scald development, the greatest research need is the production of transgenic fruit with down-regulated genes involved in á- farnesene biosynthesis in order to test the currently popular hypothesis for scald development.

Abstract (sommario):
Wastewater sludge contains essential nutrients for plant growth and is frequently used as fertilizer in European agriculture. Sludge contains elevated concentrations of heavy metals, microplastics, and other substances that may pose potential risks to human health and the environment. Nevertheless, dried pelletized sludge emerges as a viable product for fertilizing short-rotation poplar plantations within a circular model, enabling nutrient recycling and converting waste into a valuable resource to enhance biomass production for different markets. In Hillebola, central Sweden, we demonstrated the application of dried pelletized sludge to pilot plantations with climate-adapted Populus trichocarpa clones. The trial was established in four blocks with four treatments three years after the poplar trees were planted. The treatments were: mineral NPK fertilizer + soil cultivation between poplar rows, dried pelletized sludge + soil cultivation, no fertilization + soil cultivation only, and control (no treatments). The effect of fertilization on poplar growth was evaluated two years later, after the fifth growing season. The results showed a significantly improved basal area increment in NPK and sludge treatments compared to the control. The ground vegetation inventory revealed substantial differences in weed biomass between control and cultivated plots. Control plots contained double the amount of aboveground grass and herbaceous biomass (8.6 ton ha-1 ) compared to cultivated and cultivated + fertilized plots. The low-intensity Nordic-Baltic poplar establishment practices allow for a substantial amount of ground vegetation to develop until the canopy closure, potentially contributing to the soil carbon pool more than it is usually recognized when modeling carbon balances in short-rotation poplar plantations, which is the theme of our next report.
