Abstract (sommario):
Horses and their owners participate in an increasingly diverse range of equestrian pursuits including such activities as racing, show-jumping, endurance riding, carriage driving, dressage, hunting, pony club games, polo and leisure trekking. The majority of owners and riders within the disciplines of equitation appear to have a general preference toward using male horses as the chosen competition animal. Although not exclusively so, stallions and geldings are quite often physically bigger and stronger than fillies and mares and may enjoy some athletic advantage as a result. However, it is known from studies involving humans and small laboratory animals (mice and rats) that some gender differences in cognitive function may also affect performance where tasks involve 3-dimensional objects and elements of depth perception (Morris, Garrud, Rawlins, and O’ Keefe, 1982). The horse has laterally placed eyes (Budiansky, 1997 and Figure 1) and therefore a stereoscopic (binocular) visual field of approximately 65-70°.

Abstract (sommario):
This essay draws together the disciplines of race theory, artificial intelligence, and phenomenology to engage the issue of racism as a learned phenomenon. More specifically, it centres on a comparison between robots and humans with respect to becoming racist. The purpose of this comparison is to illustrate the complex interconnections between racism, ontology, and learning. The essay begins with a discussion of race and racism that identifies both fundamentally as social realities. With this account, the essay draws on Hubert Dreyfus’ critical phenomenological work on artificial intelligence to outline several limitations for robots becoming racist. Next, the essay turns to the phenomenology of Merleau-Ponty as an ontological alternative for describing human beings and how racism is learned through habit and skill acquisition. In the end, it is suggested that this investigation not only provides an insightful glimpse into racism as a learned phenomenon, but also invites further discussion on how such racism may be confronted when it is viewed not simply as a cognitive issue, but rather as an issue of embodiment.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose This paper aims to focus on the design, analysis and additive manufacturing (AM) with two different technologies of an accelerator pedal for the Formula Student 2014 edition to reduce the weight of the original pedal in aluminium and maintain a reasonable level of performance. Design/methodology/approach The new and the original accelerator pedals were modelled in a computer-aided design application, and three finite element simulations were performed for each manufacturing technology to evaluate three different driving scenarios. Later on, two physical prototypes were manufactured using two AM technologies: poly-jet and fused deposition modelling (FDM). With these physical prototypes, static tests were carried out to verify the computational simulations and to determine the fracture load, while dynamic tests, based on an input signal from a real racing scenario, were performed to ensure their technical viability. Findings Simulations with poly-jet and FDM printing material show that the new design presents a maximum deformation of 4.8 and 4.09 mm, respectively, under a nominal load of 150N. The results of the static tests with the poly-jet physical prototype showed a maximum displacement of 4.05 mm under a nominal load of 150N, while the ultimate load before fracture was 450N. The FDM prototype reached 3.98 mm under 150N and the ultimate load was 350N. Dynamic tests showed that both pedals were able to withstand four Formula Student “Endurance” events without failure. Originality/value This paper states that AM approach is a feasible and economically affordable solution in comparison to exiting solutions with metallic alloys and composite materials when designing and manufacturing accelerator pedal arms for Formula Student competition cars. According to these results, the present research argues that, from a technical point of view, the AM pedals stand at a reasonable level of performance in displacements and stresses. This study suggests that AM pedals could be a viable option that must be considered in professional competitive automobiles.

Abstract (sommario):
This article assesses how the discriminatory practice of racial profiling exists and can undermine a human rights-based system of immigration control in Northern Ireland. Post-Brexit there is a possibility that this practice may increase in Northern Ireland, given that it shares a border with another European Union (EU) State. This article will centrally argue that immigration checks which take place on an ad-hoc basis in a State should be prohibited because the risks of discriminatory practices are too high. However, if they are to take place, it will be contended that attempts to stop and question individuals for immigration checking should be subject to greater control and accountability. For example, by restricting the remit under which checks can take place, and by increasing the powers of the Police Ombudsman of Northern Ireland (poni) to receive complaints concerning immigration agents. This article will explore whether enhanced surveillance of Border Force could take place by requiring agents to wear body-worn cameras in order to prevent racial profiling.

Abstract (sommario):
What resources does Merleau-Ponty’s account of the body schema offer to the Fanonian one? First I show that Merleau-Ponty’s theory of the body schema is already a theory of affect: one that does not oppose affects to intentionality, positioning them not only as sense but as force, cultivating affective agencies rather than constituting static sense content. Then I argue that by foregrounding the role of affect in both thinkers, we can understand the way in which the historical-racial schema innovates, anticipating and influencing feminist theories of the affective turn – especially Sara Ahmed’s theory of affective economies. The historical-racial schema posits the constitution of affective agencies on a sociogenic scale, and these affective economies in turn account for the possibility of the collapse of the body schema into a racial epidermal schema, a disjunction of affective intentionality Fanon calls “affective tetanization.”

Abstract (sommario):
Objectives: In this study, we examine the prevalence and demographic, social, and behavioral characteristics associated with college students' exposure to and engagement with tobaccorelated social media, in a diverse sample from the Marketing and Promotions Across Colleges in Texas Study (N = 4384). Methods: We used multiple logistic regression to examine cross-sectional associations between characteristics and exposure and engagement. Results: Overall, 30% of students reported past 30-day exposure to tobacco advertising on social media. Exposure was greatest for e-cigarette advertisements on Facebook. A total of 23% reported engagement. Anti-engagement activities, like posting links to anti-tobacco messaging, were more prevalent than pro-engagement. Racial/ethnic minorities, 2-year college students, dual/poly-users, higher social media users, students with friends who use tobacco, and students with higher depressive symptoms were significantly more likely to report exposure. Racial/ethnic minorities, sexual/gender minorities, 2-year college students, dual/poly-users, higher social media users, and students with higher depressive symptoms were more likely to report pro-engagement. Sexual/gender minorities, non-users and dual/poly-users (vs single-product users), higher social media users, students with friends who use tobacco, and students with higher depressive symptoms were more likely to report anti-engagement. Females were more likely to report hookah advertising exposure and anti-tobacco engagement. Conclusions: We discuss the regulatory and practical implications.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Background: The role of paraoxonase 1 enzyme (PON1) and its single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in children with nephrotic syndrome (NS) has been reported previously in different ethnic and racial groups with divergent results. The human PON1 gene contains two coding region polymorphisms leading to two different PON1 isoforms. Objectives: The aim of the present study was to find out the association between the PON1 (Q192R and L55M) polymorphisms and their relation with serum PON1 activity as well as lipid profile tests (total cholesterol, TC; triglycerides, TG; high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, HDL-c; and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, LDL-c) in children with NS. Methods: This study included a total of 80 participants (40 with NS in the age group of 2-14 years and 40 age and sex-matched healthy controls). The PON1 enzyme activity and lipid profile tests were measured in serum samples of all included participants. The PON1 genotype was determined by PCR-restriction enzyme fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) for both PON1 alleles (192 and 55) SNPs. Results: Our findings showed that the mean levels of lipid profile tests (TC, TG, LDL-c) were significantly increased in patients when compared with healthy controls (p<0.05), while the HDL-c concentration was significantly decreased in patients than that of controls. Also, the patients had significantly lower concentrations of PON1 when compared with the controls regardless of the genotype Q192R and L55M polymorphisms. Moreover, the homozygous RR genotype for PON1 SNP 192 and MM homozygous genotype for PON1 SNP 55 were significantly frequent in patients when compared with the controls. Conclusions: Our results support that the presence of the homozygous RR genotype for PON1 SNP 192 and MM homozygous genotype for PON1 SNP 55 were significantly higher in patients compared with the controls.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper contributes new theoretical and empirical knowledge to a relatively under researched area, that of the experience and management of emotions and mental health of sports workers. Set within the field of interspecies sports work this paper uses autophenomenography to demonstrate the application of phenomenology within sociology as both a methodological approach and a theoretical framework. It focuses on the personal and working life of a sports worker in horse racing who, through emotional trauma and mental ill health, loses her ‘feel for the game’ (Bourdieu, 1992), the unconscious bodily dispositions and automatic performance that form an integral part of sports work. It examines how practically embodied attitudes and dispositions can return through working with and exercising racehorses. Using the work of Merleau-Ponty my aim is to explore how human-nonhuman animal intercorporeality acts as a catalyst to regaining a ‘feel for the game.’

Abstract (sommario):
Q192R and L55M polymorphism were considered to be associated with the development of multiple cancers. Nevertheless, the results of these researches were inconclusive and controversial. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis of all eligible case-control studies to assess the association between PON1 (Q192R and L55M) gene polymorphisms and risk of cancer. With the STATA 14.0 software, we evaluated the strength of the association by using the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). A total of 43 case-control publications 19887 cases and 23842 controls were employed in our study. In all genetic models, a significant association between PON1-L55M polymorphisms and overall cancer risk was observed. Moreover, in the stratified analyses by cancer type, polymorphism of PON1-L55M played a risk factor in the occurrence of breast cancer, hematologic cancer, and prostate cancer. Similarly, an increased risk was observed in the Caucasian and Asian population as well as hospital-based group and population-based group. For PON1-Q192R polymorphisms, in the stratified analyses by cancer type, PON1-Q192R allele was associated with reduced cancer risks in breast cancer. Furthermore, for racial stratification, there was a reduced risk of cancer in recession model in Caucasian population. Similarly, in the stratification analysis of control source, the overall risk of cancer was reduced in the heterozygote comparison and dominant model in the population-based group. In conclusion, PON1-Q192R allele decreased the cancer risk especially breast cancer; there was an association between PON1-L55M allele and increased overall cancer risk. However, we need a larger sample size, well-designed in future and at protein levels to confirm these findings.

Abstract (sommario):
María Magdalena Campos-Pons (b. 1959, Matanzas, Cuba) is a Cuban artist with Yoruba (Nigerian), Chinese, and Spanish roots. She is also a black US-based artist. Known for performative and installation-based work as well as photography, paintings, and videos in which her body functions as resource, medium, and site, she has recently turned to more metaphorical representations of the body. History and memory, as well as the ritual (Lucumí or Santería) and material culture of her enslaved Nigerian and indentured Chinese ancestors brought to Cuba in the nineteenth century to work in the island’s sugar plantation system, have been key touchstones for her work. Since the 1990s she has frequently employed sugar as a material for critically exploring the complex workings of colonialism. Alchemy of the Soul, Elixir for the Spirits, commissioned by the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts, in 2015, is the most recent of her sugar works. The installation explored, metaphorically, the distillation of New England rum from Cuban sugar. This paper examines it in relation to Campos-Pons’s persistent interests, such as forced removal, migration, trade networks, memory, Lucumí/Santería, mestizaje, transculturation, and racism. It also examines the installation’s site to argue that the work explores black being in distinct but interrelated contexts: Cuba and New England. A powerful conjunction of objects, site, and performance, the work directed attention to a New England exceptionalism that persists in framing slavery’s violence as elsewhere.

Abstract (sommario):
Diversidade. Autonomia. Convivialidade. Abstract (sommario):
Michael Altman’s Heathen, Hindoo, Hindu offers a major contribution to the history of Hinduism in America, as it revises the standard “Transcendentalist-Theosophist-Vivekananda-1965” trajectory with a critical eye toward the nationalist and orientalist discourses of formative episodes from the Colonial era up to Chicago’s World Parliament (xvii). Altman’s genealogical approach presumes no essence or definition of ‘Hinduism,’ which both suits his source materials and serves his interest in classification quite well. Throughout this history, a rich set of examples shows how ‘hazy notions’ of Indian religion variously served as discursive foils and straw-men against white, Protestant American identity¬–from scathing missionary accounts of barbaric ‘Juggernaut’ worship (30), to the racial hierarchies in American geography schoolbooks (59), Thoreau’s Walden Pond as a River Ganges (86), and the Indian-derived, but not Hindu, ‘wisdom religion’ of the Theosophical Society (109). As Altman convincingly argues, when white, Protestant Americans talked about religion in India, “they were not really talking about religion in India. They were talking about themselves” (xxi), and thereby constituting their own racial, national, and religious identities (140).

Abstract (sommario):
It is frequently remarked that Merleau-Ponty did not write about race, gender, or anti-Semitism. Overall, this is true, but the relatively recent re-publication of his Sorbonne lectures, along with some new materials, shows that his lectures did address the issues of racism, sexism, and anti-Semitism. In addition, Emily Lee’s framing of Merleau-Ponty’s theory of the human body provides a useful way to understand its relationship to race and gender. While humans are fundamentally the same biologically, “secondary biological characteristics” such as skin color (and gender), situated in various social contexts, have a significant impact on the formation of one’s personal and social identity. What I seek to do here is find in Merleau-Ponty’s work the philosophical roots of Lee’s claim. I also seek to find the moral recognition of the other in Merleau-Ponty’s treatment of time and how his treatment of time relates to the two-dimensionality of the human body. It is this treatment that allows us to recognize the sameness of the other but that also allows us to recognize and respect differences.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Opponents of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgenders (LGBTs) have always been creative in expressing harassment, in which they emphasize their resentment of LGBTs’ “illegal” rights. In this modern era of technology, harassment is transmitted over digital applications. In light of new paradigms of defining cyberbullying, this research aims to describe the significant body of violent language, through which Arab LGBTs are attacked over Twitter. This is specifically important in building a corpus source for computational linguists working on a premature tracing of excluding language. Responses to 100 tweets posted by individuals affiliated with LGBT were analyzed to describe the precise act of discrimination. Results showed that Arab LGBTs experience prejudice against their sexual traits, mentality, poly-religious views, racial roots, and appearance via both verbal and visual means.

Abstract (sommario):
Beginning with Fanon’s challenge to the universality of the project of ontology, this paper considers whether and how Merleau-Ponty’s early and late thinking may yield a response. From the outset, Merleau-Ponty’s appeal to the materiality of the body is intended as a limit on the scope of ontology. As I argue, however, Merleau-Ponty’s early concept of ‘one’s own body’ (corps propre) suggests an “ontological equality” that would be shared among all embodied beings; implicitly, this early approach risks reinforcing Fanon’s concern that ontology is indifferent to embodied experiences of racial exclusion and oppression. Merleau-Ponty’s later ontology of the flesh, by contrast, entails a more radically differential structure of the body that troubles the notion of equality in principle, suggesting an ontology that could be more attentive to the fundamental grounds of systemic oppression.

ABSTRACTThe purpose of this article is to put experiences to dialogue and expand our understanding on education, focusing on actions and reflections based on antiracism and decoloniality. When looking for new pedagogies, epistemologies and ways of building knowledge, we are faced with the limits and bonds that coloniality places on us. We still have the naturalization of Eurocentric thinking, which provokes a shield in the ability to understand and recognize our cultural diversity as educational powers. From some reflections made in dialogue with authors, we were able to collaborate with more threads, colors and paths in the construction of anti-racist pedagogies. Once again we reinforce the need to experience educational processes that allow us to be and exist respecting, recognizing and valuing the diversity of knowledge based on the giras, in the corners, on the circles and in the plays that strengthen us to continue the journey.Education of ethnic-racial relations. Abstract (sommario):
This essay aims at proposing a study of Ralph Ellison’s novel Invisible Man (1952), where the author focuses on the difficult journey of black intellectuals in quest for a strong black identity in post-war America. The theoretical reflection in this paper is based, in a first phase, on the philosophical and political perspectives of thinkers such as Jean-Paul Sartre, Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Frantz Fanon, whose works and debates have articulated an important source to understand the quest of subjectivity and intellectual consciousness in the 1950s, a period marked not only by the emergence of civil rights movement and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, but also the progressive replacement of Communism by alternative emancipatory currents such as existentialism, postcolonialism and (post-) structuralism. From this discussion, the essay indicates, how (post-) Marxist thinkers, like Etienne Balibar, investigate the limits of the a priori paradigms promoted by the traditional humanistic (natural law-positive law) and communist narratives (alienation-emancipation), which lack conceptual and historical efficacy when it comes to understand and respond to new (bio-capitalist) forms of discrimination, which constantly evolve according to the epoch and the place.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Over the last few years, right-wing movements have proliferated among Western democracies. Although much of the growth has taken place across the “pond” in Europe, this phenomenon is not confined to that continent. As recent events make clear, the United States is another major case. In this essay, I offer a theory of the emergence of reactionary movements, fueled by status threat, using the United States as a case. To demonstrate the explanatory range of the theory (and measure), I focus on immigration, impeachment, and support for Donald Trump in the 2020 election. Examining self-identified Republicans only, I argue that status threat motivates the reactionary wing of the GOP in the United States. Drawing on data culled from a national sample, I find support for my expectation that, beyond ideology and racism, status threat furnishes a new explanation for reactionary preferences. I close with a discussion of the implications.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractResearch processes that are centered on western models and rooted in colonisation and racism can have deleterious effects upon disenfranchised groups, such as people of colour and indigenous communities. Community-centred and culturally-grounded processes are necessary to achieve meaningful participation and engagement in research by creating equitable protocols and ensuring beneficial outcomes. Such processes are particularly needed in indigenous populations, including the Hawaiian community. This article describes the participatory development of the community engagement protocols and rules of engagement created by a community and academic partnership called the Waimānalo Pono Research Hui (WPRH). Through monthly gatherings, academic and community partners engaged in discussions of constructing community programmes and developing research protocols that are rooted in Hawaiian wholistic values of health and well-being with indigenous methodologies. A final set of protocols and rules of engagement was developed through an iterative feedback process that was rooted not only in community-based participatory (CBPR) principles but also Hawaiian values, beliefs and way of life. Challenges and future directions are also presented.

Abstract (sommario):
The eel (Anguilla sp.) cultivation in Indonesia recently has just begun to develop, eventhough this species has so many economic prospect especially in eastern Asia and European countries. Aquaculture activities in some province (of Indoesia) still using earthen pond and only certain places which used Resirculating Aquaculure System (RAS) for racing the local eels. The aims of this study were to determine the effect of water volume on early elver of Anguilla bicolor bicolor length and weight growth and it’s corelations. Experimental method was used, complitely random design with 3 treatments of different water volumes i.e. E: 942 liter, F: 1413 liter, and G: 750 l. Sampling were taken every fortnight during 8 weeks culture. The results shows that length and weght growth have no significantly different (α > 0.05). Abstract (sommario):
Abstract: As the geopolitical disposition changed in 1898, Spain tried to articulate its Africanism as to justify and value its presence in the colonies left in Africa. This Africanism represented a political strategy that gave a humanist version of its own interests in the colonies. The case of Spanish Guinea brings up a story where this recreation have particular setbacks, as it was difficult to put together a common racial background. But, as the colony changed its status and economic significance, the strategy also changed, making it possible to dissolve the prior, rigid, racial differences deployed in statistic documents. This essay follows the discourses made from anthropology and governmental archives on indigenous Guinean identity, and studies how categories were mutating categories as to accept the colonial role of the Nation: from negative categories based on stereotypes of low profile for labor to assimilation and usefulness. The paper in centered on the confection of a colonial census (1950) and its feedback with anthropological discourses as to capture the colonial-administrative incursion and the representation of the Spanish in the geopolitical arena. Key words: Spanish Guinea, census, race, Africanism.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Adhesion-regulating molecule 1 (ADRM1) is a polyubiquitin receptor on the 26S proteasome. ADRM1 is upregulated in many cancers. In this study, we evaluated the potential prognostic and predictive value of ADRM1 in breast cancer patients. We determined the expression of ADRM1 and its relationship to breast cancer subtypes, using the Cancer Genome Atlas dataset that contained racial and clinical outcomes data totaling 1108 patients. The ADRM1 mRNA expression levels were divided into quartiles to designate the ADRM1 high versus low expression designation. Karanam et. al developed an orally available proteasome inhibitor bis-benzylidine piperidone (RA190), that binds to the ubiquitin receptor RPN13/ADRM1 on the 19S regulatory particle of the proteasome and directly kills cancer cells by triggering proteotoxic stress. RA190 binds to cysteine 88 of ADRM1/RPN13, triggering rapid accumulation of high-molecular-weight poly-ubiquitinated proteins resulting in apoptosis. Up284 is one of a second generation of small molecules that mimic RA190 activity. The objective of this study is to verify the role of ubiquitin receptor RPN13/ADRM1 in metastatic breast cancer samples of European American and African American patients and identify the safe combination of regimens of bortezomib in combination with Up289 to mitigate recurrence, metastasis and reduce mortality in AA TNBC/QNBC. Clinically, this will reveal a new, hitherto unknown targeted regimen for AA QNBC. From the biological perspective, it will provide insights into the underlying molecular changes that are associated with health disparities.Currently available treatments are unable to eradicate metastatic breast cancer specifically those classified as QNBC. Our preliminary analysis of Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) indicated that ADRM1 expression is highly expressed in AA versus EA breast cancer patients, resulting in a worse overall survival. Further analysis of ADRM1 in QNBC patients indicated that it was significantly elevated predominantly in African American patients with QNBC. Citation Format: Christopher B. Abstract (sommario):
Background: Many of the individuals who are released from incarceration are re-arrested and re-incarcerated within three years of release. Challenges that predispose individuals to re-arrest and re-incarceration include lack of education, employment opportunities, decent affordable housing, and treatment for substance use disorders (SUD) and/or mental illness. This report summarizes the behavioral health needs of newly arrested individuals in Montgomery County, Ohio. Methods: For this project, 4,809 adult individuals arrested for non-violent crimes received behavioral health screening and case management at booking in the Montgomery County Jail. Criminogenic assessment using the Risk-Needs-Responsivity (RNR) tool was conducted with 484 arrestees. Descriptive statistics and chi square statistics were calculated for gender, race, referrals made, education level, employment status, housing status, alcohol and other drug use, and mental health status. Results: As a group, the arrestees were undereducated, underemployed, and homeless. Based on RNR assessment, 67% had an SUD,and 60% required mental health treatment. Significant gender and racial differences were found among the arrestees, with womensignificantly more likely to have SUD and mental health issues. Conclusions: Individuals arrested and booked into the Montgomery County Jail experience a complex interaction among mental health, poly-substance use, medical, employment, and housing needs that must be addressed in a comprehensive and coordinated funding manner. This interactive complexity of issues demand a response from an integrated service delivery system that would best benefit the person served and the community.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract: This article analyses a set of photographs of the maritime coasts of the European Union (EU), released by photographers located in places where immigrants arrive on precarious ships, fleeing poverty and the wars that afflict them. The study tries to answer the question "What is the place of the subject in the world?” through the analysis of the selected images that reproduce a humanitarian drama. The results indicate the following discursive arguments: the rhetoric of exclusion draws, metaphorically, two separate worlds, immigrants versus European residents, and highlights the (non)place of the immigrant in the discourse of EU migration policies; a reproduction of the collective imaginary that feeds racism and xenophobia, where the invisibility of the immigrant is a social construct; the positive changes for humanity, which can be represented in the hands of solidarity of those who save lives in the Mediterranean, revealing a symbolic image: There is only one world, and with it, the right to a dignified life for all.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Background: Racial disparities among patients with breast cancer in the United States are well documented, with Black patients having a 40% higher mortality than White patients. Socioeconomic status, tumor biology differences, and treatment access are known contributing factors. Additionally, despite having a higher incidence of TNBC, Black patients are substantially less likely to receive gBRCA1/2mut testing than White patients. TNBC is an aggressive subtype, accounting for 15% of all breast cancers diagnosed in the United States. TNBC disproportionately affects BRCA mutation carriers and Black women. With the advent of poly ADP-ribose polymerases inhibitors (PARPi), gBRCA1/2mut are considered actionable biomarkers. Limited data are available on the impact of race on clinical outcomes among patients with gBRCA1/2-mutated advanced TNBC in the United States. Methods: US oncologists retrospectively reviewed patient charts (July 2019-June 2020) of a quasirandom selection of patients aged ≥18 years with gBRCA1/2-mutated advanced TNBC who received ≥1 cytotoxic chemotherapy (CT) regimen for advanced TNBC between Jan 2013-April 2018. Patients were categorized into 2 mutually exclusive cohorts of White and Black (based on self-identification). Descriptive analysis was performed for treatment patterns for the first 2 lines of therapy (LOT). Clinical outcomes (progression-free survival [PFS] by LOT and survival rates) were estimated with the Kaplan-Meier method. A log-rank test was used to assess differences in PFS and survival rates between White and Black patients. Results: Among 182 patients with gBRCA1/2-mutated advanced TNBC, 99.5% were women and 76.4% were White. The median age was 57.2 years (range, 48.7-64.7 years), and 30.2% had no known family history of BRCA-related cancer. Treatments for White patients with advanced TNBC included first-line (n=139) nonplatinum-based CT (61.9%) and platinum-based CT (38.1%) and second-line (n=90) PARPi (40.0%), nonplatinum-based CT (43.3%), platinum-based CT (11.1%), and other (5.6%). Treatments for Black patients with advanced TNBC included first-line (n=43) nonplatinum-based CT (60.5%) and platinum-based CT (39.5%) and second-line (n=19) PARPi (47.4%), nonplatinum-based CT (31.6%), platinum-based CT (10.5%), and other (10.5%). Across treatment types, no significant difference in 2-year survival rates was observed between White and Black patients (73.8% vs 73.2%, P=0.89). Median PFS rates by LOT were not statistically different across White and Black patients (Table 1). Conclusion: In this real-world study, no significant differences in clinical outcomes were observed between White and Black patients with gBRCA1/2-mutated advanced TNBC. This observation may be because this sample reflects a select patient population with a known genetic test result of a gBRCA1/2mut who were treated by oncologists that understood the value of genetic testing, and provided appropriate treatment options. The findings suggest that when all patients are provided with equitable care (inclusive of genetic testing), racial disparities in breast cancer may be minimized. Further trials are needed to validate these findings. Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Active surveillance (AS) is a safe management strategy for men with low-risk prostate cancer; however, nearly 35% of men on AS will undergo definitive treatment within 4 years, most commonly due to disease progression. Determining a non-invasive means of limiting disease progression would allow men to avoid quality of life issues associated with radical prostate treatment. Some modifiable factors, such as obesity and lipid levels, are associated with prostate cancer risk, though no behavioral intervention has been shown to affect prostate cancer outcomes. Using a prospective study of men on active surveillance, our group recently demonstrated that higher quality diets were associated with a significantly lower risk of disease progression. The Mediterranean diet (MD) specifically may be beneficial for men with localized prostate cancer (PCa) on active surveillance (AS) because of its anti-inflammatory, antilipidemic, and chemopreventive properties. Furthermore, recent evidence supports that dietary interventions can induce modulation of the gut microbiome, and consequently, immune function and inflammatory pathways, which warrants further investigation of the microbiome’s role in the context of prostate cancer. Here, we describe a novel dietary intervention among a group of men with localized prostate cancer who are electing to undergo prostatectomy for prostate cancer treatment. The intervention is a feeding study involving the provision of an isocaloric, high quality diet based on the lipid-lowering and anti-inflammatory parameters of the Mediterranean diet, including a strong focus on fiber-rich plant foods and healthy sources of mono and poly-unsaturated fatty acids. The primary outcome in this pilot study is the feasibility of a neoadjuvant dietary intervention. Secondary outcomes include studying the effects of the diet on metabolic parameters, the fecal microbiome, and changes in circulating metabolites shown to be associated with progression on active surveillance. Furthermore, by focusing on African-American and non-Hispanic White males, this study may provide insights into the key differences in inflammatory, immune and microbiome signatures, which may underly the prominent cancer-racial disparity seen in African-American men. Therefore, this study will gain preliminary data needed to inform further dietary interventions that may impact risk of progression in select men with prostate cancer enrolled on active surveillance. Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Background: Recommendation by a healthcare provider is essential for women to seek preventative cancer screening. Research has shown patients are receptive to information about cancer screening given by health professionals administering influenza vaccines. Promotion of cancer screening during vaccination may be particularly important in Puerto Rico (PR), which, relative to the continental United States, has low cervical and colorectal cancer screening rates. Objective: This study aims to determine if receiving the influenza vaccine in the past year or ever receiving the COVID-19 booster is associated with an increased likelihood of women participating in cervical, breast, and colorectal cancer screening in the past year. Methods: Women older than 18 are recruited weekly in different ongoing community outreach events throughout Puerto Rico as part of the Puerto Rico Community Engagement Alliance (PR-CEAL) against COVID-19 disparities. The PR-CEAL outreach team completes an online community survey as part of their field activities. Initial data was collected from February 17th 2022 through May 28th 2022, with data collection currently ongoing. Pearson χ2 test or Fisher exact test, as appropriate, was used to quantify the association between participation in cancer screening and vaccination status. Results: As of May 31st, 253 women with a median age of 59 had been recruited. Of these, 56.1% had received the influenza vaccine in the past year, and 52.6% had received a COVID-19 booster. Nearly 52% of women with the booster and 65% without the booster received cervical cancer screening (p-value = 0.29). Women with the booster and those without the booster (75% each) received breast cancer screening (p-value = 0.99). Only 16.1% of women with the booster and 11.8% without the booster had received colorectal cancer screening (p-value = 0.99). Receipt of cancer screening according to influenza vaccine status was as follows: 59.3% vaccinated and 51.5% unvaccinated received cervical cancer screening (p-value = 0.35); 31.4% vaccinated and 41.2% unvaccinated received breast cancer screening (p-value = 0.56); and 13.1% vaccinated and 9.3% unvaccinated received colorectal cancer screening (p-value = 0.46).Conclusions: No differences in receipt of cancer screening were found by influenza or COVID-19 booster vaccination status among adult women in Puerto Rico. Routine vaccination appointments may therefore represent a missed opportunity to promote cancer screening. Citation Format: Katherine A. Hill, Cynthia M.
