Abstract (sommario):
Horses and their owners participate in an increasingly diverse range of equestrian pursuits including such activities as racing, show-jumping, endurance riding, carriage driving, dressage, hunting, pony club games, polo and leisure trekking. The majority of owners and riders within the disciplines of equitation appear to have a general preference toward using male horses as the chosen competition animal. Although not exclusively so, stallions and geldings are quite often physically bigger and stronger than fillies and mares and may enjoy some athletic advantage as a result. However, it is known from studies involving humans and small laboratory animals (mice and rats) that some gender differences in cognitive function may also affect performance where tasks involve 3-dimensional objects and elements of depth perception (Morris, Garrud, Rawlins, and O’ Keefe, 1982). The horse has laterally placed eyes (Budiansky, 1997 and Figure 1) and therefore a stereoscopic (binocular) visual field of approximately 65-70°.

Abstract (sommario):
This essay draws together the disciplines of race theory, artificial intelligence, and phenomenology to engage the issue of racism as a learned phenomenon. More specifically, it centres on a comparison between robots and humans with respect to becoming racist. The purpose of this comparison is to illustrate the complex interconnections between racism, ontology, and learning. The essay begins with a discussion of race and racism that identifies both fundamentally as social realities. With this account, the essay draws on Hubert Dreyfus’ critical phenomenological work on artificial intelligence to outline several limitations for robots becoming racist. Next, the essay turns to the phenomenology of Merleau-Ponty as an ontological alternative for describing human beings and how racism is learned through habit and skill acquisition. In the end, it is suggested that this investigation not only provides an insightful glimpse into racism as a learned phenomenon, but also invites further discussion on how such racism may be confronted when it is viewed not simply as a cognitive issue, but rather as an issue of embodiment.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose This paper aims to focus on the design, analysis and additive manufacturing (AM) with two different technologies of an accelerator pedal for the Formula Student 2014 edition to reduce the weight of the original pedal in aluminium and maintain a reasonable level of performance. Design/methodology/approach The new and the original accelerator pedals were modelled in a computer-aided design application, and three finite element simulations were performed for each manufacturing technology to evaluate three different driving scenarios. Later on, two physical prototypes were manufactured using two AM technologies: poly-jet and fused deposition modelling (FDM). With these physical prototypes, static tests were carried out to verify the computational simulations and to determine the fracture load, while dynamic tests, based on an input signal from a real racing scenario, were performed to ensure their technical viability. Findings Simulations with poly-jet and FDM printing material show that the new design presents a maximum deformation of 4.8 and 4.09 mm, respectively, under a nominal load of 150N. The results of the static tests with the poly-jet physical prototype showed a maximum displacement of 4.05 mm under a nominal load of 150N, while the ultimate load before fracture was 450N. The FDM prototype reached 3.98 mm under 150N and the ultimate load was 350N. Dynamic tests showed that both pedals were able to withstand four Formula Student “Endurance” events without failure. Originality/value This paper states that AM approach is a feasible and economically affordable solution in comparison to exiting solutions with metallic alloys and composite materials when designing and manufacturing accelerator pedal arms for Formula Student competition cars. According to these results, the present research argues that, from a technical point of view, the AM pedals stand at a reasonable level of performance in displacements and stresses. This study suggests that AM pedals could be a viable option that must be considered in professional competitive automobiles.

Abstract (sommario):
This article assesses how the discriminatory practice of racial profiling exists and can undermine a human rights-based system of immigration control in Northern Ireland. Post-Brexit there is a possibility that this practice may increase in Northern Ireland, given that it shares a border with another European Union (EU) State. This article will centrally argue that immigration checks which take place on an ad-hoc basis in a State should be prohibited because the risks of discriminatory practices are too high. However, if they are to take place, it will be contended that attempts to stop and question individuals for immigration checking should be subject to greater control and accountability. For example, by restricting the remit under which checks can take place, and by increasing the powers of the Police Ombudsman of Northern Ireland (poni) to receive complaints concerning immigration agents. This article will explore whether enhanced surveillance of Border Force could take place by requiring agents to wear body-worn cameras in order to prevent racial profiling.

Abstract (sommario):
What resources does Merleau-Ponty’s account of the body schema offer to the Fanonian one? First I show that Merleau-Ponty’s theory of the body schema is already a theory of affect: one that does not oppose affects to intentionality, positioning them not only as sense but as force, cultivating affective agencies rather than constituting static sense content. Then I argue that by foregrounding the role of affect in both thinkers, we can understand the way in which the historical-racial schema innovates, anticipating and influencing feminist theories of the affective turn – especially Sara Ahmed’s theory of affective economies. The historical-racial schema posits the constitution of affective agencies on a sociogenic scale, and these affective economies in turn account for the possibility of the collapse of the body schema into a racial epidermal schema, a disjunction of affective intentionality Fanon calls “affective tetanization.”

Abstract (sommario):
Objectives: In this study, we examine the prevalence and demographic, social, and behavioral characteristics associated with college students' exposure to and engagement with tobaccorelated social media, in a diverse sample from the Marketing and Promotions Across Colleges in Texas Study (N = 4384). Methods: We used multiple logistic regression to examine cross-sectional associations between characteristics and exposure and engagement. Results: Overall, 30% of students reported past 30-day exposure to tobacco advertising on social media. Exposure was greatest for e-cigarette advertisements on Facebook. A total of 23% reported engagement. Anti-engagement activities, like posting links to anti-tobacco messaging, were more prevalent than pro-engagement. Racial/ethnic minorities, 2-year college students, dual/poly-users, higher social media users, students with friends who use tobacco, and students with higher depressive symptoms were significantly more likely to report exposure. Racial/ethnic minorities, sexual/gender minorities, 2-year college students, dual/poly-users, higher social media users, and students with higher depressive symptoms were more likely to report pro-engagement. Sexual/gender minorities, non-users and dual/poly-users (vs single-product users), higher social media users, students with friends who use tobacco, and students with higher depressive symptoms were more likely to report anti-engagement. Females were more likely to report hookah advertising exposure and anti-tobacco engagement. Conclusions: We discuss the regulatory and practical implications.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is the first substantive analysis of unregistered proprietary horse racing (or pony racing, as it was popularly known) in Sydney, an extremely popular form of the sport conducted weekly or more frequently between 1888 and 1942. However, a number of researchers working on its periphery have contributed commentary and judgements to a discourse on it that has existed since the establishment of the Sydney Turf Club (STC) in 1943. Their writings have created an orthodox view of the sport that suggests inter alia it was a cultural expression of a ‘needy and greedy’ element of the working class and that its constituency was excluded from that of the racing of the Establishment, conducted by the Australian Jockey Club (AJC). This orthodoxy also holds unregistered racing was subject to endemic corruption, haphazardly conducted, inexpensive to attend, provided poor money and was in general a burlesque of AJC racing. The thesis engages this discourse and tests the tenets of the orthodoxy through examination or re-examination of relevant primary sources, including parliamentary papers, contemporary newspapers and journals, race books and other documents, administrative records, photographs, and the memoirs and transcripts of oral history provided by human participants.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Historically, the Ford Mustang is America’s favorite “Pony Car”. A Pony Car by definition means an economical sports car. However, this economical sports car is required to compete against automobiles like the Corvette and Viper in many racing circuits. In order to better compete; Mustangs must be modified, often heavily, from their showroom stock condition. Modifications to the Mustang’s braking system are limited to what is available in the Mustang aftermarket. As such, the aftermarket has yet to address two common weaknesses in the Mustang’s braking system. They are: a lack of a front disk cooling device, and rear brakes that utilize disks larger than 11.65 inches in diameter. This paper discusses the design, fabrication, and testing of prototype parts to eliminate these two weaknesses in the Mustang’s braking system.

Abstract (sommario):
Robotics Model Design Competition sponsored by the Two Year College Division (TYCD) of American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) provides an avenue for freshman and sophomore student teams in two year as well as four year colleges and universities to participate in a creative engineering design project. Historically Black Colleges and University - Undergraduate Program (HBCU-UP) at National Science Foundation (NSF) have provided support for development of ACTION (Advanced Curriculum and Technology-based Instructional Opportunities Network) at UMES. The ACTION program promotes inquiry based active learning and research projects among undergraduate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) majors. Engineering, Technology, and Mathematics students responded enthusiastically when the authors proposed the idea of participating in the (ASEE) 2006 Robotic Model Design Competition at one of the American Society for Mechanical Engineers (ASME) student section meetings at UMES in the fall of 2005. (The authors serve as the advisors for ASME student section chapter at UMES). The student leader of the section quickly put together a team of five freshman and sophomore engineering, engineering technology and mathematics students to develop a proposal to UMES ACTION program. The authors supported the proposal development efforts. The proposal got funded and provided the resources for project execution and travel. A team of eleven freshmen and sophomore students from Engineering, Engineering Technology and Mathematics departments of University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) participated in the American Society for Engineering Education’s (ASEE) 2006 Robotics Model Design Competition project. The event was sponsored by the Two-year College Division (TYCD) of ASEE and was open to freshman and sophomore student teams from two year as well as four year colleges and universities. The competition required teams to design and build an autonomous robot capable of delivering ping pong balls to each of four corner pockets located on an 8ft×8ft plywood track in a sequence. Each team was evaluated on the basis of a written report, an oral presentation, and scores obtained from the best two runs out of four runs on the racing track. Sixteen student teams across the nation participated in the event. UMES entered two teams in the competition who called themselves “Hawks 1” and “Hawks 4”. The student team “Hawks 1” won the competition. Video clips of both design projects as they executed the specified task at the 2006 ASEE Robotics Model Design Competition can be viewed at: http://www.umes.edu/asme/robots.htm. This paper describes the design projects “Hawks 1” and “Hawks 4” and its relevance to ABET learning outcomes.
