Abstract (sommario):
In this paper, a prototyped plenoptic camera based on a key electrically tunable liquid-crystal (LC) device for all-in-focus polarimetric imaging is proposed. By using computer numerical control machining and 3D printing, the proposed imaging architecture can be integrated into a hand-held prototyped plenoptic camera so as to greatly improve the applicability for outdoor imaging measurements. Compared with previous square-period liquid-crystal microlens arrays (LCMLA), the utilized hexagonal-period LCMLA has remarkably increased the light utilization rate by ~15%. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed imaging approach can simultaneously realize both the plenoptic and polarimetric imaging without any macroscopic moving parts. With the depth-based rendering method, both the all-in-focus images and the all-in-focus degree of linear polarization (DoLP) images can be obtained efficiently. Due to the large depth-of-field advantage of plenoptic cameras, the proposed camera enables polarimetric imaging in a larger depth range than conventional 2D polarimetric cameras. Currently, the raw light field images with three polarization states including I0 and I60 and I120 can be captured by the proposed imaging architecture, with a switching time of several tens of milliseconds. Some local patterns which are selected as interested target features can be effectively suppressed or obviously enhanced by switching the polarization state mentioned. According to experiments, the visibility in scattering medium can also be apparently improved. It can be expected that the proposed polarimetric imaging approach will exhibit an excellent development potential.

Abstract (sommario):
One of the most effective ways of minimizing oil spill impact is early detection. Effective early detection requires automated detection that relies as little as possible on an operator and can operate 24/7. A new and innovative optical detection system exploits the polarization of light, the same physics used to reduce glare through the use of polarized glasses but in the thermal infrared (TIR) portion of the optical spectrum. Measuring the polarization of thermally emitted radiation from an oil spill enhances the detection over conventional thermal cameras and has the potential to provide automated day / night monitoring and surveillance. The sensors developed thus far are relatively small and inexpensive and can be easily mounted in areas that need monitoring and installed in unmanned aerial systems (UAS). Since the sensor is adapted from a conventional TIR camera, thermal imagery as currently used is collected in addition to the polarimetric imagery to further improve the detection performance. Lens options enable wide area coverage at shorter ranges and higher resolution at longer ranges from the camera position. A TIR Polarimetric camera was tested at Ohmsett to establish performance under a variety of conditions. The Polarimetric camera was tested during the day and at night, under several different wave conditions generated in the wave tank, and with oil of different compositions and thicknesses. The imagery collected was analyzed to establish the contrast improvement through the polarimetric properties of the oil and to assess the automation of the detection process. In this poster, the sensor and test setup will be briefly described with detailed description of the results and the potential of this detection approach for automated detection.

Abstract (sommario):
In this paper, a new on-orbit polarization calibration method for the multichannel polarimetric camera is presented. A polarization calibration model for the polarimetric camera is proposed by taking analysis of the polarization radiation transmission process. In order to get the polarization parameters in the calibration model, an on-orbit measurement scheme is reported, which uses a solar diffuser and a built-in rotatable linear analyzer. The advantages of this scheme are sharing the same calibration assembly with the radiometric calibration and acquiring sufficient polarization accuracy. The influence of the diffuser for the measurement is analyzed. By using a verification experiment, the proposed method can achieve on-orbit polarization calibration. The experimental results show that the relative deviation for the measured degree of linear polarization is 0.8% at 670 nm, which provides a foundation for the accurate application of polarimetric imaging detection.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. The Spaceborne Directional Polarimetric Camera (SDPC) is dedicated to obtain an accurate information of clouds and microphysical properties of aerosol particles via multi-angle, multi-spectral and multi-polarization observations. It images the Earth with 110° field of view (FOV) in 3 polarimetric spectral bands and 5 non-polarimetric spectral bands from visible to near infrared. Due to its wide FOV telecentric optical system and multi-channels, polarization sensitivity of optical components (PSOC) and non-uniform response of pixels (NURP) are the main uncertainty factors of polarimetric calibration. In this paper, a polarimetric calibration model of SDPC has been constructed for increasing the measurement accuracy. Combined an integrating sphere with a polarization generator as source, PSOC can be measured in high accuracy by using the Fourier series analysis method which reduces the impact form the alignment error of the generator. The sectional viewing field measurement method is used to acquire NURP while the large aperture integrating sphere served as reference source. Subsequently, the data of NURP have been corrected by the relative transmittance of high frequency and low frequency respectively for polarized channels. The result of validation experiment shows that the polarization measurement errors in 0°, 15°, 30°, and 45° half field of view (HFOV) are all less than 0.5% when the degree of linear polarization of reference source is larger than 0.1.

Abstract (sommario):
Unmanned ground vehicles are increasingly employing a combination of active sensors such as LIDAR with passive sensors like cameras to perform at all levels of perception, which includes detection, recognition and classification. Typical cameras measure the intensity of light at a variety of different wavelengths to classify objects in different areas of an image. A polarimetric camera not only measures intensity of light, but can also determine its state of polarization. The polarization of light is the angle the electric field of the wave of light takes as it travels. A polarimetric camera can identify the state of polarization of the light, which can be used to segment highly polarizing areas in a natural environment, such the surface of water. The polarimetric camera designed and built for this thesis was created with low cost in mind, as commercial polarimetric cameras are very expensive. It uses multiple beam splitters to split incoming light into four machine vision cameras. In front of each machine vision camera is a linear polarizing filter that is set to a specific orientation. Using the data from each camera, the Stokes vector can be calculated on a pixel by pixel basis to determine what areas of the image are more polarized. Test images of various scenes that included running water, standing water, mud, and vehicles showed promise in using polarization data to highlight and identify areas of interest. This data could be used by a UGV to make more informed decisions in an autonomous navigation mode.

Abstract (sommario):
Among the different sensing modalities, vision sensors are the ones thatprovide the most abundant environmental information. Additionally, the usage ofa short focal length lens allows to easily increase the observed area. The releaseof color and polarimetric imagers makes it possible to extend even more thepolarimetric application related to depth estimation. Indeed, the polarizationparameters of the reflected light are related to the nature and to the geometryof the objects, which can be used advantageously. In this thesis, our mainobjective is to study the usage of polarization data to enhance theperception capabilities applied to robotics tasks, particularly in the task ofscene depth reconstruction. Furthermore, we aim to push the knowledge in thefield of polarization imaging by providing other researchers with a set of toolsthat will allow them to quickly access the polarization modality. After doing acomplete introduction to the polarization theory and modeling, we describe howto calibrate a DoFP sensor. This sensing device allows to capture twomodalities (color and polarization) with a single snapshot. The new calibrationtechnique that we propose enables this device to provide more accuratemeasurements by fitting a mathematical model to each individual pixel. Themethod we present here aims to reduce the amount of equipment and, thus theexperimental time required to obtain calibrated measurements. We make a detailedexplanation of the physics underlying the Shape-from-Polarization technique, which enablesthe normal field estimation of an object by using polarization cues. All therequired equations as well as their inverted versions for deriving the vectorparameters from the polarization state are detailed while taking intoconsideration the type of reflection and material. We also put in evidence theeffects of our calibration algorithm over the estimation of the normal vectorfield by using polarization. The estimation of depth information usingartificial intelligence has seen significant growth in recent years. In thiscontext, we also propose a deep-learning network to estimate depth based on amiddle-fusion architecture, and a polarimetric loss function. The objective ofthis development is to show how to effectively integrate the polarization theoryconstraints into a data-driven algorithm. A qualitative and quantitativeevaluation of the results shows the interest of using an RGB-polarimetric imagerthanks to the contribution of the polarization information. During this researchwork, a complete software toolbox was also developed, providing the scientificcommunity with simplified access to polarimetric imaging

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is performed in the context of the study of the formation and evolution of planetary systems using high contrast imaging, also known as direct imaging in contrast to so-called "indirect" detection methods. The work I present in this manuscript is divided into two distinct parts. The first part concerns the observational component of my thesis, using the SPHERE instrument installed at Very LargeTelescope. This work was done as part of the consortium of the same name. The purpose of the SPHERE instrument is to detect and characterize young and massive exoplanets, but also circumstellar disks ranging from very young protoplanetary disks to older debris disks. In this manuscript, I present my contribution to the program SHINE, a large survey with an integration time of 200 nights' worth of observation, the goal of which is the detection of new exoplanets and the spectral and orbital characterization of some previously-known companions. I also present the two studies of circumstellar disks that I made, around the stars HD 141569 and HIP 86598. The first study allowed the discovery of concentric rings at about ten AU of the star along with an unusual flux asymmetry in the disk. The second study is about the discovery of a debris disk that also has an unusual flux asymmetry. The second part concerns the instrumental component of my thesis work done within the MICADO consortium, in charge of the design of the camera of the same name which will be one of the first light instruments of the European Extremely Large Telescope (ELT). In this manuscript, I present the study in which I define the design of some components of the coronagraphic mode of MICADO while taking into account the constraints of the instrument - which is not dedicated to high contrast imaging, unlike SPHERE

Abstract (sommario):
Most diseases that affect the optic pathways present clinically with loss of one or more visual functions. When optic pathway injuries involve the anterior visual pathways they may cause loss of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and "band atrophy" (BA). The purpose of this study was therefore to compare the ability of the optical coherence tomography (OCT) 1, the OCT 3 (Stratus OCT) and the scanning laser polarimetry (GDx) to differentiate normal eyes from eyes with BA of the optic nerve and temporal hemianopsia. Thirty-seven individuals in a total of 46 eyes divided equally in two groups were studied. Each one of the parameters, except the values from the nasal quadrant measured by the GDx, showed statistically significant difference when we compare normal patients with the BA group. The study also showed a gradual improvement of the sensibilities/specificities and of the AROC, with a better performance of the OCT1 compared to GDx and of the Stratus OCT compared to the OCT 1
