Abstract (sommario):
The term known as “Plagiarism” was first coined in English around the year 1601 by the dramatist Ben Jonson, in order to characterize someone committing theft in literary. The term plagiarize is taken from the Latin word plagiary to kidnap. So a plagiarist is the one committing plagiarism. Plagiarism is a serious form of scientific misconduct that results from “the failure to attribute words, ideas, or findings to their true authors” Specifically, the World Association of Medical Editors (WAME) defines plagiarism as “the use of others’ published and unpublished ideas or words without attribution or permission, and presenting them as new and original rather than derived from an existing source” The AIM of the present review is to provide a thorough account of plagiarism to builds awareness about all dimensions of plagiarism and the measures that a Scientific Researcher can adopt to avoid plagiarism

Abstract (sommario):
Objectives: The rapidly rising incidence of plagiarism among students at universities throughout the world requires attention. This study aimed to determine the extent to which medical and nursing students in Erbil, Iraq, plagiarise, their knowledge, understanding and perceptions of plagiarism and the underlying factors that may lead them to plagiarise. Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out between January and June 2017 among a sample of 400 undergraduate medical and nursing students at Hawler Medical University in Erbil. Plagiarism-related data were collected through a specially designed self-administered questionnaire. Results: In total, 280 (70%) medical students and 120 (30%) nursing students were included in the study. The reported prevalence of plagiarism was 54.3%, with a slightly higher prevalence among male students compared to female students (54.9% versus 53.8%; P = 0.820) and medical students compared to nursing students (58.9% versus 43.3%; (P = 0.004). Alarmingly, 34.8% of the students did not know what plagiarism was, and only 28% were aware of the legal consequences of plagiarism. Reported reasons for plagiarising included laziness and the ease with which others’ work could be plagiarised, confusion, cultural reasons and pressure to meet deadlines. Conclusion: There was a lack of understanding of plagiarism and its legal ramifications among undergraduate medical and nursing students in Erbil. The findings of this study indicate that there is an urgent need to increase students’ understanding of plagiarism and its consequences so as to reduce the incidence of this type of academic misconduct. Keywords: Undergraduate Medical Education; Plagiarism; Medical Students; Nursing Students; Perceptions; Iraq.

Abstract (sommario):
Kata kunci: Plagiarisme, karya ilmiah, perguruan tinggiAbstractPlagiarisme is indeed wrong since it’s a claim of somebody’s scientific work as its own. In the academic world, plagiarism is also considered a moral misconduct which brought a negative impact to academic integrity. Therefore, plagiarism needs to be prevented and when happened, strict sanction and punishment need to be sentenced. In 2010, Ministry of Education has issued a decree to prevent and stop plagiarism among the academics. This article attempts to describe types of plagiarism, why it happens, and how to prevent and solution. Many references used came from foreign articles, since few were known about plagiarism in Indonesia. Types of plagiarism such as word by word plagiarism, word switch plagiarism, style plagiarism, metaphor plagiarism, idea plagiarism, self plagiarism, and plagiarism through internet were described. As an educational institution, the Faculty of Public Health University of Indonesia is urged to put serious attention to prevent and eliminate plagiarism using a system approach by creating conducive educational environment, respecting other’s scientific work, conducting training on paraphrase, citation, and reference writing in a proper way; creating and using simple electronic software to check sci- entific article plagiarism and encourage students to seek advice to prevent this disrespectful deed.Key words: Plagiarism, scientific writing, university

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract: Plagiarism cases have increasingly occurred, especially in higher education, and Universitas Negeri Malang is one of universities in Indonesia that concerns about plagiarism cases. However, there are only a few studies concerning plagiarism that have been conducted in Universitas Negeri Malang. As EFL learners, ELT students are more likely to be exposed to plagiarism issues and might have committed plagiarism either intentionally or unintentionally. In order to prevent unexpected attitudes that may lead to plagiarism cases, this study used surveys to investigate the ELT students’ attitudes towards plagiarism in writing argumentative essays in terms of their behavioral, normative, and control beliefs. The subjects of the study were ELT students who were taking an Argumentative Writing course. The findings show that the majority of the ELT students have unfavorable attitudes towards plagiarism in writing argumentative essays. Even though some students show favorable attitudes and tend to approve plagiarism issues in certain situations, this study has confirmed that the students have generally understood about plagiarism, and they tend to perform unintentional plagiarism rather than intentional plagiarism. The favorable attitudes found in this study are mostly caused by the unclear information and policies concerning plagiarism, and the students’ competence in writing. Keywords: ELT students, attitudes, plagiarism, argumentative essays Abstrak: Kasus plagiarisme telah semakin marak, terutama di dunia pendidikan tinggi. Abstract (sommario):
Plagiarism is an offense and an ornament to science. Plagiarists steal the work of other authors or what is commonly called cheating or plagiarizing without citing the origins of the original author. Plagiarism is an act that is vulnerable to criminal activity and this problem must be considered in as much detail as possible. The act of plagiarism is recognized as an act that is disapproved and contrary to the scientific spirit in the academic world in universities. Several types of plagiarism can be distinguished by intentional or unintentional plagiarism motivation, ways of committing plagiarism include handwriting, inappropriate paraphrasing, and summaries, plagiarism itself can be said to be recycling text, redundant or duplicate publications, data fragmentation . The purpose of this study is to find out the legal arrangements for plagiarism of scientific work in tertiary institutions and to find out the legal consequences for perpetrators of the crime of plagiarism of scientific work in tertiary institutions. The research method used by the author is normative research method which positions the law as a building system of norms. There is no law that specifically regulates plagiarism, but someone who commits plagiarism or is called a plagiarist is regulated in Article 1, Minister of National Education Regulation number 17 of 2010 concerning the prevention and control of plagiarism in tertiary institutions. There are several reasons for someone to commit plagiarism, such as the convenience obtaining information via the internet, pressure on academic assignments, poor writing skills, rushing to write under pressure, lack of knowledge and understanding of how to rewrite original references, misunderstandings to self-understand plagiarism, and habitual cheating or plagiarism, such as avoiding theft intellectual, do good writing i.e. quote and paraphrase, and try the same thing or detect plagiarism in many ways like using plagiarism apps or turnitin. Abstract (sommario):
It is much easier to access literature now than before because of the existence of the internet where students can download soft files of articles or written works from journals or particular websites. However, postgraduate students especially those studying at a teacher education program should not plagiarize because they become role models for their students and should present noble behaviour for their students to be. This study investigated how much undergraduate and postgraduate students in English education are familiar with plagiarisms, how their attitudes toward plagiarism are and what may encourage them to plagiarize. The data for this study came from 151 students involved in this study by filling in the questionnaire and 6 of them were randomly selected for interview. The results show that in general there is no important difference between undergraduate and postgraduate students on their knowledge, attitude, and experiences of dishonesty and plagiarism although there are some differences in the percentage of the two groups of students on several items asked in the questionnaire. This implies that the level of education does not affect university students of their knowledge, attitude and experience on dishonesty and plagiarism. Therefore, it is recommended that specific training programs on academic writing which include moral ethic, knowledge on dishonesty and plagiarism and their practical samples in written texts to combat dishonesty and plagiarism among university students at any level.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Plagiarism is one of the most serious forms of academic misconduct. It is defined as “the use of another person's written work without acknowledging the source”. As a countermeasure to this problem, there are several methods that attempt to automatically detect plagiarism between documents. In this context, this work proposes a new method for Cross-Language Plagiarism Analysis. The method aims at detecting external plagiarism cases, i.e., it tries to detect the plagiarized passages in the suspicious documents (the documents to be investigated) and their corresponding text fragments in the source documents (the original documents). To accomplish this task, we propose a plagiarism detection method composed by five main phases: language normalization, retrieval of candidate documents, classifier training, plagiarism analysis, and postprocessing. Since the method is designed to detect cross-language plagiarism, we used a language guesser to identify the language of the documents and an automatic translation tool to translate all the documents in the collection into a common language (so they can be analyzed in a uniform way). After language normalization, we applied a classification algorithm in order to build a model that is able to differentiate a plagiarized text passage from a non-plagiarized one. Once the classifier is trained, the suspicious documents can be analyzed. An information retrieval system is used to retrieve, based on passages extracted from each suspicious document, the passages from the original documents that are more likely to be the source of plagiarism. Only after the candidate passages are retrieved, the plagiarism analysis is performed. Finally, a postprocessing technique is applied in the reported results in order to join the contiguous plagiarized passages. We evaluated our method using three freely available test collections. Two of them were created for the PAN competitions (PAN’09 and PAN’10), which are international competitions on plagiarism detection. Since only a small percentage of these two collections contained cross-language plagiarism cases, we also created an artificial test collection especially designed to contain this kind of offense. We named the test collection ECLaPA (Europarl Cross-Language Plagiarism Analysis). The results achieved while analyzing these collections showed that the proposed method is a viable approach to the task of cross-language plagiarism analysis.

Abstract (sommario):
Includes bibliographical references.
The aim of this study is a conceptual and theoretical exploration of literary plagiarism. Chapter One traces various definitions of plagiarism and contrasts plagiarism with copyright infringement. It is argued that plagiarism is a social construct which cannot be defined solely in terms of textual features and must be contextualised. Authorial intention and reader reception play a key role in the discourse of plagiarism, since both reveal the prevailing contemporary textual ethics underlying textual production. The literature review in Chapter Two analyses the ways in which plagiarism has been interpreted in the last fifty years contrasting essentialist definitions of plagiarism with postmodern theories of plagiarism as a discourse of power. Plagiarism is contextualised within modern and postmodern aesthetics. In Chapter Three, the discourse of authorship as a stable and unified category is destabilised and challenged. What counts as plagiarism is argued to be inseparable from changing valorisations of authorship. Paradigms of authorship are then contrasted to illustrate how textual values change from one era to another, affecting dominant representations of authorship and plagiarism. Originality is explored as the pivotal construct on which the Romantic model of individual authorship depends - the model in which our current views of plagiarism have their origin. The plagiarist or 'nonauthor' is commonly viewed as everything the author is not: a copyist, unoriginal and immoral. Chapter Four analyses this construction of the plagiarist in the context of a South African case study in which Stephen Watson, Head of Department of English at the University of Cape Town, accused writer Antjie Krog of plagiarism. An analysis is made of the debate which ensued in a South African online journal, as well as of the press documentation surrounding the case. An interview was also conducted with Watson once the debate subsided. The conclusion reached from this study affirms that plagiarism is not an easily definable phenomenon since it depends on cultural notions that are in flux. Social, economic and technological changes also bring to bear on the literary institution, models of authorship and the consequent treatment of plagiarism. By enlarging the range of motivations for textual practices traditionally labelled as plagiarism, this thesis argues for a new conception of plagiarism, one that engages various discourse participants and contexts.

With this comes the potential risk of a rise in academic misconduct and intellectual property theft. As concerns over plagiarism grow, more attention has been directed towards automatic plagiarism detection. This is a computational approach which assists humans in judging whether pieces of texts are plagiarised. However, most existing plagiarism detection approaches are limited to super cial, brute-force stringmatching techniques. If the text has undergone substantial semantic and syntactic changes, string-matching approaches do not perform well. In order to identify such changes, linguistic techniques which are able to perform a deeper analysis of the text are needed. To date, very limited research has been conducted on the topic of utilising linguistic techniques in plagiarism detection. This thesis provides novel perspectives on plagiarism detection and plagiarism direction identi cation tasks. The hypothesis is that original texts and rewritten texts exhibit signi cant but measurable di erences, and that these di erences can be captured through statistical and linguistic indicators. To investigate this hypothesis, four main research objectives are de ned. First, a novel framework for plagiarism detection is proposed. It involves the use of Natural Language Processing techniques, rather than only relying on the vii traditional string-matching approaches. The objective is to investigate and evaluate the in uence of text pre-processing, and statistical, shallow and deep linguistic techniques using a corpus-based approach. This is achieved by evaluating the techniques in two main experimental settings. Second, the role of machine learning in this novel framework is investigated. The objective is to determine whether the application of machine learning in the plagiarism detection task is helpful. This is achieved by comparing a thresholdsetting approach against a supervised machine learning classi er. Third, the prospect of applying the proposed framework in a large-scale scenario is explored. The objective is to investigate the scalability of the proposed framework and algorithms. This is achieved by experimenting with a large-scale corpus in three stages. The rst two stages are based on longer text lengths and the nal stage is based on segments of texts. Finally, the plagiarism direction identi cation problem is explored as supervised machine learning classi cation and ranking tasks. Statistical and linguistic features are investigated individually or in various combinations. The objective is to introduce a new perspective on the traditional brute-force pair-wise comparison of texts. Instead of comparing original texts against rewritten texts, features are drawn based on traits of texts to build a pattern for original and rewritten texts. Thus, the classi cation or ranking task is to t a piece of text into a pattern. The framework is tested by empirical experiments, and the results from initial experiments show that deep linguistic analysis contributes to solving the problems we address in this thesis. Further experiments show that combining shallow and viii deep techniques helps improve the classi cation of plagiarised texts by reducing the number of false negatives. In addition, the experiment on plagiarism direction detection shows that rewritten texts can be identi ed by statistical and linguistic traits. The conclusions of this study o er ideas for further research directions and potential applications to tackle the challenges that lie ahead in detecting text reuse.

Abstract (sommario):
Classifying images and deciding algorithmically whether or not they are the same image is a complex problem in com-puter science. This report looks at using perceptual hashing in order to fingerprint images so that they may be matched to one and other. The results shows that threshold match-ing images can be done with good accuracy, while a zero distance match is not reliable in most scenarios. The con-clusion is that a hybrid approach that uses a more inclu-sive perception algorithm to filter out candidates for a more thorough algorithm might be a good choice.

Abstract (sommario):
Plagiarism detection is one of the most researched areas among the Natural Language Processing(NLP) community. A good plagiarism detection covers all the NLP methods including semantics, named entities, paraphrases etc. and produces detailed plagiarism reports. Detection of Cross Lingual Plagiarism requires deep knowledge of various advanced methods and algorithms to perform effective text similarity checking. Nowadays the plagiarists are also advancing themselves from hiding the identity from being catch in such offense. The plagiarists are bypassed from being detected with techniques like paraphrasing, synonym replacement, mismatching citations, translating one language to another. Image Content Plagiarism Detection (ICPD) has gained importance, utilizing advanced image content processing to identify instances of plagiarism to ensure the integrity of image content. The issue of plagiarism extends beyond textual content, as images such as figures, graphs, and tables also have the potential to be plagiarized. However, image content plagiarism detection remains an unaddressed challenge. Therefore, there is a critical need to develop methods and systems for detecting plagiarism in image content. In this paper, the system has been implemented to detect plagiarism form contents of Images such as Figures, Graphs, Tables etc. Along with statistical algorithms such as Jaccard and Cosine, introducing semantic algorithms such as LSA, BERT, WordNet outperformed in detecting efficient and accurate plagiarism.

Abstract (sommario):
Aim/Purpose: In this paper the authors explore and analyse the literature to determine the common reasons why a student may choose to plagiarise. The predominant purpose of the research formed part of a larger study to develop metrics and methods to identify potential plagiarism within coding-based assignments. Methodology: A systematic literature review with the objective to identify and rank the most common reasons for plagiarism was conducted. This was achieved by identi-fying primary studies conducted on the reasons for plagiarism. The identified studies were subsequently subjected to a top down quality assessment with a number of criteria. In total, 37 studies made it through the selection process. The results of the selected studies were synthesized to obtain a ranked list of reasons why students plagiarise. Contribution: This paper contributes a ranked list of reasons that may influence a student’s decision to plagiarise, based on a set of categories emerging from the literature. Findings: Eleven possible categories indicating the common reasons behind a student’s decision to plagiarise are identified. The literature revealed that aspects such as the external values of the student and attitudes towards academia and teaching styles are significant factors that impact a student’s willingness and decision to plagiarise. Impact on Society: Instructors may gain a better understanding on why their students decided to plagiarise.

Pawelczak, Dieter. "Effects of Plagiarism in Introductory Programming Courses on the Learning Outcomes". In Fifth International Conference on Higher Education Advances. Valencia: Universitat Politècnica València, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/head19.2019.9297.

Abstract (sommario):
We compare two introductory programming courses and the accompanying programming assignments with respect to the learning outcomes and the relation to plagiarism. While in the first course the solutions from the students of their programming assignments are checked directly with a plagiarism detection system to prevent students from plagiarizing, plagiarism is not tracked in the second course. Running a post check against plagiarism after the course reveals a significant higher plagiarism rate with several exact copies. As the number of students handing in copies from fellow students increases, the failure rate in the final examination also rises. Analyzing the data does not only reveal a correlation between plagiarizing and inferior examination results, but also shows, that students confronted with a plagiarism detection system have better skills in fundamental coding concepts. We suppose this might be a result of the fact, that the implementation of a plagiarism detection system does not deter so many students from plagiarizing, but students are strongly motivated to run more modifications on their plagiarisms in order not to be caught.

Abstract (sommario):
Teaching English for specific purposes (ESP) is a complex field, in which students are encouraged not only to develop their proficiency skills in the four main areas of language development – i.e. reading, listening, writing and speaking – but also to acquire and develop a series of competences that would enhance their creativity, flexibility, information processing and problem-solving ability. This multifold approach could justify why one of the major issues in teaching ESP is represented by efforts to eliminate plagiarism from the students’ written work. As the Internet has become more and more part of students’ research and of their academic, as well as personal life, plagiarism has increased significantly. Although researchers are still debating whether the Internet is one of the causes of the expansion of plagiarism in the academic world or it is simply a tool that makes plagiarism easier to track than in the past, one cannot fail to observe that there is a strong connection between technological advancement and wide-spread access to the Internet and plagiarism. This article aims to provide a twofold analysis of this connection. On the one hand, it will present ways in which the Internet can actually contribute to students’ tendency to plagiarise. On the other, it will show how it can help ESP teachers identify cases of plagiarism, as well as provide support to both students interested in improving their work and avoiding plagiarism and to teachers through anti-plagiarism software. Among other examples of software aimed to track plagiarism, references will be made to the anti-plagiarism programme used at the Bucharest University of Economic Studies to check bachelor’s graduation papers and master’s dissertations before they are accepted and proposed for the defence exam.

Abstract (sommario):
Plagiarism is a growing issue in higher education institutions world-wide. If left unchallenged, it represents a threat to genuine academic scholarship and integrity. This paper examines the current state of knowledge based on published research with a specific focus on plagiarism in engineering education. The overall aim of the study is to identify major factors that contribute to plagiaristic behaviour and to develop evidence-based tools, resources and interventions to assist students, faculty and higher education institutions to avoid plagiarism. Furthermore, the study seeks to provide policy recommendations that can be implemented at institutional level. It is found that plagiarism occurs at all levels of academic practice in teaching and research. The reasons why students plagiarise include ease of access to materials on the internet, time constraints, pressures to achieve good grades, lack of academic support and failure to integrate students into the university community. Faculty and universities have a role to play in training students to be ethical users of information. Students should be trained to be able to identify their requirements, to source and paraphrase text, cite references properly and attribute all sources of information. Faculty should also develop authentic instruments of assessments. This will motivate students to develop creative solutions. Plagiarism is however a complex aspect of human behaviour and further research is required to understand it better and to find potential solutions.
