Testo completoThe aim of this study was to understand the articulation between double culture and identity on immigrant children’s vocational project. Literature concerning these three concepts is rich and there is a great amount of researches on immigrant children. Identity is considered here in a dynamic perspective, and studied in accordance with identity strategies. The vocational project reflects the interests of a person, but refers at the same time to other elements, such as identity, context and culture. The content analysis of nine semi-structured interviews with immigrant children led to an identification and the understanding of the complexity of career choices when considering their double cultural and identity development. Results show, among others, that identity changes and is influenced by participants’ various contexts. Also, career choices are made according to family expectations, parents’ project of immigration and participants’ career aspirations. Keywords: Immigrant children's identity construction, career choices, cultural affiliation.

Testo completoThe end of conscription announced in 1996 gave way to an entirely professionalized army implying the consideration of new sociopolitical and functional imperatives. In response to these issues, the armies have launched recruitment strategies intended to capture new population segments in order to widen the pool (feminisation, immigrant populations). In this context of structural mutation, the intersection of data collected from interviews taken from a sample of 30 military personnel hailing from immigrant backgrounds and a selection of high-ranked Defence officers allows us to make out the contours of this phenomenon. The analysis of terms of enlistment reveals a typology with three entries listed in the form of those who enlist en rupture, those as stratèges, and those as initiés. Besides deconstructing the vision of homogeneity in profile of these population segments, the analysis of social trajectories reveals that, if their logics for engagement present similarities structurally comparable with the entirety of those who enlist, they equally demonstrate substantial variations and a certain number of specificities in direct connection with their background as descendants of immigrants. The return of intra-military experiences subsequently rounds out our initial typologisation. The adoption of a longitudinal perspective supports a reflection that doubly questions the validity of discourse related to integrative virtues and citizens assigned to armies, a legacy anchored in the mythology of conscription, and the impact of the military experience on that discourse, the representations, and the practices of actors

Testo completoThis doctoral work focuses on the effects of social categorization processes in multicultural political marketing. This research specifically examines the targeting of French dual citizens of North African descent and how it affects the identity dynamics of these dual citizens and their perceptions of citizenship. Four categorical dynamics are distinguished: identity withdrawal, probationary, adaptive, and anchoring. Individuals will adopt one of these four dynamics depending on the contexts and political discourses they encounter. Several forms of citizenship relationships have been identified, all demonstrating an ongoing need for citizenship among individuals. Political marketing practices play a significant role in shaping categories within this framework, thus subject to various criticisms. This research contributes to social identity theories, political marketing, and marketing studies on ethnicity

In recent years, Québec City has welcomed an increasing number of immigrants as well as a significant number of non-permanent residents, including more and more international students. This has given way to an even more diverse urban fabric. Half of the newcomers are women who, while experiencing most of the challenges shared by all immigrants, often face greater barriers due to a dual woman/immigrant status. On the other hand, immigrant women also have a capacity to act upon their lives and implement strategies to cope with their difficulties, including getting socially involved in the host society. This exploratory research focuses on one of these strategies – volunteering – through interviews with immigrant women who have volunteered in the early years of their lives in Quebec. The main objective of the research is to understand the role of volunteering with regard to the integration process. Some observations came out of our results. For the majority of participants, volunteering came in line with previous commitments while circumstances specific to post-migration could lead to changes in the types of volunteering they chose, the way they committed themselves and the motivations behind their choices. Interviewees have got involved according to their principles and values as well as their personal interests, but their immigrant status also carried additional motivations including the wish to create social

Testo completoThis thesis is based on ethnographic research conducted primarily within the Montreal’s Deaf community and tries to identify Deaf identity representations through artistic performances of the Montreal scene. The purpose of the research is to include Deaf culture in the social and scientific reflections about the expression of their cultural identity by minorities, through the arts. In an attempt to demonstrate the links, both theoretical and practical, between the Deaf identity and recognized social and socio-political minorities such as Blacks, gays, women or Queers, this study is grounded in the concepts of performativity (Judith Butler), performance (Clifford Geertz and Victor Turner) and representations (Moscovici and Stuart Hall). It also demonstrates the relationships between these concepts, the subjects’ personal experiences, their agency and their artistic expression.

Testo completoThis study, conducted from a socioconstructivist framework, used qualitative methodology to explore the construction of minority teachers’ professional identity. Data collection consisted of in-depth semi-structured interviews with 20 primary school teachers aged from 30 to 35 years old (10 descendants of immigrants – 10 of French origin). The verbatim was analyzed using content analysis methodology. Comparisons between the 2 groups have shown differences and similarities in their: familial education, values, relationship to religion, career choice, professional representations. The analysis of minority teachers’ interviews has revealed the primordial contributions of interpersonal relationships in the construction of their professional Self (with significant others from family and school contexts, in particular). As descendants of immigrants they have faced specific challenges (face racism and discrimination, build an ethnic identity, etc.), the diversity of their psychosocial integration paths occurs in the construction of contrasted professional identities. Some of them are motivated by a desire of social justice, the goal of creating a bridge between mainstream culture and minority cultures becoming a career mission. Others, don’t do anything in particular for disadvantaged pupils or for those belonging to ethnic minorities

Testo completoThrough a detailed cross-cultural approach of the English Canadian and American minority theatrical production, my thesis aims to identify the thematic and aesthetic contributions of multi-ethnic North American drama to the Anglo-American tradition of the 20th century. My study examines North American drama from the vantage points of African, Asian, and Native communities from 1972 until today. Relying on a number of case studies, my research opened up new avenues for rethinking the notions of hybridity and identity in relation to the postcolonial community/nation.
