Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis explores everyday practices of Peruvian women at the soup kitchen, a self-help organization that feeds poor families. Every day, women put their culinary knowledge into practice and provide people with good tasting food in spite of limited material resources. In addition, these women share experiences and advice, affirm their authority towards male beneficiaries, and resist to the governmental control exercised through a national food aid program. I will argue that through these everyday practices and social interactions, women express forms of resistance. Concurrently, they are able to contest gender, socio-economic and political domination, and construct an identity of proud, active women. This complex and intimate look at the experiences of women at the soup kitchen will be based on ethnographic fieldwork carried out in Villa Maria del Triunfo, a district on the outskirts of Lima composed largely of migrants who came in town in hopes to construct a better life.

Abstract (sommario):
This study examined the professoriate view of spirituality at a private university in Lima, Peru. A two-phase, sequential mixed method was used. Two hundred forty professors completed Paloutzian and Ellison’s (1982) Spiritual Well-Being Scale (SWBS) for the quantitative phase. Five research questions exploring the professors’ gender, general area of teaching (humanities vs. sciences), highest university degree earned, age, and total years of university teaching experience were analyzed to determine if any significant differences existed within those variables. Two non-parametric tests were used: the Mann-Whitney U test and the Kruskal-Wallis Test. It was discovered only gender showed a significant difference. Five surveyed professors participated in the focus group phase exploring significant gender difference on the spiritual well-being scores. Five questions explored this difference between males and females. Four themes emerged: gender role enculturation, biological motherhood, stress, and internal strength.

Chong, Lugon Daniela. "Dispossessing the public : privatization of open public spaces in Lima, Peru". Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2020. https://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/129022.

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis: M.C.P., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Urban Studies and Planning, September, 2020

Includes bibliographical references (pages 75-78).
The Metropolitan Area of Lima has on average 3.6m² of green area per person, for a total of 10 million inhabitants. Although this is not the most accurate metric, it is the most available proxy to measure and understand the magnitude of open public space in the city. In addition, it is not equitably distributed: districts with higher socioeconomic levels and larger municipal budgets have greater area and higher quality public spaces. In a context of inequitable distribution on quantity and quality, one of the biggest threats that public spaces face is their privatization, a process in which a space is dispossessed from the public and transformed for a private or restricted use.
From sidewalks, streets, parks, and plazas, to natural spaces such as beaches and the coastal lomas natural ecosystems, in recent years, these unprotected areas have become shopping centers, supermarkets, parking lots, private clubs, formal and informal housing, amusement parks, synthetic grass courts, and other infrastructure that has altered at some degree its openness, ownership, accessibility, and function. This shift from public to private spaces ultimately reduces the opportunity of all citizens to have available open public spaces, increases social fragmentation, and ultimately deepens issues of social injustice and spatial inequalities. In such a scenario, this thesis examines the conditions under which open public spaces are privatized and identifies the mechanisms.
Through different case studies and interviews, I create three types that attempt to explain the different forms in which privatization develops to expose the motivations behind it, the processes of how it happens, the actors who are involved, and the manifestations it has in the built environment. The first type is Concession for Development, and takes place when public space is rented to private entities in the form of concessions with the excuse of bringing development and improvement. The second is Appropriation for Livelihood, and occurs when public space is informally appropriated to fulfill a basic need such as housing or a productive activity. The third is Enclosure for Control, and results when public space is enclosed and its access is restricted in order to provide safety or facilitate its management. I analyze and expose the structural governance conditions and flaws in current planning processes -- formal and informal, top-down and bottom-up --
that lead to privatization in order to help create awareness about how and why this invisible phenomenon takes place and who is most affected by it. Finally, this thesis proposes recommendations that can help Lima and other Peruvian cities promote the protection and preservation of public spaces and also encourage a more equitable distribution.

Byrne, Anthony Luke. "Chronic Respiratory Disease among Successfully Treated Tuberculosis Patients of Lima, Peru". Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/18687.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
As a respiratory physician, I have a keen interest in understanding the contribution that tuberculosis makes to chronic respiratory disease in tuberculosis endemic countries. This provided the impetus for my research. First, I performed a systematic review of the literature asking; “Among subjects from the general population, what is the association between a history of pulmonary tuberculosis and the presence of (1) structural lung disease (chronic obstructive lung disease or bronchiectasis) and (2) reactive lung disease (asthma)?” I performed a systematic review of the literature and found the odds of chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD) to be three-fold higher (odds ratio 3.05, 95% confidence interval 2.42 to 3.85) and that of asthma two-fold higher (OR 2.05, 95% CI 1.45 to 2.90) in tuberculosis patients compared to community controls. The latter had not previously been recognised. However, I noted that most of these studies were cross-sectional and subject to potential bias and confounding. Furthermore, none of these studies assessed the impact of multi-drug resistant (MDR) tuberculosis. Given these limitations I designed a cohort study in Lima, Peru, to more accurately assess the relationship between tuberculosis and chronic respiratory disease. The study also assessed atopy (as this may modify the risk of asthma) and non-respiratory comorbidity among tuberculosis patients. Two neighbourhoods in Lima were chosen as the study setting given their high incidence of tuberculosis, including MDR disease, the existence of good community links and well-functioning treatment programs. The Pulmones Post TB (“lungs after tuberculosis” in English) cohort study, in contrast to previous studies, demonstrated that patients successfully treated for drug susceptible tuberculosis did not have reduced lung volumes (forced vital capacity, FVC or forced expiratory volume in one second, FEV1) compared to community controls, although post-bronchodilator airflow obstruction (defined as FEV1/FVC ratio < 0.70) was more common (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 2.47, 95% CI 1.01 to 6.03). The effects of MDR-tuberculosis were more profound. Patients treated for MDR-tuberculosis had lower FEV1 (431 mL, 95% CI: -679ml to -183ml) and lower FVC (370 mL, 95% CI: -644 to -97 mL) than community controls, despite microbiological cure. MDR-tuberculosis patients were nearly five times more likely to have post-bronchodilator airflow obstruction (aOR 4.89, 95% CI 1.27 to 18.78). This observed difference in lung function outcomes between drug-susceptible and MDR-tuberculosis may be explained by delays in initiating effective treatment for patients with MDR-tuberculosis, as well as the reduced efficacy of second line anti-tuberculous drugs. Few participants (<5%) demonstrated a bronchodilator response or raised exhaled nitric oxide levels (a biomarker of eosinophilic airway inflammation associated with asthma) and there were no significant differences between tuberculosis or non-tuberculosis groups for these outcomes. We also compared the prevalence of atopy and atopic disease (asthma and allergic rhinitis) between people with previous tuberculosis and community controls. Previous tuberculosis suggested a reduced risk of atopy compared to controls (42.9% versus 57.0%), with an adjusted Odds Ratio (aOR) of 0.64 (95% CI 0.41-1.01). However, neither allergic rhinitis (aOR 0.76, 95% CI 0.47 to 1.24), nor asthma (aOR 1.18, 95% CI 0.69 to 2.00) was less common among those with previous tuberculosis. We also found no significant difference in the combined index of atopic disease (aOR 0.86, 95% CI 0.54 to 1.36). A secondary study objective was to assess the feasibility and yield of screening for common non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including hypertension, diabetes mellitus and chronic kidney disease, using a simple set of questions and inexpensive point of care testing. Glycosuria was found in 3.3% of former tuberculosis patients without known diabetes, with a number needed to screen (NNS) of 31. The prevalence of hypertension was high among people in both the “tuberculosis and “no tuberculosis” groups (4.7% and 14.5%). Among tuberculosis patients the NNS to find one (new) case of hypertension was 24, while 19.1% of patients with self-reported diabetes had proteinuria with a NNS of 5. Patient centred care that includes pragmatic NCD screening seems feasible in tuberculosis patients and the prolonged period of treatment provides an opportunity to link patients to ongoing care. In conclusion, the Pulmones Post TB cohort study demonstrated that pulmonary tuberculosis can result in chronic respiratory disease, including COPD, even in the absence of traditional risk factors such as cigarette smoking and biomass fuel exposure. In our study, this was observed mainly among patients with MDR-tuberculosis, suggesting that early effective treatment limits these detrimental effects. Screening tuberculosis patients for common non-respiratory NCDs provides an opportunity for linkage to appropriate patient-centred care.

Green, Jody. "Clothing Colonial Lima: Dress in Plaza Mayor de Lima de los Reinos de el Peru, año de 1680". VCU Scholars Compass, 2014. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/601.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The painting Plaza Mayor de Lima de los Reinos de el Peru, año de 1680, which is held in the collection of the Museo de América in Madrid, presents an idealized image of social interaction in the Plaza Mayor with its depiction of people from a variety of social groups. Little is known surrounding the painting’s commission, and recent scholarship focuses primarily on the colonial architecture within the image. This thesis seeks to shift the scholarly dialogue by examining the depictions of the female figures within the painting. As this thesis will argue, both the portrayal of the female figures in different modes of dress and the location of the figures within the painting document the ways in which distinctions in race and economic class were understood in seventeenth-century Lima. By analyzing the dress and the positioning of the figures, the interactions of Europeans, West Africans, indigenous and mixed raced persons are revealed.

Peru of the 21st century is characterized by an atmosphere of progress and upward social mobility among its different social classes. An economy growing at a rate of approximately 8% annually is reflected in all of Peru but especially in the capital city of Lima. Greater Lima, with more than nine million inhabitants, represents approximately 30% of the Peruvian population and a multicultural mix of people from the country’s different provinces. Due to the existing centralism, Lima is the place where the Peruvian upper class live and the upwardly mobile migrate.

Abstract (sommario):
Domestic service refers to the work required to complete duties pertaining to the maintenance and functioning of the household, particularly when performed by employed labor. This study provides an ethnographic account of domestic service through an analysis of social behavior and cultural patterns. The participants in the social structure of domestic service are the señora (the lady of the house), her family, and the empleadas (domestic workers) all of whom have specific social identities and roles within the household. The señora/empleada dyad is central to the institution and all other participants are secondary. This study contributes to the growing body of work in anthropology that concentrates on elite sectors of society and explores theoretical issues relating to gender, class, and ethnic differences in Peru.

Abstract (sommario):

Includes bibliographical references (p. 109-113).
As urban transportation deteriorates, chaos increases putting aside urban patterns, systems and networks to prioritize the implementation of modern technologies. As a consequence of this situation and as a means to fulfill the requirements of the growing city, the larger built forms in the city are put in the spotlight and made busier and more complex. The connectivity that once ordered the transportation networks throughout the urban form diminishes, almost vanishes. There are different scales of movements, at different paces and levels (in all three dimensions), which need to be understood in order to get a good reading of the activity of the city. The site is located in the district of San Martin de Porres in the city of Lima, Peru and this thesis aims to fill the existing void represented by it in its context. It also aims to reconnect and re-vitalize the area of study by using transit-oriented development and spatially identifying elements. Another goals is to meet the needs of transportation networks and people through spatial relations, so as to generate a prototype that establishes processes and results to promote urban growth. This thesis presents the possibility to synthesize such movements (now scattered and unintelligible) and to provide a space for the junction and strengthening of the existing links between people and transit that occupy the urban landscape. The implementation of a Multimodal Passenger Terminal to serve both local (urban) mass transit and regional transportation is the main compositional element of the project. This will be complemented by other programmatic elements such as: a civic plaza and a communal green space, a series of smaller, more intimate open spaces, community services, retail and office space, movie theaters and a hotel. They will as a whole serve as supporting activities for the area and as a point of destination for the neighbors. The analysis of the transit network - regional and local - as well as of the area's land use and green space systems will allow for the better understanding of the context and will set the stage for the remainder of the study. Pedestrian behavioral patterns in the area also provide necessary information that is used to determine accesses and paths or concentration points in the project. The resulting elements are distilled and categorized into several design guidelines and are placed in a timeline for phased development. A series of organizational and distribution diagrams have been produced to reflect the findings. All of these could serve as a starting point for future development in other locations with similar conditions in the city or the country. They could be used individually or jointly depending on the demands and needs of the project, the people, the existing systems and the site, at a given time.

Abstract (sommario):
Growing concern about the ongoing environmental crisis has prompted an increased awareness of pollution and climate change. These grave environmental problems are often framed as pressing global issues, but they take unique forms in different locations. This thesis endeavours to contextualize these global issues and explore how they are apprehended at a local level. Through a focus on embodied experiential knowledge and social, political, and historical context, I have examined the specificity and local character of what it means to live with pollution and climate change in Lima, Peru. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in Lima’s Cono Sur, including participant observation and interviews, I argue that environmental understandings and practices must be seen as embodied, historical, and situated in time and space.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
BACKGROUND: Suicide is a leading cause of maternal death globally, and suicide prevalence rates have been shown to be increased in those with migraine. No previous study has examined the association between migraine and suicidal ideation during pregnancy. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between migraine and suicidal ideation among a cohort of pregnant women. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 3372 pregnant women attending prenatal care clinics in Lima, Peru. Suicidal ideation and depression were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) scale during early pregnancy. Migraine classification (including migraine and probable migraine) was based on International Classification of Headache Disorders-III beta criteria. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to estimate odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI). RESULTS: Suicidal ideation was more common among those with migraine (25.6%) as compared to those with probable migraine (22.1%, P < .001) or non-migraineurs (12.3%, P < .001). After adjusting for confounders, including depression, those with migraine or probable migraine had a 78% increased odds of suicidal ideation (OR = 1.78; 95% CI: 1.46-2.17), as compared with non-migraineurs. Women with both migraine and depression had a 4.14-fold increased odds of suicidal ideation (OR = 4.14; 95% CI: 3.17-5.42) compared to those with neither condition. CONCLUSION: Migraine is associated with increased odds of suicidal ideation in pregnant women even when controlling for depression. These findings support the consideration of screening women with comorbid migraine and depression for suicidal behavior during pregnancy.

Abstract (sommario):
The following article explores the work experiences and individual perceptions of a group of professionals from Lima (Peru) regarding interlingual subtitling. Such study was conducted using qualitative methods. A total of twelve semi-structured interviews were made, including four groups of participants: companies and professionals of the translation field, as well as companies and professionals of the audiovisual communication field. Although participants believe that subtitling does not have an established market in the Peruvian capital, they do think that it is a niche with a growing demand. Likewise, there is also a distinction between the way translation and audiovisual companies and professionals work, particularly with regard to the subtitling process and the use of guidelines, as well as other criteria used to ensure the quality of the service.

Abstract (sommario):
ASTMH 64th Annual Meeting. October 25-29, 2015 Philadelphia Marriott Downtown Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA
Acute respiratory infections (ARI) are the main cause of morbidity and mortality in children under 5 years worldwide. Bordetella pertussis is a highly contagious bacterium that can cause serious illness, and approximately half of infected infants less than 1 year old are hospitalized. Also, pertussis immunization series is not completed until six months of age, leaving young infants vulnerable to pertussis. In Peru, pertussis is an increasing health problem despite immunization efforts, and the role of B. pertussis in ARI is unknown. We determined the prevalence of B. pertussis among children under 5 years old admitted to Hospital Nacional Cayetano Heredia in Lima with diagnosis of ARI between Jan-2009 and Dec 2010. Epidemiological and clinical features were collected, and presence of B. pertussis was determined by PCR (pertussis toxin and IS481 gene). A total of 596 nasopharyngeal samples among children under 5 years were analyzed. In 114 (19.1%) samples were positive for B. pertussis. 32.5% of sample positive to B. pertussis were diagnosed as viral pneumonia at diagnosis. Importantly, 71.9% of cases were under 12 months of age and 58.8% have been contact with other ARI infected people. Significant differences in clinical symptoms between the total ARI cases and B. pertussis cases were not found. The most frequent symptoms in B. pertussis cases were fever (100%), rhinorrhea 78%, cough 71.9% and respiratory distress 60.5%. One child died due to the infection. B. pertussis cases showed a seasonal distribution with peaks during the months March June and November. This study shows the high prevalence of B. pertussis in infants who were hospitalized due to severe acute respiratory infections in Lima, Peru. Epidemiologic surveillance programs for B. pertussis are essential in the future in Peru

Abstract (sommario):
Many studies have shown that using music and songs while learning a new language can be of great benefit to students in aspects such as grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary. However, the use of songs in class as motivation to learn English is a subject that has not been explored thoroughly. The purpose of this study is to explore how the use of songs in English helps motivating students while learning English as a Second Language (ESL). The participants were primary school students at a private school located in the Lima Metropolitan Area. This study used a mixed-method design that included observations carried out by the research team and questionnaires completed by students. The results show that students are motivated to participate and become more engaged in classroom activities when songs are used in their English classes. This result was more strongly confirmed with the observations than with the questionnaires.

Abstract (sommario):
This study analyzes the relationship between political ideology, voting behavior and emotional responses after Peruvian presidential elections in 2011. Scales of intolerance for ambiguity, need for closure, right-wing authoritarianism (RWA) and the right-wing political orientation were used to assess right-wing political conservatism. A structural equation model proposes that intolerance of ambiguity and need for closure exert a direct effect on RWA. Also, RWA influences directly the right-wing political orientation, which exerts a direct influence on negative emotional responses and an inverse effect on positive emotional responses after O. Humala’s victory. Final discussion focuses on the contemporary relevance of left/right ideological continuum.

Abstract (sommario):
Limited data exists on intimate partner violence (IPV) among transgender women (TW), though global trends suggest IPV is associated with HIV risk in this population. We describe the prevalence of verbal, physical, and/or sexual violence as well as participant- and partner-level correlates of IPV among TW in Lima, Peru. Among 389 respondents, 15.2% reported IPV with one or more of their last three sexual partners: 9.2% verbal, 8.2% physical, and 2.3% sexual violence. Physical and verbal violence were more common with stable partners (aPR 3.46, 95% CI 1.17–10.25, aPR 2.46, 95% CI 1.14–5.28, respectively). Physical violence was associated with condomless receptive anal intercourse (cRAI) (aPR 2.22, 95% CI 1.19–4.13) and partner alcohol use (aPR 4.38, 95% CI 1.56–12.33) while verbal violence correlated with participant inebriation (aPR 4.86, 95% CI 1.63–14.46). Our results link IPV with stable partnerships, alcohol use, and cRAI, suggesting TW in Peru may benefit from multidimensional IPV prevention strategies to foster supportive relationships and reduce HIV transmission.

The present research seeks to show the importance of applying process management techniques and food safety norms in the operational processes of the supply chain to know the meaning and the need for an integrated hybrid model. The article reviews the sugarcane distillery sector of Peru and its main operational problems. Based on the literature reviewed and discussed with academics who have knowledge of the food supply chain, an integrated hybrid model was developed to help any distillery with lower levels of competitiveness than its competitors in other sectors, such as pisco, applying techniques of process management and food safety to increase the efficiency of liquor distilleries. The findings confirm that distilleries can increase their efficiency, thanks to the higher performance of their operations after their alignment with the integrated model.

Article
Introduction: There is limited and controversial information regarding the potential impact of depression on glycemic control. This study aims to evaluate the association between depression and poor glycemic control. In addition, the prevalence of depression and rates of poor glycemic control were determined. Methods: Cross-sectional study performed in the endocrinology unit of two hospitals of ESSALUD in Peru. The outcome of interest was poor glycemic control, evaluated by glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c: < 7% versus ≥ 7%), whereas the exposure of interest was depression defined as 15 or more points in the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 tool. The association of interest was evaluated using Poisson regression models with robust standard errors reporting prevalence ratios (PR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) adjusting for potential confounders. Results: A total of 277 participants, 184 (66.4%) males, mean age 59.0 (SD: 4.8), and 7.1 (SD: 6.8) years of disease were analyzed. Only 31 participants (11.2%; 95% CI: 7.5%–14.9%) had moderately severe or severe depression, whereas 70 (25.3%; 95% CI 20.3%–30.8%) had good glycemic control. Depression increased the probability of having poor glycemic control (PR = 1.32; 95% CI 1.15–1.51) after adjusting for several potential confounders. Conclusions: There is an association between depression and poor glycemic control among type 2 diabetes patients. Our results suggest that early detection of depression might be important to facilitate appropriate glycemic control and avoid further metabolic complications.

Objectives: Diagnosis of tuberculous meningitis (TM) is a challenge in countries with a high burden of the disease and constrained resources and clinical prediction rules (CPRs) could be of assistance. We aimed at developing a CPR for diagnosis of TM in a Latin American setting with high tuberculosis incidence and a concentrated HIV epidemic. Methods: We enrolled adult patients with clinical suspicion of TM attending two hospitals in Lima, Peru. We obtained information on potential anamnestic, clinical and laboratory predictive findings that are easy to collect and promptly available. We independently diagnosed TM according to a composite reference standard that included a series of microbiological tests. We performed bivariate analysis and constructed a logistic regression model to select the predictive findings associated with TM. With the selected predictors included in the model, we developed a score-based CPR. We assessed its internal validity and diagnostic performance. Results: Of 155 analysed patients, 59 (38%) had TM. The CPR we derived includes three predictors: cough for 14 days or more, 10–500 cells in CSF and adenosine deaminase ≥ 6 U/l in CSF. It classifies patients into high-, moderate- or low-score groups and has an overall area under the ROC curve of 0.87. 59% of patients were assigned to either the high- or the low-score group, permitting prompt decision-making. In patients in the high-score group, it attains a positive likelihood ratio for TM of 10.6 and in patients with low scores, a negative likelihood ratio of 0.10. Bootstrap analysis indicated high internal validity. Conclusion: This CPR could support decision-making in patients with clinical suspicion of TM. External validation and further assessment of its clinical impact are necessary before application in other settings.

GINOCCHIO, LINARES FRANCESCO. "The governance of informal street vending: Regulation, extortion and marginality in Gamarra, Lima - Peru". Doctoral thesis, Gran Sasso Science Institute, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.12571/22882.

Abstract (sommario):
Informal street vending has historically been a recurring phenomenon in various cities around the world, which has attracted the attention of academic research in the social sciences. Initially addressed from theoretical debates on political economy (Chen, 2006), in recent decades considerable attention has been given to studies on urban planning and governance (Devlin, 2011; Le Galès & Vitale, 2014; Roy & Roy, 2016; Yiftachel, 2009). In particular, this thesis aims to widen the existing scholarly knowledge on the governance of informal street vending in cities, by developing an exploratory analysis of the legal and extra-legal governing practices used to control this economic activity, with special emphasis on the power relations that govern public spaces and their configuration. For this purpose, the case study of the informal street vending in the textile cluster of Gamarra, the city of Lima, Peru, is presented. Several bodies of literature contribute to the conceptual framework of the thesis: regulation as a governing practice; extractive capacity of the state; and theories on urban marginality. I use qualitative methods to analyse the primary data collected through 84 semi-structured interviews in Spanish with state and non-state actors, plus participant observation and documentary analysis. The thesis is composed of three academic papers investigating separate issues of the governance of informal street vending. In Paper 1, the research questions the role of regulation as a tool for governing informality. A fact that tends to be controversial due to the antithesis involved in regulating an economic activity that by definition operates outside the law. When delving into such relationship between regulation and informality, it was noted that both its development and its enforcement by local authorities were used on various occasions to maintain and strengthen the presence of informal street vendors in the area. The paper emphasizes then how regulation can also be used to create a system of deregulation through legal means. Paper 2 focuses on the analysis of the state's fiscal capacity to understand the governance of informal economic activities. This paper highlights the role of two governance mechanisms employed by the local government to expand its extractive capacity towards informal street vendors: governance arrangements and extra-legal practices. Findings suggest that both were customized to the needs of the social structure over which the coercive power of the state is exercised. Finally, Paper 3 seeks to address the management of informal street vending based on its configuration as a form of marginalization. Specifically, the analysis presented in this paper addresses the effects of the condition of marginality in the livelihoods of informal street vendors under particular circumstances like the one of the COVID-19 outbreak. Through the analysis carried out, it was possible to notice the shortcomings of both market self-regulation and social control mechanisms oriented to deal with urban marginality. The importance of doing so lies in exposing the policy implications of choosing between livelihood and health when governing those at the urban margins.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Corruption is one of the main problems in Peru, along with crime and citizen insecurity, violence against women, drug use, poverty and unemployment. The latter has increased in recent months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The objective of the study was to determine common behaviors associated with corruption among university students from Lima, Peru. Among the common behaviors identified, it was found that students, at least once, had bought pirated products (94.4%), offered false excuses to their parents to justify where they were (88.5%), and cheated on exams (74.4%). These behaviors were observed in both men and women. The results show that these behaviors are the result of a broader educational problem that has permeated the morals and ethics of society.

Mansilla, Judith M. "Firm Foundation: Rebuilding the Early Modern State in Lima, Peru after the Earthquake of 1687". FIU Digital Commons, 2016. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/2443.

Abstract (sommario):
One early October morning in 1687, the ground under the large Spanish colonial city of Lima, Peru rumbled. If longstanding historiographical portraits of Spanish government as inefficient and weak were true, the earthquake that was about to shatter Lima should have devastated it beyond repair. The study of the aftermath of this natural disaster reveals that behind the landscape of destruction, the pillars of the colonial state in Lima not only held up but also permitted its rapid recovery after the event. As part of a more recent historiographical trend that reappraises the Spanish decline during the seventeenth century, my dissertation reevaluates the performance of colonial administration in Lima, the capital of the Viceroyalty of Peru. It focuses on deliberate changes carried out during the 1680s, when the metropolis implemented a series of fiscal and administrative reforms, whose effects were interrupted but not destroyed by the challenge posed by the earthquake of 1687. The use of extensive contemporary archival sources, both official and private, provides a multifaceted vista on the performance of royal agents and colonial subjects responding to the earthquake. A close reading of these sources unveils the rebuilding of the state in various facets: government attempts to impose authority and bring order to the chaos; the patrimonial logic of rules that colonial administrators faced when trying to implement rebuilding projects; colonial subjects’ expectations of royal agents and each other; negotiations among authorities and ordinary people over the terms of rebuilding the city; and the importance of inhabitants’ understandings of justice, founded in law and custom, to carrying out city reconstruction.

Introduction: There are few studies that examine the factors associated with the different levels of health anxiety in medical students. The objective was to determine the factors associated with the levels of health anxiety in medical students in 2018. Methods: An analytical cross-sectional study was carried out with 657 medical students from a private Peruvian university. Participants answered a questionnaire from which information was collected regarding levels of health anxiety (SHAI). For the analysis, linear regression was used to calculate crude and adjusted betas, and their 95% confidence intervals. Results: The mean health anxiety score was 14 ± 6.7. An association between health anxiety and the year of study is reported, with the second year showing the highest scores. In addition, an association between health anxiety and smoking is highlighted, as there are higher levels in occasional smokers, as well as a weak inverse correlation with age. No association was found with sex, place of birth, or having a first-degree relative that is a doctor or health worker. Conclusions: The present study showed that age, year of studies and smoking are associated with health anxiety levels. More studies are required, especially of a longitudinal nature.

Saavedra, Garcia Lorena, Zevallos Vanessa Sosa e Canseco Francisco Diez. "Reducing salt in bread: a quasi-experimental feasibility study in a bakery in Lima, Peru". The Nutrition Society, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10757/555477.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Objectives: To explore salt content in bread and to evaluate the feasibility of reducing salt contained in ‘pan francés’ bread. Design: The study had two phases. Phase 1, an exploratory phase, involved the estimation of salt contained in bread as well as a triangle taste test to establish the amount of salt to be reduced in ‘pan francés’ bread without detection by consumers. In Phase 2, a quasi-experimental, pre–post intervention study assessed the effects of the introduction of low-salt bread on bakery sales. Setting: A municipal bakery in Miraflores, Lima, Peru. Subjects: Sixty-five clients of the bakery in Phase 1 of the study; sales to usual costumers in Phase 2. Results: On average, there was 1·25 g of salt per 100 g of bread. Sixty-five consumers were enrolled in the triangle taste test: fifty-four (83·1 %) females, mean age 58·9 (SD 13·7) years. Based on taste, bread samples prepared with salt reductions of 10 % (P = 0·82) and 20 % (P =0·37) were not discernible from regular bread. The introduction of bread with 20 % of salt reduction, which contained 1 g of salt per 100 g of bread, did not change sales of ‘pan francés’ (P=0·70) or other types of bread (P =0·36). Results were consistent when using different statistical techniques. Conclusions: The introduction of bread with a 20 % reduction in salt is feasible without affecting taste or bakery sales. Results suggest that these interventions are easily implementable, with the potential to contribute to larger sodium reduction strategies impacting the population’s cardiovascular health.

Chung, Delgado Kocfa, Montag Alejandro Revilla, Bravo Sonia Guillen, Segovia Eduardo Velez, Montoya Andrea Soria, Garbin Alexandra Nuñez, Caso Wilmer Silva e Antonio Bernabe-Ortiz. "Factors Associated with Anti-Tuberculosis Medication Adverse Effects: A Case-Control Study in Lima, Peru". Public Library of Science (PLoS), 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10757/313811.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Background: Long-term exposure to anti-tuberculosis medication increases risk of adverse drug reactions and toxicity. The objective of this investigation was to determine factors associated with anti-tuberculosis adverse drug reactions in Lima, Peru, with special emphasis on MDR-TB medication, HIV infection, diabetes, age and tobacco use. Methodology and Results: A case-control study was performed using information from Peruvian TB Programme. A case was defined as having reported an anti-TB adverse drug reaction during 2005–2010 with appropriate notification on clinical records. Controls were defined as not having reported a side effect, receiving anti-TB therapy during the same time that the case had appeared. Crude, and age- and sex-adjusted models were calculated using odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI). A multivariable model was created to look for independent factors associated with side effect from anti-TB therapy. A total of 720 patients (144 cases and 576 controls) were analyzed. In our multivariable model, age, especially those over 40 years (OR = 3.93; 95%CI: 1.65–9.35), overweight/obesity (OR = 2.13; 95%CI: 1.17–3.89), anemia (OR = 2.10; IC95%: 1.13–3.92), MDR-TB medication (OR = 11.1; 95%CI: 6.29–19.6), and smoking (OR = 2.00; 95%CI: 1.03–3.87) were independently associated with adverse drug reactions. Conclusions: Old age, anemia, MDR-TB medication, overweight/obesity status, and smoking history are independent risk factors associated with anti-tuberculosis adverse drug reactions. Patients with these risk factors should be monitored during the anti-TB therapy. A comprehensive clinical history and additional medical exams, including hematocrit and HIV-ELISA, might be useful to identify these patients.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of the thesis is to analyze the situation of school libraries in areas of different socio-economical characteristics within Metropolitan Lima, Peru. I will study how the ScL(s), are affected with regard to organization, resources and services. In this study, I have chosen ten school libraries from different socio-economical conditions. Three of these school libraries are elite private schools and the rest represent the public schools. The empirical study consisted of interviews with persons in charge of the school libraries in each school, interviews with the school principals, interviews with the public officials of the NLP (National Library of Peru) and questionnaires answered by the students. The thesis is also based on observations I have made. The empirical material has been theoretically analysed based on Loertscher’s taxonomies of the school library media program. Loertscher’s taxonomy is used to analyze the ScL’s standard. A major finding of this thesis is that the school libraries of the elite private schools have a high standard, taking an active role in their own operation; with library staffs which are autonomous and well trained, having the ability to make their own decisions. In contrast, the libraries from the public schools have an inferior standard when compared to the private schools. In the ScL(s) from the public schools the students do not have access to computers and the staffs do not have autonomy or access to training.
