Abstract (sommario):
Radiocarbon (Δ14C) measurements of monthly samples from a Galapagos surface coral are among the first data sets from the new Keck Carbon Cycle Accelerator Mass Spectrometry laboratory at the University of California, Irvine. An average Δ14C value of −62 is obtained for 144 measurements of samples from monthly coral bands that lived from about AD 1760–1771 (±6 yr). High Δ14C values were found during January through March, when upwelling was weak or absent at the Galapagos Islands. Low Δ14C values were obtained mid-year during strong upwelling. The average seasonal variability of Δ14C was 15–25, which is greater than that at other tropical and subtropical locations in the Pacific Ocean because of intense seasonal upwelling at this site. Periods of sustained high Δ14C values were found during 1762–1763 and 1766. A spectral analysis revealed that the spectral density for the Δ14C data displays most of its variance at the 5-yr cycle, which is reflective of El Niño periodicity during the 20th century.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. The thermal conditions of south-western Greenland in the second half of the 18th century were estimated using two unique series of meteorological observations. The first series (Neu-Herrnhut, 1 September 1767 to 22 July 1768, hereinafter 1767–1768) is the oldest long-term series of instrumental measurements of air temperature available for Greenland. The second (Godthaab, September 1784 to June 1792) contains the most significant and reliable data for Greenland for the study period. The quality-controlled and corrected data were used to calculate daily, monthly, seasonal and yearly means. The daily means were further used to calculate day-to-day temperature variability (DDTV), thermal seasons, growing degree days (GDDs), the air thawing index (ATI), positive degree days (PDDs) and air freezing index (AFI) degree days. Air temperature in Godthaab (now Nuuk) was, on average, warmer than the present day (1991–2020) in 1767–1768 and colder in 1784–1792. Compared to the early 20th-century Arctic warming (ETCAW) period, the data for the two sub-periods show that the late 18th century was as warm or even warmer. Except winter 1767/1768, winters and springs in the study period were longer, while summers and autumns were shorter than at present. The analysed climate indices usually did not exceed the maximum and minimum values from 1991–2020. Mean daily air temperature in the studied historical periods rarely exceed ±2 SD (standard deviation) of the long-term mean calculated for the contemporary period. Air temperature distribution was usually close to normal, in both historical and contemporary periods.

Abstract (sommario):
In this article we examine the figure of the military engineer, geometer, architect Pierre Rico de Tirregaille (Tirrgaille, French Pierre Ricaud de Tirregaille, Ricaud (Ricaut, Ryko) Pierre de Tirregaille (Tirgaille)). The years of his activity (about 1725 - after 1772) are relatively well known to researchers. But his biography remains unknown, except for the period of activity in the Commonwealth. Analysis of the results of previous research has shown that scientific research has been conducted in several areas. The first area includes research on biographical information about the architect. The second area includes studies on various projects that Pierre Rico de Tirregail commissioned. Manuscripts and graphics are important sources for finding out about Pierre Rico de Tirregail and his design work. They are stored in the archives of Warsaw, Krakow, the National Heritage Institute in Warsaw and the National Library of France in Paris. Pierre Ricaud de Tirregaille was born around 1725 in a French noble family in the district of Tiregale in Provence. His professional education was improved in Barcelona under the guidance of engineer Francis Ricode de Tierreagil. In the territory of the Polish– Lithuanian Commonwealth he worked from 1752 to 1762. We distinguish three periods in the activity of the architect: I - Warsaw (1752–1757), II - Lviv (1757–1760) and III - Warsaw (1760–1762). Most orders were received by the architect from several magnate families: Branicki, Potocki, Mniszeck, and others. The first mention of Pierre Rico de Tirregail's stay in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth dates back to 1752, when he received the rank of lieutenant in the infantry regiment of the Grand Crown Hetman Jan Kliment Branicki (1689–1771). In the architect's portfolio were included: the project and management of installation works on the water supply of the garden and menagerie in the city of Bialystok, the project of the palace with a garden in the city of Krystynopol, the palace in the village Pespa, a project of the Palace Chatsky-Felinsky in Lviv, a project for the modernization of the palace for Anthony Bielsky. Probably, the palace garden for the Greek Catholic Metropolitans in Lviv and the palace with a garden in Krakovets are his work as well. Pierre Ricaud de Tirregaille also made a detailed plan of the city of Warsaw on a scale of 1:1000 between 1762–1763. After an eleven-year stay in Poland, Pierre Rico de Tirregail moved to Berlin. In Berlin, he received a position in the military engineering corps and a position as a teacher at the court of King Frederick II of Prussia. In 1772, in Potsdam, he published a numismatic treatise devoted to Rossian medals of the eighteenth century.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
This article provides, for the first time, an overview of all images (drawings and prints) sent by the Dutch microscopist Antoni van Leeuwenhoek (1632–1723) to the Royal Society during their fifty-year long correspondence. Analyses of the images and close reading of the letters have led to an identification of three periods in which Leeuwenhoek worked together with artists. The first period (1673–1689) is characterized by the work of several draughtsmen as well as Leeuwenhoek’s own improving attempts to depict his observations. In the second period (1692–1712) Leeuwenhoek worked together with one unknown draughtsman, while the work in the third period (1713–1723) can now be attributed to the young draughtsman Willem vander Wilt. This article also shows how Leeuwenhoek did not only rely on draughtsmen for the depiction of his own observations, but rather, how he worked together with them in his workshop to observe, confirm, and witness microscopic experiments, replicating the collaborative working methods of the Royal Society in Delft.

Abstract (sommario):
The French-colonial trading town of Montreal underwent a remarkable transformation from 1760 to 1860. Following the British conquest of New France, the powers vested to Catholic missionary orders were assumed by a Protestant administration. Given the diversity of settlers who were forced to live side by side in the more densely populated urban areas of the colony, ecclesiastical design became a vehicle for the expression of national and denominational identities. By examining church production in Montreal during the period, those cultural imperatives inscribed by French, English, Scottish, Irish and American denominations become apparent. The assimilation of building traditions resulting from the interaction of communities was critical in determining the eclectic architectural character of Canada's first metropolis.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The present thesis examines the trends, structure and fluctuations in Scotland's foreign trade, 1700- 1760 in two parts. Whilst Part I is a general discussion of Scotland's trade, the commodity trades with Germany will be examined en detail in Part II, being a case study of what can be achieved using an eclectic variety of Scottish and other north-western European records in a synoptic view. The analysis commences (chapter 2) with a detailed examination of the institutional framework ("English Restoration Customs System', 1660) that became applicable in Scotland in 1707, in particular a description of the newly introduced customs system and the duties charged, as well as the change in the level of taxation in 1707 and subsequent alterations. With regard to the detailed examination of the Scottish trade volume in chapters 4-6, a particular look will also be taken at the relevance and responsibility of the institutional super-structure for discouraging certain branches of economic activity and thus creating or at least co-determining a particularly Scottish pattern of overseas trade, 1700- 1760. Chapter 3 consists of a detailed analysis of the scope and reliability of the available quantitative sources. Particular attention will be directed at the Scottish customs accounts, which are unique in an eighteenth century (North-western) European context. The technical analysis of the customs accounts will be supplemented by an analysis of the available post-1755 trade statistics, as well as a detailed examination of the match between information contained in the former and the port books for the first year in which both are preserved completely (1755). This discussion will be supplemented by an analysis of other previously unused Customs materials. Chapter 4 examines the composition of the Scottish trade volume in 1707, as well as the most probable trajectory for commercial fluctuations between 1707 and 1755. Some insights into the possible distribution of the Scottish trade volume across ports after 1707 will be presented. The broad discussion will be augmented by an analysis of select branches of the commodity trades, which can be captured slightly more reliably from contemporary statistics, such as the colonial trades, the wine, as well as the grain trades. This analysis is followed by an examination of two unrecorded trades - trade with England and tea smuggling - which both attained significantly large dimensions in total Scottish commercial activity, and which have been so far overlooked by scholars. Chapter 5 takes up the analysis in chapter 4 by providing a concise overview on the composition of the Scottish trade volume in 1754-1760. Chapter 6 draws Part Ito a close by examining possible links between trade and economic growth, as well as the role trade played for the Scottish economy. In the end the peculiar eighteenth-century Scottish trade pattern will be explained. Part II is an en detail examination of Scotland's trade with the German Empire in the period under consideration. Drawing on both Scottish and German customs accounts, the commodity trades will be the subject of discussion in chapter 7. Chapter 8 traces the commercial patterns of individual merchants. The main aim of this chapter is to highlight the European contingency matrix of commodity markets, exchange rates and payments mechanisms, which Scots merchants were exposed to, which they had to consider in their business decisions, and which determined the overall profit levels in the intra-European trades. 1.1 Hypotheses 5

Doolen, Andrew Vincent. "Fugitive nation: Contagious democracies in American literature of the early national period, 1793-1838". Diss., The University of Arizona, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/280140.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Fugitive Nation: Contagious Democracies in American Literature of the Early National Period, 1793-1838 takes aim at the legislative gag-order on racial issues during the early national period. The gag-order suppressed national discussions of slavery and racial injustice until abolitionism rose in the 1830s, and its legacy continues today to impair our historical understanding of this deeply conflicted period of the American past. In order to restore this "fugitive" history, Fugitive Nation reconstructs a historical memory by uncovering the erstwhile silent record of race relations during the early national period, while demonstrating how this history of racial injustice is at the root of a liberal democratic tradition in American Letters. Thus, my study traces the ideological connections among disparate national narratives, from the more literary works of Charles Brockden Brown and James Fenimore Cooper, to the more popular and partisan documents circulating in the early national period. Magazines, congressional and society records, personal narratives, and documentary histories, such as cross-cultural accounts of the 1793 yellow fever epidemic and the annual reports of the American Colonization Society, provide a fuller understanding of the different roles race played in the nation's transformation from colony to state, even as they provide richly nuanced readings of early American literary works. Ultimately, Fugitive Nation corrects the fallacy of the "Great Contradiction"---that racial hierarchies were somehow inconsistent with a liberal Democracy---by demonstrating that America grew out of, and actually required, an increasingly punitive and divisive system of race relations.

A European influence is reflected in the ~ ir a.ted in Isfahan, a city in central Iran, which played an important role in niklD art. Lambkin, David Owen. "The effects of variation in wave period and flow asymmetry in sediment dynamics". Thesis, University of Southampton, 2004. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/17637/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The results of laboratory experiments are described, relating to aspects of hydrodynamics and sediment dynamics under second-order Stokes type waves (or flows), of varying degrees of asymmetry. The majority of the measurements related to laminar and/or transitional flow conditions and were made using an oscillating trolley apparatus. The transition to turbulence over smooth beds has been reported previously in terms of a (single) critical flow amplitude Reynolds number, Recrit=U∞a/ν. On the basis of observations undertaken using sinusoidal flows (Li, 1954) and during the present study, this is found to be the case for wave periods of T>3.5s, where mean Recrit=1.66×105. However, for T<3.5s, it is shown that Recrit decreases in proportion to T. On the basis of the observations made by Li (1954), Manohar (1955) and during the present study, transition over rough (granular) beds is described by Recrit=c(a/D), where c is a coefficient that, for relatively fine sediment (D<275μm), is a linear function of T; for relatively coarse sediment (D>421μm), it is a linear function of D. At large values of Recrit, corresponding to longer wave periods together with relatively small bed roughness length-scales, the observed values deviate from the rough-bed relationship and tend towards the smooth-bed limiting value. Flow asymmetry acts to stabilise the boundary layer, increasing either the critical boundary Reynolds number RE 2ν /ω ν crit c =U (in the case of smooth beds), or Recrit (in the case of rough beds), following a non-linear relationship. Regulating mechanisms are proposed by which the transition to turbulence is governed over (relatively) smooth and/or rough beds. Of principle importance is the balance between the stabilising effect of fluid acceleration and the destabilising effects of vertical gradients in the horizontal velocity (thought to be important in regulating transition over a smooth-bed) and localised eddy formation around individual grains on the bed (similarly over rough beds). The threshold of motion for non-cohesive, sand-sized sediment is expressed typically as a critical bed shear stress amplitude, τo, relative to the resistant properties of individual grains (due to gravity). On this basis, numerous critical shear stress (e.g. the well known approach of Shields, 1936) and velocity amplitude relationships have been presented elsewhere. Previously, Voulgaris et al. (1995) have identified that a higher τo is required to cause threshold at smaller wave periods. On the basis of a large number of observations undertaken (elsewhere, and as part of the present study) using similar equipment, a negative linear relationship has been established between T and τo; this becomes progressively more significant, for threshold occurring under larger values of Re (into the transitional regime). Flow asymmetry has the effect of increasing τo crit; however, the critical orbital diameter for given conditions remains approximately constant, irrespective of the asymmetry. Using these data, in combination with detailed observations of the phase of the onset and the subsequent duration of sediment motion, it is suggested that (especially under (near) laminar flows) the threshold of motion is in response to a ‘time-‘ or ‘phase-mean’ shear stress, corresponding to some form of cumulative force. In addition, under turbulent or partially turbulent flow conditions, the stochastic distribution of the instantaneous shear stress is broader under waves of larger T and/or smaller R; this permits similarity in the occurrence of high-shear events, over a range of conditions. However, the mean τ0 crit decreases. Hence, an artefact or anomalous decrease is included, at longer wave periods, in the (time-mean) peak value of τo crit used to represent such flows.

Abstract (sommario):
The Budello tower is located on a slight promontory from which it dominates the entire bay of Teulada and the towers of Sant’Isidoro, Pixinni, Malfatano and Porto Scudo. The tower, built in 1601 with irregular ashlars of local stones (mainly of magmatic-intrusive origin), has a truncated cone shape, an external diameter of 10,2 m and a height of 11,80 m. Inside it consists of a single room, with a domed vault and a central pillar, equipped with a embrasure, a fireplace, a trap door in the cistern, and a staircase, from which the square of arms was accessed. It was a torre de armas garrisoned by: 1 commander (in 1603), 1 artilleryman and 4 soldiers (1767), 1 artilleryman and 3 soldiers (1801), 1 artilleryman and 4 soldiers (1812). Although it underwent several restorations, documented as early as the years 1617-1619, the tower remained generally in good condition until the period 1763-1784, in which new restoration works were carried out including the closure of the parade ground with a classic parapet with gunboats and battlements. Other restoration works are carried out in 1808, 1819 and 1840. The tower remained in operation until 1843. Like all the other coastal fortifications, it was then definitively demilitarized with the Regio Decreto of 25 April 1867. Specific objectives of the research are the petrographic and physical-mechanical analysis of the stones and ancient mortars used in the construction of the tower, the structural analysis of the building and related geometric-constructive characteristics. The final intention is to understand the decay processes taking place on the tower both in terms of materials and static-structural aspects, and to envisage possible restoration interventions to be implemented aimed at its conservation.

Abstract (sommario):
Iranian gardens, known as Chaharbagh, are symbols of paradise. Garden discourse developed and flourished during the Safavid period (1501–1736) and had a significant influence on many arts, including carpet weaving. The appearance of a special type of garden carpet called Chaharbagh dates back to this time. Iranian carpets have become a kind of heterotopia of the Iranian garden. They not only follow the landscape structure, but also reflect important conceptual aspects of Iranian garden art.

Abstract (sommario):
Chagatai Turkish is a written language that continued to be used from the beginning of the 13thcentury to the beginning of the 20th century. After Navoi’s death, various dictionaries began to be written in every corner of the Islamic world to make his works easier to read. These dictionaries, which were generally written in the Ottoman Empire, Iran, Azerbaijan, India and Turkistan and have a greatvalue for the history of the development of the Turkish language, formed a school of lexicography. In the field of Iran, Chagatai Turkish dictionaries have been arranged in order to understand the works of Ali Sher Navoi. After the death of Navoi, many Chagatai Turkish dictionaries were written during the three successive Turkish dynasties, Safavids (1501-1736), Afshars (1736-1747) and Qajars (1795-1925). Nezrali’s dictionary, Feraghi’s Miftâhu'l-Lugatdictionary, Bedâyiü’l-Lugatand Abdulcemil Nasîri’s Kitab-i Türkiare among the dictionaries written during the Safavid period. A giant work like Senglah, written by Mirza Mehdi Khan, who was the author and historian of Nadir Shah during the Afshar dynasty, is extremely important in terms of showing the importance of Chagatai Turkish in this period. The interest in Chagatai Turkish continued during the period of Qajar rule, which is a continuation of the Turkish states in Iran; Dictionaries such as Hulasa-yi Abbasi, Et-Tamga-yı Nâsiriand Fethali Kachardictionary were written. In this study, information about the Chagatai Turkish Dictionary of Fethali Kachar, Feraghiand Nezrali, which we have previously published in Turkey, is given, and then the examples of Babur Shah, who are referenced as witnesses in these works and emphasized.

Murray, Autumn, e David Biedenharn. Sediment supply from bank caving on the Lower Mississippi River, 1765 to present. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), agosto 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/45281.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Bank caving rates and associated total sediment supply were calculated along the Lower Mississippi River from Cairo, IL, to Baton Rouge, LA, using historical maps between 1765 and 1992. Comparison of these maps reveals that the added sediment loads from bank erosion have greatly declined through time. During the Pre-cutoff period (1765–1931), the cumulative sediment supply from bank caving between Cairo, IL, and Baton Rouge, LA, ranged from about 395 million cubic yards/year (MCY/yr) to 535 MCY/yr with a median value of approximately 470 MCY/yr. The 1880-1931 period had the highest rate of sediment supply from bank caving with a median value of approximately 610 MCY/yr. By the 1990s, the sediment supply from bank erosion was essentially eliminated as a result of the revetment program, with significant erosion being observed at only a few locations, totaling approximately 17 MCY/yr. This equates to approximately a 96% reduction in the amount of total sediment being supplied to the channel system from bank erosion.

Eldar, Avigdor, e Donald L. Evans. Streptococcus iniae Infections in Trout and Tilapia: Host-Pathogen Interactions, the Immune Response Toward the Pathogen and Vaccine Formulation. United States Department of Agriculture, dicembre 2000. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2000.7575286.bard.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
In Israel and in the U.S., Streptococcus iniae is responsible for considerable losses in various fish species. Poor understanding of its virulence factors and limited know-how-to of vaccine formulation and administration are the main reasons for the limited efficacy of vaccines. Our strategy was that in order to Improve control measures, both aspects should be equally addressed. Our proposal included the following objectives: (i) construction of host-pathogen interaction models; (ii) characterization of virulence factors and immunodominant antigens, with assessment of their relative importance in terms of protection and (iii) genetic identification of virulence factors and genes, with evaluation of the protective effect of recombinant proteins. We have shown that two different serotypes are involved. Their capsular polysaccharides (CPS) were characterized, and proved to play an important role in immune evasion and in other consequences of the infection. This is an innovative finding in fish bacteriology and resembles what, in other fields, has become apparent in the recent years: S. iniae alters surface antigens. By so doing, the pathogen escapes immune destruction. Immunological assays (agar-gel immunodiffusion and antibody titers) confirmed that only limited cross recognition between the two types occurs and that capsular polysaccharides are immunodominant. Vaccination with purified CPS (as an acellular vaccine) results in protection. In vitro and ex-vivo models have allowed us to unravel additional insights of the host-pathogen interactions. S. iniae 173 (type II) produced DNA fragmentation of TMB-8 cells characteristic of cellular necrosis; the same isolate also prevented the development of apoptosis in NCC. This was determined by finding reduced expression of phosphotidylserine (PS) on the outer membrane leaflet of NCC. NCC treated with this isolate had very high levels of cellular necrosis compared to all other isolates. This cellular pathology was confirmed by observing reduced DNA laddering in these same treated cells. Transmission EM also showed characteristic necrotic cellular changes in treated cells. To determine if the (in vitro) PCD/apoptosis protective effects of #173 correlated with any in vivo activity, tilapia were injected IV with #173 and #164 (an Israeli type I strain). Following injection, purified NCC were tested (in vitro) for cytotoxicity against HL-60 target cells. Four significant observations were made : (i) fish injected with #173 had 100-400% increased cytotoxicity compared to #164 (ii) in vivo activation occurred within 5 minutes of injection; (iii) activation occurred only within the peripheral blood compartment; and (iv) the isolate that protected NCC from apoptosis in vitro caused in vivo activation of cytotoxicity. The levels of in vivo cytotoxicity responses are associated with certain pathogens (pathogen associated molecular patterns/PAMP) and with the tissue of origin of NCC. NCC from different tissue (i.e. PBL, anterior kidney, spleen) exist in different states of differentiation. Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis revealed the "adaptation" of the bacterium to the vaccinated environment, suggesting a "Darwinian-like" evolution of any bacterium. Due to the selective pressure which has occurred in the vaccinated environment, type II strains, able to evade the protective response elicited by the vaccine, have evolved from type I strains. The increased virulence through the appropriation of a novel antigenic composition conforms with pathogenic mechanisms described for other streptococci. Vaccine efficacy was improved: water-in-oil formulations were found effective in inducing protection that lasted for a period of (at least) 6 months. Protection was evaluated by functional tests - the protective effect, and immunological parameters - elicitation of T- and B-cells proliferation. Vaccinated fish were found to be resistant to the disease for (at least) six months; protection was accompanied by activation of the cellular and the humoral branches.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
The US Congress codified the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (NHPA), the nation’s most effective cultural resources legislation to date, mostly through establishing the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The NHPA requires Federal agencies to address their cultural resources, which are defined as any prehistoric or historic district, site, building, structure, or object. Section 110 of the NHPA requires Federal agencies to inventory and evaluate their cultural resources, and Section 106 requires them to determine the effect of Federal undertakings on those potentially eligible for the NRHP. Fort Hunter Liggett is located on California’s Central Coast within Monterey County. The fort has been used as a training facility for large-scale maneuvers and live-fire exercises since its establishment as a US Army training facility in 1941. The periods of significance for Criterion A are: from 1769 to 1833, relating to the founding and development of Mission San Antonio de Padua; from 1834 to 1923, relating to Euro-American land grants and ranchos; from 1923 to 1940, relating to Hearst’s purchase of the property and subsequent development; from 1940 to 1945, relating to the establishment of the Hunter Liggett Military Reservation (HLMR) and activities related to WWII; from 1959 to 1970, relating to the establishment and buildup of CDEC; and from 1975 to 1980, relating to HLMR’s redesignation as Fort Hunter Liggett and associated development. This report provides a comprehensive historic context for ranges, features, and buildings at Fort Hunter Liggett in support of Section 110 of the NHPA.
