Abstract (sommario):
Despite successful fabrication of gecko-inspired fibrillar surfaces with strong adhesion forces, how to achieve an easy-removal property becomes a major concern that may restrict the wide applications of these bio-inspired surfaces. Research on how geckos detach rapidly has inspired the design of novel adhesive surfaces with strong and reversible adhesion capabilities, which relies on further fundamental understanding of the peeling mechanisms. Recent studies showed that the peel-zone plays an important role in the peeling off of adhesive tapes or fibrillar surfaces. In this study, a numerical method was developed to evaluate peel-zone deformation and the resulting mechanical behaviour due to the deformations of fibrillar surfaces detaching from a smooth rigid substrate. The effect of the geometrical parameters of pillars and the stiffness of backing layer on the peel-zone and peel strength, and the strong attachment and easy-removal properties have been analysed to establish a design map for bio-inspired fibrillar surfaces, which shows that the optimized strong attachment and easy-removal properties can vary by over three orders of magnitude. The adhesion and peeling design map established provides new insights into the design and development of novel gecko-inspired fibrillar surfaces.

Abstract (sommario):
In this research, an effective method to fabricate various metallic nanoand micro structure patterns is developed by combination of chemical stamping and selective peeling off technique. The feasibility of the process is experimentally studied and demonstrated. In this paper, the authors present the effects of the chemical treatment on the substrate surface on the formation of the nanodots array and its absorbance property. The results show that the chemical treatment by dropping Acetone solution on the quartz glass substrate strongly affects the morphology and absorbance property of the nanodots array. With the Acetone treatment on the substrate, the nanodots become smaller and more uniform in size through thermal dewetting process. Simultaneously, it results in blue shifted of the absorbance peak and enhancement of the absorbance peak intensity. The improvement of the optical property of the nanodots array is useful for plasmonic solarcell and bio sensing applications.

Abstract (sommario):
In order to realize functional integration, a new kind of sandwich panel was made. By carrying out quasi-static shear experiments, its elastic modulus and ultimate bearing capacity with different resin immersing thickness, additional layer thickness of resin and specimen thickness were investigated. The load - displacement curves and failure models were obtained, which were compared with the traditional aluminum honeycomb sandwich panel. The experiments indicated that the integrated aluminum honeycomb and epoxy resin sandwich panel’s shearing process undergoes three phases: elasticity, yield and destruction. The specimen’s elastic modulus and ultimate bearing capacity increase with the increase of the resin thickness, additional layer thickness of resin and the specimen thickness, which greatly improve compared to the traditional sandwich structure. The composite layer and the core show good stability under shearing process, and there is no peeling-off or cracking between the composite layer and the core.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractIt is still a challenge to achieve large-area preparation of robust superhydrophobic surfaces with strong mechanical stability. Here, a simple and low-cost method to prepare robust decoupling superhydrophobic coatings on aluminum (Al) alloys substrate has been presented. The superhydrophobicity and robustness of decoupling coatings are realized by structuring surfaces at two different length scales, with nanostructures for superhydrophobicity and microstructures for robustness. This prepared decoupling coating shows promising superhydrophobicity, with water contact angle (CA) of ∼158.4° and roll off angle (RA) of ∼3°. It also exhibits high repellency for impacting water droplets. Notably, the decoupling coating processes outstanding adhesion strength on the substrate after tape-peeling and cross-cut tests, also with promising wear resistantance after sandpaper abrasion and wear test. The friction coefficient of this decoupling coating is only ∼0.2. In addition, the robust decoupling superhydrophobic coating is applied to underwater buoyancy enhancement and fluid resistance reduction (drag reduction rate ∼30.09%). This decoupling superhydrophobic coating also displays promising self-cleaning and antifouling properties. Moreover, benefitting from the photocatalytic property of TiO2, this decoupling coating is also exploited for degrading organics to achieve seawater purification. This obtained decoupling superhydrophobic coating is expected to apply on other solids in marine fields, and the simple and eco-friendly method develops the potential practical application.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The last few years have seen considerable mathematical progress concerning the asymptotic structure of gravitational radiation in dynamical, astrophysical spacetimes. In this paper, we distil some of the key ideas from recent works and assemble them in a new way in order to make them more accessible to the wider general relativity community. In the process, we also discuss new physical findings. First, we introduce the conserved $f(r)$-modified Newman--Penrose charges on asymptotically flat spacetimes, and we show that these charges provide a dictionary that relates asymptotics of massless, general spin fields in different regions: Asymptotic behaviour near $i^+$ ("late-time tails") can be read off from asymptotic behaviour towards $\mathcal I^+$, and, similarly, asymptotic behaviour towards $\mathcal I^+$ can be read off from asymptotic behaviour near $i^-$ or $\mathcal I^-$. Using this dictionary, we then explain how: \textbf{(I)} the quadrupole approximation for a system of $N$ infalling masses from $i^-$ causes the "peeling property towards $\mathcal I^+$" to be violated, and \textbf{(II)} this failure of peeling results in deviations from the usual predictions for tails in the late-time behaviour of gravitational radiation: Instead of the Price's law rate $r\Psi^{[4]}|_{\mathcal I^+}\sim u^{-6}$ as $u\to\infty$, we predict that $r\Psi^{[4]}|_{\mathcal I^+}\sim u^{-4}$, with the coefficient of this latter decay rate being a multiple of the monopole and quadrupole moments of the matter distribution in the infinite past.

Abstract (sommario):
The main purpose of this study is to determine the metakaolin (MK) impacts on the concrete durability when the concrete is subjected to joint corrosion of SO42−,Mg2+ and, Cl−. Four groups of concrete test samples, which contained different MK contents, were designed and tested in order to see their physical property changes and macro-morphology differences during the cyclic corrosion process. And a series of approaches, including XRD, FTIR, SEM, and EDS, were applied to study the concrete phase composition changes and the micro-morphology features of all groups. According to the test results, when reaching 20 cycles, the concrete sample with 10% MK showed the best concrete physical properties; when reaching 120 cycles, the concrete with 5% MK content showed the best durability, produced similar amount of corrosion products to ordinary concrete, and presented relatively compacted micro-structure and small internal porosity. Mg2+ actually has a great impact on metakaolin. The corrosion product quantity increased significantly when MK admixture reached 15%. Due to the great number of produced M-S-H, the corrosive ions damaged the concrete for a second time, leading to serious aggregate peeling-off, powder surface of test samples, and porous micro-structure.

Abstract (sommario):
Objective: To investigate the role of concomitant Internal Limiting Membrane (ILM) peeling during surgery for macula off Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment (RRD) in preventing postoperative Epiretinal Membrane (ERM) formation; and its effect on the visual acuity. Methods: This was a prospective, quasi-experimental study conducted from August 2018 to July 2019 at LRBT Tertiary Eye Care hospital, Karachi. Fifty-six patients with macula off RRD were divided into groups A (with ILM peeling) and B (without ILM peeling) via non-probability convenience sampling. All patients underwent standard 3 ports pars plana vitrectomy with silicon oil tamponade. In Group-A, ILM was stained using 0.5% ICG. Patients were evaluated clinically and by spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT), pre- and post-operatively. Main outcomes recorded were best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and occurrence of ERM on SD-OCT. Results: There were 26 patients in Group-A and 30 patients in Group-B. At six months’ follow-up, ERM had not developed in any case in Group-A compared to five patients (16.7%) in Group-B. There was no statistical difference in mean BCVA change from baseline. Conclusion: ILM peeling during vitrectomy for RRD prevents the formation of macular ERM post-operatively. This may reduce the need of a second vitrectomy. However, visual outcomes were comparable to the non-ILM peeling vitrectomy. doi: https://doi.org/10.12669/pjms.37.3.3576 How to cite this:Mahmood SA, Rizvi SF, Khan BAM, Khan TH. Abstract (sommario):
AbstractTo develop an environment‐friendly detergent for textile relics adsorbing soil/rust stains, the relationship between surfactant types and concentrations, the nature of additives and the type of textile (e.g., cotton, linen, silk or wool) were systematically investigated. Results showed that the detergent formulations of sodium montmorillonite (5 g/L) as additives were overall the best options for soil stains removal on textile relics. Specifically, the most suitable surfactant for cotton, linen, silk and wool textiles relics adsorbing soil stains was rhamnolipid (8 g/L), tea saponin (6 g/L), tea saponin (8 g/L), alkyl glycosides (10 g/L), respectively. The detergent formulations of ascorbic acid (5 g/L) as additives were more beneficial for rust stains peeling‐off from the surface of the textile relics regardless of the type of surfactant and textile relics. But the optimal surfactants for different textiles relics were different. In detail, the most suitable surfactants for cotton, linen, silk and wool textiles relics adsorbing rust stains were separately rhamnolipid (10 g/L), Tea saponin (8 g/L), Tea saponin (6 g/L), Alkyl glycosides (6 g/L). This indicated that the washing effect of detergent formulation was related to the types of stains and textile relics' fiber. These findings not only demonstrated the necessity for developing detergent formulations for different textile relics, but also illustrated the complexity and diversity of the textile relics' stain‐washing work. Moreover, this work also assists understanding of the washing mechanism of textile relics and help the department of textile relics protection to properly wash textile relics and extend the life of textile relics.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis adresses two distinct subjects. The first part examines the asymptotic behavior of scalar waves in the Vaidya spacetime, describing a spherical white hole evaporating via emission of isotropic dust. The analysis focuses on the regularity of conformal scalar waves at the isotropic boundary (past and future) of the compactified spacetime, depending on the initial data of the conformal field. Additionally, we construct the conformal scattering operator, demonstrating its ability to encode the entire field evolution in the compactified spacetime. These findings rely on energy inequalities and vector field methods. The second part centers on analyzing incoming isotropic curves in the purely radiative Robinson-Trautman spacetimes of type D. In contrast to a previous study on Vaidya’s metric, these curves do not form the past horizon due to the solution’s geometry. The final chapter categorizes these curves, revealing a behavior akin to that observed in Vaidya’s spacetime

Abstract (sommario):
This work investigated air plasma effect on the Mode I crack growth resistance of adhesively-bonded metal-CFRTP dissimilar joints by using aluminum alloy (AA6061) and short-carbon-fiber-reinforced polyamide 66 (CFRPA66) as an example, and the Double Cantilever Beam (DCB) fracture testing as an evaluation method. The results showed that air plasma treatment can improve the fracture resistance of adhesively-bonded AA6061-CFRPA66 dissimilar joints with 140% enhanced Mode I fracture energy in maximum compared to non-treated ones. The quantified fracture energies from size effect method for both non-treated and plasma-treated cases are geometry-independent, whereas this is not true for modified beam theory causing geometry-dependent results. The foregoing improvement was confirmed from the failure surface morphology of plasma-treated specimens, showing fibers peeling off from CFRPA66 surface due to plasma-enhanced bonding between CFRPA66 and adhesive by the formation of covalent bonds at their interface. This study demonstrated air plasma as an efficient surface modification method to enhance the fracture resistance of adhesively-bonded metal-CFRTP dissimilar joints, and size effect method as a characterization method to properly quantify their fracture properties. These aspects are valuable in the area of multi-materials joining.
