Abstract (sommario):
The article traces the formation of the mystical experience of Nikolai Sergeevich Arseniev (1888–1977) on the basis of the memoir book “Gifts and Encounters of the Life Path” (1974), and the stages of his consideration of biblical studies. The analysis of Arseniev’s exegetical work “The Religious Experience of the Apostle Paul” (1935) is proposed. He was one of the Russian thinkers in whose writings the Holy Scripture occupied a central place, and almost all of his religious ideas grew out of New Testament books, and biblical concepts. As an exegete, he studied the problem of the Logos in the Gospel of John the Evangelist and the mystical experience of the Epistles of the Apostle Paul. The cross-cutting theme of Arseniev’s works was mysticism in ancient cults, the poetry of the Middle Ages, the works of the desert fathers, the texts of Russian and Western European ascetics of piety, religious philosophers (A. S. Khomyakov, I. V. Kireevsky, S. N. Trubetskoy, S. L. Frank) and biblical scholars. He relied on the mystical experience of the Church, the unity of Christians. In the Epistles of the Holy Apostle Paul, Arseniev emphasized the mysticism of life in Christ, Christian realism, the realism of the Cross of the Lord, and the realism of Resurrection. In general, the mystical experience of Paul, his preaching and activity, according to Arseniev, differs from “our usual experience” and is more real, since the apostle is “subdued”, “captured” by Christ, His fullness, and the grace of God.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT This essay addresses the notion of "screenplay" elaborated by the film director Pier Paolo Pasolini, in his essay "The Screenplay as a 'Structure That Wants to be Another Structure'," with reference to his Project for a Film of St. Paul. Pasolini's St. Paul, which would have transposed the story of the apostle into our own day, by situating it in New York (Rome), Paris (Jerusalem), present day Rome (Athens), and London (Alexandria), never made it to film. The project, however, gives the whole of Pasolini's cinematographic poetic in condensed form; it is a text which inhabits, in a critical and self-conscious way, the space between writing and film which is proper to the screenplay. The aim of this essay is to show the movement, the play of allusions and references, that form the very basis of the cinematographic screenplay.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of the article is to draw attention to modern Russian opera, its multifaceted study in university courses. In this regard, the operatic heritage of Russian composers of the last decades of the twentieth century is a significant artistic phenomenon. Note an undoubtedly important point: the search for new forms of synthesis on the musical and theatrical stage is not an end in itself for Russian masters, but rather an opportunity to embody current topics and ideas through the artistic prototypes they choose. At the same time, one of the characteristic trends of the end of the last century was the peculiar immersion of opera in its own historical past, which contributed to the disclosure of the deep properties of its genre components. Let us name just a few works that have attracted the attention of directors, conductors, performing musicians, and researchers. These are “Mary Stuart”, “Visions of Ivan the Terrible” and “Hamlet” by S. Slonimsky, “Till Ulenspiegel” and “The Mystery of the Apostle Paul” by N. Karetnikov, “Lolita” by R. Shchedrin and “The Foam of Days” by E. Denisov, “The Prophet” and “Young David” by V. Kobekin, “Antigone” by V. Lobanov and “When Time Runs Out of the Banks” by V. Tarnopolsky. On the example of N. N. Karetnikov’s large-scale opuses "Till Ulenspiegel" and "The Mystery of the Apostle Paul", the modern principles of musical and theatrical dramaturgy and features of genre formation are revealed.

Abstract (sommario):
Anyone who wants to say something about the earliest Christian use ofChristosshould start with the oldest written sources: the (genuine) letters of Paul.1.1.1. Paul's use χριοτòς has been set out convincingly by N. A. Dahl1and W. Kramer.2The apostle uses the term very frequently: 270 out of the 531 occurrences of the word in the New Testament are found in the genuine letters of Paul.3He also uses it in combinations with other words: Jesus Christ, Christ Jesus, Jesus Christ the Lord; but never in the combination κúρως χριτóς.4Certain patterns can be recognized in the use of Jesus Christ and Christ Jesus and also in the use of the article with χριτóςbut nowhere with a clear difference in meaning.5Dahl says: χριτóς is never a general term; the word is also never used as a predicate. Paul never feels the necessity to state ‘Jesus is the Christ’; a genitive is never added (Paul does not use χριτòς κυριου or related expressions) and also Ίηιοṽςò Χριιτóς is not found.6

Abstract (sommario):
The topic “Gogol and Bukharev” has moved into literary studies from the theological sphere. V. A. Voropaev was one of the first to turn to its philological understanding, who included the book by O. Feodor (Bukharev) “Three Letters to Gogol written in 1848” in the context of the problem of perception of “Selected passages from correspondence with friends” in the criticism of the XIX century. It seems that no less significant for modern science is the question of the ideological community of the writer and the theologian, their influence on each other, which left a mark in the activities of each of them. The purpose of the article is to use the material of memoirs and journalistic texts from the last third of the 19th – early 20th centuries to determine the most significant factors that served as a prerequisite for the spiritual rapprochement of Gogol and Bukharev. The research material was published in pre-revolutionary periodicals (“Theological Bulletin”, “Orthodox Interlocutor”, etc.) memoirs, notes, obituaries dedicated to Archimandrite Theodore and containing in one way or another information about his acquaintance with Gogol. The materials are analyzed in an interdisciplinary aspect: the historical and literary method is complemented by methodological tools of receptive aesthetics and biblical theology. Based on the results of the study, it was concluded that both Gogol and Archimandrite Theodore (Bukharev) had an interest in the personality and theology of the Apostle Paul. It seems that this circumstance played a decisive role in the ideological and spiritual rapprochement of the writer and the theologian. Beginning in the late 1840s, Bukharev prepared a number of scientific and theological works on the Apostle Paul (“The Teaching of the Ap. St. Paul on the Antichrist in the 2nd Epistle to the Thessalonians”, “Several articles on the Holy Apostle Paul”, “On the authenticity of the Apostolic Epistles”, "On the Epistle of the Apostle Paul to the Philippians”, “On the Epistle to the Romans”, etc.), laid the foundations for the study of the apostolic part of the New Testament in Russian biblical studies. Probably, Archimandrite Theodore became a kind of consultant for Gogol on the interpretation of the letters of the Apostle Paul. Both the writer and the theologian can be called “disciples of the Apostle Paul,” who drew from his epistles a set of theological ideas that largely determined their religious experience, and in relation to Gogol, their aesthetic concept. It is difficult to say unequivocally who influenced whom – the theologian or writer – because there is almost no direct evidence that reports on the specific content and nature of Gogol’s conversations with Father Theodore. Most likely, the influence was mutual and equivalent, since they were united by common ideas, interests and a common mentor in the interpretation and application of Christian teaching in life – St. Paul the Apostle.

Abstract (sommario):
Solanum tuberosum cv. Elmer's Blue is one of a number of heritage potato accessions maintained at Cornell University that exhibit virus-like symptoms of stunting and a leaf yellowing or a mottle mosaic. Testing of this cultivar by double-antibody sandwich (DAS)-ELISA revealed that it was infected with Potato virus S (PVS) but none of the other common potato viruses screened for in North American potato certification programs (3). Mechanical inoculation of sap from potato cv. Elmer's Blue onto Nicotiana debneyii, N. megalosiphon, N. occidentalis, and N. tabacum produced a range of yellowing and mosaic symptoms (symptomless on N. tabacum), indicating the presence of a transmissible agent, but all these hosts tested negative for PVS. To identify possible viruses, reverse transcription (RT)-PCR assays involving generic primers for different groups of viruses were performed on the potato and the Nicotiana spp. Degenerate primers specific to members of the genus Potexvirus (4) amplified a 600-bp region from the symptomatic potato and N. debneyii. Nucleotide sequencing of the RT-PCR amplified product from potato cv. Elmer's Blue (Genbank Accession No. EF609120) and comparisons with GenBank sequences revealed the amplified sequence as having 91% identity with the genomic sequence of Potato aucuba mosaic virus (PAMV; Accession No. S73580). The presence of this virus in potato cv. Elmer's Blue and N. debneyii was confirmed by PAMV-specific antibodies (Agdia, Inc., Elkhart, IN) in a DAS-ELISA format. PAMV is reported to occur worldwide, but uncommonly, with most descriptive work from Europe (2). While this virus has been studied in North America (1,2), these reports employed virus stocks from Europe under experimental conditions or virus in tubers obtained directly from Europe; to our knowledge, there are no unambiguous reports of PAMV in naturally infected North American potato cultivars. By contrast, the PAMV-infected cultivar in this report is a selection originally from a Canadian grower, and although not grown commercially, it is maintained in garden and field plots in New York and other states. Abstract (sommario):
Impatiens necrotic spot virus (INSV; genus Tospovirus) was detected in experimental greenhouse-grown potatoes (Solanum tuberosum) and Nicotiana benthamiana in New York State in July and August of 2003 and 2004. Potato leaves exhibiting necrotic lesions with a concentric pattern similar to those induced by Tomato spotted wilt virus (1) were observed on cvs. Atlantic, Huckleberry, NY115, and Pentland Ivory. The presence of INSV was confirmed using double-antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and a rapid ‘ImmunoStrip’ assay (Agdia, Inc., Elkhart, IN). INSV-specific sequences were amplified from total RNA extracts using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction with ‘Tospovirus Group’ primers (Agdia, Inc.) and two independently amplified DNAs were sequenced. A common sequence of 355 nucleotides (GenBank Accession No. AY775324) showed 98% identity to coding sequences in an INSV L RNA. The virus was mechanically transmitted to potato and N. benthamiana and could be detected in asymptomatic, systemically infected potato leaves. Stems nodes and leaves were removed from infected potato plants, and sterile in vitro plantlets were established (2). None of the regenerated in vitro plantlets of cvs. Pentland Ivory (6 plantlets) or NY115 (5 plantlets) were infected with INSV. Two of ten regenerated cv. Atlantic plantlets initially tested positive, but INSV could not be detected after 6 months in tissue culture. In vitro tissue culture plantlets could not be established from infected cv. Huckleberry plants, even though they were consistently obtained from uninfected plants. Infected greenhouse plants were grown to maturity and the tubers harvested, stored for 6 months at 4°C, and replanted in the greenhouse. INSV could not be detected in plants from 26 cv. Huckleberry, 4 cv. NY115, or 4 cv. Atlantic tubers. Although this isolate of INSV was able to systemically infect potato, it was not efficiently maintained or transmitted to progeny tubers. This might explain why INSV has not been reported as a problem in potato production. Lastly, in both years, dying N. benthamiana provided the first sign of a widespread greenhouse infestation of INSV in a university facility housing ornamental and crop plants. INSV induced a systemic necrosis in N. benthamiana, and this host may be useful as a sensitive ‘trap’ plant indicator for natural infections in greenhouse production. References: (1) T. L. German. Abstract (sommario):
Ceratocystis fagacearum (T.W. Bretz) J. Hunt is considered to be the most destructive vascular pathogen of oaks (Fagaceae: Quercus spp.) in the eastern, north-central, and south-central United States. (1,2,4). All red oak species (subgenus Quercus: section Lobatae) are highly susceptible to C. fagacearum, and infected trees typically die within 3 months of first symptom expression. However, members of the white oak group (subgenus Quercus: section Quercus) are moderately to highly resistant to C. fagacearum and rarely die from oak wilt (1,3). In early August of 2008, we received branch samples taken from wilting red oaks (Q. rubra L.) growing in a residential neighborhood in Scotia, NY (Schenectady County). The endoconidial state of the oak wilt fungus, Thielaviopsis quercina (B.W. Henry) A.E. Paulin, T.C. Harr. & McNew, was consistently isolated from the xylem in the branches. The cultures were identified based on hyphal and conidial morphology on acidified potato dextrose agar (aPDA) as well as sequences of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) (GenBank Accession No. FJ347031) and large subunit (LSU) (GenBank Accession No. FJ347030) regions of nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA). The nucleotide identities for the ITS and LSU sequences were a precise match, 99 and 100%, to rDNA sequences (GenBank Accession Nos. AF043598 and AF222483, respectively) of other isolates of C. fagacearum. According to the homeowners at the site, 12 red oaks have died during the last 3 years, and each tree died within one growing season after oak wilt-like symptoms were noted. In a brief survey of nearby properties in late August of 2008, we found 12 additional trees that were either expressing crown symptoms of oak wilt (e.g., premature leaf casting, bronzing of leaf margins, and water-soaked leaves) or were standing dead and within close proximity (5 to 10 m) to symptomatic trees. Branch samples from four of the symptomatic trees revealed limited (spotted) or no vascular discoloration; however, C. fagacearum was isolated from each suspect tree on aPDA. Remnants of gray mycelial mats and associated pressure cushions were observed beneath the bark of one standing dead oak. The sweet fruit-like odor characteristic of the oak wilt fungus was immediately evident once the bark overlying the mats was removed. Prior to this discovery, the Susquehanna River in north-central Pennsylvania was considered to be the northeastern limit for oak wilt occurrence in the United States (2,4). To our knowledge, this is the first report of the fungus from New York and expands the known range of C. fagacearum to the northeast by at least 300 km, supporting the hypothesis that the range of this fungus continues to expand via animal vectors and/or human activities (2). An isolate of C. fagacearum from New York has been deposited at the Centraalbureau voor Schimmelcultures (CBS 123913). References: (1) D. N. Appel. Ann. Rev. Phytopathol. 33:103, 1995. (2) J. Abstract (sommario):
In winter 2007, disease symptoms were observed in stored yellow onion bulbs (Allium cepa) grown in New York (NY) in 2006. Similar symptoms were observed in bulbs produced in 2007, 2008, and 2009. Symptoms were associated with one to three bulb scales near the midsection. Infected scales were light brown to brown, not macerated, and lacking foul odors typical of onion bulbs infected with Burkholderia cepacia. Onion grower-packers located in Orange County, NY were concerned that onion lots were rejected following grading by inspectors who cut bulbs to check market quality. Extent of the problem statewide is not currently clear. Isolation attempts were made from symptomatic tissues onto nutrient agar plates (3), with incubation for 24 h at 26 to 28°C, and PA-20 (2), a semiselective medium for the isolation of Pantoea ananatis, with similar incubation for 4 to 6 days. Most strains that grew on PA-20 were gram negative and yellow pigmented with dark centers. Isolated strains were tentatively identified as P. ananatis on the basis of growth on PA-20, a positive indole and negative oxidase test, positive tests for catalase, fermentation of glucose, Voges-Proskauer, and citrate utilization; negative for phenylalanine deaminase, urease, nitrate reductase, methyl red tests, and hypersensitive response induction in tobacco. The BIOLOG (Hayward, CA) system indicated that all presumptive strains of P. ananatis utilized d-mannose, d-cellobiose, d-melibiose, l-inositol, d-arabinose, cellulose, glycerol, d-arabitol, and sucrose, but not glycogen, N-acetyl-d-galactosamine, malonic acid, l-fucose, or xylitol. Strains of P. ananatis recovered from diseased onions in Georgia (GA) (1) were included in all tests as positive controls. We used PCR primers suggested by R. D. Gitaitis (University of Georgia): PanITS1 (5′-GTC TGA TAG AAA GAT AAA GAC-3′) and AS2b (5′-TTC ATA TCA CCT TAC CGG CGC-3′). Together, they amplify the 16S-23S rDNA internal transcribed spacer region of 398 bp; the nucleotide sequences of six NY and three GA strains are identical to each other and 99.3% identical to P. ananatis LMG 20103 (GenBank CP001875) and 93.3% identical to P. stewartii (AJ311838). Pathogenicity tests were done in onion leaves. For inoculation, strains were grown on nutrient agar for 24 h and bacterial suspensions of ~108 CFU/ml were prepared in sterile water. Tips of healthy, greenhouse-grown onion leaves were cut and inoculum was applied to the cut surfaces with cotton swabs. Plants were incubated in a greenhouse for up to 2 weeks. Plants mock inoculated with water were symptomless. Bacteria were recovered from all lesions induced by artificial inoculation with the presumptive strains of P. ananatis. Recovered bacteria had characteristics of P. ananatis. Pathogenic strains from NY and GA produced off-white lesions that extended the length of the leaf, which was consistent with previous studies of the pathogenicity of P. ananatis (1). On the basis of microbiological and molecular analyses and pathogenicity tests, 14 NY strains, each isolated from a different diseased bulb, were identified as P. ananatis. To our knowledge, this is the first published report of P. ananatis causing a disease of onion in New York. References: (1) R. D. Gitaitis et al. USA Crop Prot. 21:983, 2002. (2) T. Abstract (sommario):
ObjectivesThis study investigated the sex differences in the associations between ideal cardiovascular health (CVH), measured by the American Heart Association’s Life’s Simple 7 metrics, and cardiovascular disease (CVD)-related biomarkers among an ethnically diverse cohort of women and men free of clinical CVD at baseline.SettingWe analysed data from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis conducted in six centres across the USA (Baltimore, Maryland; Chicago, Illinois; Forsyth County, North Carolina; Los Angeles, California; New York, New York; and St Paul, Minnesota).ParticipantsThis is a cross-sectional study of 5379 women and men, aged 45–84 years old. Mean age (SD) was 62 (10), 52% were women, 38% White, 11% Chinese American, 28% Black and 23% Hispanic.Primary measuresThe seven metrics (smoking, body mass index, physical activity, diet, total cholesterol, blood pressure and blood glucose) were each scored as 0 points (poor), 1 point (intermediate) or 2 points (ideal). The total CVH score ranged from 0 to 14. The CVD-related biomarkers studied were high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, D-dimer, fibrinogen, homocysteine, high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T, N-terminal pro B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and interleukin 6. We examined the association between the CVH score and each biomarker using multivariable linear regression, adjusting for age, race/ethnicity, education, income and health insurance status.ResultsHigher CVH scores were associated with lower concentrations of all biomarkers, except for NT-proBNP where we found a direct association. There were statistically significant interactions by sex for all biomarkers (p<0.001), but results were qualitatively similar between women and men.ConclusionA more favourable CVH score was associated with lower levels of multiple CVD-related biomarkers for women and men, except for NT-proBNP. These data suggest that promotion of ideal CVH would have similarly favourable impact on the reduction of biomarkers of CVD risk for both women and men.

Abstract (sommario):
Why do states want to acquire nuclear weapons? In other words, what drives nuclear-aspiring states? This is the basic question that the author seeks to address in this research. To do so, this research will focus on two standout cases: Iran and North Korea. By employing structural realism as a tool of analysis, the author argues that it is the structure of the international system that drives both Iran and North Korea to acquire nuclear weapons of their own. Specifically, it is the highly unequal distribution of power both regionally and globally that encourages both states to go nuclear. At the global level, both Iran and North Korea found themselves in hostilities with a much more powerful state, the United States. The hostilities and the fact that the United States is way more powerful increase the fear of being attacked in both countries. Similarly, at the regional level, both states face neighbors that are relatively more powerful and have alliances with the United States. Thus, this imbalance of power and the fear it created in both Iran and North Korea give them great incentive to go nuclear, as nuclear weapons would act as a deterrent against any possible aggression. This research is qualitative and based on the literature study data collection method. Abstract (sommario):
