Abstract (sommario):
The central character in Bartho Smit’s complex drama Christine is Paul Harmse. This essay focuses on the text and regards it as the psyche of the protagonist Paul Harmse. Jung’s theory of the collective unconscious and the archetypal figures that inhabit the collective unconscious is implemented in the analysis of the text. The characters are regarded as representations of the shadow and the anima. There is a prevailing conflict between Paul Harmse and the subconscious forces at work in his psyche.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of this article is to critically assess Friedrich Nietzsche’s accusation of Paul that he replaced the “gentle gospel” of Jesus with an ideology of punishment, forgiveness, and reward. The article argues that the Pauline perspective on reconciliation has not the purport to satisfy either divine wrath or human needs – whether born from particularistic ethnocentrism or liberal globalism. Besides a siscussion of the expressions used by Paul to articulate his kerygma about redemption the article demonstrates that for Paul, faith functions as response to God’s act of reconciliation. God’s righteousness is the most prominent result of being reconciled. Faith as response to God’s salvation implies therefore that transformation and ethics are two sides of a responsive conduct which follows when God, as a gift, expiates the inequities of human beings.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThis article examines two topics that emerge from N. T. Wright's Paul and the Faithfulness of the Gospel: Paul the Shammaite-zealot and the ‘great narrative’ of an Israel in exile, waiting for something. The perspective adopted is that of a historian, for whom the fundamental question is whether Wright's accounts approximate plausible reality two thousand years ago. With respect to the first topic, analysis of source material on the Pharisees in the pre-70 period renders Wright's association of Paul with the rabbinic ‘House of Shammai’ and zealotry doubtful in every part. Similar issues arise in relation to the second topic, where Wright's proposal is supported by a kind of proof-texting, without methodical concern for the nature, context, coherence, themes, rhetoric or meaning of texts in situ.

Abstract (sommario):
BackgroundFlavoured tobacco is increasingly popular with youth. The twin cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul, Minnesota restricted the sale of flavoured tobacco to adult-only tobacco shops in an effort to reduce youth access and exposure to these products. This observational study explores the impact of these policies on the retail environment.MethodsBetween November 2015 and April 2017, observational assessments were conducted at convenience and grocery stores preimplementation and postimplementation of flavoured tobacco restrictions in Minneapolis (n=41), Saint Paul (n=37) and the comparison city of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota (n=14).ResultsAfter policy implementation, significantly fewer of the convenience and grocery stores sold flavoured tobacco in Minneapolis (85.4% vs 39.0%, p<0.001, n=41) and Saint Paul (97.3% vs 8.1%, p<0.001, n=37). The average proportion of tobacco inventory that was unflavoured increased significantly in Minneapolis (42.9%±2.7% vs 56.7%±3.1%, p=0.002) and Saint Paul (40.8%±2.5% vs 70.3%±1.9%, p<0.001). Flavoured tobacco was available at significantly fewer convenience and grocery stores in Minneapolis (39.0%, p<0.001) and Saint Paul (8.1%, p<0.001) than in the comparison city of Brooklyn Park (100%, n=14). Most retailers complied with these policies by removing flavoured tobacco from their shelves.ConclusionsPolicies that restrict the sale of flavoured tobacco to adult-only tobacco shops are associated with decreased availability of flavoured tobacco in convenience and grocery stores and increased proportion of tobacco inventory that is unflavoured.

Abstract (sommario):
In this thesis, I present my published works in the broad field of medical microbiology. Over a period of thirty years I have worked in a range of settings,. including hospital and public health laboratories, major reference laboratories and academic science departments. I have studied significant public health issues associated with each position, and therefore, while there is no single theme in my work, the emphasis of my research has been very much on the development and validation of methods and their application to public health microbiology. My early work was on obligately anaerobic bacteria. I began to study Clostridium difficile during my doctoral research and continued for several years after I completed my PhD. My expertise in anaerobic microbiology led to several book chapters and ultimately to an undergraduate textbook and an edited volume on anaerobic microbiology methods. My work on anaerobic bacteria forms one of three themes in my commentary. During my tenure at the University of Ulster; I began to broaden my research to encompass pathogens in the environment. Areas of interest included the survival of pathogenic bacteria during anaerobic digestion of cattle slurry and the anaerobic bacterial flora of flax retting. I moved to the University of West Indies in Barbados, where for 13 years I taught microbiology to medical students and provided clinical microbiology support to the hospital and public health laboratories. This venue provided me with the opportunity to follow a diverse research agenda, with a strong concentration on diseases of local and regional public health importance. I have included some of this work in my third commentary theme, clinical and public health microbiology. My major contributions to the field have undoubtedly been in the diagnosis, taxonomy and epidemiology of leptospirosis. I began working on leptospirosis in 1992 in the former Medical Research Council laboratory in Barbados. My work here included both serological and molecular diagnostic studies, and epidemiological research on reservoir animals and other zoonotic diseases. After moving to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), my work was focussed on developing tools for molecular diagnosis and molecular typing of leptospires and on taxonomy of leptospires. At the CDC, I was also the Acting Chief of the Special Bacteriology Reference Laboratory. In this capacity, I had the opportunity to lead a group focussed on the identification and characterization of previously unrecognised bacterial pathogens. Some of this work is included in my third commentary theme. I moved to Saskatchewan in 2003, to my current position in the provincial public health laboratory. My research in Saskatchewan has been directed towards the use of molecular techniques for diagnosis and epidemiological typing of significant public health pathogens, while mentoring younger scientists. Community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus is a public health challenge in our communities and I have made significant contributions to a collaborative effort to understand and control these infections in Saskatchewan. In recent years I also have assumed a leadership role in biosafety and biosecurity regulatory issues and in quality assurance and proficiency testing. An abbreviated copy of my curriculum vitae is included to provide an indication both of the range of my research work and my other contributions to the field. In the interests of brevity, papers presented at conferences and published abstracts are not included.

Abstract (sommario):
The problem investigated in this study is the following: What is a valid interpretation and translation of µέλη άσθνέρα in 1 Corinthians 12:22? This problem can only be solved if Paul's body metaphor in 1 Corinthians 12 is investigated grammatical-historically, applying a valid theory of metaphor. The state of research on metaphors is established in order to determine a suitable theory of metaphor. Further, the state of research regarding Paul's use of the body metaphor in 1 Corinthians 12 and specifically 1 Corinthians 12:22 is determined. And 1 Corinthians 12:l-31 is interpreted applying the grammatical-historical method of De Klerk and Janse van Rensburg (2004). The theory of metaphor of Van der Watt (2000) and the accompanying method is chosen as suitable theory of metaphor. In terms of this theory, the presentation and representation of the body metaphor in 1 Corinthians 12 are determined by way of the grammatical-historical method. This determination leads the interpreter to a valid interpretation and translation of µέλη άσθνέρα in 1 Corinthians 12:22. It transpires that the presentation of the body metaphor is the living human body and the members/organs of the body, and that the representation is the church of Christ, i.e. the members of the church. The presentation of µέλη άσθνέρα in 1 Corinthians 12:22 is members of the body which are physically weaker, and the representation is members of the church who are perceived to be weak in faith because they are supposed to have received lesser gifts from the Spirit. On the basis of this interpretation, the presentation of the body metaphor is translated as follows in English: "the (seemingly) weaker members". The representation of the body metaphor is translated as follows in English: "the members who are seemingly weaker in faith.

Abstract: A more relevant repertoire for the viola emerged as a result of the search by composers and interpreters for the instrument's identity. Along with other composers and performers such movement showed Paul Hindemith as an important figure. He wrote several major works for viola including the sonatas Op.11 NA (1919) and Op.25 NA (1922). In spite of their chronological proximity these sonatas show clearly distinct styles. The present study examines the causes of that contrast and its consequences to practical interpretation. In order to investigate thoroughly the sonatas, Hindemith's life, work and ideas are also described. The composer's ability and interest in playing several instruments as well as a variety of styles within his work are also highlighted. In addition, the present work discusses the evolution of the writing for the viola that is rich in idiomatic elements demonstrating very specific aspects of the viola playing. The study of the sonatas is based on the analysis of their stylistic features associated with aspects of performance practice. The purpose of the present research is to offer musicians data that may contribute to an efficient performance in the communication with the audience

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (MTh)--Stellenbosch University, 2011.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study investigates the “clothe-” metaphor in the Pauline literature in terms of its contribution toward a Pauline baptismal theology. The relevant “clothe-” terms are identified via an analysis of the semantic domain of cloting, which are then grammatically analysed for specific tendencies. This poses certain constraints to the meaning of the metaphors on the way to exegesis. An exegetical study of nine Scripture portions that are identified via the semantical study follows: Gal 3:19-29; Col 2:11-15; 3:8-17; Eph 4:22-25; 1 Cor 15:49,53-54; 2 Cor 5:2-4; Rm 13:12-14; 1 Thes 5:8 and Eph 6:11-15. These texts are analysed exegetically with a specific focus on the theological meaning of the “clothe-” metaphors in Pauline theology. The usage of the “clothe-” metaphor is also considered in the non-Pauline and non-biblical texts, and the social and cultural context in which the metaphors are employed. The main meanings of the “clothe-” metaphor that emerges from the semantic, exegetical and contextual study, can be summarised as follows: 1) it is mostly used in close connection with baptism, 2) it mainly has a reciprocal function as a result of the middle voice in which it is typically used, and functions within a theologically imperative context where the subject of the action is personally and consciously involved, 3) it is used as a metaphor to resist evil, 4) it is used in an eschatological context, 5) it is closely related to the actualisation of the new identity in Christ, and 6) the socially participating character of the baptismal candidate at baptism is constituted by the “clothe-” metaphor. The meaning of the “clothe-” texts does not only contribute to a better understanding of Paul’s baptismal theology, but also to a better understanding of baptism from the perspective of the believer’s baptismal tradition. The suggestions towards the discussion about baptism focus on the deeper theological meaning of baptism, a better understanding of the points of departure in the respective baptismal traditions, and the contribution that the study of the Pauline “clothe-” metaphors make to the debate.

Abstract (sommario):
Although there are a lot of popular books available on the subject of hope I still believe that there is a need for another study on the phenomenon of hope. Especially where proper exegesis and a multidiscipline approach are taken into account. In this study I’ve researched the effect of a society in transition on hope. I suspect that the changes since 1994 have a significant influence on the attitude, thought and behaviour of the Afrikaner especially. To come to such a conclusion the study take theories of change in Sociology into account. Some information were gathered from papers. The reason for that is the influence papers have on the spirit of society, and in this case its influence on people’s hope. Unfortunately one of the conclusions is that a lack of hope can very well be one of the consequences of the changes in society since 1994. The contemporary study is followed by a study on hope in Paul’s letter to the Romans. The background of the author, the congregation and the theology of the letter were taken in consideration. In most of the cases I’ve used the verses in the letter where the word hope was used. Surprisingly there is quite a comparison between the letter of Romans and society today as far as the reasons that causes hopelessness. Therefore Romans can be of great value to give hope in a disorientated society. Until now we know that there is a lack of hope in society, and that Romans give us reason to hope, but what is the person looking like that we want to communicate with? The study on post modernity show us how this “new” paradigm looks like. Post modernity is very different to modernism. The latest paradigm is universal and no one and nothing can escape it. Social sciences, the arts, economy, science itself and the theology were largely influenced by post modernity. With its larger emphasis on spirituality it creates wonderful opportunities for preaching. On the other side though, one should also keep its threats in mind, especially the proneness to relativism and New Age. In the last chapter I use all the information and conclusions of the previous chapters to get to a homiletic strategy for a postmodern context. The most important part of this chapter is to conclude that confession is a suitable hermeneutical and homiletical tool for preaching in post modernity. There is no need to prove confession, it is about something that is believed. The Bible therefore is still as relevant as ever. Communication strategies are included to guide the preacher in the most effective way when preaching in a postmodern context. The chapter ends with certain specific homiletic contents from the Roman letter that can be used today. We can know for certain that hopelessness is part of our society today. However we’ve got the promise of Romans 15:13 that God stays our God of hope. Our tasks are to posision us homiletically, hermeneutically and strategically in such a way that we give our faith the best possible chance.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
The N-body Problem involves predicting the motion of a group of astronomic particles under the influence of each other’s gravitational field. Due to the nonexistence of closed-form analytical solutions for N bigger than 2, numerical methods must be employed, and those do not scale well for large numbers of bodies. Thus, we developed and investigated parallel, high performance N-body simulations in GPUs and multi-core CPUs, and found that, even with dynamic time steps and synchronization requirements, GPUs massively reduce the time required by the simulations. While multi-core CPUs also allow for large speedups, they are vastly outperformed by the former.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract A new compliant, over-running ratchet and pawl clutch with centrifugal throw-out has been developed that drastically reduces the overall part count as compared to traditional ratchet and pawl clutches. Part count for the pawl hub assembly was virtually eliminated by making the hub a single compliant mechanism. This results in large savings in manufacturing, assembly and maintenance costs. Peak torque output for a polypropylene clutch was measured at over 66.2 N-m with an over-running torque measured at < 0.01 N-m. A mathematical model has been developed to predict the rotational speed at which the pawls disengage from the ratchet when free-wheeling. This model was verified experimentally to be accurate within 5.2%. This clutch also demonstrates the advantage of compliant mechanisms to reduce assembly and manufacturing costs.

Abstract (sommario):
Sociodemographic and lifestyle aspects versus access to breast cancer treatment — Single Health System (SHS) and Supplementary Health — were evaluated in a prospective cohort of patients with breast cancer. This is a cross-sectional study with 705 patients. As compared with sociodemographic characteristics, 56.5% (n=398) of the patients were seen through Supplementary Health, and for both SHS and Supplementary Health patients, there is a higher frequency of women aged above 50 years, with 62.2% (n=191) and 51% (n=203) (p=0.002); married, 48.2% (n=148) and 66.6% (n=265) (p <0.001); white, 69.4% (n=213) and 82.1% (n=325) (p<0.001); and for the level of education, 37.1% (n=114) of those with SHS had completed high school and 55.7% (n=221) (p<0.001) of those with Supplementary Health had completed college. The first mammogram occurred between the ages of 18 and 40 years, 72.5% (n=206) of the SHS participants and 88.6% (n=342) (p<0.001) for Supplementary Health; own housing for 90.6% (n=278) and 89.4% (n=354) (p<0.001); denied tobacco use, 65.5% (n=201) and 74.7% (n=296) (p=0.005); and alcohol consumption, 87.6% (n=269) and 77.2% (n=305) (p<0.001). However, there was no difference regarding previous diagnosis of breast cancer in 55.3% (n=114) and 64% (n=178) (p<0.001) and the type of care; eutrophic body mass index was 38.4% (n=118) and 42.1% (n=167) (p=0.079), respectively. Access to SHS and supplementary health care, age above 50 years, married, white, level of education, age at first mammogram, home ownership, smoking habits, and consumption of alcoholic beverages were significantly different; BMI was not different in the two groups. Therefore, the lifestyle of SHS and Supplementary Health patients was statistically different in this cohort of patients.

Abstract (sommario):

Ley, Matt, Tom Baldvins, Hannah Pilkington, David Jones e Kelly Anderson. Vegetation classification and mapping project: Big Thicket National Preserve. National Park Service, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/2299254.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The Big Thicket National Preserve (BITH) vegetation inventory project classified and mapped vegetation within the administrative boundary and estimated thematic map accuracy quantitatively. National Park Service (NPS) Vegetation Mapping Inventory Program provided technical guidance. The overall process included initial planning and scoping, imagery procurement, vegetation classification field data collection, data analysis, imagery interpretation/classification, accuracy assessment (AA), and report writing and database development. Initial planning and scoping meetings took place during May, 2016 in Kountze, Texas where representatives gathered from BITH, the NPS Gulf Coast Inventory and Monitoring Network, and Colorado State University. The project acquired new 2014 orthoimagery (30-cm, 4-band (RGB and CIR)) from the Hexagon Imagery Program. Supplemental imagery for the interpretation phase included Texas Natural Resources Information System (TNRIS) 2015 50 cm leaf-off 4-band imagery from the Texas Orthoimagery Program (TOP), Farm Service Agency (FSA) 100-cm (2016) and 60 cm (2018) National Aerial Imagery Program (NAIP) imagery, and current and historical true-color Google Earth and Bing Maps imagery. In addition to aerial and satellite imagery, 2017 Neches River Basin Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data was obtained from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and TNRIS to analyze vegetation structure at BITH. The preliminary vegetation classification included 110 United States National Vegetation Classification (USNVC) associations. Existing vegetation and mapping data combined with vegetation plot data contributed to the final vegetation classification. Quantitative classification using hierarchical clustering and professional expertise was supported by vegetation data collected from 304 plots surveyed between 2016 and 2019 and 110 additional observation plots. The final vegetation classification includes 75 USNVC associations and 27 park special types including 80 forest and woodland, 7 shrubland, 12 herbaceous, and 3 sparse vegetation types. The final BITH map consists of 51 map classes. Land cover classes include five types: pasture / hay ground agricultural vegetation; non ? vegetated / barren land, borrow pit, cut bank; developed, open space; developed, low ? high intensity; and water. The 46 vegetation classes represent 102 associations or park specials. Of these, 75 represent natural vegetation associations within the USNVC, and 27 types represent unpublished park specials. Of the 46 vegetation map classes, 26 represent a single USNVC association/park special, 7 map classes contain two USNVC associations/park specials, 4 map classes contain three USNVC associations/park specials, and 9 map classes contain four or more USNVC associations/park specials. Forest and woodland types had an abundance of Pinus taeda, Liquidambar styraciflua, Ilex opaca, Ilex vomitoria, Quercus nigra, and Vitis rotundifolia. Shrubland types were dominated by Pinus taeda, Ilex vomitoria, Triadica sebifera, Liquidambar styraciflua, and/or Callicarpa americana. Herbaceous types had an abundance of Zizaniopsis miliacea, Juncus effusus, Panicum virgatum, and/or Saccharum giganteum. The final BITH vegetation map consists of 7,271 polygons totaling 45,771.8 ha (113,104.6 ac). Mean polygon size is 6.3 ha (15.6 ac). Of the total area, 43,314.4 ha (107,032.2 ac) or 94.6% represent natural or ruderal vegetation. Developed areas such as roads, parking lots, and campgrounds comprise 421.9 ha (1,042.5 ac) or 0.9% of the total. Open water accounts for approximately 2,034.9 ha (5,028.3 ac) or 4.4% of the total mapped area. Within the natural or ruderal vegetation types, forest and woodland types were the most extensive at 43,022.19 ha (106,310.1 ac) or 94.0%, followed by herbaceous vegetation types at 129.7 ha (320.5 ac) or 0.3%, sparse vegetation types at 119.2 ha (294.5 ac) or 0.3%, and shrubland types at 43.4 ha (107.2 ac) or 0.1%. A total of 784 AA samples were collected to evaluate the map?s thematic accuracy. When each AA sample was evaluated for a variety of potential errors, a number of the disagreements were overturned. It was determined that 182 plot records disagreed due to either an erroneous field call or a change in the vegetation since the imagery date, and 79 disagreed due to a true map classification error. Those records identified as incorrect due to an erroneous field call or changes in vegetation were considered correct for the purpose of the AA. As a simple plot count proportion, the reconciled overall accuracy was 89.9% (705/784). The spatially-weighted overall accuracy was 92.1% with a Kappa statistic of 89.6%. This method provides more weight to larger map classes in the park. Five map classes had accuracies below 80%. After discussing preliminary results with the parl, we retained those map classes because the community was rare, the map classes provided desired detail for management or the accuracy was reasonably close to the 80% target. When the 90% AA confidence intervals were included, an additional eight classes had thematic accruacies that extend below 80%. In addition to the vegetation polygon database and map, several products to support park resource management include the vegetation classification, field key to the associations, local association descriptions, photographic database, project geodatabase, ArcGIS .mxd files for map posters, and aerial imagery acquired for the project. The project geodatabase links the spatial vegetation data layer to vegetation classification, plot photos, project boundary extent, AA points, and PLOTS database sampling data. The geodatabase includes USNVC hierarchy tables allowing for spatial queries of data associated with a vegetation polygon or sample point. All geospatial products are projected using North American Datum 1983 (NAD83) in Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) Zone 15 N. The final report includes methods and results, contingency tables showing AA results, field forms, species list, and a guide to imagery interpretation. These products provide useful information to assist with management of park resources and inform future management decisions. Use of standard national vegetation classification and mapping protocols facilitates effective resource stewardship by ensuring the compatibility and widespread use throughout NPS as well as other federal and state agencies. Products support a wide variety of resource assessments, park management and planning needs. Associated information provides a structure for framing and answering critical scientific questions about vegetation communities and their relationship to environmental processes across the landscape.
