Abstract (sommario):
With the rapid development of Japanese information processing technology, problems such as polysemy and ambiguity at the text and dialogue level, as well as unregistered words, have become increasingly prominent because computers cannot fully “understand” the semantics of words. How to make the computer “understand” the semantics of words accurately requires the computer to “understand” the rules of converting and integrating words into words from the perspective of semantics. Traditional Japanese text classification mostly adopts the text representation method of vector space model, which has the problem of confusing classification effect. Therefore, this paper proposes the topic of constructing a semantic word formation pattern prediction model based on a large-scale annotated corpus. This paper proposes a solution that combines Japanese semantic word formation rules with pattern recognition algorithms. Aiming at this scheme, a variety of pattern recognition algorithms were compared and analyzed, and the naive Bayesian model was decided to predict semantic word formation patterns. This paper further improves the accuracy of computer prediction of Japanese semantic word formation patterns by adding part of speech. Before modeling, the parts of speech of words are automatically tagged and manually checked based on the original annotated corpus. In the research on predicting Japanese semantic word formation patterns, this paper builds a semantic word formation pattern prediction model based on Naive Bayes and conducts simulation experiments. We divide the eight types of semantic word formation patterns in the annotated corpus into two groups, and divide the obtained sample sets into training sets and test sets, so that the Naive Bayes model first learns semantic word formation rules based on the training sets of each group. Semantic word formation patterns are predicted on the test set for each group. The simulation results show that the prediction model of semantic word formation mode has a generally high degree of fit and prediction accuracy. The prediction model of semantic word formation pattern based on this theory can ensure that the computer can judge the semantic word formation pattern more accurately.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractWe propose a new method for mining frequent patterns in a language that combines both Semantic Web ontologies and rules. In particular, we consider the setting of using a language that combines description logics (DLs) with DL-safe rules. This setting is important for the practical application of data mining to the Semantic Web. We focus on the relation of the semantics of the representation formalism to the task of frequent pattern discovery, and for the core of our method, we propose an algorithm that exploits the semantics of the combined knowledge base. We have developed a proof-of-concept data mining implementation of this. Using this we have empirically shown that using the combined knowledge base to perform semantic tests can make data mining faster by pruning useless candidate patterns before their evaluation. We have also shown that the quality of the set of patterns produced may be improved: the patterns are more compact, and there are fewer patterns. We conclude that exploiting the semantics of a chosen representation formalism is key to the design and application of (onto-)relational frequent pattern discovery methods.

Abstract (sommario):
A strategy of automatic answer retrieval for repeated or similar questions in user-interactive systems by employing semantic question patterns is proposed in this paper. The used semantic question pattern is a generalized representation of a group of questions with both similar structure and relevant semantics. Specifically, it consists of semantic annotations (or constraints) for the variable components in the pattern and hence enhances the semantic representation and greatly reduces the ambiguity of a question instance when asked by a user using such pattern. The proposed method consists of four major steps: structure processing, similar pattern matching and filtering, automatic pattern generation, question similarity evaluation and answer retrieval. Preliminary experiments in a real question answering system show a precision of more than 90% of the method.

Abstract (sommario):
This study addresses claims made by two theories—the Alternative Projection and Verb Sensitive approaches—regarding an interpretation of possession attributed to certain ditransitive constructions. The Alternative Projection approach argues that an interpretation of possession is only available in the double object (DO) pattern expressed by English ditransitive verbs (1a) and is not available in the prepositional (PP) pattern (1b). The Verb Sensitive approach argues that this possession interpretation is either available for both the DO and PP patterns, or for neither pattern, depending on the class of ditransitive verb with which the patterns occur. (1a) The salesperson gave the young farmer the grain mixture. (1b) The salesperson gave the grain mixture to the young farmer. Both approaches posit a possession interpretation of the DO pattern across all ditransitive verbs. This study tests to what degree native English speakers interpret a meaning of possession from the DO and PP patterns through an online survey with 88 participants. Ditransitive verbs from five semantic classes are analyzed to determine if the interpretation of possession varies based on use of the DO or PP pattern (Alternative Projection) or by the semantic class of the verb (Verb Sensitive). The results do not support the Alternative Projection approach. The results suggest partial support for the Verb Sensitive approach, as semantic classes do not entirely follow the pattern predicted by this approach. Further, judgements reported in this study contradict some judgements reported in the literature, highlighting the importance of quantitative studies in evaluating theoretical claims. Abstract (sommario):
This study is aimed to investigate the explication of Javanese proverbs, and also to find the NSM semantic template pattern in Javanese language proverbs. This study integrates natural semantic metalanguage (NSM) into the semantic analysis to explain how the meaning of Javanese proverbs can be explained. In this study, the researcher uses a five-semantic template for English proverbs proposed by Goddard and Wierzbicka. The findings of the study indicate that not all of the semantic template is fulfilled in Javanese Proverbs. It means that there is not any pattern of NSM semantic template in Javanese language. However, the application of NSM sematic templates in explaining proverbs meaning is not only worthwhile but also practical in explicating the Javanese proverbs.

Abstract (sommario):
COVID-19 has affected people in nearly 180 countries worldwide. This paper presents a novel and improved Semantic Web-based approach for implementing the disease pattern of COVID-19. Semantics gives meaning to words and defines the purpose of words in a sentence. Previous ontology approaches revolved around syntactic methods. In this paper, semantics gives due priority to understand the nature and meaning of the underlying text. The proposed approach, FaD-CODS, focuses on a specific application of fake news detection. The formal definition is given by depiction of knowledge patterns using semantic reasoning. The proposed approach based on fake news detection uses description logic for semantic reasoning. FaD-CODS will affect decision making in medicine and healthcare. Further, the state-of-the-art method performs best for semantic text incorporated in the model. FaD-CODS used a reasoning tool, RACER, to check the consistency of the collected study. Further, the reasoning tool performance is critically analyzed to determine the conflicts between a myth and fact.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. It’s easily to obtain the geometric information of terrain features in a timely manner using advanced surveying and mapping methods, but it is impossible to obtain their semantic information with low latency due to the rapid development of cities. The popularity of GPS-enabled devices and technologies provide us a large number of personal location information. Moreover, it is possible to extract the personal or group behavior pattern due to the regularity of human behavior. Those conditions make it possible to extract and identify human behavior patterns from their trajectory data. In this paper, we present an automatic semantic map generation method that extract semantic patterns and take advantage of them to tagging spatial objects in an unknown region based on known semantic patterns. We study the regularity of trajectory data and build the semantic pattern based on the regularity of human behavior. Most importantly, we use known semantic patterns to identify the semantics of the stay points in the unknown region, and use this method to realize the semantic recognition of the stay points. Results of the experiments show the effectiveness of our proposed method.

Abstract (sommario):
A method for mining frequent patterns of individual user trajectories is proposed based on location semantics. The semantic trajectory is obtained by inverse geocoding and preprocessed to obtain the Top-k candidate frequent location item sets, and then the spatio-temporal sequence intersection and the divide and conquer merge methods are used to convert the frequent iterative calculation of long itemsets into hierarchical sets' regular operations, the superset and subset of frequent sequences are found. This kind of semantic trajectory frequent pattern mining can actively identify and discover potential carpooling needs, and provide higher accuracy for location-based intelligent recommendations such as carpooling and HOV lane travel (High-Occupancy Vehicle Lane). Carpool matching and recommendation based on semantic trajectory in this paper is suitable for single carpooling and relay-ride carpooling. the results of simulation carpooling experiments prove the applicability and efficiency of the method.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis presents a computational method for the inductive inference of explicit and implicit semantic design knowledge from the symbolic-mathematical syntax of design formulations using an unsupervised pattern recognition and extraction approach. Existing research shows that AI / machine learning based design computation approaches either require high levels of knowledge engineering or large training databases to acquire problem reformulation knowledge. The method presented in this thesis addresses these methodological limitations. The thesis develops, tests, and evaluates ways in which the method may be employed for design problem reformulation. The method is based on the linear algebra based factorization method Singular Value Decomposition (SVD), dimensionality reduction and similarity measurement through unsupervised clustering. The method calculates linear approximations of the associative patterns of symbol cooccurrences in a design problem representation to infer induced coupling strengths between variables, constraints and system components. Unsupervised clustering of these approximations is used to identify useful reformulations. These two components of the method automate a range of reformulation tasks that have traditionally required different solution algorithms. Example reformulation tasks that it performs include selection of linked design variables, parameters and constraints, design decomposition, modularity and integrative systems analysis, heuristically aiding design “case” identification, topology modeling and layout planning. The relationship between the syntax of design representation and the encoded semantic meaning is an open design theory research question. Based on the results of the method, the thesis presents a set of theoretical postulates on computable relationships between design syntax and semantics. The postulates relate the performance of the method with empirical findings and theoretical insights provided by cognitive neuroscience and cognitive science on how the human mind engages in symbol processing and the resulting capacities inherent in symbolic representational systems to encode “meaning”. The performance of the method suggests that semantic “meaning” is a higher order, global phenomenon that lies distributed in the design representation in explicit and implicit ways. A one-to-one local mapping between a design symbol and its meaning, a largely prevalent approach adopted by many AI and learning algorithms, may not be sufficient to capture and represent this meaning. By changing the theoretical standpoint on how a “symbol” is defined in design representations, it was possible to use a simple set of mathematical ideas to perform unsupervised inductive inference of knowledge in a knowledge-lean and training-lean manner, for a knowledge domain that traditionally relies on “giving” the system complex design domain and task knowledge for performing the same set of tasks.

Abstract (sommario):
Description logics are a family of knowledge representation that have been widely investigated and used in knowledge-based systems. The strength of description logics is beyond their modeling assets, it's their reasoning abilities. %Reasoning takes the shape of mechanisms that make the implicit knowledge explicit. One of the most common mechanism is based on the subsumption relationship. This relationship is a hierarchical relationship between concepts which aims to state if a concept is more general than another. The associated reasoning tasks aims to determine the subsumption relationship between two concepts. %Variables have been introduced to description logic to answer the needs of representing incomplete information. In this context, deciding subsumption evolved into two non-standard reasoning tasks known as matching and unification. Matching aims to decide the subsumption relationship between a concept and a pattern (i.e. a concept expressed with variables). Unification extends matching to the case where both entries are patterns. The semantics associated to variables can be qualified as non-refreshing semantics where assignment are fixed. In this thesis, we investigate reasoning with variables augmented with refreshing semantics. Refreshing semantics enables variables to be released and then given a new assignment. We define recursive pattern queries as terminologies that may contain variables leading to investigation of problems to answer recursive pattern queries over description logic ontologies. More specifically, we focus on the description logic el. Recursive pattern queries are expressed in the logic elrv, an extension of the description logic el with variables equipped with refreshing semantics.%We study the complexity of query answering and query containment in elrv, two reasoning mechanisms that can be viewed as a variant of matching and unification in presence of refreshing variables. Our main technical results are derived by establishing a correspondence between this logic and a variant of variable automata. While the upper bound is given by specific algorithms which are proven to be optimal, the lower bound is achieved by a reduction to halting problem of alternating turing machine. Thus leading to these problems being EXPTIME-complete

Abstract (sommario):
The research presented in this dissertation adopts an empirical Saussurean structuralist approach to elucidating the true meaning of the verb patterns characterised formally by vowel lengthening in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA). The verbal system as a whole is examined in order to place the patterns of interest (III and VI) in context, the complexities of Arabic verbal morphology are explored and the challenges revealed by previous attempts to draw links between form and meaning are presented. An exhaustive dictionary survey is employed to provide quantifiable data to empirically test the largely accepted view that the vowel lengthening patterns have mutual/reciprocal meaning. Finding the traditional explanation inadequate and prone to too many exceptions, alternative commonalities of meaning are similarly investigated. Whilst confirming the detransitivising function of the ta- prefix which derives pattern VI from pattern III, analysis of valency data also precludes transitivity as a viable explanation for pattern III meaning compared with the base form. Examination of formally similar morphology in certain nouns leads to the intuitive possibility that vowel lengthening has aspectual meaning. A model of linguistic aspect is investigated for its applicability to MSA and used to isolate the aspectual feature common to the majority of pattern III and pattern VI verbs, which is determined to be atelicity. A set of verbs which appear to be exceptional in that they are not attributable to atelic aspectual categories is found to be characterised by inceptive meaning and a three-phase model of event time structure is developed to include an inceptive verbal category, demonstrating that these verbs too are atelic. Thus the form-meaning relationship which is discovered is that the vowel lengthening verbal patterns in Modern Standard Arabic have atelic aspectual meaning.

Abstract (sommario):
The present Ph.D. thesis studied the uses of the Spanish particle se, its treatment by current romance dictionaries and its representation in a dictionary for learners of Spanish as a foreign language. The main objective is to propose a model for the representation of the verbs that present the use of se. For this, the following aspects will be analysed:  The review of related work in grammar studies (chapter 2) as well as lexicography (chapter 3).  The representation of pronominal uses in the current romance dictionaries, particularly in those for learners of Spanish as a second language (chapter 4).  The systematic analysis of se in corpora from the perspective of Hanks’ (2004) theory of Norms and Exploitations and Corpus Patterns Analysis (chapter 5 and 6).  The elaboration of a model of a verbal lexical entry for a dictionary of Spanish as a second language containing uses of se (chapter 7). The results of the thesis are mainly the elaboration of a database on Spanish pronominal verbs (chapter 6, Spanish CPA) and of a prototype of 20 lexical entries with the same verbs analysed with CPA (chapter 7).

Abstract (sommario):

This essay adopts a construction grammar approach to the linguistic pattern why don’t you. It argues that the pattern can have two different senses: an interrogative sense and a suggestive sense. Further it argues that the suggestive sense is a construction similar to the definition of a construction described by construction grammar theory.

In other words, the linguistic pattern why don’t you can have a specific underlying semantics that cannot be reached by an examination of its formal pattern.

Abstract (sommario):
Especially with the wide use of dynamic page generation, and richer user interaction in Web, traditional web usage mining methods, which are based on the pageview concept are of limited usability. For overcoming the difficulty of capturing usage behaviour, we define the concept of semantic events. Conceptually, events are higher level actions of a user in a web site, that are technically independent of pageviews. Events are modelled as objects in the domain of the web site, with associated properties. A sample event from a video web site is the '
play video event'
with properties '
video'
, '
length of video'
, '
name of video'
, etc. When the event objects belong to the domain model of the web site'
s ontology, they are referred as semantic events. In this work, we propose a new algorithm and associated framework for mining patterns of semantic events from the usage logs. We present a method for tracking and logging domain-level events of a web site, adding semantic information to events, an ordering of events in respect to the genericity of the event, and an algorithm for computing sequences of frequent events.

Abstract (sommario):
Weakly supervised semantic segmentation (WSSS) with image-level annotations has achieved great processes through class activation map (CAM). Since vanilla CAMs are hardly served as guidance to bridge the gap between full and weak supervision, recent studies explore semantic representations to make CAM fit for WSSS and demonstrate encouraging results. However, they generally exploit single-level semantics, which may hamper the model to learn a comprehensive semantic structure. Motivated by the prior that each image has multiple levels of semantics, we propose hierarchical semantic contrast (HSC) to ameliorate the above problem. It conducts semantic contrast from coarse-grained to fine-grained perspective, including ROI level, class level, and pixel level, making the model learn a better object pattern understanding. To further improve CAM quality, building upon HSC, we explore consistency regularization of cross supervision and develop momentum prototype learning to utilize abundant semantics across different images. Extensive studies manifest that our plug-and-play learning paradigm, HSC, can significantly boost CAM quality on both non-saliency-guided and saliency-guided baselines, and establish new state-of-the-art WSSS performance on PASCAL VOC 2012 dataset. Code is available at https://github.com/Wu0409/HSC_WSSS.

Abstract (sommario):
Refactoring UML models for evolution is usually carried out in an ad hoc way. These transformations can become an issue, since it is hard to ensure that the semantics of models is preserved. We provide a set of semantics-preserving transformations for UML class diagrams annotaded with OCL. Using the proposed transformations, software designers can safely define larger transformations and detect subtle problems when refactoring models. Semantics-preserving transformations can also be useful from design pattern introduction to MDA. We prove that our transformations are sound using a semantic model that is based on Alloy, which is a formal modeling language. Due to Alloy’s ammenability to automatic analysis, our approach may additionally bring such analysis to class diagrams.

Abstract (sommario):
The article is devoted to the analysis of the main forms of visualization in the media related to photo. The thematic visual concepts are described in accordance with the content of electronic media, which consider the impact of modern technologies on the development of media space. The researches of the Ukrainian and foreign educational institutions concerning the main features of modern photo is classificate. Modifications and new visual forms in the media are singled out. The main objective of the article is to study the visual concepts of modern photo and identify ideological and thematic priorities in photo projects. To achieve the main objective in the article a certain methodology were used. Due to the historical-theoretical description it was possible to substantiate the study of visual concepts. The conceptual-system method was used to study the subject of media photo projects. The main results of the research are the definition of visual concepts of photo on the example of electronic media and the identification of the main thematic features in the process of visual filling of the media space. Based on the study, we can conclude that today the information field needs quality visual content. For successful creation of visual concepts it is necessary to single out thematic features of modern photo and to carry out classifications on ideological and semantic signs. Given the rapid development of digital technologies, the topic of the scientific article we offer is relevant for scientists, journalists, media researchers, visual journalism experts and photojournalists. Modern space is filled with a large number of pictorial materials, which in most cases form specific images, patterns or stereotypes in the mind of the reader (viewer). Also important is the classification of photo used in journalistic publications. That is why there is a need to explore the content and principles of distribution of ideological priorities of photo in the media. The substantiation of scientists about the important place of photography in the modern media space and the future development of visual technologies, which already use artificial intelligence, is relevant.
