Lim Tyan Gin, Shaun, e Francesco Perono Cacciafoco. "From Pasir Ris to Pioneer: Singapore’s Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) names in relation to its identity." Onomastica 66 (2022): 147–71. http://dx.doi.org/10.17651/onomast.66.11.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This article examines the station names of 142 Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) stations across Singapore’s five fully operational MRT lines using primary sources (digitised newspapers, maps, and press releases) and secondary sources (scholarly research on Singapore place names and information from government agencies). There are two research objectives: firstly, to determine the common naming strategies of Singapore’s MRT station names, and secondly, to analyse features of Singapore’s socio-political and linguistic identity by studying these names. Common naming patterns of Singapore’s station names include associative names, where the station is named after nearby physical or man-made features; descriptive names, where the name describes a particular aspect of the area; and eponymous names, where the station is named after a famous person or entity. We argue that station names reflect the state’s language and socio-political policies and shed deeper light on some of the complex and contradictory forces at play in the nation’s linguistic and socio-political identity. Singapore’s language shift towards English is evident as English is frequently used to name stations, particularly among newer MRT lines, where the public can suggest and vote on station names. At the same time, there are toponyms in local languages like Malay that serve as indexes of localness of the area around the station, showing the cultural dimension that station names have as metaphors for the area’s history and heritage. Yet, Singapore’s pragmatic socio-political identity ultimately means that the practical, referential function of names takes precedence over the cultural functions of naming.

Abstract (sommario):
The exploitative sand mining in Selat District contributed to the economic growth; however, the local people were never aware that it had caused the environment to be degraded. The phenomenon of the exploitative sand mining is used as the theme and subject matter of an art creation. From what was observed by the artist, an insight into something contributed to a creative process. The problem was reflected in the form of language using the method of hyperbole. The art creation was created using the structured, spontaneous and intuitive creative steps and method which led to a unique elaboration of all the imaginary components and a creative metaphor and concept. The creation was designed in a studio before it was moved to or arranged around the mining area. The relation between the location of presentation and people could become a specific strength as it was in accordance with the context of the subject matter. The target of the art work did not only constitute an individual expression which was limited to the matter of common aesthetics but it was also used as the way of and the tool for transmitting (campaigning) an environmental issue. The art creation could be used to inspire people, as individuals and groups, to participate in the attempt made to preserve the eco-system

Abstract (sommario):
Introduction: The toddler years mark an important phase of fundamental growth that significantly shapes and influences a child's subsequent development. During this period, children's brains experience rapid growth which is often called the Golden Age. This phase is very important, so it requires careful attention to the child's growth and development to detect abnormalities as early as possible. Data collected at the Pasir Gintung Health Post shows that there were 12 children aged 2-4 years. Objectives: The main objectives include increasing parents' understanding in monitoring children's development, providing education regarding screening methods using the DDST approach, and actively monitoring children's development using the DDST method.Method: This Community Service was carried out using DDST (Denver Development Screening Test) measurements at the Pasir Gintung Health Post on Friday 5 January 2024. Results: The results of the DDST examination on 12 children showed that 10 children (83.4%) were declared normal, while 2 children (16.6%) had suspected development. Evaluation of children's overall growth and development includes gross motor skills, fine motor skills, speech, language, socialization and independence. Conclusion: These findings underline the important role of parental involvement in facilitating early detection of children's growth and development activities. Implementing a collaborative approach ensures that children's growth and development is a shared responsibility between parents and educators. It is very important for parents to be actively involved in monitoring their child's progress, encouraging the development of four main aspects: personal-social, adaptive-fine motor, language, and gross motor skills.

Abstract (sommario):
Kata Kunci: kata pinjaman; strategi adaptasi; bahasa Bugis; teori Optimaliti; Koresponden-OO ABSTRACT As a minority community in Malaysia, the Bugis community tends to utilise lexical items from other languages, particularly from local languages as a result of the assimilation process that took place. Thus, this study was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) how are the loanword adaptation strategies used in absorbing foreign language lexical items into the Bugis language, and (2) how can these adaptation strategies be explained by using the Correspondence-OO approach developed in Optimality theory. Data were collected through field methods and interviews using questionnaire, word list and recording. The field studies were conducted in Pontian and Pasir Gudang, Johor as well as in Klang, Selangor. A total of 144 informants from three age groups, namely among the youth, adults and the elderly who were involved in answering the questionnaire and wordlist. The results revealed that eight loanword adaptation strategies were used in Bugis language, namely fusion, deletion, segment substitution, epenthesis, vowel reduction, nasal substitution, glottal stop formation and gemination. The Correspondence-OO analysis showed an element of Bugis language which is intolerant of foreign grammars by prohibiting the full absorption of borrowed foreign lexical items. This can be observed from the needs to comply with a markedness constraint *SAME LEXICAL, that dominates other constraints in the grammar of the Bugis language. The findings of the study can shed input on the language aspects of the Bugis community in Malaysia that were previously excluded. In addition, it has successfully demonstrated the capability of Correspondence-OO in explaining the issue of loanwords without denying the important concept of Optimality theory, namely Parallelism. Abstract (sommario):
Infiltration is one of the important information of the state of a land. The infiltration rate is the speed of water entering the soil per unit time and when the infiltration rate has reached its maximum, it is called the infiltration capacity. Infiltration needs to be measured to determine the groundwater content (percolation). Calculation of the infiltration rate by measurement and using the Green-Ampt model is carried out to determine the rate of infiltration that exists in a land, and build a visual basic programming language to estimate the rate of infiltration. The calculation of the infiltration rate of this measurement uses a rainfall simulator as a simulation of artificial rain. Soil samples in the rainfall simulator were taken from the Barbate Dates Plantation with a slope of 25% which was taken undisturbed and placed into the research plot. Infiltration measurements are carried out per rain event with a rainfall simulator by first calculating the water stored in the measuring cup to determine the intensity of the rain and measuring the final water level in the reservoir to determine the measurement infiltration rate. The results show that the Green-Ampt model can estimate the infiltration rate under conditions of different intensity and soil water content with different values of infiltration rate, time of ponding, runoff, and accumulation of infiltration. The different levels of accuracy of MAPE, RMSE and Bias at rates infiltration measurement using the Green-Ampt model calculation on the texture of the soil texture of sand, sandy loam, loamy sand, clay and clay with moisture content of 10%, 20%, 25%, 28.26%, and 35% which is close to the actual value for MAPE is on sandy soil texture with moisture content of 10%, 20%, 25% and 35% of 4.65, 2.66, 6.33 and 13.73 (adequate), the bias is on sandy soil texture with 10% water content of 10.17 , and RMSE is on sandy soil texture with 20% moisture content of 18.28. Bias and RMSE values 1 because the results of a Green-Ampt model have values that are far from the measurement value. Keywords: Infiltration, Green-Ampt Model, Rainfall Simulator

Abstract (sommario):
The unsought Covid-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc in Malaysia’s education system, particularly at primary levels. Due to this, schools have been commanded to close immediately by the Ministry of Education (MOE) and Malaysian primary English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers have to conduct their teaching virtually via Google Meet under the government’s policy, where all teachers are provided with a Gmail address. The use of Google Meet is not well studied not only in primary schools, but also in the local environment. Therefore, this quantitative research was embarked to look into the factors that influence the integration of Google Meet among primary ESL teachers. Participants (n=123) were selected through purposive sampling based on their teaching option (TESL optionists and non-TESL optionists), teaching ESL in primary schools (n=12) located in Pasir Gudang, Johor, Malaysia. A 5-point Likert scale survey questionnaire adapted from previous studies was used. The factors of perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use towards the use of behaviour in integrating Google Meet were testified. The main findings in descriptive statistics indicated that majority of the primary ESL teachers have shown a positive attitude towards the use of Google Meet. However, some respondents remarkably noted that school administrators should render necessary assistance. The findings of this study could provide better insights for English teachers and school authority on the measures to integrate Google Meet in the teaching and learning of English at primary schools. If Google Meet is well integrated, pupils will benefit from this platform.

Abstract (sommario):
While Bactrian and Persic languages differ in terms of knowledge based on historical, geographical, and comparative-historical linguistics, Pamir languages occupy a prominent position among Bactrian languages. Pamir languages are known to have originated in the mountainous region of Aryan land. Since then, these languages have prospered in this area and come to maintain their stronghold in Pamir and its immediate vicinity. In terms of linguistic relationship and intercourse, the gathering of all Pamir languages in a single group is one expression. It is still unclear if all the Pamir languages originated from an ancient source and then branched out into different groups or were left untouched by the Aryan languages, with each one maintaining its stability as a separate branch. Margin Stern, a specialist in Pamir languages do not consider one center of origin for Pamir languages: He says, “Finding a single phonologic system for all Pamir languages is impossible since they have similarities only in a few phonetics characters”. Despite these similarities, sometimes they are separated and stacked with other languages such as Pashtu. Here, it is noteworthy to mention that it has been a long time since Mr. Margin Stern gave this idea and as such, this is not a recent theory. During those times, fewer studies on Pamir languages were carried out, and that too with poor materials. For instance, the Yazgolyami language was almost not investigated while phonological borders among Pamir languages were not identified and the specifically voiced items were not even differentiated. The later linguists and researchers collected many items and consequently, voice borders were selected. Such profound and in-depth studies and classification assure the researchers that these languages originated from one tree and later developed into different branches. Abstract (sommario):
The article determines the place of mother tongues in the life of Pamir-speaking communities, their transformation and functioning at different stages of the migration process. It outlines features that enhance our understanding of the phenomenon of Pamir diaspora. The linguistic and cultural priorities of diasporic Pamir communities are identified in light of their linguistic ideology, and ethno-religious and cultural perspectives. To study the dynamics of language life in different contexts, data on language biographies are presented, together with an analysis of the work of grassroots activists, who, by their lingua-cultural creativity, are involved in promoting their cultural and linguistic heritage, thus demonstrating their sociolinguistic rights. Analysis of the mother tongue – an important marker of the community’s socio-cultural life – reveals that Pamir languages lie at the core of the community’s cultural heritage, its spiritual and material traditions. These languages fulfil reproductive, creative and existential-ethical functions, acting as a reference point for socio-cultural practices that stimulate the revival of local culture and support the preservation of traditional cultural values. The prospects for the functioning, development and preservation of Pamir languages in the diaspora are considered.

Abstract (sommario):
Language translation is essential to bring the world closer and plays a significant part in building a community among people of different linguistic backgrounds. Machine translation dramatically helps in removing the language barrier and allows easier communication among linguistically diverse communities. Due to the unavailability of resources, major languages of the world are accounted as low-resource languages. This leads to a challenging task of automating translation among various such languages to benefit indigenous speakers. This article investigates neural machine translation for the English–Assamese resource-poor language pair by tackling insufficient data and out-of-vocabulary problems. We have also proposed an approach of data augmentation-based NMT, which exploits synthetic parallel data and shows significantly improved translation accuracy for English-to-Assamese and Assamese-to-English translation and obtained state-of-the-art results.

Drawing up a model of the word form, a formal description of the inflectional system of the language is an urgent task of computer linguistics. Models of this type serve as the basis for the development of automatic text processing systems: morphological analyzers, spelling systems, machine translation, etc. Applied linguistics has considerable experience in the formalized description and modeling of the morphology of natural languages. This article discusses the modeling of the inflectional system of the verbal parts of the speech of the Bashkir language in paired combinations of affixes. This approach is close to the grammar of the Gleason orders and is promising when creating morphoanalyzers for languages of the agglutinative system.

This paper concerns to the strategy applied by speakers of mutual intelligibilitity languages pairs in Europe, especially in Romance language pair, Portuegese and Spanish. Initial studies found a receptive multilingulism as a great strategy to break the gap of communication within these two languages. It is found that the speakers of both Portuegese and Spanish are able to communicate and understand each other even though they do not speak each other language. It happens because those two languages resemble each other and they have a large number of cognate words which makes them recognizable. However, it is also found that Portuegese speakers can understand Spanish easier than Spaniards understand Portuegese, because Portuegese is more complicated than spanish.

The ability of the Tetun community to use two languages or bilingual will give birth to the transfer or transition of languages. In the transition or transfer of language, two very important things will emerge, namely positive and negative transfers. Negative transfers will cause interference and positive transfers will lead to integration. Integration arises from positive transfer because it benefits both languages from the donor language into the recipient language or the absorbing language. The recipient's language is Tetun and the granting language is Indonesian. The purpose of this study is to determine the forms of language integration Indonesian into Tetun in the conversation of traders and buyers in Pasar Baru Betun, Central Malaka Sub-District, Malaka District. The researcher focused on the integration of Indonesian into Tetun. This type of research is qualitative research, the technique used in collecting data is the technique of record, see and interview. Abstract This study, by making use of the descriptive and analytical methods, aims to explore the literary position of the ‘Abdullah al-Ṭayyib as a traditional poet and his language characteristics in his anthology “Banāt Ramah”. His literary position is pointed out through his interest in the Arabic poetic tradition and his commitment to it in his poems as well as the language characteristics which distinguish him in his anthology. The study concludes among others: that the poems of ‘Abdullah al-Ṭayyib are abundantly infused with aesthetical features of language, among them is the use of different symbols; some represent the nation while others represent the barren deserts. He made use of the style of the earlier Arabic traditional poets both in words and senses. His inclination to the traditional elements is rare in the time when contemporary poets mostly would turn away from it. Hence, he made use of some of the traditional openings and some phrases in the ancient traditional poems, thus earning himself a special characteristic as found in the anthology.

Abstract (sommario):
Passive sentence is a sentence subject to accept or subject to action. There are two languages which also have passive sentences, namely Javanese and Old Javanese. Before the Javanese language developed, it was known as Old Javanese. Old Javanese as one of the derivatives of Austronesian languages is a language that has very old literature. By studying the Hariñjiŋ A, B, C Inscriptions as one of the proofs of the use of Old Javanese language, the research was carried out with contrastive analysis, namely comparing it with Javanese. The problem is how do passive constructs in Old Javanese language (the case study of Hariñjiŋ A, B, CInscriptions) and Javanese when viewed using contrastive analysis? The purpose is to describe passive construction in Old Javanese (a case study on the Hariñjiŋ A, B, C Inscriptions) and Javanese inscriptions and compare the two sentence patterns. The method of this research is descriptive qualitative by using a descriptive comparative contrast method which aims to provide an overview of passive sentences and find differences. The conclusions are that the construction of passive sentences in Old Javanese (in the writing of the Hariñjiŋ A, B and C Inscriptions) has a transitive passive and intransitive passive form which is the same as Javanese. The passive form is indicated by a kiks prefix, a combination of affix-in, a combination of affixes, a combination of ma-affixes, and infix -in-. Whereas the Javanese language is only known to be a prefix, di- -ni, and di-confix, or to be deunned. It can be concluded also that passive sentence Javanese is not derived from Old Javanese but rather has an influence from Malay which is the forerunner of Indonesian. Bentuk pasifnya ditandai dengan prefiks ka-, kombinasi afiks -in- -an, kombinasi afiks -in- -akan, kombinasi afiks ma- -akĕn, dan infiks -in-.
