Abstract (sommario):

With the objective of assessing Lisbon’s environmental improvement and sustainable development, we measured the changes in Lisbon’s vegetation cover over the 2010–2020 timeframe considering three categories: public green areas (PGA), street trees (ST), and urban green infrastructure (UGI). We calculated the vegetation cover (m2), vegetation cover per resident (m2 person−1), and % of vegetation cover. PGA and ST covers were made available by the municipality, while UGI cover was estimated from the NDVI calculated from multispectral satellite images (Landsat 7–8). Since only the PGA cover decreased 2% (the ST and UGI covers increased 38% and 5%, respectively), Lisbon has lost PGA over the previous decade. The values of PGA per resident were below the minimum value of 12 m2 person−1 at the city scale and in most parishes (19 parishes out of 24 in 2020). While the values of % of UGI were above the desired value of 30% at the city scale, in 2020 there were three parishes with values below the minimum of 5%. This information is important to prioritize measures that promote sustainable urbanization in those parishes. Our study raised many questions, suggesting the need to standardize the methods for measuring the urban vegetation.

During his pastoral ministry, Father Adam Lepa was directed to four parishes. Each of them had its own pastoral specifics. In the first two of these, St Adalbert’s parish in Dobroń and the Transfiguration of the Lord parish in Łódź, he served as vicar. In the other two, St Ursula’s and the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary parishes in Łódź, he held the office of parish priest. In St Ursula’s parish he was the first parish at the pre-existing pastoral centre, and the second parish he took over as parish priest was the oldest parish in Łódź.

Abstract (sommario):

The article presents the results of new study of the St. Petersburg foreigners’ database compiled on the basis of register of Petersburg Calvinist parishes for the first half of the 18-th century. It identifies the national and social structures of Calvinist population, determines some demographic indicators (such as child mortality, national and religious parameters of kinship, the percentage of illegitimate children). The author believes that in the mid-1730s there were more than two hundred adult Calvinists of both sexes in St. Petersburg. The Calvinist population of the capital was approximately 40 % Dutch, 30 % Germans, 20 % French, and 8 % English. It was found that among the St. Petersburg Calvinists there were many people of intellectual professions, such as doctors, scientists, and teachers, who made up at least 7 % of all men in the parishes. The social composition of these parishes was not homogeneous, but it was balanced, because the main categories of city dwellers (artisans, merchants, and military personnel), judging by their minimal shares, were distributed evenly. The article suggests that interethnic and interfaith ties of the St. Petersburg Calvinists contributed to the large-scale Western European acculturation for many Russians without their traveling abroad.

Abstract Roman Catholic parishes in the United States are steadily becoming more diverse. This article examines St. Mary of the Angels, a small, urban, economically marginal, highly diverse Roman Catholic parish in Boston, as a case study in the question of how researchers might approach the tension between cultural dynamism and structural stability at the heart of multiethnic parish life. Attending to the ways in which parishioners articulated their decisions to belong to St. Mary’s, I demonstrate how their renegotiation of the relationship between parish, place, and belonging reflects broader dynamics underway in U.S. Catholicism. I propose the metaphor of the ecclesial borderland as lens through which to interpret parishes where multiple cultural subcommunities coexist and converge.

Abstract (sommario):

Previous work conducted by Kushiyama (2010) identified a relative gravity profile with an abnormal anomaly across a normal fault. The relative gravity should have decreased when crossing from the upthrown side to the downthrown side. Additional relative gravity data were collected and incorporated with the existing data to create an improved gravity anomaly map. The map shows that the gravity generally increases from the southwest to the northeast in the study area. In two areas where profiles cross the fault at nearly a perpendicular angle, the fault is clearly visible and interpretable from the gravity data. However, along Chris Road, that is not the case. This is most likely caused by an underlying salt ridge (Varvaro, 1958). The mobilization of this salt upwards through more dense strata might be the cause of the low gravity effect of the upthrown side of the fault along Chris Road.

Abstract (sommario):

This thesis studies the London parish church of St Dunstan in the East on the eve of the Reformation, from c.1450 to c.1537, starting with the recreation of the medieval church fabric, continuing with an analysis of the different branches of the parish management system, examining three kinds of parish endeavours and, finally, looking at aspects of devotion and commemoration in a London parish setting. Based upon documentary, cartographic and visual evidence, the medieval church building and the surrounding churchyards are discussed as well as the spaces within the church and the types of activities that occurred within them. In addition, a brief look at the history of the parish and church is examined. The parish church was a large corporate body dependent upon various staff members to carry out their specific duties. The roles and contributions of the rectors, curates, churchwardens, vestry members, other clergy, the parish clerks, sextons and the anchorite are studied to consider how they worked together towards carrying out administrative tasks, providing for the spiritual care and liturgy for parishioners as well as for other people who worshipped at the church. Some of the distinctive provisions at the church are examined to include, firstly, a sophisticated musical programme and its influences; secondly, a school with evidence for education and for those who taught the children; and thirdly, the church's holy day celebrations and devotions that includes the feasts of SS Dunstan and Ursula, and Easter week. Chantry and anniversary commemorative foundations, and the associated religious services, are studied separately by analysing both perpetual and fixed-term foundations and how they were practised in a London parish setting. This includes an examination of the founders, the foundation process, the roles played by the church managers, family members and livery companies.

Abstract (sommario):

AbstractAlthough often underestimated or barely quoted by historical studies, music plays a crucial role in the cultural agenda of Church institutions and missionary congregations. Among the Catholic actors, the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land was a central one connecting two of their main goals: evangelisation and education. These two tasks were strictly linked: music was a central element in the liturgies celebrated in the parishes and in the Holy Places and at the same time a pedagogical tool, taught in the schools ruled by the Friars. Music reveals also the complex process of encounter of Palestinian and Western patterns in modern Palestine. In this way the music sung and taught in the St Saviour also contributed to shape the soundscape of Jerusalem. The chapter discusses various sources related to Augustine Lama, at that time the director of the schola cantorum of St Saviour.

Abstract IN 1530 the London printer Robert Redman published a best-seller. It was A Work for Householders, or for them that have the guiding or governance of any company. Despite its unpromising title, the book went through two editions in 1530 and three more in 1531; by 1537 it had been printed eight times. A convenient little handbook of practical family religion, A Work for Householders was one of the most popular new publications of the decade. It had been written by Richard Whitford, a scholar-monk at the fashionable Bridgettine house of Syon in Middlesex. Whitford’s earlier writings had been specialist works of piety for monks and nuns, but his new book had been drafted for the household of a lay friend; this friend had seen its sales potential, and encouraged publication. Whitford was an instant success. As well as A Work for Householders, in I 530 he also published his own adaptations of short works of private devotion by St Bonaventura, Bernard Sylvester, and St Bernard, the last reprinted twice in the following year.

The article is devoted to the analysis of the marriage behaviour of Catholics in Tsarskoye Selo and Yamburg parishes of the Saint Petersburg governorate. For this purpose, the Russian-language copies of 1840–1859 parish registers, deposited in the 1822 collection (Petrograd Dean’s Office of Roman Catholic Churches) of the Central State Historical Archives of St. Petersburg were analysed. Statistical methods of processing mass sources were applied, the data were processed using Excel spreadsheets. The article examines the seasonal distribution of marriages, the average age at first marriage, peculiarities of the marriage choice of Catholics. The research findings were compared with the indicators previously obtained for the Orthodox population of Tsarskoye Selo in the 1840s.

The heritage of Sts. Cyril and Methodius is part of the cultural wealth of several nations and countries, including Slovakia. The most famous present-day regular religious and cultural events dedicated to Sts. Cyril and Methodius are held in Nitra, Terchová, Bojná, Devín, Selce, Sečovce and Stropkov. In addition, Močenok organizes festivities associated with St. Gorazd, a disciple of the Thessalonian brothers. Regular local festivities are also held in some Roman Catholic parishes dedicated to Sts. Cyril and Methodius. After 1989, one could observe an increased degree of veneration of Sts. Cyril and Methodius also in the dedication of new sacral buildings in several villages in Slovakia. Currently, there are 106 larger sacral buildings (churches and chapels) in Slovakia under Cyril and Methodius’s patronage. The profane buildings that bear the name associated with Cyril and Methodius most often include educational institutions and their buildings (University of Sts. Cyril and Methodius in Trnava, Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra and the Roman Catholic Faculty of Theology of Cyril and Methodius at Comenius University Bratislava etc.). From among the medical institutions, this category includes the Hospital of Sts. Cyril and Methodius, which is part of the largest medical facility in Slovakia – University Hospital Bratislava. The symbolism of Cyril and Methodious was also found e.g. in the coat of arms of the village of Brodské in the district of Skalica. The coat of arms of this village near Skalica portrays two dominant figures who are sometimes interpreted as two Franciscans, but also as Sts. Cyril and Methodius. The second example is the coat of arms of the village of Nová Bošáca in the district of Nové Mesto nad Váhom, which – in addition to the typical plum tree – also includes the letters C and M, symbolizing the new patronage of the Church of Sts. Cyril and Methodius. Intangible assets also include street and square names. In eight Slovak cities (Bratislava-Devín, Košice-Krásna, Nitra, Poprad, Zvolen, Hlohovec, Sečovce and Vrbové) and in the village of Slovenské Nové Mesto, there are squares named after Cyril and Methodius. Within the street names category, we have identified urbanonyms such as: Sts. Cyril and Methodius Street (11x), St. Cyril and St. Methodius Street (1x), Cyril and Methodius Street (1x), Cyrillo-Methodian Street (2x), Cyril‘s Street (2x), Constantine‘s Street (1x), Methodius‘s Street (5x), St. Cyril‘s Riverside (1x), St. Methodius‘s Riverside (1x). The establishment of the cult of Sts. Cyril and Methodius in Slovakia can be observed through the growing number of St. Cyril‘s relics also. Currently, the most important impetus for the development of a modern perception of the ever-vibrant legacy of Europe‘s patrons is the certification of the European Cultural Route of Sts. Cyril and Methodius, but also the commitment to future generations in the implementation of the key principles of the Council of Europe (human rights, cultural democracy, cultural diversity and identity, dialogue, mutual exchange and cross-border and cross-century enrichment).

Abstract (sommario):

The history of the Veronese hospitals constitutes one of the most important and interesting chapters of the urban events. St. Zeno in his sermon on the avarice, already praised the Veronese inhabitants for their great availability toward suffering and sick people, to the point that almost every monastery and parishes became a reception centre for pilgrims, distressed and sick people. Population growth implied to improve the health initiatives. The events happened in Verona at the beginning of the twentieth century are a precious proof of the contribution which doctors and wise administrators offered to the Veronese health care system. It is a history intimately related to the munificent charity thanks to which the local protagonists sustained the birth and the development of the hospital complex (bequest of Alessandri, Cressotti Zorzi, Failoni, Roveda, only for quoting some of them). The hospital administration, together with doctors and inhabitants faced with burning and active debates, the transfer of the civil hospital from its seat, situated in the thin urban fabric of the city centre, to a suburb area: Borgo Trento. Borgo Trento is the hospital which the Veronese feel like their own hospital, characterized by a system of pavilions, long tree-lined avenue and luxuriant gardens. A new hospital complex, Borgo Roma Policlinico, was born in the 1970s in the south suburb of the city, offering great town planning and charitable opportunities. The integration of the two hospitals and the constitution of the Azienda Ospedaliera Integrata Verona are most recent history (2010), but seems follow the steps of the union between the Alessandri Children’s Hospital and the Sant’Antonio Civil Hospital, as a prosecution of the troubled hospital history of fusions, transfers and divisions.
