This study examined parents’ satisfaction with the after-school child care service at elementary schools, and was to understand if parents’ satisfaction differed because of their social status, age, educational background, children’s school year, family income, occupation, household status and the ways school handling the service. According to the findings, suggestions were made as references for future educational practitioners and future research. To achieve the aims, the study was conducted through literature review, a questionnaire survey, and data collection and analysis. The literature examined for the study includes research related to after-school child care services in Taiwan and other countries. The questionnaire developed by the researcher was titled “A Study of Parents' Satisfaction about Elementary School Students’ After-school Child Care Service in Taichung County”, and the objects of the questionnaire were mainly 853 parents scattered in 40 different public elementary schools. These data were analyzed through the Chinese version of SPSS for Windows 12.0 statistical software program. Statistical analyses include standard deviation, t-test, and one-way ANOVA. Here are the conclusions from the research: 1. Parents are generally satisfied with the after-school child care service. 2. On social status, educational background, children’s school year, family income, occupation, and household status variables, parents show a significant difference in satisfaction, but there’s no significant difference on age variable. 3. There’s a significant difference in satisfaction on the school background variable-the days of the child care service, class size, finishing time and the members of the students in the class. 4. Taichung County elementary schools conduct the after-school child care service in two manners, self-management and commissioned management. The ratio is 20:1. Parents show a slightly higher satisfaction with the commissioned management, or an equal satisfaction with both. However the difference between the two is not statistically significant, which means there’s no significant difference in satisfaction. Based on these findings, the researcher proposes the following: 1. Sustain the after-school child care services and encourage the schools that haven’t provided the child care service to start it. 2. Extend the service days and hours to meet parents’ need. 3. Improve incentives to commissioned management, and encourage to bring manpower from outside of school. 4. Review the existing regulations and system, and reduce the class size appropriately. 5. Suggest the future researchers to take the disadvantaged students’ parents as studying objects to understand the factors that influence parents to give up this free service. 6. Suggest the future researchers comparing principally taking care of student life with emphasis on talent and club activity services and learning if there's any difference in satisfaction between the two. Keyword: children of parents, after school child care, after-school child care service, parents’ satisfaction

This study aimed to investigate parent satisfaction with after-school child care services for first and second grade students. The research subjects were the parents whose children were studying in the first and second grade of public elementary schools in Taichung County. Stratified purposive sampling method was adopted, and “questionnaire survey” and “semi-structured interviews” were used as the main research instruments. The survey instrument was a self-developed “Questionnaire on Parent'' Satisfaction with Child Care Services for First and Second Grade Students in Elementary Schools”, which consisted of four dimensions, including “teaching and guidance”, “environment and facilities”, “teacher arrangement”, and “charge standard”. A total of 1029 questionnaires were distributed, and 877 of them were collected. The valid response rate was 94%. These data were later analyzed using mean, standard deviation, t-test, and one-way ANOVA. Further, a total of 9 parents were selected for semi-structured interviews. Six conclusions were derived from the research findings: 1. Parents of first and second grade elementary school students were generally satisfied with after-school child care services. 2. The “overall satisfaction” of these parents with after-school child care services varied depending on school scale. 3. The “overall satisfaction” of these parents with after-school child care services did not vary by the region of the school. 4. In the aspect of “teaching and guidance”, schools which “commission an external institution to provide after-school child care” received a higher level of parent satisfaction than schools which “provide after-school child care on their own”. 5. The parent satisfaction with overall or any particular aspect of after-school child care services was not influenced by their age, gender, and education background. 6. The parent satisfaction with overall or any particular aspect of after-school child care services was influenced by their status and how they are subsidized. Finally, based on the above results, suggestions were proposed for parents whose children participate in the after-school child care services, authority concerned, and future researchers, in hope of making some contribution to the future development of after-school child care.

The main purpose of the present study is to conduct a survey in parents’ satisfactions and policy beliefs in child-care service and compare demographic background differences in their opinions. Participants were 605 parents who have infants or toddlers enrolled in nursery schools in Tainan City. Purposive sampling was employed to recruit participants. The data was analyzed by means of descriptive statistics, chi-square, ANOVA, and Scheffé post hoc comparison. The study results are as follows: 1. The majority of parents and primary caretakers are mothers, whereas, in the family childcare supporting system, maternal grandparents were shown to provide the most support when needed. 2. The majority of families are nuclear and double-income. 3. Parents think that the most influential people in their children’s lives are the teachers in their nursery schools. 4. When encountering childcare problems, parents/guardians will first ask for help from childcare teachers. 5. When searching for a childcare center, low SES nuclear families seldom ask for help from the Tainan City Government Bureau of Social Affairs or any related governmental departments. 6. In administrative approach, parents with two children are significantly more satisfied than parents with 3 or more children. 7. In the subcategory “Teacher Quality” of “Education and Care Activity,” grandparents are significantly more satisfied than mothers or fathers. 8. In the subcategory “Infant’s and Toddler’s Language” of “Infant’s and Toddler’s Development,” fathers are significantly more satisfied than mothers. 9. A significant differences was found between parent types on parental subsidies. All types of parents/guardians agree that childrearing subsidies are what is most needed. However, maternity pension is the least concern for mothers and fathers whereas having a friendly environment for raising children is the least concern for grandparents. 10. A significant differences was found between parents' ages on infant support policies. Parents/guardians under age 25 value mostly in public-care services for infants and toddlers, whereas parents/guardians between age 26-40 and over 41 think that childrearing subsidies are the most important issue. 11. A significant difference was found between parent/guardian types on nursery school location. Mothers and fathers will choose a nursery center near their house, whereas grandparents will choose one close to theirs. 12. A significant difference was found between parents' ages on nursery school location. All age group choose a nursery school close to home. For age group under 25 and between 26-40 will less prefer a location close to their grandparents’ house, whereas age group over 41 will less prefer a location close to their spouses’ workplaces. 13. A significant difference was found between family structures on nursery school location. All types of family structures like a nursery school close to home. Nuclear families least favor nursery schools close to their parents’ house, whereas single-parent families least favor nursery schools close to their spouses’ workplaces and their grandparents' house.
