Testo completoNowadays, oxide/oxide composites are most of the time developed by sintering, sol-gel process or CVI (Chemical Vapor Infiltration). These techniques include many steps of synthesis leading to a long time of synthesis and possible deteriorations of the properties of the composite. This thesis focuses on an original and rapid process developed by French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA): the film boiling chemical vapor infiltration. This technique is already used to synthesize C/C and C/SiC composites but works have never focused on oxide/oxide composites. The main goal of this thesis is to synthesize oxide/oxide composites by film boiling chemical vapor infiltration. Works were focused on alumina, silica and barium aluminosilicate matrices. Several experimental parameters were studied: temperature, time and liquid precursor. Microstructural and physicochemical characterizations were done on composites. Several modifications of the experimental setup have been made in order to allow a better reproducibility of the tests and a better thermal monitoring

Testo completoOxide/oxide CMCs are good candidates for thermostructural applications. Themechanical behaviour and damage mechanisms of two alumina/alumina composites with two andthree dimensional woven reinforcements were studied and compared. The microstructure of theseweak matrix CMCs was characterized by porosimetry and NDT methods, such as IR thermography, ultrasound scanning and X-ray tomography, which highlighted initial defects. The mechanicalbehaviour was studied through tensile tests, as well as compression tests in the case of the twodimensionalreinforced CMC. These tests were conducted at room temperature, in the fibres directionsand in the ±45° direction. In order to fully exploit these tests, several extensometry and damagemonitoring methods, such as IR thermography and acoustic emission, were used. Young’s moduli andmaximum stresses and strains of the two-dimensional reinforced CMC developed at Onera appearedto be higher than those available in the literature. The damage mechanisms of the materials weredetermined by post mortem SEM observations and in situ testing in a SEM, which made it possible toassess the nocivity of initial defects. Studying the mechanical behaviour of these composites finallyenabled the development of a three-dimensional damage model that will facilitate the furtherdevelopment of such materials, through finite element analysis. Finally, some improvements regardingthe manufacturing processes and the instrumentation for damage monitoring were suggested forfuture studies

Testo completoThis work is a contribution to the active research on new magnetic and electric properties of artificial heterostructures. Ferrimagnetic oxide / non magnetic metal / ferrimagnetic oxide systems have been deposited. In these systems, electrons are confined in the 2D metal layer and many electron reflections occur at the metal/magnetic insulator. Two different magnetisation alignments of the magnetic oxides (parallel and antiparallel) are required to obtain suitable magnetic properties, ie giant magnetoresistance (GMR). The growth control and the flatness of the different layers are needed to deposit epitaxial layers, in which electron scattering at grain boundaries is limited. Films are deposited by sputtering in a UHV chamber, structural studies have been made using mainly transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. An epitaxial growth of single Fe3O4 and CoFe2O4 films has been obtained on Al2O3(0001) with a [111] growth axis and on MgO(001) with a [001] growth axis. We have also studied magnetic properties (exchange anisotropy) of epitaxial Fe3O4(x nm)/NiO(66 nm) bilayers , x varying from 5nm to 50nm, grown along a [111] and a [001] axis. Non oxydable metal growth (Pt, Au and Ag) on (001) et (111) Fe3O4 crystals has also been investigated. We have achieved epitaxial growth of Fe3O4 / M(Au, Pt) / CoFe2O4 layers on Al2O3(0001) with flat interfaces and suitable magnetic properties. Electric investigations have shown that the electrons are confined in the metallic layer. We have measured a 1. 8% GMR ratio at 10K resulting from electron reflections at the metal/oxide interfaces with a large part of specular reflexions

Testo completoIn the aerospace and defense industry, thermostructural applications require increasingly high-performance materials, combining mechanical strength, refractoriness, and lightness. To meet these demands, all-oxide ceramic matrix composites (OCMC) are considered promising candidates. Among the matrices for these OCMCs, barium aluminosilicate (BAS) stands out due to its advantageous physical properties, particularly as a material for radomes. However, to make this material functional at high temperatures, close to its melting point (1750°C), it is essential to reinforce it with a thermochemically stable material that has an appropriate architecture. Previous theses have successfully mastered the hexagonal phase of BAS. The chemical nature of the reinforcement, which offers the desired stability with BAS, has been identified, and OCMC Al2O3/BAS composites with 1D and 2D fibrous reinforcements have been developed. However, to achieve materials with enhanced properties under severe thermostructural conditions, these OCMCs need to be produced with a "3D" reinforcement architecture. This work focuses on the development of such a composite with a complex (3D) fiber reinforcement architecture and the evaluation of its properties. To achieve this, the research involves studying the sintering of BAS-H to predict its behavior as a matrix, improving its rheological behavior in suspension to facilitate infiltration into the fibrous reinforcement preform, and implementing an impregnation process suitable for 3D reinforcements. Following these studies, the fabrication of OCMC Al2O3/BAS was completed, demonstrating promising characteristics for the intended application

Testo completoAmong all variants of photovoltaic thins films, organic solar cells generate a major industrial interest due to low manufacturing costs, reasonable levels of energy production and suitability to flexible substrates like plastic. ITO (Indium Tin Oxide) is the most used Transparent Conductive Electrode (TCE) for organic solar cells as well as other optoelectronic devices. However, this material is not without drawbacks (scarcity of indium, non-suitability to flexible substrates...), and the search for alternatives to ITO is actively pursued by the international scientific community. One possibility is offered by Oxide|Metal|Oxide multilayer structures. By reaching the thin metal layer percolation threshold and by varying its thickness, it is possible to obtain very high conductivity and transparency of this multilayer in the visible spectral range. The role of both oxide layers is to tune the position, intensity and width of the spectral transmission window by adjusting the oxides’ thicknesses. Coupled experimental and numerical works were lead in particularly on SnOx|Ag|SnOx, TiOx|Ag|TiOx and ZnS|Ag|ZnS structures. By microstructuring such electrodes, or by incorporating a Cu|Ag bilayer as metal sheet at the core of the structure, it is possible to increase the optical performances by amplifying and expanding the spectral transmission window without degrading the high conductivity. The integration of SnOx|Ag|SnOx and TiOx|Ag|TiOx electrodes in inversed organic solar cells was undertaken. Very promising photoelectric results were obtained with the TiOx|Ag|TiOx structure which allows to reach performances close to that obtained with ITO-based reference cells

Testo completoThe use of oxide/oxide ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) is being considered for new generation engines. The main obstacle to the industrialisation of these materials are the diversity of production processes, their costs, and the heterogeneity of the microstructures and mechanical properties. This thesis is a collaboration between Onera, IRT Saint-Éxupéry and ICA. It investigates a new way of producing alumina/alumina CMC by using a continuous tow impregnation process. Firstly, a study was carried out into the formulation of aqueous alumina slurries compatible with the production of composites using a continuous tow impregnation line, followed by autoclave shaping and sintering. Two hygroscopic organic plasticisers, sorbitol and glycerol, as well as a gelling agent, boehmite, were evaluated. Autoclave thermal cycles were adapted to slurries compositions, with particular regard to the organic additives. Several compositions were selected and the microstructures of the resulting CMCs were characterised. The relationships between slurry composition, process adaptability and composite microstructure were investigated. Finally, the mechanical behaviour at ambient temperature of the different CMC grades were examined in relation to their microstructures, and tensile damage scenarios were proposed

Testo completoOxide/oxide ceramic matrix composites can be used for structural applications operating continuously at temperatures between 500°C and 900°C under oxidizing environments, such as in areas close to aircraft engines. In particular, composites based on a matrix combining alumina and silica are promising. In addition, the processing of these materials comprises several steps. Two of them are essential: the impregnation of the fibrous reinforcement with the suspension and the sintering of the matrix. This PhD thesis focuses on the processing of oxide/oxide ceramic matrix composites using an alumina-silica matrix. It is derived from an aqueous suspension in which the two species are initially present as particles. The aim of this work is to study the behaviour of such a system during the various stages of the manufacturing, i.e. to establish the relationships between processing/microstructure/properties, in order to propose an optimal composition of the matrix regarding the process and the required properties. In particular, the silica proportion will be a crucial parameter. Firstly, since the quality of the impregnation step is based on the ability of the suspension to flow within the fibrous structure, a rheological characterization of the oxide suspensions has been carried out. The rheological behavior has been interpreted on the basis of the domains of predominance of the different interactions within the suspension. Also, the influence of the various suspension characteristics, such as the solid fraction and the alumina-silica ratio, has been examined. Then, the behaviour of this system during the sintering has been studied since this thermal treatment should lead to a microporosity that respects the concept of weak matrix composites. The sintering mechanisms have been identified while the influence of the various parameters on the kinetics has been qualified. Also, relationships with the mechanical properties of the matrix have been established. Finally, composites with Nextel™ 610 reinforcements and a porous alumina-silica matrix have been fabricated and characterized

Testo completoBilayers ferroelectric oxide / conductive oxide, Bi3. 25La0. 75Ti3O12 (BLT) / Sr4Ru2O9 / Si[100] were elaborated by pulsed laser deposition. Structural characterizations were done by electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction; electrical properties were measured by impedance spectroscopy and Van der Pauw’s method. It is the first time that Sr4Ru2O9 is elaborated as thin films. We have shown that Sr4Ru2O9 is a conductive oxide at high temperature and has a semiconductor behavior at low temperature. The BLT thin films have polarization out of the substrate plane. Thick films of the BLT have polarization in the plane, which corresponds to a preferential orientation (00l). An intermediate layer, based on SrTiO3, between the substrate oxide Sr4Ru2O9 and the layer of BLT, was highlighted by electron microscopy. This phase grows at the cost of the ferroelectric material

Testo completoThe present thesis aimed at investigating the relationships existing between the microstructure of alumina-carbon refractories used in steel continuous casting and their thermomechanical properties. The work realized here fall within a composite approach, by determining thermomechanical properties of the single constituents of the materials and analyzing then the properties of the heterogeneous composites. Different systems of double scale model materials, constituted of graphite and alumina aggregates in one hand, and of carbon matrix loaded with fine alumina grains on the other hand were studied here. The carbon bond of these materials resulting from pyrolysis of phenolic resin, the thermomechanical properties of the elaborated model materials were analyzed both during and after the pyrolysis heating treatment. The properties evolutions of the cured samples during the pyrolysis highlighted a slight damage during the end of heating and important damage during cooling, due to a thermal expansion mismatch between the alumina grains and the resin/carbon bond. The influence of the thermal damage has been investigated thanks to tensile tests on the pyrolyzed materials, which exhibit a rather strong non-linear behavior. Relationships between volume fraction and physical key-properties of the materials have been established. Besides, the obtained results highlighted that a small change in composition can drastically change the thermomechanical properties of these materials. This overall study on model materials allowed to develop some ideas in order to improve industrial compositions

Testo completoThis study focuses on damage and lifetimeprediction of oxide/oxide composite structures, introduced in the hot parts of aircraft engines. It ispart of a project named MECACOMP, led by Safran. This PhD aims to propose a calculation strategycapable of predicting the strength and service life ofcomposite structures subjected to real fatigue loads(multi-axial, long-lasting and potentially random).A two-step approach is implemented. First, a damagemodel, using an incremental formalism, is proposedin order to represent the experimental behaviourobserved on both static and fatigue loadings. Adedicated identification protocol is proposed. Themechanical test campaign carried out made itpossible to characterize the studied material and toidentify the parameters of the model. However, the computational costs being too highto simulate the behaviour of a composite structuresubjected to long-term fatigue loadings, acalculation strategy is developed, in a second step,to reduce drastically the computational time andmake the model usable in design offices. It consistsin a non-linear cycle jumps method, based on theproposed incremental damage law. This strategywas implemented in a commercial Finite Elementcode and applied to polycyclic fatigue calculationson both academic structures, for which the modelpredictions are evaluated by comparison with testresults, and structures of industrial complexity

Testo completoThis study deals with oxide-oxide interfaces having a large misfit. Heteroepitaxial thin layers of zirconia orientated on (1120)sa monocrystalline sapphire substrate were grown by the sol- gel process. During crystal growth, the de-wetting of the substrate leads to the formation of isolated crystal islands. Flat h00 islands display a {100}Q //{110}interface with the substrate while hhh dome-shaped islands show a {111}Q // {110} interface. H00 islands are more stable than hhh. We show that the crystal growth is mainly controlled by the normal orientation existing between thin film and substrate. In plane orientation plays a role, but only at lesser degree. High resolution electron microscopy investigation of the interfaces allows establishing crystallographic models that explain the versatile character of the in-plane orientation. These models show that considering large misfit heterophase interfaces, the iono- covalent character of the bounding plays a key role on the establishment of heteroepitaxial relationship. In particular, the flexibility of the anionic sub lattice accommodates structural mismatches between the two phases. This study reveals that the epitaxial relationship govern the martensitic like transformation arising in zirconia and could eventually control the structural type of zirconia (tetragonal, monoclinic or orthorhombic)

Testo completoResistive Random Access Memories (RRAM) have attracted significant attention recently, as it is considered as one of the most promising candidates for the next generation of non-volatile memory devices. This is due to its low power consumption, fast switching speed and the ability to become a high density memory compatible with the conventional CMOS processes. The working principle of this kind of memories is the resistive switching (RS) which is simply the controlled reversible change in the resistivity of a junction generated by an external electric field. It has been proposed that the RS is coupled with the migration of oxygen vacancies generating a reversible conduction path inside the oxide. Many experiments have been done to address the switching mechanism during the last decade without any conclusive answer of what is the physical mechanism beneath the RS. The main goal of the present work it's to understand the physical mechanism that control the RS and to point out which are the key parameters that can help improve the performance of the memory devices from a technological point of view. In this dissertation we report on the studies of the RS in different interfaces metal/oxide where we have utilized gold, silver and platinum as metal and as complex oxides: YBa2Cu3O7–δ (YBCO), La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO) y La0.7Sr0.3CoO3 (LSCO). This oxides have been chosen because all of them are strongly correlated compounds with physical properties strongly dependent of their oxygen stoichiometry. They also have a similar crystalline structure (perovskite type) and a high oxygen mobility. We realized the proof of concept for each type of junction successfully and explain the RS effect and explained the RS utilizing an electric assisted diffusion of oxygen vacancies model. We characterized them the conduction mechanism of the junctures with a conduction dominated by the Poole-Frenkel effect in the YBCO and by the SCLC mechanism in the LSCO. The feasibility of the memory devices in this junctions have been tested reaching high repeatability with optimize power consumption with more than 103 successful switching events. We have also studied the effects of accumulating cyclic electrical pulses of increasing amplitude on the non-volatile resistance state of the junctions. We have found a relation between the RS amplitude and the number of applied pulses, at a fixed amplitude and temperature. This relation remains very similar to the Basquin equation use to describe the stress-fatigue lifetime curves in mechanical tests. This points out to the similarity between the physics of the RS and the propagation of defects in materials subjected to repeated mechanical stress. This relation can be used as the basis to build an error correction scheme. Finally, we have analyzed the time evolution of the remnant resistive state in the oxide-metal interfaces. The time relaxation can be described by a stretched exponential law that is characterized by a power exponent close to 0.5. We found that the characteristic time increases with increasing temperature and applied power which means that this is not a standard thermally activated process. The results are a clear evidence of the relation between RS and the diffusion of oxygen vacancies on a two-dimensional surface with a temperature-dependent density of trapping centers, which may correspond, physically, to the diffusion along grain boundaries

Testo completoOxides surfaces are energetically heterogeneous towards adsorption. At solid/gas interface, argon or nitrogen have already been used to evidence surface heterogeneity (morphology or reactivity). In this study, protons or hydroxyls are used as surface probes of topochemical and energetic heterogeneity at solid/liquid interface. The goal was to work with raw experimental data since smoothing procedures may smear out valuable information on local heterogeneity. Highresolution potentiometric titration (up to 50 data points per pH unit) are treated as accurate H+ or OH- adsorption isotherms. The derivative form of isotherms is recomposed by using local adsorption isotherms (TitriDIS procedure (Titration Derivative Isotherm Summation)) to identify various energetic domains and also affinity distributions. Local isotherms are basically derived from 1-pK charging equation, which can be written as a Langmuir-Ternkin isotherm. Bach domain is described by a specifie local dissociation/complexation equilibrium, characterized by one pK, a pK distribution and/or an effect of surrounding sites. Energetic domains show various reactivity of various surface sites and evidence the proton affinity distribution of the surface. In this work, three synthetic ( oxy-hydr)oxides, among the most studied in literature, were used: anatase, goethite and amorphous silica. Electrophoretic mobility, adsorption edges and surface charge have been measured, without or with metallic cations (Cu2+, Cd2+ and Pb2+). A set of different pKs (which represents the affinity for the cation) was determined for the three samples (quasicontinuous distribution for silica, 2 main domains for anatase, and 4 kinds of reactives sites for goethite ). The energetic distributions reveal the various effects of crystallographic faces, defects, impurities, or dissolution. Such an analytical procedure represent an exciting tool to map (nature, localization and density) smface active sites of importance in interfacial phenomena

Testo completoThis thesis deals with the development of heterogeneous catalysts for the direct conversion of ethanol into ethylene oxide. Various catalysts were prepared using different techniques including impregnation and co-precipitation methods. These catalysts were characterized in order to determine their structural, textural and chemical properties as well as their elemental compositions using XRD, XPS, XRF, SEM, TEM and TPR. The performance of the catalysts in the direct conversion of ethanol to ethylene oxide was determined in a vapor phase down-flow fixed-bed reactor at atmospheric pressure. Furthermore, the impact of reaction conditions (temperature, GHSV, ethanol/oxygen ratio) was studied. Thus, it was notably found that the reaction conditions significantly affected the catalytic performance, which was ascribed to the fine-tuning of the redox cycle enabling the stabilization of the catalysts oxidation state. Finally the mechanistic aspects of the reaction were studied notably with the focus to identify the reaction pathways and the intermediates
