Abstract (sommario):
The Oxford Textbook of Neuro-Oncology examines the epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical features, and management of adult and childhood central nervous system (CNS) tumours. The book is organized according to the World Health Organization (WHO) classification of CNS tumours and includes an introductory chapter discussing the new, revised WHO classification that will be used in future editions of this textbook. The book reviews primary CNS tumours, metastatic CNS tumours, and familial tumour syndromes. Each chapter is organized according to a uniform framework, addressing epidemiology, aetiology, pathogenesis, clinical presentation, imaging, and treatment, with a focus on different treatment modalities and specific consideration of paediatric aspects, where applicable. Each chapter is authored by a multidisciplinary, international group of senior specialists representing the United States, Canada, Europe, and the Asia/Pacific region. It is written for generalists and specialists managing these various conditions. It provides an outlook on how current developments in molecular diagnostics, which have in part been integrated into the new WHO classification, may shape clinical decision-making in the future.

Abstract (sommario):
Widely recognised as the standard text for trainee psychiatrists, the Shorter Oxford Textbook of Psychiatry stands head and shoulders above the competition. Honed over five editions it displays a rare fluency, authority and insight, and it makes the process of assimilating information as smooth and enjoyable as possible. The resource provides an introduction to all the clinical topics required by the trainee psychiatrist, including all the sub-specialties and major psychiatric conditions. Throughout, the authors emphasize the basic clinical skills required for the full assessment and understanding of the patient. Discussion of treatment includes not only scientific evidence, but also practical problems in the management of patients their family and social context. It emphasizes an evidence-based approach to practice and gives full attention to ethical and legal issues. Introductory chapters focus on recognition of signs and symptoms, classification and diagnosis, psychiatric assessment, and aetiology. Further chapters deal with all the major psychiatric syndromes as well as providing detailed coverage of pharmacological and psychological treatments. It also gives equal prominence to ICD and DSM classification - often with direct comparisons.

Abstract (sommario):
On the cusp of the newest edition of the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), the field of personality disorders is thriving and productive. This is certainly a time of major transition for the classification, study, and treatment of personality disorders, as the personality disorders section of the DSM is undergoing major revision, leaving researchers and clinicians to wonder whether their area of specialty in the field of personality disorders will be retained, deleted, or revised in DSM-5. In advance of DSM-5, The Oxford Handbook of Personality Disorders provides a summary of the latest information concerning the diagnosis, assessment, construct validity, etiology, pathology, and treatment of personality disorders. The text looks at personality disorders proposed for retention in DSM-5. It also investigates personality disorders that are slated for deletion. The book further examines issues concerning three disorders that have never obtained or had previously lost official recognition (i.e., passive-aggressive, depressive, and racist). The book also includes articles authored by members of the DSM-5 Personality Disorders Work Group, which succinctly outline and explain the proposals, as well as articles by authors who raise significant questions and concerns (often differing) about these proposals. The text includes special coverage of largely neglected areas of investigation (i.e. childhood antecedents of personality disorder, cross-cultural validity). The book finally looks into controversial areas for the DSM, such as schizotypal personality disorder, narcissism, depressive personality disorder, dependent personality disorder, and dimensional classification.

Abstract (sommario):
This book provides an up-to-date, authoritative, and highly readable overview of psychiatry, suitable for all psychiatrists, as well as medical students, general practitioners, and other mental health professionals. Written by experienced clinicians, the new edition has been substantially rewritten and updated. The first three chapters cover the symptoms and signs of psychiatric disorders, psychiatric classification (including DSM-5), and how to conduct a psychiatric assessment. Chapters on ethics and the law (including the Mental Health Act), aetiology, and evidence-based approaches, set the scene for description of the major syndromes of adult psychiatry. In each chapter, description of the cardinal clinical features is accompanied by the latest evidence on epidemiology, aetiology, treatment, and outcome. Subsequent chapters cover child psychiatry, the psychiatry of old age, intellectual disability, forensic psychiatry, substance misuse, suicide, and self-harm, and psychiatry in medical settings. After a new chapter on global mental health, two chapters cover psychological and psychopharmacological treatments: their indications, efficacy, side effects, and mechanisms. The final chapter describes how psychiatric services are organized.

Abstract (sommario):
This new edition of the Oxford Handbook has been developed for anyone interested in the hand—surgeon, therapist, nurse, rheumatologist, general practitioner, and emergency practitioner. This reflects the broad nature of the speciality in a multidisciplinary world where surgery is by no means the only approach. There are many contributing authors who are all experts and who have thoroughly prepared each chapter. So the book is as fresh and up-to-date and authoritative as possible. The authors have all prepared the book free of charge—except for a complimentary copy of the book. The editors will donate all royalties to charity. We hope to give something back to the speciality that has brought us so much professional satisfaction. The format of the book—carefully organized headings and bullet lists and tables—should help the reader to take an overview of any topic as both a primer and as a revision aid, as well as to delve deeper to find the details of a complex classification. The small size of the book—readily accessible in a pocket or briefcase or bag or desk drawer—makes this rarely used and always forgotten knowledge easy to access.

Abstract (sommario):
Marriage and other long-term committed relationships are an integral part of our lives and confer many benefits. Unfortunately, many couples experience significant relationship distress and about half of marriages end in divorce. Among those who stay married, a notable number of couples remain in stably, severely distressed marriages for years or even decades. Given the serious physical and psychological consequences of relationship distress and divorce for spouses and their children, it is clear that relationship science––the basic and applied study of relationship development, maintenance, and dysfunction––is of critical importance. The Oxford Handbook of Relationship Science and Couple Interventionsshowcases cutting-edge research in relationship science, including couple functioning, relationship education, and couple therapy. The book begins with the most current definitions of and classifications for relationship dysfunction, which are reflected in the most recent versions of theDiagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder (DSM-5)and theInternational Classification of Diagnoses (ICD-11). Next, the latest research on the biological, psychological, and interpersonal causes and correlates of couple dysfunction and subsequent treatment implications is presented. The latest findings regarding empirically supported prevention and treatment interventions for couple dysfunction are then presented, and diversity and cultural issues are discussed in the context of working with couples. The information contained in this handbook will benefit researchers who seek to understand relationship distress and design interventions to prevent and treat couple distress, and clinicians who are diagnosing, assessing, and treating couple dysfunction in their practices.

Abstract (sommario):
The Oxford Textbook of Sjögren’s Syndrome is an authoritative textbook, rich with valuable illustrations and figures, providing a practical guide to diagnosing and managing all aspects of this condition. Sjögren’s syndrome is a chronic, immune-mediated condition typically presenting in women in their fifth or sixth decade. With increased awareness and improvement in diagnostic tests, younger women and occasionally men are now being diagnosed with this condition. Frequently, Sjögren’s syndrome occurs in association with other autoimmune diseases, usually rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, or scleroderma. The hallmark of this condition is dryness of the eyes and mouth, but many patients have systemic effects that can be debilitating, including fatigue, peripheral neuropathy, and lung damage. It has potentially serious long-term complications, including a higher risk of developing lymphoma and foetal congenital heart block. Diagnosis of the condition can be challenging as the presenting symptoms are variable. Management of the condition can be complex as the course of the disease is unpredictable and the available therapy is mainly symptomatic, with no known cure as yet. Experts in the condition from around the world have contributed to this book to provide the most up-to-date information on pathophysiology, classification criteria, diagnostic tests, systemic manifestations of the disease, and emerging therapeutic options. The publication of this book coincides with a period of increased interest in Sjögren’s within the scientific, medical, and pharmacological worlds.

Abstract (sommario):
The Oxford Handbook of Eating Disorders reviews current research and clinical developments through synthetic articles written by experts from various fields of study and clinical backgrounds. Epidemiologic studies suggest that eating disorders are not only common but have increased in prevalence in recent decades, and this book refines and updates the state of research. The book is divided into four sections: phenomenology and epidemiology of the eating disorders, approaches to understanding the disorders, assessment and comorbidities of the disorders, and prevention and treatment. The first section deals with classification and epidemiology of the disorders, considerations for revisions to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, and the somewhat neglected topic of eating disorders in childhood and early adolescence. The second section describes research basic to understanding the eating disorders and addresses biological factors, psychosocial risk factors, cultural factors, and the effects of behaviors such as dieting and eating and weight concerns in the genesis of the eating disorders. The third section describes assessment of the eating disorders, medical and psychological comorbidities, and medical management. The final section deals with various treatment modalities that have been found successful, including psychotherapeutic and psychopharmacologic approaches; an overview of evidence-based treatment for the eating disorders; and a consideration of what we know about cost-effectiveness of existing treatments.

Abstract (sommario):
The experience of traumatic events is a near-universal, albeit unfortunate, part of the human experience. Given how many individuals are exposed to trauma, it is interesting to question why some individuals are resilient in the face of trauma while others go on to develop chronic post-traumatic stress. Throughout the relatively brief history of the psychological study of trauma, a number of themes have consistently emerged. Many of these themes remain essential elements within the current study of traumatic stress disorders, as summarized within this volume, which addresses the current landscape of research and clinical knowledge surrounding traumatic stress disorders. Bringing together a group of experts, the volume is divided into six sections, together summarizing the current state of knowledge about: classification and phenomenology; epidemiology and special populations; contributions from theory; assessment; prevention and early intervention efforts; and treatment of individuals with post-trauma mental health symptoms. Throughout the volume, attention is paid to identifying current controversies in the literature and highlighting directions that hold promise for future work.

Abstract (sommario):
This handbook presents the state-of-the-art of the statistics dealing with functional data analysis. With contributions from international experts in the field, it discusses a wide range of the most important statistical topics (classification, inference, factor-based analysis, regression modeling, resampling methods, time series, random processes) while also taking into account practical, methodological, and theoretical aspects of the problems. The book is organised into three sections. Part I deals with regression modeling and covers various statistical methods for functional data such as linear/nonparametric functional regression, varying coefficient models, and linear/nonparametric functional processes (i.e. functional time series). Part II considers related benchmark methods/tools for functional data analysis, including curve registration methods for preprocessing functional data, functional principal component analysis, and resampling/bootstrap methods. Finally, Part III examines some of the fundamental mathematical aspects of the infinite-dimensional setting, with a focus on the stochastic background and operatorial statistics: vector-valued function integration, spectral and random measures linked to stationary processes, operator geometry, vector integration and stochastic integration in Banach spaces, and operatorial statistics linked to quantum statistics.

Abstract (sommario):
This book provides a comprehensive account of the Transeurasian languages, and is the first major reference work in the field since 1965. The term ‘Transeurasian’ refers to a large group of geographically adjacent languages that includes five uncontroversial linguistic families: Japonic, Koreanic, Tungusic, Mongolic, and Turkic. The historical connection between these languages, however, constitutes one of the most debated issues in historical comparative linguistics. In the present book, a team of leading international scholars in the field take a balanced approach to this controversy, integrating different theoretical frameworks, combining both functional and formal linguistics, and showing that genealogical and areal approaches are in fact compatible with each other. The volume is divided into five parts. Part I deals with the historical sources and periodization of the Transeurasian languages and their classification and typology. In Part II, chapters provide individual structural overviews of the Transeurasian languages and the linguistic subgroups that they belong to, while Part III explores Transeurasian phonology, morphology, syntax, lexis, and semantics from a comparative perspective. Part IV offers a range of areal and genealogical explanations for the correlations observed in the preceding parts. Finally, Part V combines archaeological, genetic, and anthropological perspectives on the identity of speakers of Transeurasian languages. The Oxford Guide to the Transeurasian Languages will be an indispensable resource for specialists in Japonic, Koreanic, Tungusic, Mongolic, and Turkic languages and for anyone with an interest in Transeurasian and comparative linguistics more broadly.

Abstract (sommario):
International humanitarian law is the law that governs the conduct of participants during armed conflict. This branch of law aims to regulate the means and methods of warfare as well as to provide protections to those who do not, or who no longer, take part in the hostilities. It is one of the oldest branches of international law and one of enduring relevance today. This book provides an authoritative and practical overview of this important area of law. The book covers the foundations of international humanitarian law, including its sources, scope of application, and provides an overview of the classification of conflicts and domains of warfare. Chapters then deal with traditional issues that arise in the application of this body of law, such as the basic principles of the conduct of hostilities, the fundamental guarantees provided by this body of law, as well the law relating to weapons, detention, and specifically protected persons. The book also considers the implementation of this body of law, including through criminal prosecution for war crimes. Finally, it addresses the relationship between international humanitarian law and modern challenges relating to protection of the environment, human rights, and terrorism. The book targets professionals, as well as advanced students, with information and analysis of sufficient depth to enable them to perform their tasks with understanding and confidence. It also serves as a first port of call, a one stop shop, and a regular reference work for those interested in international humanitarian law.

Abstract (sommario):
No American author of the early 19th century enjoys a larger international audience than Edgar Allan Poe. Widely translated, read, and studied, he occupies an iconic place in global culture. Such acclaim would have gratified Poe, who deliberately wrote for “the world at large” and mocked the provincialism of strictly nationalistic themes. Partly for this reason, early literary historians cast Poe as an outsider, regarding his dark fantasies as extraneous to American life and experience. Only in the 20th century did Poe finally gain a prominent place in the national canon. Changing critical approaches have deepened our understanding of Poe’s complexity and revealed an author who defies easy classification. New models of interpretation have excited fresh debates about his essential genius, his subversive imagination, his cultural insight, and his ultimate impact, urging an expansive reconsideration of his literary achievement. Edited by leading experts J. Gerald Kennedy and Scott Peeples, this volume presents a sweeping reexamination of Poe’s work. Forty-five distinguished scholars address Poe’s troubled life and checkered career as a “magazinist,” his poetry and prose, and his reviews, essays, opinions, and marginalia. The chapters provide fresh insights into Poe’s lasting impact on subsequent literature, music, art, comics, and film and illuminate his radical conception of the universe, science, and the human mind. Wide-ranging and thought-provoking, this Handbook reveals a thoroughly modern Poe, whose timeless fables of peril and loss will continue to attract new generations of readers and scholars.

Abstract (sommario):
This work presents current approaches and new avenues of enquiry into ancient sport and spectacle. It discusses historical perspectives, contest forms, contest-related texts, civic and social aspects, and use and meaning of the individual body. Greek and Roman topics are interwoven under each heading to simulate contest-like tensions and complementarities, juxtaposing, for example, violence in Greek athletics and in Roman gladiatorial events, Greek and Roman chariot events, architectural frameworks for contests and games in the two cultures, and contrasting views of religion, bodily regimens, and judicial classification related to both cultures. It examines the social contexts of games, namely the evolution of sport and spectacle diachronically and geographically across cultural and political boundaries, and how games are adapted to multiple contexts and multiple purposes, reinforcing, for example, social hierarchies, performing shared values, and playing out deep cultural tensions. The work also pays some attention to other directing forces in the ancient Mediterranean (e.g. Bronze Age Egypt and the Near East; Etruria; and early Christianity). The volume addresses important themes common to antiquity and modern society, such as issues of class, gender, health, and the popular culture of the modern Olympics, and gladiators in cinema. It presents contests and spectacles as venues of connection and as opportunities for the negotiation of status and the exchange of value, broadly for example how early panhellenic sanctuaries responded to economic stakeholders, and how groups and individuals in the later Roman empire forged social and political links through the circus events.

Abstract (sommario):
This article focuses on the extraordinary space in between the opposites based on a paradigm in cultural sociology that conceives of ambivalence and inbetweenness as a fundamental and indissoluble given of classification and interpretation. More specifically, it considers something that transcends the sucessful ordering and splitting of the world into neat binaries, arguing that this inbetweenness is essential for the construction of culture. Reality does not provide any firm ground for neat classification. Therefore, in applying classifications to raw reality, there will always be an unclassifiable remainder. Furthermore, in specifying meaning, there is no way to achieve absolute clarity and to avoid a rest of fuzziness. This article first provides an overview of some theoretical concepts that point to the essence of inbetweenness before discussing various phenomena of inbetweenness such as garbage and monsters, heroes and victims, and seduction.

Abstract (sommario):
This article reviews the literature concerning supervised and unsupervised classification of functional data. It first explains the meaning of unsupervised classification vs. supervised classification before discussing the supervised classification problem in the infinite-dimensional case, showing that its formal statement generally coincides with that of discriminant analysis in the classical multivariate case. It then considers the optimal classifier and plug-in rules, empirical risk and empirical minimization rules, linear discrimination rules, the k nearest neighbor (k-NN) method, and kernel rules. It also describes classification based on partial least squares, classification based on reproducing kernels, and depth-based classification. Finally, it examines unsupervised classification methods, focusing on K-means for functional data, K-means for data in a Hilbert space, and impartial trimmed K-means for functional data. Some practical issues, in particular real-data examples and simulations, are reviewed and some selected proofs are given.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this chapter is to elucidate the key issues regarding the classification of eating disorders. To this end, a review of nosological research in the area of eating disorders is presented, with a particular focus on empirically based techniques such as taxometric analysis, latent class analysis, and factor mixture modeling. This is followed by a section outlining areas of overlap between the current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders–Fifth Edition (DSM-5) eating disorder categories and their symptoms. Next, eating disorder classification models that are alternatives to the DSM-5 are described and critically examined in light of available empirical data. Finally, areas of controversy and considerations for change in next version of the DSM (i.e., the applicability of DSM criteria to minority groups, children, and males; the question of whether clinical categories should be differentiated from research categories) are discussed.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter deals with the classification and diagnosis of psychopathology in children and adolescents. An overview is given of the most prevalent mental health problems in youth that can be classified according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). Methods are then described that can be employed to classify psychopathology in youth in terms of DSM nomenclature. Next, the pros and cons of the DSM classification system are discussed, after which a number of alternative ways that can be employed to classify psychopathology are addressed. These include the Research Domain Criteria framework and the complex network approach.

Abstract (sommario):
The Oxford Handbook of Clinical Specialties covers each of the 14 core medical specialties encountered through medical school and Foundation Programme rotations. Packed full of high-quality illustrations, boxes, tables, and classifications, it is ideal for use at the direct point of care, whether on the ward or in the community, and for study and revision. Each chapter is easy to read and filled with digestible information, with features including ribbons to mark your most-used pages and mnemonics to help you memorize and retain key facts, while quotes from patients help the reader understand each problem better, enhancing the doctor/patient relationship. With reassuring and friendly advice throughout, this is the ultimate guide for every medical student and junior doctor for each clinical placement, and as a revision tool. This new edition has been reordered to follow a logical progression through the specialties, starting with an examination of the subjects of obstetrics, gynaecology, and paediatrics before moving on to ophthalmology, ear, nose, and throat (ENT), and dermatology. Orthopaedics and trauma are explored, leading through to emergency medicine, pre-hospital emergency medicine, and anaesthesia. Psychiatry and general practice are discussed before moving on to eponymous syndromes, and the book is rounded off by a new final chapter on doctors’ health and performance. Key references are flagged throughout, and included in a separate online resource.

Abstract (sommario):
Values are action-guiding dispositions that are subject to praise or blame, and as such are fundamental in making choices and taking action in any human context, including clinical practice and research. The first half of the chapter reviews the contemporary role of philosophical value theory in understanding the clinical process of diagnosis and the development of formal classifications of psychopathology. The second half of the chapter discusses the kinds of values evident in these areas and raises unanswered questions for the field. Despite two decades of progress in understanding the key role of values in clinical and classificatory work, the open disclosure and negotiation of values in psychiatry remains a novel idea for many, and psychiatric and philosophical research into the area of values and diagnosis/classification is only in its infancy.

Abstract (sommario):
M. Fabius Quintilianus was a prominent orator, declaimer, and teacher of eloquence in the first century ce. After his retirement he wrote the Institutio oratoria, a unique treatise in Antiquity because it is a handbook of rhetoric and an educational treatise in one. Quintilian’s fame and influence are not only based on the Institutio, but also on the two collections of Declamations which were attributed to him in late Antiquity. The Oxford Handbook of Quintilian aims to present Quintilian’s Institutio as a key treatise in the history of Graeco-Roman rhetoric and its influence on the theory and practice of rhetoric and education, from late Antiquity until the present day. It contains chapters on Quintilian’s educational programme, his concepts and classifications of rhetoric, his discussion of the five canons of rhetoric, his style, his views on literary criticism, declamation, and the relationship between rhetoric and law, and the importance of the visual and performing arts in his work. His huge legacy is presented in successive chapters devoted to Quintilian in late Antiquity, the Middle Ages, the Italian Renaissance, Northern Europe during the Renaissance, Europe from the Eighteenth to the Twentieth Century, and the United States of America. There are also chapters devoted to the biographical tradition, the history of printed editions, and modern assessments of Quintilian. The twenty-one authors of the chapters represent a wide range of expertise and scholarly traditions and thus offer a unique mixture of current approaches to Quintilian from a multidisciplinary perspective.

Abstract (sommario):
The common usage of “race” and “religion” in popular discourse makes overlooking the complicated histories of both terms easy to do. As a corrective to this simple oversight, this chapter examines the scholarly transitions that began to reintroduce race and religion as modern classifications rather than as universal phenomena that transcend specific societal contexts. Both terms underwent massive overhauls as recently as the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, at the height of European imperial projects. Even more recently were the mid-twentieth century transitions that saw Religious Studies and Black Studies formalized as academic fields grounded in social scientific approaches to identity. Poststructuralism paved the way for analyses that deviated from the essentialist logics of theology and biological determinism, respectively. The scholarly discourse on “slave religion” is one productive site for thinking about race and religion as organizing and legitimizing tools of classification.

Abstract (sommario):
This article presents a unifying classification for functional regression modeling, and more specifically for modeling the link between two variables X and Y, when the explanatory variable (X) is of a functional nature. It first provides a background on the proposed classification of regression models, focusing on the regression problem and defining parametric, semiparametric, and nonparametric models, and explains how semiparametric modeling can be interpreted in terms of dimension reduction. It then gives four examples of functional regression models, namely: functional linear regression model, additive functional regression model, smooth nonparametric functional model, and single functional index model. It also considers a number of new models, directly adapted to functional variables from the existing standard multivariate literature.
