Testo completoNatural ventilation is a passive solution to refresh and cool down the buildings whose performance is often limited by acoustic and visual constraints. This thesis aims to improve the design of glazed windows to integrate these multiple constraints. Thermo-aeraulic, acoustic and lighting models are integrated in a platform of building energy simulation to evaluate the performance of natural ventilation in office and residential buildings according to global comfort and energy consumption. The thesis contributes in particular to the development and the validation of thermo-aeraulic models from experiments and numeric simulations. A new technique of air change rate measurement by tracer gas is developed in laboratory conditions and then applied in an in-situ experimental campaign to characterize the airflow in cross and single-sided ventilation. The numeric simulations are conducted to analyze the deviation observed between the measures and correlations. With the help of CFD tool, the specific opening geometries of this case study (loggia, different window sizes) under different wind conditions allow to identify the application range of the correlations. Finally, building energy simulation integrating the developed models comparing different control modes are carried out for two case studies: office and residential buildings. Significant reductions of cooling potential are observed in a noisy environment. To provide a response to the constraints of external noise, prototypes of acoustic shutters are designed to ensure a good compromise between thermal and acoustic comfort. Indicators applicable to the design of glazed openings based on climatic parameters are also proposed

Testo completoThe building must adapt to face future climatic conditions, particularly more frequent, longer, and more intense heatwaves. To ensure the thermal comfort of occupants, natural cooling through window opening constitutes a bioclimatic solution that is carbon-free and energy-free. However, its potential to reduce the need for air conditioning depends on the value of the outdoor air change rate. A reliable estimation of this air change rate could promote the consideration of the benefits provided by natural cooling for new construction, for renovation, or for smart control of openings. The objective of this doctoral research is to develop an in-situ diagnostic method for the air change rate through window opening, in occupied buildings, based on non-intrusive instrumentation. To this end, we implement the tracer gas method, based on the metabolic CO2 production by the occupant. A statistical resolution approach, involving a Kalman filter, has been recently introduced in the literature. We investigate the potential and limitations of such a method through the execution of an experimental campaign in a test residential building. In parallel, we develop a building energy simulation model of the case study, providing a digital test bench for the development of statistical models. A new statistical model formulation is proposed and tested. Finally, once the diagnostics for different window configurations are completed, we calibrate a predictive model of the air change rate, proposing an original approach to account for the impact of wind direction

Testo completoNatural ventilation can contribute to the reduction of the air conditioning demand and to the improvement of thermal comfort in office buildings. In this thesis, a simple configuration of natural ventilation, namely single-sided ventilation, is studied experimentally and by simulation. The main phenomena contributing to air change, thermal effect and wind effect, are discussed. Thus, the validity and applicability of existing models to calculate the ventilation rate is evaluated, by comparing their results with those of experiments conducted in a room with a single opening. Thus, CFD results are compared with experimental ones in order to validate the use of CFD for the study of single-sided ventilation. Guidance on the performance of different types of turbulence models is provided. Results from a turbulence model, namely RANS RSM, are used to establish a new correlation for calculating the ventilation rate. This new correlation shows better performance than previously existing correlations, in particular in the case of leeward opening. Finally, this new correlation is coupled to a dynamic thermal model to evaluate the cooling potential of single-sided natural ventilation in new low-energy office buildings. In particular, we study the reduction of cooling requirements in air-conditioned buildings and the number of hours of discomfort without any air conditioning system. The influence of several parameters is considered: climate, orientation, thermal inertia, rate of glazed area, internal gains and ventilation strategy (daily, night and both daily and night ventilation). Simulations show a significant reduction of cooling demand, between 30 and 90%. Moreover, it is possible to achieve thermal comfort throughout the whole year without using air conditioning in offices, provided that high thermal inertia is used and internal and solar gains are reduced
