Résumé L' équilibre financier des régimes de retraite, lorsqu'une population vieillit ou qu'une profession décline, a été une préoccupation constante dans les travaux de Jean Bourgeois- Pichat. Il y avait déjà un article sur le sujet dans Population en 1950 et une étude spécifique du corps médical en 1953. Le mariage avec la théorie des populations stables a donné une orientation originale aux travaux des Nations Unies sur ce point, et Jean Bourgeois-Pichat n'y était pas étranger. On en retrouve des traces sous sa signature dans divers travaux, mais surtout dans deux articles sur le financement des retraites par capitalisation. Un prolongement vers un système mixte répartition-capitalisation est esquissé ici et sera précisé dans Nuevas fronteras de la demografia.

Résumé Cet article décrit la vie professionnelle de l’adulte sexagénaire, selon son appartenance sociale. On a interviewé 65 sujets de 63 à 67 ans de la région administrative 03 du Québec, choisis au hasard et répartis a priori selon les variables suivantes : classe socio-économique, sexe et secteur de travail. Les résultats révèlent que l’adulte de 63 à 67 ans est aux prises avec son entrée toute prochaine dans la période de la retraite. Selon le cas, cette étape est vécue comme une orientation vers une destinée surtout collective (classe moyenne), universelle (classe défavorisée) ou individuelle (classe aisée).

Abstract Background and Objectives Aging women are continuously underrepresented in performing arts. An exception to this trend in Québec is Fabien Cloutier’s latest play Bonne retraite, Jocelyne (2018), whose protagonist is a middle-aged woman who has decided to take early retirement. This article aims at examining the interplay between the protagonist’s voluntary early retirement, gender, social class, and family relationships. Research Design and Methods This article mobilizes the theoretical framework of aging studies, which is underdeveloped in the French academic sphere. This qualitative case study connects gender issues and performative strategies in order to study a complex phenomenon within its context. Results We showed that Cloutier provides new representations of middle-aged women in his play, a corrective to the under-representation of such an age group of actors and actresses in Québec. Our results cast a new light on the combination of class privilege, gender, and ageism, as a most fruitful research orientation to be further developed in the future in order to pursue an in-depth analysis of early retirement. Discussion and Implications The play reveals that belonging to the upper-middle class is essential in order to be able, economically speaking, to retire early. Cloutier empowers Jocelyne both as an aging individual and as a woman by means of granting her the right to make her own decisions in life.

Dans le texte qui suit, nous rappelons brièvement les caractéristiques de la situation des retraités au Québec et la compréhension socio-politique que nous en avons. Sur ces bases, nous présentons la perspective d’intervention que nous privilégions dans le champ de la retraite. Nous décrivons ensuite les orientations générales du programme, ses objectifs, une synthèse de ses contenus par thèmes et les aspects qui nous paraissent significatifs relativement à l’implantation et au développement de programmes en milieux institutionnels.

Les services de réadaptation post-réanimation à orientation respiratoire sont des structures de soins offrant un nouveau modèle de prise en charge spécialisée pour les patients présentant un sevrage ventilatoire prolongé et/ou une défaillance critique persistante à l’issu d’un séjour prolongé en réanimation. La principale défaillance chronique persistante est la dépendance ventilatoire prolongée à laquelle s’associe généralement une constellation « syndromique » de modifications physiologiques, conséquences du séjour en réanimation, comme la dénutrition, la neuromyopathie (locomotion, déglutition), le delirium, les lésions cutanées et un état d’immunodépression. Au-delà de l’activité spécifique de sevrage ventilatoire et du retrait de la canule de trachéotomie, les missions de soins au SRPR sont complexes et multidisciplinaires impliquant une prise en charge nutritionnelle, une réhabilitation motrice, la gestion des comorbidités (décompensation), le soulagement des symptômes, une prise en charge psychologiques, et la planification du projet de soin en concertation avec le patient et son entourage. Cette mise au point aborde le concept de défaillance critique persistante post-réanimation et des enjeux de santé publique qu’il représente, retrace l’historique du développement des SRPR à orientation respiratoire ainsi que leurs principaux éléments structurels et de fonctionnement, pour enfin développer les grands axes de prise en charge thérapeutique.

Historiquement, le secteur bancaire suisse a externalisé le vieillissement au travail, principalement par le biais de mesures de retraite anticipée pour les cadres (hommes), de réduction du temps de travail en fin de carrière ou de plans sociaux ciblant les employé·es les plus âgé·es. Après le départ d’une partie disproportionnée des plus de 50 ans au cours des années 2000, il y a quelques signes d’un engagement récent des banques suisses en faveur du « vieillissement actif », c’est-à-dire le maintien en emploi des salarié·es âgé·es. Cet article examine ce changement d’orientation. À partir d’entretiens menés avec des travailleurs et travailleuses âgé·es (50+), des managers et responsables RH, ainsi que de l’analyse des rapports officiels, nous explorons les politiques de gestion de l’âge adoptées dans deux grandes banques suisses. L’analyse permet de montrer que le discours officiel en faveur d’une prolongation de la vie active s’adosse à une vision négative du vieillissement au travail, qui est associé à l’obsolescence des compétences et aux difficultés d’adaptation au changement, organisationnel ou technologique. Logiquement, les travailleurs et travailleuses âgé·es sont sceptiques quant à la sincérité de ce changement de politique et prennent leurs distances à l’égard de ces initiatives. Nous montrons que l’évacuation historique des travailleurs et travailleuses âgé·es du secteur bancaire helvète a laissé des traces profondes dans les esprits. Dans ce contexte spécifique, l’adoption de politiques de « gestion de l’âge » tend à être perçue comme une nouvelle forme de discrimination à l’égard des seniors.

La récente réforme du Welfare aux États-Unis reflète les principales caractéristiques du conservatisme politique dominant aux Etats-Unis : retrait définitif de l’autorité du gouvernement fédéral du domaine du Welfare, affirmation de la responsabilité individuelle, approche morale et tutélaire de la pauvreté, suppression des droits sociaux, menace de retrait de leur citoyenneté pour les bénéficiaires du Welfare. Ces orientations sont l’expression de l’influence de l’hégémonie du marché sur la politique sociale.

The advent of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) has dramatically changed the outlook for patients with cardiovascular disease. However, room for improvement and advancement remains in the safety, speed, and efficiency of manually guided PCI. In recent years, the CorPath robotic platform (Corindus Inc., Waltham, MA) has been approved to aid the interventionalist during PCI and other endovascular interventions. Favorable results in several clinical studies suggest that robotic-assisted PCI may further improve patient outcomes while also benefiting the interventionalist through reduced orthopedic strain and less exposure to ionizing radiation. In this report, we communicate our experience with the first-in-human use of a new, optional automation feature that has been added to the platform’s guidance software. This “Rotate-on-Retract” feature is designed to facilitate faster and more precise maneuvering of the guidewire through tortuous vessels by automatically rotating the guidewire whenever it is retracted by the operator. This movement changes the tip’s orientation in preparation for the next advancement. We evaluated this feature in a patient undergoing PCI to treat a severe (90% stenotic), long, diffuse, and calcified lesion of the proximal to mid LAD segments.

La présente étude tente de décrire les représentations de la participation sociale à la retraite ainsi que de prédire l’intention des personnes préretraitées et retraitées d’intégrer des actions de cette nature dans leur projet de retraite, et ce, en vue d’éventuellement mieux cibler l’intervention en orientation en fonction de cet enjeu. Selon la théorie du comportement planifié d’Ajzen, il est possible d’intervenir sur l’une ou l’autre des variables de l’intention comportementale pour modifier cette intention et, par le fait même, le comportement lui-même. Dans ce contexte, on pourrait envisager que les conseillères et conseillers d’orientation puissent intervenir pour stimuler l’intégration d’actions de participation sociale dans l’élaboration du projet de retraite des personnes en fin de carrière. Une telle démarche permettrait possiblement aux personnes retraitées d’être plus actives et impliquées personnellement et collectivement, ce qui s’harmonise au principe du vieillissement positif, actif et en santé mis de l’avant par diverses instances intéressées par ces questions.

Pour la Corée, trois âges constituent les repères importants dans la deuxième partie de la vie : 54, 68, 76. Un âge pour quitter la première carrière, un âge pour quitter définitivement le marché du travail et un âge pour quitter la vie. Ce parcours individuel est un phénomène révélateur de la vie dans le monde du travail. Dans une perspective comparée, notre étude s'est efforcée de chercher les spécificités coréennes, en matière de politiques sociale et d'emploi visant la seconde carrière. Il s'agissait d'étudier la manière dont ces configurations politiques, spécifiques à la Corée, formatent les trajectoires individuelles de fin de carrière. Un effet combiné des systèmes de retraite obligatoire et de retraite d'honneur pousse les salariés âgés en dehors de leur première carrière de plus en plus tôt sans pour autant que le système de protection sociale ne soit capable de leur venir en aide efficacement. In a comparative perspective, this research tried to study Korean specificities, concerning social and employment policies toward the second career. The purpose was the study of the manner in which the policy configurations, relative to Korea, build specific individual path in the end of career. A combined effect of the mandatory retirement system and retirement by honour system push older workers out of the first career earlier and earlier without the social protection being able to help them efficiently. Au cours de ces trente dernières années, le passage à la retraite, qui est appréhendé comme un moment charnière dans les parcours de vie, a connu des évolutions très importantes. S’il est acquis que la transition emploi-retraite implique un ajustement majeur pour les personnes, les façons de l’envisager, comme le vécu de cette expérience, varient fortement d’un individu à un autre (Henkens et al., 2018 ; Sargent et al., 2012 ; Van Solinge et al. 2021 ; M. Wang &amp; Wanberg, 2017).L’objectif général de cette thèse est de développer des connaissances sur deux notions qui ont, jusqu’à présent, été relativement peu abordées conjointement dans la recherche en psychologie : la transition emploi-retraite et le concept multidimensionnel de sens. La question du sens, au moment de l’entrée dans la retraite, revêt une importance particulière pour les individus, amenés à vivre plus longtemps comme pour nos sociétés, qui, dans un contexte de vieillissement de leur population, sont traversées par « l’obligation de longévité en santé » (Guillemard &amp; Mascova, 2017, p.23). Non seulement le sens est identifié comme une composante majeure de la santé et du bien-être des personnes (Lecomte, 2013 ; Bernaud, 2018) mais il est aussi un prédicteur du vieillissement réussi (Boyle et al., 2010 ; Pinquart, 2002 ; Reker &amp; Wong, 2012). L’ambition de ce programme de recherche a été de privilégier une approche holistique du sens, avec des recherches visant à appréhender ce construit dans sa globalité, à travers ses différentes ramifications et facettes, dans le contexte de cette situation de transition.Trois recherches ont été réalisées. Les travaux menés visaient plus précisément à comprendre la façon dont les personnes construisent du sens autour de cette expérience et à mieux cerner son rôle dans l’adaptation à la retraite.L’objectif de la première étude, exploratoire, était de mieux mieux cerner le vécu subjectif de cette expérience de transition et les mécanismes de construction de sens. Des entretiens approfondis ont été réalisés avec de nouveaux retraités (N=8). La méthode retenue est celle de l’analyse interprétative phénoménologique (Smith et al., 2021). Les résultats suggèrent des liens entre le sens et l’adaptation à la retraite et ont conduit à l’élaboration d’un modèle sur la construction de sens, dans ce contexte de transition.La deuxième étude avait pour but d’expérimenter un dispositif d’accompagnement, destiné à des salariés amenés à prendre prochainement leur retraite. Inscrit dans le champ de la psychologie existentielle, ce parcours d’ateliers, structuré dans la durée, avait le sens pour fil conducteur. L’étude appliquée consistait à concevoir ce programme et à le déployer auprès de participants volontaires, répartis en trois groupes (N=22). Nous nous sommes appuyés sur une stratégie de recherche mixte, combinant une méthodologie qualitative et quantitative. Les résultats suggèrent un accueil positif de ce dispositif. Les données qualitatives ont mis en évidence de premiers effets sur les représentations à l’égard de la retraite ainsi que sur les comportements. Toutefois, les résultats, issus de l’étude quantitative, suggèrent des effets modestes sur les représentations à l’égard de la retraite, le sens de la vie et la satisfaction de vie.Enfin, la troisième étude, menée auprès de nouveaux retraités (N=319), avait pour but d’examiner les liens entre le contexte de départ en retraite, les représentations à l’égard de la retraite, le sens de la vie, l’adaptation et la satisfaction de vie à la retraite. Une méthodologie quantitative a été privilégiée. Sur la base de connaissances empiriques issues d’autres recherches, quatre hypothèses ont été formulées et vérifiées. Trois ont été validées et une a été validée partiellement. While it is accepted that it involves a major adjustment for individuals, the ways in which retirement is envisaged and the experience of this transition vary greatly from one person to another (Henkens et al., 2018; Sargent et al., 2012; Van Solinge et al. 2021; M. Wang &amp; Wanberg, 2017).The general aim of this thesis is to develop knowledge about two framings that have, until now, received relatively little combined attention in psychological research: the transition from employment to retirement and the multidimensional concept of “meaning”. This issue is particularly relevant for individuals, whose life expectancy is increasing, and for our societies, which, as their populations age, are faced with the "commitment of healthy longevity" (Guillemard &amp; Mascova, 2017, p.23). Not only is meaning identified as a major component of people's health and well-being (Lecomte, 2013; Bernaud, 2018) but it is also a predictor of successful ageing (Boyle et al., 2010; Pinquart, 2002; Reker &amp; Wong, 2012).The ambition of this research program has been to favour a holistic approach to meaning, with research aimed at understanding this construct in its entirety, through its various ramifications and facets, in the context of this situation of transition.Three research projects were carried out. More specifically, the aim was to understand how people construct meaning around this experience and to better identify its role in the adjustment to retirement.The aim of the first exploratory study was to gain a better understanding of the subjective experience of this transition and the mechanisms by which meaning is constructed. In-depth interviews were conducted with new retirees (N=8). The method used was that of phenomenological interpretative analysis (Smith et al., 2021). The findings suggest links between meaning and adaptation to retirement and led to the development of a model of the construction of meaning in this context of transition.The aim of the second study was to test a retirement counseling program for employees who were due to retire soon. Based on the field of existential psychology, this support system, structured over time, had meaning as its main theme. The applied study consisted of designing this program and rolling it out to voluntary participants, divided into three groups (N=23). We used a mixed research strategy, combining qualitative and quantitative methods. The results suggest that the workshops received a high level of satisfaction from participants. The qualitative data revealed some first effects on people's perceptions of retirement and on their behavior. However, the results of the quantitative study suggested modest effects on perceptions of retirement, the meaning of life and life satisfaction.Finally, the third study, carried out among newly retired people (N=319), investigated the links between the context of retirement, representations of retirement, the meaning of life, adaptation, and satisfaction with life in retirement. A quantitative methodology was chosen. Based on empirical knowledge from other research, four hypotheses were formulated and tested. Three were validated and one was partially validated. The results show very significant links between meaning, adaptation to retirement and life satisfaction

Abstract Many editions of Lemaire’s poetry were published with his Illustrations de Gaule et singularités de Troie, a major historiographical work in three volumes, printed frequently between 1511 and 1549. It is important to grasp this work’s content and political orientation at the outset, since the Illustrations and the material published along- side it each influences the ways in which the other may be read. A learned text, the Illustrations incorporates epic and romance elements, and may be interpreted morally; however, its principal concern is to retrace, through Troy and ultimately to Noah, the genealogy of the inhabitants of ‘Gaul’, and to assert this region’s cultural pre-eminence in Europe. ‘Gaul’ is an ambivalent term: it often denotes an area covering both France and the Austro Burgundian lands (whose praise thus reflects Lemaire’s desire for European unity in the face of Turkish threats), but elsewhere corresponds to France.

Abstract Being asked to speak at this meeting in celebration of Jubilee Day makes me wonder what I can say-what tribute I can offer-what admonitions I can give that will not appear small beside the vision and courage and faith of those who laid the foundations of this institution-small beside the devotion and labors of those who have followed. This celebration of Jubilee Day is, I believe, one of the most important of all the functions connected with Fisk. It is good for us to take such a glance backward to take a sort of inventory of our heritage. It is not only good, it is necessary. It is in that way that we get out intellectual and spiritual orientation. Youth is often impatient of the past; but we need to feel the ground of the past under our feet in order to be able to move forward. We of this generation need at times to retrace the steps that have led to the place here we now stand, to come to a realization that the position of vantage we now hold was not gained as a mere matter of course in the succession of events, but that into its winning have gone toil and struggle and sacrifice. That word “sacrifice” is one of the noblest in the English language, but it is not in good repute at the present time. One almost apologizes for using it. The quality that it signifies is discounted, is, indeed, scoffed at. But the spirit of sacrifice is still at work in the world.

There is a trend towards miniaturization in surgical robotics with the objective of making surgeries less invasive [1]. There has also been increasing recent interest in hand-held robots because of their ability to maintain the current surgical workflow [2, 3]. We have previously presented a system that integrates small-diameter concentric tube robots [4, 5] into a hand-held robotic device [3], as shown in Figure 1. This robot was designed for transurethral laser surgery in the prostate. It provides the surgeon with two dexterous manipulators through a 5mm port in a traditional transurethral endoscope. This system enables the surgeon to retract tissue and aim a fiber optic laser simultaneously to resect prostate tissue. This robot provides the surgeon with a total of ten degrees of freedom (DOF) that must be simultaneously coordinated, including endoscope orientation (3 DOF), endoscope insertion (1 DOF), as well as the tip position of each concentric tube manipulator (3 DOF per manipulator). In [3], a simple user interface was employed that involved thumb joysticks (which also had pushbutton capability) and a unidirectional index finger trigger, as shown in Figure 2 (Left). The thumb joysticks were mapped to manipulator tip motion in the plane of the endoscope image, and the trigger was used for motion perpendicular to the plane. Whether the finger trigger extended or retracted the tip of the concentric tube manipulator was toggled via the pushbutton capability of the thumb joystick. While surgeons could learn this mapping with some effort, and were able to use it to accomplish a cadaver study, the experiments made clear that further work was needed in creating an intuitive user interface — particularly with respect to how motion perpendicular to the image plane is controlled. This paper describes a first step toward improving the user interface; we integrate a bidirectional dial input in place of the unidirectional index finger trigger, so that extension and retraction perpendicular to the image plane can be controlled without the need for a pushbutton toggle. In this paper we describe the design of this dial input and present the results of a user study comparing it to the interface in [3].

Abstract This paper reports on the design and manufacture of a compact telescopic morphing lattice (CTML) space boom. This boom stows within a 1U CubeSat volume and weighs only 0.475kg. Once deployed, the CTML has a total length of 2m, 20 times the stowed height. The device consists of three multi-stable cylindrical composite lattices connected in series. To improve packaging efficiency, these lattices nest inside one another in the stowed configuration. The morphing lattice is a structure that uses prestress and lamina orientation to seamlessly morph from a short stowed state to a long deployed state. By tailoring the manufacturing parameters, the lattices in the boom have been designed to maximize the deployment force and to be self-deploying. Therefore, the CTML only requires a small, lightweight mechanism to regulate the deployment speed. The deployment speed regulator can also potentially retract the boom back to the stowed state, facilitating reconfigurability.

In the field of space travel, space communications has always presented a slew of obstacles and hurdles that must be overcome in order to complete a successful mission. Space limits inside a satellite or spaceship, vast distances between satellites and ground stations, and a phenomenon known as "Faraday Rotation" in the ionosphere are only a few of the most typical issues. Satellite antennas must be small, compact, efficient, and circularly polarized as a result of the aforementioned issues. The helix antenna is an excellent answer for all of the requirements. In this work we develop a deployment and pointing mechanism of a helix antenna operated with software defined radio algorithms. The features of helix antennas are exceptional, and they are especially suitable for satellite communication. Three coaxial cylinders, two stepper motors, one pulley, and one thread make up a deployment-pointing mechanism. The mechanism deploys the antenna along its longitudinal axis and turns it horizontally towards the ground station. During the flight, the antenna is deployed and retracted. Under different positioning situations, the GPS, an altimeter, and a compass calculate the gondola's position in order to rotate the antenna towards the Ground Station and close the communication link. The antenna's rotation mechanism is triggered by the integrated attitude determination and control system algorithms in order to correct the pointing and orientation towards the Ground Station. The antenna uses software defined radio algorithms to achieve weight and volume reductions while maintaining high efficiency and reconfigurability. The experiment includes a high-definition camera that provides real-time information on the antenna's orientation and condition. SHADE's flight on the BEXUS 28/29 balloon resulted in effective deployment and transmission, as well as the ability to receive and decode transmitted packets. The rotating mechanism met the pointing requirements, and all of the sensor's data was correctly saved to our system. Throughout the trip, there were no signs of thermal risk

This paper looks at the advancement and implementation of daylighting calculations in architectural design during High Modernism. Particularly, it analyzes the engineering and architectural discourses on daylighting in the 1920s with respect to the arguments they delivered for healthy school environments. Using the case study of Hannes Meyer and Hans Wittwer’s famous 1926 project for the Petersschule in Basel, Switzerland, the paper intends to show the modernist stretch between scientific abstraction and design synthesis. In the 1920s, declaring good daylighting design as the first objective for a healthy school was not a new topic. For decades, school regulations had included recommendations for window designs, class room orientations, window-to-floor ratios, and sky-view angles, among others. With advancements in lighting science, for example the definition and measurement of illuminance, such empirical knowledge was increasingly disapproved in favor of more mathematical approaches to design. Meyer and Wittwer’s use of the“calculation procedure after Higbie and Levin” exemplifies how architects attempted to incorporate the state-of-the art knowledge of daylighting in design. Henry Harold Higbieand A. Levin published their calculation methods of daylight intensity in the Transactions of the Illuminating Engineering Society in May 1925 and March 1926, only shortly before the Petersschule competition. Analyzing the calculations, this paper tries to retrace how they influenced the design. Since Meyer and Wittwer also referred to several rules of thumb, one can speculate whether the architects’ empirical knowledge had initially helped them developing their design, while calculations served as later verification.

The current pandemic situation due to the appearance of the coronavirus-2 or SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) has increased the demand and familiarization of the population with infrared cameras and their thermal interpretation. Infrared radiation and the technology behind it have become a necessity not only developing new applications for the present but also for the future. In the post-pandemic world, commercial solutions to existing problems are being developed with this technology and with very efficient approaches, reducing costs and complementing many areas.Institute of Biomechanics of Valencia (IBV) is constantly innovating in the field of infrared thermal imaging and its applications in the well-being of people through research, experimentation and user validation. 3D models have been developed merging anthropometric data and thermal information based on scanners, 3D reconstruction and imagen processing. Some of the algorithms for monitoring and reconstruction system are based on a FLIR A35 thermal camera and an INTEL RealSense D455 depth sensor, a low-cost, high-performance sensor.Artificial intelligence techniques applied to images, mainly in visible or RGB datasets, have undergone significant development in recent years, however there is a gap in the application in thermal images. The IBV has compiled a powerful database for years from many users, insulation in clothes, extreme scenarios and different poses and face orientations. Many networks, models and libraries of computer vision, have been explored and some AI techniques (machine and deep learning) have been applied to extract information from those images, although open solutions and networks do not work accurately. The thermal database has been used to retrain these network models and the results have been considerably better.Near real-time, low-cost 3D thermal reconstruction, with embedded AI techniques, has been applied in facemasks evaluation, face recognition, feature and key points extraction, segmentation and development of automatic thermal measure algorithms. From feature extraction and landmark information, aspects such as thermotype, age and sex, have been also determined, or even the effects of the emotions, rotations or artifacts like glasses, facemasks or beards on the identification of the user. IBV has a huge background in this technology and develops new innovative solutions in order to tackle with new challenges, from determining the effect a facemask has, in thermal comfort or breathing rate to helping physician to diagnose certain diseases, such as circulatory, vascular problems and the effect of therapies or cosmetic products. In this way, information on the thermoregulatory behavior of the human body is provided, allowing to relate changes in thermal maps, to certain pathologies or to the effect of a treatment, skin affections, varicose veins or joint injuries.
