Abstract (sommario):
Family history has become a matter of concern for both academics and policy makers in recent years. During the same period oral history has emerged as a method used in many scholarly studies. For some it is a discipline in its own right, for some it is a technique to be used field by field, while for others it is viewed as a part of the popular culture. After the television adaptation of Alex Haley's somewhat controversial but highly influential book, Roots, use of genealogical materials at the Library of Congress increased markedly, giving a real boost to the popular pursuit of the past. This article will discuss the role of oral history in the documentation and interpretation of family history.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Background Acromegaly is a rare, lifelong disorder characterized by excess growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). Extended dosing intervals (EDIs) of pharmacological treatments may reduce patient burden and costs compared with standard dosing. This systematic literature review (SLR) investigated outcomes in patients with acromegaly receiving treatment at EDIs. Methods MEDLINE/Embase/the Cochrane Library (2001–June 2021) and key congresses (2018–2021) were searched for relevant literature; identified SLR bibliographies were also reviewed. A dual reviewer process was utilized. Included publications reported clinical effectiveness, safety, humanistic, and economic outcomes in longitudinal/cross-sectional studies in adult patients with acromegaly. Interventions included EDIs of lanreotide autogel (LAN), octreotide long-acting release (OCT), and pasireotide (all administered less often than every four weeks), oral octreotide (less than twice daily), pegvisomant (PEG; less than once daily), and cabergoline (less than twice weekly), with no comparator required. PROSPERO 2021: CRD42021278922. Results In total, 35 publications reported on 27 studies: 14 on PEG, 9 on LAN, and 4 on OCT as monotherapies or combination therapies at EDIs. No identified studies assessed EDIs of oral octreotide, pasireotide, or cabergoline. At Baseline, disease control and treatment history differed across studies. As compared with Baseline, treatment at EDIs resulted in reduced IGF-1 levels in 12/16 studies assessing LAN, OCT, or PEG (7–104 patients treated at EDIs) and GH levels in 5/6 studies (LAN/OCT; 15–32 patients). Normalized IGF-1 and/or GH, using study definitions, was achieved/maintained in 70%–100% of patients in 12/13 studies (LAN/OCT/PEG; 15–124 patients). Proportions of patients experiencing adverse events (n=4 studies reporting overall events; LAN/OCT/PEG; 8–96 patients) or discontinuing treatment (n=9; LAN/OCT/PEG; 7–124 patients) were similar across EDI and standard regimens. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) improvement from Baseline was reported in 9/10 studies after treatment at EDIs (LAN/OCT/PEG; 7–109 patients); HRQoL did not deteriorate versus standard regimens. Patients preferred EDIs (2/2 studies; LAN/OCT; 8–112 patients), and satisfaction with EDIs was high (2/2 studies; LAN/OCT; 13–109 patients). Substantially reduced costs were observed with EDIs versus standard regimens in 3/3 studies (9–23 patients) with LAN (120 mg every 6 versus 4 weeks), OCT (20–30 mg every 6–12 versus 4 weeks), and PEG (40–160 mg weekly versus 15–60 mg daily, both with LAN/OCT). Conclusion Clinical, safety, and HRQoL outcomes in patients with acromegaly were similar and costs lower with EDIs versus standard regimens. Satisfaction was high with EDIs. Limitations, including variation in study design and endpoints, and small, heterogenous patient populations, precluded conducting meta-analyses. Physicians should consider EDIs where appropriate. Further clinical research may substantiate reduced patient and healthcare system burden with EDIs versus standard regimens. Study funded by Ipsen. Abstract (sommario):
Public libraries can use digital oral history projects (1) to teach digital literacy skills to teens in accordance with national and state information literacy standards and (2) to develop local digital collections. The technical standards for such projects are modest, and the Library of Congress Veterans History Project provides an ideal template with which to begin. This article highlights the benefits of using the Veterans History Project for library programs and events and summarizes how the Veterans History Project can be collaboratively implemented across libraries. Suggestions for curriculum-based program development for young adult users of public libraries are also outlined.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine how the University of Wisconsin Law School Library sought to create easily searchable oral histories by partnering with the University of Kentucky and the University of Wisconsin Oral History Program. Through this partnership, a digital archive of fully searchable and indexed oral histories with links to relevant articles, Library of Congress keywords, summaries and maps is being created, giving users the ability to delve into the Law School’s history more deeply and with more historical perspective than ever before. Design/methodology/approach The implementation of the Oral History Metadata Synchronizer (OHMS) and the development of a daily workflow for adding University of Wisconsin Law School oral histories to the program is closely examined. The pros and cons of the program are discussed as well as the future of the Law School oral histories. Findings The OHMS program is a powerful tool that allows researchers to quickly and easily locate relevant portions of an oral history, saving the time required to review hours of an interview. OHMS also allows archivists and librarians to better organize and catalog each oral history by providing important metadata tools that provide context and background on each unique oral history. Originality/value The University of Wisconsin Law School is the first law school to implement the OHMS program in concert with an institutional repository. The program, which is free and open source, may be of great value to historians, archivists and non-profits who wish to make their content more visible and more searchable.

Abstract (sommario):
The article presents the monograph by Piotr Sitarski, Maria B. Garda, and Krzysztof Jajko Nowe media w PRL [New Media in the Polish People’s Republic]. The authors of the book presented how technological development was assimilated by society in the final stage of the existence of the Polish People’s Republic. Individual chapters describe the process of social assimilation of video, microcomputers, and satellite television in Poland. Referring to social history, the authors show the beginnings of the Polish digital society in the 1980s. They do this using modern methodologies from history of technology, social history, and oral history. The aim of the article is to show the processes discussed in the book against the background of social and political changes of the epoch. The documents cited (Uchwała generalna VI Kongresu Techników Polskich [Resolution of the VI Congress of Polish Technicians]) and events (Rok Nauki Polskiej [Year of Polish Science], II Kongres Nauki [II Congress of Science]) allow us to see the links between the modernization of the Polish and communist propaganda. The technology was aimed to certify the strength of the socialist system.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACTIn 1952, the African National Congress (ANC) initiated its Defiance Campaign, opposing apartheid laws through organized civil disobedience and African nationalism. On Sunday 9 November, the city of East London became a site of political mobilization when 1,500 Xhosa-speaking ANC sympathizers peacefully protested in Bantu Square, the hub of a township named Duncan Village. Police arrived and fired on the crowd, igniting ‘spontaneous riots’. An Afrikaner salesman and an Irish nun were killed in the ensuing unrest. Rumours circulated that a mob ate the white woman; troop reinforcements then fanned into the township to wage a retaliatory war, shooting and bayoneting their victims. Upwards of 200 Africans may have died but only nine fatalities were recorded. If the revised toll is credible, the bloodshed exceeds that of Sharpeville, the worst one-day massacre in apartheid South Africa. Oral sources explain why the slaughter in Duncan Village is not widely known. Township residents secretly carted the dead to rural graves, fearing to report their losses as people mourned the tragic slaying of the nun named Sister Aidan. Today, ANC rulers of East London seem content to silence the memory of a mass killing reputedly spawned by chaos and cannibalism. At the centre of this incident is Sr Aidan's mutilation for the purpose of makingmuthi, a shocking incident that dominates the story of violence on Black Sunday. Using archival documents and oral histories, and incorporating the methodologies of Jennifer Cole, Donald Donham and Veena Das, this article reconstructs a narrative of ‘critical events’ surrounding the nun'smuthimurder. The scrutinized witness testimonies relay how township residents framed their fierce encounters with a symbolic (white person) and ubiquitous (militarized police) enemy. Oral sources reject the notion that an aimless ‘riot’ occurred on 9 November. Instead, they reflect on cultural enactments of purposeful violence through scripted assaults andmuthiritual. Ultimately, they view the fatal attack on Sr Aidan as an evolving customary act of defensive retribution and symbolic warning, submerging truths in apartheid and hindering reconciliations in democracy.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose Oral histories (OHs), as primary sources of information, are used as evidences of the past and inculcate human memory. It is a real testimony of our history. However, OHs are now neglected and somehow unpopular. Strategies must be done to make sure that OH projects should continue to be used as proofs. The purpose of this paper is to go back in time and review the OH in Asia, in the Philippines, and the collection at De La Salle University. Design/methodology/approach This study explores the OH collection of the DLSU Archives. Data are extracted from the Sierra library system. Extracted subjects are arranged alphabetically. They are presented and summarized below. Historical data coming from the correspondences kept at the archives are also used to understand how the collection accumulated and how they are being organized, classified, and used by the patrons. Literature reviews are also consulted to learn more about the background of OH in the Philippines. Findings A total of 176 subjects are identified. These subjects are selected on the basis of the Library of Congress Classification Scheme which is re-categorized according to the Philippine Standard Industrial Classification to identify which type of industry does each OH belong to. The category on professional, scientific and technical activities had 30 LCC-related subjects or 16.95 percent of the total number of subjects, next is 15.25 percent or 27 LCC-related subjects which comes from the arts, entertainment and recreation, and top three is Public Administration and Defense; Compulsory Security with 10.23 percent. Research limitations/implications This paper shares the challenges and experiences of establishing and maintaining OHs. Practical implications The paper presents new ways or initiatives to capture OH other than the traditional and usual process. Social implications Oral interviews are given proper attention as part of the local history. Originality/value There is a scarcity of OH papers written by librarians; therefore, this paper presents the current status of OH in the country.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractOver the past 3,000 years, speakers of the Ateker family of languages in East Africa chose various strategies to respond to periods of climate change including the end of the African Humid Period and the Medieval Climate Anomaly. Some Ateker people made wholesale changes to food production, adopting transhumant pastoralism or shifting staple crops, while others migrated to wetter lands. All borrowed new economic and social idea from neighbors. These climate-induced changes in turn had profound social and political ramifications marked by an investment in resilient systems for decentralizing power, such as age-classes and neighborhood congresses. By integrating evidence from historical linguistics and oral traditions with paleoclimatological data, this paper explores how a group of stateless societies responded to climate change. It also considers whether these cases complicate concepts such as “collapse” and “resilience” that are derived from analyses of mostly state-centric climate histories.

Abstract (sommario):
Retrospective statistical epidemiological studies have suggested a possible association between the ingestion of oral contraceptives (OC) and thromboembolic disease. Past analyses of the coagulation system have yielded controversial informationWe studied a cross section of 131 women taking different kinds of OC and 36 controls for changes in hemostasis. No significant differences were noted in the levels of fibrino- peptide A (RIA), platelet factor 4, 8 thromboglobulin (RIA), fibrinogen (Multistat III (MCA), clottable), antithrombin III (MCA, S-2238), α2 antiplasmin (MCA, S-2251), pre-kallikrein (MCA, S-2302) and fibronectin (MCA, immune turbi-dometric). However, plasminogen (MCA, S-2251) and protein C antigen (Laurell) levels were significantly elevated (p < 0.001 and p < 0.01), respectively)Canonical correlation analysis was used to examine correlations between hemostasis parameters measured and clinical risk factors, such as age, parity, weight, smoking, family history for thromboembolic diseases and estrogen-progesterone dose. There was a significantly negative correlation between family history for thromboembolisms and antithrombin III levels (p < 0.01). A positive correlation existed between obesity and fibrinogen and fibronectin levels (p < 0.001 for both). The hemostasis data seem to suggest that OC use does not introduce an imbalance in the hemostasis system which fosters "hypercoagulability", and that, if at all, possibly other risk factors determine the incidence of thromboembolisms in OC users. It is suggested that caution be exercised in the use of OCs in patients with a history of thromboembolic diseases and with obesity

Abstract (sommario):
Context: Lacunar infarcts are small infarcts caused by occlusion of a single penetrating vessel, affecting mostly the basal ganglia, subcortical white matter and pons1. Around 20-30% of patients may progress symptoms over hours to days, and this presentation is associated with disability and poor prognosis2. Case report: A 70-year-old man with history of smoking, hypertension and a previous right occipital stroke reported right upper lip paresthesias since awakening. In 2-hours the right perioral region and his right hand were affected. After 3-hours he noted slurred speech. After 4-hours, imbalance was added to the previous symptoms. On admission, NIHSS was 4, mostly by previous left hemianopia, new right arm ataxia and cerebellar dysarthria. There were no weakness or sensory déficits. Brain MRI showed a subacute lacunar stroke in the left thalamus. Discussion: Thalamic lacunar strokes can present in a wide range of symptoms depending on the affected nuclei. The ventral posterior lateral nucleus (VPLn) and the ventral posterior medial nucleus (VPMn) carries sensory input from the contralateral body and face, respectively3. Cheiro-oral syndrome (COS) is considered a pure sensory thalamic lacunar syndrome with symptoms that affect the face, hand and/or foot, but may be accompanied by ipsilateral ataxia if the ventral lateral nucleus is also affected4 . Although classically associated with thalamic ischemic lesions, there are descriptions of hemorrhagic strokes5 and multiple different affected regions presenting as COS, including brainstem5 , internal capsule6 , operculum7 , cortex8 , corona radiata9 and thalamus10. Early recognition and diagnosis is essencial to institute adequate early treatment and secondary prophylaxis.

Abstract (sommario):
Introduction: Behçet’s disease is a multisystem disease consisting of oral lesions, genital ulcers and uveitis with unpredictable evolution. Vasculitic and parenchymal involvement of the central nervous system is uncommon. The aim is to describe a case of systemic rheumatologic disease with unusual central involvement in clinical practice. Case report: Woman, 57-year-old, with a previous history of rheumatoid arthritis for 23 years, presented oral and genital ulcers in addition to paresthesia in the right hemiface and subacute change in visual acuity and bilateral ocular pain in 2017. She was diagnosed with Behçet’s Disease with neurological involvement, being submitted to pulse therapy with Cyclophosphamide and maintenance treatment with Azathioprine. She recurred with the same neurological symptoms in 2020, readmitted in the context of severe thrombocytopenia, being diagnosed with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. Pulse therapy with Methylprednisolone was performed, with improvement of symptoms, but thrombocytopenia was maintained. He opted for the maintenance of Immunoglobulin then, with subsequent initiation of Rituximab. Bilateral ocular sequelae persisted with low acuity and hypoesthesia in the path of the trigeminal nerve on the right. Maintains good control of the disease using Rituximab at weaning and maintenance dose of Prednisone. Conclusion: The prognosis of Behçet’s disease is poor when the central nervous system is affected and studies about treatment still have limited evidence. Early identification of the disease is essential to enable rapid and adequate treatment.

Abstract (sommario):
Introduction: Copper deficiency is a rare disease that can present with a wide variety of symptoms, with myelopathy as the most common neurological presentation. The clinical features are characterized by sensory ataxia, spasticity and sensory-motor neuropathy. The risk factor that has the most impact is previous gastrointestinal surgery, but a large part of cases remain without a determined cause. The aim to present a case of combined subacute medullary degeneration secondary to copper deficiency with good response to treatment by reviewing the patient’s medical record. Case report: Male, 47-year-old, with no pathological history or previous surgeries. His symptoms started 12 days after coronavirus disease 2019 infection, as paresthesias in the lower limbs, urinary retention and progressive weakness. Imaging exams showed longitudinally extensive cervical and thoracic medullary injury compromising posterior and posterolateral regions, without contrast uptake. Complementary investigation demonstrated low serum copper. After oral and parenteral copper supplementation, the patient evolved with significant improvement. The etiological investigation of copper deficiency remains undetermined until the moment. Discussion: Myelopathy secondary to copper deficiency is characterized by being clinically and radiologically indistinguishable from subacute combined spinal cord degeneration due to vitamin B12 deficiency. Diagnosis and treatment are often delayed. Neurological manifestations are only partially reversible with copper supplementation, demonstrating poor prognosis. In the case described, the important recovery evidenced after the treatment stands out. It is suggested that combined oral and parenteral therapy with a multidisciplinary approach, as motor physiotherapy, are related to better neurological recovery.

Abstract (sommario):
It presents the reports of a qualified immigrant from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in Brazil, with the objectives of constructing the immigrant's life story, treating the immigration theme from a socio-environmental perspective and presenting the factors that enable the adaptation and integration of the same to the new community. The methodologies used were Oral History and Life History, which were able to present the interviewee's narrative about his life and the migratory process, relating them to the researcher's understanding of the story told in the light of related bibliography. Semi-structured interviews were recorded, which were later transcribed and transformed into documents for the construction of the immigrant's life history. The document produced through the interviews was treated using Content Analysis, which enabled the perception of categories, which were analyzed in the results. The discussion revolved around the family configuration in the DRC, the social structure and group formation in the country, the social interaction of a citizen of the world, the trajectories and networks of contacts of the immigrant, and the codes, postures and institutionsthat are important in the migratory process. The conclusions reached were that poverty and lack of opportunities are the main causes of skilled immigration; whereas family and cultural structures are important elements in the construction of the immigrant's identity; that academic and religious institutions and immigrant associations play a significant role in the cultural adaptation and integration of foreigners, due to theproduction of social capital, and that socio-environmental elements can produce topophilia in relation to the new country chosen to reside temporarily or permanently.

Abstract (sommario):
Context: Behçet’s Disease (BD) is a multisystem chronic disorder characterized by perivasculitis within several tissues, including the Central Nervous System – Neuro-Behçet’s Disease, which accounts for 3 – 9 % of the BD patients. Neuro- Behçet’s Syndrome may present as brainstem or pyramidal syndromes, myelopathies, meningoencephalitis, intracranial hypertension and movement or psychiatric disorders. The objective of the present work is to report a case of Neuro-Behçet’s Disease, a rare and disabling disorder. Case report: 24-year-old male presenting focal neurological deficits – hemiparesis on the right side and motor aphasia, associated with unstoppable hiccups and visual blurring. His previous pathological history featured several self-limiting episodes of the same neurological presentation, as well as acute exacerbations of oral and genital ulcers. Erythema Nodosum and Folliculitis were his main skin lesions. The ophthalmological evaluation showed bilateral cicatricial chorioretinitis. Laboratorial diagnostic procedures revealed left shift leukocytosis, high ESR, high protein level in the CSF and negative serology for B and C hepatitis, HTLV, HIV and toxoplasmosis. P-ANCA, C-ANCA, ANA and Rheumatoid factor were all found negative. Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the brain showed multiple oval- shaped T2- hyperintensity foci, with adjacent vasogenic edema, in the brainstem and basal ganglia areas – suggesting vasculitis. Treatment involved pulse therapy with Methylprednisolone, followed by Azathioprine and Prednisone. The patient has had full recovery and no other relapses. Conclusions: This case illustrates the importance of investigating Neuro-Behçet’s Disease in patients with neurological symptoms and oral/genital ulcers. The goal is to establish adequate and early treatment to improve the quality of life.

Abstract (sommario):
Consecutive patients with a history of thrombo-embolic disease (n = 241, 109 males, 132 females, mean age 46 y), referred to the Coagulation Laboratory during an 18 month period, were analysed for defects in their coagulation and fibrinolytic systems. The diagnosis of thrombosis had been verified with phlebography and that of pulmonary embolus with scintigraphy or angiography. Retinal venous thrombosis was found in 15 of the patients. In 15 cases the thrombotic episodes occurred postoperatively, in 15 during pregnancy, in 12 during the postpartum period and in 20 during use of oral contraceptives. In the remaining cases no clinical riskfactors were identified. The concentration of protein C zymogen was measured with an immunoradiometric assay. Functional protein C was determined with a clotting inhibition assay. Protein C deficiency was found in 8 cases. Two of these had a functional protein C deficiency with normal zymogen levels. The concentration of total, as well as free (not in complex with C4b-binding protein), protein S was determined with a radioimmunoassay. Two cases of protein S deficiency were detected. Three patients with antithrombin III deficiency and two with plasminogen deficiency were found. The fibrinolytic activity after venous occlusion was analysed in 216 patients. Decreased levels were found in 32 %. The concentration of tissue plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI) was measured in 110 patients and found to be increased in 65 % of the cases. In 99 patients both the fibrinolytic activity and the PAI concentration were measured. A combination of decreased fibrinolytic activity and increased levels of PAI was found in 44 cases. The concentration of tissue plasminogen activator antigen was decreased in 22 % of 105 cases analysed. Thus, in this material of patients with thrombo-embolic disease, abnormalities were found in 47 %. Defects in the fibrinolytic system were the most common findings. Protein C or protein S deficiency was diagnosed in less than 5 % of the cases.
